The Last Word – Brock Elbank The most famous person you’ve met? Going to gigs you see many famous folk, as a photographer, being an assistant I met many famous people and have been lucky to photograph a fair few.. Most famous that I’ve shot, probably Sir John Hurt?

Describe your perfect weekend Catching up with close friends, lunch, maybe a trip for food at a good pub, markets, a gallery, out with the kids.

Where are you to be found on Saturday? Depends on what time of the day it is really, mornings will be parks or markets, lunchtime could be at friends, or maybe a pub, evenings generally at home with the family, or entertaining?

What is your favourite place to eat? South London based photographer Brock Elbank specialises in commissioaned portraiture, with his last series #Project60 and Beard showing at Somerset House London, to assist in raising awareness for melanoma charity Beard Season.

How long have you lived in the area? 3 months and 1 day!!

What brought you here? Good local schools, good local parks and a vibrant selection of shops, restaurants etc.

What do you most value about the area?

We’re still trying out places in the area, honestly though we love to cook and entertain.

The best meal I’ve ever had.. This is a tough one.. As a child, my Uncle Ivor used to buy the most incredible joints of fillet steak, seriously I’ve never tasted better. Until my wife Sarah took me out on my 38th birthday in Leichhardt (Inner West Sydney) to an unassuming restaurant that had a couple of hats. It was superb, from start to finish, even though I was on crutches at the time.. Sadly I can’t remember the name of it and it’s since moved?

Cafe, pub or bar?

Since we’ve moved in, we sense there is a great a community spirit, we live in a friendly street and the school, pupils and parents are fantastic.

Pub, I love The Crown in Angel Islington, just off Cloudsley Sq, had some good times in there. It’s a proper English Victorian pub, cosy, good food and warm atmosphere.

One thing you couldn’t do without?

Where’s your favourite place to walk?

Probably the East London Line station, having that so near to where we lived was a draw card for sure. Also having the shops so nearby, after 2 years in rural Warwickshire is a big help.

Do you know your neighbours? By name yes, I think there is a different dynamic to how London works to a small village. People are civil, they say “Good morning” and will take deliveries if you’re not in. But when you’ve two young daughters, you tend to meet their parents more openly sometimes..

When I lived in Sydney, I use to run the ‘Bayrun' with my trusty Staffy Monty, then walking over the fields in rural South Warwickshire was always a good time to recharge and witch off. Now we’ve moved here I’m still looking and learning about the area, though around One Tree hill and the parks isn’t a bad start.

What’s On - December Thursday 3 December: Dulwich Charity Lunch We are delighted to announce the 14th Dulwich Luncheon Club Charity lunch will take place on Thursday 3rd December from 12.30pm. Once again the lunch will raise much needed funds for local charity Link Age Southwark (formerly Dulwich Helpline & Southwark Church Care.The venue is the same as last year, The Palmerston, which proved very popular with everyone last year. to the end of the shopping parade on the other side. He will also recommend that the boundary be extended onto Perry Vale to encompass the small parade of shops. A report will be issued in September and public consultation will be organised for the autumn. The Mayor of Lewisham will then consider the proposals by March 2009. We have two more venues for The 23 Club. On Wednesday 23rd July, we’re meeting at 8pm at Le Querce, 68 Brockley Rise, 020 8690 3761. If you’d like to spend an evening with other people who are passionate about SE23, then just ring the restaurant to book (mentioning it's for The 23 Club). They’ll seat us all on one or two big tables, depending on numbers. Everyone pays for their own food/wine. In August, the 23rd falls on a Saturday so we thought this would be a good opportunity for a family-oriented, Forest Hill Society Summer Barbecue at lunchtime. Space Saving Solutions for Christmas Entertaining

ny host no matter her or his affection for Christmas will have to make a festive nod in the direction of a seasonal spruce up, guests expect it. The problem I find is filling your home with items that only get used once a year, plus I find the whole process of packing up Christmas rather gloomy. Regular readers of this column will know from previous years my various tricks to minimise this ordeal. For example, I have a very realistic fold up tree pre-lit tree tied with lots of contrasting spotty, striped and checked bows that just has to be pulled from its box and plumped up.

The initial time invested in this was extraordinary but it has been paying dividends ever since. Another great idea is to collect items for your tree throughout the year, these do not have to be Christmas specific for example the bird salt and pepper pots pictured here, at a post-Christmas party invite guests to choose a gift from the tree to take home with them. If a tree is too much hassle there is no better way to welcome guests than with a door wreath and if you get one from a local florist it can go into the compost, rather than the back of the loft, on Twelfth Night. Make sure you check for wires etc before composting. Similarly, fir fronds look beautiful tied on the hand rails of banisters and laid along the centre of a table. Add a splash of colour with orange pomanders, oranges studded with dried cloves, or scattered mandarins. Use foil A4 card as party placemats, tree ornaments with luggage tags as place card markers and our old favourite the paper chain as disposable napkin rings. Buy some artists pallets from the Art Stationers in Dulwich Village and you will have the perfect superstylish serving board for cheese and crackers that stores flat throughout the year – I slide mine in undetectably between the Christmas cookery books.

ecember brings the shortest day of the year, it is of course the time of year when friends and family gather together to enjoy good food and escape the winter chill. It is one of my favourite times of year, as in the brief lull between the Summer Events Season and the Christmas Party Rush I am able to grab some time in my own kitchen, doing what I enjoy most of all; getting creative with ingredients, and prepping for Christmas as much as possible…. those ‘essentials’ like satsumas in cider brandy, and Christmas Cake & Christmas Pudding of course!! Although the days are short nature is still providing us with some fantastic seasonal fruit and vegetables; sprouts, turnips, swede, cauliflower and parsnips are all in season and available alongside items from store such as potatoes, carrots, red cabbage, beetroot, apples and pears.

For a real treat this month try Wild Goose, Jerusalem Artichokes and Red Cabbage (wonderful braised and served with chestnuts) all of which will be at their best now. Serves 4 • 4 wild goose breasts • salt to taste • 1 dash dry vermouth (optional) • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest • 1 orange, juiced • 1 teaspoon lemon juice • 1 teaspoon brown sugar • 1 clove garlic, minced • 1 tablespoon soy sauce • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard • 1/4 teaspoon caraway seeds

Method 1) Preheat oven to 350°F / 175°C. 2) Rinse the breasts in cold water, and place in baking dish. 3) Splash with vermouth, then season with salt & set aside. 4) In a medium bowl, combine orange zest, orange juice, lemon juice, brown sugar, garlic and soy sauce. Season with mustard and caraway. Pour glaze over breasts in baking dish. 6) Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until no longer pink and juices run clear. 6) Baste at least twice during baking as wild geese tend to have very little fat on them and the basting ensures they remain moist and tender. 7) Serve with oven roasted root vegetables. Save Lewisham Hospital Campaign S SLHC

ome se23 readers may remember that in early 2013 many Lewisham residents, including myself, marched to save Lewisham Hospital following proposed changes to its services by the Trust’s Special Administrator (TSA). This was for me a déjà vu of the 80s and 90s where, as a NHS biomedical scientist, I seemed to be on a march to save our NHS every month. I had thought those days were behind us. The Lewisham Hospital proposals were based on financial difficulties to the adjoining South London Healthcare Trust to which Lewisham Hospital does not belong.

For those who are interested the following event, Save Lewisham Hospital Conference-NHS in Crisis has been arranged for the 5th December at Goldsmiths University. It will be opened by Lewisham East MP, and Shadow Secretary of State for Health Heidi Alexander, who says that she will “take the spirit I learned from the campaigners in Lewisham to the despatch box in the House of Commons”. Heidi was instrumental in the Save Lewisham Hospital campaign. To register for the conference go to www.savelewishamhospital. com and it is free to attend.

Also during 2013, both Lewisham Council and SLHC brought legal challenges to the decision by the Secretary of State for Health to support the TSA’s report which would downgrade the hospital’s A+E and maternity services. On July 31st 2013, the High Court ruled the decision illegal and supported Lewisham Council in its judicial review. Since then, Lewisham and Greenwich Hospitals have combined to form a new, and successful, trust providing services across the two boroughs.

Amongst the speakers will be John Lister from London Health Emergency, whose seminal book Cutting the Lifeline-The Fight for the NHS, published in 1988, is still very relevant today. My own copy has unfortunately disappeared from my book shelf where it had sat since 1989.

Having worked for the NHS all my working life, it is clear to me that our NHS is again in crisis. This can be seen in what are described by care experts as unrealistic budget cuts and targets and unfair changes to staff contracts as highlighted recently by those of junior doctors. We are now in a situation where this failure to close Lewisham Hospital’s services is referred to as “unfinished business” by London Health Chiefs. To counter this, Lewisham Clinical Commissioning Group has written to Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust to provide a very important commitment to the continuation of the A+E department. The Group confirms that they expect to need all of South East London’s existing A+E departments, including those at Lewisham Hospital which it expects to remain as an emergency care facility operating 24hours a day. 20 | SE23 - December 2015

On a more seasonal note, with Christmas only days away, there are fairs and markets to visit, with Horniman Museum and Gardens own being held over the weekend of 5th and 6th December between 10.30am and 5pm. Shelly says “never again” to unwanted gift-giving at Christmas! "Dear Akwasi, Can you help me budget for Christmas? I am sick of spending half the following year catching up with my overspending. Christmas last year was spent at mine. I ended up overspending by loads! But did I enjoy it? Not really, if I’m honest. So what’s the point of overspending and ending up having a lousy time anyway? My best friend, who was having marital problems, had asked me at the last minute whether she could spend Christmas day with us, which was quite unusual because Christmas is traditionally a small, family-only affair. But what could I say? “No?” So of course she came over; trouble is that she has three brats. So they had to be included in the unwanted-gift-giving. And to ensure that the brats felt loved, included and welcome, I made a special effort and bought the two boys what I thought was the latest funky electronic gadget only to hear one whisper to his brother that it was the old model and that his mate had the new model which was much, much wickeder. I was crushed. “Knowing how fussy seven year old princesses can be, I spared no expense and bought their sister a gorgeous designer lilac roll-neck jumper. When she tried it on she couldn’t remove it fast enough! Apparently, it was “itchy”. So it was chucked in a corner and she continued to stuff her fat little face with cake. I was bitter. “Did they reciprocate? Like hell they did. A twentyfive quid hamper “from their family to ours” was it. So they accepted their individual expensive goods with, “Oh, thanks”, false smiles and no genuine eye contact. They came, ate, drank, took their loot and left. Never again! “It’s just as bad being on the receiving end of unwanted-gift-giving. My Dad bought me a pack of three dreadful polka-dot silk-ish scarves that a clown would refuse to wear. that they had been panic-bought. The following January, he bumped into me on my way to work and noticed that I was wearing a proper scarf and had the nerve to ask me why I wasn’t wearing one of his! Not one to hurt the feelings of family, I managed to convince him that I was saving them for a special occasion. My brother is a disgrace at Christmas. If he could simply opt out of it all he would. He always claims he’s flat broke and we’re all stupid enough to believe him. Last Christmas, he bought everyone second hand books, even though he has a high powered, highly paid, city job. Mine had handwritten notes all over it and the previous owner had used a highlighter pen on almost every page! My Mum is great at Christmas. Her gifts are always inexpensive but just so thoughtful. She puts money aside for Christmas so that by the beginning of November, she’s got her Christmas budget sorted out. All her gifts are bought, wrapped and labelled nice and early, so she has ample time to enjoy any festivities. In writing this to you, I think I have answered my own questions. I just need to be more like my Mum and be well organised and prepared for what without doubt is the most expensive part of the year. I mean, when you go away on holiday, you make sure you have enough money, right? Surely, it’s the same with Christmas! That’s it. Next year, I’ll get it right.

Plants that keep on giving Digitalis purpurea “Excelsior Group” - Our beloved foxgloves. They’re technically biennals but produce plenty of sideshoots and self seed generously so go on for years. Hemerocallis Daylili - Daylillies can tolerate flooding, drought and salt and are often used for erosion control on steep hillsides. A plant that is best divided every three to five years, the daylily is perfect to share with friends.

In this festive season, I thought what better gift for you amateur gardeners than a list of tried and tested, reliable plants that work hard for your money and will flower for a very long time? With the help of my friend and peer Jane Booth**, I have compiled a list of plants that keep on giving. Some of them are still in full bloom in my garden as I’m writing this article! Erigeron kanvianskanus - This small unassuming plant doesn’t ask for much and will flower for months and months even if you don’t deadhead. It brings a bit of happiness everywhere it goes. Salvia “Amistad” - Salvia is a very interesting group of plants, but this one is particularly rewarding. It’s very easy to grow and flowers for 6 months or more The books say it needs deadheading but I leave mine to get on with it and it doesn’t seem to mind. Nicotiana 'Whisper Mixed' - is a must-have tobacco plant. It looks fantastic for at least 4 months, and has great disease resistance. Thalictrum 'Elin' - The new leaves are blue-grey gorgeously flushed with purple. By May the stems have soared to a height of 2m. In June lavender buds open to creamy flowers and the stems stand all winter. Cosmo binnapitus - Though it’s an annual, it often reseeds on its own. It flowers all summer until the first frost. It’s easy to grow from seed. So for a few pennies, you’ll have a long and gorgeous show in a single season. 32 | SE23 - December 2015

Solanum jasminoides - This is a vigorous climber that you cannot kill and flowers throughout summer and autumn and it’s not unusual that I see it flowering during the winter as well. Rosa “Madge” - flowers 11 months of the year, what about that, hey?! You might have to go to Great Dixter though to purchase it as it’s not often seen in garden centres. Geranium “Rozanne” - as well as, to be fair, most cranebill Geraniums keep on flowering over a very long time. They need deadheading though. Cyclamen hederifolium - With their pretty, marbled, heart-shaped leaves and upright, fragrant pink or white flowers, these easy to grow cyclamen have a long season of interest before disappearing below ground over the summer. The flowers of this autumn-flowering cyclamen often appear well before the leaves, which form a pretty carpet after the flowers have finished. Happy in sun and shade, they are perfect to plant around the base of deciduous trees. ** I recommend her “practical gardening advice” service. Keeping Pets safe at Christmas

hristmas is a period of high excitement for all the family, but it is also the time we are most likely to take our eye of the ball where pets are concerned. So often, as festive preparations take over, and you are busy overseeing children, family and an endless succession of meals, it is easy to overlook the many potential dangers Christmas poses for our furry friends. Be prepared and take a moment to read these top tips; avoid a costly visit to the emergency vet and keep your pets safe this Christmas.

Food Hazards Don’t leave food lying around, put it out of reach, or dogs and cats will certainly help themselves. Protecting a tasty morsel may trigger possessive aggression in dogs. Must have Christmas treats can be deadly to pets. Chocolate is a killer where dogs are concerned. The darker the chocolate the more toxic it is. Even a tiny amount can induce vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity and changes to heart rhythm, as well as trembling, seizures and finally, coma. Cooked bones can cause a ruptured gut, choking and even broken teeth. Too much fat can cause pancreatitis. Put those mixed nuts and dried fruits well out of reach. All are highly toxic and can cause seizures, trembling or other neurological signs, like lethargy and loss of muscle control. Christmas cake and Christmas pudding are chock full of dried fruit and nuts. Gravies full of onion and garlic are toxic to dogs. Watch children and dogs. Kiddies love to share delicious treats with their four-legged chums, oblivious to the dangers.

Dangerous Plants We all know Yew is deadly, but who knew a tiny bit of lily leaf could kill your cat? Pretty poinsettias can inflame the mouth and cause severe vomiting.Pine needles are toxic. Dogs and cats enticed by dangly decorations and glittery lights, can accidently ingest bits of tree. 36 | SE23 - December 2015

Holly and Mistletoe can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, hallucinations and even death, if ingested. Few adult dogs are likely to eat something so prickly but curious pups and kittens are a different matter.

Ornaments and wrapping Cats love tinsel. It is the ultimate in desirable prey; it moves, it rustles and it glitters. Some cats try to ingest what they catch and kill, and tinsel can cause a fatal obstruction in the gut. Swinging glass ornaments are no less interesting and can cause choking and obstruction in both cats and dogs. Remember puppies are especially inclined to explore new and interesting objects with their teeth. Try to put objects like this high up the tree, out of reach. Pups and cats are excited by the rustle of wrapping paper and bits of ribbons. Again, ingestion can cause choking or impaction, twisting around the guts, requiring urgent surgery.

Hot wax can badly damage little paws. Twinkly lights, especially ones that blink on and off, will attract the interest of your pet and investigations may lead to discovery of the flex. Many young animals try to chew light flex and power cords and the ensuing electric shock, when the animal chomps down, may lead to damage to mouth, tongue, and even death. The bottom line is, monitor and supervise pets throughout the holiday period. If you can’t, put them somewhere safe, away from temptations, until you can. What brought you here? Good local schools, good local parks and a vibrant selection of shops, restaurants etc.

What do you most value about the area?

We’re still trying out places in the area, honestly though we love to cook and entertain.

Cafe, pub or bar?

Since we’ve moved in, we sense there is a great a community spirit, we live in a friendly street and the school, pupils and parents are fantastic.

Pub, I love The Crown in Angel Islington, just off Cloudsley Sq, had some good times in there. It’s a proper English Victorian pub, cosy, good food and warm atmosphere.

One thing you couldn’t do without?

Where’s your favourite place to walk?

Probably the East London Line station, having that so near to where we lived was a draw card for sure. Also having the shops so nearby, after 2 years in rural Warwickshire is a big help.
