Welcome I am well and truly feeling the Christmas spirit putting together this issue. I have drawn the line on listening to Christmas tunes just yet! But with all the fantastic Christmas theme events we have on locally this month, it is difficult not to feel Christmassy. We have two more pages of Christmas Fairs and Markets page 36 & 37. Check out our full events listing starting on page 8. Remember there are more events, stories and news at www.arounddulwich. co.uk. All our usual columns are here, so why not take a moment and have a look through the contents page. The Dulwich Charity Lunch returns next month, helping raise much needed funds for our local charity Link Age Southwark. If you fancy joining many local business men and women at The Palmerston, check out all the details on page 31. The Last Word goes to local resident and artist, Fraser Crawford. Find out more on page 40. So all that is left for me to say is Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

I’m dreaming of a White Christmas…
T
his has always been my favourite time of year. When family and friends come together and forget their troubles or take a break from their busy lives for the holidays; It’s a season that can bring so much love, laughter and happiness into our lives. The celebratory atmosphere, the twinkling fairy lights and glistening decorations on trees, the scent of mulled wine in the air, the singing of festive songs and the joy that emanates from people celebrating the festivities together is for me a magical time of year. Decorating my home for Christmas has always excited me the most! I have been known to start planning my theme as early on as September! My family think I am absolutely bonkers of course! This year I’m planning on creating my own dream of a white Christmas, by making that magical atmosphere indoors rather than rely on the weather outdoors. To create this effect does not require going on a big spending spree, the purchase of a few cans of white spray paint can revitalise old baubles and tired looking decorations, with the addition of some snowflaked shapes cut out of white paper, candles and
12 | SE23 - December 2017
the addition of some simple greenery or berries from outside will help you create this sophisticated look. The secret to pulling off this colour scheme is to keep it simple, let white dominate the overall look by using different shades and textures, using warm white fairy lights in different shapes and sizes, wrapping the presents up in rustic paper and tying them with hessian ribbons to place under the tree. Try to restrict any additional colour to simple highlight features. With strategically placed or hung natural greenery, pine cones or twigs, will create the effect of a magical white Christmas indoors. Take time to group items together and match them in with similar tones and textures, remember that it is the one time of year where a little bit of visual drama is appropriate. This natural, magical feel of Christmas can be achieved without breaking the bank, leaving you more to spend on food and drink (of course!). Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Food & Drink with Suzanne James
Turkey & Stilton Burgers with Mushroom Sauce You can never go wrong with a turkey recipe in December! Here is a great way to use up your Christmas leftovers. Makes 3 Burgers.
Ingredients For the Burgers
• 100g Blue Cheese • 35ml Chopped Flat-Leaf Parsley • 10 ml Fresh Thyme • 100g Fresh Breadcrumbs • 500g Cooked Turkey Meat (leftovers) • 3 Eggs • 8ml English Mustard • 1 Garlic Clove • Salt & Ground Black Pepper • Flour for dusting • 1 egg • Breadcrumbs
For the Sauce • 300g Button Mushrooms • 25g Butter • 200ml Vermouth • 400ml Crème Fraiche • Vegetable Oil for Frying
Method 1) Cut the Blue Stilton Cheese into small cubes and mix the chopped herbs and the breadcrumbs. 2) Cut the leftover turkey into pieces and place in a food processor. Add the eggs, mustard and garlic and process until the mixture looks like a fine paste. Season as desired. 3) Divide the turkey mixture into 3 parts and pat each round into a flat circle. Put a cube of cheese in the centre and gently bring the turkey mixture around to cover completely. 4) Cover the patty in flour, eggs and breadcrumbs. 5) Make the sauce, slice the mushrooms and cook with butter for 5 minutes. Add the vermouth, and cook on a slow heat until it has reduced by half. Finally, add crème fraiche and continue to simmer gently for a further 10 minutes. Season to taste. 14 | SE23 - December 2017
6) To cook the patties, shallow-fry in vegetable oil on both sides, drain well on absorbent kitchen paper. Serve the patties with the mushroom sauce. Enjoy! Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer
What does it feel like to be fit?
F
irstly, I’m referring to fitness in a physical sense, so your strength and cardiovascular performance. To achieve a good level of physical fitness, you must also pay attention to your sleep, mental health, energy, body composition and digestion – what we call the Six Signals®. So, what does it feel like to be fit?
Have More Energy Being physically fit provides you with more energy to get things done. Rather than drain your energy, a workout at the start of the day can set you up for a more energetic and productive day, as well as giving you all the benefits of increased blood flow, potential EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption – i.e. increased calorie burn post-workout), increased heart rate and the flow of ‘feel good’ neurotransmitters such as endorphins, serotonin and dopamine.
Have More Resilience Our lifestyles demand that we are physically fit for the rigours of modern life. The demands made on us in terms of our availability, combined with the pressures to be ‘always on’ mean that it can be easy to become stressed and burned out. Whilst being fit doesn’t mean this won’t happen (or that the demands on your lifestyle should be met), it does mean that you are much better equipped for the tough times and have the resilience to ride the storms.
Have More Stamina Being fit provides you with the stamina needed for much of life. Being fit means you don’t need to worry about the physical demands of an exercise or activity because you can be confident you have the fitness to endure it.
Your World Opens You can say yes to things rather than defaulting to no because you don’t think you’d be fit enough. You don’t want to be the one who sits it out because of a perceived or real lack of fitness. Once you become fit, your world opens up and you are more willing to try new things. It’s an incredible feeling! 20 | SE23 - December 2017

Operate In Your Discomfort Zone The ability to become comfortable or have the tools to operate in your discomfort zone is huge. We believe it’s important to regularly challenge yourself in some way to get comfortable with this. Sport and exercise is a great way to do this, hence we regularly take part in challenging endurance events to keep ourselves sharp.
Enjoy A Longer Healthspan Being fit means you are giving yourself a good chance of having a long healthspan. We talk about healthspan not lifespan because health is what really matters, not the total number of years you’ve lived. Maintaining your fitness will promote a healthy cardiovascular system; strong bones, tendons and ligaments; a healthy brain with lots of blood flow; balanced blood sugars and hormonal profile; a healthy digestive system and good mental health.
Suck The Marrow Out Of Life This is one of my personal values; it’s a quote from Henry David Thoreau’s ‘Walden’. Being fit means you have the energy, the confidence and the strength to let life take you where it will and get as much enjoyment from it as you can. You have options. Your perceptions of what you can and can’t do won’t stop you from living life to the full. The process of taking control of your life and reclaiming your fitness is so empowering that mentally you’ll be much stronger and you’ll have the body to match your aspirations. Long Term Care News
Longevity & Funding Long Term Care We are all aware of the continuing increase in life expectancy, but whilst the potential for living longer may be a blessing it can also become a challenge.
P
ension reforms have given people more choice with what they can do with their pension funds. This doesn’t make it easier, however, to judge what funds are needed to ensure both a comfortable life and that the money doesn’t run out. Indeed, choices not available to people before, such as accessing funds earlier or investing instead of taking a secure income, could increase the chances of running out of money in retirement.
Estimating Future Spending According to the Office for National Statistics, spending patterns change as we go through retirement and into later life. For those aged 50 to 64, we average £29,744 per annum; between ages 65 and 74, the average falls to £23,816; and it drops to £15,496 at age 75 and over (source: ons.gov.uk, Dec 2015) But what if residential care is required at age 85? It is impossible to judge what this will cost. If an individual is receiving high quality care, with nutritious food and plenty of cognitive activity, they could live many years.
Getting It Wrong When funding significant care costs, if life expectancy assumptions by the individual in care, their families or their advisers are underestimated, it can be disastrous. They will not be able to leave the legacy they wanted to. But also care homes are under huge financial pressure and many cannot sustain residents at local authority rates; so it could mean being moved out of the home – potentially a very unpleasant situation for all concerned. 22 | SE23 - December 2017
The Six Ways Of Paying For Care For most people, paying for care requires creating income from their capital and assets. In general, there are six ways of achieving this. It is important to assess how each fits your own circumstances. It is likely that the best solution will be a combination of these options:
1) Deferred Payment Agreement If you own your own property, and it is not disregarded*, your local authority may meet the cost of your care; however, you will have to repay this ‘loan’ at some point. A deferred payment agreement is available to all individuals who cannot afford to pay their care fees without selling their property. The local authority will be allowed to charge nominal interest. When the property is sold, either on death or before, the local authority will recoup its money. *Your main residence is disregarded in certain circumstances.
2) Rent The Property Out Another option to consider if you have a property is to rent it out. The rental income could be used towards the cost of care.
3) Equity Release If you are receiving care at home, it may be possible to release capital or income by using the value of your property. You will, however, have to pay interest on any capital/income that you release, and if you need to move into a care home permanently, the loan will have to be repaid. You must ask for a personalised illustration to understand the features and risks of this course of action.

4) Cash
Summary
You may simply put your capital into a savings account and make withdrawals to cover the care fees. Returns on this option are generally low, and you are likely to experience capital depreciation.
As the population ages and medical advances help us to live longer, more and more people need either residential or nursing care in their later years. Placing an elderly relative in care is not something most of us have experienced. There will be plenty of things to think about and this may feel a little overwhelming. Arranging for the best care in the right setting will be a priority. If there is a need to pay for care, you may have had little or no information, guidance or advice to help you make the right decisions. It is imperative that you seek professional assistance to help you make an informed decision.
5) Invest You could invest for income. Choosing the right combination of investments is crucial. Whilst good investment performance may help you create a longer time span than deposits, if the investment is made into equities there is the risk that the value and any income provided may fall as well as rise. This would result in you getting back less than the amount invested which in turn means that this type of investment will not provide the security that is associated with capital held in a deposit account with a bank or building society.
6) Buy An Income With A Care Plan You could use some of your capital to buy yourself a guaranteed level of income payable monthly and guaranteed for life. The amount of capital needed varies according to the age and health of the individual.

Tony Hunter, a famous singer/dancer movie star, is feeling washed up and old hat (old top hat, tie and tails to be exact). The reporters are out for Ava Gardner, not him. But his old friends Lily and Les Martin have an idea for a funny little Broadway show and he agrees to do it. However, things begin to get out of hand, when bigshot "artistic" director/producer/star Jeffrey Cordova joins the production, proclaims it's a modernistic Faust and insists on hiring a prima ballerina, Gabrielle Gerard, to star opposite Tony, and it's hate at first sight. And her jealous choreographer isn't helping to ease the tension. But romance, a "let's put on a show" epiphany, and a triumphant opening are waiting in the wings. After all, this is a musical comedy! Six Things We Could Learn From The Wealthy
T
ake a second and think of someone you really admire. Chances are that nine out of ten of us would have chosen someone who’s successful and wealthy. The wealthy are different. Not only do they have cash the likes of which most could never realistically dream of, they also have a different mentality. While you might think, “well yes, being worth a few million would make me see the world through different eyes”, it goes deeper than that. Whether you admire the wealthy or not, copying some of their habits could help you become more successful - and wealthier too. Here are just five things they do that could help you. 1) They put their money to work: Whilst we all understand the concept of working for money, not many of us understand the concept where money works for us. The wealthy get their money to work for them by investing. Whether in their education, in property or investing in the markets; the wealthy are good at putting their money to work. 2) They only ever borrow to invest: Whilst one should avoid borrowing to invest in anything high risk, good borrowing would include property purchase or, investing in your education or own business. Borrowing money for luxuries such as holidays, cars or fancy clothes is a to be avoided especially via high interest credit cards and personal loans. 3) They are tax-clever: There are many tax breaks and tax efficient investments available to UK tax payers but many people don’t know about them and how they work. This is where engaging the services of a good financial adviser and or accountant would make sense. As a first step, use your pension and ISA allowances. Once those are exhausted boxing clever with how you manage your taxes could make an enormous difference to your wealth. This applies even after you are dead! 4) They are in control of their funds: The smart, or long-term wealthy, don’t throw away cash like the proverbial footballer’s wife on yet another shopping spree. They watch their money carefully and treat every penny as though it were

their last. And that’s how they stay wealthy. There are plenty of super-wealthy (inherited and selfmade) who drive old bangers, live in modest homes and send their kids to state schools. Throwing your money away is a fool’s game and only leads to one thing – you get poorer whilst others getting richer. 5) They mix in the right circles: Wealthy and successful people (who are, after all, often one and the same) mix in circles that benefit them. Opportunities come their way, either because of who they are, where they are, or who they know. Either way, it’s easier for them to come across the sort of opportunities that most of us would die for. 6) They are shrewd, not tight: Tight and shrewd are not the same thing. Shrewd people have respect for money, whilst tight people are just mean. Take advice and generally act with caution, whether you’re spending, or investing. Whether you’re spending your hard-earned cash, or saving or investing it, respect it and use it wisely. Money doesn’t grow on trees. It’s hard to come by and even harder to hold on to – unless you follow the wealthy and handle what you’ve got with supreme care. Akwasi Duodu | akwasi@sterlingandlaw.com www. sterlingandlaw.com
to the end of the shopping parade on the other side. He will also recommend that the boundary be extended onto Perry Vale to encompass the small parade of shops. A report will be issued in September and public consultation will be organised for the autumn. The Mayor of Lewisham will then consider the proposals by March 2009.

Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw
And so to bed....
I
t’s chilly out there, the lawn’s looking muddy and the borders tatty, but a bit of tidying now will make the garden look neat over the Christmas period and get you one step ahead for spring…
Cut Back… …but don’t be too tidy. Some perennials such as sedum have attractive seed heads that look great covered in frost or dew. Ornamental grasses also add winter structure as do dried out hydrangea heads – both can be pruned in spring. Cut back perennials that are looking tatty and brown such as peonies and Verbena bonariensis to around to 5cm from ground level. (Leave more tender plants such as penstemon until April or May after the frosts.) Wisteria can be pruned now and give roses a light trim, removing long or damaged shoots. Now they’re dormant, apples, pears, currants and autumn fruiting raspberries can also be pruned from now on. Likewise, trim off any dead, diseased or rubbing branches from shrubs and trees. Acers and birch are particularly suited to pruning now, before the sap starts to flow. But there’s no need to go overboard as many plants such as buddleja and late flowering clematis can wait until early February.
Reorganise & Plant… This is a good time to move plants that are in the wrong place – too big, not thriving or overcrowded, adding organic matter as you go. Since they’re dormant, as long as the ground’s not frozen, they will adjust to being moved or divided. Try to work on boards, so as not to compact the soil. You can also plant trees, shrubs and bare root fruit trees, soft fruit bushes and roses now.
Clear Up Throw away any annuals such as sweet peas and cosmos. You can always replace with cyclamen or viola for winter colour Keep raking leaves from the lawn and remove them from borders – especially rose leaves with black spot (burn or destroy anything 28 | SE23 - December 2017

diseased rather than composting it). If you have masses of leaves, bag them up – making a few holes in the bag - and leave them at the end of the garden for fantastic leaf mould. Keep on top of weeds and clear up messy areas with piles of pots or clutter that create a winter home for snails and slugs. Clean and store stakes and garden furniture.
Mulch Finish off the borders with a mulch of bulky organic matter or bark, especially around anything recently pruned, newly planted or tender such as Verbena bonariensis or penstemon. This will improve soil texture, suppress weeds and add a bit of frost protection. (Ideally this is done before the soil gets too cold.)
Lawn Care If the weather’s mild you may still need to cut the grass in dry weather – on a high setting. But keep off the lawn if it’s wet or frosty.
Finally… ...pick some holly, cotoneaster, ivy and other evergreens with berries for the festive period! Happy Christmas! Janine Winlaw - Writer & Gardener Follow me on instagram @janinewinlaw

Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair
Keeping Dogs Happy & Healthy At Christmas
C
urrent reports say that we are in for a cold Christmas and we might even get snow. After indulging at the Christmas table one of the great seasonal pleasures is to take a long family walk and having a dog only adds to the experience. If the weather is really cold or wet, a few precautions will ensure you have a healthy and happy Christmas all round.
Slippery Snow & Ice Many of us seem to go stir crazy in the snow and decide to give our dog the equivalent of a year’s worth of aerobic exercise. We break out the ball chucker and run the dog until he can run no more. If your hound is already as fit as the proverbial butcher’s dog you might just get away with this sudden burst of extreme exercise. However, for those that gently walk their dog a few times a week this way disaster lies. The biggest risk is often to the cruciate ligament and this major injury will not only blow your bank balance but put your dog on crate rest for many weeks and even months. Mud, wet, snow and ice all create ideal conditions for dogs that run at full pelt to slip and slide as they try to make contact with the ball. It is this twisting action that places such force on ligaments that damage can occur. By all means walk in the snow and wet but instead of sending your dog rocketing out after multiple throws of a ball, try throwing the ball out and telling him to ‘leave’. This way the ball lands and is stationary before you release your dog to go after it. The dog goes into seeking rather than chase mode; he’s more likely to amble over to where he saw the ball land and use his nose to locate it. Not only is this game very satisfying and tiring, it teaches your dog self- control. If you do not have a strong ‘leave’ cue have your dog on a line or lead before releasing him to go after the ball. Another option is to teach your dog ‘find’. What could be more fun than finding items buried in snow or leaves. Your dog will, if anything, be more tired after a good game of ‘find’ outdoors than wildly chasing a ball. 30 | SE23 - December 2017
Salted Areas, Ice & Paws When the thermometer dips below freezing the salt and gravel trucks are out in force. Do look out for the tell-tale signs of salted paths and roads. Salt that gets into tiny cuts on pads or between pads will sting and hurt, it can also trigger a rash. If your dog is small you can carry him past the salted areas. Alternatively, consider protective bootees. Ensure you wash your dog’s paws when you return home. Owners of dogs with hairy feet should watch out for hard ice balls that can develop between the digits, under the pads. This can be incredibly painful and it may appear as though your dog has gone temporarily lame. Having a small flask of warm water and a cloth can mean you are able to remove the balls in situ.
Muddy Conditions Many of us will happily walk our dogs in the rain and mud and so we should. A pavement walk home can get rid of most of the mud but it is a good idea to wash paws on your return. Dogs with muddy paws can end up with ear infections because they have scratched and mud enters the ear canal.
Antifreeze Beware, some people think antifreeze is a great way to clear ice from the path. It can also drip off car windscreens. Antifreeze tastes like honey to dogs and cats and it will kill them. Do not let your pets lick road or path surfaces or puddles.
Coats Unless your dog is a young, hairy beast think about a coat for very cold, windy or rainy weather. Dogs with single coats or elderly and sick dogs will thank you.
Merry Christmas! Leonie St Clair - www.londondogstraining

The Last Word – Fraser Crawford Getting up a little late, painting all day then going for perhaps one (or two) drinks in the evening. I am a great fan of going to art galleries up in town and more locally, like Something Gallery in Honor Oak which is worth a visit.
Your favourite place for a night out? There are lots of lovely bars locally – the champagne bar in Brockley is quite good fun. My clubbing days are behind me though.
Where are you to be found on Saturday? At the easel or in the pub.
What is your favourite place to eat?
My name is Fraser Crawford. I work down the road in East Dulwich as a family lawyer but my real passion is for painting!
How long have you lived in the area? I have lived in South London for seven years, previously at Peckham Rye. I have been in SE23 for just over a year.
What brought you here? It was convenient for work in SE22 at Glazer Delmar Solicitors on North Cross Road.
What has changed most during that time? South East London has changed so much in this time – there are Hispters everywhere, which must mean it’s got trendy.
What do you most value about the area? I really like the sense of community. I lived in North London for years and never knew my neighbours. I can’t walk down the street now without bumping into someone I know now.
Rocca in Dulwich village is great for an Italian. Babur in Honor Oak is the best Indian I have had and would recommend it to anyone.
The best meal I’ve ever had.. It was in New York and I ordered a steak. Not sure what part of the animal it was supposed to be, but it looked to be about half a cow. I didn’t manage the lot but I made a good dent in it. It was a bit of a celebrity hot spot. I was sitting under pictures of Ronald Regan and Tina Turner – two separate pictures I hasten to add.
Cafe, pub or bar? I tend to end up in Donde in Honor Oak, but I gather it is being refurbished at the moment. I am often to be spotted out and about in SE23. The Sylvan Post on Dartmouth Road does a very good Espresso Martini. You can’t drink lager all the time.
If money was no object.. I would live in a massive house with lots of animals and I would paint all day.
The book I’m reading at the moment..
Do you know your neighbours?
I like my history books – The origins of the Second World War by AJP Taylor.
Yes – as I say SE23 is a very friendly place and I am lucky to have good neighbours on either side.
My perfect holiday..
The most famous person you’ve met? I have met quite a few – the nicest one was Kathy Burke. We spent a long journey together on the train to Cornwall once and she was slightly hungover. She was visiting Dawn French and texted her to get out of her car at the station. Dawn French blew kisses at me from the platform whilst Kathy Burke smoked an overdue fag.
Describe your perfect weekend 40 | SE23 - December 2017
I used to live in Barcelona and have lots of friends there so I do like to visit as often as I can to keep my Spanish up. I am a big fan of anywhere in Spain that is a bit off the beaten track.
My secret ambition.. Winning the lottery is a bit obvious isn’t it? To be honest I would quite like fame as well as fortune, but I will keep playing the lottery in the meantime. @FCrawfordArt
