And So To Bed... Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw It’s chilly out there, the lawn’s looking muddy and the borders tatty, but a bit of tidying now will make the garden look neat over the Christmas period and get you one step ahead for spring…

Cut Back… …but don’t be too tidy. Some perennials such as sedum have attractive seed heads that look great covered in frost or dew. Ornamental grasses also add winter structure as do dried out hydrangea heads – both can be pruned in spring. Cut back perennials that are looking tatty and brown such as peonies and Verbena bonariensis to around to 5cm from ground level. (Leave more tender plants such as penstemon until April or May after the frosts.) Wisteria can be pruned now and give roses a light trim, removing long or damaged shoots. Now they’re dormant, apples, pears, currants and autumn fruiting raspberries can also be pruned from now on. Likewise, trim off any dead, diseased or rubbing branches from shrubs and trees. Acers and birch are particularly suited to pruning now, before the sap starts to flow. But there’s no need to go overboard as many plants such as buddleja and late flowering clematis can wait until early February.

Reorganise And Plant… This is a good time to move plants that are in the wrong place – too big, not thriving or overcrowded, adding organic matter as you go. Since they’re dormant, as long as the ground’s not frozen, they will adjust to being moved or divided. Try to work on boards, so as not to compact the soil. You can also plant trees, shrubs and bare root fruit trees, soft fruit bushes and roses now.

Clear Up Throw away any annuals such as sweet peas and cosmos. You can always replace with cyclamen or viola for winter colour Keep raking leaves from the lawn and remove them from borders -– especially rose leaves with black spot (burn or destroy anything diseased rather than composting it). If you have masses of leaves, bag them up – making a few holes in the bag - and leave them at the end of 12 | SE23 - December 2020

the garden for fantastic leaf mould. Keep on top of weeds and clear up messy areas with piles of pots or clutter that create a winter home for snails and slugs. Clean and store stakes and garden furniture.

Mulch Finish off the borders with a mulch of bulky organic matter or bark, especially around anything recently pruned, newly planted or tender such as Verbena bonariensis or penstemon. This will improve soil texture, suppress weeds and add a bit of frost protection. (Ideally this is done before the soil gets too cold.)

Lawn Care If the weather’s mild you may still need to cut the grass in dry weather – on a high setting. But keep off the lawn if it’s wet or frosty.

Finally… Pick some holly, cotoneaster, ivy and other evergreens with berries for the festive period! Happy Christmas!

Five Signs Of Burnout

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com

How To Spot When You May Be On The Burnout Spectrum This month I’d like to talk to you about the five signs of burnout, that show you may be moving on that huge burnout spectrum. Perhaps a few red flags going up in terms of your health and wellbeing, all the way through to burnout. Now it’s a long way to go from these early warning signs, but it would be great, if we could identify these things to stop things in their tracks in the early part of that burnout spectrum. I was influenced by Gail North and Herbert Freudenberger‘s burnout spectrums. They created the burnout spectrum with 12 points.

1) Apathy And Anhedonia Apathy means you can’t be bothered and everything feels like an effort. Anhedonia is a loss of pleasure in things you would ordinarily find pleasurable. You used to love a game of tennis or a dog walk. Now you just don’t feel it. You don’t get the joy from it. Combined with apathy, you can’t be bothered to go out and do those things and try to get that joy back. This is a sign on the burnout spectrum.

2) Feeling Deeply Fatigued You feel deeply fatigued, real tiredness, tiredness in the bones. Tiredness perhaps that you just don’t seem to be able to overcome or even get enough sleep to overcome.

3) Finding It Hard To Shut Off You may feel you just can’t shut off. You might find that you’re dreaming about work or dreaming about some of the problems and anxieties in your life. That your mind is racing and you find it very, very difficult to close that off and to move on. You may find it challenging to get any headspace.

4) Mood Or Personality Changes Maybe somebody else, a spouse or a colleague has said, you know, you’re behaving a little differently. You seem unsettled. You appear distracted. You’re simply just not yourself. These changes in mood and behavioural problems can be a sign of being 16 | SE23 - December 2020

on the burnout spectrum. You may notice this in yourself as well. You may feel that you’re not your usual effervescent self.

5) The Body Keeps The Score This last point is arguably the most important, which is that the body keeps the score. Even if you’re able to push through, ploughing on regardless, which is so common in business and British culture. Know that you can ignore the signs the body sends you, but it does keep the score. You might notice hair loss. You might notice weight gain or weight loss. Experience other kinds of physical symptoms such as headaches, unexplained, aches and pains. I’ve even known more dramatic symptoms than that. For example, the scarring of a forehead. You can try and push these signs of burnout stuff aside and ignore the red flags to your health and wellbeing, but it will come back eventually to rear its head. So please don’t ignore it.

Link Age Southwark

Double your donation to Link Age Southwark this Christmas to help combat loneliness in our comm

L

ink Age Southwark is a vibrant local charity providing friendly volunteer support to isolated people aged over 60. They work to reduce loneliness by helping older people and those living with dementia to maintain active lives, by providing befriending, group activities, transport, and light DIY and gardening services across the community. The charity will soon be launching their Big Give Christmas Challenge with the opportunity to raise £24,000 in just 1 week! These funds will be used to reduce isolation and loneliness experienced by older people living in Southwark, by enabling Link Age Southwark to diversify the way they offer their groups, to include face-to-face, online platforms and conference calling. Ultimately, this will help them to ensure nobody is excluded in the community. Link Age Southwark’s social and activity groups provide a much-needed break in the week for some, a chance to socialise and move about. For others, the groups may be the only time they speak to another person for several days or weeks at a time. Last year alone, the charity ran 26 groups who met 758 times, with a record 6,160 attendees in total.

our work. It feels hard to reach out again after so much has been given by the local community, but any contribution that you can make to this appeal will be very gratefully received.” You can support Link Age Southwark by donating to their Big Give Christmas Challenge beginning on #GivingTuesday, between midday on 1st December to midday on 8th December. During the campaign, donations to the charity will be generously matched by individual sponsors and their Big Give Champion, The Julia and Hans Rausing Trust, meaning the value of your donation will be doubled.

How can you get involved? Visit Link Age Southwark’s campaign page: https://donate.thebiggive.org.uk/campaign/LAS and make a donation from 12pm on 1st December (#GivingTuesday). The campaign will close at 12pm on Tuesday 8th December. If you are unable to donate at this time but still want to support Link Age Southwark’s Christmas Challenge, you can do so by telling your friends, family and colleagues or sharing the campaign on social media. The feedback the charity receives from their evaluations confirms that the groups have a clear social function and increase attendee’s energy levels. 96% of group members reported they were either happy or very happy with the groups, with one member saying, “Group session gives me a big uplift. We sing and talk. It’s nice to socialise.” Another member’s husband commented on the impact the musical group has on his wife, who lives with dementia; “She used to love music […] and the group helps her to connect some way through music.” So far, the charity have moved 6 of their groups online and had 1 group meeting in a COVIDsafe way, up until the latest national restrictions. As government guidelines continue to change, it is essential for Link Age Southwark to adapt and expand the way they offer their groups to the older people they work with. Sophie Wellings, Director at Link Age Southwark says: “2020 has been a challenging and complex year for us all. We have been overwhelmed by the support and goodwill that we have received from the community. The money that we raise from the Big Give contributes significantly each year in supporting SE23 - December 2020 | 19

Christmas Memo Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

Twelve Days Of Christmas Memo For Lockdown Puppy Owners Lockdown has seen an unprecedented increase in puppy ownership. Many of you are first time dog owners. With the Christmas season now only weeks away, I felt it would be useful for newbie owners to have a quickie Christmas pitfalls puppy guide. I have included links to further information. 1) Many human foods are toxic and even deadly for dogs. Chocolate, dried fruits, grapes, nuts, onions are just a few of the dangerous ingredients that can land your pup at the vet, or worse. 2) Christmas plants and decorations can also be very dangerous if ingested. Cabling for fairy lights and batteries are just one example of things your puppy may try to chew. See: www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-advice/christmasdangers-dogs 3) Don’t forget external hazards like anti-freeze, sometimes present in floor cleaners. It tastes like nectar to your pup but is deadly in even tiny quantities. 4) Think about using baby gates, a pen or crate so your puppy or dog can be given a safe area when you cannot supervise. 5) Remember pups need 18-20 hours’ sleep a day. Ensure your pup has a quiet area and encourage chew and settle periods. No-one wants an adrenalin charged puppy. 6) At Christmas and other holidays, it is easy to get caught up in festivities and forget the young animal’s needs. Ensure your pup has an array of suitable edible chews, of different textures. These will keep her occupied when you are busy with presents or cooking. Remember, teething can be a protracted affair and the back teeth are still bedding in at twelve months. 7) Take time to teach your pup problem solving games as well as letting him run around. Brain work will tire and relax your pup beautifully. 20 | SE23 - December 2020

8) Teach your pup to find things, put part of her daily food ration into toys so she can chew and snuffle for the goodies. 9) If your pup is short-haired, do get a coat for rainy or cold days. 10) Be careful not to over exercise pups and young dogs in wet or slippery conditions. A bad slip can cause lasting damage to tender puppy joints. 11) Fireworks season continues and before you know it, we’ll have New Year celebrations too. Read up about how to prepare. www.dogstrust.org.uk/help-advice/dog-care/ fireworks 12) Don’t forget to leave your pup on her own for short periods. In lockdown and on holidays pups soon get used to you being around all the time and will suffer when that stops. Keep up separation training. www.abtc.org.uk/owners/covid-19/ Have a wonderful Christmas with your puppy and let’s look forward to a better year in 2021!

Ten things to consider when buying new window & door replacements

T

here are many reasons you might want to replace windows and doors in your home from reducing drafts, improving heat insulation to home improvement and renovations. With thoughtful consideration and the help of an expert, such enhancements can increase the value of your property and ensure a long-lasting investment. For this reason, we introduce you to Ayrton Bespoke, experts in period replacement timber doors and windows. Ayrton specialise in accurately replicated sash or casement windows and individually made front and back doors that will enhance the character of your period home. They have an impressive reputation with more 5* Google Reviews than any other timber window and door company in London. The windows are built by the finest craftsmanship, whilst using only high quality slowgrown redwood from Latvian forests for durability and strength. This enables Ayrton to guarantee the finest quality there is to offer at affordable prices. To ensure you are 100% happy with your decision to fit these bespoke pieces, Ayrton will even send a surveyor round to run a satisfactory site survey to confirm the pricing.

Before you invest in new window or door replacements, have a look at Ayrton’s 10 important decisions for window and door replacements: 1) Buy from a local window specialist (not a builder – they don’t make windows and doors) 2) See the products up close before you buy 3) Property is valuable – use timber – and accurately replicate the original features 4) Don’t buy on price – buy cheaply and you will pay twice 5) Look for comprehensive guarantees 6) See examples of local work – even talk to an existing customer 7) Good windows and doors take time to make – allow 12 weeks 8) Expect answers on the detail – where is the wood from? What type of paint? Security? 9) Make sure the company also fits the windows and doors and does NOT sub-contract 10) Check out their reviews Ayrton Bespoke is London’s leading period timber window and door replacement company. Visit their showrooms in Wandsworth, Crouch End or Dulwich www.ayrtonbespoke.com. SE Magazine readers will receive an exclusive 15% offer off all windows and doors. SE23 - December 2020 | 21

How Good Is Your Workplace Pension? If you’re employed in the UK (as opposed to selfemployed) you should be auto-enrolled into a workplace pension unless you’ve chosen to opt out. But although auto-enrolment is a good thing, it’s not an excuse to sit back and take no further interest in your pension. Many people I meet have little or no idea about their workplace pension. Many see their workplace pension as “wooden dollars” and therefore do not pay as much attention to their investment as they would a personal pension or ISA. Workplace pensions are real money and should be treated as you would any investment. Ignoring your pension could result in, poor performance, too much or too little risk or a mismatch with your retirement plans. Worst of all, some people forget about their workplace pension altogether when they change jobs, with their hard-earned money falling into the £19 billion of unclaimed pension pots.

What type do you have? As a minimum, you should take note of what kind of pension you have. There are only two types of workplace pension, so it should be easy; DB – defined benefit and DC, defined contribution. A DB pension is also known as a final salary and pays you a guaranteed income for life when you retire; often inflation proofed. Because of these guarantees, defined benefit pensions are very desirable. This doesn’t mean no attention should be paid to it.

Is your pension fund in default? One potential downside of defined benefit schemes is that they are costly for employers to run, and may run up deficits. Many DB pension funds are in default. If yours is, your pension benefits could be at risk, so it’s worth knowing. A defined contribution pension on the other hand is a pot of savings built up over time from contributions you and your employer make. Somewhat easier to understand, these savings are invested in a fund of assets such as equities and bonds whose objective is to grow over time. It is this aspect of pension saving that most people ignore entirely. But there is good reason to pay attention. 22 | SE23 - December 2020

Are you in the default pension fund? Your DC workplace pension scheme’s default fund will typically be a one size fits all portfolio of investments that trying to suit the needs of all members. In short, it will probably be a fairly blunt instrument – satisfactory for everyone perhaps, but ideal for few. Yet nearly nine out of 10 people in workplace DC pensions remain in the default fund, a statistic which makes worrying reading. Recent studies have revealed huge variations between workplace pension default funds, with a whole range of different approaches to structure, risk level and goals, which in turn ‘presents a risk for pension savers.

Five Ways To Make Your Workplace Pension More Relevant To You 1) Ask your workplace pension provider for details of their default fund Contact an independent financial adviser and ask them to explain the information you’ve been given, in terms of how the funds are invested and what this means for your money. 2) Talk with your adviser about your own financial circumstances, goals and risk appetite, and see how well these align with the strategy of your workplace pension’s fund. 3) Some employers will agree to make contributions to a pension you have set up yourself, such as a personal pension. With your adviser you could then choose the most suitable investment strategy for your needs. 4) When you have decided on a pension fund, continue to carry out regular checks to ensure that it is delivering what you want. 5) The one size fits all approach is best avoided. It is very unlikely that a default fund will turn out to be better for you than one tailored to meet your needs, and this can make a significant difference to your income in retirement. It is time to sit up and take notice.

Environmental News Zaria Greenhill writes about Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in Lewisham

W

ould you ever sit and drink coffee in the street? Or chat to neighbours? Or ride your bike? No? If not, there’s a good chance that it’s because of the traffic, which makes it noisy, smelly and dangerous. Have you heard of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs)? Lewisham Council declared a Climate Emergency in 2019 and aims to be zero carbon by 2030; traffic contributes about a quarter of our borough’s carbon emissions. Roughly half of all Lewisham’s adults are car-free, but traffic jams have become more frequent, and the air we breathe is often unsafe. Unlimited car use can no longer be taken for granted as the roads fill up and journey times increase, as does frustration, air pollution and road rage. The Locked-down empty South Circular was literally a breath of fresh air. It helped us to imagine what a car-free space could be like, and many of us loved it. An LTN has been in development in east Lewisham since lockdown, which has been difficult but nonetheless a new vision has been born for Lewisham. An LTN is when areas of housing are divided into ‘cells’ with no through traffic, or ‘rat-running’. Residents are expected to use major roads for longer journeys (no cut throughs), but to walk or cycle for local short journeys: school runs, leisure, shopping, and access to public transport. TFL states that 20% of all journeys are less than 2km, or 1.2 miles. A healthy adult takes about 20 minutes to walk that distance, far less on a bike. Those who need to use cars are able to, and usually find it easier with less traffic. This model has been used globally but in London, with irregular streets and historically haphazard development, it’s not easy. Luckily, our borough is rich in small businesses with the flexibility to serve 15-minute communities. Imagine accessing almost all daily needs within 15 minutes’ walk? Actually, in SE23, can you do that now? How about trying it out? Walking is more pleasant through peaceful tree-lined streets. While cycling can be scary, lots of cycle lanes and ‘quietways’ are away from main traffic routes, through parks and green space and residential roads. Use OpenStreetMap, Cyclestreets or Bikemap to find safe routes. The main down-side of LTNs is that traffic is dispersed into neighbouring

24 | SE23 - December 2020

areas and not actually reduced, bringing more traffic to some streets in the short term. Generally, LTNs have a trial period when support is offered to residents to use active travel, and over time traffic diminishes. Railton Road LTN between Brixton and Herne Hill reported a doubling in cycling after just two months, and a huge reduction in traffic. One of the biggest benefits is the enrichment of communities. People on foot are more likely to chat to neighbours and we all feel safer and more comfortable on our streets: they can become more pleasant places to relax and socialise, to share things, and even grow food. This is possible and indeed desirable for the future of London. As the weather warms and economies get more challenging, our communities and our relationships will be crucial. Let’s build them while we can. Zaria Greenhill is co-chair of Climate Action Lewisham, which has just released a short film about cycling in an LTN, see: https://climateactionlewisham.org/film/

esidents struggling to heat their homes this winter as a result of the Covid crisis will be able to benefit from expert advice provided by a group of local organisations and charities. The new initiative will give free support to anyone who is in debt to their gas and electricity supplier. Project leader, Dr Giovanna Speciale, says the scheme will help people badly hit by the ongoing Covid restrictions to keep their homes warm and regain control of their finances. ‘Since lock-down so many people are facing a financial abyss. This project will enable us to reach out and help those who are afraid to turn on their

heating this winter and feel they have nowhere to turn,’ Dr Speciale added. Thanks to funding provided by the British Gas Energy Trust, essential support will be available to residents in Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Greenwich and Croydon. Citizens Advice Lewisham will focus on developing long-term solutions to energy debt problems as well as helping with budgeting and access to benefits. South East London Community Energy (Selce) and Groundwork London will provide advice on how to avoid falling into fuel debt by reducing energy costs and making homes more energy efficient. Energy saving devices can also be provided free of charge. The project will be running from now until Summer 2021. s we clatter towards Christmas, it is true to say that the youthful and somewhat injury depleted Dulwich Hamlet men’s side is yet to burn as brightly as many fans had hoped. A few draws, a few more defeats, and a limp departure from the FA Cup in the last qualifying round have left SE22’s finest camped in the foothills of the league. If ever a club is driven by the roar and jangle of its home crowd it is the sons of Edgar Kail. And boy has Champion Hill ever missed its roar. Yet hope burns eternal in The Rabble’s breast. Surely, the fans cry, the time must come when the team pull up their pink and blue socks, find their football mojo, and start ascending the treacherous slopes of National League South like a latter day Norgay. Well Amen to that and watch this space sports fans. Better news elsewhere from the Dulwich

Hamlet universe however where the ever spicy Dulwich Hamlet Women’s team have put in some stellar performances recently. Just prior to lockdown, DHWFC took on high-flying Dartford, coming from 0-2 behind to win a ripsnorter 3-2. All this in front of a rocking record crowd of 586. The Hamlet women now go top of their league. Unfortunately during lockdown all football below the National league has been put on ice. So while the “elite” Dulwich Hamlet men’s team continue to play behind closed doors, the women’s team must wait until 2 December to find out whether and when they can resume their allconquering season. In the meantime however, the club is very much alive and well. For one, all Dulwich Hamlet home games continue to be streamed absolutely free on the club’s Tube channel (www.youtube. com/c/DulwichHamletTV). So you can don your

Any orders placed after this date will certainly be processed, but might not arrive in time for the big day. A merry Christmas to all from Champion Hill. And keep your eyes on the club website (www. dulwichhamletfc.co.uk) for news and updates on fixtures.

Make the invisible visible. Please spread the word and support those with hidden disabilities. Living with a hidden disability can make daily life more demanding for many people. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard enables people to discreetly indicate to others that they, or someone they are with, have a hidden disability and may need additional support, help or time. Their hidden disability may also be the reason why they are exempt from wearing a face covering.

If you notice someone wearing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard please be patient and give them a little more time. SE23 - December 2020 | 31

The Last Word – Rhidian Turner What one thing would you change? Now that I have a child, I’ve become very aware of how fast people drive down our road.

Do you know your neighbours? We’re very lucky that we get on well with our neighbours. Our street is filled with children of a similar age to our son, which is great! It’s the first time I’ve lived somewhere with this sense of community.

Where are you to be found on a Saturday? Prepping drinks and garnishes for the weekend deliveries.

Coffee or tea? Where? Coffee, I love the hot bean soup! My go-to spot is Two Spoons in Honor Oak Park. Luca is a gent, the coffee is beautiful and the cakes are on point.

Cafe, pub or bar? I’ve got to say bar, really, haven’t I!?! I love the hospitality industry in all its guises, but the creativity, knowledge and passion on display in a good cocktail bar hold a special place in my heart.

Your favourite place to go for a drink?

Rhidian Turner is a veteran West End mixologist, drinks educator and founder of Doorstep Drinks, a local cocktail delivery service.

How long have you lived in the area? Two years now. It’s been the scene for some of the best moments of my life. I proposed to my wife in Honor Oak Park, got married in Peckham, we had our reception in East Dulwich and our son was born at King’s!

What brought you here? My wife, Alex, and I were looking for a change of pace after living in Central London. We got a viewing that I wasn’t able to attend, but Alex convinced me that the house and the area were perfect. She was right!

The one thing you couldn’t do without? On a personal level my wife, my son and our dog! On a more prosaic note, my phone! So much of what I do is about communication; with customers, suppliers and with the hospitality world in general. 32 | SE23 - December 2020

In these uncertain times, my living room! Since staying in has become the new going out, perfecting a new recipe for the menu makes for a great evening. I’m also in charge of the playlist!

Where’s your favourite place to walk? There’s no shortage of lovely walks in this part of South East London. I love an early morning walk over One Tree Hill with the dog and Sundays in Horniman Gardens are a great excuse for an al fresco pastry.

When I want to relax... I cook! I find cooking at home quite a zen activity. I enjoy the lack of pressure compared to the bar and restaurant world.

What is your favourite shop? I’m a sucker for cookware stores. I sometimes have to be physically restrained from coming home with yet another kitchen gadget!

If money was no object.. I’d open my own little bar, just close enough to home to make it an easy commute, but just far enough away to make a day off seem like freedom!
