Heavenly Helebores For Early Colour Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw

T

he pure white helebores I have in my front garden, shooting up in January from the bare soil are such a joy, making me feel spring is on the way. Helebores come in a gorgeous range of subtle hues from whites and pale apple greens to dusky pinks and deep inky purples, lighting up your garden from now to spring. There are also a few peachy coloured helebores and fancier varieties with double petals or stunning markings.

The best way of choosing a flower you love is to buy it now while it’s in bloom. For most impact, group at least three together in the front garden, by a path, or where you can see them from a window on a cold day. Apart from the more sun tolerant varieties, helebores like dappled shade, so planting them in drifts under a deciduous tree or large shrub for summer shade is ideal.

They look great inter-mingled with snowdrops and cyclamen or other shade lovers such as ferns or Liriope muscari, as well as underplanting late winter flowering shrubs such as sarcococca and Vibernum tinus. Prune off last year’s old foliage in Janurary to show off the new buds and flowers as they grow and deadhead if you want to avoid them self-seeding.

Your Guide To Helebore Varieties To Try Helleborus x hybridus (H. orientalis) Flowering from Feb to April, this is a popular hellebore with large dark green leaves and a wonderful range of flowers from from the deep pinky/red ‘Havington Red’ to the striking soft yellow ‘Yellow Lady’ with maroon speckling. The dark plum varieties such as ‘Single Dusky Grape’ (Ashwood Garden Hybrids) look great offset with snowdrops or bright blue Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’. They like partial shade. 45cm H

Helleborus niger Also known as the Christmas rose, this is a dainty white hellebore with yellow stamens and low growing leathery evergreen foliage. It’s great for containers and one of the earliest to flower (Jan to Feb). Likes partial shade. (30cm H) 12 | SE23 - February 2020

H. foetidus Another large architectural variety with masses of bell shaped pale green flowers with purple edges (Jan – April) above clumps of palm like dark green leaves. It likes partial shade. Tall at up to 80cm.

H. argutifolius This larger more sculptural helebore is a fabulous foliage plant with handsome serrated evergreen leaves that’ll give your garden evergreen interest and structure all year roud. The pale green clusters of flowers in pendants are in bloom from Janurary to March. Looks great with pink-red flowers of Pulmonaria rubra. Likes full sun or or partial shade. (50cm H)

H. ‘Penny’s Pink’ This is a real show-stopper (part of the Rodney Davey marbled group) has large flowers from late winter to mid-spring above the silver-marbled foliage. Anna’s Red’ is named after Anna Pavord is also bred by Rodney Davey, with masses of reddy purple flowers on dark stalks with marbled foliage. Happiest in partial shade, and flowering from February to April,. (50cm H).

H. x sternii More sun tolerant than most, this is a striking hellebore as much for its marbled silvery foliage as the pretty clusters of pink tinged green flowers (Feb – March). ‘Silver Dollar’ is a stunning variety with steely silver serrated leaves – best in containers in a sunny sheltered position. 40cm.

Gluten Free Chocolate Brownies Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk This is the recipe we used at our cookery class at fifty seven on the 11th January 2020.

Ingredients • • • • • •

375g Salted Butter 400g Dark Chocolate (chocolate mix) 480g Castor Sugar 6 Medium Eggs (egg & sugar mix) 225g Rice Flour Pinch Salt

Method 1) Preheat the oven to 1800C or to gas mark 4.

2) Prepare your tin measuring approximately 33cm x 23cm x 5cm by lining with parchment paper.

3) Cut the butter into small cubes and place in a saucepan with your chocolate to melt slowly over a low heat.

4) Stir chocolate mix until smooth and glossy.

Allow chocolate mix to cool.

5) Break the eggs into a bowl, add sugar, lightly beat together (egg & sugar mix).

7) Pour the egg & sugar mix into the cooled chocolate and beat well together with wooden spoon or spatula.

8) Finally add the flour and beat together well.

10) Bake on the middle shelf in the oven for a total of 30 minutes, after 15 minutes baking, open the oven and turn the brownie for a perfectly even bake.

What’s A Good Morning Routine?

I

n this month’s article I want to talk about what my morning routine isn’t. There’s a lot of talk in the fitness and wellbeing space around morning routines – long, elaborate, very fixed and regimented morning routines.

Now I do have certain things I like to get done in the morning, but I think the key thing about a morning routine is adaptability and flexibility.

Some of the routines you might have heard or read about are people getting up at 4:30am to meditate. Then they might check emails while their coffee brews, or they might make a green smoothie. Then they’re hitting the gym at 6:00/7:00am, and coming back to do a few emails/work, and then going through a cold shower routine, etc.

I think that’s fine and well if you’ve got the bandwidth to do it, or if you get so much value from that in terms of increased energy and better health. But for many of us that’s just not achievable. And what I think is really important about a morning routine is its degree of flexibility. Not so much that you can just pick and choose what you do, or if you can’t be bothered you don’t do it.

For example, one thing I like to do most mornings is 10 minutes of meditation. You could argue that everyone’s got 10 minutes in the morning, but there are some mornings when I’ve woken up, and my dog needs to go out, or I’ve decided to have that extra 10 minutes sleep, or whatever it is that’s happened. Or I’m simply up so early that I don’t want to make the extra 10 minutes, so I’ll move that to later in the day. I’ve got my degree of flexibility, but it doesn’t mean the meditation isn’t going to happen.

Other aspects of morning routine could be just gentle exercise or having a read in bed prior to getting up. All that stuff I’m fairly flexible on, but there are certain non-negotiables that I’ll stick to. Walking the dog is one of them. Getting up, having a coffee and then having a relatively chilled start to the day is another.

The dog walk is really great because that gets me out into the natural light. I’m exposed to some degree of sun, and it’s good to set my

circadian rhythm by getting out in the open air and having a gentle walk as well. And if I’m fasting, I won’t break my fast until around 9:30/10:00am. So, there are elements of my routine that are fixed, but there are also lots of elements that aren’t.

I want to try and take a little bit of the pressure off morning routines. I think having some set routine is important, but also being flexible and adaptable. I want to put some balance to the argument that we’re going to have these long elaborate morning routines to crush the day, seize the day, own the day, carpe diem and all this stuff, which I find a little bit too much sometimes. I hope that helps adds a little bit of balance to that perspective.

Why Does My Dog Bark?

lot of clients ask me what they can do about persistent barking. The short answer is, it depends! Dogs bark for all sorts of reasons and knowing why is an important part of the solution. Fortunately, the tone, duration and pauses between the barks often hold vital clues and can help owners understand what is going on.

Broadly, dogs bark for the following reasons: • Fear or anxiety- this can occur both inside and outside the home. Some dogs may have a fear response when people arrive at the front door or if they are approached by people or other dogs when they are on lead outside.

These dogs bark to warn the person or dog to stay away. Conversely, highly social dogs may bark in excitement at the prospect of meeting new people or simply to alert the owner that someone is at the door. So, trying to understand the dog’s emotional state is key to identifying the reasons for barking and then what to do about it.

• Attention seeking and boredom- barking is just another form of communication. Some dogs quickly learn that barking is the quickest way to get owner attention (even eye contact is attention). They can also learn to bark when they want something. Persistent demand barking can emerge in dogs that get easily frustrated.

• Territorial behaviour- a clear warning to other creatures they have breached an area the dog considers to be his territory. Dogs that at animals in the garden or through the patio doors, might be exhibiting this behaviour. Barking warns the other animal, including humans, to go no further and may involve aggressive display or actual aggression. It is thought the emotions driving territorial behaviour are closer to anger or irritation, rather than fear.

• Separation issues- some dogs bark excessively when left alone. This sort of barking arises out of severe frustration, anxiety or even panic. The dog is desperately trying to make contact with its owner.

• Play and excitement- dogs can get very barky while playing and this sort of barking

can also involve demand and attention seeking behaviour- like the dog that barks repetitively until you throw the ball again.

Some dog breeds have been selectively bred for barking - alerting the handlers to prey or a scent (Bloodhound), alerting the handler to location (terriers bark down foxholes), alerting the owner to changes in the environment (watch dog breeds), guarding/protection/herding (Dobermanns, German Shepherds). So, it pays to be aware of how barky your dog is likely to be and train accordingly from puppyhood.

Pups that grow into dogs with strong watchdog and territorial traits should be trained on appropriate behaviours around the front door and visitor arrivals as soon as possible. Alarm barking is okay if properly managed, but dogs that want to guard the home turf or protect owners can be problematic. These dogs will need more guidance with strangers and ‘new things’ and must be taught to respond promptly to owner direction. You do not want the dog deciding what action should be taken when a new person enters your home!

In general, attention and excitement barking is best ironed out by ignoring the barking and stopping the activity that prompts the barking. However, owners should be aware that stonewalling makes the dog try harder to get your attention, meaning the barking will get much worse before it improves; failure occurs when owners cave in too early. Barking arising out of fear and anxiety, including separation barking issues, will generally require the help of an expert.

n the run up to the Christmas period the men’s team registered a Four - One away win at Hungerford Town to record their first league win since the end of August. Despite losing the remaining two games of 2019 within the space of three days, the team have recently started to find some consistent form on the pitch registering two wins and two draws at the start of the new year moving further away from the bottom half of the table.

February marks LGBT History Month in the United Kingdom, the first of which took place in 2005. In recent years, Dulwich Hamlet has not shown strong support for this section of our community during this period but this continues its support all year round. This has resulted in a significant raise in members of the LGBT community attending games, knowing that they have a secure and welcoming place to watch football.

Just before Christmas, lifelong supporter Mishi Dulwich Morath sadly passed away. A member of the LGBT community himself, Mishi extremely influential in helping to create this amazing inclusive community football club that we all see today.

His ground breaking community work, helped Dulwich Hamlet to win the National Game Community Award in December at the Football Supporters’ Associations annual event.

Mishi also helped many fundraising events and in February 2015 a Dulwich Hamlet men’s XI played a fundraising friendly against Stonewall FC, Britain’s top-ranking LGBT football team. A midweek crowd of 369 attended the anti homophobia friendly, which raised money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

In the past two years, the Supporters’ Trust have launched a special LGBT Dulwich Hamlet scarf at the first home game of February, the profits of which helped raise funds for LGBT charities.

Last season, two hundred scarves, (featuring the colours of the LGBT Rainbow Flag) sold out before kick-off in the club’s fixture against Welling United.

This resulted in £400 being donated to both LGBT football organisations, Football v Homophobia and the Gay Football Supporter’s Network.

Again this year, the first weekend in February will see the Trust launch this season’s scarf, when it goes on sale at the men’s fixture

against Essex club, Chelmsford City on Saturday 1 February (15:00). This season the Trust will also have beanies, baseball and Trucker caps alongside badges with the club crest being changed from its famous pink and blue colours to feature those of the LGBT rainbow flag.

As you will now be aware, from the start of this season the club now has a woman’s squad with their first team playing in the London and South East League. Featuring a strong LGBT presence amongst the squad, the club and Supporters’ Club will also be celebrating LGBT history month at their home fixture on Sunday, 9 February (14:00 KO) when Fulham Fc are the visitors to Champion Hill.

Permian Monsters: Life Before the Dinosaurs 15 February – 1 November

Stages of Making Until 19 April Step into this immersive exhibition in The Studio where all the artworks have a story to tell about design, techniques and time. Inspired by the history of the Horniman and its collections, Stages of Making is produced by a collective of local community members working with artist Katie Schwab. Works include painted walls, table tops made from yoghurt pots and a giant rag-rug created from used t-shirts by members of the public. Visitors can join in daily making activities to contribute to a live archive or book for one of the special workshops. FREE.

252 million years ago, in a period called the Permian, life on Earth was dominated by extraordinary creatures. It was a time of fearsome sabre-toothed predators, giant insects and bizarre-looking sharks.

The Permian ended with a mass extinction that destroyed 90% of all life, paving the way for the Earth’s next great rulers… the dinosaurs.

In this fascinating, family-friendly exhibition, which is travelling to the UK for the first time, you can discover more about this mysterious time period. On display will be fossil skeletons as well as full-size models and animatronics that bring the Permian back to life. You can also sift through interactive dig pits and get creative in an art area.

A relaxed opening for families who are unable to visit when the Horniman is busy will take place on Thursday 16 April, 9–10am. For more information, please see the Special Events section. In addition, look out for Permian Monsters activities during the school holidays. Permian Monsters: Life Before the Dinosaurs is a travelling exhibition produced by Gondwana Studios.

Claire’s thoughtprovoking work draws on the theme of waste and the impact that humans have on their surroundings. Turn It Up: On Paradoxes Until 21 June Jide Odukoya’s photographic series shows a contrasting Nigeria through the lens of traditional weddings, highlighting how moments of extravagant celebration are an important part of Nigerian cultural identity because of the fragile wealth that supports it. Grasslands Garden Open year round Wander through wild landscapes in the Grasslands Garden, featuring spectacular plants from North American prairie and South African grasslands. Celebrating critically threatened wild landscapes, during the winter months visitors will be able to see beautiful architectural seed head heads and fading flower spikes. Linked to the World Gallery, the naturalistic planting scheme was devised by Olympic Park designer James Hitchmough. FREE.

Green Turtle Until May 2021 A magnificent taxidermy mount of a male Green Turtle, Chelonia mydas, on loan from the Natural History Museum is on display in the Natural History Gallery. How will climate change affect your pension?

H

ave you ever looked under the bonnet of your personal or company pension or stocks and shares ISA to see how your money is invested? I’m not talking about how much you have in the UK, Europe, Asia or Emerging Markets. I am talking about delving deeper and getting an understanding of the individual companies you are perhaps unwittingly investing in. Do they match or clash with your ethics, ideas and principles?

Would you, for example, be happy investing in a company that refuses to recognise climate change and continues to pollute the world with an ever-increasing carbon footprint? The tide is changing This week, the world’s largest asset manager, BlackRock, announced that it is to make climate change a pillar of its corporate strategy and mission. With 7 trillion dollars in assets under management, this is likely to have a huge impact and could reshape the investment and fund manager landscape. With a new set of steps, they intend to weave sustainability into their investment products including: • Offering sustainable versions of their portfolios • Dropping companies that produce coal • A tougher stance on companies that lag behind in matters of climate change 28 | SE23 - February 2020

Why this is important When a company of BlackRock’s size and influence makes a bold decision such as this, other investment houses tend to sit up and take notice.

And follow suit. This excellent start will instantly raise the bar for competitors. Although I believe they could do a lot more, eventually, this stance could spread to other areas that are viewed as unethical, socially unacceptable and irresponsible.

Currently, individual investors need to make a conscious decision to invest in companies that are environmentally and socially responsible via their pensions or stocks and shares portfolios. With the turning tide and momentum, environmental and socially responsible investing could soon become the norm.

Dare to dream Could there be a time in the future when all fund managers automatically invest in funds that are ethical and sustainable and take matters such as climate change into consideration? That would be great for advisers and investors.

Until that happens, you and your financial adviser will have to do the screening to ensure that your investments match your principles. This is not always an easy task and could involve quite a lot of digging. Just make sure your financial adviser is up to the task.
