Peckham wants its lido back!

ocal swimmers to host ironic bikini picnic to win back their old lido! Peckham has announced plans for a ‘Splashmob’ – an ironically named bikini-clad picnic at the site of the historic lido. It marks the half-way point in their crowd- funding campaign on Spacehive. The campaign is on track for its target, but needs more donations if it is to be successful by the end of July.

A pool party like no other

The day will see Peckham locals and lido-lovers alike gathering for what they’d normally do by a lido - reading, eating, reclining by a fountain and of course, doing lengths. The only thing missing from the photo: the pool itself. 12pm-4pm Sunday 10th July, Peckham Rye Lido’s old site “Peckham Lido isn’t open - yet. But come down in your swimmers, have a picnic & pose for the media, and maybe one day it will be. We’d love to see as many people the local area to come along and make merry on the grass where the lido once flowed. Then we’ll pose for what will hopefully be an iconic photograph, to show the world just how much Peckham people want their lido back. Background to the Campaign

Once a sparkling 50 metre outdoor swimming pool, the original Peckham Rye Lido served the swimmers and sun-bathers of South East London for over 50 years. But in 1987 it became out- dated and fell to disrepair. As a sign of changing trends of the time, it was closed and filled in. Now all that remains is a crumbling blue fountain and a mound of grass. In recent years, the tides have turned again. Peckham is among a growing number of British outdoor pools that are re-opening their turnstiles from Saltdean to Tarlair – as part of the renaissance of British Lidos and outdoor swimming.

pool, complete with wild swimming pond channeling the River Peck. The designs for ‘Peckham Beach’ also boast roof-top sunbathing areas, an outdoor cinema, gym and yoga studio, and a function room. It will be a modern mecca for sun-bathing, health and well-being, to attract all walks of life in South East London. But it will feed the local community in many other ways: • An invaluable asset for local schools and swimming clubs. If the next Michael Phelps or Rebecca Adlington lives in Peckham, no one would ever know, without a facility like this. • It breathes new life into a deprived area of London, creating at least 40 full and part time jobs that would suit a range of skill sets and qualifications. • It brings more people into the area and boosts the local economy. Local shops, suppliers, restaurants and bars in Peckham, Nunhead and East Dulwich will benefit from the greater footfall and investment. The first year of a baby’s life is one of the most important in terms of their long term development. It’s a time when their brain will grow more rapidly than at any other, and every movement your baby makes helps strengthen this growth. Swimming is one of the few things you can do at this young age, and it’s also one of the healthiest activities for you too! In water, babies are able to exercise every single muscle in their body - including some they would never even find on land. Sarah Ashton who runs Water Babies’ baby swimming classes in the South East London area, explains, “Whilst the emphasis in our sessions is very clearly on strengthening the bond you have with your baby, it’s also about having fun and increasing water confidence. Swimming from birth is also excellent for a baby’s development. Whilst being very gentle, it provides a complete physical workout, strengthening the heart, lungs and respiratory system which, in turn aids development of the brain. What’s more, regular

swimming can enhance baby awareness and improve eating and sleeping patterns as I was delighted to discover was the case with my own child!” Classes are kept small, and the fun relaxed atmosphere creates a sense of camaraderie within the group, with carers – and children – often socialising together afterwards. And don’t worry if you’re not a particularly strong swimmer – the water’s always shallow enough to stand up in, and rest assured you’ll never have to go underwater if you really don’t want to. the area, and a character appraisal document. This document will summarise the area’s history and describe the characteristics that make the area special. It will also contain examples of things that detract from the area’s character and which could be improved. The Council will use the document when assessing development proposals in the conservation area, to ensure that new developments are suitable. We understand that the consultant will recommend extending the conservation area up Dartmouth Road to the Library on one side and to the end of the shopping parade on the other side. He will also recommend that the boundary be extended onto Perry Vale to encompass the small parade of shops. A report will be issued in September and public consultation will be organised for the autumn. The Mayor of Lewisham will then consider the proposals by March 2009. We have two more venues for The 23 Club. On Wednesday 23rd July, we’re meeting at 8pm at Le Querce, 68 Brockley Rise, 020 8690 3761. If you’d like to spend an evening with other people who are passionate about SE23, then just ring the restaurant to book (mentioning it's for The 23 Club). They’ll seat us all on one or two big tables, depending on numbers. Everyone pays for their own food/wine. In August, the 23rd falls on a Saturday so we thought this would be a good opportunity for a family-oriented, Forest Hill Society Summer Barbecue at lunchtime. Once again Harris Girls’ Academy is celebrating the literary arts with opportunities open to our local community, including performances, readings and talks. The theme for 2016 is Growing Up, with many of the scheduled events focusing on childhood, adolescence and old age. This year all of our public events will be run in partnership with the Ivy House, our local Community led Inn on Stuart Road. Students will be taking part in a range of activities linked to the theme throughout the week including hosting a tea party for residents from an elderly care home, a pop-up bookshop at our local primary school, performances by the Combat Veteran Players and the burial of our very own time capsule! The Return of the Punch

hen planning a summer party nothing is easier, or more social, than a summer punch. However, for many years this communal cocktail has been forgotten, or if remembered thoughts of student experiments send shudders down the spine and the mind quickly moves on. If you are able to get past recollections of that fateful evening when everything to hand was tipped into a pot, then it is time to reconsider the punch. If you are not; then think of this as a little immersion therapy – although not literally of course. Punch was introduced into Britain in the 1600’s from India. Apparently our word is derived from the old Hindustani word ‘paanstch’ for five – other sources claim it is from the Sanskrit ‘panc’ also meaning five – either way it is the number of ingredients that were traditionally included – and is a rule of thumb that holds true today. The traditional blend composed; sweet (sugar), sour (lemon), alcohol, water and spices. Records from 1644 show an East Indian Company employee writing one of the first mentions of this drink, where he described the chief alcohol ingredient being arrack; itself one of the oldest spirits known to man and distilled in India from the sap of the coconut tree. The blend was a big hit with British sailors and accordingly its popularity spread, not least to the West Indies where rum based punch was born. Today if you remember the simple fivemantra and the notion of balancing sweet with sour, avoiding overly syrupy sweet concoctions and not over doing it with the alcohol you will arrive at the ideal drink the ideal solution for a Hectic Host who wants to enjoy her or his own party and not play bartender. Forgo orange juice, which although high in vitamin C (the effect of which will be nullified anyway by the alcohol in favour of lighter juices such as apple or cranberry which are less acidic and have a lower sugar content).

Our Roullier White punch du jour is: one-part lemon juice, two-parts vodka, four-parts dry ginger ale and four- parts apple juice. Float with lots of ice, torn mint and raspberries. Fruit cups or summer cups are a British version of punch, they are usually gin based and contain a blend of several spirits rather than just one. James Pimms from Newham in Kent, ran an oyster bar opposite Buckingham Palace, to which it is said the royal family were frequent visitors. Pimms invented an easy to drink cocktail that would was served as an accompaniment to his popular shellfish. It is not difficult therefore to imagine how Pimms became a staple at every garden party in Britain. To mix a perfect Pimms add one part Pimms to two parts dry ginger ale, add borage, mint and orange slices. Borage is a nice alternative to cucumber, whilst having a taste that is reminiscent of the vegetable, also has sweet honeyed notes. Sipsmith London Cup is crafted from the company’s own London dry gin, infused with Earl Grey tea, borage, lemon verbena and other botanicals. Simply mix with lemonade, ice and lots of lemon wheels. Tarta de Santiago Santiago Tart Filling • 6 Whole Eggs • 200g Caster Sugar • 200g Ground Almonds • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder • 1 tablespoon Frangelico if you're feeling naughty

Midsummers Day has been and gone, but with school holidays approaching summer is really only just beginning for many of us. Here is a recipe for Santiago Tart, a traditional almond cake or pie from Galicia, Spain which can be traced back to the Middle Ages. I hope it helps to get you into the holiday mood!. Prep time: Up to 3 hours. Cook time: 45 minutes Serves 8-10

Sweet Pastry Base • 12oz Plain Flour • 7oz Diced Unsalted Butter • 2oz Icing Sugar • 2 egg yolks • 2 tablespoons Cold Water Pour the flour and butter into a large bowl. Using your finger tips rub the flour and butter together until it resembles breadcrumbs, stir in the icing sugar. Make a well in the centre of the 'breadcrumb' mix and then add the two yolks and 1 tablespoon of water (you might not need all the water, so it is better to add it a bit at a time). Using the back of a butter knife, slowly stir in the yolk and water mix into the flour. Once it has come together, get your hands in there and work it until it becomes a firm dough. Don’t worry if you don’t need to use all the water to get to this stage. Wrap in cling film and chill for 2 hours. Once the 2 hours are up, remove the pastry from the fridge and place on a floured surface. Roll it out until it is about 5mm thick. Carefully lay it over your pastry tin and gently push it into all the edges. Trim off any excess pastry and leave to one side while you prepare the filling. 14 | SE23 - July 2016

Crack your eggs into a large bowl and roughly whisk then add all the other ingredients and thoroughly whisk again until it becomes a smooth batter . Pour it into your pastry case (No need to blind bake the pastry) Only fill it about three quarters full because the baking powder will cause it to rise. Carefully pop it into your pre-heated oven, for around 45 minutes at 1500c or until the filling resembles a sponge and a skewer can go into and come out clean. Once it has cooled, you can garnish the top with plenty of icing sugar. It traditionally has the cross of Santiago de Compostela on, but if you don’t tell Natalia, you can keep it plain. A nice alternative is to use coconut instead of almond and zest a lime into the mix. Enjoy!

The Silver Anniversary Horniman Art Exhibition

elebrating the Silver Anniversary of the Friends of the Horniman Art Exhibition. The first weekend of June 2016 saw the 25th Art Exhibition of the Friends of Horniman Museum and Garden held in the wonderful setting of the conservatory of the museum. For our silver anniversary, we found that we continue to draw in both visitors and potential buyers of original art at affordable prices as over thirty artists took part this year with over 250 exhibits between them. The reviews received showed that our event continues to improve in presentation and quality, with this event seeing the return of some well-established artists and some new, all demonstrating different styles which appealed to all. The Friday evening of the Private View was well attended by Friends, artists and families and the formal opening speech was provided by my predecessor as Friends’ Chair and longterm Friend, Ann Wallace, who gave an excellent review of the exhibition’s history and the current exhibition. The weather that evening was dreadful and many of those attending were in winter coats, which is why it was a pleasure to see the weather improve over the weekend with Sunday as hot as it could ever be in the conservatory. The art exhibition is the major fundraising event carried out by the Friends and it is possible only thanks to all those involved; from the Friends who volunteer their time to make it run smoothly, the exhibition chair, Deborah Masters and her team who co-ordinate the exhibition and the artists, Anthony and his staff from the Horniman Café for the wonderful refreshments and to last, but not least, the museum’s director, Janet Vitmayer, who generously allows us the exhibition space of the conservatory and the support of the museum staff over the weekend. This year, special thanks go to Hannah Laws, the museum’s liaison officer with the Friends, who played an enormous role in ensuring the exhibition was a success, especially by helping me to hold the raffle and hand out the raffle prizes on the event’s last, and very hot, day.

Our Silver Anniversary Art Exhibition excelled on many levels, from the quality of the exhibits, the number of visitors, to the number of sales and funds subsequently raised. The raffle itself was very popular with visitors who saw a great opportunity to be the lucky winner of an original work of art by one of the exhibitors. A list of those lucky winners can be found on the museum’s website and in the museum. As always, I had a great time over the weekend, viewing the exhibits, chatting with artists and visitors and it was a great pleasure to receive such good reviews of our event. I wish to give a big thank you to all who took part and especially those who visited and purchased some of the exhibits as it enables the Friends to donate much needed funds for projects at the museum. Another exhibition is already planned for June next year so please pencil it in your diary. I have, and am already looking forward to it.

What does it take to get a residential mortgage these days?

he mortgage market has changed considerably since just before the credit crunch, where at one point, all you needed was a pulse to get a mortgage. Things have changed somewhat, and knowing a bit about the market can help, especially if you want to get the best deals available. BACKGROUND: The days when lenders worked on an “income multiples” system are more or less over. Back then, lenders would work on up to 5 times your salary; in other words, if you earned £60,000 a year, you could borrow up to £300,000. Many lenders would deduct things like credit commitments from the calculation, but it was quite easy to determine how much you could borrow simply by knowing a lender’s income multiples. Things are a little more sophisticated now. SO HOW MUCH CAN YOU BORROW? These days, lenders use an “affordability calculator” to determine how much you can borrow. Available on most lenders websites, the affordability calculator is essentially a budget planner, and takes into consideration your income vs expenditure. Certain items are more heavily weighted than others. For example, your credit commitments carry much more weight than your gym membership. PROVING YOUR INCOME: Mortgage lenders love “Employees” and will accept your latest payslip as proof of income and ask for little or nothing else. The Self-Employed have a much tougher time. Lenders will require three years’ worth of accounts or SA302s and are only interested in the net profit declared. The self-employed are able to pay less tax through putting expenses through their business, however this works against them when it comes to borrowing for a mortgage. HOW MUCH DEPOSIT DO YOU NEED? Many lenders will now accept a deposit of 5% for Helpto-Buy mortgages however, for the rest of us, a minimum deposit of 15% would be required to get a decent deal. Generally, lenders offer better deals

for those with bigger deposits; as a general rule of thumb, think of paying down 25% of the value of the property or more to get the best deals. WHAT ABOUT CREDIT SCORE? Whilst a perfect credit score is essential to get the very best deals, those who have had problems in the past need not despair. Bankruptcy is obviously a complete non-starter however some lenders lay accept an applicant who has had arrears on credit commitments if they occurred more than 12 months ago; especially if there is a good reason for it, such as illness or redundancy. Lenders aren’t keen on those who are careless with their finances. Lots of debt, not being on the voters roll, arrears and moving house too often are all bad for your credit score. REPAYING YOUR MORTGAGE: Interest-only mortgages are no longer acceptable unless you have lots of equity in the property or a sound repayment vehicle. Generally, lenders would insist on a capital repayment mortgage over a term that ends at or before your retirement date. This means that younger applicants are able to take mortgages with a longer term which in turn reduces monthly repayments and increases affordability. Leaving it too late can therefore be an expensive mistake. WHAT ABOUT FEES? Good news, if you’re not a fan of upfront fees: Most lenders have deals where they pay the survey, product arrangement and even Solicitor’s fees for you. This however does have some impact on the interest rate; effectively they give it to you with one hand and take it away with the other. What you can’t avoid however is Stamp Duty, which is likely to be your second biggest cash outlay next to your deposit.

English Hardy Geraniums

bout Rozanne, Ann Folkard and Margaret Wilson.. (or advice on English hardy geraniums). Pretty, a great filler, easy to grow, slug resistant but loved by bees, long flowering, and shade tolerant, geraniums are an absolute must. With so many to choose from, here are a few of the best.

Never Ending Blooms One of the most popular geraniums, Geranium ‘Rozanne’ has striking large blue flowers with white centres and lovely mottled foliage. Happy in sun or part shade, its spreading habit makes it great ground cover, but do give it space. Most impressive of all is its amazingly long and late flowering period, from June right through to November. Newer hybrids include 'Azure Rush’ a more compact version of 'Rozanne’ with paler blue flowers and ‘Lilac Ice’, which is less spreading and has lighter foliage and pale lilac pink flowers. Or try 'Pink Penny’ which will fill your garden with hot pinky/mauve flowers from June to October. (These newer hybrids take a while to get to local garden centres but are available on line from Crocus (crocus.co.uk) or specialist nurseries.)

True Blues ‘Johnson’s Blue’ is another popular classic (voted RHS plant of the Centenary in 2013), with delicate foliage and a mass of papery blue petals from May to August. It’s great under roses or shrubs, in full sun or part shade – but too much shade can make it a bit leggy. Similar varieties include the newer ‘Brookside,’ with masses of intense blue flowers, and its slightly bigger seedling, ‘Orion’, which has larger, more violet blue flowers, on stalks high above the foliage.

Fab Foliage The spring flowering geranium phaeum with their wands of small flowers and striking patterned leaves are great for a shady spot - whether dry or damp, amongst ferns. Geranium phaeum black widow is very stylish with its deep purple-black flowers and beautiful dark leaf markings. ‘Samobor’ is very similar, with slightly browner flowers and paler leaves. Or for something less somber, ‘Alba’ has airy sparkly white flowers, great for lighting up 30 | SE23 - July 2016

dark corners. The more unusual varieties ‘Margaret Wilson’ with its purple flowers against and lime green variegated foliage and ‘Rose Madder’ with gorgeous brownish pink flowers are also worth looking out for.

Small And Sweet Compact, low growing (around 20cm high) with dainty flowers, geranium sanguineum varieties make great ground cover for smaller spaces. Geranium sanguineum bloody cranesbill has dark green feathery foliage and vivid magenta flowers from March until June while the similar ‘Tiny Monster’ has a mass of larger shocking pink flowers until late autumn. Softer sanguinium ‘Album’ has small pure white flowers, May to June, but the beautiful pale pink flowers of sanguineum var. striatum will keep going until August.

Hot Stuff The bigger and bolder Geranium psilostemon with its vibrant magenta flowers with a purple black eye is stunning, but needs space (about a square meter). It flowers from June to August and the leaves turn fiery red in Autumn. The hybrid, ‘Patricia’ has the same dark eye but brighter pink flowers and is slightly more compact (60cm high) and longer flowering. The rangier Geranium ‘Ann Folkard’ has bright green early foliage and rich magenta flowers with the dark eye. Again it needs space scrambling to a meter and flowers until September.
