It has been a fantastic month of sunshine, football (I love the World Cup!) and brilliant local events. As always SE23 is full of fabulous pages of local events, starting on page 8, with plenty to keep you busy this month. SE23 is the only place to find out what is happening in the area. If you are running an event in the area, please do e-mail details through for a free listing. We rely on all our lovely, local advertisers to be able to produce this magazine, so if you do give them a call or drop them an e-mail, please do say where you heard about them. The Last Word this month goes to Forest Hill resident, Annabelle Dowler. Find out why her voice might be more familiar than her face on page 32. Business Profile

Proudly independent and passionate about service, Puccini Kitchens have been designing and installing beautiful, high-quality kitchens in London homes for years.

Beautiful, Enduring Kitchens

Creativity & Craft

As recommended on the East Dulwich Forum, and seen in ‘Real Homes’ magazine and the Sunday Mirror magazine, local company Puccini Kitchens’ reputation has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Owner Andrew Robertson has over 20 years of experience in the kitchens business, and is incredibly well-regarded for his creativity and attention to detail in helping clients to achieve the style and functionality they aspire to within they budget they have available. Under Andrew’s stewardship, Puccini Kitchens design and install individual, high-quality kitchens using the best British and European ranges. They are also one of a small and exclusive set of UK providers of the stylish Italian brand doimocucine.

The company believes that individuality is the key to a successful kitchen that reflects both the practical needs and the preferred style of the client. “There are so many kitchen options available to clients,” says Andrew. “Gloss, matte, wood and special finish kitchens are all in play. The modular aspect of modern kitchens means that even clients who opt for similar styles can create very individual looks by using different materials, colours and cabinet configurations.”

Making Spaces Work The Puccini team works extensively in southeast London and is familiar with the varying requirements of both the period and modern housing stock in the area. “Every kitchen is different,” says Andrew. “With many people now remodelling or extending their homes, we have become very adept at customising our kitchen designs to a variety of room shapes and sizes - no matter how small, large or awkward! With good planning and a bit of creativity, there is always a way to achieve both style and all-important functionality.” 10 | SE23 - July 2018

Puccini Top Tips • Plan, Plan, Plan! Take your time to consider

how you want to use your kitchen, as this will help the designer to craft the bespoke configurations, storage and appliance solutions to best suit your needs. • Install more power points than you think you need. We all have a number of kitchen appliances, and a good quantity of sockets provides a slick finish and avoids the need for unsightly extension leads and double plugs at a later stage. • There is no such thing as too much storage. Tall larder units, big wide drawers for cutlery and deep drawers for saucepans will help keep your kitchen organised and uncluttered. Out-of-sight integrated waste and recycling bins are also very helpful.

“We would like to thank you for helping us to create such a fantastic kitchen and space in our new extension. It has really transformed our house and become the heart of our home.” SE23 - July 2018 | 11

Fab Foliage

P

lants with variegated foliage have grown on me. Some are nicer than others - I generally prefer the ones with white/creamy coloured markings to the more yellow pigments. But just a few dotted around create bright golden or silvery accents, adding drama and contrast and lightening up shady corners.

blotches that are tinged pink in autumn. Mine looks pretty with a pale pink rose growing through it. Happy in sun or part shade.

Shrubs

Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Overdam’ Good for: Height and autumn/winter interest - An upright grass with cream-striped leaves and airy purplish flower sprays becoming pale brown in winter. Lovely! Carex ‘Ice Dance’ Good for: Evergreen groundcover - Tough and useful evergreen grass with shiny narrow evergreen leaves edged with creamy white margins. A smart plant for tough spots in sun or part shade. Hakonechloa macra ‘Alboaurea’ Good for: Underplanting and edging - This low growing grass has vividly striped yellow and green leaves and spills over pathways softening edges. It likes sun or part shade.

Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Silver Queen’ Good for: Evergreen structure - This stylish shrub has small greyish green and cream leaves with contrasting black stems. It gets big but is easy to clip to shape – and the foliage is great for flower arranging. Likes sun or part shade. Cornus alba ‘Elegantissima’ Good for: Winter interest - Cornus (dogwoods) are grown for their red stems revealed in winter when the leaves fall, but this variety also has elegant pale green and white leaves that shimmer in the sun. It works best in full sun, planted somewhere visible during the winter. Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata’ Good for: Scented winter flowers - This classy rounded shrub has glossy green leaves with fine golden margins and clusters of deliciously scented pink flowers in January. Tricky to get established but worth it. It prefers a sunny sheltered spot. Fatsia japonica ‘Spider’s Web’ Good for: Architectural leaves - This new Fatsia variety has the trademark handsome evergreen leaves but with a delicate sprinkling of pretty white markings. It looks lovely with white-flowers and adds light to areas of dappled shade, where it’s most happy. Weigela ‘Nana Variegata’ Good for: Spring flowers - I inherited one of these deciduous shrubs and have grown to love the light cream and olive green leaves, plus the mass of pale pink flowers in May. Prune after flowering and grow in sun or shade.

Climbers

Care

Herbaceous Perennials Iris pallida ‘Variegata’ Good for: Adding drama and structure - With boldly striped blue-green and white leaves leaves and lilac blue flowers, this is a showstopper! Likes a sunny well-drained border. Hosta ‘Francee’ Good for: Creating a lush feel - This smart hosta has large stylish green leaves with contrasting white margins and spikes of blue summer flowers. They need protection from slugs or grow in a large container in a shady area. Lovely with ferns.

Grasses

Trachelospermum jasminoides ‘Variegata ‘ (Star Jasmine) Best for: Lightening up a fence - A rarer form of the popular evergreen climber with the same fragrant white flowers in mid-summer . The glossy olives green leaves are splashed with creamy white 12 | SE23 - July 2018

They tend to need a bit more sun than nonvariegated variety, but this varies. If plants lose their variegation cut off the plain green leaves. Janine Winlaw - Writer & Gardener Follow me on instagram @janinewinlaw

Food & Drink with Suzanne James

Summer Pudding Loaf

Serves: 6 Prep Time: Overnight Cook Time: 10 minutes or less If you have been hard at work on your vegetable plot or allotment all year then this is the time when you feel the full benefit of your labour. Nothing feels better than loading up a basket with home grown fruit and vegetables, and, thanks to our new netting, there will be masses of fruit this year as the weather really has been perfect & we have succeeded in keeping the birds off. This success can of course lead to its own problems, as you can only use up, or freeze, so much fruit at a time, but this is a lovely recipe that should help if you have a ‘glut’ like we do!!

Ingredients • 1kg / 2lb 4oz mixed summer berries – we used blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, redcurrants all from the allotment! • 250g / 9oz caster sugar • 1 large unsliced white loaf or thick-sliced white bread (preferably slightly stale)

Method 1) Line one 450g / 1lb loaf tin with a double layer of cling film 2) Prepare the fruit by removing any leaves and stalks. Place the blueberries and redcurrants in a pan with the sugar and a couple of tablespoons of water and bring to the boil. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the berries have just softened and burst (don’t overcook). You don’t need to cook the strawberries, raspberries or blackberries so just add them to the pan at the end. 3) Using a sharp knife, cut the crusts off all sides of the loaf, then cut the loaf into medium-thick slices along the length of the bread, so that you have long slices rather than square slices.

4) Place one slice of bread in the base of the tin, trimming to fit. Place a slice of bread either side of the inside of the tin and cut slices to fit both ends of the tin. 5) Spoon a little juice from the cooked berries into the base to make sure that all the bread is well soaked in juice. Add the fruit gradually, making sure the bread soaks up all the juices and becomes red. When the tin is full of fruit, top with another slice of bread to seal it. 6) Spoon over a couple of tablespoons of juice from the berries that are left in the pan. You should have about half the amount of fruit leftover, which is lovely to serve alongside each slice. 7) Cover the pan with cling film and place the pudding in the fridge overnight. Place a weight, such as a can of baked beans, on top of the pudding to press the mixture down, this will ensure that the mixture soaks into the bread and the pudding is firm enough to cut. 8) To Turn out, peel back the cling film, then turn the pudding upside-down onto a plate and remove the cling film. Cut into slices and serve with the remaining berries and juice.

In Season This Month Fruits & Nuts - Apples, Apricot, Aubergine, Blackberries, Blackcurrants, Blueberries, Loganberries, Peaches, Plums, Raspberries, Redcurrants, Strawberries, Whitecurrants, Cobnuts, Hazelnuts. Vegetables & Herbs - Artichokes, Aubergines, Beetroot, Broccoli, Cabbages, Carrots, Cauliflower, Chard, Courgettes, Cucumber, Fennel, French Beans, Garlic, Kohlrabi, Lamb’s Lettuce, Onions, Pak Choi, Peas (inc. Sugar Snaps) Potatoes, Radishes, Rocket, Runner Beans, Salsify, Scorzonera, Samphire, Sorrel, Spinach, Sweetcorn, Tomatoes, Watercress. Meat & Game - Lamb, Rabbit, Venison, Wood Pigeon. A report will be issued in September and public consultation will be organised for the autumn. The Mayor of Lewisham will then consider the proposals by March 2009. We have two more venues for The 23 Club. On Wednesday 23rd July, we’re meeting at 8pm at Le Querce, 68 Brockley Rise, 020 8690 3761. If you’d like to spend an evening with other people who are passionate about SE23, then just ring the restaurant to book (mentioning it's for The 23 Club). They’ll seat us all on one or two big tables, depending on numbers. Everyone pays for their own food/wine. In August, the 23rd falls on a Saturday so we thought this would be a good opportunity for a family-oriented, Forest Hill Society Summer Barbecue at lunchtime. The venue is the Perry Hill pub, 78 Perry Hill, 020 8699 5076. This is for Forest Hill Society members and their guests. We hope as many of you as possible will support these events.

Interior Design Advice with Bradley Viljoen

Bathroom Basics

H

ave you walked into a bathroom with washbag and towel, desperately looking for a spare surface, or hook upon which to hang discarded clothes? I know I have. I have also banged my head countless times on those glass shelves placed precariously over a washbasin. A bathroom can be one of the trickiest spaces to design. For a room that has an ostensibly simple purpose, the considerations and compromises can be enormous. Our temptation is to rush to style the room but, before doing so, we must first consider the basic requirements that need to be met to achieve a design that is both practical and comfortable. These basics may seem obvious but, from experience, are often overlooked. • Toilets must flush well. I don’t think I need to expand on this point but so often they do not, and it is intensely annoying. • Towel rails, preferably heated, need to be large enough to accommodate the maximum number of towels likely to be in use. Damp towels hanging over doors or steaming on radiators is never a good look. • Water pressure needs to be high enough to deal with the multiplicity of household uses. If you want a reasonable flow rate from your taps, rather than a trickle, you will need to ensure they are compatible with your home’s water pressure. • Taps should ideally consist of a mixer spout, particularly in the wash basin, allowing the user to choose the temperature. Frankly, there is nothing worse than cupping your hands and switching from one tap to another. • Storage and work surfaces are never sufficient to house toiletries, hair driers and all manner of things. Find opportunities to incorporate sufficient storage to house it all. Uber-styled contemporary washbasins that seem to float on air are exciting but are they suitable for your needs? Any bathroom clutter is mostly avoidable and detracts from achieving a stylish design. • Lighting needs to do its job. Task lighting for making up or shaving, is better served by two

26 | SE23 - July 2018

wall lights or two lighting insets in the mirror to reduce shadowing. For all bathroom lighting ensure the correct level of IP rating, denoting water resistance, serves the zone where it is being located. For ambience, get your lights onto a dimmer switch, as the level and quality of light you require in the morning and evening differs. • Mirrors can be used effectively to bounce light back into the room. However, if your windows are open or often unscreened, consider carefully what is being reflected to the outside. • Wall surfaces need to be chosen carefully; porcelain tiling is often over applied. Tiling walls up to the ceiling and on the floor results in sound reverberation. Tiling also results in a cooler room; perfect for summer but uncomfortable in winter unless you have good underfloor heating. There is no need to place tiles where water is not present or where only occasional splashes occur. Using good quality moisture resistant bathroom paints will serve just as well. • Planning your layout seems obvious but consider the proportions of the room against the items you wish to incorporate. Calculate the space required to open shower doors, cupboards, or the distance required behind you when you bend over the basin. Avoid putting the basin directly beside the toilet so that you don’t rub shoulders with it when getting up or down. It isn’t only the floor space that needs to be analysed but also the relationship between items. • Plumbing needs to be studied carefully against the intended plan. Is your newly located shower or toilet waste pipe served by the existing plumbing or will the floor boards need to come up to lay new pipework? If these bathroom basics leave you exhausted or your budget does not stretch to a full stripout, you need not feel that you are without choices. I have found that a modest redecoration, introduction of interesting mirrors and pictures/ prints, mood-enhancing paint and lighting, new window treatment, or simply buying new towels will give you a new look if planned well. www.bradleyviljoendesign.com

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer

What to do when your energy is low

W

e all have moments when we don’t feel as energised or inspired as we’d like, and we feel a little disconnected from everything. However, there are many things you can do when your energy is low. Here are my top five tips.

Move As human beings we were designed to move, but many of us simply don’t do enough of that any more. The best way to energise yourself is to move your body. Get all your joints moving. Walking is a fantastic way to do this, or you could use something like a kettle bell; I get up and do 10 kettle bell squats every hour and I might pump the kettle bell to work my biceps too. You can also use it for tricep extensions, there are many different ways to use it for movement. Having something around in the house or in your office to help you get the blood pumping is really good. Walking, standing up regularly if you’re sat down a lot during the day, stretching out the body and all the main muscle groups all help.

Drink Water Many of us walk around in a state of sub optimal hydration, but drinking a cold class of water, will immediately energise you. Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day too. Herbal tea is also good, but try to avoid sugary drinks, which cause a quick increase and subsequent slump in

blood sugar levels. Plus of course caffeine is an artificial stimulant, so, water or water based drinks are best.

Eat a Fat or Protein Based Snack You can get some reasonably good snack bars now that are protein based. Examples of foods that contain good fats for snacking include nuts, seeds and avocados. For protein, you could have some good quality chicken, eggs, almonds, cheese, yoghurt, chick peas or hummus. Vegetables complement a protein snack nicely as they contain carbohydrates.

Connect If you’re feeling under energised, connect with something that energises you. Is it a friend that you can phone? Maybe you read something motivational by your favourite author for example. Maybe you just connect with something you really love, so think about the weekend when you’re going to be doing that hike out in nature. That will give you a little spark of energy as well.

Take a Nap If you’ve got the option, take a nap if you’re not feeling very energised. Maybe you just don’t have enough sleep cycles under your belt for the day ahead. I appreciate napping isn’t possible for everyone, but even just closing your eyes for five, ten minutes, whether that’s a meditation, a quick relaxation, just trying to reinvigorate and re-inspire yourself can also be very effective. So, move, drink water, eat a fat or protein based snack, connect, and take a nap if you can, or a micro break. All fantastic ways to gain energy.

Thursday 26 July The Bigger Picture Presents: The Big Sick @8pm Director: Michael Showalter USA 2017 | 120 minutes. | Cert: 15 Written by its (loosely-based) real life protagonists (Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani) and starring one of them (Kumail Nanjiani), this tells of a fledgling Pakistani stand-up in America who has a relationship with a white woman who he meets through an audience heckle in Chicago. He does not tell his immigrant Muslim family, who wish him to have an arranged marriage. When he admits to Emily these pressures (and that he cannot see a permanent relationship evolving), she leaves him. However, she then falls very seriously ill (the Big Sick of the title), and Kumail finds himself working with (and frequently against) her parents to support her as her conditions worsens. We say: It’s a ‘Rom Com’ which is really romantic and really funny! www.thebiggerpic.co.uk. Financial Matters with Akwasi Duodu

The Seven Habits Of The Financially Astute

W

hat can we learn from those successful with money? Let’s put aside anyone who was born into money, for they have an unfair advantage. We are talking about those with more modest means who make the most of their money. How do they do it? What are their habits? How can we learn from them? To make the most of their wealth, the financially astute may consciously or unconsciously hold onto a set of money management principles that protect their wealth and ensure that their money is working as hard as possible. Here are some of them.

4) They put their money to work

1) They borrow wisely or not at all

Every young person paying rent probably aspires towards owning their own property, and rightly so. With house prices at astronomical levels, property ownership is no longer a right, but a privilege, and saving for a deposit whilst paying rent is easier said than done. The financially astute would accept that successfully getting onto the property ladder was a huge challenge and would need careful planning, consideration and the assistance of an expert.

Despite the lessons of the credit crunch, many people would rather take out a loan or pay with a credit card than save up to purchase the things they want. This, buy now pay later attitude can be very expensive and damaging in the long term. The debit interest paid on unsecured borrowing is usually much too high to be offset by the highest returning investment. The financially astute would rather save to make their purchases than borrow.

2) They control their expenditure Temptation is rife in this "I can have it now” world we live in. For example, you could walk into a car showroom today and drive out with a brand-new car without having opened your wallet. How tempting is that? The difference between the financially astute and the financially inept is that the financially astute know when it is right to say NO to themselves. Learning to keep your desires under control can make a huge difference to your long term financial position.

3) They have a plan Few people end up in a strong financial position by accident. A strong financial position takes years to build and like any building, takes design, planning and execution to become a reality. The financially astute understand that trying to do it all themselves may be unrealistic and would happily pay an expert to help them with the most difficult parts of the plan; the design and planning. Then they then need do is the fun bit - execute. 30 | SE23 - July 2018

Getting a decent return on your savings is difficult in this low interest rate environment. That’s no excuse for leaving your hard-earned cash in a lacklustre savings account that doesn’t keep pace with inflation. Rainy day money is one thing but anything longer term should be viewed with a discerning eye. With their adviser, the financially astute would find a better deal for their cash assess the viability of investing some of your savings in stocks and shares for a potentially better return.

5) They own their dwelling

6) They insure what they value What are the most valuable things in your life? Are they material things like your home, contents, car or bike? Or they more abstract things like your health and ability to work? What about your life itself? What’s it worth to someone else, perhaps someone who depends on you financially? The financially astute would prioritise and insure what they value.

7) They invest – in themselves Increasing your ability to earn through learning is often overlooked but could go a long way towards boosting your value in the marketplace. The financially astute understand that becoming financially secure is a lot easier when you earn more; more importantly, investing in yourself should give you the self-confidence to know your worth and the conviction to ask for what you deserve. Around Dulwich with Sarah Pylas July Round-up

I

thought the two perks of my husband being away in Russia for the World Cup would be 1. Not having to watch as much football on the telly and 2. Having the bed all to myself. I could not have been more wrong – on both counts! My 8-year old cheerfully informed me that we would not just be watching the England matches, but EVERY game. And, that he would be watching the evening games from the comfort of my bed, where he conveniently – but not very convincingly - falls asleep as soon as the final whistle blows! The cat has also decided he deserves a shot at being my bed companion, so between my son fidgeting and the cat meowing in my ear because he wants to be fed, petted, or merely make his presence known to me, I’m a bit over the World Cup already. With my resident babysitter away, my social life has been reduced to school hours only. The East Dulwich Picturehouse do a great deal on a Monday and members can see a film for only £5.50 (£7.50 for non-members). This month, I have seen Book Club and Ocean’s 8 and still made it back in time for school pick-up! There’s plenty of daytime fun to look forward to around Dulwich in July. School’s almost out for summer, so expect playgrounds from the Village to Forest Hill to be transformed into carnivals, beach scenes and dream holiday destinations. Fairlawn Primary School is holding a fiesta of colour (7 July) with real ale, cider, Prosecco & Pimms bar, live music, homemade hot & cold food, bouncy castles and lots of stalls. Down the hill, Goose Green Primary School is holding a summer carnival (7 July) including a Samba procession through the streets of ED.

Heber Primary School is having a Heber-besidethe-sea summer fair (15 July) with a children’s steel band performing on the bandstand and a sea-themed fancy dress parade. St. Augustine Church is hosting a charity concert (8 July) with all proceeds donated to the Russell Trust Food Bank. The Dulwich Outdoor Gallery has organised two guided street art walks (15 July and 12 August) with Amanda Greatorex. Learn how this project came about and all the information on the art and artists old and new. Tickets are £15. There’s much going on in the evenings too! Belair House is hosting a season of summer night film screenings. Food and a fully stocked bar will be available throughout the evening. The film for July is Murder on the Orient Express and in August, Grease is the word. Greece will be the word for me too in August, so I will miss the launch of the new Wild Child Festival in Dulwich (17-19 August). This is a new children’s festival designed by parents for 0-11 year-olds and with an emphasis on arts, creative play and circus skills! Now, please excuse me while I find out which game ‘we’ will be watching tonight... As always, details of all local news, events and ticket information can be found on our website and on Instagram @arounddulwich.

The Last Word – Annabelle Dowler The one thing you couldn’t do without? Shannons Garden Centre and the plant stall at Catford Broadway. I have an addiction to buying plants for the garden and have also recently discovered the gorgeous Alexandra Nurseries in Penge. Such a magical place to have a coffee surrounded by beautiful and quirkily displayed flowers and plants.

Do you belong to any groups? I do ballet at the Honor Oak pub and am a member of the fantastic Green Tree Chorus Choir. I also like to try to hit a few balls at Sydenham Tennis club and Mayow park.

Your favourite place for a night out? I love Little Nan’s Pop up in Stag and Bow in Forest Hill. It’s such a cool treasure trove and the cocktails in teapots are lethal. I also love Jive Party at the Rivoli ballroom - it’s an amazing venue with fantastic live band and you get a jive class at the beginning of the night!

Coffee or tea? Where? Coffee after school drop off in Cafe 41 on Brockley Rise - great coffee and very friendly staff. I also love St Davids. For tea and cake, Canvas and Cream or the cafe at the Horniman. Annabelle Dowler is an actress and voice over artist living in Forest Hill. Among other theatre, TV and film work Annabelle plays Kirsty in BBC Radio 4’s The Archers.

What brought you here? We’d been renting for years in Shepherds Bush and then Kilburn but wanted to buy and just couldn’t afford the prices there. I was doing a job and half the crew were based in South East London and said I should have a look at the area. As soon as I got out of the station at Forest Hill for our first flat viewing I got such a good feeling about the area and knew we’d be happy living here. That was over 7 years ago.

What has changed most during that time? Pubs being renovated. Nice independent cafes popping up. House prices getting crazily high.

What do you most value about the area? The community feel. We have lovely friends and neighbours on our street who we and our kids socialize with. Plus the fact that although we’re just off the South Circular which I hate, our garden is a peaceful, green oasis full of wildlife. 32 | SE23 - July 2018

Your favourite place to go for a drink? The choir I go to rotates for post singing drinks between The General Napier (The Nap), The Chandos and The Honor Oak. All very different in character! I also really like The Blythe Hill Tavern and Van Dough pizza is there on Thursdays and Fridays.

Where’s your favourite place to walk? The Horniman gardens. It’s what massively attracted me to the area in the first place and is so beautiful all year round.

When I want to relax…. I lie on my sun lounger staring at my garden and listening to the birds! I spend a lot of time rushing around the place and travel up and down to Birmingham to record The Archers, but when the sun’s out I’m capable of being incredibly lazy.

What is your favourite shop? Bunka. It’s my go to place for birthday presents and they have some lovely clothes in there too. @AnnabelleDowler
