Welcome to SE23 This Month

Welcome May turned out to be a great month. The weather was a bit hit and miss, but for the Dulwich Festival Fair, it was definitely a hit. At the time of writing, it was the hottest day of the year so far! Goose Green was packed with everyone having a great time. The donkey rides were as popular as ever. All the stallholders enjoyed it too. The weather stayed dry for both weekends of the Artist’s Open Houses, which were well supported again this year. Here’s to next year! Lawrence Roullier White has cocktails on his mind, see his special cocktail selection on our shopping page on 20. There is our usual Hectic Host (p12), food and drink (p14), children’s activities (p18 & 19), Councillor’s Column (p22) Horniman Museum listings (p24), financial matters (p26) and garden talk (p30), enjoy reading. We have six fabulous pages of local events, starting on page 8. SE23 is the only place to find out what is happening in the area. If you are running an event in the area, please do e-mail details through for a free listing. Remember that the events that miss our print deadline will be found at www.arounddulwich.co.uk as will many other stories.

See you next time!

Hectic Host

Outside Dining

W

ith summer almost upon us those of us that are lucky enough to have some outside space can think about moving the party outside. Many casual drinks parties are impromptu, taking advantage of some sudden sun or a chance visit, but you need to be able to offer your guests a bite to eat. I am always impressed how in France the host disappears for 10 minutes and reappears with trays of delicious snacks, Roullier White’s two French colleagues Stella Giugiu and Solène Falières share some secrets from the kitchens of French Hectic Hosts. Warm goat’s cheese with honey on toast. Take some bread, a day old bread is fine, lightly toast one side under the grill. Remove from grill and spread with creamy goat’s cheese, pop back under grill and cook under the cheese is melted, drizzle with honey and sprinkle with thyme or black pepper and serve. Basil tuna rillettes. Take a tin of very good quality tuna, drain the fish and flake with a fork into a bowl, add some cream cheese, a dash of paprika, a squeeze of lemon juice, salt and pepper and top with some torn bail leaves. Spoon into small ramekins or spread on char grilled toasted bread with aperitifs. Smoked salmon & ricotta toasts. Chop smoked salmon, this is ideal if you have some left over from brunch or breakfast and mix in a bowl with Ricotta, add some lemon juice and dill and work into a smooth paste. Spread on small toasted circles of French bread. Verrines are a very popular party dish across all of France, small portions are made in little glasses, and are left scattered for guests to pick up. Chop some endive and drop into the bottom of each vessel, peel and pith some orange and break into small chucks, saving any juice, place the orange on the endive and top with some crumbled goat’s cheese, mix the leftover juice with a dash of olive oil and pour over each pot. Serve with a tea spoon. Another super-easy version is a crab & pear verrine, chop some pear

12 | SE23 - June 2016

and mix with some flaked white crab meat, stir in some lime juice and a little some fresh herbs. You probably won’t need salt but do season with black pepper; although it is somewhat out of fashion in the UK and almost forgotten, white pepper works a treat with all types of shellfish. It has a slightly more aromatic and earthy quality that works with the saltiness of the fish. White pepper is a common ingredient in France when you do not want dark flecks to show in your sauces or dishes. It is used mainly in the kitchen rather than on the table as a condiment. Spoon into glasses and top of with a little more lime juice and a dash of olive oil. Soup de Champagne is a traditional punchlike drink that is served chilled in the summer. To a bottle of champagne – or fizzy wine – add a cup of Cointreau, a cup of squeezed lemon and a cup of squeezed orange juice and stir in sugar to taste.

Cleaning Agency Friends

Advertorial

Cleaning Agency Friends First Hour FREE OF CHARGE if you sign up for a regular cleaning In June or July What makes Cleaning Agency Friends different? We meet with our clients face to face to discuss their requirements and explain in details how the agency works before we start with any new client. Communication: we believe it is vital from both the clients and the cleaners. We never let issues build up – we act on them immediately Our clients and cleaners are our biggest assets, so we make sure we look after them! We deliver the best quality cleaning to the clients whilst offering job stability to the cleaners, all at reasonable price. We deal with all requests promptly. At our bricks and mortar office, our dedicated team of people listen and deal with the problems. Unfortunately accidents happen to the best of us, but we make sure that we find a solution to them and the fact that clients stay with us for years, prove that we do! Our clients are the decision makers: we are happy to offer holiday cover but you do not have to take this up. We like to appreciate people for spreading a good word about us by providing two hours of complimentary cleaning. Our clients love that!

How do you know your staff are good? We select our staff carefully through a word of mouth from our existing cleaners and this way we have completely eliminated any possible problems of dishonesty or theft. We know the cleaners’ background and where they live. We regularly inspect our staff performances by going to visit them at the clients houses to make sure that the standard is maintained on the high level.

What about cost? We have clear and transparent messages. There is no hidden costs. We let you know exactly what to pay and you know what we get and what your cleaner gets paid.

What we believe in We like to help out as we believe that staying 'Friends' in the best way forward! Our cleaners like to work together and are willing to help one another. We have frequently helped our clients when THEY have locked themselves out, often at out of office hours or at the weekend, and contacted us for a key from their cleaner. We always respond quickly to those type of emergencies. Apart from domestic cleaning we also do carpet cleaning with high quality products, gardening and maintenance, and handy man jobs. We believe in working with people who value quality and fairness. That makes Cleaning Agency Friends the best agency to approach.

Food & Drink with Suzanne James

Bouillabaisse Method

We will be serving this lovely Bouillabaisse at our June East Dulwich Supper Club, if in doubt ask your fishmonger for advice on the most seasonal fish to use.

1) Firstly, heat the oil in a large pan, add the fennel, celery and carrot and fry for until softened but not coloured. Add the chili and garlic and cook for two minutes until soft. 2) Add the spices and fry for two minutes until fragrant. Add the tomatoes, tomato purée, saffron, white wine and fish bones. Bring to the boil and then turn it down and let it simmer for roughly 1 hour. 3) Strain the stock through a fine sieve, pressing down firmly to extract some of the vegetables. Return the strained stock to the pan and keep warm until ready to serve. 4) Return the pan to the heat and bring to a simmer. Add the parsley, tarragon, prawns, fish and squid and cook gently for five minutes. Divide the cooked fish between four serving bowls and ladle the liquid over the top. 5) Should be served with Crotons and Rouille.

SE23 Councillors

Perry Vale Ward Assembly 12th May

A

t our latest assembly we were pleased to welcome over forty residents who had come to hear presentations from council officers and local residents covering environment initiatives. The meeting was held at the Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German Church, in Dacres Road. To add to the meeting’s environment theme, some residents had taken advantage of an earlier guided tour led by co-ordinating group member, Tim Lund of adjacent Dacres Wood Nature Reserve. As well as being informed about the reserve’s fauna and flora, Tim showed them the new bridge being constructed across the pond which will allow visitors to dip for pond wildlife. Voted on by residents as a bid they wished to support, the new bridge is funded by Perry Vale’s assembly fund. The “Let’s Talk Rubbish” presentation focussed on Lewisham Council’s new garden waste collection service. It is a subscription only service at £60 p.a. and will provide a brown garden waste wheelie bin to your property, with a weekly collection and you can choose to renew or end you subscription at year end. For further information or to sign up to the service visit www.lewisham.gov.uk/garden. When you receive the bin, write your door number on it and the service begins on Monday 6th June 2016. Fly-tipping is an enviro-crime that blights our city and Lewisham Council have up-graded their enviro-crime reporting tool LoveLewisham. The presentation described how this app enabled Lewisham Council’s Environment division to use technology to work smarter by making it easier for residents to report incidents and for officers to deal with them more quickly. It was something I was proud to promote both London and nationwide. Having brought development back in house, the new version Peer2Peer Focus integrates reporting with FixMyStreet, and there are freely available apps to employ. All the reports can go direct to officers’ devices to be dealt with and

22 | SE23 - June 2016

reduces bureaucracy and cost, especially in these times of financial constraint for the council Having suffered from fly-tipping for many years, despite the intervention of Perry Vale councillors to regularly get it removed, residents from Helvetia Street came up with the idea to erect gates across the one access to the fly-tipping hotspot. By consulting with their neighbours, they agreed to fund the gates and also received donations from Lewisham Homes and L+Q. The gates have resolved the fly-tipping problem and the enclosed space is now a safe communal play area for their children. We are very lucky to have many green spaces in Perry Vale and are always keen to create new ones. Local residents from Sunderland Road have identified an overgrown plot of vacant land area that can be transformed into another community garden for our ward. An interactive discussion “roots and shoots” took place at the meeting to come up with ideas to take forward. Neighbours and local organisations of the site will be consulted and support sought to make this happen. Finally, two excellent events in se23 for June; 1) Friends of the Horniman Art Exhibition held in the museum’s conservatory on the weekend of 4th and 5th June 2016. 2) Lark in the Park 2, Perry Vale’s ward assembly held in Mayow Park 12pm onwards Saturday 18th June 2016. Hope to see some of you at either or both.

Financial Matters

The Bank of Mum & Dad COMING TO A HIGH STREET NEAR YOU

W

ith property prices being so out of sync with wages, the property market would be dead if it wasn’t for the unsung heroes of the UK property market. Parents. Whilst the rest of Europe has always been comparatively lukewarm about property ownership, the UK continues to be obsessed; firmly believe that getting on the property ladder is key once a young person is earning. But with the average price of a decent first time buyer flat in South East London being north of £350,000, your average deposit on a flat together with incidentals such as stamp duty, solicitors and mortgage arrangement fees is going to be near enough £90,000, which most young people don’t have. Bring in Bank of Mum and Dad. Lending from parents to help their children get on the UK property ladder will amount to £5bn in 2016, according to data from Legal & General. This means that so-called Bank of Mum and Dad will help to finance 25% of all UK mortgage transactions this year - at an average amount of £17,500. This figure is much higher in London. If this lending prowess was combined into a formal business, Bank of Mum and Dad would be a top 10 UK mortgage lender, adds L&G. “In the old days, young people had to wait for their parents or grandparents to die before receiving their inheritance. But that didn’t matter so much. Back when a 2 bedroom flat was £150,000, you only needed a deposit of 5% to get a mortgage. If you had savings of £10,000, you were well on your way. With property prices and the corresponding deposit required being so much higher these days, there is far more pressure on parents to make financial gifts early, to help get their children on the property ladder,” says Sally.

When Daniel’s grandmother died unexpectedly and left him £30,000, his immediate priority was to use the money as a deposit on a property. With personal savings of £20,000, he was ready come up with his side of the bargain on a deposit for their first home. All he needed now was for Penny to pull her weight! “This put immense pressure on us as parents to find the money for Penny’s side of the deposit,” says Sally. “We had earmarked £30,000 for a loft conversion but we sacrificed our plans and gave the money to Penny. Under normal circumstances, we would have expected Penny to repay this debt, but because Daniel simply inherited his money, we didn’t feel it was fair to ask her to pay us back. We feel a little robbed, to be honest!” This trend seems set to gather pace in the next few years and shows no sign of abating. The corresponding pressure on parents is real and profound. Bank of Mum and Dad: it’s here to stay!

Garden Talk

June Gardening June is a busy time in the garden. Here’s how to keep on top of it all…

Watering and feeding… Give the garden a good soak once or twice a week in warm weather, concentrating on newly planted shrubs and trees. Containers can need watering daily when it’s hot. Water in the morning or evening and use ‘grey’ (wash water), a water butt and an irrigation system – much more efficient than a hose - where possible. Apply or renew a mulch of well-rotted manure to cut down on weeding and watering– ideally after a downpour, as mulch keeps water out, as well as in. Feed flowering pot plants weekly with liquid fertiliser and hungry plants like sweet peas and clematis a mid season boost of general purpose organic fertiliser such as blood fish and bone, and water in.

Pruning and tidying… Prune evergreen topiary and hedges. Trim about 5cm of new growth from box (buxus) with pruning shears. Prune spring flowering shrubs such as weigela, philadelphus and deciduous magnolias. Follow with a general purpose organic fertiliser and mulch. Deadhead spent flowers of plants like roses – it’ll really prolong the flowering period. Snip off browning heads with secateurs to a bud or leaf below. Cut hardy geraniums back with shears for a second flush and pick, pick, pick sweet peas to keep them coming (providing your house with a constant supply of fresh and beautifully scented flower). Pull out annual weeds by hand, or with a hoe, while they’re small. Dig out perennials like dandelions from lawns or beds –any roots left can regrow. Cut down dead foliage on bulbs - around six weeks after flowering and ideally when it’s gone yellow. Until then they should be watered and fed to prepare them for next year. Lift and divide iris clumps after flowering. Stake tall perennials like phlox and hollyhocks to avoid them collapsing or being battered by rain. I prefer using cherry sticks (for sale at Shannon’s Garden Centre) than bamboos as I feel they blend better , or look out 30 | SE23 - June 2016

for more ornamental supports such as the rusted iron ones (Alleyn Park Garden Centre stock a beautiful selection). Tie in climbing and rambling roses to avoid them becoming a mess - ideally horizontally to encourage more flowers. Prune back Clematis montana into its allotted space, as well as honeysuckle and other vigorous climbers.

And the rest… Look out for slugs and snails, particularly after rain, and around new shoots. Pick them off or use organic slug pellets or beer traps (jars of beer sunk into the soil to attract and drown slugs!). Squeeze off greenfly infestations with your fingers or squirt them with soapy water. Mow the lawn once or twice a week - the less grass taken off each time the healthier it’ll be. Raise the blades if it’s dry. Feed the lawn with a liquid or slow release fertiliser such as chicken manure pellets. Ensure newly laid grass doesn’t dry out. Plant out runner beans, courgettes, and tomatoes – which like a sunny wall and lots of water. Surround ripening strawberries with straw to keep them off the soil and protect fruit bushes with netting. Pick elderflowers if you have any in your garden , for a summery cordial, just perfect with your (well earned) G&T, trust me. Don’t forget to check out the NGS garden Festival and visit local gardens that open their doors for charity, a fabulous event. Barbara Samitier - Garden Designer www.barbarasamitiergardens.co.uk
