Welcome It is with much sadness that I let you know that Ingrid Beazley died just after I went to print last month. I know that many of you will know Ingrid as she was so active in the Dulwich area. Ingrid contacted me when I first started SE22 & SE23 to forge a relationship between the magazines and the Dulwich Picture Gallery. A relationship that is still going strong over 10 years later. I know that I am not the only one to have benefited from her ideas, support and kindness. Over the years we were in touch regarding the Friends’ of Dulwich Picture Gallery, The Bigger Picture film club (still going strong at EDT) and, of course, the Street Art. So it is with the Street Art in mind that I thought it fitting to re print the article launching Ingrid’s book, Street Art Fine Art, which I know she was incredibly proud of. See page 30. In June I usually reflect back on what a wonderful Dulwich Festival we had, which of course we did. It just reminds me of some of the wonderful Private Views, Ingrid and Tom hosted so generously at their house, on the eve of the Artists’ Open House weekend. I know that many people will miss Ingrid; her family and her many dear friends in the area and around the World. We were very lucky to have her so near. See you next month

Street Art Fine Art
The street art that has appeared in and around Dulwich in the last year is almost all based on old master paintings in the permanent collection at Dulwich Picture Gallery.

A new book by Ingrid Beazley, who organised their execution, draws parallels between classic and contemporary styles, showing how works by painters such as Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Rubens, Tiepolo, Murillo and Van Dyke have influenced works by today’s most cutting edge street artists such as Stik, ROA, Thierry Noir, RUN, Phlegm, Pablo Delgado, Conor Harrington and MadC. Including stunning photography of the process and comments from the artists and the public.

Ingrid Beazley, former Chairman of the Friends of Dulwich Picture Gallery, and founder of the Dulwich Outdoor Gallery, died last month. This article was first published in April 2014 to celebrate the launch of Ingrid’s book. It felt fitting to republish it to show the lasting effect of Ingrid’s passion for art. Ingrid will be missed by so many of us in Dulwich and beyond. A celebration of her life will be held next month at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. My thoughts are with Tom, Kim, Bea and family. 30 | SE23 - June 2017

The Great Wall of Stillness!
T
he Reception Team had been researching ideas for the outside space and wanted to make something bright and colourful for the children. The area is an extension of the classroom and as such any images needed to complement the curriculum clearly defining each learning space. We decided to create individual panels that would provide backdrops for the topics covered throughout the year. A rainbow scene for ‘Once upon a Tale’ a unit that covers traditional fairy tales, a map of the World for our unit on travel ‘On the Move’ treasure maps and landscapes of London for role play, etc which was 48 meres in length. We had a limited budget to work with so wanted to be able to spend as much of the money we had on equipment, costumes and learning resources for the children. Brock, father of Olive in Red class offered to help and organised with two other Dads, Neil and Lawrence to paint the scenes on the wall for us. Before the walls could be painted they needed to be treated with stabilising paint. Costing up the treatment and

paint we looked at sourcing through community paint initiatives when Brock approached Whites Suppliers who kindly gave their assistance with discounted materials. Over the next six months the team came in to school each Saturday and Sunday to complete the walls. They also worked throughout the half terms managing to complete everything ready for the start of the Summer Term. As a school we are completely reliant on parental contributions for things of this nature. We are delighted with the end result as it has not just impacted on the Reception children but also the nursery who see the walls from their classroom and the staff who look out from the staffroom on to the walls. We are very grateful for the effort that the team have put in and the generosity of Whites which, combined, made this project possible. www.stillness-inf.lewisham.sch.uk

Crab Recipes Crab & Lemon Linguine Crab is absolutely at its best from May until November so now is the time to try this wonderful recipe. If you don't have linguini it also works well with spaghetti or fettuccine. Instead of crab meat you can use peeled, cooked prawns. Serves 4 Preparation time 10 minutes Cooking time 10 minutes
Ingredients • 400g (13oz) linguini • 400g (13oz) dressed white crab meat • 1 long red chilli, finely sliced • 1 clove garlic, crushed • Grated zest of 1 lemon • 2 tbsp Filippo Berio Extra Virgin olive oil • 2 tbsp torn chervil leaves • Juice of half a lemon
Method 1) Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil. Add the pasta to the pan, stir well and boil rapidly for around 8-10 minutes, or until al dente. 2) Meanwhile, combine the dressed crabmeat, chilli, crushed garlic and lemon zest in a bowl. Stir the extra virgin olive oil into the mixture, and season well with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Mix well with a fork to flake the crab meat. 3) Drain the cooked pasta and return it to the saucepan. Add the crab mixture, chervil leaves and lemon juice, and stir well to combine. 4) Drizzle with a little extra olive oil if desired. Taste and add extra lemon juice if you think it needs it. Serve immediately.

Financial Matters
If I Was A Better Adviser
I
met up recently for coffee with a financial adviser I used to work with. I noticed that he wasn’t his usual happy self. I asked him what was wrong and this was his story: “James, who was in his early thirties, called me a couple of months ago wanting pensions advice. He had to decide about an ex employer’s pension or risk losing his fund. During the meeting, I discovered that he had two young children and a wife who worked part time as a dance teacher. She wasn’t earning much. “He had a significant mortgage and a small personal loan but no life insurance. Nothing to cover the mortgage and nothing to cover any shortfall in income for his family on his death. It was clear that if he died, his family would be in big financial trouble. He was healthy and young, and therefore unlikely to die, yet I knew from my training that his need for insurance was urgent. “I mentioned this to him, but his focus was to sort out his pension. He did however agree that I could send him a quote in the post. I sent him two life insurance illustrations. One joint policy to cover his mortgage of £330,000 and another to leave the family with an income of £40,000 a year on either death until the children were aged 21. “At the next meeting, we had a lengthy meeting to sort out his pension. At the end of it, I asked him whether he had received the life insurance quote. He said yes he had, but hadn’t had a chance to look at it properly or discuss it with his wife. He did say that he would do so and come back to me. A better adviser would have gone through it with him there and then and persuaded him to sign the paperwork first. Then go home and discuss with wife. But I didn’t. We’d had a lengthy meeting already and he looked tired. I therefore weakly allowed him to go home uninsured. “A better adviser would have called him after that and badgered him into taking out the
life insurance. But I didn’t. It was coming up to tax-year end and I had many clients who wanted to sort out their ISA’s and pensions. I was busy. If I’m honest, I wasn’t too busy to call him but I hoped that he would call me. He never did. “Instead, I received a call from his wife Sally. She said that fit and healthy James had collapsed and died three weeks previously whilst playing his usual weekend five a side football. My whole body turned cold and I felt the ground shift as I realised where this was conversation was heading. Sally had found my business card and the life insurance quotes whilst sorting out his papers. She just wanted to make sure that he had set up the cover and needed to know what she needed to do to claim. She sounded confident at first. When I was silent, she asked, “He is covered, isn’t he?” That’s when I had to say the most disappointing two letter word ever. “No.” She hung up on me. The echo of the phone dying in my hand will stay with me forever. I imagined her sobs of anguish. Call her back? And say what? “I can only imagine what Sally and her kids are going through now. A better adviser would have used all the tricks in the book to make sure he got insured. This would have made all the difference to their lives. But didn’t. Instead, I failed them. Initially, I was so distraught that I considered leaving the business, giving up on my profession. Instead, I let this tragedy motivate me. I have a different attitude now. When it comes to life insurance, I am like a Rottweiler. If you have a family or dependants, you’re just not going home without it, simple as that.” Special thanks to Warren Powell for letting me tell his story.

Garden Talk
Eight ways to go organic in the garden It’s easy to panic and reach for a chemical spray at the first sight of greenfly or diseased plants. But there’s a more natural way. Here’s how:
infected leaves and destroy them – sterilising your secateurs afterwards. And a spray of 30% milk to water makes a good alternative to fungicide.
1) Encourage Wildlife
6) Ward Off Slugs And Snails
Instead of using pesticides that will harm all insects good and bad – lure in the beneficial ones. Ladybirds and hoverfly larvae will eat aphids – they like chives, fennel and cosmos, or invest in a bug hotel. Ground beetles eat slugs. Birds will help keep down snails as will frogs. Try a birdbath, feeder or berries for birds and a little pond for frogs.
2) Keep Weeds Down Naturally Weeds carry disease, and steal light, water and nutrients from your plants. A thick mulch of bark or well rotten manure will keep them at bay, as will pulling them out as young seedlings.
3) Patrol To Keep Control Aphids like the new tender growth of plants like clematis and rose buds, so keep an eye out for them - they can make leaves curl up. Squish them off by hand, or use a strong spritz of water. Or try soapy water made with Dr Bronner’s liquid soap or garlic sprays (see permaculture.com for recipe). After it’s rained, inspect any favourite, or young tender plants for slugs - pick them off and drown them! Also look out for plant diseases such as rose black spot, and prune any affected bits of the plant before it spreads.
4) Improve Your Soil Good soil is the key to plants that are less likely to be affected by pests and diseases. Adding compost or manure, will improve drainage of heavy soils and allow dry soils to hold moisture and nutrients – it’ll also encourage earthworms, which help create a good soil structure.
A great organic solution to slugs is nematodes, such as Nemaslug, that you pour onto the soil killing slugs above and below ground. Organic wool pellets that expand into a rough mat are another option as is crushed eggshell or gravel which slugs find hard to slither over. Or leave a half buried jar of beer near strawberries (you can buy commercial beer traps) or surround plants with copper rings that give slugs a little electric shock!
7) Fertilise Naturally Instead of quick fix chemical fertilisers, using organic fertilisers such as blood fish & bone, chicken pellets or seaweed will nourish the soil as well as the plant. Bio char and rock dust are good. See organiccatalogue.com for some great organic tomato and rose feeds.
8) Finally, Water Well The right amount of water stops plants becoming vulnerable to diseases. In warm weather a really good soaking once a week should be enough. Equally, be aware of waterlogging plants, especially those in pots as that can encourage spotting and other problems – if in doubt poke your finger into the soil and see how it feels. Even adopting just a few of the above ideas will help. Happy healthy gardening, Janine
5) Give Your Plants Breathing Space! One of the best ways to avoid powdery mildew – a white powdery disease on leaves is not to overcrowd plants. If you do spot the signs, cut off 28 | SE23 - June 2017

In Remembrance of Ingrid Beazley
Street Art Fine Art
The street art that has appeared in and around Dulwich in the last year is almost all based on old master paintings in the permanent collection at Dulwich Picture Gallery.
Left: Tiepolo – Joseph receiving Pharaoh’s Ring 1755. Below: Thierry Noir – Joseph receiving Pharaoh’s Ring 2013

The Last Word
Rob Cassie My name is Rob Cassie, I’m a qualified electrician who works mainly in the domestic sector. I’m registered with a governing body that makes sure that I work to current standards as set out by the wiring regulations. My aim is to make sure that homeowners are electrically safe in their own home. How long have you lived in the area? I’ve lived in the SE area for just over twenty years.
What brought you here? My now wife, girlfriend at the time, lived in the area so I moved to the area so we could see more of each other.
Coffee or tea? Where? Coffee first thing on a weekend, tea during the rest of the week. Being a tradesman I am always working in other people’s homes and I get offered a variety of different versions of tea, from very milky to very strong to even sometimes the very exotic.
The best meal I’ve ever had..
Many years ago, at a military event, I met Prince Charles. I remember thinking how much shorter he was in real life, for some reason I always thought he was very tall.
This is an easy one to remember because it was on my honeymoon in Cyprus, we went to a restaurant called Mama’s and had a Meze, it was never ending, plate after plate of food came out, I’m not sure if it was because they realized we were on honeymoon, but I do remember asking the waiter and he said that there were 28 different items of food that were brought to the table and we were in the restaurant for around three and a half hours. We were rather bloated to say the least.
Do you belong to any groups?
The book I’m reading at the moment..
I belong to a group called “My Electricians Toolbox”, which is for likeminded electricians who meet up and discuss marketing for their electrical businesses and how to grow it even further and we also have annual events where we all meet up. Having been a member since the group was founded I am now part of the admin team that helps out at events and with other activities for the members.
Unshakeable by Tony Robbins.
The one thing you couldn’t do without? My iPad, it keeps me connected with my customers and has my daily schedule at hand.
The most famous person you’ve met?
Describe your perfect weekend? Relaxing at home, I like to paint using oil paints. My father was a great artist and used to exhibit his work in London. Although I’ve always liked drawing using pencils and pastels, I’ve only been painting using oils for just over three years. It was a great feeling recently, having sold my first painting.
Where are you to be found on a Saturday? On the sofa enjoying a quiet night in. 32 | SE23 - June 2017
My perfect holiday.. Cyprus without a doubt. I have been back many times since our honeymoon, I fell in love with the place from the moment I saw it.
My secret ambition.. I have many, but two of them would be, first to have a home in Scotland as that’s where my inlaws live and it is such a peaceful village, it’s nice to get away there for some rest and recuperation. Secondly would be to have a holiday home in Cyprus, knowing you could just get on a plane and be in such a beautiful place with great whether, great food and have a nice relaxing break whenever you felt like it. www.rjc-electrics.co.uk
