The Last Word – Lol Johnson Do you know your neighbours? Yes - I live on an estate of 60’s houses, which seem to attract like-minded people, so I have lots of lovely creative neighbours. It can actually be a bit of a hazard if you’re trying to leave the house in a hurry - I almost always end up bumping into someone the minute I leave the house! But I love that sense of community - it can be a rare thing in London.
Describe your perfect weekend I think we’ve perfected the easily attainable perfect weekend in our house, and manage it on a regular basis. Jump on the train into Town for a sneaky lunch/shop with the other half whilst the kids are at clubs on a Saturday, followed by early evening G&T’s listening to Craig Charles on Radio 6. Then a lazy Sunday - a stroll through the woods or a trip to a gallery (for some inspiration), then back home for a family roast in front of the fire… I’m quite easily pleased!
Where is your favourite place to eat? You can’t beat The Begging Bowl in Peckham - it’s a real local gem.
Where’s your favourite place to walk? Lol Johnson is a local professional photographer whose work mainly revolves around interiors and kids. When not busy artily draping a throw, or coaxing kids into throwing a pose, she can be found out and about with her husband and kids or jogging around the local parks.
How long have you lived in the area? I’ve been a South Londoner ever since I made the move from my hometown of Newcastle in 1996, but made the move to Forest Hill just before the birth of my first child in 2006. It was the only place we could afford to buy a property! It’s not quite so affordable now.
What has changed most during that time? Property prices! And transport links - the East London Line makes central London much more accessible, but the best thing about Forest Hill is one of it’s oldest institutions - The Horniman Museum and I’m lucky enough to live right on it’s doorstep. Unfortunately, that happens to be on the South Circular, if I could change anything - I’d build a bypass!
I grew up on the North east coast, so I’m always hankering after a stroll along the beach… failing that Dulwich/Sydenham woods are a pretty good alternative, although they can get a bit busy at weekends!
When I want to relax… I run a nice hot bath, grab a book and lock the bathroom door - I can easily while away an hour.
Best bargain you’ve ever landed… When we bought our house, the owner offered us our pick of the furniture, as it was her Mothers who had sadly passed away. We bagged ourselves a whole set of Ladderax shelving and a fantastic G Plan dining set - I reckon they’d been there since the house was built and they fit the style of the property perfectly.
My secret ambition… To run a B&B on a rugged cliffside. You can view a selection of Lol’s work on her website www.loljohnson.com or keep up-todate with the most recent work on Instagram @loljohnsonphotography

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer
How Sleep Affects Weight Loss This is one of the most popular questions about sleep that is asked on Google, which is interesting as I think it’s an under-appreciated aspect of weight loss. The fact is, sleep plays a major role in fat loss (and in muscle gain as well). Sleep is a critical factor for almost every aspect of our health. So how can a lack of sleep affect weight loss? There are three major implications to a lack of quality sleep – and they’re all linked to hormones.
Ghrelin Ghrelin is a hormone that regulates our appetite – its nickname is the hunger hormone. Ghrelin tells our brain that we’re hungry, and when it’s working well, we can rely on it to steer us towards food when we need it. It’s like following your intuition – you’ll know what to eat and when to eat. When you’re sleep deprived, there can be too much ghrelin in your system, causing feelings of hunger. This makes you far more likely to overeat and gain weight.
Leptin Leptin is a hormone that regulates satiety – leptin tells the brain when we’re full. When we’re sleep deprived, we can end up with too little leptin in our bodies, which makes your brain think you need energy, and creates feelings of hunger. This can cause you to overeat and more likely to crave glucose-rich foods such as refined carbohydrates.
The Perfect Storm When you combine these two factors – increased ghrelin and decreased leptin levels – you have a perfect storm for weight gain or hindered weight loss. Add into this that when you’re tired, you lack motivation to exercise or cook healthy foods, it’s clear to see the influence that sleep has on weight loss.

for functions such as regulating metabolism and contributing to your immune response. Cortisol levels should be highest in the morning and come down as the day progresses and hit their lowest point before bedtime. When you’re sleep-deprived, cortisol levels go up, and this increases blood glucose (sugar) levels. Whilst this isn’t ideal, it’s not a huge issue if it’s intermittent or infrequent, because your pancreas will produce insulin to ‘mop up’ the glucose and transport it to the muscles, liver and fat cells. The problem is sleep deprivation can reduce your insulin sensitivity, which means your blood glucose could be elevated. This is a scenario you want to avoid and can cause unstable energy levels.
Main Takeaway Sleep is essential for good health, and this includes weight management. If you’re looking to lose weight, review your sleep routine first.
Cortisol The other hormone that plays a role in tiredness and sleep deprivation is cortisol. Cortisol is the stress hormone, which is an important hormone 12 | SE23 - March 2018

Food & Drink with Suzanne James
Courgette Spaghetti
For the spinach & basil pesto • 150g Baby spinach • 30g basil leaves • 1 garlic clove, finely grated • 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil To finish • A small handful of fresh basil leaves • 2 tsp grated parmesan
Method 1) For the pesto, put all the ingredients into a jug blender or food processor, add some salt and pepper and blitz until smooth. 2) Put the spiralised courgettes into a bowl and sprinkle generously with salt. Mix well with your hands, then leave to stand and wilt for 20 minutes. Drain in a colander, patting the courgette firmly with kitchen paper to remove all excess water and salt. 3) Tip the spiralised courgettes into a large pan and add the pesto and “cream”. Stir well to coat with the sauce and cook over a medium heat for 2 minutes, then fold through the sundried tomatoes. 4) Divide the courgetti between warmed bowls and sprinkle with the fresh basil leaves, parmesan and pine nuts. More and more people are changing their diets, eating less meat and even becoming vegetarians or vegans. There is no doubt that there are health benefits but it does take time and research to make sure you still follow a balanced diet. Over the past two months I have been trying to stick to a pescetarian diet, and I have now given up meat for lent so please help me! Some days are easier than others, but I have been surprised by how much I am enjoying it, and I am definitely getting more creative with my recipes. We will be serving Courgette “Spaghetti” as a starter at our March Supper Club, and it is definitely one of my favourite veggie options so far (though maybe not the healthiest due to the double cream – I will keep working on that!). Serves 2.
Ingredients • 50g Sundried Tomatoes • Olive oil spray • 1 tsp dried oregano • 500g large wonky courgettes, spiraliser to resemble spaghetti (or use a peeler to create fine strips if you don’t have a spiraliser) • 2 tbsp double cream 14 | SE23 - March 2018

Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw
In Praise Of Cherry Blossom There’s nothing prettier than pink cherry blossom against a clear blue sky – a sign winter is behind us and spring is here. Here are 10 of the best:
Pale pink Prunus ‘Pink Shell’ A small, elegant tree with spreading branches and delicate single, pale pink flowers – a lovely contrast to the light green leaves. This is one of the prettiest cherries and widely available. 4m. Prunus ‘Kojo-no-mai’ A compact cherry tree/shrub - with delicate very pale pink flowers and wonderful autumn foliage. Ideal for containers. 2.5m Prunus ‘Accolade’ A graceful spreading tree with a cloud of large pastel pink semi-double flowers in April/May. It also has smooth reddish brown bark and fiery orange foliage in autumn. Height 6/7m.
Brighter pink Prunus ‘Kursar’ A small tree with clusters of dramatic deep pink single blooms in March to April. It has a neat upright habit and the new bronze foliage turns green then red/gold in autumn. 3/4m Prunus ‘Okame’ A lovely tree with masses of single candy floss pink flowers in March/early April and orangey red autumn foliage. 4m Prunus ‘Pink Perfection’ An elegant spreading cherry with masses of frilly double, bright pink flowers from April to May. Delicate bronze coloured leaves when young turn green then orange in autumn. 5m
Whites Prunus ‘Shogetsu’ Considered one of the finest Japanese cherries with pale pink flowers April/ May quickly fading to clouds of white blossom. It has lovely orange/red leaves in autumn. 4m Prunus ‘The Bride’ This is a dinky tree with a rounded shape, covered in large single white flowers with dark red centres in spring. Ideal for growing in a container or border. 2m 22 | SE23 - March 2018
Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’ Unlike the others here, the tiny white flowers of this tree are now getting to the end of their season having flowered from October. A stunning tree for winter, lovely underplanted with winter flowering Cyclamen hederofolium. 8m Prunus serrula This gets bigger than the others here but it’s lovely as a multi-stem, which tend to stay smaller. It has small white flowers in April but is grown more for the polished coppery bark that shines out in the winter. Its leaves turn a lovely yellow in autumn. 10m
Companions Cherries look great underplanted with a mass of Crocus tommasinnianus or Cyclamen coum. Helebores also look great interplanted with low growing ferns or try Epimedium x youngianum ‘Niveum’ – a fab semi evergreen ground cover plant with delicate white flowers in spring.
Care Cherries tolerate semi-shade, but they do best in the sun, in well drained soil. Any pruning such as removing dead, diseased damaged or crossing branches needs to be done in the summer to avoiding diseases. When planting, incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake. Janine Winlaw - Writer & Gardener Follow me on instagram @janinewinlaw

Financial Matters with Akwasi Duodu
Fortune Favours The Brave
I
hate the word CRASH. But for the purposes of the headline above, let’s call this fall in the stock market a correction. This month, the FTSE 100 share index fell by almost 10%, the US stock markets were all down heavily as was almost every stock market across the world. The press loved it. Nothing sells papers quicker than alarming and negative headlines. How about this: “Financial Meltdown!” “Billions wiped off shares across the world!” And so on. We see these headlines and our immediate instinct is, “Ooh, I must read about that.” And like sheep, we buy the newspaper. But what do you do when the stock market drops heavily? How should you react when you go online to look at your ISA or pension statement and its value has fallen by 10% or more? Here are three options:
1) Panic & sell everything immediately… …or move all your stocks into Cash. As you would imagine, I’m not a great fan of either strategy, but they do have one positive. You won’t lose any more money. If the market continues to fall, you’re safe. There is however one small problem. First of all, can you pull your money out quickly enough before the markets hit the bottom? Even if you manage to do so, when markets crash heavily, they tend to bounce back pretty quickly. In many instances in the past, the momentum of the bounce back has continued beyond the point of the initial fall. This causes a bull market (an expression used where markets power ahead like a charging bull). Anyone who had sold everything or moved their money into cash would be “outside the market” meaning they would not participate in the bull market, thereby crystallising their losses. By the time they got back in, they would have missed the boat.
2) Keep calm and do nothing…. …leaving everything as is. It might sound lazy but doing this takes some guts and faith that markets
24 | SE23 - March 2018
will return to normal. History suggests that they usually do. The biggest market corrections have always been followed by a strong rally. Black Monday 1987, the Dot Com Crash in 2000, 11 September 2001 and most recently, the Credit Crunch in 2008. Markets tend to take weeks to fall and months or years to recover. But by sitting tight, staying calm and doing nothing, you get to participate in the rally as and when it comes. History has shown there to be rally after every market correction there has ever been, however with stocks and shares, there are no guarantees.
3) Buy like it’s going out of style…. …investing any spare cash in the markets. We all understand property. Ask yourself this: When would have been the best time to invest in property? You may think back to 1991, when interest rates were at an all-time high, when almost every house in London was For Sale, when interest rates hit 15%, when words like “negative equity” and “handing back the keys” and “repossessed” was on everyone’s lips. Hindsight is a great thing, but if you’d had the money at the time, and a crystal ball, you would have bought everything you could get your hands on. The stock market is no different. Most investors tend to get on the bandwagon during a bull market. However, the best time to jump on the bus is after a crash – or should I say market correction? It takes a special type of investor to do that. What type of investor are you?

Set in a South American backwater, the four are hired to drive unstable nitro-glycerine in unrefrigerated trucks across impossible roads.
32 | SE23 - March 2018
