Welcome to SE23 I love this time of the year when the nights start getting a little bit lighter and Spring is very much in the air. This month those of us who are lucky will celebrate Mother’s Day on the 10th. Remember the clocks go forward on Sunday 31st. As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Dulwich. The events pages start on page 6. March is proving to be a busy month for events, so we have a fantastic eight pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. What's On - March Saturday 2 March: Design and Handprint onto Fabric
2pm - 5pm. Fabric Printing for Beginners. Spend three hours in Bell House’s newly-opened vintage print and bindery getting to know our historic 1860 Albion printing press and using it to explore designing and hand printing designs onto a variety of fabric samples. In addition to our old presses, we have a number of Indian woodblocks to play with and we will also get out some amazing and HUGE 100-year-old wallpaper blocks to ink up. After you have mastered the basics, we can help you delve into our ENORMOUS archive of wooden typefaces, illustration blocks and weird and wonderful shapes to start designing AND printing a tote bag, a gift bag or two and maybe even some vintage linen bunting to take home. This new workshop was designed and taught by local print enthusiasts Simon Trewin from The Garage Press and Tania Hurt-Newton of Pottingshed Press. he business end of the season is just round the corner and as we hurtle madly into March, Spring brings plenty of chances to cheer on your Hamlet sides, home and away. As things warm up on all fronts, first up it’s a trip down memory lane with an away fixture back at Imperial Fields, our temporary home for the bitter exile of 2018. The Men’s team face Kingstonian there on Saturday 2nd March. After that there are back to back home games at Champion Hill to enjoy: against Whitehawk on Saturday 9th and Lewes on Saturday 16th; before buckets and spades down at Bognor for the away jaunt to Bognor Regis Town on Saturday 23rd, as Spring finally arrives. The men’s month ends with the Easter weekend double of the visit of Billericay Town to Dulwich on Saturday 30th, before an away trip to our friends at Carshalton Athletic on Easter Monday, April 1st for all you pink ‘n’ blue Fools. Meanwhile, early in the month, our Women’s first team has a huge date in the diary with the visit of Dartford to Champion Hill for the semi-final of the League Cup. Dulwich recently went ding-dong with Dartford in a top of the table clash which finished with a brilliant 5-2 win, so hopes are high for the

same result and the chance to lift silverware this season. Gather at the Hill on Sunday 3rd March to join the Pepper Army in cheering The Hamlet into the final. After that there’s an away trip for the women to Ashford United on Sunday 10th, before two more home games in the league this month, against Aylesford on Sunday 17th and Sutton United on Sunday 24th. And to compete the March matches our Women’s Reserves take on Richmond Park on Sunday 10th and Whyteleafe on Sunday 17th at St Olave’s and St Saviour’s Sports Ground. Women’s Sunday fixtures tend to kick off at 2pm and men’s Saturday games at 3pm, but do check the club website or social media channels for all the latest news, including any changes or additional match action. A
lthough there may still be frosts and cold snaps to come, on a sunny clear day, it does feel like spring is on its way. If you didn’t get round to planting spring bulbs, or you’re waiting patiently for your daffodils to pop up, why not inject a little spring cheer into your garden by planting up containers with pretty seasonal gems. You’ll find lots to tempt you at your local garden centre such as chionodoxa, Iris reticulata, crocus varieties, muscari in white, pale and dark blue and stunning Fritillaria meleagris. Primroses, such as the delicate pale yellow native Primula vulgaris, or polyanthus planted in pots will bring spring right up to near the house. Alpines such as saxifrage look pretty too in a window box or in small pots on the window ledge. In terms of colour, blue, purple and yellow such as Narcissus‘Tete a Tete’ are a classic spring

combination. White is also pretty at this time of year and goes with anything, especially fresh green. Otherwise, harmonise colours such as pinks, purples and blues or limit yourself to three colours such as Add Ferns for foliage as well as plants such as bergenia which are useful for both foliage and flowers at this time of year. Camelias with their evergreen waxy leaves and showy flowers in whites, pinks or reds are wonderful for pots in the shade, adding evergreen structure as well as colour at this time of year. Viola are also lovely spring doers and come in a myriad of colours. Grouping a cluster of pots together can be particularly effective. And if possible, plant en masse with one or several varieties. The great thing about pots is that you can change them every year and move them around to create different effects and combinations - ideally all visible from the house so that you can see these gorgeous early blooms from the window.

ast month we looked at the importance of scent and its role in pet housetraining issues. This time I want to address how our recognition of the dog’s ‘smelloverse’ can be a window not only into canine motivations but also a means to address welfare and behaviour issues. It might be said that a dog ‘sees’ through its nose. Humans are primarily a sound and vision species; we rationalise our environment using eyes and ears. Dogs recognise each other primarily via a signature scent and use smell to both signpost and interpret the world around them. Dogs have 300 million olfactory receptors to our 6 million. They have a specialist scent analysis organ in the roof of the mouth and use tail wags to broadcast personal scent information from their anal glands. This is why dogs that go blind or deaf often adjust quite well, because they can still make sense of the world through smell. Our forefathers used dogs to hunt, using that incredible scenting ability to find anything from truffles to an escaped convict. Today we still use dogs to locate missing people, for customs and excise work and for bomb detection. At Medical Detection Dogs in Milton Keynes, dogs are employed to sniff out human cancers and to train as diabetes and allergen alert dogs. They can discern minute odour traces created by disease or changes in the environment, down to around one part per trillion (the equivalent of one teaspoon of sugar in two Olympic sized swimming pools). While a small population of working dogs are encouraged to use their sense of smell many pet dogs are actively discouraged, often to their detriment. Understandably owners do not want their pet shoving a nose into the crotch of a visitor or lingering too long at the pile of fox poo in the park. However, harnessing the dog’s nose in the right way can really add value to walks and general quality of life. A simple way to begin is to teach your dog a basic ‘find’ exercise. Here is how: 1) Start with a handful of tasty, smelly, treats. Toss one to your left, point and say “find”! Then toss one to your other side and cue. Repeat six times. 2) Get your dog to sit and wait or have someone hold his lead or tether him. Walk 6 to 10 feet away and let him see you place a treat on the floor. Walk

back to his side, pause, and point saying “find” and release him to go and get the treat. Repeat 6 times, unhooking the lead each time to let him go to the treat. 3) Next, have your dog sit and wait, or tether him and place the treat further away. Walk back to his side, pause, and cue him to find the treat. Repeat 6 times. 4) Again, have your dog sit and wait. This time hide several treats in easy places while he is watching. Return to his side, pause, and cue him to find. Do not help if he does not find them right away. You can move closer to the treats and point, but do not show him exactly where they are; you want him to do the work. Repeat 6 times. 5) Now hide the treats one at a time further away and in more difficult places: behind a chair leg or surfaces off the ground. Help your dog by pointing or moving closer to the hiding place, if necessary. 6) Finally, put him in another room while you hide treats. Bring him back in and cue him. Now you can begin to use ‘find’ to exercise your dog inside or outside. You will be amazed how tired your dog is after some nose work.

The Importance of Helping Others for Our Own Wellbeing
W
hen we talk about health and wellbeing, the first few things that spring to people’s minds are diet and exercise. Of course, those are very important aspects of health and wellbeing but over the years I have come to realise that social relationships, particularly in the age of AI, are more important than ever. In fact, I believe they are the next frontier of wellbeing. So, in this month article I wanted to share a story with you and who doesn’t love a story?! It is about the importance of helping others for our own wellbeing. Margaret Mead was an anthropologist. And she was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilisation. Her answer surprised everyone…
The First Sign of Civilisation Mead said the first sign of civilisation is a healed human femur bone. Quick anatomy lesson: that is the big bone that runs from hip to knee. But why would something like this be so significant? Well, ordinarily, whether you are a human or other animal, a broken bone is a death sentence out in the wild. You can’t find water. You can’t hunt for food. And you certainly can’t run away from predators! So normally, that would be game over— and probably a slow death, too. But according to Mead, the discovery of this healed human femur means quite the opposite. In fact, it tells us that at some point, humans started looking after each other and working together. We began helping others. That bone was healed because someone took care of that injured person.
Why Is Helping Others So Important? So, Margaret Mead deemed that to be, in her opinion, the first sign of human civilisation. And here’s why I think it’s an interesting point: We are coming, I would say, to another crunch point. 16 | SE23 - March 2024
We’re in a digital age, AI is starting to dominate our lives, and we don’t really know the direction that’s headed. But something we can control is our connectedness. We only have to look at the health implications of loneliness for proof that social relationships are just as essential as a good diet or exercise. The US Surgeon General equated the lack of social connections to smoking 15 cigarettes a day!* So, we know the effectiveness of belonging, and how powerful it is when we look after each other. And that’s why helping others is so important for our own wellbeing.
Think Femur That bone was discovered around 15,000 years ago. What it tells us is that what mattered then matters just as much now—especially as digitalisation and artificial intelligence really start to take hold. So I want to encourage you to keep sight of the importance of human relationships and helping others. Because that, I think, is going to make us happy, healthy, more resilient, and ultimately continue to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Think femur. *The Lancet, July 08, 2023

Baby Boomers & Public Services As it moves through the decades, the baby boomer bulge, creates big pressure on public sector services. Now aged between late 50s and late 70s, the boomers together number about 14 million people. As they join the pensioner ranks they become increasingly dependent on public services, especially the NHS and social care. They are also registering a flood of Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPoA).
Delays at the Office of Public Guardian LPoAs are handled by the Office of Public Guardian (OPG) and the OPG is struggling to cope. There are two types of LPoAs: one for finance and one for health & welfare. Each form is 20 pages and when sent off to be registered, goes with another form which is 6 more pages. The OPG has to handle around 90,000 applications a month. Incredibly, in the world of paperless offices, they handle around 19 million sheets of paper a year! All hard copy applications have to be scanned, checked and registered. Once filed, the turnaround time is currently around 20 weeks. The forms need to be completed very carefully as any errors or omissions will result in the forms being rejected. The poor applicant forfeits the fees (£82 per form) and has to start all over again! 26 | SE23 - March 2024
Why You Need LPoAs Now Despite this hassle and delay everyone (young and old) should complete and register both LPoAs. Hopefully the attorneys will never needed, but these forms (both health and finance) are arguably the most important legal documents you will ever sign. Each year there are many heartbreaking stories in the papers where next of kin (who without the LPoA for health) are staggered to learn they have no legal standing as regards the treatment and care for their loved ones. During Covid you will recall the shocking story of a grand daughter arrested for “rescuing” her grandmother from a care home. Your Mum or Dad may tell you they do not want to go to a care home, but if they lose mental capacity with no appointed attorney, any decision regarding their health and welfare will be made by the “health professionals” acting in what they determine to be the best interests of your Mum or Dad. Similarly with no LPoA in place for finance, anyone who loses mental capacity, will have no access to their money until a deputy is appointed in the Court of Protection – a long and expensive process. Statistically by the time we reach 85, fifty per cent of us will be living with some form of dementia. Accidents, early onset dementia and other medical conditions also occur causing a loss of mental capacity. For you own sake and the sake of your loved ones don’t put off filing your LPoAs – it may save a tragedy becoming a disaster.

Volunteer Drivers Needed
F
or 30 years, Link Age Southwark has eased loneliness and reduced social isolation for local older people and those living with a diagnosis of dementia. Today, they urgently need more volunteer drivers like Mark. Every Thursday, he collects four older women, from very different backgrounds, driving them to and from singing sessions run by the charity. “I enjoy listening to them chat when I’m driving them. Hearing about their lives and families is fascinating – they may have limited mobility now, but one of them told me that at 18 she’d been a long jump champion! They seem to really appreciate the interaction – they’ll ask about my sons, my dogs – it’s lovely to just be me. I retired last year from a very highpressure career where I was constantly ‘on call’. I wanted to explore other aspects of what I can bring to the world. Link Age Southwark needed drivers. I have a roomy car, and it was an opportunity to give my
brain a rest, whilst hopefully making a difference. The Last Word with Pippa Graber I work on the weekends, it is my busy time in the gallery and as I run a one-woman show, I have to be there. So my perfect weekend is probably lots of footfall in the gallery. I love what I do and I love talking with people and talking about art. Also, I love my social life, so our evenings are full. My partner and I will either be out at a gig, having dinner with friends at home entertaining or going out to a restaurant and/or movie in the evenings.
What is your favourite place to eat?
Hello, my name is Pippa Graber. I am an art dealer and I own and run artdog gallery in SE23 How long have you lived in the area? I have lived in southeast London since 1993, before that I was in Wimbledon for three years and before that I was in New York City.
What brought you here? I grew up in the UK until I was eight and always wanted to return. I also married a man who lived here and we wanted to raise our family in the UK rather than the USA. Turns out that was a very good decision.
What has changed most during that time? Almost everything has changed in the last 30 plus years but the nicest thing about our area is that it seems to maintain its authenticity, its basic nature. This is despite the huge gentrification that has taken place in so many areas of the southeast, the area just seems to attract nice people.
What do you most value about the area? I love my neighbourhood, it is so varied and never boring. I get so many interesting and interested people visiting the gallery.
The one thing you couldn’t do without? Art.

I really like the variety of great local restaurants and I am a big foodie. I often go to Yama Momo in East Dulwich, Two Spoons in Honor Oak and The Thai Corner Café are just some of my regular favs. Pizzarte is only a few doors away from me and I often think if they did not exist, I sometimes wouldn’t eat! I don’t even have to order any more when I go, they know what I have. We also often have breakfast/bruch at Forest Hill Café & Bistro…the best omelets!
Coffee or tea? Where? Coffee, always. Marvelous Greens and Beans are fantastic as is The Pantry in Forest Hill.
Your favourite place to go for a drink? Two Spoon in Honor Oak make a mean G&T.
Where’s your favourite place to walk? My favourite local walk is up Lowther Hill to Blythe Hill Fields, then down to Ladywell Park and through to Ladywell. I then like to go for coffee at the excellent French Café in Ladywell then walk back via Hilly Fields, which also has an excellent café. We are so lucky to have so many fantastic green spaces in the area and be able to observe the seasons. Next favourite place is the Suffolk countryside.
If money was no object.. If money was no object, other than buying houses for my children, I don’t think my life would be very different. I think if I could hire someone to be in the gallery two days a week, I probably would but not sure that I would!
