Welcome It’s May and it is my favourite month of the year. Not just because my birhtday is this month but it is the return of the fabulous Dulwich Festival! There are so many amazing events to choose from, read our preview on page 20. The Artists’ Open House is also part of the Festival, there are too many to feature but read about a collective of artists on page 16. For the full programme please visit www.dulwichfestival.co.uk. Along with the great programme of events there are three fairs this year. The festival starts with the fantasic Festival Fair on Goose Green (can I you guess I organise it!) , then the Love West Dulwich Fair the following weekend, ending with the lovely Dulwich Park Fair on the final Sunday. Art Prize for Visitors to Sydenham Hill Could you be the lucky winner?

rtist Sarah Hamilton felt lonely in May 2013 when she was the only exhibitor in Artists’ Open House in her neck of Peckarmans Wood. But since that time the number of participating artists has steadily increased. For the first time this year, a cluster of six houses are opening their doors to showcase the work of ten different artists. On 7 and 8 May visitors will be encouraged to collect ‘stamps’ at each venue; and when all six houses have been seen, they will be able to enter a prize draw. The prize will be an Art Swag Bag – an exciting sample of works by Sydenham Hill artists. The scheme was devised by the enterprising Anna Jackson, who will be exhibiting for the first time at 2 Crescent Wood Road. She is a printmaker who loves fabrics and she creates pieces evocative of dreamy landscapes. She is also planning an intriguing ‘tea pot installation’. All the open houses are as fascinating for their architecture and interiors, as for the art on show. Two new hosts, at 2 and 4 Crescent Wood Road, will welcome you in Victorian properties which have survived the transformation of the area by the Dulwich Estate in the 1950s and 60s. Sarah Hamilton’s house was the object of a lengthy feature in the latest issue of the prestigious magazine Midcentury, the author of the article exclaiming: ‘I love how fluid and social this house is’. Sarah Hamilton in her studio ©Torla Evans sociable too: no-one should miss the yearly treat of Sarah’s pop-up tea shop, run by Chris and Yuko (the home-made cakes are legendary). Sarah’s work is like a breath of fresh air – colourful, witty and inventive. She has invited Gabriela Szulman and Georgia Bosson to show work alongside her own. At least three artists work in harmony with their mid-century environment – Justine Ellis, Sarah Hamilton and Virginia Armstrong (Roddy&Ginger). Tiff Howick, by contrast, is drawn to wild-life themes, so relevant to the Dulwich Woods on everyone’s doorstep. But expect an explosion of colour with Eve Williams and Elizabeth Lloyd. Jo Lewis is a landscape artist who works with paper, ink, watercolour and the ebb and flow of the tidal Thames: ‘on the shores of the Thames there is a feeling of landscape, like nowhere else in the city’, she says. And Jo developed a close and trusting relationship with the river, allowing its muddy waters to spread vibrant colours across the immersed sheets of paper. The results are thrilling. Jo also runs popular workshops at the National Gallery and the Dulwich Picture Gallery, so catching her at home should be a real treat. Brunch Time Haunts

hilst we are all going to running around the area at break neck speed this month trying to cram in as much of the Dulwich Festival as we can, I thought I would forego the usual Hectic Host labour saving entertaining tips in favour something even quicker. No one can appreciate art on an empty stomach, so whether you decide to meet over breakfast or make a midmorning pit stop, here is a guide to just a few of our favourite brunch time haunts. Mr. Bao on Rye Lane, serves up a delicious weekend brunch: The Full Taiwanese (pictured) consisting of Taiwanese sausage, korokke, smoked bacon, eggs, tomato jam and you have not had beans until you have tried Mr. Bao’s Asian beans. Just across the road at Pedler, on Peckham Rye, I would encourage meat eaters to tuck into a very hearty Pig Mac of 2 pig patties, G’s sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles & fries. Anderson & Company on Bellenden Road serves Cilbir: Turkish poached eggs that will put a spring in your step; two poached eggs, herbed labneh, chili butter, chimichurri all on sourdough toast. Lordship Lane is foodie heaven and with so many wonderful places to choose from my apologies to the many I do not have room to include. The Brick House Bakery, world famous for its Peckham Rye Bread serves Square Mile coffee; the perfect fuel for those that may be flagging. I was first introduced to the joys of Christine Ferber’s jams when I was fortunate enough to meet a friend for breakfast in the George V in Paris, I was delighted when I discovered these incredible concoctions are served in our very

Le Chandelier is an essential part of any visit to East Dulwich and I can recommend the Kedgeree and their Belgian Waffles wholeheartedly. The Dulwich Picture Gallery Café, is always buzzing and terrace is great for a spot of people watching. Spiced Lamb Burgers Here is a recipe for the most amazing spiced lamb burger, perfect now the BBQ season is fast approaching! Serves approximately 6 depending on size! Preparation time 20 mins plus 30 minutes chilling time Cooking time 6-10 minutes (depends on thickness)

Ingredients • 1kg Minced lamb • 2 Diced White onion • 2 Diced Red Chili’s • 1 Tablespoon Whole grain Mustard • 1 Whole Egg • 500g Chopped fresh mint

Method 1) In a large bowl, thoroughly mix all ingredients. 2) Once combined well take a nice handful and roll it into a ball, then set aside. 3) Do this until all the mix is portioned out and then place in the fridge for half an hour to chill. 4) While the mix is chilling, get your grill pan or BBQ hot. 5) After 30 minutes in the fridge the burger mix is ready to be formed into burgers. You can do any size or depth that you like, but I prefer a juicy, fatter burger rather than a large flat one. 6) Once they are all shaped you are ready to start cooking, they should take about 3 minutes on each side, but this will depend on how fat you have made them. It is important to ensure that the meat is cooked the whole way through before serving. 7) I like to serve mine in a buttery brioche bun, with fresh tomatoes, crisp lettuce and a harrissa yogurt. 8) Remember, you don’t have to use lamb mince, turkey mince is a nice 'healthier' version

Barbecuing is theatre! 9) Marinade, Marinade, Marinade – so many choices, explore them all! 10) It takes time for your caramelised BBQ crust to develop so don’t keep dipping your steaks or burgers’ a maximum of two times should be enough.

Spring Comes to SE23 J ust in time for the GLA election and the EU referendum, spring has come to se23. That Easter was so early this year, and that BST began on Easter Sunday (I think that is the first time that I have been aware of such a coincidence) we can now experience longer lighter days and look forward to spring and summer events after a really miserable winter. Reviewing future events in my calendar, I have our next Perry Vale assembly, which will be held on Thursday 12th May 2016 at the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Church-the German Evangelical Church-in Dacres Road. I am very pleased to return there as it gives residents the opportunity to also visit Dacres Wood Nature Reserve next door, which is one of Perry Vale’s best kept secrets. One of our assembly coordinating group will be organising a tour of the reserve between 6 and 6.45 pm just before the assembly proper begins at 7pm in the church and also providing a short report on the reserve at the meeting. The details of the assembly will be found on the Door2Door leaflet which will come through the letterboxes of Perry Vale residents in early May and on the Lewisham Council website. Out of my idea last year of holding an open air assembly Lark in the Park was born, and our plans are well under way for a bigger and better Lark in the Park 2 for Saturday 18th June 2016. This will be again held in our ward’s much loved Mayow Park, and we have built on last year’s success and expect there to be many more stalls providing information from the local community, various activities, choices of food and storytelling. I have asked the Mayor of Lewisham, Sir Steve Bullock, to open our event and wait to hear if he is available. To make this a real lark in the park, I just need someone to arrange the weather to be as lovely as that we enjoyed in 2015. Details of Lark in the Park 2 will be available in early June in time for the event, and a great day is planned for all. For those art lovers amongst you, the annual Friends of the Horniman Art Exhibition will be

held over the weekend of 4-5th June 2016 in the wonderful setting of the museum’s conservatory. This year will see us celebrate the 25th, and therefore the Silver Anniversary, of the exhibition, which has become a regular addition to south east London’s social calendar. It is well worth saying that the Friends Summer Exhibition would not have achieved its success without the support and dedication over the past 25 years of both new and old art exhibition committee members, and as Chair of the Friends my thanks go to them. This year I am very pleased to again have Deborah Masters leading a team coordinating the artists and the exhibition’s arrangements, with promises to surpass last year’s high quality exhibits. We also hope to encourage increased sales of the art works to raise more funds for the museum. Thank goodness it is spring and I hope to see you at one or more of its coming events.

Will Owners

recently received a text which read, “Mr & Mrs Client are the proud owners of a signed Will. Thank you for your assistance.” I have this text saved on my mobile but will soon print it out. I am neither a Will writer nor here to sell Wills. However, I have witnessed some of the pain and suffering families endure following the death a loved one, especially the main income earner in the household, without a Will in place. It may be a morbid subject or one you don’t want to discuss, nevertheless, it cannot be avoided or should not be put off until later. Just think of the comedian Rik Myall who died unexpectedly aged only 56 in 2014, without a Will. Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring. Death in the absence of a Will presents additional challenges for a grieving family. Firstly, the potential size of the inheritance tax (IHT) bill and secondly, the squabble for the deceased’s estate. Sadly, history has shown that death often brings out the worst in human behaviour. A sad reflection of this is the comment from a client following the death of his mother over five years ago. “The death of mum is the end of the family. All five of us will never be in the same room again.” If death isn’t enough to be dealing with, the headache of IHT and the distribution of the deceased’s estate are wholly unwarranted additions. The existence of inheritance tax at 40% on estates over £325,000 makes death and taxes more like marriage partners in 2016 and therefore endorse the words of Daniel Defoe "Things as certain as death and taxes, can be more firmly believed." The current threshold for IHT demonstrates that it is somewhat easy for some SE21 and SE22 property owners to trigger an IHT liability. A Will should be the cornerstone of everyone’s financial planning strategy. Why? A Will allows the direction of your estate in your absence. Moreover it provides some protection for your loved ones. Moreover, it is a key tool to commence your IHT tax planning.

The changing nature of families in 2016 heightens the requirement for the preparation of a Will more than before. Today we have multiple marriages (not all at the same time!) co-habitation, joint home ownership (often without consideration of the mode of ownership), off springs from multiple relationship combinations, single parent households and marriage separations without divorce. These households of 2016 may result in a cocktail of disaster if death was to occur without a valid Will in place. The death of a partner in a co-habitee relationship introduces an additional headache or complication, if there was no Will in place. In short, the surviving partner is left without any share of the estate without a legal challenge. This experience was played out several years ago in a neighbouring borough. A long-term cohabitee who was separated (not divorced) died and the surviving cohabitee was left in a battle with the wife and children. This is an unnecessary requirement whilst grieving the loss of a loved one. The ownership of assets such as the family home presents its own challenges when death occurs without a valid Will, given the changing nature of today’s family. Has any thought been given to the current mode of ownership and who will receive the assets on death? These questions can never be answered after a death has occurred. Time spent addressing them now can save pain and costs tomorrow. You too can join Mr & Mrs Client and be the proud owners of a signed Will and have one less headache on death.

The Fragrant Garden

cent can be a last consideration when choosing plants – but even a few fragrant flowers near a seating area will make your morning coffee or evening drink a more uplifting experience. Here are some ideas to create your own garden fragrance.

Herbs

Bring wonderful Mediterranean aromas into the garden with aromatic plants and herbs. Lavender such as dark purple Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’ flowers from July and releases its aromatic oil when touched, so plant near a sunny seat or path. Purple sage, Salvia officinalis Purpurascens, complements the silvery grey foliage of lavender. Add thyme, oregano and chives for a pretty combination that’ll be great for your cooking too.

Shrubs Lilac (Syringa) comes into its own now with its heavenly scented blousy blooms in purples and white. Syringa vulgaris are most perfumed and dwarf varieties can be grown in pots in smaller gardens. I love Osmanthus x burkwoodii, a pretty evergreen shrub with fragrant creamy white flowers in spring. There are lots of scented viburnums such as Viburnum x burkwoodii which has clusters of gorgeous pinky white vanilla scented flowers in April. Winter flowering Daphnes such as Daphne Odora with its delicate clusters of pale pink flowers will give you a lift on a cold day – as will fab Sarcococca, with its neat evergreen foliage and a mass of pungent honey-sweet creamy flowers throughout winter.

Spring Bulbs Spring bulbs are great grown in pots, strategically placed near a door or seating area– then moved away while the foliage dies back. Hyacinths (Hyacinthus orientalis) come in some gorgeous colours, white, blues, purples. Grape hyacinth Muscari ‘Golden Fragrance’ is one of my favourite scent-wise.

Perennials and annuals Try growing Lilium regale in a large pot for a divine smell that will perfume the whole garden when 36 | SE23 - May 2016

they open. They’re great to bring into the house too. A word of caution though, all parts can be fatal to cats. Phlox paniculata cultivars and dianthus are other sweet smelling perennials. As for annuals, you can’t get more fragrant than sweet peas (Lathyrus). They’ll cling to anything – a trellis, a wigwam of cherry sticks. To keep them going you need to pick them everyday. So bring them into the house and enjoy a constant supply of fresh, sweetly scented flowers.

Climbers Jasmine, whether Jasmine officinale or the evergreen tidier Trachelospermum jasminoides should be in every garden. Aquebia quinata, the chocolate vine is a also a must for its delicate, yes chocolate, scent. And Wisteria of course for spectacular Spring scent.

Roses They’re not all fragrant but David Austin roses are bred for scent. Choosing a rose, or any scented plant for that matter, is like choosing a perfume, you need to make some research, not in books, not online, you actually need to visit gardens and smell loads of roses, until you find the one for you.

The Last Word – David Sanger The most famous person you’ve seen? Running around Dulwich Park, I once saw Iain Glen out on his own run. He plays a favourite character of mine in Game of Thrones so I immediately convinced myself I had the same training regime as this noble knight!

Describe your perfect weekend It would involve a hefty stack of pancakes and bacon from Le Chandelier, followed by some sun in Dulwich Park. I’d reopen The Crown and Greyhound early so I could get an afternoon pint before watching something on the outdoor screen at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. Sunday would then be breakfast at the Blackbird Bakery before an old film at the Picturehouse to forget it’s Monday tomorrow!

What is your favourite place to eat? David Sanger’s debut novel ‘All Their Minds in Tandem’ is set in West Virginia in 1879 and focuses on the introduction of an enigmatic stranger to a town scarred by the Civil War. David is an East Dulwich resident and worked in publishing for six years before deciding to become a writer.

How long have you lived in the area? I’ve lived in East Dulwich for five years, with one year in Berlin in the middle.

What brought you here? It was originally because my girlfriend was a teacher at a local school. We knew next to nothing about the area but soon fell in love with it. That’s what brought us back.

What do you most value about your street? The quiet! I live near East Dulwich station but once I’ve turned onto the street, it’s like shutting a window. Birdsong replaces car horns and I know I’m almost home.

What one thing would you change? I’d go back and open the Picturehouse cinema a few years earlier. I frequented The Ritzy before, which I love, but the Picturehouse is so fantastic and I feel spoilt having it so close.

The one thing you couldn’t do without? The local acting group The Dulwich Players. I auditioned for one of their plays soon after moving to Dulwich and have hardly been apart from them since. In addition to the acting, they’re an incredible group of people who encompass all that’s creative and welcoming about the area. 40 | SE23 - May 2016

I love Rocca in Dulwich Village. It’s so friendly and welcoming and the food is incredible there. But if ever their tiger prawns on sourdough toast leaves the menu I’ll stage a one-man protest.

Cafe, pub or bar? Café for me. I love taking a book or a notepad to a café, which soon gets sidelined by my people watching. It’s another guilty pleasure I put down to ‘book research’.

The book I’m reading at the moment.. I love David Sedaris and am currently reading ‘Me Talk Pretty One Day’. His writing is so sharp, unabashed and wicked, and his stories reduce me to laughter and tears so readily. I don’t think there’s anyone who can end a piece of writing as well as him.

My perfect holiday.. Whilst a beach holiday with nothing to do has its appeal, a trip to Berlin would win it for me as it’s like a second home. I’ve been there a lot but I don’t think I’ll ever really know it. Plus I still suffer withdrawal from German cakes so need to go back regularly.

My secret ambition.. I’m a huge Star Wars fan so being able to write anything to do with that would install a permanent smile on my face.
