Grayling examines, tests, and challenges the concept of war. In a profoundly wise conclusion, the author envisions “just war theory” in new moral terms, taking into account the lessons of World War II and the Holocaust and laying down ethical principles for going to war and for conduct during war. Food & Drink with Suzanne James

Spring Tacos with Mushrooms We have been experimenting with Tacos this month, to be served as evening food for a wedding couple with a Mexican connection. This traditional Mexican dish is composed of a corn or wheat tortilla folded or rolled around a filling. A taco can be made with a variety of fillings, including beef, pork, chicken, seafood, vegetables, and cheese, allowing for great versatility and variety. This easy recipe with garlic, mushrooms and melted cheese couldn’t be simpler, it is meat free but has amazing flavour and is the perfect dish to serve as the warmer weather arrives. Serves 4. Preparation time 10 minutes. Cooking time 10-20 minutes

Ingredients • 25g (3/4oz butter) • 2 tablespoon olive oil • 250g Oyster Mushrooms, sliced • 250g Chestnut Mushrooms, sliced • 250g Button Mushrooms, sliced • Sea Salt & Black Pepper • 1 tablespoon Truffle Oil (optional) • 2 Shallots, finely chopped • 2 Cloves of Garlic, finely chopped • Small handful thyme, chopped

To Serve • 4 Soft Tacos (homemade or buy ready made) • Small handful of parsley, roughly chopped • Grated Pecorino Cheese • Sweet Chipotle Paste • Chilli or Fresh Tomato Salsa

Method 1) Heat half the butter and olive oil in a frying pan and add the mushrooms, garlic, seasoning, thyme and salt and pepper. 2) Cook over a high heat until the mushrooms have released their juices and the juice has started to evaporate – about 10 minutes. 3) Add the rest of the butter and the oil, including the truffle oil if you are using it, the shallots and cook until soft. 4) Check the seasoning. 14 | SE23 - May 2017

5) Spoon the mushrooms into a heated dish and sprinkle over the parsley and cheese. 6) Make the tacos with the mushroom mix and add sweet chipotle sauce or fresh tomato salsa, add a dollop of crème fraiche and roll.

When his brother Jack suggests having Dolores murdered, Judah is faced with a moral dilemma: destruction of his life, or murder. The Struggle for Local Primary School Places

I

f you’re a parent with a child approaching Reception age, chances are you’ve spent the last three months worrying about which local primary school they’ll be allocated. Fingers crossed, you’ll get your first or second choice, but what do you do if, like me, the unthinkable happens and you don’t get any of your six choices?

Keep an Open Mind Your allocated school should invite you to an open day to put your mind at ease and discuss any issues may have. If they don’t, phone the head teacher and arrange to see the school before accepting your place. Approach the visit with an open mind, ask lots of questions and give them the opportunity to present themselves – you may be pleasantly surprised by what they have to say.

Review All Your Options If you’re still not happy, contact Lewisham for a list of schools with available places. I was pleased to find a lovely new school a short drive away that still had spaces. Looking around it, I got a much better vibe than at our allocated school – the facilities were amazing and all the staff were lovely. We accepted a place immediately.

The Waiting Game You can also remain on a waitlist for the schools you didn’t get in to. There may be some movement between May and September, but after the first term you’ll have a better idea of your chances once the people who are happy with their school drop off the list. Parents with spring or summer born children may be tempted to defer their allocated school in the hope that another place will come up before their child’s 5th birthday, but it’s a risk. We jumped from 38 to number 7 on our top school’s waitlist but it’s still highly unlikely that we’d be offered a place within the school year. 22 | SE23 - May 2017

Can You Appeal? If you genuinely think a mistake has been made, you have the right to appeal, but you only have to look at previous years to see that they very rarely succeed.

What Works for You? Once you’ve considered all options, think hard about what works best for your family. I opted for a school that’s slightly further away. The school’s fantastic with great on-site wraparound care, but the place we were originally allocated would have been closer to home. There’s a lot to be said for choosing a nearby school if you rely on a local support network for pick up and drop offs. Finally, don’t panic. Your child is off to ‘big school’ and wherever they go, they’ll be much happier if they’ve heard positive things from you. As far as they’re concerned, their school was your first and only choice! Financial Matters

Who will teach your children about money?

M

any parents shield their children from the reality that is money and finance thinking it may stress them out or compromise their innocence. This normally happens in families where money is a sore subject and is not a good approach. Unless your child is studying economics at school, they are more likely to learn about the mysteries of trigonometry than the basics of money. Which is more important? At secondary school, I could discuss the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle but couldn’t fathom what a mortgage was. My parents never discussed money in front of me. Occasionally, when I’d ask for a financial contribution, my father would lose his temper and shout: “Do you think I am made of money?” I still had no idea what he was talking about. It is therefore important that you teach your children about money as early as possible.

Investing

Saving

Insurance

This is arguably the most important money lesson a parent can teach their child. Giving your child pocket money and teaching them how to manage it is a great life lesson. My suggestion would be to give your child a finite amount of pocket money every week or month and no more. The stricter you are, the better because that’s how real life works. Most people have to live on a wage and when they run out of funds, it’s tough. Pocket money should be no different.

Borrowing The concept of borrowing can be taught by using pocket money as a basis. When your child runs out of funds and becomes desperate, you as a parent could lend to them, but only if they have a good track record of previous borrowing. You could give them a mutually agreed method of repayment and charge interest on the amount borrowed. This should prepare them for the dangers of borrowing money in real-life. 26 | SE23 - May 2017

Playing Monopoly is a great way to teach your child about the concept of investing, but there are other lessons to be learned through the game. Being rich, being broke, paying tax, purchasing property, paying fines, paying rent and the misery of going to jail and are all great financial life lessons.

Risk And Reward A parent's instinct is to insulate their children from harm. It is, therefore, understandable why risk doesn’t get discussed much at home. Parents who have equity based investments such as stocks and shares ISAs should discuss them with their children. The concept of risk v reward can be a difficult one to explain. However, teaching children about risk in a controlled environment, i.e. at home could be a vital way of preparing them for later life.

The best way to teach children about the value of insurance is to tell them why you insure your home, your car, your travel, your life and your health. Discuss claims with them, talk to them about your premiums and what you would have to do to make a successful claim.

Conclusion It is best to be open and transparent with your finances with your children. Don’t be afraid to discuss what you earn with them, be open about financial problems and celebrate financial success with them. Teach them to keep your affairs confidential but try not to hide anything from them, even when times are difficult. You’ll be doing them a big favour. Garden Talk

Clematis Crazy Clematis will cloak your fences in rich colour – and there’s one for every season. Here’s my pick of the best:

Spring Spring flowering clematis tend to have smallish flowers. First up in March are the evergreen C. armandii variety with long dark green leaves and a mass of small, scented flowers. ‘Snowdrift’ is pure white and ‘Apple Blossom’ pink-tinged. From April to May come the delicate bellshaped flowers of the alpina clematis such as the gorgeous deep blue ‘Frances Rivis’ and pink ‘Constance.’ The multi-petalled C. macropetala varieties are very pretty - exquisite grey-blue ‘Lagoon‘ is a must. Finally, for May there are the vigorous montanas. C. ‘Elizabeth’ has a mass of pale pink flowers while ‘Willsonii’ is a lovely scented white variety. Cultivation: Armandii and alpina are happy in dappled shade – montanas need more warmth. These Group 1 clematis need a tidy up after flowering to remove dead shoots and keep to their allotted space. Armandii can be cut right back after flowering to avoid the leathery leaves taking over.

Early Summer If you like big (up to 15cm wide) exotic-looking flowers, early summer clematis, which start flowering in June, are for you. The blousy ‘Nelly Moser’ with large lilac striped flowers is well known, or try purple ‘The President’ or deep red ‘Niobe’. Cultivation: They like sun or partial shade, depending on the variety as some such as ‘Nelly Moser’ are best in shade to prolong the flowers. These pruning group 2 clematis can become a tangle so remove old stems to the base in late February leaving a framework of healthy stems shortened to around a third before being tied in.

Late Summer Clematis flowering from July are great as they keep going well into Autumn. C. ‘Jackmanii’ is a wellknown variety with deep purple flowers and yellow green stamen. C. Etoile Violette is a winner with rich plummy purple flowers and yellow gold stamens, while C. ‘Purpurea Plena Elegans’, is a pretty dusky 30 | SE23 - May 2017

pale plum double. ‘Prince Charles’ with sky blue flowers is similar to ‘Perle d’Azure’ but more reliable and compact so great for fences. These clematis look lovely scrambling amongst climbing roses such as the pink ‘New Dawn’, or yellow ‘Buff Beauty’ Cultivation: They tolerate partial shade but prefer sun. Group 3 is easy to prune by cutting back old growth to 23/45 cm in mid February to mid March above a healthy bud. (As a rule of thumb any clematis flowering from July can be cut hard back in spring as they flower on the current year’s growth.)

Autumn For a bit of zing, C. orientalis ‘Bill MacKenzie’ has bright lemon-peel like petals and silky seeds into October – but it’s also useful for its foliage, which stays green from May to November. Golden Tiara is another of the same tangutica variety with black stamens. Cultivation: Happy in sun or shade. ‘Bill Mackenzie’ can become large so prune hard (20cm from the ground) in February and again in the summer.

Winter Clematis In the dead of winter, clematis cirrhosa varieties, brighten the garden with their delicate bell-shaped flowers and evergreen foliage. ‘Wisley Cream’ is white and ‘Freckles’ has dark pink speckles. Cultivation: Cut back overlong shoots to a healthy bud after flowering if growth needs to be restricted. Janine Winlaw - Writer & Gardener

A report will be issued in September and public consultation will be organised for the autumn. The Mayor of Lewisham will then consider the proposals by March 2009.
