Welcome to SE23 We are now approaching our 7th week of lockdown and life has changed so much. Unfortunately I was unable to distribute my April magazines, but I am determined that SE23 will keep going, whatever happens, so here is our online version. The magazine has been available online for many years, but I will be making a special effort to share this one far and wide. Please do use the share this copy with everyone you know! There has been so much to be thankful for in the past six weeks. One particular highlight is the The Big SE4/SE23 raffle set up by local residents, Amanda Pearce and Nicola Johnson. The full story is on page 6 and there is still time to buy a ticket and support our local economy. They both have the Last Word too, see pages 44 and 45. Around Dulwich has an update on how some businesses have adapted their business to cope with the lockdown, see page 24-27. As always we have lots of extra news and stories on our website www.arounddulwich. co.uk, so please do check it out. On Friday 8th May, we will be celebrating VE Day. I am grateful to Vicky from Essentials Magazines for kindly sharing some wonderful lockdown suggestions for celebrating in style. See from page 32. I have been overwhelmed by the support of my clients who have supported this online issue. Please do try to buy local where you can. Keep checking our social media channels for updates on businesses reopening. Please note that you click on links in ads and stories in this issue. Until next time, take good care.

The Great Big SE4 & SE23 Raffle
Inspired by the idea of SE22 local Victoria, Nicola and Amanda are hosting The Great Big SE4 and SE23 Raffle to support their local small, independent businesses. The Covid-19 pandemic has hit these businesses hard, being the heart and soul of the community and facing the most trying times as they battle through adapted models of operation or are currently forced to remain closed. Through the purchase of tickets, currently in excess of 6200 sold, the raffle funds buying products and services from these indies, to help them find their way forward. Both women are passionate about the community and the impact it has, and have looked for a way to repay the spirit - in particular for Amanda, who found so much support from individuals and businesses in 2019 after the birth of a very poorly baby. Along with many prizes from local businesses there is one very special prize - a 7 night stay for up to 6 people in Prado Lobero, Candeleda, Spain. This is a BONUS prize, that has been kindly donated by a Brockley resident who saw a post about the raffle in the I Love SE4 Facebook group. She wants absolutely nothing in return - she just really wanted to do something to help support the raffle and local independent businesses, as well as give people in the local community something 6 | SE23 - May 2020
to look forward to. She also sees the donation of the prize as a show of support for the village of Candeleda where the cottage is located, which like many other Spanish village communities has been hit hard by the Covid-19 crisis. Here is what she said: “We all need something to look forward to in 2021! So we are offering as a prize a 7 night stay in the delightful cottage of Prado Lobero in Candeleda, Spain – about 2 hours West of Madrid. The cottage sleeps 6 people and is set in a large meadow on the Southern slopes of the Gredos Mountains. With gorgeous views and terraces on which to sip a glass of wine or “refresco”, it has its own swimming pool and garden and is the ideal place to just do nothing! It also has incredible nature and bird life, fabulous walking, mountain biking, horse riding and wild water swimming. Perfect for recovery from 2020 Covid-19 year. The village of Candeleda, like so many others in Spain which depend on visitors and tourism, has been having a terrible time in recent weeks. Local jobless levels, already high, are now at record levels (over 50%), the army and police have been controlling entrance and exit into the town, shopping has only been allowed once a week depending on the number on your national ID card and no outdoor exercise has been allowed at all. In addition, the town has a high proportion of vulnerable older residents with so many younger families migrating to cities like Madrid to try to make ends meet. By entering the raffle you are helping local independent businesses in SE London, but if you win this prize you will also helping to rebuild a vibrant local community in Spain!” You can still buy raffle tickets via: https://raffall.com/15277/enter-raffle-to-win-thegreat-big-se4-se23-raffle-hosted-by-nicola-johnson @bigseraffle @BigSERaffle @BigSERaffle

Look Before You Leap Interiors with Bradley Viljoen | www.bradleyviljoendesign.com
L
ast year I was contacted by a client who, with the best of intentions, passion and energy and, believing he had everything sorted, threw himself into his property’s refurbishment. His builder was given full responsibility for the day to day project management. After just 2 weeks into the project, the cry for help came in. Engaging an interior designer at this late stage is not uncommon but, is fraught with problems. The client may not know the interior designer’s work and approach, the existing design may lack professional aesthetic and practical input, and the space for conflict and/or compromise is wide. The purpose of any refurbishment is to fulfil a human need. Having early professional input is critical in the design and delivery of an outcome that successfully satisfies that need. The project contained perfectly suitable technical information for any builder to follow. What was lacking is what turns a house into a fully functional and comfortable home. Lighting would have failed to meet the required outcomes for ambient, accent or task needs. Electrical sockets were placed randomly, some of no use to anyone. Wardrobe doors did not open as they clashed with the beds. Radiators were poorly placed and affected furniture layouts. Quite simply, the technical plans would not have met the client’s practical needs or realised the vision he had of how he would be living and experiencing his new home. We may think these sort of design issues would not happen under our own watchful eyes, but, they do, and often. Back to my project. The build continued at pace and headway had to be made quickly despite the lack of design specification, including furniture, fixings and equipment. We kept as far as we could to the original plan. Where design decisions and compromises had to be made, and quickly, the agreed alterations also had to be within budget or as close as possible to it. Do not expect an approved design to be static; they rarely are. The client’s preference was to source products organically as the project moved towards completion which would have had created conflict with the build programme. The need to specify,
10 | SE23 - May 2020
source, and order all the required products had basically been overlooked. I knew action had to be taken and the cry for help became a call for action. Immediately mood boards were produced, specialist stores and shops visited, wall colours tested and chosen, all within a few weeks. Luckily, (or was it by design?) all the chosen materials came within a few days of being required on site. Any further delays would have paused the project. If you have the freedom to make your design options, choosing what you want when you feel the need to, then you are in the fortunate minority. In my experience, deadlines are generally always set around a ‘move-in date’ or, a need to be settled before the school term starts. Expectations are therefore high. As a designer, my desire is to help my clients make their choices and inevitable compromises at the start of the project, when they have the greatest freedom, not at the ‘11th hour’ when the result is in some way less than desirable and when additional costs can no longer be avoided. My advice is to nail down everything at the start, understand your build, products and ordering schedule and be ready. You will then be able to leap into your refurbishment with confidence.

Your Gardening To Do List For May Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw Now that we’re spending more time in our homes, those of us lucky enough to have one are appreciating our garden more than ever. Here’s how to keep yours at its best at this time of year.
Pruning Prune early flowering shrubs like weigela, ribes, philadelphus and deciduous magnolias. Cut back flowered growth to strong young shoots lower down the plant and around a quarter of older stems. And cut back flowered shoots of choisya for the chance of a second flush. Prune back Clematis montana and armandii, as well as honeysuckle and other vigorous climbers. Lightly prune evergreen topiary and hedges with pruning shears. Cut back flowering stems and yellowing foliage on spring bulbs (around six weeks after flowering). Until then, keep watering and feeding bulbs to prepare them for next year. ( Growing bulbs like tulips in a pot is a good way of avoiding having to look at the foliage as it dies back as you can move it away.)
Tidying Keep on top of weeds – pulling out dandelions while they’re small is easier as you need to remove the whole root. Stake tall herbaceous perennials such as peonies now before they start flopping over other plants. Tie in climbing and rambling roses– ideally horizontally to encourage more flowers. Tie in sweet peas regularly as well as other vigorous climbers such as clematis and akebia to control where they grow. Mow the lawn once or twice a week, raising the blades if it’s dry – little an often keeps it healthier. Feed the lawn with a liquid or slow release fertiliser such as chicken manure pellets.
Pests Keep an eye out for slugs and snails, particularly after rain, and around new shoots. Pick them off by hand or use organic slug pellets or beer traps (jars of beer sunk into the soil to attract 12 | SE23 - May 2020

and drown slugs!). Keep checking roses for aphids spraying them off with soapy water or squashing them off with your fingers.
Watering & Feeding Start giving the garden a really good drenching at least once a week in warm weather, especially plants that like moisture such as hydrangea, anything newly planted and developing fruit and vegetables. Containers can need watering daily – depending on the plants. Feed flowering pot plants weekly with liquid fertiliser and feed hungry plants like sweet peas. Apply or renew a mulch of well-rotted manure to beds to cut down on weeding and watering – ideally after a downpour, as mulch keeps water out, as well as in.
Planting & Dividing Divide spring flowering perennials to make new plants followed by a feed and water. Plant out courgettes and tomatoes in a sunny spot. You can also sow French and runner beans straight into the ground now as well as perpetual spinach and Swiss chard – which can look nice and lush in your flower beds - as well as continuing to sow beetroot, radishes and lettuce. Surround ripening strawberries with straw to keep them off the soil and protect fruit bushes with netting. Plant out dahlias and tender exotics such as canna toward the end of the month.

Burgers T
Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk here is nothing that beats a good homemade burger and these are superb. This is a really simple recipe that guarantees truly scrumptious Burgers! It is very easy to follow and as always, a huge hit with the family! If you don’t have horseradish, use mustard. If you don’t like mustard, keep it simple and leave it out! Add sundried tomatoes to the meat mix and pickles before you serve. It really doesn’t matter, just enjoy them! This is a uber quick and ultra-delicious recipe. Fabulous for a BBQ - at a safe social distance of course. Watch me make them over on Instagram: https://bit.ly/2YgIpd6 #cupboardcookeryclasses Cooking time 30-40 Minutes
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • •
750g minced beef 1 onion (or shallots) - chopped A handful of chopped Parsley 2 clove garlic – crushed 2 large tsp horseradish sauce (or mustard) 1/2 tbsp Worcester sauce 1 egg Up to 2 tbsp breadcrumbs Extra onions to caramelise for the buns 6 burger buns Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Method 1) Heat Olive Oil in frying pan 2) Add Chopped Onions and two cloves of garlic 3) Add a pinch of salt and pepper 4) Cook onion until transparent then leave to cool 5) Take the minced beef, place in a bowl and add two tablespoons of Worcestershire Sauce, two large teaspoons of horseradish sauce, a pinch of salt & pepper and a dessertspoon of freshly chopped parsley 6) Break your egg into the minced beef and mix all ingredients together in the bowl. 7) When the cooked onions & garlic have cooled add them to the mince. 8) Keep the frying pan to one side as you will use it again to caramelise onions later. 9) If your mince looks too wet you can add a tablespoon of breadcrumbs to it at this point and mix well. 14 | SE23 - May 2020
10) You can use the pan you cooked the onions in to check the consistency of the burger mix if you wish – simply fry off a small amount, like a mini burger in the pan to check it holds together! When you are happy with the mixture place it in the fridge until ready to use. 11) Time to caramelise some onions! Add some more olive oil to the frying pan along with 25g of butter and melt together. 12) Add one sliced onion to the pan along with two or three pinches of sea salt and about a tablespoon of brown sugar, along with a tablespoon of white wine vinegar. 13) Cook down a little, tossing the onions initially, then cover with some silver foil and leave to simmer on a low heat for about 20 minutes to caramelise fully. 14) While the onions are caramelising take your burger mix out of the fridge and divide into 8 equal portions. 15) Mould each patty into a meatball shape then flatten down into a burger. 16) Return to the fridge for about 20 minutes to rest. 17) When onions are caramelised, it is time to cook your burgers on the hob or the BBQ. As you have used mince beef be sure to cook them right through, you can pop them in the oven for 5 minutes before serving to be sure of this. 18) Serve in a bun to your taste, whether that’s with ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, onions….. the choice is yours!

Cooking Online In Lockdown
A
s a freelance nutritional chef, my work revolves around working with people; whether it is a cookery class or workshop, working with clients on a 1-2-1 basis or cooking on a set for a cookbook or magazine. My job also revolves around consistent access to food, so it was no surprise, but still came as a shock, that when we ended up in lockdown all my work completely dried up or needed to be delivered without making contact with others. After an initial panic, I decided to take my experience as a cookery teacher, former university lecturer delivering remote teaching sessions and use my limited (but growing) tech skills to move the parts of my business that I could online. The first week of lockdown was spent trying to make sure my family had what we needed and was spent getting up to speed with transitioning to online class delivery. At times it felt completely impossible; juggling home, kids and attempting to work, but I realised that getting in the kitchen, improving their cooking skills and eating healthily was even more important now. And, I have always had a knack for making meals from cupboard dregs, but my diverse food background has given me the skills and know how to repurpose, reuse and substitute ingredients and still create something delicious and nutritious. I now run cookery classes online and live from my kitchen, to yours. The classes connect people at time when we’re desperately in need of seeing new faces, helps to sharpen your kitchen skills and the benefits of cooking in your own kitchen is important for learning how to use and adapt based on what you have in. My Kids Classes (1 hour) are a complete homeschool package. We focus on a core nutrition topic, I throw in some maths, we cook a nutritious recipe and at the end there’s one less snack that parents have to worry about prepping! Classes for adults include a Fermented Veg Masterclass (think sauerkraut & kimchi) and I also run bespoke 121 lessons where we jointly create a menu based on the ingredients you have or enjoy. I have also just launched a
16 | SE23 - May 2020
group cook and dine session for those who want to cook and eat with a group of friends—I even provide a themed playlist and drink pairings. For more detail on my classes head to https://nenafosterfood.com/online-cookeryclasses/ and I look forward to cooking with you! Nena trained as a nutritional chef at the College of Naturopathic Medicine and has worked with a range of inspiring chefs, including Anna Jones, as well she regularly develops recipes for clients such as Rude Health and other healthfocused brands. She runs workshops and cookery classes across London, including The Garden Museum in Lambeth. She is a mum of two and lives in South East London. You can find her on Facebook and Instagram @nena.foster.food where she is also running a recipe video series called ‘What’s in Your Fridge?’ to help followers create meals from odds and ends in your cupboard and fridge. @nena.foster.food

Kesar &SCo OLICITORS Lost your job? Discriminated at work? Perhaps you can get legal aid? Legal aid is not available for employment disputes, right? Well, not completely. It can be available if your dismissal was based on harassment, victimisation, direct or indirect discrimination or breach of duty. You will still be expected to meet the funding criteria and provide evidence of your financial eligibility such as letters from DWP, but you could have access to an experienced legal practitioner and free, impartial legal advice and representation.
What falls within the scope?
The Equality Act 2010 offers protection to those who have experienced discrimination based on one of the “protected characteristics”, such as race, religion, age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, sex or sexual orientation. Victims of discrimination will be expected to prove that they have been treated differently from the people who do not share their protected characteristic or have experienced a provision, criterion or practice which is discriminatory. If the alleged discrimination involves a public body, it is important to consider a possible breach of the public sector equality duty. The Act imposes an obligation on public bodies to eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it.
What is the aim of legal action?
The courts may award compensation for the loss of earnings and related quantifiable losses as well as damages for injury to feelings. Although the victims have a duty to mitigate loss such as taking steps to find employment, such a requirement does not cover injury to feelings. The damages the court is likely to award are divided in 3 brackets: • lower band of £900 to £9,000
(less serious cases)
• middle band of £9,000 to £27,000
(cases that do not merit an award in the upper band)
• upper band of £27,000 to £45,000
(the most serious cases), with the most exceptional cases capable of exceeding £45,000
Who can qualify for legal aid?
The funding is very restrictive. The eligibility criteria have not been reviewed for many years and did not follow the rising cost of living, property prices, increase of income, including the minimum wage and other relevant factors. You can assess your own eligibility at https://www.gov.uk/legalaid/eligibility.
Not sure what to do?
Your nearest law firm with a specialist LAA discrimination franchise would be happy to help. Even if you don’t qualify for legal aid and are asked to pay a consultation fee, it may well be worth it! Kesar & Co Solicitors 27 London Road, Bromley, BR1 1DG Tel: 020 8181 3100 Email: contact@kesarco.co.uk www.kesarco.co.uk
What are the deadlines?
The proceedings at the Employment Tribunal must be initiated within three months of the end of your employment. The Equality Act allows more time, but the claims must be issued within 6 months, unless the alleged discrimination is ongoing. SE23 - May 2020 | 17

his month I would like to talk about a concept that my business partner Antonia has been talking to me about‌ Absorb and redirect. It's an idea that comes from Kung Fu, which is a very old, traditional Eastern or Chinese form of martial arts, often inspired by old Chinese philosophies, religions and legends. The particular style that Antonia practices (there are many Kung Fu styles) teaches you that in order to become an efficient martial artist one should avoid resisting the forces that come towards you from your opponent. You should instead absorb, redirect and make that energy work for you. I think it's an interesting concept and relevant for today’s challenges. We've got a lot of negativity swirling around, but we also have the opportunity to create and take advantage of a great deal of positivity.
The idea of absorbing & redirecting You absorb the energy that's coming at you, both positive and negative, and then you redirect it. Think about everything that's coming your way. In Kung Fu, for example, if you resist your opponent you become inflexible, paralysed even and therefore unable to move and defend yourself. Also, you are more likely to lose the fight. If, however, you absorb your opponent’s energy and redirect it you are in flow and constantly adjusting and adapting. And if you think about it, this concept is not just valid within the context of a Kung Fu fight. The idea of absorb and redirect can be applied to all kinds of situations in life. What can you do to absorb energy? Don't get too embroiled or too involved in or paralysed by it, redirect it into something really positive. An example could be helping others. Many people who are on furlough have taken up volunteering work. There's been about three quarters of a million people who have offered to help the NHS (Antonia and I are two of them, by the way). You could look at helping your local community and there's a lot you can do to help yourself. 18 | SE23 - May 2020
Another example of how you can absorb and redirect that energy could be by looking at your outgoings and consolidating those things more. There are many different ways that we can redirect our energy in a really positive way. I hope that idea makes sense to you. Someone else described it to me as, "Take the gifts." You know, sometimes you'll think, "I don't want that," and, "Yeah, I'll definitely take that." But it's all a gift in some way and you may not be ready to hear that right now, but at some point you will be. Take those gifts, absorb that energy that's coming in and think about how you can positively redirect it. For some of you, you'll be ready to action this. Others, you'll thinking, "I'm going to have to think about this one because I'm not in the right head space." That's fine too. All the best for now. Stay healthy. Leanne Spencer

Mindset Matters With Becca Teers | www.healthy-habits.me | www.mindplus-experience.com How to Deal with Your Emotions and Stay Calm & Positive It’s human nature to not want to feel pain (emotional or physical pain) and this is why we often prefer to ‘bottle up’ negative emotions rather than feeling them and expressing them. Another aspect of this is that many of us have grown up without being shown how to express our emotions in a healthy way and so we can become afraid of them. We’re scared of a bad reaction or confrontation when we do say how we feel. We may also have learnt to believe certain emotions are ‘wrong’, such as anger, fear, dissapointment, sadness or jelousy. The truth is these emotions are natural and normal and they just need acknowledging (even just to yourself) to become ‘unstuck’, allowing you to release them and feel better.
What happens to suppressed emotions? We push our feelings down but by doing this they don’t go away. They sit beneath the surface and can affect us negatively in different ways. Our emotions are held in the subconscious part of the mind: the part that is not under our conscious control. If we don’t identify them and release them they tend to fester and can be unhealthy for us. For example, if you’re upset about something a partner has said or done and you don’t acknowledge these feelings in a healthy way, you may become more and more resentful and this can affect your relationship negatively. Using this example you may only need to identify these feelings just for yourself and assess whether you do need to express them to the person involved, or not on this occasion. But if you don’t even articulate these emotions to yourself, you’re not really dealing with them at all.
depression, insomnia and physical symptoms like stomach issues, headaches, neck and shoulder tension and pain.
You need to feel it to heal it Here’s a simple tool for acknowledging your feelings and in doing so they become ‘felt’ and will simply pass. This is a super-simple way to acknowledge and process an emotion in order to let it go so that it no longer affects you.
Thought/Emotion Interrupter It is best to write this down, but you can also just run through the process in your head if it is not possible to get pen and paper out! By acknowledging the thought/feeling rather than trying to push it down or letting it take over, it will be processed & released. The second part of this technique allows you to identify an alternative positive feeling, which starts to train the brain to be more positive and resourceful.
Fill in the blanks below when you are feeling triggered; 1) “I am feeling........................................................................................ because...................................................................................................... ” Stay with the feeling for a couple of minutes and breathe. Now the turnaround, which gives you the opportunity to identify and feel an alternative or more helpful (or even just a neutral) way to think about something: 2) “I would prefer to feel................................................................. and feeling this way will allow me to
How do we push our feelings down?
.......................................................................................................................... “
We may use distractions like overeating, drinking alcohol, drugs, watching TV, excessive work or shopping to prevent us facing unwanted feelings. These distractions work in the short-term but suppressing and not dealing with negative emotions can put stress on both the mind and body in the long-term. This can result in anxiety,
If, like many of us processing your feelings is a new habit just practice this tool whenever you need it. The habit will become easier and more natural the more you do it. Realise that by developing this new behaviour you are looking after your mental and physical health and also improving your relationship with yourself and others.

Life In Lockdown Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk
A
s I write this it is difficult to know for how much longer lockdown is to continue. A phased return to the workplace in May or June could still leave significant numbers facing isolation, although it is hoped that by high summer there may be some respite, if only until the autumn. In terms of the impact of the pandemic on pet owners, there has been plenty of online information from the government and other reputable sources about managing pets as well as the important fact that pets can carry the virus on their fur and paws, making regular hand washing after contact with your pet a must. Fortunately, dog walking has been viewed as essential exercise and many will have benefitted from this, not least the dogs. However, peering into the future, two possible consequences of lockdown are of particular concern for behaviourists. The first is in igniting or augmenting separation issues in dogs, the second is the impact on socialisation of pups reaching key developmental windows just as lockdown started. It is not clear why some dogs are more prone to separation issues than are others. Please note, I use the qualifier ‘issue’ rather than ‘anxiety’. It is now thought that many separation problems can be the result of frustration and lack of separation training in puppyhood, rather than necessarily an anxiety disorder or some other pathology- although these clearly exist too. What we do know is that even dogs who have learned to cope with being left for hours at a time can quickly sensitise to separation again if the family/owners suddenly start to stay at home for extended periods. This is a common occurrence at Christmas time when having enjoyed constant companionship for a few weeks the dog ‘objects’ to his owners returning to work. At such times owners can make the mistake of assuming that because the dog copes with sleeping downstairs alone at night, it knows and understands how to be alone. For those continuing with varying degrees ofPhoto: isolation is to ensure your dog Simon the Lunnbest / Greatadvice North Woods has ‘alone’ time, even if you are in the house

with them. Go ahead and put them in another room, shut the door and limit access to the rest of the family. Make sure some of the alone time involves you leaving the house altogether; when you go for essential shopping is one opportunity but do vary the times of day if you can. The dog needs to hear that front door shut and other family members should also go into another room and separate from the dog. If your dog has a meltdown then don’t panic but you will have to revisit basic separation training and build up again. Trainers and behaviourists will be happy to help if you get stuck. Fortunately, separation training lends itself to consultation by remote. For puppy owners who got caught up in lockdown as soon as their 8- week old pup arrived you will be aware of the challenges that face you in terms of socialisation. However, try not to worry. Although not ideal, there is good research to indicate that pups of a sound underlying temperament can still recover from lack of socialisation, even if they were brought up in a shed! This is not to say you will not have to work much harder, just that all is not lost. However, please research what you need to do and ask for help from trainers and behaviourists.

Local Fashion Designer Makes Happy® Face Covers Karen Arthur is a 58 year old women’s bespoke fashion designer and sewing tutor. She works primarily with ankara and African printed fabrics. With normal client meetings on hold until the lockdown is over and her airbnb guests cancelled overnight, Karen found income ceased suddenly. Luckily she transported her sewing machine and some fabric from her Catford studio to her home in Forest Hill just before lockdown was announced. The first thing Karen made was a face cover for herself out of leftover fabric she loves and posted a photo on twitter. Now she is making wear your happy® face covers daily for a client base that shows no signs of abating... especially since the Mayor of London endorsed wearing face coverings as an extra layer of protection recently. Karen says “Sewing face covers is saving my sanity and giving me an added purpose during lockdown. Not to mention giving me back some control over my finances and security for my family.” 07930 867826

Crofton Books
The SE22 Piano School The SE22 Piano School has adapted to lockdown by offering online piano lessons for all of our students that used to come to our business premises just off Lordship Lane. I trialled out online lessons with my students a week before the lockdown announcement which enabled my team of teachers to have a system in place that would work as soon as we had to close the doors on our shop. In addition to teaching piano, I also teach online fermentation workshops where I show people how to make kimchi, sauerkraut and kombucha. I have been doing these online via Zoom and all profits go to my chosen local charity which is Westminster House Youth Club in Nunhead. You can find out more about this on my Instagram page: @southlondonferments. Lorraine Liyanage | www.se22piano.co.uk
Jason Shelley from Crofton Books says: “We are trying our best to stay open *safely* through Covid, opening limited hours from Wednesday to Saturday each week with two people max in at a time. We offer an appointment service whereby individuals can enter during a fixed timeframe and I can close the doors (and discuss book choices, books etc, at a distance). Some locals have offered to home deliver, for people in isolation. We have delivered books for free helped by locals who are Kei (who fortunately has a motorcycle), a retired headmistress, Edwin an Australian teaching assistant, Annie, a writer in Honor Oak and James, an urban planner who lives in Crofton Park. Artists Kathryn Maple and Alison Boult, who are neighbours to the bookshop offer me tea in a flask and now we are collaborating on some work to exhibit.” @croftonbooks | 07572 869750 Remember to check out our website and social media channels for new stories every day. @AroundDulwich.

Business Focus in Lockdown
We caught up with one of our lovely clients, John from Alexandra Nurseries
A
t Alexandra Nurseries in Penge we are proud of our place in the community and delighted to find people feel the same. Our existing customers, neighbours, friends and newcomers have been keen to support us with kind words and custom! Of course this would be one of the peak times in our industry and it has hit us all hard, including our loyal growers, nurseries and suppliers. We have found the relationships built from 8 years of trade; of trust, loyalty and flexibility - both ways around - have kept us in good stead. Small independents have been able to suddenly downsize, re think how to operate and market and between us we are just about keeping each other going. Moving into ‘Amazon’ territory has been very challenging especially for a small shop with no existing online sales operation! We have all become perhaps too familiar with a click and collect climate and expect our stuff tomorrow! We have one person and one phone-line, one person on admin and email and a very talented instagrammer! With over 100 queries a day on those three platforms it’s been fun! So to all your readers— so sorry if we didn’t return your call, you couldn’t get through, or we lost you somehow - please forgive that and return for excellent cake and coffee and browse the lovely vintage garden things and quality plants soon . We thank too our lovely loyal furloughed team, who have been patient and trusted us as we work through the uncertainty. Being partly family run has been important giving an incentive to adapt and proceed beyond a straight business ethic, and the directors of the company have been working flat out to keep on top of everything. Our 8th birthday this week would have been our opportunity to greet you all with tea and cake. Watch out for the celebrations next year! Being a small business has allowed us to remain true to our values and, while we are not perfect, we rejoice in that. We are a creative

company made up of different personalities and skill sets, and in the current context this has meant we have the ability to adapt. We are fortunate to be a garden centre as the demand for our products remains strong, It has been satisfying to help people enjoy Spring, get into their gardens, connect with loved ones from a distance - they’ve been sending plants seeds soap and vouchers! Coronavirus: Five Commonly Asked Financial Questions
takers should consider investing short term funds. Assuming this pandemic doesn’t last forever, those looking to set aside money for the long term would be taking advantage of depressed stock prices and could see long term rewards as a result. Just be prepared for a very bumpy ride at the start of your journey.
With so many people dying every day, the biggest priority for anyone living in the UK should be keeping themselves and their families safe. As I write, we still haven’t reached the peak and the daily deaths being reported is sad, alarming and depressing. Britons are also looking for help with their finances in record numbers as the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown of the country sees huge numbers of people furloughed or made redundant, and 1.4 million people turning to Universal Credit. These certainly are worrying times and people are looking for answers to their burning questions. We looked at five of the most commonly asked financial questions, and our answers to them.
3) Will taking a break from my mortgage or credit card repayments affect my credit?
1) Should I move my stocks and shares investments onto Cash? Unfortunately, this is never a simple yes or no answer but dependent on your time horizon and attitude to risk. What is certain is that moving your money into cash after a market fall would crystallise your losses and give you little or no chance of getting your money back when the market returned. Only cash in your investments if you have no other choice. We all know that the stock market is no place for short term savings. If, however your investment is for the long term, such as retirement, the wisdom would be to stay invested until the world returned to normal and the market recovered.
2) Is this a good time to invest in the stock market? The FTSE, the UK’s market of stocks and shares is the lowest it has been for five years. This presents an opportunity for anyone lucky enough to have cash to invest for the long term. I’ll add the caveat that the market is extremely volatile – we have seen market swings up or down of up to 5% in a day! With such volatility, only the very bravest risk 30 | SE23 - May 2020
Credit reference agencies have confirmed that taking a repayment break should not affect your credit file if a) the payment break was pre-arranged with your lender or credit card company and b) if you were up to date with your repayments on your mortgage or loan at the time of applying for the break. The key is in arranging facilities before getting into trouble. If the payment break was for three months for example, and you needed more time, ensure you contact your lender before the three months break period was over. As with all credit, breaking whatever had been agreed would have negative consequences.
4) I’m struggling to pay my utility bills & council tax. Is there help available? If you're struggling to pay your council tax, contact your council and discuss your options with them. With payments for a gas, electric or water bill, contact your supplier to let them know before you get into serious arrears. They'll discuss your options with you. There are also other sources of help available such as grants and financial assistance schemes that could help you if you're struggling to pay your energy bills. It's important to contact your suppliers if you're struggling, as gas, electricity and water bills are priority payments and your provider could cut your supply off.
5) What lessons can we learn from this? As a financial adviser, the first and most important lesson I have learned from this crisis is how important it is to have a rainy-day fund available. Rainy day money would mean a sum of money that could keep you and your family going for six months. Our “rainy day” is here. Let’s just hope it doesn’t last too long.

VE Day - Stay at Home Victory Party Ideas
When VE Day dawns on 8th May 2020 it will be 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe. Years of carnage and destruction had come to an end and millions of people took to the streets and pubs to celebrate peace, mourn their loved-ones and to hope for the future, but not forgetting those still in conflict until 15th August when it was announced that Japan had surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, effectively ending World War II. The 75th anniversary will provide our nation, and our friends around the world, with an opportunity to reflect on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of people from all walks of life who saw us through this dark and terrifying period. To commemorate this important time a three-day international celebration had been organised to take place from 8th May to 10th May 2020. Unfortunately, due to the terrible Coronavirus emergency and consequent Government guidance the majority of these celebrations have either had to be cancelled or postponed. It is hoped that events can be moved to the weekend of 15th – 16th August when we will be able to celebrate VE Day and VJ Day, both momentous points in our history, but this has yet to be confirmed. However, in true British spirit, the current lockdown situation does not stop us from making our own victory party celebrations at home to mark this momentous occasion. The following pages will help you put together your own celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

The Last Word – Amanda Pearce via SE23 Mums, and some of the kind businesses in the area, our family were supported through the hardest time of our lives. This raffle is my opportunity to say thank you and repay that spirit to the community as a whole.
The most famous person you’ve met? Dame Emma Kirkby: I was incredibly lucky to be selected to sing in a masterclass for her whilst studying music at the University of Melbourne. She is one of my lifelong music idols.
Where are you to be found on Saturday? Typically close to home, surrounded by crochet hooks and balls of yarn, working on any current orders.
What is your favourite place to eat? With two young children, we rely on the takeaway experience for a special evening meal. Big Cheeks Thai and Babur To Go are two favourites, and have been getting us through lockdown with a smile. I’m Amanda Pearce, Forest Hill resident, mum to two boys, coffee addict, crocheter, classically trained soprano, and Australian export. I’m one half of the duo behind The Great Big SE4 and SE23 Raffle, and passionate about indie businesses and shopping small.
How long have you lived in the area? I’ve been a Forest Hill local for nearly 7.5 years, arriving in December 2012.
What brought you here? The offer of a spare room, whilst I found my feet in freezing London after moving from Australia. I loved the feel of the area so much that I found a room to rent, and never left!
What has changed most during that time? The shop-fronts have certainly changed! There’s always a tug of sadness that the Laundromat was replaced by an estate agent, but it’s been great to see some of the diversity opening up along Dartmouth Road and how well it’s been received.
What do you most value about the area? The wonderful sense of community, and community spirit. Our youngest child suffers from an undiagnosed neurological condition and was extremely unwell at birth, requiring aggressive resuscitation, induced hypothermia, and a 10-week NICU stay. Thanks to a group of selfless women, 44 | SE23 - May 2020
Coffee or tea? Where? Coffee. Always. St David Coffee House is my second home, preferably accompanied by one of Sian’s baked creations, or the perfect poached egg.
Cafe, pub or bar? Café! We are truly spoiled for excellent café options in SE London, and I struggle to say no to a coffee.
Where’s your favourite place to walk? It may be clichéd, but I never tire of taking a spin around the Horniman Gardens and checking out our view of the city. Dulwich Wood is another lovely walk, in any season.
If money was no object… I’d buy a house in Forest Hill, make time for my music again, and pour the rest into finding a diagnosis and support for our little one’s medical condition.
My perfect holiday.. Anywhere where we can be a family, especially after our last 12 months. I’m a complete Francophile and have a love affair with Paris, but the longer I live in the UK, the more it’s simply going home to my loved ones in Australia, eating at all my favourite places in Melbourne, and breathing in the gum trees. @bigseraffle

The Last Word – Nicola Johnson I’m Nicola Johnson, a lawyer and mum of 2 teens living in Honor Oak. I’m currently running The Great Big SE4 & SE23 Raffle with Amanda Pearce, another local mum who I originally got to know through Twitter and the SE23 Mums Facebook group. We were inspired to start the raffle, which aims to support local independent businesses during the Covid-19 crisis, by Victoria Rennison’s efforts in East Dulwich, and I knew that Amanda would be the perfect person to partner with to make an SE4/ SE23 raffle a success.
How long have you lived in the area? I moved to Honor Oak from East Dulwich on New Year’s Eve 2001, whilst pregnant with my first child. I was a bit nervous about making the short move from an area I loved to one that I wasn’t at all familiar with (in those days pre-Overground, most people hadn’t heard of Honor Oak!), but we saw the potential and, of course, could get more space for the money as we were starting a new family.
What has changed most during that time? When we first moved to the area, there were very few places to eat out apart from Babur and a couple of “greasy spoons”. Don’t get me wrong, we love both, but we would often find ourselves heading back to East Dulwich at the weekends if we fancied something a little different. However, over recent years we’ve seen a lot of new food businesses establish themselves in Honor Oak that cater for most of our cravings, so there’s now little reason to leave the hood!
Your favourite place for a night out?
What do you most value about the area
I don’t drink coffee, so it’s tea all the way for me! I do feel that tea lovers are often overlooked, but I love the selection at Rise Café in Honor Oak – they serve whole leaf, single origin teas from Zigzag, which are natural botanical infusions using real fruit pieces, whole flowers, natural herbs and nothing else.
It has to be the green spaces and the incredible views over London! We’re very lucky to have One Tree Hill and Blythe Hill Fields on our doorstep and I’ll often take a walk up to both, either alone or with the family, to take in the vista and recharge.
What one thing would you change? We are partial to the odd burrito or taco, so would love to see a Mexican food offering in the area!
The one thing you couldn’t do without? My bike! Over the last year I’ve really tried to cut back on my car use and try to cycle wherever I can. As well as improving my fitness and being environmentally friendly, it’s also allowed me to discover so many parts of SE London that had previously passed me by!
Only a few years ago, I would never have dreamed of staying local for a top night out, but these days there are plenty of reasons to stay in the hood! I love the eclectic Ninth Life in Catford for Saturday night dancing, the newly refurbished Fellowship and Star in Bellingham hosts some banging DJ nights and I love my Tuesday night comedy from Laugh Train Home at The Honor Oak Pub.
Coffee or tea? Where?
The best kept secret... It’s not quite Honor Oak, but in neighbouring Crofton Park there’s a fantastic restaurant called The Blue Room, which pops up in someone’s front room on Friday and Saturday nights! The cooking, atmosphere and service is top notch, and it’s incredibly good value given the quality and quantity of the food on offer. But sssshhh, don’t tell anyone! @bigseraffle
