Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw

Winter Window Boxes Now’s the time to smarten up window boxes for the winter season. Here’s how.

Make A Plan A visit to your local garden centre is a great way to get inspiration, but do some planning first. Measure your container for a rough idea of how many plants to buy. And think about the style and colour of your house - exterior and interior - you might fall for an orange plant, but will it clash from inside your sitting room?

Thrillers, Spillers, Fillers You could block plant a simple row of white cyclamen or dusky pink heather– contemporary and stylish. But for more variety, it’s useful to think ‘thrillers’, tall evergreen plants for structure, ‘spillers’ like ivy to trail down containers and ‘fillers’, for the gaps. Compact evergreen shrubs such as pretty small-leaved hebes make good structural ‘thrillers’ as does Skimmia x confusa ‘Kew Green’ – go for symmetry here, one or three. For something bright and festive Skimmia japonica ‘Nymans’ has jolly red berries, Gaultheria Procumbens pink ones and Solanum Capsicastrum has cheery orange fruit like tiny clementines. Silvery Calocephalus brownii (Silver Bush) is also very Christmassy – especially teamed with red cyclamen. Evergreen ferns such as asplenium (hart’s tongue) or ornamental grasses such as coppery Anemanthele lessoniana (Pheasant’s grass) provide interesting form and leaf texture. As an alternative to classic ivy, my favourite ‘spiller’ is Muehlenbeckia complexa – maidenhair vine, with an abundance of springy burgundy stems lined with fresh green round leaves. Otherwise soft silvery leaved Helichrysum petiolare looks good with whites purples and pinks. If you want colour, use fillers such as winter flowering viola or pansies – which come in everything from dark purple to orange and will keep flowering through the winter if deadheaded. Dusky pink or white hellebores such as Heleborus niger look great and I love the silvery foliage of H. ‘Silver Dollar’. For bigger containers heucheras, with their large handsome evergreen leaves in everything 12 | SE23 - November 2018

from rich plum to lime or orange brighten up a winter day. The dramatic purple variety ‘Obsidian’ complements cool steely blue Festuca glauca for a smart window box combo. And for a spring surprise, underplant the whole box with bulbs such as dainty Iris reticulate, crocus, daffodils an muscari.

Design As a rule, restricting your colours to two or three will avoid your planter looking like a fruit salad as a design teacher once described it. The same goes for plant varieties – ideally go for plants that have similarities, adding an element of contrast for interest. But whether you’re drawn to a simple colour scheme of white and green or something more exuberant, it’s all a matter of personal choice. The best way of getting combinations you like is to put them together at the garden centre and keep changing them until you’re happy. After all, it’s only temporary, so you can afford to be a bit experimental.

Practicalities When you get your plants come, it’s a good idea to empty old compost and start again. Cover drainage holes with broken terracotta pots or grit. Arrange the plants and fill the gaps with potting compost – adding grit if the plants need good drainage, firm down and water. Janine Winlaw - Writer & Gardener Follow me on instagram @janinewinlaw

Food & Drink with Suzanne James

Easy Vegan Gluten-Free Brownies Makes 9 Brownies In October we cooked for a wonderful Bride and Groom at a wedding that was attended by Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Greg Wise, Imelda Staunton, Jim Carter, Derek Jacobi, Ben Elton and many more. To accommodate quite a few special diets we created this wonderful Gluten Free Vegan Brownie! Ingredients • 2 batches of flax eggs (2 tbsp (14g) of flaxseed meal + 5 tbsp (75ml) of water) • Half a cup of melted coconut oil • Half a cup of coconut sugar • Quarter of a cup of maple syrup (or agave nectar) • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • Three quarters of a teaspoon of baking powder • Quarter teaspoon sea salt • Half cup unsweetened cocoa powder • Three quarters of a cup of Gluten Free Oat Flour • Quarter cup of corn meal • One third of a cup of pecans or walnuts (optional) • One third of a cup of vegan chocolate chips (optional) Method • First preheat the oven to 3500F (1760C) and lightly grease an 8”x8” baking dish with coconut oil, then line with parchment paper • Prepare flax eggs in a small mixing bowl. • In a large mixing bowl add melted coconut oil, coconut sugar, maple syrup and vanilla extract. Whisk thoroughly to combine and start dissolving the coconut sugar. • Add flax eggs and whisk once more until combined. Then add baking powder, sea salt, and cocoa power and whisk. • Add gluten-free oat flour and corn meal and fold with a spatula until just mixed. Then add desired add-ins (optional), such as vegan chocolate chips or nuts. • Add the batter to the prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer with a rubber spatula. Add a few additional toppings if desired, such as chocolate chips and nuts (optional). 14 | SE23 - November 2018

• Bake for 17-22 minutes, or until the edges appear dry and slightly fluffy and the center is no longer wet or sticky. • Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes, preferably 45 minutes - 1 hour (the longer they cool, the less tender they will be). Then gently lift out of pan and use a sharp knife to cut into desired number of squares (I woud suggest 9). • These are delicious on their own, but we served it with poached pear, coconut cream and cinnamon. For an easy option go for Ice Cream or Whipped Cream! • Completely cooled leftovers don’t tend to hang around for long, but will last a few days at room temperature in an airtight container or in the freezer up to 1 month.

Financial Matters with Akwasi Duodu

Why it is important to be financially literate

O

ne of life’s biggest tragedies for me is the that we are not taught financial literacy in schools. Look at the maths curriculum of a 15-year-old and you’ll find them involved in complex calculations including Pythagoras theorem and intricate algebraic equations. All very clever. But what is the point of being able to measure the distance between two points on a quadrilateral if you have no idea what the words ‘subject to status’ mean? Finding x in a bewildering equation full of numbers, letters, fractions and brackets can be immensely satisfying but what’s the use of such a skill of you have no idea what represents a decent interest rate on a loan versus a complete rip-off?

The Basics Children who are lucky enough to have parents who include them in discussions relating to the financial affairs of the family have a clear head start. But this is all too uncommon. Most children grow up in the dark, especially where money is a bit of a taboo subject. They leave home clueless. Most youngsters will start to learn about money if they pay for their tuition or accommodation with a student loan. Even then, it’s not that straightforward. For a start, not many students bother checking their student loan statement. Because there is no immediate need to repay the loan why bother checking the balance? There is so much other stuff to do. The student loan system is cumbersome. Statements aren’t sent automatically so to check your balance, you’d need to log in and use the balance calculator. Long. Especially when there are lectures and parties to think about. These five topics would be on my shortlist. Budgeting: This is where every financial novice should begin. By managing what’s coming in vs what’s going out, by controlling your spending, you can keep a tight rein on your finances and ensure you don’t get into financial trouble. What’s more, if there was a recognisable surplus, you could start saving. 24 | SE23 - November 2018

The impact of interest: Understanding debit and credit interest is next. I heard of a student who considered borrowing money for a car from payday loan company simply because he knew no better. The interest rate was over 1,000%! The shrewd would seek high credit interest on their savings and look for low interest rates when they needed to borrow. The time value of money: Little lessons like packing your own lunch instead of buying it from M&S could make a massive difference to your finances. An M&S lunch could cost £6.00 a day for example, whereas making your own could cost as little as £1.50. A saving of £4.50 per day. Nothing when it’s put like that. But that’s a saving of £90 per month or £4,320 over a 4-year university stint. Maintaining a decent credit record: Your credit history starts as soon as you open a bank account and doesn’t finish until you die. Lenders, bankers and employers will all judge you on your credit rating and one mistake could take 6 years or more to repair. Getting into good habits early on will save you a lot of heartache. Risk and reward: Understanding the differences between investing in cash assets such as bank accounts and investing in risk assets such as shares would be a valuable lesson and would prepare youngsters when they had to make decisions in the real world. Decisions like how to invest in their workplace pension, or how to save for a deposit for a property. There is no doubt that complex mathematical exercises have their place and are good for the brain. But not at the expense of simple common sense everyday knowledge to prevent you from being a sitting duck in the harsh real world of money. Has the time come to include financial literacy in the curriculum? I think so.

Saturday 24 November: Concordia’s Autumn Concert THE GLORY OF BAROQUE. All the magnificent music in Concordia’s autumn concert was composed within the span of only 20 years – in the astonishing flowering of European music in the early 18th century which we now call The Baroque. Our programme especially celebrates the trio of composers whose work defines this golden era: Vivaldi, Handel and Bach. Our centrepiece will be Vivaldi’s Gloria, almost a ‘lost’ masterpiece till the mid-20th century, but now one of the most popular and revered works in the canon of sacred music. The genius of Handel will be represented by two contrasting pieces: Zadok The Priest, which never fails to take the breath away with its sweep and majesty and Ode For the Birthday Of Queen Anne, a secular cantata, part of which was sung at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex this summer. Last, but not least, we are delighted to welcome back our special guests The South Circular Orchestra, who will perform the 2nd of Bach’s much-loved Brandenburg Concertos. The performance is at 7.30pm at All Saints’ Church, Lovelace Rd, SE21 8JY. Tickets £14 door, or £13 advance at www.concordiachamberchoir.co.uk. Concessions (students and those on means tested benefits) half price. Remember that feeling you get coming home from an amazing concert? Make a note in your diary now!

The Last Word – Joy Bradshaw The best meal I’ve ever had.. My Jamaican mum and dad with home cooked Sunday dinner… Which was a tradition to have rice and peas, with either chicken or curry goat, roast potatoes, salad and homemade coleslaw … followed by homemade mums apple crumble with custard or vanilla ice cream! Absolutely delicious… It brings back fond childhood memories… just the thought and smell of it.

Your favourite place to go for a drink? Brickfields Bar in Brockley, small and intimate.

The best kept secret... Dulwich Park, because of its peacefulness, it’s so pretty with all the flowers and the little lake...it has an area for everyone… you never feel as though its overcrowded. Hello my name's Joy Bradshaw, I run a hair salon in Brockley called First Glance with my brother Roan Bradshaw. It’s a small friendly family business. We do all aspects of hairdressing European, Mixed, Afro hair, male and female. This year we are celebrating 30 years in business!

How long have you lived in the area? I have lived here all my life... as my parents moved from the Brockley end of SE15 (Nunhead) to Forest Hill in the early 1960’s and I absolutely love it!! I think because its surrounded with a choice of parks and greenery; it makes a difference and it’s also so central. Luckily I know my lovely neighbours and they are all so friendly and we do the neighbourly thing to respect each other and look out for each other.

What do you most value about the area? I Just love the fact that it’s so accessible to the city and into town… the bus stop is not literally on my door step but within walking distance so I don’t hear the noise of the traffic, which is great!!… Having Honor Oak Park and Crofton Park train station within walking distance and now with the Overground is so great!! All means no driving needed or stressing about parking at the station… unless of course I am running late! Also I’m very fortunate to have nice neighbours in my street!

The most famous person you’ve met? Many, many years ago… coming out of a club called Stringfellows I saw George Michael and also met Ian wright during his Crystal Palace and Arsenal days. 32 | SE23 - November 2018

Where’s your favourite place to walk? Along the Southbank where you can discover the arts and culture of the various street acts..and if your tired sit and admire the river Thames… then get a bite to eat at Gabriel’s Wharf.

When I want to relax... I take a good book and go and have a conditioning treatment and a blow-dry at First Glance Hair Salon in Brockley as it always makes me feel better once my hairs done and relaxes me too. Or maybe a massage at ESPH in Lordship Lane, SE22.

What was the last thing you bought in your favourite shop? A long black jumper which also doubles up as a cape … its so lovely, as it can hide a multitude of sins as well as it can be dressed up or dressed down. It always looks nice, feels soft and warm, great to travel and also to go out in. Sadly this one off boutique closed down this year… we miss you ‘Sugar’, which was on Lordship Lane.

Best bargain you’ve ever landed.. Oh my goodness, years ago you could get a last minute holiday bargain on Teletext! Now I’m not so sure. Back then I managed to get a bargain going to Kenya for £199 and it was all inclusive. I even remember the hotel it was Southern Palms. It was such a lovely hotel and had wooden four-poster beds. It really was a great experience and holiday… coupled with great sunshine, beaches and safaris. www.1stglance.co.uk

What's On - November Thursday 29 November The Bigger Picture Presents: THE SQUARE @8pm Director: Ruben Östlund / 2017 Sweden / 151 mins / Cert: 15 Modern art and modern art curators – Pretentious? Silly? Up themselves? Divorced from real life? – and, as it turns out, able to be wonderfully satirised and pilloried. The Square (itself a new artwork in a modern art museum) punctures so many balloons, with Elizabeth Moss (it’s been a busy few years for her) as the journalist observer, and more than that as well. www.thebiggerpic.co.uk. THE IVY HOUSE 40 Stuart Road, SE15 3BE 020 7277 8233 | ivyhousenunhead.com Tickets £7 online at: www.wegottickets.com.

Friday 30 November: Chris Wood, Thom Ashworth, Elfin Bow Chris Wood is an uncompromising writer whose music reveals his love for the unofficial history of the English speaking people. With gentle intelligence he weaves the tradition with his own contemporary parables. Thom Ashworth is an English folksinger and bassist, playing both stripped down arrangements of British traditional songs and his own folk-inspired songs. Elfin Bow’s music has been described as pastoral psych-folk with an undercurrent of electronic ambience. Tickets £14/12 advance, £16/14 on the door. Door 7pm. Live music starts 8pm.
