Welcome to SE23 Where has this year gone too! It amazes me that I can be writing about Bonfire Night and Christmas already! Speaking of Bonfire Night, the wonderful display at Dulwich Sports Club (Saturday 4 November) has already sold out! Definitely one to plan in advance for. As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Dulwich. The events pages start on page 6. November is another packed month for events, so we have a fabulous seven pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. Descending from high points along the ridge of hills at Crystal Palace, Norwood and Sydenham, it comes together as a single stream at Thurlow Park, idles eastward through Dulwich and Herne Hill, heads north through Brixton, circumnavigates Kennington Oval and drops into the Thames at Vauxhall, covering a huge amount of territory in what is little more than an eight-mile course. Fabulous Ferns Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw

ith their elegant green, textural fronds, ferns are fantastic plants for adding a lushness to planting schemes, working particularly well in shady areas. They tend to fall into the following groups. The Dryopteris genus, or woodland ferns, are handsome ferns, tolerant of dryish shade. Dryopteris erythrosora is an attractive fern with semi-evergreen lime green, bronze-tinged leaves, while Dryopteris affinis ‘Cristata’ has upright fresh green leaves for most of the year. For height, look out for Dryopteris wallichiana which has upright bright green fronds of up to 90cm high, while Dryopteris filix femina is another nice large fern. The fronds on these two tend to break up over winter, but cutting them back will reveal fresh green growth for spring. Polystichum ferns have more intricate fronds. Polystichum setiferum is a useful and attractive evergreen fern that grows to around a metre high and is able to tolerate some sun. P. ‘Herrenhausen’ is slightly more delicate and lower growing. P. braunnii has lovely bright green leaves, while Polystichum munitum is a tall upright fern

that will make a statement throughout the year and grow in sun or shade. For more glossy texture, Asplenium scolopendrium, or hart’s tongue ferns, are useful evergreen ferns with large leathery leaves. These are happiest in deep shade. Polypodium vulgare is a tough little fern with shiny mid green leaves. A native of Britain, it tolerates most conditions, moist or dry, sun or shade and looks good colonising under deciduous trees. For something smaller still, try Blechnum spicant. At the other end of the spectrum, Osmunda regalis is a giant (2m) fern with bright green fronds in spring – it likes moisture so would be ideal in a bog garden. Finally, Dicksonia Antarctica, or tree fern, is great to add drama or a bit of exotic to your garden – but tends to need some winter protection. Ferns look wonderful en masse with other shade-tolerant perennials such as white astrantia, eurybia and anemones, creating a lush woodland feel. They also look when mixed up together so that you get a variety of different leaves.

hile results for The Hamlet as a whole remain hit and miss, there have at least been goals! Goals! And more goals! All thanks to the Women’s First XI and their rip-roaring autumn cup exploits. Over an eight-day period at the turn of last month Ryan Dempsey’s side beat Aylesford 6-1 away, before putting another six past Barking in the FA Cup. In between was a 9-1 drubbing of Cheshunt, away in the Isthmian League Cup. That’s 21 spicy goals - scored by ten different players - and quite some harvest! Hats off to the scorers and to the whole squad. Recent winning form, and a thrilling late penalty winner against Saltdean, has also seen our women’s side climb up the league, so hopes are high for November. First up, though, is more cup action as we host Eastbourne United on Sunday 5th in the League Cup. After that it’s Millwall Lionesses away in the league on the 19th. Progress on three cup fronts means the women may have other fixtures coming up, so keep an eye out for those and don’t miss more glorious goal action. Meanwhile the men’s home November schedule sees the visit of Margate on the 11th and Folkestone Invicta on the 18th, giving us tantalising thoughts of seaside returns to come. On the road, there’s a trip to Kingstonian on Wednesday 1st for the third round of the League Cup; then on to Haringey Borough on the 4th and Cray

In fact it’s party time as fans’ favourite, legendary goalkeeper Preston Edwards is back at the club. On his delight at returning to Dulwich, Preston said “It’s not just about the football. It’s the camaraderie, the community and the shared passion for the game with the supporters.” Cue a chorus of No Preston, no party! Strong Social Relationships: The New Frontier Of Wellbeing In the last few months, I have been thinking a lot about the power of social connectedness for health span. And I wanted to share my own story with you about how I came to recognise its importance of building strong social relationships.

Moments Of Connection A couple of years ago I had everything dialled in. I slept over 8 hours almost every night; I only ate sweet treats 3 times a week. I did a daily 10 min meditation and exercised 5 times a week. My recovery was spot-on, and I had a fortnightly massage. I was crushing it. And yet something felt off. I just wasn’t feeling as happy as I thought I should. One morning I was walking in my local woods with my dog, Kami. We walked past a family, with two toddlers, who approached Kami wanting to stroke her. Having checked with their parents, I asked the kids if they’d like to give Kami a treat. I showed them how to feed her by holding out my flat palm to her mouth, and then placed little chicken treats in their hands. One by one they both held out their little hands and she gently took the treat. The kids looked up at me and joy flooded their faces, and they stroked Kami again before rushing back to tell their parents what they’d done. The look of joy on their faces stayed with me for the rest of the walk. Seeing their expressions and the brief eye contact was a warming feeling. That little spark of connection between me and them, and them and Kami was a beautiful moment. That chance meeting was an epiphany of sorts for me. I realised this is what was missing; moments of connection like this one. As a result, I vowed to myself to notice and appreciate these opportunities more. The rest of the stuff is important, but real human connection is what matters. 16 | SE23 - November 2023

How to protect yourself from scams and scammers Many of us believe that we are too experienced to be scammed. The ugly truth is that nearly 45% of all UK crime committed in 2022 against individuals was fraud through scamming. Scammers are becoming cleverer and more sophisticated, and scams are on the increase. The consequences are horrendous for the victim, and some have been scarred for life. Ironically, many scammers use the fact that fraud is on the increase to gain trust and scam people. Many will call you to inform you that you might have been scammed, using this strategy to obtain valuable information from you.

Within a few months, Paul had £57,000 in his account, a profit of over £50,000. He decided to cash in some of his profits.

A Real Life Story

Too good to be true?

Paul was contacted on the phone by a professional sounding online crypto trader. His mate John had apparently recommended him, but when Paul asked which John it was, the trader was vague. Paul happened to know a guy called John (who doesn’t?), and thought it might be him, so allowed the conversation to continue. The trader said his firm were offering great real-time returns and could turn £500 into £5,000 quickly and easily. He seemed to really know his stuff, mentioning all the various crypto currencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum which Paul had heard of and others he hadn’t. Returns were guaranteed with a lock-in mechanism which prevented losses. All Paul needed to do was register, download the app and they could start trading crypto on his behalf. Their fee was only10% of Paul’s profits, so he had nothing to lose.

This is when the problems started. First, all communication was via a robot on the app. The app said he’d have to pay the 10% fee on everything he’d made prior to making a withdrawal. This was over £5,000. So, Paul paid it from his personal savings. As soon as he’d done that, the app failed. There was no support contact number, and no one answered his numerous complaint emails to the no-reply address. The company seemed to have vanished into thin air. Paul typed the name of the company into Google and could see that other people had been scammed in the same way by the same company. He was too embarrassed to tell his wife. That wasn’t the end of it. Paul soon started getting invoices for online purchase he hadn’t made. The scammers had sold his personal information not parties using his details to open online shopping accounts. It ruined his credit and cost him a lot of aggro.

They prey on greed Paul had heard stories from friends about how much money could be made in crypto so decided to go ahead. He was emailed a link from a no-reply address to download an app, did so, registered with all his personal information and invested £500. It all looked legit. Paul checked the app daily and could see activity with numbers rising and falling, but didn’t understand it. Within a week his “portfolio” was worth £4,000 so he decided to invest a further £1,000. The value of his portfolio kept going up magically, bucking the trend of all the markets. 20 | SE23 - November 2023

Signs that this was a scam The fact that Paul was called out of the blue was a red flag, even though he had cleverly been recommended by “John”. The fact that he had to pay fees before he could access his money was another one, as was the offer of high guaranteed returns. Paul should have hung up on the caller and done his own research to determine whether the company was genuine. He should also have insisted on a call back number and tested it. I think he may have learned his lesson, but the damage has been done.

ogs have been developed over thousands of years to alert us to potential intruders or threats to our territory. In the modern age this most often translates as the dog reacting to any activity at the front door. Many owners have a dog that will bark and excitedly jump all over visitors, others have the sort of dog that goes ballistic when they so much as hear the gate squeak and get so worked up there is a danger they may bite. These are the dogs that may intimidate the postman and shred letters as they emerge through the letterbox. The majority of dogs will always bark to let you know someone is there, the key lies in limiting the duration of the barking and teach the dog what to do next. Most dogs only bark when their owner or caretaker is home. Some dogs are genuinely territorial and will bark, even if home alone, to warn potential intruders they are prepared to take action. Most pet dogs are not truly territorial and dogs that bark when home alone should be screened for separation issues. At one end of the spectrum you have guard breeds (often territorial) and there is a good argument to say such types of dogs are high risk in a densely populated urban environment. These dogs are hardwired to monitor differences in the environment and to take action, should they feel it necessary. True guard breeds can be a tall order and a huge responsibility if you live in the city. Many pet dogs are of the aloof, watch-dog variety. They are not true guard dogs but may not instantly warm to strangers and are more sensitive to environmental changes and quick to sound the alarm. Dogs like this need to be trained early around the front door, to understand what is normal (non-threatening) and what to do when a visitor arrives. At the other end of the spectrum, breeds like the Labrador tend to be super social. They can get worked up at the prospect of visitor arrival because they love meeting everyone. However, having a large Labrador jumping and clawing at you, even if they are simply happy to see you, is not fun and may still result in injury. Excitable nipping and mouthing of the “I love you so much I could eat you”variety is also something I see. The key to training door manners lies in

understanding the type of dog you have; overfriendly, aloof watchdog or slightly fearful, guard dog or territorial? Of course, there are variations and I see Labradors that dislike new people as well as German Shepherds that are not ‘guardy’ at all. If you own an aloof or fearful dog then I generally suggest you spend some time desensitising them to various front door activity sounds, so they begin to accept them as normal and non-threatening. I also advise screening windows, so the dog cannot see comings and goings in the street. These are the dogs I teach to move away from the door and to go to a spot and remain there while the owner handles visitors or deliveries. Obviously, this takes time and I would recommend the help of a professional trainer or behaviourist, to devise a plan that is tailored for you. Where dogs are sociable but get too excitable on hearing front door activity, I also suggest desensitisation and counter-conditioning. However, very often these dogs can also be taught to recall to you, after they start barking. They learn to calmly accompany you to the door and hold a sit or down, while the door is opened, and visitor invited in. In all cases a strong ‘leave’ cue is desirable. I also recommend the help of a behaviourist if your dog seems fearful or aggressive.

The Last Word with Tutku Barbaros What is your favourite place to eat? Tricky question because there’s so many good places. Amrutha is brilliant - their feasting menu is everything! I love Babur too.

Coffee or tea? Where? Both! My coffee order is usually a mocha. I’m a big fan of Canvas and Cream who serve their tea in a polka dot teapots. It’s such a charming and fun space as well, I’m so excited to be hosting my creative writing workshops there.

The best kept secret The Christmas decoration game is unparalleled in HOP. If you look closely at the Christmas Tree by the station, there's always a framed picture of Pat Butcher. And there’s The Christmas House (if you know, you know!) - there was even fake snow last year! It’s magical and magic is what we need.

When I want to relax…

Tutku is a local writer, working across many forms. Her debut short story collection All The Women She Knows will be out in February. She is also an alumna of the Royal Court Writers Programme. Her creative writing workshops “Write With Tuts” happen across the area and invite writers and nonwriters alike to indulge their creativity in unique, relaxed settings.

What do you most value about the area? The people! Everyone feels a genuine enthusiasm for the area. My mum owns Barbaros Hair Salon so we’ve been here many years and I’ve never seen that energy waiver. Last Christmas we made a toiletries donation box for the foodbank - the generosity of donations we received was incredible! It’s nice to be somewhere where people care about looking out for each other.

The one thing you couldn’t do without? The green spaces! I go for many walks in order to offset my screen time so I feel lucky to be in an area where there’s so many outdoors spaces. My favourite is a proper stomp around Beckenham Place Park. 32 | SE23 - November 2023

I love the quiet calm of art exhibitions and then browsing the gift shop for ages - either buying nothing or buying even more books. Then meeting friends for a cackle later.

What is your favourite shop? My sweet tooth is unruly so I’m most likely to be buying treats from Sundae. I’m either a scoop of vegan dark choc or a peanut butter and salted caramel milkshake girlie.

The book I’m reading at the moment What She’s Having: Stories of Women and Food. It’s printed by my publishers Dear Damsels (who are independent and dedicated to running work by women). It’s 16 different pieces by sixteen writers (one of which is me). Every time I pick it up it’s like a massive comforting hug, there are so many unique voices on each page and each piece is totally different, I feel really lucky to be alongside so much talent.
