T
he worst mistake anyone can make at any domestic drinks party is to try to run a professional cocktail bar. Spirits will be used at different rates making it almost impossible to meet your guests’ requests and you will spend all night mixing and shaking, if not running to the shops. Instead invite friends over and serve a particular pre-planned cocktail, together with several choices for non-drinkers, they are often forgotten. One drink which is is almost impossible to get wrong is the ever so glamorous Negroni. Finding myself lucky enough to be seated very recently in the very bar were the drink was invented I decided, with its orangery hue, that this was the perfect autumnal aperitif and my cocktail of choice for the coming months. Count Camillo Luigi Manfredo Maria Negroni was born in Florence in 1868, he was a maverick nobleman who swapped the rolling hills of Tuscany for the barren landscape of the Wild West, where he lived the horse-back cowboy life. Presumably his drinking habits became hardened by the extreme frontier life and upon returning to Florence in 1919 he asked Fosco Scarselli, bartender at Café Casoni, to swap the soda water in his favourite Americano (a bitter Italian aperitif mixed with sweet vermouth and a splash of soda) for gin. A slice of orange, rather than lemon, was added and voila - the Negroni was born. The drink quickly became very popular, although due to the prohibition it would take over ten years for it to catch on in the US. America, and New York in particular, was the cradle of cocktail society; bartenders would vie to have their blend acknowledged as the definitive drink and recipes would be carefully catalogued. As the Negroni was invented overseas and at a time when drinking was outlawed in the US its history by the time it was adopted as a cocktail hour staple was a little cloudy. Indeed, some experts would disagree with my versions of events, however, from the evidence they seem the most likely and certainly the most engaging.
12 | SE23 - October 2016
Now named the Giacosa Café, the former Café Casoni is also sometimes referred called the Café Cavalli, due to its famous Florentine fashion designer owner and his eponymous flagship boutique located next door. Like the fashion of Pucci and Gucci, despite being something that I will always associate with Florence, The Negroni can be given the SE London treatment with the inclusion of Little Bird Gin, which is distilled in Peckham Rye. This is a drink you can easily pre -mix In advance of your party and pour as your guest arrive, remember the slice of orange and lots of chunky ice in a whiskey tumbler or old-fashioned. To make the perfect Negroni; one-part Little Bird Gin, one part Cinzano Rosso and one part Campari.

Summer in the city with views across London
I
t seems that from almost anywhere in southeast London the Shard can be seen. As a building it has polarised opinion-does it add to our capital’s skyline and/or streetscape, or is it a monster of cheap design? Like a friend of mine who works in Guys Tower as the Shard now blocks her much loved view, I loathed it at first, but when walking down Tooley Street to City Hall a few years ago, I caught sight of it between two buildings in More London and I was transfixed and so my Love the Shard stance was born. With that thought, I took my sister and her partner on a visit for her 60th birthday where using the supplied telescopes we were able to view close up the balcony of her flat in East London. I have since taken advantage of this summer’s wonderful late August weather to visit our capital’s buildings which offer free views of London. Starting with the new wing of the Tate Britain-having first been awed by the Georgia O’Keefe exhibition-we made our way to the 10th floor for a 360’ view. Here we could view the Thames both East and West and follow the Millennium Bridge as it led the way to St. Paul’s Cathedral surrounded by the much taller constructions built since, from the NatWest Tower (who remembers when that was the tallest building in London?) to the Sky Garden at 20 Fenchurch Street. After we took in the views across the north of London, we looked south towards Kent and I could hear a small voice near me cry “Look Mum, Paris!” to his mother as he understandably mistook the Crystal Palace transmitter for the Eiffel Tower. London’s highest public garden was our next port of call. Here, 155 metres up on the 35th floor of 20 Fenchurch Street is a large glass dome that spans three storeys and houses the Sky Garden. This venue is amazing, wonderful to walk in and around and the observation decks and open-air terraces that surround it offer even more magnificent 360’ views. For me this was comparing the past and the present. I was born in
22 | SE23 - October 2016
East London, grew up in different parts of the city before eventually residing in SE23. (NB not many Londoners cross the Thames in either direction to live-in fact crossing it at all makes some Londoners very nervous!) I can recall visiting both the top of St. Paul’s and the Monument in the 60s when they were amongst the highest view points and being impressed by the size and shape of the city that I lived in. The views from the Sky Garden showed me how much our city has changed since then, and although some of these newer, taller buildings may not add much architecturally to it, they offer up great opportunities to see all of London from a wonderful perspective. I am very glad that I am not frightened of heights and could thoroughly enjoy the experience. Despite appreciating those buildings’ ever changing panorama of our city, I still don’t think that they can beat London as seen spread out from the Horniman Museum and Gardens bandstand. It’s good to be home.

Prehistoric Garden
Memorial. A Tribute to Taxidermy
Look back in time with our Prehistoric Garden, which features ‘living fossils’ – plant and tree species which date back to the time of the dinosaurs. A redwood and a yew tree tower above tree ferns, cycads and ginkgos and even an amazing Wollemi pine, thought to be extinct until 1994. The garden, at the highest point of the Horniman estate, is also home to a velociraptor sculpture, keeping a prehistoric watchful eye on the modern London skyline.

Financial Matters
What is your magic number?
H
ow much money do I need to retire?” is quite possibly the most common question I am asked by clients. Need? What exactly does “need” mean? By “need” do people mean the bare essentials such as heating, council tax and beans on toast on the table? Or does “need” mean more than that? Everyone will have a different definition of need in retirement, but the key point is that beginning this planning phase is some of the most important work I do. Let me take you through a little thought exercise to get you thinking about how much you might need. Before you do so, try and visualise retirement. You’ll have stopped working. You’ll have a lot more time to kill. And when do you spend money the most? When you have time. Bear this in mind – some people call retirement “the longest holiday of your life”. Step 1 – Think about your current lifestyle. Would you like to maintain your current lifestyle or do you think you would need more money? Or less? Make a decision. Now choose an income based in today’s money that you would need. Step 2 – Take this income (or combined income if married) and take off mortgage expenses, school fees, pension contributions, life insurance contributions and any other expenses you think you would have shaken off at your chosen retirement age. Step 3 – Now multiply the income by 20 for a rough estimate on the pension pot that you would need to comfortably afford your desired income per year with minimal risk. In other words, 5% of that pension pot withdrawn per year would be the amount you would live on. You now have your “magic number”. This is the target goal of assets that you are aiming to have accumulated before you retire. Think about this number. If you think it is achievable and important, write it down. Put it up on the wall
26 | SE23 - October 2016
at home. This number becomes your retirement planning goal. If you don’t think it’s achievable, then it’s back to the drawing board. If you don’t think it’s important, stop reading now! Final step – take a look at your current pensions and savings. Include any let property income. Will you downsize from your home? Factor this in and total it all up. How does this compare to your magic number? Are you on the right track to retire on the income you need? Is there a shortfall? If so, what do you think would be the best course of action to take? The above exercise is not as sophisticated as the detailed assessments we do for our clients, but it is based on the same core principles and should help you to start thinking about your journey to retirement. Every journey not only begins with a single step, but a single thought. Hopefully, if you’re off track, this will make you feel a little uncomfortable and make you want to do some planning. How much money would you need to retire? And what if we changed the word “need” to “want”? What difference would that make? Time perhaps to do some thinking. Don’t leave it until time has ran out.

Garden Talk
The Many Shades Of Autumn
K
eep the colour going in your garden long after summer. While summer planting has had its moment, there are plenty of plants that are absolutely at their peak right now. Here’s my pick of the key ingredients to make your garden dazzle its way into winter.
Must Have Trees Amelanchier lamarckii - One of my favourite trees for a small garden, for many reasons, not least its stunning orange/red autumn leaves. Particularly nice as a multi-stem. Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ (Rowan) - Another fab tree for a town garden (max height 10m) with scarlet leaves and clusters of yellow berries in autumn. Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ (Japanese maple) - A neat and elegant acer with purple leaves turning intense scarlet in autumn. At 6m tall it’s fine for most town gardens.
Glowing Perennials Sedum ‘Matrona’ - Sedum gets better throughout the autumn. This one has clusters of starry, pale plum flowers, coppery foliage and striking dark purple stems. Or try sedum ‘Ruby Glow’ with deep red flowers. Lovely with silvers and grasses. Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’ Even if you don’t usually like yellow in your garden, you might make an exception for these lovely golden daisies with their striking black eye that’ll light up the garden until October. Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora ‘Star of the East’ - Another sunny choice, this crocosmia has large orange brown flowers into October and a clump of lovely green sword shaped leaves adding summer interest. Verbena bonariensis - With small clusters of purple flowers atop long stems, this looks great popping up amongst grasses and complements warmer yellows. Symphyotrichum ‘Little Carlow’ (Aster) - The gentle lavender blues of asters go with anything. I love ‘Little Carlow’ with its mass of small violet blue daisies into mid autumn, (1m). Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’ is another to look out for.
Gorgeous Grasses Stipa gigantea - If you have room, (they can reach 2m) this is king of grasses with airy oat-like flower heads turning pale yellow in autumn - wonderful when back lit. 32 | SE23 - October 2016
Calamagrostis x acutifolia ‘Karl Foerster’ A tall upright grass with straw coloured flowers in autumn. Stipa calamagrostis has similar flower heads, but has shorter arching branches. Miscanthus sinensis ‘Kleine Silberspinne’ - Some miscathus can be huge but this one (up to 1m) doesn’t take up too much space and the purple flower heads turn silvery in autumn and shimmer beautifully in the light. Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hameln’ - Known as foxtail grasses, pennisetum come into their own in autumn with their pretty fluffy seed heads. This one has long lasting pink flowers and yellow foliage in autumn (1.2m). But there are masses of others to choose from.
Stunning shrubs Cotinus ‘Grace’ (Smoke bush) - A gorgeous shrub with large rounded purple leaves turning a brilliant pinky red in autumn. Reaching 6m it’s great for screening, but keep it contained by hard pruning in spring. Ceratostigma willmottianum ‘Forest Blue’ (Chinese plumbago) - This smaller shrub (up to 1m) will light up the garden with its mass of cobalt blue flowers into October when the foliage turns rich red too. Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ - With pretty green leaves in summer, this is really grown for it’s bright orange-yellow autumn foliage revealing colourful stems with fiery red tips in winter. Stunning against a dark green backdrop. Cut down to the base in March for the best colour. Barbara Samitier - Garden Designer www.barbarasamitiergardens.co.uk

The Last Word – Wayne Perrey & Steph Bron South East Londoners Wayne Perrey and Steph Bron are The DIY Doers. Their mission is to give you the confidence and knowledge to pick up the tools and have a go.
How long have you lived in the area? Steph: 3 years. Wayne: 17 years.
Do you know your neighbours? Steph: Yes, on both sides and across the road. It’s nice to wave and say hello when we see each other. Wayne: Yes, I organised a BIG LUNCH street party 4 years ago and it brought the whole street together.
Do you belong to any groups? Steph: The DIY Doers Club of course! It’s our Facebook group for asking DIY questions and it offers plenty of help and support. You can interact with other DIY Doers and be inspired everyday. Wayne: SE23 Mums and Mummy’s Gin Fund have both been great for introductions to local businesses and are supporters of The DIY Doers club as they can see the real benefit of our group.
Coffee or tea? Where? Steph: Coffee! St.David coffee house is great, in Forest Hill and we make great coffee at home so I love having one in the garden on a sunny morning. Wayne: Always St David coffee house. One of the owners Jordan was a finalist on the “Great Interior Design Challenge” and I had the pleasure of sharing the screen with him.
Cafe, pub or bar? Steph: Pub. I love our local pubs. We’re even having our wedding reception in one! Wayne: The Blythe Vale Tavern is at the end of my street and is so old school it really makes me feel relaxed when I'm in there.
The best kept secret… Steph: Beer Rebellion on Sydenham Road. All locally brewed beer, ale and stout and scotch eggs from Billings the butchers. Wayne: The Phoenix Cafe on Stanstead Road. It’s connected to the residential home and offers great home cooked food and has a huge garden for the kids to run around in at the back.
When I want to relax… Steph: I meditate. Wayne: I horse ride in Mottingham. Cantering across 5 fields, there really is nothing better to clear the mind.
Where’s your favourite place to walk? Steph: I love walking in Sydenham woods if I’m local but you can’t beat walking by the sea. Wayne: I love the walk to Ladywell park because from Catford there are so many different types of parks and then a great cafe to reward you at the end.
What is your favourite shop? Steph: I love charity shops, Forest Hill and Sydenham have great ones. Wayne: Wild horses, opposite Forest Hill swimming pool is the best antique and upcycle shop.
Best bargain you’ve ever landed. Steph: I once got a Kurt Geiger pair of shoes and a French Connection dress for £2! Wayne: I like to trade swap and I made a fab wooden work station for a friend, who in return painted me the most amazing picture of the “London Palladium” as my wife was performing there in “Cats.”
The book I’m reading at the moment. Steph: Fiction before bed is “Look who’s back.” Daytime reading is “Ego is the Enemy” and “Surely you’re joking Mr. Feynman.” Wayne: I’m addicted to Biographies. They make me realise that the journey of life has so many twists and turns and everyone has ups and downs. I've just finished Michael J. Fox’s. http://thediydoers.com Online courses, helpful Vlog & blog posts! SE23 - October 2016 | 37
