Welcome to SE23 This month I am celebrating my 200th issue of SE22 magazine which I started in March 2005. A year or so later I took over the local magaizne in Forest Hill and SE23 was born. I am so pleased that I am still here producing my magazines, all these years later. Over the years I have had help along the way (Julie, Sarah and more) including my fantastic designer Stephen Shillito who designs most of my pages. But with so may new projects ideas in the pipeline, I am really pleased to say that I have now employed my first employee, who just happens to be my sister! Read my welcome to Emma page 33. As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Forest Hill and Honor Oak. The events pages start on page 6. There are a fabulous seven pages of online and in person events happening right on our doorsteps. Please do remember you can add your own events to our website www.arounddulwich.co.uk via the submit button on the events pages. The Last Word this month goes to local business owner Sally Brandon who owns Minerva HR Consulting. Please do read the full article on page 32. If you own a local business or live in the area and would like to feature in The Last Word, please do drop me an e-mail. I am looking for more people to feature this year. Until next time.

Autumn Colour Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw
Plant Cyclamen for a Sprinkling of Autumn Colour
F
or autumn and winter colour and interest, you can’t beat the hardy cyclamen. These little gems will brighten up the darker months with a sprinkling of pink and white. They die back and lie dormant in warm weather, popping up again when temperatures drop. Despite their dainty appearance, they flower away through frost and snow and when happy will eventually self-seed and spread around, carpeting shady spots. In autumn, just as many plants stop flowering, up pop the little heads of Cyclamen hederifolium. These dainty pink or white flowers often appear first, with their striking marbled, heart-shaped leaves following afterwards, forming a carpet after the flowers have finished. White varieties include C. hederifolium ‘Amaze Me’ and C. hederifolium albiflorum ‘Album’ with a mass of upright pure white flowers or for silvery leaves try C. hederifolium ‘Silver Cloud.’ These cyclamen originate from the Mediterranean and put up with quite dry, sunny conditions such as under shrubs or round tree roots - although they prefer some shade and like free draining, humus rich soil to avoid the tubers drying out in summer. Next, flowering from late December, Cyclamen coum flowers are a sign that a fresh New Year is on its way. The rounded, dark green leaves with white or silver markings appear first, so they’ll already have been growing from October. These tiny cyclamen look wonderful en mass, and are perfect for naturalising around the base of deciduous trees and are gorgeous with snowdrops, crocuses and other shade lovers such as ferns. The flowers of Cyclamen coum tend to be magenta pink, but come in a range of pinks to pure white. For something more unusual try varieties such as C. coum ‘The ‘Pewter Group’ which have a silvery coating on the leaves or
12 | SE23 - October 2021
C. coum ‘Ashwood Snowflake’ with pure white flowers. These cyclamen like partial shade and humus-rich, well drained soil so dig in grit or leaf mould if you have heavy soil. Avoid manure as they like poorer soils and this will just produce leaves and no flowers. They also like dappled shade and moisture in autumn through to spring, which is when they grow below ground - long before they emerge. Both C.coum and C. hederafolium make lovely ground cover and are at their best planted in large groups. They look stunning underplanting silver birch trees, or popping up amongst inky black Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens.’ Tempting as it is, avoid planting C. hederifolium and Cyclamen coum together, as the former is more vigorous and will eventually take over. The larger, showier, non-hardy cyclamen are cultivars of Cyclamen persicum. They’re useful for winter window boxes and containers and come in a range of whites, magentas, reds and deep purples but are generally one-season wonders.

Pumpkin & Ginger Tea Bread Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk
I
t is easy to end up with an awful lot of pumpkin at this time of year. If you have done ‘soup’ and ‘pie’ so many times you are in need of a change then this is a great option. It is a surprisingly wonderful moist cake bread which is best served thickly sliced and buttered with a cup of tea. It is also great for lunchboxes.
Ingredients • • • • • • • • •
175g butter, melted 140g clear honey 1 large egg, beaten 250g raw peeled pumpkin, or butternut squash, coarsely grated (about 500g/1lb 2oz before peeling and seeding) 1 grated English apple 100g light muscovado sugar 350g self-raising flour 1 tbsp ground cinnamon (or ginger) 2 tbsp Demerara sugar
Method Preheat the oven to 1800C/gas 4/fan 1600C. Butter and line the base and two long sides of a 1.5kg loaf tin with a strip of baking paper. Mix the butter, honey and egg and stir in the grated apple and the pumpkin or squash. Finally mix in the sugar, flour and cinnamon. Pour into the prepared tin and sprinkle the top with the Demerara sugar. Bake for 50-60 minutes, until risen and golden brown. Leave in the tin for 5 minutes, then turn out and cool on a wire rack. Serve thickly sliced and buttered. Enjoy!

About The Importance of Balance & Coordination Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com
W
hilst working on your balance and coordination may not be on the top of your daily to-do list, it is actually a really important and little recognised part of health and wellbeing. For those who train regularly, balance and coordination are often missed from the training regime. Balance and coordination are part of your day whether consciously or unconsciously. Your brain interacts with your body when you’re doing various things, it interacts with how your senses work, it interacts and controls how your body moves together, or independently. Consciously working on your balance and coordination can help you stay functionally fit, maintain your focus and cognitive function and may even improve your health span. What we mean by functionally fit is being able to do day to day tasks more easily and flexibly for longer. For example: • Getting dressed, having the coordination to stand on one leg to put your trousers or socks on • Having coordination to tie your shoelaces up • Multitasking perhaps at work or at home • Carrying your shopping • Being able to lift a suitcase off the carousel at the airport The mind body connection can help with your focus too. If we don’t train our balance and our focus, like with any muscle or habit, if we stop working it our proficiency tends to drop off.
Simple Ways to Train Balance and Coordination Here are a few simple ideas you can do without any equipment: • One-legged deadlift • Side balances • One leg or arm raises • Standing on one leg on your own or during standing meetings • Tight rope walk (not an actual tight rope walk 16 | SE23 - October 2021
but one foot in front of other heal to toe along a straight line) • Front, back or side leg raises • Yoga poses like tree pose • Step up and down using your bottom step Practising balance and coordination and cognitive exercises that connect mind and body now will put you in great stead for a better health span long term. Stability is a big part of it too, ensuring as you become older you have the balance, coordination and stability to perhaps mitigate against a fall, or you are able to walk on grass rather than the firmer pavement, or walk without a stick, get up and down the stairs etc.
Other Ways to Improve Balance and Coordination Some other perhaps overlooked ways, are things that use all of your senses. So if you’re walking and listening to a podcast, for instance, you’re using your coordination, stimulating the senses in different ways whilst doing something enjoyable. Standing during meetings can be a great way to engage mind and body. Sewing is great for focus and hand and eye coordination. Meditation has been proven to help with all kinds of coordination, balance and focus because it increases your focus, attention span and quality of your focus. All of these things can really help you become better at balance and coordination and also tune and improve your fine motor skills.

Halloween & Fireworks Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk
M
any of London’s Lockdown pets are having a hard time adjusting as the city returns to a new normal. The noises and events associated with everyday hustle and bustle have taken a toll on young animals experiencing many of these things for the first time. The hardest time will soon be upon us. Please do not underestimate the potentially negative impact of Halloween and the long fireworks season. For those of you with lockdown puppies or rescues please consider how sensitive your pet is to novelty or noise and have a plan. Top of the list has to be the good will of your neighbours. Let them know you have a dog or cat and ask them to tell you when and if garden fireworks are on the cards. We can all prepare for organised events, but it is the startling effect of sudden bangs and swooshes from neighbouring gardens that may cause most damage. Not all pets are scared of fireworks, some seem to get used to them. However, where young animals are concerned it is best to assume the worst and stay safe. Very old animals with failing senses can also get a sudden fright where once familiar sights and sounds suddenly become unfamiliar and scary. Again, don’t take any chances. Keep your elderly pet safe with these simple tips. Ensure dogs and cats are shut in the house before dusk. Feed early and get pets out early to urinate and defecate. If your dog goes ballistic at door noises put a polite notice up at your front door or gate at Halloween, explaining and asking people/children not to knock. Alternatively, switch off lights visible from the street and make out you are not home. Cat flaps should be locked. Cats may need a litter tray to see them through the night. Do not walk your dog when there are fireworks about. Make the morning walk the big one of the day and aim to provide indoor entertainment in the evening. Unless they are clearly terrified, playing with your pet, whether cat or dog, is a great way to build positive associations with firework sounds. Make the games rambunctious, play tuggy with the dog, get the cat to chase a toy on a string. Running around counters anxiety.
20 | SE23 - October 2021
Aim to block out disturbing visual stimuli, whether children dressed up as ghouls or flashes from fireworks. Close curtains and blinds. Turn the house lights up bright. Create a sound wall by turning up radios and TV’s, loud. Washing machines are also a great way to block noise from outside. If your pet is anxious, he can of course lie beside you to help him feel secure. However, stay calm, no matter how anxious your pet is. If he wants to hide, let him. It is a good idea to create a covered, dark den at the core of the house, where your pet can hide if they want. Owners that have crate trained their dog or pup will be ahead of the game. Deep, cardboard boxes are also great temporary dens. Deaden firework noise by covering the den with a heavy blanket. Get your pet used to the den now. Fill it with treats and toys, to make it a desirable, safe space. If you know your pet is noise phobic or anxious speak to your vet about calming remedies and/or medication. Don’t delay. Those who feel their pet may have a problem can speak to their vet and behaviourist about treatment. Many pets can be taught over time that firework sounds are non-threatening.

Financial Matters
With Akwasi Duodu | akwasi@sterlingandlaw.com | www.sterlingandlaw.com
Is a SIPP better than a personal pension? Self-Invested Personal Pensions (SIPPs) have become a popular alternative to your traditional personal or stakeholder pension, but why? Are they better? Many people are under the impression that a SIPP would provide better returns than a personal pension, but how true is that? SIPPs certainly sound sexier than personal pensions, but what’s the best option for you?
SIPP v Personal Pensions A SIPP is a type of personal pension that offers more investment options. This and the way they charge are the two main differences between them. There is also a third consideration which is whether your employer would be willing or able to contribute to your SIPP, as not all SIPPs would allow employer contributions.
Investment Options From an investment perspective, most modern personal pensions offer a wide range of investment funds to choose from and this should be adequate for most people. Some workplace stakeholder pensions however, do have a narrower range of funds available than personal pensions. This is primarily to ensure that they remain cheap and accessible for inexperienced investors who would typically need to join quickly without the need for financial advice.
Experience The more experienced investor who wanted more control over their finances may find that the SIPP would be the better option. The SIPP investor would be able to use their SIPP to invest in individual shares, investment trusts, gold bullion and commercial property amongst other qualifying assets. Having these investments under the roof of a SIPP would shelter any investment gains from tax.
Charges The added complexity of a SIPP means you’d almost certainly need a financial adviser to help you manage it. This would be an added cost and 24 | SE23 - October 2021
one would need to weigh up the cost benefit of that. Charges imposed on SIPP investments tend to be higher that those of personal pensions, however some SIPPs charge a fixed annual fee as opposed to a percentage of your pot, which could be beneficial for those with larger pots.
Worst Case Scenario What would happen if your personal pension or SIPP company went bust? Well, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) would step in. Personal pensions that are run by life insurance companies would normally cover up to 100% of the value of your pension pot if the pension company went bust. A SIPP provider, on the other hand, would be covered up to £85,000 per pension scheme member. This is an important differentiator and one worth checking before you took the plunge one way or another.
Which Is Best? Frustratingly, there’s no simple answer. The more experienced investor looking to invest in interesting or esoteric assets such as commercial property, individual shares and commodities such as gold and silver may prefer the SIPP route. Anyone who simply wanted to plan for their retirement in as simple a way as possible may be better off with a personal pension. The good thing is that SIPPs and personal pensions are easily transferred from one to the other, although it’s more popular to transfer a personal pension to a SIPP than the other way round. The worst case (and sadly quite common) is the investor who liked the sound of a SIPP and bought one, paying for the privilege without using any of the many options available. We see this every day and it’s a complete waste of money. Don’t fall into that trap.

“If you can’t say something nice about someone, come sit next to me.” The Dulwich Players are delighted to announce that our next production will feature an allfemale cast performing the touching and comic Steel Magnolias. Originally planned for 2020, but delayed due to Covid-19, the challenges in this play epitomise much of the last year and the struggles we have faced as a theatre group. The title refers to its characters, who exhibit the delicate characteristics of magnolias, but are often called upon to be as tough as steel. Steel Magnolias charts a path though the life of Shelby Eaterton, from her wedding day to less happier events. It takes place within the walls of Truvy’s hair and beauty emporium in the American deep south – what better place to throw shade on everyone in the local community and further. The Last Word – Sally Brandon The most famous person you have met? As my children are actors I have met a few famous people including Simon Callow and Idris Elba. I also know Miles Jupp who’s twins are birthday buddies with my youngest.
Favorite place to go for a drink? I have to say Two Spoons in Honor Oak Park. I love their cocktails and Luca also makes a bespoke one for me, and it is. 2 minute walk from my house.
What is your favorite place to eat? It used to be Le Chardon on Lordship Lane which sadly closed when the owners retired. With 3 children I don’t get to go out too but I do like The Real Greek, especially the one on the river by The Globe Theatre.
Coffee or Tea? Where?
I am Sally Brandon and I own Minerva HR Consulting, a boutique consultancy to help local businesses and individuals with any people needs they might have. From setting up a department from the very start, one off projects and helping devise your people agenda I am happy to support you and your team as needed. I have lived in the area since I was 5.
What brought you here? I grew up in East Dulwich so I am a local girl. When me and my husband were looking for a place to raise or family Honor Oak was perfect with the station being close by and also access to lots of green spaces and good schools whilst still being close to my parents.
What do you most value about the area? The community is lovely both on the road I live on and the local high street. It is rare I go out and don’t bump into someone I know. The easy links to London are a bonus as I am always dashing in and out of town with my 3 children who all act and need to get to auditions at short notice.
What one thing would you like to change? I would love there to be a pharmacy and bakery on the high street. In the past year we have had a butcher and a greengrocer open in the local area which were the other two I wanted.
Hands down it has to be Two Spoons in Honor Oak Park. I love their coffee and that they know me so well I don’t even have to order. My favourite coffee appears in front of me. It has a great atmosphere and is always welcoming.
Best meal I have ever had? I think it has to be a small place that I can’t remember the name of in Noosa on the Gold Coast in Australia, closely followed by my mother in laws Full English Breakfast with oat cakes and a cup of tea.
Favourite place to walk I am not a great one for walking but when I do, I love a stroll around The Horniman or Peckham Rye Park with friends. I also love walking by the sea.
If money were no object? I would fix what needs to be mended in our house, support my children in what they want to do, pay off my family & friend’s mortgages, and travel as much as I could with my husband and children exploring the world.
My perfect holiday. I have always wanted to travel to Bora Bora and relax on the sandy beach reading a good book and swimming in the clear blue sea. www.minervahrconsulting.co.uk
Emma Paterson A big welcome to Emma Paterson who joined SE Magazines last month. Emma is my very first employee and I am delighted to have her support. Emma’s role is Head of Getting Stuff Done! Hi, I’m Emma and I joined Angela at SE Magazines on 6th September. You may notice there is a similarity in our picture and you would be correct – I am in fact her little sister! I am married, and a mum to two boys, Harry and Charlie. I used to live in East Dulwich many years ago so I know the area! Now I’m not too far away so can still enjoy the delights it has to offer. My background is a mixture of customer focused roles within financial institutions, pension providers and publishing. I hope to have contact with some of you over the coming months and look forward to working with Angela to help continue producing fantastic community magazines!
