The Last Word – Claire Empson What one thing would you change? I would reduce the traffic levels back to when we moved in 2012 if I had a magic wand - it’s increased beyond my wildest imagination thanks to the council’s road alterations. I would also re-route night buses and any large trucks to the main South Circular only after 10pm.

All your favourites are here: Food & Drink, page 14; Councillors Column, page 20; the Horniman Museum, page 24; Financial Matters, page 26; Dulwich Picture Gallery, page 28; Garden Talk, page 30; Children’s activities, pages 34 & 35 and the Shopping Page, page 38. The Last Word this month goes to local resident Claire Empson who opens a branch of Daisylets in Forest Hill this month, see p40. See you next time.

Angela Angela Burgess Head of All Things Community SE Magazines/Around Dulwich

The one thing you couldn’t do without? The promise of an occasional barista made Soya latte - and my boys (not necessarily all together!)

The most famous person you’ve seen or met? I’ve met/seen quite a few thinking about it! Boris Johnson probably I think now he’s been in the limelight so much and more recently Sophie Walker, leader of the WEP (Woman’s Equality Party) - to keep on a political theme..

Do you belong to any groups?

Claire Empson was graphic designer/art worker and martial artist in her previous life. Now she is a private landlord and Director of Daisy Lets & Sales, mother of two pre-teen boys and recent convert to Boxing Yoga! Claire is also a passionate environmentalist and supporter of equality in all aspects of life, particularly Women in Business. Claire’s agency has just expanded to new premises in the heart of Forest Hill where her property management department have relocated. It’s business as usual in East Dulwich for lettings, and more recently sales, where they have been operating since 2007.

How long have you lived in the area? East Dulwich for 9 years now Forest Hill for 4 years.

What brought you here? The temptation of a large garden backing onto the woods instead of a patio for a small mortgage increase.

What has changed most during that time? East Dulwich has become a lot smarter, less boho and Forest Hill’s transport links have vastly improved with the overground.

I run a support and networking group for mothers in business held in our office once a month and founded the ThinkBIG project which provides inspiration to young women/girls towards self employment and entrepreneurship on a local level. I attend Cooking with Scissors, an monthly networking group at the Palmerston and Ladies Who Latte networking group that meet in Forest Hill once a month.

What is your favourite place to eat? Thai Lux or Thai Corner Cafe in SE22 or Thai Oriental in SE23. I just love Thai! Thai Lux does the best tofu and the most varied fresh veggies though, their Panang curry is to die for.

Coffee or tea? Where? Soya Latte at Canvas and Cream in Forest Hill

What’s your favourite place to go for a drink? Sylvan Post in Forest Hill or Liquorice in East Dulwich for cocktails or G&T

When I want to relax… I meditate Transcendental style (TM) or chill with a coffee or lemon green tea in my garden and listen to the birds.

What do you most value about the area? That I can actually hear nightingales (at the rear anyway) and my view is of trees rather than other houses

Hectic Host

Chin-chin!

T

he 18th century Gin Craze took hold in a big way, the average Londoner drank 14 gallons a year and London had 7000 establishments selling the stuff. In the slums and unsanitary conditions gin was safer to drink than water and people readily got hooked. The widespread disorder caused by the problem eventually resulted in the 1751 Gin Act which effectively introduced licensing laws in to Britain. There is a second Gin Craze sweeping London, but this time things are a little more rarified; the rise of small batch distilleries and the increased interest in special botanicals have resonated with drinkers looking for a product with provenance. The usual way to make gin is to distill natural botanicals, such as juniper, coriander, citrus peel, cinnamon, etc. with neutral grain alcohol. The skill comes with knowing how to balance the botanicals to deliver the best possible fragrant flavour. Over on this month’s shopping page we identify 14 London gin distilleries – the term ‘London’ means ‘dry’; not where it is made – and here are some ideas of how to serve them up, besides the unbeatable G&T, of course. To my mind nothing beats a Martini and nothing is quicker or easier to make. Ask for a martini in any bar and you should get a cocktail that is around three parts gin and half-a-part vermouth. A dry martini refers to the amount of vermouth that is added, a very dry martini has virtually none, some bartenders go as far as rinsing the martini glass with the vermouth and pouring it away before adding the gin. Despite Mr. Bond’s glamorous request for his drink to be ‘shaken not stirred’ most mixologists will argue that gently stirring the gin with the vermouth in a cocktail shaker and then straining off the ice creates a better drink. A martini ‘straight up’ is without ice, otherwise it is served ‘on the rocks’ or ‘martini rocks’ as you will often hear in the movies, in which case a tumbler rather than a traditional martini glass is used. A martini should always be served with a twist of lemon, twisting the lemon releases the oils on to the surface of the

12 | SE23 - September 2016

blend, and an olive. A ‘dirty martini’ includes a dash of the olive brine. A negroni could not be more simple, combine equal parts gins, vermouth and Campari in a glass and serve with a shave of orange peel. A gin rickey is a rather elegant drink that dates back to the 1890s. Squeeze lime juice into a highball glass, add ice and a measure of gin and top off with soda water. Another gin and lime drink is the gimlet, which comes in many variations. The most correct is thought to be four-parts gin and one-part Rose’s lime cordial. A French 75 is a blend of one-part gin to two-parts Champagne, lemon juice and sugar are sometimes added to the mix and the drink should be served with a shaving of lemon peel in a Champagne coupe. Chin-chin.

SE23 Councillors

News from St. George’s Perry Vale

J

uly 2016 was a special month for St. George’s Perry Vale as the Forest Hill Team Ministry held a Service of Licensing to install their new Priest in Charge, The Reverend Richard Lane. Those of you follow my column in se23, will be aware of the history of churches in Forest Hill, the de-consecration of some, the rebuilding of St. George’s, the reshaping of the area’s ministry and the retirement last year of Father John Ackland, the longstanding Priest in Charge of the Forest Hill Ministry based at St. George’s. Father John’s mission was to make the church a seven day a week community church and hub. He achieved his goal, and our area and community is the better for it. Following his retirement, a search began for his successor and The Reverend Richard Lane was duly appointed, with his installation taking place on Tuesday July 5th 2016 with the service of licensing performed by the Bishop of Southwark, The Right Reverend Christopher Chessun. It was a lovely summer’s evening for the ceremony with the church filled by parishioners, community representatives including the Perry Vale ward councillors. The service was a combination of hymns and prayers, but included The Welcome when the Bishop presents “the new priest” to the church and its community. The Bishop himself welcomed Reverend Richard Lane, who was then greeted by the churchwardens, followed by separate welcomes from community representatives, with Cllr Alan Till welcoming our new priest on behalf of the three ward councillors. After the service, to further celebrate this happy occasion, we partook of a buffet and Pimms in St. George’s’ grounds. Readers will also be aware of the recent renaming of Christchurch C of E Primary School in Perry Vale to St. George’s School. This occurred because the school needed to reaffirm its identity in the area after the church it was associated with, Christchurch in Forest Hill, was de-consecrated. The current link with St. George’s affirms that identity, and the newly renamed school is also a newly rebuilt school completing Lewisham Council’s rebuild programme of our borough’s schools. What also makes the school special is its

introduction of The Daily Mile initiative; the aim of which is to improve the physical, emotional, social health and well-being of children, regardless of age or personal circumstances. Its introduction by Head-teacher, Geraldine Constable, confirms St. George’s as an exemplar school making the Daily Mile part of the regular school routine. It is a simple and effective concept aimed at preventing and tackling obesity in our young children, and is successful because it is simple and free, takes place over 15 minutes, children benefit by being out in the fresh air, there is no set-up, tidy up or equipment required, children run in their uniforms involving no kit or changing time, it is inclusive, social and most importantly, fun. I was invited to attend the launch as a ward councillor and a past London Marathon runner, and with Geraldine and a class of pupils I had fun completing my Daily Mile around the school’s playgrounds! Dinosaurs: Monster Families Until Sunday 30 October

Discover the fascinating world of dinosaurs and their young in this family-focused interactive exhibition. Dinosaurs: Monster Families shows how dinosaurs looked after their eggs, nests and babies. Meet ‘Baby Louie’, a cast of the nearlycomplete skeleton of a dinosaur hatchling; dig in the discovery pit; touch a real dinosaur leg bone and come face-to-face with T-Rex’s relative – a life-size Tarbosaurus skeleton cast. Have fun at the interactive exploration stations, and enjoy an exciting programme of dinosaur-themed events and activities to complement the exhibition. Alongside bird and crocodile specimens from 24 | SE23 - September 2016

the Horniman’s collection, visitors can also see a cast of an extinct Elephant Bird egg, one of which was famously found by Horniman patron Sir David Attenborough in Madagascar in 1960. Ticket prices: Child £4.40; Adult £7.70: Family (2 adults, 2 children) £18.70. Prices include 10% voluntary Gift Aid donation. See www. horniman.ac.uk/dinosaurs for more information. Horniman Members enjoy free, unlimited visits to the exhibition.

Avian Forms

Until Sunday 9 October Artist Jane Edden is fascinated by the relationship between nature and culture, and the human desire to collect and categorise. In this small display, Edden explores the ways in which animals are collected and studied, drawing inspiration from the science of comparative anatomy and the folklore and myths involving winged flying humans that appear across cultures, to create beautiful and intriguing works that inhabit a space between avian and human. FREE.

Prehistoric Garden

Look back in time through the Prehistoric Garden, featuring ‘living fossils’ – plant and tree species which date back to the time of the dinosaurs. A redwood and a yew tree tower above tree ferns, cycads and ginkgos and even an amazing Wollemi pine, thought to be extinct until 1994. The garden, at the highest point of the Horniman estate, is also home to a velociraptor sculpture, keeping a prehistoric watchful eye on the modern London skyline. The Prehistoric Garden was funded through Tesco’s Bags of Help campaign, and voted for by Tesco shoppers in the London Borough of Lewisham. FREE. Please go to www.horniman.ac.uk for information on our regular events and activities including the Horniman Farmers’ Market, Horniman Explorers, Art Makers, Discovery for All and Busy Bees.

Financial Matters

Don’t get mad, get even

T

here was a time when I’d get quite upset looking at my bank statements. Banks, utility and insurance companies, lenders and mobile phone companies, all robbing me silently by direct debit. From time to time, I’d hear their names mentioned on the news. Record profits, yet again - billions! Astronomical numbers that I couldn’t even start to comprehend. Whilst the rebellious part of me said “boycott the lot of them!” I knew that this was unrealistic. Sadly, we are all at the mercy of the big powerful companies that run our lives and it’s pointless getting mad. Perhaps it’s time to get even. Here are 5 steps to take.

1) Make a list of the companies that make a killing out of you How do you feel when you hear that one of the big energy companies you pay on a monthly or quarterly basis has made record profits yet again for an overpriced service that is often well below par? I certainly don’t like it. The first step towards getting even is to look at your bank statement and make a list of all those firms that profit out of you. List them in order, with the biggest “offender” at the top.

2) Buy their shares! You might find that you have a different attitude as a shareholder in those offending companies. You’ll want them to do well and might actually smile when you hear news of their resounding success! Brexit and recent market corrections mean that the share prices of some of the big companies are deflated. This is great news for those buying shares now. Your prospects for capital growth are greatly increased when you buy shares at a discounted price.

3) Spread your risk and think long term Many people are tempted to buy the shares in a sector they understand – for example Utilities or Banks. Worse still, some people invest all their money in the shares of a single company they may like or be familiar with. This can be dangerous. The 26 | SE23 - September 2016

results can be dramatic If all your eggs are in one basket and the share price falls heavily. Much better to diversify, thereby spreading your risk. Do this by investing in the shares of a number of different companies and sectors that aren’t related to each other. Shares also require patience, so think long term. Ten years is a good time benchmark to work to.

4) Get an expert to make your decisions for you With thousands of shares available to buy in the market, knowing what to buy and when to buy can be bewildering. And when do you sell? For a lot of people, it’s pure guesswork; many shareholders purchase or sell when they have the time or when it’s convenient. The more scientific approach would be to employ the services of a stockbroker or fund manager. Typically, a stockbroker would wait for you to give them instructions to purchase or sell, whilst a fund manager would listen to your brief and buy and sell shares for you as and when they saw fit. Either way, the experts are less likely to get it wrong than you are.

5) Beware of tax If you decide to buy shares, it’s very possible that you will make money from them. Most shares also pay dividends which you can re-invest or receive payment for. Regretfully, HMRC are no fun at all and will want a healthy slice of your gains. Thankfully, there are ways of sheltering your gains from tax, for example, purchasing your shares through an ISA or Self Invested Personal Pension. Your best bet is to team up with an Independent Financial Adviser, who will help you keep your gains away from the sticky mitts of the taxman. The time has come to get even.

Garden Talk

Ornamental Onions

I

wouldn’t be exaggerating if I said that EVERYBODY in the entire universe love Alliums. EVERY single client of mine, the wives at least, mention them on their wish list. It might be that they have no opinion on what plant goes in their new garden as long as they get some of the “purple pompoms, you know the round purple flowers”? Yes I know. The Alliums. The wonderful Alliums. Allium constitute a family of plants which counts over 500 species. They include ornamental onions, chives, garlic, and leeks and are closely related to the edible onion. Not only they look spectacular and will bring to life any border but they are easy to grow, will come back every summer for years and years to come, are very attractive to pollinators, they also make excellent cut flowers, some of them lasting up to 3 weeks in a vase. Why writing about them in September? you might wonder. Since they tend to flower in early Summer? Well because if you have missed up on them this summer and you really want some to punctuate your garden in 2015, you’ll need to buy bulbs now ready to be planted in early Autumn, which is…now. Alliums thrive in a sheltered, sunny, open, well-drained site. They do not like cold, exposed or waterlogged conditions. Bulbs should be planted at a depth of about four times the diameter of the bulb. Plant smaller growing alliums 8-10cm (3-4in) apart, taller species need at least 20cm (8in) between the bulbs.

Ten favourite Alliums Allium hollandicum “Purple Sensation” - They are a must. They start flowering mid-May so are a must for the early summer garden. Allium nigrum - These ones bear white flowers in June and are very elegant. Allium Christophii - Their seedheads look magnificent, leave them on for a month or so or bring into the house. Cutback before they set seeds if you don’t want them to self seed everywhere. Allium Sphaerocephalon - They are later-flowering than most so I plant them in all my gardens in order to prolong the “Allium effect”. 32 | SE23 - September 2016

Allium Globemaster - They are enormous with flower heads up to 15 cms and will make a bold statement in your garden. Nectaroscordum sicilum or Sicilian Honey garlic is a very close relative to Alliums. It’s a spectacular and intriguing plant which tolerates light shade. Allium Cowanii - A very delicate and pretty, earlyflowering, pure white allium, smaller than her siblings. You can eat the flowers in salad. Allium “Mount Everest’ - Beautifull fluffy pom poms but white as you probably gathered. Allium atropurpureum - bear the darkest flowers and are shape more like an half sphere than a pom pom. Allium schoneprasum or chives - They produce small and very pretty flowers. You will have to make a choice though: whether you grow them for their flowers or for their edible leaves. They are perfect to edge a vegetable bed. The only problem with Alliums is that their leaves fade and start looking tatty just before the flowers come out, so always plant Alliums behind some medium height perennials or grasse. This way you will disguise the ugly leaves and let the flowers fill everyone with wonder.

That I can actually hear nightingales (at the rear anyway) and my view is of trees rather than other houses 40 | SE23 - September 2016
