Saturday 1 September: Peckham Rye Summer Fete 12pm–5pm. Our annual fete on the Common will be held on 1st September and will have all the usual treats – the Dog Show, Punch and Judy, sack races, coconut shies, food stalls offering everything from hog roast and pizza to burgers, the tea tent selling delicious homemade cakes, the ever popular Pimms and beer stand, plus numerous stalls around the ring. September’s Star Performers Keep the colour glowing in your garden into autumn with these late flowering beauties…
Anemone x hybrid ‘September Charm’ These elegant flowers, which rise up on long stems from a mass of large leaves, will brighten up the garden from late summer until early autumn. A. ‘September Charm’ is a pretty rosy pink and A. ‘Honorine Jolbert’ is a crisp white – both have gorgeous sunny golden centres. Happy in sun and shade – they’re a must.
Aster x frikartii ‘Mönch’ With a mass of pale blue daisy-like flowers, this is another perennial to lighten up the early autumn months. A. ‘Little Carlow’ is another reliable variety with lavender blue flowers. Best in full sun.
Geranium ‘Rozanne’ Of all the geraniums G. ‘Rozanne’ is one of the latest flowering. If you keep deadheading this useful geranium with large pale purple flowers, it’ll bloom into autumn. Happiest in an open sunny spot where it’ll form a large spreading mound.
Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’ Large golden daisies with black eyes they shine out against purples and grasses into early autumn. For a similar sunny sunflower feel, try helianthus varieties such as H. ‘Lemon Queen’ with softer yellow flowers.
Hylotelephium (Sedum) Sedum come into their own in September when their large flat flower heads turn to warm shades of pink, purple and red. Of the many varieties H. ‘Red Cauli’ with crimson red flowers is one of the brightest.
Liriope muscari A very useful evergreen grass-like ground cover plant for partial to full shade. It also has purpleblue flower spikes in late summer. ‘Money Maker’ is a paler version and ‘Monroe White’ is a pretty white variety.
Salvia ‘Amistad’ The salvia family are great for late summer colour and S. Amistad with its large dramatically dark purple flower spires on long dark stems is a stunner and will go on into flowering into October, provided it has a sunny spot with free draining soil. S. ‘Blue Enigma’ is another statuesque salvia with tall spires of bright blue.
Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora ‘Emily Mckenzie’ The warm terracotta orange of this late flowering crocosmia goes beautifully with purples and ornamental grasses. It also has attractive sword like leaves. It likes full sun or part shade and doesn’t like to dry out.
Perovskia ‘Blue spire’ The tall spires of pale grey/ blue flowers on silvery stems create a cool haze when planted en mass. Flowering into late September it looks great with ornamental grasses and other late flowering perennials. Best in full sun, it can get floppy, so cut it right down in spring. P. ‘Little Spire’ is a shorter version of the well known P. ‘Blue Spire.’
Gaura lindheimeri A delicate airy plant with a mass of fine white star-shaped flowers on slender stems from May to September. It’s lovely with ornamental grasses and Verbena bonariensis in an open spot in full sun.
Ceratostigma plumbaginoides A great small shrub for autumn with masses of bright cobalt-blue flowers from August to October which contrast beautifully with the rich russet-red leaves. Full sun or part shade. 12 | SE23 - September 2018

Blackberry & Apple Pie Who didn’t grow up with Blackberry and Apple Pie, it is a dish that makes many of us nostalgic and for me it also heralds the turning of the season. So, what makes the perfect Blackberry & Apple Pie? Everyone has a different view, but for me it comes down to ingredients. The perfect pastry, sweet English apples, and blackberries that have just enough acidity to contrast with the sugar-crusted pastry (shop bought blackberries are often much sweeter than wild ones). I am lucky as between the windfalls from my neighbor’s apple, Amanda’s allotment, and local hedgerows my house is well stocked with apples from September to November. Blackberries are around until the end of the month, so now is the time to make your pies! For preference I would always use a classic short crust pastry, light and not too sweet it will enhance the magical contents within, leaving that to be the star of the show. Plus, of course, it must stay crisp on top! Of course, my way may not be your way, but experimenting is always fun, and I can guarantee no one is going to complain if you are serving up your creations every week until you find the perfect recipe – so go for it! Serves 6-8 - You will need a traditional 2 litre pie dish that measures about 30cm in length. If you really hate making pastry don’t let this stop you – just buy ready-made – it’s still a home made pie!

Ingredients – For the pastry
• 250g plain flour • 150g butter, cold from the fridge • 150g lard, cold from the fridge • Ice-cold water
Ingredients – For the filling
• 6 large Bramley apple • 2 large handfuls of blackberries • Sugar to taste • Double Cream or Custard to serve
Method
1) Put the flour into a large mixing bowl with a small pinch of salt. Cut the butter and lard into small chunks and rub into the flour with your thumbs and fingertips. To bring the mixture into a ball add a little ice-cold water one tablespoonful at a time. Draw the dough in from the sides to form a ball. Be careful not to add too much water at once – you want a dough that is firm enough to roll, but soft enough to demand careful lifting. Once complete set aside in the fridge for 30 minutes, covered in a tea towel. 2) Set the over to 200 degrees centigrade (gas mark 6). Peel, core and quarter the apples, cutting them into thick slices or chunks, whichever you prefer. Put them into the pie dish. Taste the apple to gauge the sweetness, and then add sugar accordingly – I keep my sugar quite light, but you may want to add up to a tablespoon per apple if you have a sweet tooth! Add the blackberries and toss them with the apples and sugar. 3) Roll the pastry out to fit the top of the dish. You want enough extra pastry around the edge to be able to cut off and cover the rim of the dish, plus a few scraps to make some leaves to decorate. 4) Wet the rim of the pie dish with water then fix the outer rim of pastry to it, cutting and pasting to fit. Wet with water or beaten egg and then lift the pastry topping onto the pie, pressing the edge firmly onto the pastry rim. Crimp it to seal with your thumb and first finger, or by pressing down with the prongs of a fork. 5) ut two short slits in the centre of the pastry to let out any steam and decorate the top of the pie with scraps of pastry cut into leaves. Brush with a little milk and dust with caster sugar. 6) Bake for 40-45 minutes, until the pastry is crisp and pale gold. Why does exercise make me feel anxious?
T
here can be several reasons for this. It’s common to find that people have anxieties around exercise. One reason might be that you’re new to it. You don’t know what to expect. You don’t know if you’re going to be any good, how you’re going to get on with it. You really want to like it because you want the benefits, or the doctors told you to do it. Or your partner exercises, and you want to do that together, but you don’t know what to expect. That’s normal. Just go for it. Find a personal trainer if that suits you. Someone who can ease you into the exercise, and pace, and give you the appropriate type and intensity of exercise. Or just get started. My stepfather has just had great results with a Couch to 5K programme, so I’d recommend that. If you’re new to exercise, try and mitigate some of that anxiety by just getting started, and start small. Another reason you might find it anxiety inducing is that your nervous system is already elevated. If that’s the case, the worst type of exercise for you is going to be high intensity exercise. Start with something that’s gentle, restorative. Yoga would be a great thing to do. Light jogging would be another. Perhaps a sport that’s not super high intensity. An easy game of tennis, for example, where you’ve also got some social element. Where you’ve got somebody at the other side of the court, and you can have a drink afterwards perhaps. What I mean by an elevated nervous system is that you’re stressed; you already have high levels of anxiety; your sleep and your mental health might be affected. High intensity exercise is not the right intensity for you. Maybe it’s that you’re worried about breathing, and this is something I hear quite a bit. If you’re worried about your breath, perhaps you’ve had anxiety in the past, and you associate being out of breath with panic or anxiety. That’s also common, so start slow. Get used to having your breathing elevated. Get used to breathing yourself back into

a relaxed state, and then increase the periods of time that you’re elevating your breath for. That’s effective, and it just helps you to overcome that initial reluctance to get your heart rate up and your breathing up because it associates with panic. Last thing is to set small goals if you’re nervous about exercise, for example, because you’re new to it. Set small goals, and that applies to all the other points I’ve made as well. Forget your ego. Forget that, “I ought to be good at this. I used to be good at this. I’m good at everything, why am I not at this?” I think that prevents a lot of people from really enjoying exercise because they think they ought to be better at it than they are. What's On - September Thursday 6 September: Damian Le Bas – A Journey through Gypsy Britain Damian Le Bas grew up surrounded by Gypsy history. His great-grandmother would tell him stories of her childhood in the ancient Romani language – the places her family stopped and worked, the ways they lived, the superstitions and lores of their people. But his own experience of life on the road was limited to Ford Transit journeys from West Sussex to Hampshire to sell flowers. In a bid to better understand his Gypsy heritage, the history of the Britain’s Romanies and the rhythms of their life today, Damian set out on a journey to discover the atchin tans, or stopping places – the old encampment sites known only to Travellers. In his powerful and soulful debut The Stopping Places, a Radio 4 Book of the Week, Damian le Bas tells the story of his journey, and what we can all learn about this often hidden side of British life. On 6th September Damian will visit Dulwich Books to talk about his story. Wander through wild landscapes in the new Grasslands Garden, featuring spectacular plants from North American prairie and South African grasslands. Retired? Bored? Lonely? Want To Do Something Different? “U3A provided me with opportunities to use and develop skills which I had acquired earlier in my life, and that does wonders for one’s self-esteem.” “Being part of a group which is learning and interacting, gives me a lot of satisfaction”. “I found coming to U3A I met people who had been in a similar situation to me.” These are just a few of the comments made by members of U3A. For many people U3A has been a life-changing experience, particularly when they retired, or perhaps at a difficult time in their life, or when they were bored or lonely, or just wanted to do something different. U3A began in the UK over thirty years ago and there are now a thousand groups throughout the country with a membership of over 400,000 older people. There is a small fee for membership, which in D &D is £25.00 a year. The groups are all run by members who are volunteers. They learn together (and play together) in subject groups. No qualifications are expected or given. The purpose of the U3A is to promote lifelong learning in groups of like-minded people who want to share an interest, hobby or pastime. Dulwich & District U3A has over 80 interest groups! The choice is impressive and covers: Art, Archaeology, Astronomy, Boules, Computing, Crafts, Cycling, Films, Genealogy, History, Languages, Music, Museum and Gallery visits, Opera, Poetry, Photography, Quizzes, Scrabble, Shakespeare, Play Reading, Tennis, Theatre, Ukulele, Walking, Writing, Zumba and much, much more! Evidence commissioned by NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) concluded that participation in creative and physical activities could improve mental health and wellbeing. Our U3A covers Herne Hill, Forest Hill, Honor Oak, Sydenham and Peckham, although anyone living further away is welcome. Outings and visits to museums may incur an extras charge but all monthly meetings and interest groups are covered by the yearly fee. What's On - September Friday 14 September: Harpsichord Recital at Bell House 7pm Lorraine Liyanage and Alexandra Kremakova, local musicians and teachers at the SE22 Piano School, will perform a harpsichord recital to raise money for Bell House’s projects and courses that are funded by donations. Ribera: Art of Violence will be the first UK show of work by the Spanish Baroque artist and printmaker, Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652), bringing together his most sensational, shocking and masterfully composed work. This exhibition will explore for the first time the theme of violence in Ribera's work to demonstrate how his images are neither the product of his supposed sadism nor the expression of a purely aesthetic interest, but rather involve a complex artistic, religious and cultural engagement in the depiction of bodily suffering - challenging visitors to look beyond the shocking imagery.

Do I Need a Financial Adviser?
A
m I the wrong person to ask? Perhaps! I might be biased and of course you would expect me to say “Yes, you do!” But maybe you don’t. What I’ll try to explain here is why you might need one and what you can expect.
Fees Many people think financial advice is out of reach and far too expensive for ordinary people. This is not true. The first thing you can expect is a free initial consultation. This initial consultation is typically exploratory, where your financial adviser wold do his best to get a comprehensive picture of your financial circumstances. Some advisers may offer you a free financial health check, where after gathering information about your circumstances, they will give you a breakdown of where they feel there may be shortcomings in your financial planning. It is only when they start doing chargeable work that fees would apply. For example, in writing a report summarising your financial position or in setting up a plan for you. Most advisers would charge an hourly rate or a percentage of what you invested and this would all be discussed and agreed before they started any chargeable work.
Many Difficult Questions Expect to be asked some difficult questions. For example, if you had a family, your adviser would be sure to ask how your family would survive if you died. Or as a non-working Mum, whether you would you be able to get by financially if your husband died last night. Or what would happen if you were unable to work due to accident or illness? What about if you suffered a critical illness? How would you cope financially if you were out of work for say two years? Your adviser would want to know what rate were you paying on your mortgage and whether you could get a better deal? What about other 34 | SE23 - September 2018
debts? Do you have any? What is the interest rate? Should you be paying them off? What is left after you’ve paid all your bills at the end of the month? Is there a surplus? What are you doing with it? Perhaps there is a deficit. What can be done to change that? How much money would you need to live on in retirement? Do you have a target? Are you on track? If not, what are you doing about it? What about your savings? What return are you getting? Could you do better? Are you paying unnecessary tax on your savings? Are you expecting an inheritance? Have your parents done any estate planning? What about you? What taxes would have to be paid if you died? Have you made a Will?
A Financial Plan After all these difficult questions, your financial adviser should be able to put a financial plan in place to plug any gaps in your finances. Your adviser probably won’t tell you much that you don’t know already. But hearing it from someone else, someone who is objective and can see you with fresh eyes can be invaluable. Typically, you would end up with a summary of recommendations. And your adviser would ask you to prioritise what needs to be done sooner rather than later. The relationship wouldn’t end there. Your financial adviser should arrange to have a discussion with you every so often to help ensure that your plan evolves with you as your life progresses. Your priorities may change. Your circumstances may develop. And your financial plan must change, develop and evolve around you. Personally, I think financial advice is worth every penny and can change your life for the better. The Last Word – Sarah Botting Sarah Botting – local mum and owner of Lucy Sparkles & Friends in Brockley, Forest Hill & Crystal Palace, running music, dance and drama classes for early years children. Sarah works part time across the area and spends the rest of her time looking after her two young children (who occasionally get to join in the classes…).
What brought you here? I’ve lived here for 6 years and having explored most of south London on foot in search of the right mix of convenience and cafes, we realised that Honor Oak would do the trick!
What has changed most during that time? We are so fortunate to live in a little village bubble that’s still part of one of the greatest cities on Earth (not that I’m biased…). There have been lots of additions to the area since we moved in, but the atmosphere we loved when we first came here hasn’t changed.
The one thing you couldn’t do without? Fred’s – great coffee and a welcoming smile.
Where’s your favourite place to walk?
The most famous person you’ve seen?
By the sea, listening to the waves. If that’s not possible, One Tree Hill is pretty good too!
I once saw Colin Firth walking down a street. Pretty much the high point of my life…

My perfect weekend would start with the kids sleeping beyond 5.30am! Then after that we’d probably do something local like go cycling in the park or have a lazy brunch. But then my kids quite enjoy it when I’m doing party entertainment at the weekend as they like to watch me doing my face paint!!
What was the last thing you bought there?
Your favourite place for a night out? We’re so lucky to have so many local places for a night out (by which I mean, an enjoyable drink or meal followed by walking home!) Le Querce and the Beer Dispensary are two of my favourites, though I miss Mr Lawrence’s!
Where are you to be found on Saturday? Saturdays usually start with a swimming lesson for my little boy, followed by a giant snack! When I’m not doing party entertainment, if there’s time, we’ll take a trip into town or out to the countryside, or just catch up with friends locally.
What is your favourite place to eat? Home! You can’t beat a home cooked meal with a good glass of wine. 40 | SE23 - September 2018

The book I’m reading at the moment.. 50 Ways to be Happy. I bought this wonderful books from Smallprint Books in Forest Hill, and it’s all about practical ways of feeling positive about life. I’m reading it with my son, who is 4. He’s a bit young for it to be honest, but I think this should be compulsory reading for children and parents alike! We are having so much fun being ‘kindness detectives’ and making ‘VIP badges’ for his friends. It’s rare that, as adults, we stop to take the time to think of the little kindnesses that make our day complete, but it really does help you to be happy!
