Welcome to SK Bramhall & Woodford Welcome to the July / August issue of SK Bramhall & Woodford. Well a lot has happened since our last issue popped through your door. I’ve decided along with my contributors to make this month magazine as positive as possible. I know it’s been an awful time for a lot of the SK residents and my best wishes are with you all. I normally pick out a couple of articles to entice you to read the magazine, but I really do feel that if you have the time, give them all a read. Along with the wonderful articles I’d also like to highlight our amazing advertisers. Many of them have supported the magazine throughout hard times over the last 11 years and I can’t thank them enough for the support over the last couple of months. Their on-going support means I can continue providing your community magazine direct to your door. We have four pages of events in and around the area along with two pages of Children’s Activities this month. Please do check any events you plan to go to first, as things are changing on a daily basis at the moment. So do check to avoid any disappointment. It is lovely to be back and I hope you enjoy the read. All the best

WORKING FROM HOME, THE NEW TREND
he last time I put my tappy fingers on the keyboard for SK Magazine I had no idea of the huge changes with how we would be shifting the way we work and live. Covid 19 has steamed into our world relentlessly and working from home has become the way forward for many. Trend analysts have suggested this for years but it’s taken a forced situation to test it’s worth. Research now shows that three out of five employees would like to work more from home since lockdown and are looking to spend £1179 on average to tailor their home office. Technology is at our fingertips, Zoom calls replacing meetings and noise cancelling headphones drowning out the washing machine. Advantages can be seen by employers too, finding less office space as rotational hot desking can be implemented resulting in less overheads. Benefits for the employed are plentiful, a two minute commute to your desk, pop your washing out in your break and make your favourite fresh coffee and lunch. Consider which area you will make your office. Look at lighting, ventilation, view and privacy. It may be possible to convert a spare bedroom, adapt the space under the stairs or create a garden office with many ready-to-go structures on the market. Zone your area using rugs, bookcases and/or décor. If it’s a space within another room just painting it a different colour visually creates a separate area. Let your style of work and your
own personality dictate your space. If you work in a bland office usually but you’re a fan of stronger colours, this is a chance to create your own oasis. A dull corner can be transformed with a mirror reflecting the outdoors, plants and pictures. Alternatively, if you work better without clutter then a cool, minimalist vibe can look amazing. Furniture is key. You really can use any desk or have some bespoke furniture made, it’s more about making it look like it belongs, but shelves, cupboards and clever storage is essential. Think whether you use reference books, papers or magazines often and find a solution to clearing it away. If it’s handy to have more than one computer open at a time, you’ll need a bigger desk. Perhaps children are in the same space when work is finished, then maybe make use of shelves rather than rattan baskets on the floor. You can start your vision by making a mood board or pinning images to your taste, much like ones I’ve included here. You may need a hand and I’m here to help. It’s your space for working, celebrate and enjoy your home office.

Summer recipe M
BBQ Steak Fajitas (serves 6)
y husband has treated me to a new BBQ. It’s a dual fuel – gas and charcoal – and I love it. I never let FK anywhere near the cooking on the BBQ – when you spend time choosing the right cut/ marinating it etc then why let someone else take all the credit! I thought I’d do a nice summery, fun and easy recipe for this months SK magazine and this one fits the bill. A friend of mine loves Mojito’s so I’ve added a recipe for these too – enough for 6! For the steak: 4 garlic cloves, peeled 1 tbsp fresh lime juice 1 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp hot smoked Spanish paprika 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander 1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon onion powder (don’t worry if you haven’t got it) 2lbs/900g hangar steak, cut into 4 equal pieces Purée garlic, lime juice, oil, paprika, cilantro, cumin, salt, and onion powder in a blender until smooth. Transfer marinade to a resealable plastic bag and add steak. Seal bag and turn to coat; chill at least 4 hours. For the rest: 1/2 medium head green cabbage, cut into 2 wedges, core intact 1 large white onion, halved with some root end attached 1 bunch spring onions, trimmed 6 tbsp olive oil, salt, freshly ground pepper 1/4 small red onion, finely chopped 3 tbsp fresh lime juice 1 tbsp chopped fresh coriander Warm flour tortillas (for serving) Prepare bbq for medium-high heat. cabbage, white onion, and spring onions with 4 tablespoons oil; season with salt and pepper. Grill, turning occasionally, until vegetables are charred and softened, about 4 minutes for spring onions, 10–12 minutes for cabbage and onion. Let vegetables cool slightly. Core cabbage and cut into bite-size pieces along with spring onions and onion. Toss chopped vegetables in a large bowl with red onion, lime juice, coriander, and remaining 2 tablespoons oil; season with salt and pepper. Remove steak from marinade, scraping off excess; season with salt and pepper. Grill steak until medium-rare, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer to a cutting board and let rest 5–10 minutes before slicing. Serve steak with vegetables, tortillas, and some spicy tomato salsa. Mojito Juice of 6 limes, 6 tsp sugar Handful of mint 360ml white Rum Soda water to taste Muddle the lime juice, sugar and mint leaves in a jug, crushing the mint as you go – you can use the end of a rolling pin for this. Pour into a tall glass and add a handful of ice. Pour over the rum, stirring with a long-handled spoon. Top up with soda water, garnish with mint and serve.

COVID Resilience
n these unprecedented times, much has changed. Some temporarily, whilst some things will never be the same again, as society prepares to move into a new phase of reduced lockdown restrictions. It’s impossibly complex, but somehow we must find a way to re-ignite the economy, whilst keeping everyone safe. There is no perfect solution, but I have tried my best to pull together some simple steps, that if we all take, will maximise our chances of a successful release... I am calling it the COVID resilience strategy. 1 - Practical steps: It is no secret that very basic, practical steps can dramatically reduce the spread of any virus and hence protect ourselves and others. n Wash your hands thoroughly and often, especially after a trip out. n Do not touch your face at all, especially if you are away from your home. n Hand gel is your best friend in the absence of a sink and soap, slap it on often. n Keep your distance! Whether the rules say 1 metre or 2 metres by the time you read this, the further away the better in terms of transmission risk. n Stay home as much as you can. Despite the new freedoms, it is still the smart thing to do right now. n Wear a mask if you go out. Yes it feels weird, and us Brits aren’t used to it, but guess what, updated research says they work, so get one, and get comfortable wearing it. 2 - Physiological steps: Practical steps are effective and necessary, but let’s not neglect our own body’s resilience! n Supplement with a high dosage of Vitamin C and D! It’s cheap and easy to do and research increasingly shows these two gems are protective against COVID-19 along with many more benefits, so take them.* n Don’t forget your 5 a day, in fact maybe make it 10. Supplementing is great, but a generally healthy, balanced diet is essential for overall bodily health and resilience.
16 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2020
n If you haven’t already; STOP SMOKING! Lung
heath is pivotal to COVID-19 survival, so if you’ve kept up this expensive and lethal habit so far, now is the time to quit. n Exercise as much as you can. The fitter and stronger your respiratory and circulatory systems are, the safer you are. n Sleep. Your body heals, balances and regenerates when you sleep, so switch off Netflix an hour earlier tonight, and get some more rest. 3 - Psychological steps: The final factor in emerging from lockdown successfully is to harness the power of the mind. n Meditate. Simply breathing deeply and clearing your mind for a few minutes each day is a powerful way to reduce stress and anxiety, boost immunity and boost mental clarity. There are many apps to support this practice. n Optimism. An optimistic mindset is not a miracle cure for adversity, but it helps. Those who consider themselves lucky experience more luck, it’s a fact, so practice thinking that “the worst is over” and expect things to improve, and they probably will. n Social connection. Humans are social animals and we’ve been isolated for too long now. Explore any social connections you can either on the phone, videolink or with socially distant meet ups. It is hard work at times but it will boost feelings of wellbeing and motivation. This article merely scratches the surface of what we can do to boost our COVID resilience. For a more comprehensive account then please visit my blog on my website. *Please do your own research before taking any form of supplementation, and check with your doctor if you have any concerns at all.

New campaign launched to raise £ millions for football clubs outside the Premier League. This month SK caught up with local businessman Gary Conner who has set up the campaign. (via Zoom) “After hearing Mark Palios (Tranmere Rovers owner) on BBC talking about how many of the smaller clubs could face real financial ruin if their seasons were ended prematurely and they were not able to play in front of crowds. As a lifelong football fan, I thought that the time was right to launch a campaign to help as many clubs as we could. I contacted Wardwiz whom I had been working with to give their mobile security software away free to everyone that donates. Should fans decide to subscribe and keep the software in the future, then 50% of their small monthly subscription will go to their chosen club. This way we help clubs now and create ongoing revenue streams for them going forward.” Football fans looking to give financial aid to their favourite teams outside of the Premier League now have the opportunity to show their support - thanks to a new website www.supportourclubs.com is a not-for-profit campaign aimed. at providing football clubs with a steady flow of income during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond.
18 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2020
The site contains over 300 football clubs from the Championship, EFL leagues 1 and 2, Vanarama and Bet Victor leagues. Supporters can simply select their club and donate. Fans will be able to contribute to their chosen club from as little as ten pounds. They will also have the chance to be part of a football community, sharing news and ideas to help keep their clubs going. The North West is hotbed of football with local clubs featuring in all leagues. We know how important our smaller clubs are to their local communities, businesses and the overall wellbeing of society. Football is far more than just the big clubs. We can’t allow those outside the top tier to be forced to shut down. They are vital to the integrity and future of our great game. This campaign is aimed at everyone not just football fans. If you support a premier club then you should still visit and donate. Just think about the importance these clubs have in our towns and communities and support in any way you can. We need to support and protect them all! Take a look at the website www.supportourclubs. com to find out how it works and how to donate. Unprecedented times
I
n a bimonthly article of just 500 or so words, it is impossible to distill the worldwide impact of the Coronavirus on people, their businesses, and the economy. Nor is it possible to tell the 10,000 daily stories of human kindness and selflessness. We have faced pandemics before, notably the Black Plague in the 14th century; the Spanish Flu 1918-1920; AIDS since 1981; H1N1 ten years ago; and now Covid-19. There are many steps that the government has introduced to assuage some of the immediate economic impacts on businesses and families including furlough payments, help for the self-employed, VAT holidays, rates relief and grants, Bounce Back Loans and CBILS and so on. As a result, conversations over recent weeks with clients and friends sometimes touch on “how do we pay for all this”? The conclusion has to be that it will take more than a generation to correct this ever-deepening financial hole. I wrote a few years ago in one of these articles that the UK’s national debt was over £1.5 trillion and by March 2020 the UK’s national had already grown to £1.8 trillion. But, what is the National Debt and how does it arise? At the end of every year the UK economy reports a Budget Deficit, which arises because national spending is greater than revenue from taxes collected. So to ‘balance the books’ the government embarks on a combination of; borrowing more by selling bonds (+25% are owned overseas, but the majority are held by UK insurance and pension funds) ; printing money; and raising taxes and endeavouring to spend less in the following years. In 2018-2019, the budget deficit was £24.7 billion, and the forecast for 2020-2021 is for a borrowing requirement of a staggering £250bn-£350bn
26 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2020
which will comfortably take us crashing through the £2 trillion ‘and then some’ debt figure. But frightening as these figures are, debt should always be considered alongside the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is the value of all finished goods and services in a year. Debt without a consideration of the country’s ‘annual earnings’ is meaningless, and so all countries record their debt level as a percentage of their GDP. Until the 2008 recession, the UK had been faring well with a debt/GDP ratio of between 30% - 40%. History gives us further context. The Napoleonic Wars saw a ratio of 200%, and by the beginning of the 20th Century, the ratio had fallen to 30%; but then the two world wars caused spikes of over 150% in WWI and approaching 250% in WWII. It took all the years between WWII and the 1970s for the percentage to fall to 50% and then to 25% by 1990. Since 2008 the curve has been upward once more with UK National Debt now well over 80% of GDP whilst at the end of 2019, France, the US and Japan recorded 98%, 107% and 238% respectively. But now with UKs GDP falling by a record 20% in April alone, I am afraid our debt to GDP ratio could return to those historic levels that we have seen before, and importantly survived before.

Our Unexpected Journey I
t’s quite a journey we have been on, since the end of March and still unsure of the destination. The last time I sat down to write an editorial piece for SK Magazine was in February. Back then I could meet friends for a coffee, book an appointment at the dentist, give my dad a hug and travel abroad. Then ‘wham’ COVID-19 bulldozed into our world, and everything changed. We watched in disbelief as our neighbours in Europe battled to save the lives of their nationals, and we desperately made plans to avoid the worst happening here, never expecting to suffer the highest death toll in Europe. Overnight people lost their livelihoods, whole sectors of the economy shut down, families and flatmates were thrown together 24/7, parents became teachers and many people became sick, seriously sick and despite the best efforts of our frontline NHS workers, many people lost their lives. The virus has changed our lives. During this time something else changed too, something no one could have predicted, it wasn’t tangible. It was the change that we chose to make for ourselves and others. With every day that passed we saw, read and heard about the very best of humankind, something I suspect many thought had long since left our society – our communities came together.
30 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2020
The NHS has inspired a whole new generation to become, doctors, nurses and medics. We have realised the value of our key workers; delivery drivers, postal workers and refuge collectors, that can’t do without them and the care profession finally got the recognition it deserves. On a simple local level, we reconnected with our neighbours and rallied to support our community. We are learning to live alongside the virus as best we can. We have also learnt to reach out to others, we’re more readily available to help out and we’re more aware of the needs of others. COVID-19 has brought untold misery but it’s also brought us closer and made us feel, even in isolation, more connected in a way we could never have imagined. Our journey isn’t over, but it will be made easier knowing that we’re not travelling the journey alone.

Happy Summer!
hope you have all been keeping well and safe. Hasn’t it been a funny year so far, hopefully, you’re all fit and well and it’s great to be back. In this issue of In Stitches, I thought I would discuss how to keep your sewing machine in shape, a quick review of eco-friendly thread and share some things you can sew to keep you busy! I have been busy setting up a new group in Stockport, sewing scrubs for the NHS and local healthcare workers alongside almost 1,000 sewers around all of Stockport, including men, women and children. Scrubs, if you don’t know, are the lose fitting tops and trousers you’ll usually see medical staff wearing in hospitals. They’ve been in huge demand by all staff in hospitals and care homes, and if you’ve needed to see anyone for any healthcare, you might find they are wearing all sorts of wonderful designs. We have endless number of donations of bedsheets from all around Stockport from floral designs to superhero designs and wonderful children’s characters donated by children themselves. So when you next meet your health care worker, and they’re wearing bright, wonderful designs, think of the Stockport Sewing community, rallying together, volunteering endless hours to a wonderful cause. Look for For The Love of Scrubs, Stockport And Cheshire. Sewing has been taken up by so many more people, and with so much more time on our hands, so many more of our community are taking up sewing as a hobby. It’s fantastic. Machines are sold out in many places and with shops being shut, people are having to bring out the old to recycle to new. Just remember when you’re bringing your machine out of a 20 year sabbatical leave, to give your machines a good clean and find new needles and threads to use. You can use 3 in 1 machine oil to smooth out the workings and use your manual to help you to thread the machine up properly. You can usually find your manual by
32 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2020
typing in your machine make and model number with the words ‘manual’ and ‘pdf’ to source a free copy on Google. I have made a few tutorials online to help you check your machine and how to give them a good clean before you start on your sewing projects. With recycling on topic, Gütermann have launched recycled plastic threads. The multi packs of ten threads are priced at around £18, so about the same as buying an individual reel and I applaud he company’s efforts to make change and hope to see more improvements by the sewing industry to encourage recycling. I have given the threads a try and I see them just as good, if not better than new plastic so I’m happy to move toward using these more. Single colours are limited to black and white at the moment, but a multi pack should give you a nice mix of what you need. Finally, I have found time to make other things as well as teepees for the children next door and toys for for children. If you’re wondering what you could do to make a difference in the community while you have your sewing machine out,you could have a go at making face coverings for friends and neighbours. I use interfacing as a bonded, waterproof filter, much better than vacuum cleaner bags or coffee filters which I see often recommended. HK Masks have a great design, they supply to medical units around the world and I’ve found easy to make and fit well on the face. Coated garden wire will give a great fit over the nose. You can follow my YouTube tutorial to make these for you. Take care and look after yourself. Health & Beauty
BACK AT LAST!! Bramhall Osteopathic Practice is finally re-opening after 3 months! It has been a really surreal and life changing time for so many of us and I’d just like to share some of the positives and negatives at this phase. Hopefully, both of these we can learn from and adapt post Covid 19. I think for everyone, the huge bonus has been the amazing weather, blue skies and sunshine, I can’t remember ever having this so consistently! With this the flowers, blossoms and trees have given amazing displays of colour and form. Birds seem to be everywhere, it’s almost as though nature has said a huge thank you for a reduction on air pollution. We’ve also had more time as families, although home schooling has been challenging and not being able to be with elderly family members sad. However, I think the I.T. skills of the over 70’s has dramatically improved, even my mum has become an expert on Zoom and Facetime and children are now looking forward to going back to school! The levels of stress have increased with many jobs and businesses affected in huge ways. However, people have begun to appreciate the benefits of meditation, walking, biking or exercising regularly outdoors, all of which help bring stress levels down. People have also got used to doing various sorts of exercise on-line, yoga, pilates, dance etc. Initially we had a few phone calls about stiff necks from trying to watch and do the exercises with peoples necks in odd positions, but people have adapted and thought things through.
34 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2020
Home working has become the norm and may well continue at least part-time in the future, reducing travel and running costs. The ergonomics of home working have been a test, but again, getting people to analyse their work position has been helpful, using a separate keyboard with laptop on a pile of books has helped neck/shoulder issues. Getting a good chair and table height, also getting up and moving about at regular intervals has really helped neck and low back issues. Then of course, we have social distancing and increased hygiene standards, parts of which will always be worth maintaining and may help reduce the incidence of other viral/bacterial infections e.g. flu in the futrure. The lovliest thing of all, has been the increased feelings of community, the Thursday night clap, VE day celebrations, the beautiful rainbows in so many windows and golf courses opening for walking. I hope you all manage to get your lives back to some sort of normality soon and find this reflection helpful. We are excited to be getting back to doing what we do well. Keep well!

Wilmslow Wells for Africa: Gardens Day
The Wilmslow Wells for Africa Gardens Day scheduled for late June has been postponed due to COVID 19. We will continue to monitor the lockdown and social distancing advice with the hope of holding a scaled down Garden Day later in the summer, subject to keeping our gardeners and visitors safe. In the meantime, the charity has decided to hold its first ever “Virtual Open Gardens Day” towards the end of June. Various gardeners will share stories about their gardens highlighting some aspect of their recent progress. These will be combined with videos and photographs to bring the gardens to life. Further information will be available shortly on Facebook (@wilmslowwellsforafrica) and our website (wilmslowwells.org). On top of COVID 19, many millions of Africans continue a daily struggle to access fresh water and adequate sanitation. 36 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2020
Last year, our Gardens Day raised almost £18,000 which helped thousands of Africans access clean water. With the likely impact on this year’s Gardens Day we are keen to try to maintain our charity fund raising. Alongside the virtual Gardens Day, we are therefore are also promoting our “Not going out” fundraiser. Maybe you and your friends can make a donation using some money you didn’t spend or e.g. a coffee, a meal or a trip out? Keep safe.

Pilates anytime, anywhere! The Pandemic has brought all manner of uncertainty and worry. Stay safe, stay at home campaigns has helped protect against infection, but the side effects are considerable. Isolation, lack of contact with the outside world, lack of exercise, and that allimportant mental stimulation. This is why, now more than ever exercise is an important lifestyle factor to consider for supporting immune function and our emotional and mental health. Even though some lockdown restrictions are being lifted it’s going to take a while before face-to-face group classes resume so in the meantime why not join an online Pilates classes? What are the health benefits of Pilates? Pilates improves flexibility and increases muscle strength and tone, it also improves concentration, body awareness and stress management. Arguably the most important health benefit received from Pilates is all about good posture and the calming self-confidence boost that comes with it. Best of all Pilates can be tailored towards any age group. Pilates breathing can help boost overall health. You must create space for the ribs to expand, by standing or sitting tall and then breathe wide and deep into your back and sides, maximising lung capacity. Try to breathe in through your nose and keep your shoulders relaxed. Breathe in for up to a count of five and out fully for up to a count of five. When the muscles are stretched, circulation improves. This, combined with the deep breathing associated with Pilates exercise, brings more oxygen to our muscles, creating healthier cells throughout our bodies.

Stress and anxiety can weaken the immune. Pilates is great for calming our nervous systems and relieving stress. Exercise helps to distract the brain from daily worries and stress. Pilates also helps to increase energy levels and aid sleep, to allow you to function better with the demands of your day-to-day life. By eliminating the stress and anxiety, Pilates is working to keep you healthy. By attending regular online Pilates classes, this gives a structure to the day and something to look forward to. Moving my own Pilates classes online has done more than just give my small business some stability. I actually really enjoy teaching online and through Zoom I’ve been able to interact with clients surprisingly well. I also still get to socialise with people I’ve taught for months and years. And, it’s lovely to see that clients can catch up with class-friends too. This lockdown has not beaten Pilates bodies and we can keep Covid-19 at bay while still keeping backache at bay too.
