Welcome to Wilmslow & Alderley Edge Welcome to the March / April issue of SK Wilmslow & Alderley Edge. Hopefully this month’s bright front cover will get us all in the mood for springtime and we can leave winter behind. This months Under the Hammer, Charles Hanson highlights a Chinese bowl found in a local valuation day last month. It came in a box of general items and is expected to fetch in excess of £25,000. Might be worth checking out what’s in those boxes up in the attic. All the details are on page 12.

This month Interior Design page 28

Our interiors expert Sharon Rankin has some great ideas to reclaim that comfy corner, a place where you can just get some me time. Turn to Interior Design on page 28 for her tips. We have five pages of events in and around the area along with two pages of Children’s Activities, to help get you out and about within the community and make the most of springtime. Hope you enjoy the read. Cheers

Simon

W

A COMFY CORNER.. HOW TO GET THE LOOK

e would all love to relax in a comfy chair, a place that’s calling us to sink into, somewhere to rest after a busy day. Maybe there’s a space bookmarked for this very job but it has ironing, lego or a dog there now. Reclaim it and rebrand it. Firstly, unless you’re used to lots of colour, go with a more neutral palette, by not choosing the accent colour in your room, it feels more restful, more trusting for your weary self. Let’s be honest, you might love your bright yellow lamp and cushions, but relaxing and bright yellow aren’t a pairing I’d usually pick. Choose the room carefully, a perfect corner in your entrance hallway may look great, but if the window cleaner/ neighbour/children can’t help but see you there I’d find another corner. Maybe your bedroom, the lounge, sun room, there’ll be a quiet(er) corner just right for you. You may need to hide that ironing or relocate the dog but that’s a winwin in my book. Next, let’s see what you have in your home that you can use. Your basic requirements if you look at all of these images are a chair or love seat, with or without a footstool, a lamp and a side table, but if the chair is to go next to some existing shelves it will be fine without a side table. Make sure that these are all items you love, this is a corner for you, don’t make do.

If you need something new take time to find something that speaks to you and it will look great. The neutral chair must be comfy, layers and textures are key. If it’s a cold day a soft throw will look great and feel lovely to snuggle under. Use cushions for texture and interest and to prop your head or feet on. The side table can hold your favourite books and magazines, a candle, a picture or two and maybe a lamp. You may choose a floor standing lamp that arcs over with a warm glow. Add a mirror or some art, choosing one large piece makes an impact or if you prefer a gallery wall for interest go for that, it’s all about you. We must look after ourselves before we can look after others. We hear it often but do it less. Here’s an opportunity for a few minutes a day to relax and think of what you need. Happy choosing your pieces, if you need help let me know. If you put this together and it makes you smile, you’ve cracked it.

Spring Recipe T

Pork and Prunes

his used to be my signature dish when I first got married. I had forgotten all about it until I re-discovered it in this version by Rick Stein. I have to say my original was far, far too sweet but this is absolutely perfect. Make sure you use the best pork you can buy (definitely not from Denmark – they treat pigs appallingly) it makes a difference. I’ve used Iberico pork from Spain where they happily graze on acorns and slowly grow fat and delicious – buy it online from Basco Fine Foods. Serves 4 30g butter 2tsp vegetable oil

Heat half the butter and oil in a frying pan and brown the pieces of pork for 1 or 2 minutes and set aside (don’t overcook them or they will go cardboardy). In the same pan add the remaining butter and fry the shallots until softened (not browned). Add the cognac and cook until the liquid is reduced by half. Add the cream, chicken stock, jelly, prunes and thyme and cook for a couple of minutes before putting the pork slices and any juices back into the pan. Season with salt and pepper and cook for a further 3 or 4 minutes by which time the pork will be cooked through. (Again don’t overcook) Remove the thyme sprigs and sprinkle in the chopped parsley.

700g pork fillet – trimmed of sinew and then cut into 10cm rounds

Serve with mashed potatoes or rice.

2 banana shallots

Yum.

60ml Cognac 150ml double cream 250ml chicken stock 2tsp redcurrant jelly A few thyme sprigs Handful of pitted prunes Handful of flatleaf parsley Salt and pepper

Take Empowerment not Excuses from Human Evolution Around 70% of the developed world is overweight or obese. Human evolution can be used either as an excuse for this or to empower us to become part of the 30%.

Evolution as an excuse Millions of years ago, early human descendants needed to move for about 19 miles a day to secure food, over approximately 14-16 hours. Homo species were also nomadic, so would frequently move the entire tribe miles for safety or increased foraging possibilities. In today’s world we do next to no exercise at all, because we don’t ‘need’ to. Exercise wasn’t a choice in our distant past it was a survival necessity, if we had the option to rest and conserve calories we would have done! So it’s little wonder now that we choose not to move most often. Food was pretty scarce too on the whole, and hard to come by; foraging was tricky, and hunting took great skill and a great amount of calories to succeed at. When high calorie food was found or hunted, such as nuts, seeds, or meat, it was highly valued as it gave our brains a big hit of dopamine (a pleasure response) to ensure we wanted to repeat the behaviour. Those with the best fat storing genetics would then have been best set to survive periods of scarce food. So, basically, being alive today means we are the descendants of those best at fat storing, and those who sought most voraciously, the highest calorie foods. We are literally designed, instinctively, to seek out high calorie food and to store fat whenever there is a surplus. Apply that to the current developed world, where in the last 50-60 years, high calorie food has become abundant, and you can see why around 70% of the developed world has become overweight or obese in that exact time frame... It is not fat or sugar that are to blame, it is both!

Evolution as empowerment Interesting as this is... the very fact I CAN explain it to you and you can understand it, is the very 22 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - January/February 2020

reason why you can, and you must rise above it. You see, alongside the above, humans have evolved a far more complex brain than any other species. We have the ability to solve complex problems, to judge right from wrong, to interpret emotions and to act with tact and caution where needed. This can be called ‘consciousness’. We set ourselves apart in almost every way from all other species, who are either wholly or majorly instinct driven, so why should our food and activity patterns be any different? Just because we have evolved to instinctively seek out and store high calorie foods and to do as little exercise as possible, doesn’t mean we have to succumb to this. Our ancestral past is rife with murder, destruction and violence and we’ve managed to use our consciousness to regulate this via civilised society (the remnants of this instinctive behaviour can be found in jails across the world), so lifestyle must be similarly regulated. The high profits associated with junk food, drinks and poor health (drugs and medical procedures) sadly mean that resolution is unlikely to come from government level, so it is left to us as individuals to take the necessary action. We need to seek and to find what works for us health wise, and to do it, not just what we instinctively want to do. We can no longer use our instincts and desires rooted in human evolution as an excuse, we are better than that, and we have to be if the species is to continue to survive.

Fast Fashion and Sustainability

W

rap is an independent charity, set up to measure the Waste and Resources in the UK. The Action Programme looks at how products from food to clothes is manufactured used and disposed of, taking into account the carbon dioxide emissions and our water footprint. The UK’s textile industry created a staggering 24 million tonnes of CO2e in 2012 (see wrap.org. uk) and a four year initiative designed to drive manufacturers as well as consumers, that’s you and me, to do better to improve our carbon footprint. In 2016, four years later, that number changed and sadly, not for the better, but it actually increased to 26.2 million tonnes. Crazy! Social media is riddled with vloggers and bloggers up cycling and recycling and making efforts to improve this number, however, Wrap suggested the number may have increased due to fast fashion’s pressure to decrease prices to move fashion even quicker. The UK’s 2017 landfill contribution amounted to 300,000 tonnes of clothes. That’s a staggering amount of clothes. How much of that could have been donated, recycled or upcyled? The guesstimating is that each item of clothing purchased is worn on average 7 times before thrown in landfill and summer holiday clothes, possibly just worn once. What can we do to help this pollution and waste? Wrap created SCAP; a group of signatories which includes manufacturers and consumers; pledging to do our bit to help reduce the pollution and waste. Marks and Spencer’s pledged to sell cotton textiles made purely from fair-trade, organic or recycled sources by 2019. Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s by 2020. So, look at how your clothes are made and where. Love and care for your clothes. Reducing waste in washing by reducing the temperature of the washing water and use less soap in the wash. Understand how to care for them, learn how repair them if needed.

The only Vintage charity shop in the UK is on our very own doorstep. You can find Barnardo’s Vintage on Cheadle High Street. The store is filled with vintage goodies, so much so, television producers have popped in to make large wardrobe purchases. You might even spot some of your donated items on Call the Midwife. Charity shops are great source for fabrics and sewing goodies, especially some items you might recognise from your Nan’s sewing tin (which we always hoped there’d be biscuits in as, falsely, stated on the lid). So as wedding season approaches and we are all looking at preparing for this festive time. Look to re using wedding dresses and promoting a vintage affair. Pay homage to generations before, respectably wearing the beautiful gowns you can find in charity shops. There’s nothing more romantic than a wedding that has a little eccentricity and that eclectic style to show a personal warmth. Sterile, commercial dresses produced quickly have no flair, they leave a tacky flavour and show no flair or imagination. Before Queen Victoria introduced the fashion of a white wedding gown (white as a symbol of her status), and like many cultures still, the bride’s wedding gown was the good gown. It was the one dress a bride would own and saved for special occasion. It did not sit wrapped up and saved in a box for ever. Dresses were colourful and came in many different styles. Let’s make a change, wear something awesome at your wedding, break from that old cliché white dress, grab something vibrant and so very you. Let it be worn many times and enjoyed every time. https://www.facebook.com/AbisSewingDen/ @Abis.Den http://abisden.blogspot.co.uk

Ways to keep your spirits up

t’s often said that that during winter it’s not unusual to feel a bit blue, especially when it is harder to get out and about and enjoy the outdoors. So, with Springtime upon us we should now be looking forward to the longer evenings, warmer weather and therefore feeling much brighter. However, for those in our community who are not always able to get out and about, Age UK have some tips and ideas to beat the blues whatever the time of year.

Stay connected Try to keep to your usual routine as much as possible. If you can’t visit friends or family, phone them, use email or try video call services like Skype or FaceTime. If getting out and about is difficult or you don’t have anyone to connect with why not check to see what support is available locally? Both Stockport and Cheshire councils have events and activities that cater for all ages, including older adults.

Do something you enjoy every day. Settle in with a favourite book or audio book. Do a puzzle in the paper or online. Try your hand at painting, pick up a bit of knitting or tune into an afternoon radio play. Find something that makes you feel good and make time for it.

Keep moving Being active – even just a little bit – is proven to help give you boost. A quick walk down the street, dance around the kitchen or satisfying stretch in bed or a chair are all good pick-me-

ups.

Have a natter A regular chat with a friend can make a huge difference to how we feel. We can share stories, catch up on the latest news and even have a bit of a moan when we need to!

Don’t ignore your feelings If you’ve been feeling down for a while and it’s stopping you from doing the things that matter, making you feel listless or like you don’t have any energy, you don’t have to suffer in silence. Share how you’re feeling with a friend, family member or doctor. There’s help out there if you feel you need a little more support. It has long been said that by helping others it makes us happier. By reaching out to those in our community who our vulnerable we can help rekindle neighbourly spirit, reduce social isolation and even prevent illnesses. And probably lift our spirits too!

28 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - January/February 2020

Hypnotherapy in Alderley Edge

Make positive, lasting changes to your life Robert Brennan is an experienced hypnotherapist, personal coach, NLP practitioner, meditation and mindfulness tutor. Robert specialises in the rapid release of PHOBIAS, removing ANXIETY, freeing people from ADDICTION, dealing with TRAUMA and coaching people to achieve POSITIVE CHANGE in their LIVES. Sessions can be held at his private clinic in Alderley Edge, at clients’ homes, over the phone or via video link.

MAME DIOUF: Before I met Rob I had a terrible fear of flying which had been there for as long as I could remember. The phobia was extremely hard to live with because both my career as a professional footballer and my personal life involve frequent flying all over the world. I was desperate to get rid of the fear because of this, but was very skeptical of hypnosis at the same time... I should not have been skeptical however, as after just one hour with Rob I was completely cured of my phobia and have flown many times since with no problems at all. I would even say that I enjoy it!

Email or call Robert now, quoting ‘SK Magazines’ to book your FREE TELEPHONE CONSULTATION to discuss the next steps in achieving the changes you desire.

Pilates for Horse Riders

o ride effortlessly requires strength, balance and control. To control your horses’ movement you need the ability to move your body correctly and effectively from your pelvis. You also need suppleness to move with your horses’ movement. So many riders spend countless hours schooling their horses and fixing their imbalances, but don’t look at themselves. Horse and rider are a combination. In order for the two of you to shine you need to start taking care of your own health and fitness as well. When training off the horse, you need to look at your body as a whole. It’s not just about fitness or strength exercises, it’s also about breath, body control and how flexible you are in the right areas. Looking at the principles of Pilates it is easy to see how these can be adapted to the requirements needed to be an effective and competent rider. Pilates will teach you better body awareness and more control over your body Alignment – Alignment when riding has a huge impact on your horse’s way of going. If your body is misaligned your weight will be heavier either from side to side or front to back with detrimental affect to your horse’s way of going. You need to think of your pelvis, ribcage & head as building blocks which need to be stacked up over one another for correct alignment. If these boxes are out of alignment your weight will be focused more over one side of the horse.

Breathing – Breathing the Pilates way, deep and wide into the back of the rib cage helps to increase fresh oxygen into the system and strengthens the abdominals. It is important to learn to breathe properly and to exercise the lungs fully. Learning to breathe properly helps you to remain calm and tension free, thus promoting free flowing movements. Centring (Core Stability) This is the ability to maintain control of the pelvis, spine, and shoulders. Think of your core stablising muscles like the core of an apple, running through the entire length of our spine, from our pelvis to the centre of our head. When riding you need to be able to go with the movement of your horse, to remain toned & balanced. Engaging your core muscles will help you to absorb the movement and keep good alignment. So whether you ride for pleasure or have a desire to compete professionally Pilates is a must for all horse riders.
