EXCEPTIONAL FROM START TO FINISH “Incredibly pleased with the renovation work by Spring Decorating. The work involved the replastering of several rooms, replacing internal doors, bannisters, spindles, radiators and then redecorating. All f inished to a very high standard, which I am delighted with. The team was professional, eff icient and f riendly. I wouldn’t hesitate to have them back in the future.” Review verif ied by Which? Trusted Traders

Welcome to SK Bramhall & Woodford Welcome to 2024 and the January / February issue of SK Bramhall & Woodford. I love this front cover image, crisp, clear and cold. But not too cold, I hope. After all the Christmas festivities there are still plenty of panto’s, plays and concerts are happening in the area. Why not get out and support a few of them; I know they would really appreciate your attendance. All events are listed on pages 5-10.

All the best for the holidays.

I’ve found some amazing furniture, old metal signs, collections of picture frames to spray up. I’ve also repurposed some oars into coat hooks and I’m wondering what to do with some old wooden stepladders that were left in
ld stuff, tired stuff, damaged stuff, especially where furniture is concerned is treasure, not trash in my eyes. I think of the life it used to have, the times it used to live in, and it feels magical to me. They say ‘if the walls could talk’ which can hold true to gorgeous pieces re-imagined for your home too. There’s always something utterly fabulous that catches my eye in restoration yards. If you need a fireplace, a door or maybe some kitchen stools then definitely look to invest in something unusual that’s had a previous life. Nobody else will own it, there’s often a tactile beauty to love, and it will probably last a lifetime. Alternatively, pick up an old wooden window frame and make it into a mirror, a picture frame, a towel rack positioned with brackets holding it off the wall. Some old bed springs could be attached to the bedroom wall with photos, ribbons and dried flowers slotted in. A simple old suitcase becomes a practical storage vessel and coffee table simply by adding legs and cleaning it up. I wonder what our new versions with bright pink plastic outers, wheels and extendable handles will become in a few more years?
Just Helping are here again to take away your old Christmas trees for a small donation. Last year the collection raised an amazing £63,078.99 for 15 local charities in the area. Check out Charity news on page 18 for the full story, which has details on how to sign up. Volunteers are welcome! With loads of great articles to catch up with, why not grab yourself a brew (and one last mince pie) and enjoy the read.

Finds touch my heart and bring history to life A love for history drew me to the world of antiques and collectables and a job I love. For example, the October Toy A new year of discoveries beckons and, as I look back at 2023, so many Poppy and card sent to Mrs Bowen from have touched her husabnd, James, in circa 1915 my heart. I was particularly struck by a poppy sent from a soldier from the WW1 battlefields to his darling wife in Stockport. He never made it back. That humble flower together with his medals and service records were all she had left to nurse a broken heart. I always say every object tells a story, none more so than the shirt worn by Sir Bobby Charlton in the 1966 World Cup semi-final. It sold to an international buyer for nearly £60,000. As a football fan, it was a huge privilege to oversee its auction. But sometimes it’s the smallest of things, not of particularly great value, that stir the emotions. A worn by tiny 14th century child’s Sir BobbyShirt Charlton in the 1966 right shoe, found in World Cup semi-final against Portugal waterlogged conditions in York, represented the very essence of hardship. The medieval find was bent, battered and worn. It was part of a childhood clogs collection treasured by the mother of antiques expert Eric Knowles, my personal hero. My respect for Eric runs deep 12 | SKBramhall & Woodford - January / February 2024
and I was delighted when he joined Hansons as a consultant valuer in 2023. Sadly, he lost his mother, June, a proud Lancastrian, in April 2023 at the age of 88. He decided to honour her love of social history by parting with her clog collection amassed over 40 years. For her, the footwear provided a stark reminder of the poverty and living conditions faced by our ancestors. She kept them in shallow-glazed table cabinets. June collected objects that reflected the social history of Lancashire Charles Hanson with English child’s and the North medieval shoe sold for £320 West. Her clogs focused on small children, on average aged between two and three. At a time when infant mortality was high, sometimes these examples of footwear were a child’s one and only pair of clogs. During the Industrial Revolution (c.1760-1840) and beyond, clogs became common place as workers needed strong, cheap footwear. Men, women and children wore clasped clogs, particularly from the 1840s to 1920s. Though traditionally associated with Lancashire, they were worn all over the country. Sometimes children wore them but never owned them. They were lent to children whose families could not afford to buy shoes. However, the history of poverty stretches back much further. That worn medieval shoe represented a child’s difficult life centuries ago. It walked tall at auction, achieving £320 from a £100-£200 guide. It survives to remind us of poverty and endurance.

THE BRAMHALL REPAIR CAFE
aste is a problem; it accounts for 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions as much as aviation and shipping combined! It is being produced at a scale never seen before. As a way to try and help Sustainable Bramhall in association with Bramhall’s Green Network set up the Bramhall Repair cafe in April 2023. The aim is to repair household objects to stop them being wasted and sent to landfill, or to prevent the re-manufacturing of items with the associated carbon dioxide emissions. In the first 8 months of running the cafe 267.8kgs of materials were prevented from going to landfill and there was an equivalent saving of 3136.4kgs of carbon dioxide emissions. The Repair Cafe is free to use but donations are welcome. It is run by volunteers on the first Saturday of the month 10am until 12noon at Bramhall Methodist Church. People who arrive with their items can enjoy a hot drink and cake while they wait for their item to be repaired. We encourage people to watch the repair and hopefully learn a few tips about how to repair things for the future. The most common repair objects are small electrical items (non-white goods) like hair straighteners, hairdryers, coffee machines, lamps, toasters, kettles, vacuum cleaners and food mixers. The biggest problem is opening these items to access the parts that need repairing. We have some special tools for this, but manufacturers don’t make it easy! We also have people who can repair clothing including rips, holes, fix up hems and zips.
14 | SKBramhall & Woodford - January / February 2024
Most weeks there is an upholsterer who can repair chairs, foot stools and recover lampshades. There are volunteers who can do basic bike repairs like punctures, gears and brakes. Pram wheels can also be repaired. Other volunteers can give computer advice, and some can carry out general repairs such as mending wooden furniture and repairing broken ornaments. One volunteer set up a digital radio for an elderly couple. Potentially it’s possible to print replacement parts using a volunteer’s 3D printer. Sometimes a problem is identified and advice is given about where to get a new part so that people can return at a later date for the part to be fitted. People who have visited the Repair Cafe seem pleased that they have the option of ”keeping much loved and useful items working for longer, cutting waste and better for the climate” Helen. They enjoy the experience, chatting with volunteers drinking tea and eating homemade cake. “….I must say that everything has been first class, friendly and very well organised” Neil . It would be great to see you at the Repair cafe with items for fixing. Perhaps you would like to volunteer as a repairer yourself? For more information contact ecobramhall@ gmail.com Facebook, ‘Sustainable Bramhall’ or ‘Bramhall’s Green Network’ .

Winter Recipe I went to a fabulous Vietnamese/Cambodian restaurant in Stockport the other day. It’s called the Mekong Cat and it’s on Underbank. Anyway it was brilliant – not flashy but really good wholesome food. It inspired me to try out some recipes and this one came to mind for this publication. I will try making Pho but the broth recipe is quite daunting.
Fry the aubergine in the oil until golden brown set the aubergine aside and drain off all the oil. Put the aubergine back into the pan and cover with boiling water. Give it a gentle stir and then drain off the water. This takes away much of the excess oil – aubergines are very thirsty for oil.
This will also suit those who are cutting out/down on meat for the new year.
Put all the ingredients back into the pan and cook for 5 minutes until the sauce has gone deliciously thick and sticky.
Vietnamese Aubergine – Serves 4.
Serve sprinkled with sesame seeds and steamed Jasmine Rice and enjoy.
1 large or 2 small aubergines cut into 4 lengthways. Large splash of vegetable oil 500ml of boiling water 2 tbsp good quality soy sauce (I like Kikkoman) 2 tsp soft brown sugar 1 tsp hot paprika powder Pepper 4 spring onions finely chopped. Try to keep as much of the green leaves as possible. 16 | SKBramhall & Woodford - January / February 2024

Charity News
CELEBRATING OUR 2023 COLLECTION! In partnership with St Ann’s Hospice, JustHelping ran their most successful Christmas Tree Collection to date in January 2023. Through collecting and recycling 5,270 Christmas trees across Stockport, Trafford, Salford and Manchester, the Collection raised £63,078.99 for fifteen local charities in the area. A huge thank you to Amazon whose depot in Trafford provided 67 vans helping to collect 4245 Christmas trees. Also, volunteers from MAG Airport, Cardinal Global Logistics, Vodafone and Argyle NW Construction who were instrumental in helping to collect the trees. Argyle NW Construction also sponsored hot breakfasts for all volunteers across the collection daysthank you so much! Thank you to Manchester City Council and Diocese of Salford who allowed us to chip all trees at Wythenshawe Park and Wardley Hall where the chippings were then reused by the parks aiding their grounds maintenance. Mark at Spectrum Plants was, as always, immensely generous in providing his tree chipper at Wythenshawe Park. Thank you also to Bridgewater Tree Services who were similarly generous providing a chipper and team at Wardley Hall. We would also like to thank Salford Red Devils, Unagi, JP & Brimelow, Snapes Estate Agents and Famous Henry’s for sponsoring our marketing materials. Fourteen local charities and community groups involved in the collection also benefitted from donations! 18 | SKBramhall & Woodford - January / February 2024
Plans for 2024! We have grown again for 2024 and will be collecting in all areas of Stockport, Trafford, Manchester and Salford! We are so excited to welcome Francis House Children’s Hospice who will join St Ann’s Hospice as the beneficiary partners of the event. We are honoured to be able to work with both St Ann’s and Francis House Hospice to aid them to continue the incredible work and support that they provide to the people of Greater Manchester and its communities in their times of need.
We have an abundance of volunteer roles on offer. If you enjoy getting your hands dirty, then you can be out and about collecting trees or helping to chip them. If you’d rather keep warm, we have several crucial administrative roles across the weekend based in Wythenshawe Park. The collection runs from Thursday 11th through to Sunday 14th January 2024. Pencil those dates in! If you are interested in getting involved, please email mcrcollection@just-helping.org.uk If you are not available to volunteer, then simply registering your tree, leaving a generous donation and sharing our event greatly helps! https://just-helping.org.uk/register-tree

RESTORATION TREASURE
O
ld stuff, tired stuff, damaged stuff, especially where furniture is concerned is treasure, not trash in my eyes.
20 | SKBramhall & Woodford - January / February 2024
I’ve found some amazing furniture, old metal signs, collections of picture frames to spray up. I’ve also repurposed some oars into coat hooks and I’m wondering what to do with some old wooden stepladders that were left in
the garage of a house I moved into. You can get creative too (or I can for you if you need help) and dovetail it into your current décor or room you’re re-designing. Your home will be unique and personal to you with some Restoration Treasure.

LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY (LPAS)
C
lients often ask for information regarding Last Powers of Attorney (LPAs). We asked Carl Chapman, Solicitor, from Thompson Chapman Solicitors to explain the difference between a Finance and Health LPA, how they are used and why people might choose to consider them.
as your medical care, social activities and even where you live. When setting up the LPA, you will also have to consider whether to give your attorney the authority to make decisions about life- saving treatment. Unlike an LPA for financial decisions, your attorney can only use this LPA if you no longer have mental capacity.
A power of attorney is a legal document and is an effective way of giving someone you trust the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf.
Importantly, if you lose mental capacity and don’t have this type of LPA in place, any decisions about your health or care will be made by healthcare professionals. Whilst they might consult your family when deciding what is in your best interests the final decision lies with them in the absence of an LPA.
There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) One for making financial decisions and another for making health and care decisions. Each LPAis separate and distinct from the other. You can set up LPAs for both types of decisions or for just one of them. An LPA for health and care decisions can only be used if you lose mental capacity. An LPA for financial decisions can however be used while you still have mental capacity. You need to consider if you want the LPA for financial decisions to be effective immediately or only after you have lost capacity. You can cancel an LPA at any time while you have mental capacity by writing to your attorney or attorneys and the Office of the Public Guardian advising them of your decision. If you create an LPA dealing with financial decisions this gives your attorney the authority to make all decisions about your finances and property unless you limit their authority by including specific instructions when setting it up. If you create an LPA for health and care your attorney can make decisions about things such
28 | SKBramhall & Woodford - January / February 2024
It is possible to create an LPA yourself either by obtaining paper application forms from the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) or you can create an LPA online. Alternatively, you can employ the services of a solicitor. You can appoint as many attorneys as you like, you can also specify that attorneys must act jointly for specific decisions, such as selling a house, but they can act jointly and separately for all other decisions.

Mindset Advice
DID YOU KNOW THAT EVERY 19TH NOVEMBER IS INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY?
It’s been going on since 1992, but I don’t think it’s that well known. This belief is compounded by the fact I made my own coffee that morning and then spent the rest of the day at kids parties, when surely I should have been out hunting, arm wrestling and drinking with my all male friends?! Okay, old fashioned stereotypes aside, what is International Men’s Day actually all about? There are 6 objectives to it: 1. To promote positive male role models; not just movie stars and sportsmen, but hard working everyday men too. 2. To celebrate men’s positive contributions to society, community, family, marriage, child care, and the environment. 3. To focus on men’s health and wellbeing: social, emotional and physical. 4. To highlight discrimination against men in areas of social services, social attitudes and expectations, and law. 5. To improve gender relations and promote gender equality. 6. To create a safer, better world, where people can grow to reach their full potential. looking at the above however, they all seem pretty positive and sensible expectations of society for all really, so why therefore do we need to have a “men’s day”? I think the reason we need one is because something just doesn’t seem to be working for men right now… The facts: n 75% of all deaths by suicide are men. n Men are far less likely to seek diagnosis and help for anxiety or depression than women. Only 30% of individuals who seek help are men. n Men have far higher rates of substance abuse and dependency than women. n Men, especially older men, are more likely to suffer from social isolation. n Men account for over 60% of cancer deaths, and over 55% of global heart disease deaths. 32 | SKBramhall & Woodford - January / February 2024
Now I know there are valid arguments that society IS serving men better than women in many ways, BUT purely in terms of life and death, physical and mental health, men are coming off worse. The above is also before you include the extremes of war and violent crime and how they affect men. Over 90% of all global war deaths are men and 80% of homicide and violent crime victims are men (and 90% of the perpetrators too - which can’t be ignored). Furthermore, in the home, men are the “breadwinner” 70% of the time, and this, as well as the above highlighted issues, results in men being 10 TIMES more likely to take their own life due to their financial situation than women. I’m sharing this today in the hope that it raises awareness, and gets us thinking differently about men and how they are being served by society, as they can get a bit of a hard time quite honestly. The solution is not talking either, many more men have engaged with talking therapies in the last 10-20 years than ever before, however in that same time, more and more men are taking their own lives. What questions does the above information raise, and how can we address these issues better as a society? I hope that this article has given everyone, men and women, something to think about, and I hope it helps people to start having more conversations about men’s physical and mental health. I also hope it helps to get people thinking about how we can start to reverse some of these worrying trends in future.

THE TWO CERTAINTIES, DEATH AND TAXES:
I
INHERITANCE TAX, A VERY BRIEF GUIDE
nheritance Tax, often regarded as the UK’s most hated tax, has been making the headlines recently with the news that the government expects to raise £7.2bn of it in 2023/2024. Despite only affecting a relatively small number of people with just 3.73% of deaths resulting in a tax charge, it is likely to figure prominently in the major parties’ manifestoes at the next election. In this article, we offer a brief introduction to the tax and at the same time consider some simple tax planning that can be undertaken. Inheritance tax of 40% is due on a person’s estate, that is, the property which is left on their death. No inheritance tax is due on the first £325,000 of a person’s estate. There is a further tax-free allowance of £175,000 if the family home is left to your children or grandchildren. While this ‘nil rate band’ may in the past have sheltered most people from inheritance tax, the increase of house values over many years has contributed to increasing numbers being caught out by the tax. Assets transferred between spouses or civil partners are exempt from inheritance tax. This means that anything you leave to your spouse or civil partner will not be subject to inheritance tax. Unfortunately, this exemption will not apply if you and your partner aren’t either married or in a civil partnership so the surviving partner could end up with a hefty inheritance tax bill. If your children are sufficiently well provided for, then leaving your estate to your grandchildren might be a useful way to reduce the overall inheritance tax bill. Rather than leaving your estate to your children who then leave it to their children, skipping a generation and making your grandchildren beneficiaries means that inheritance tax will only be paid once. Trusts can be set up if the grandchildren are too young to
34 | SKBramhall & Woodford - January / February 2024
own the property themselves. Gifts made before a person’s death can also potentially be caught by inheritance tax. However, there are several useful exemptions that apply to gifts. The most useful gifts which will not be subject to inheritance tax are: • Any gifts made more than seven years before a person dies (there is a sliding percentage scale according to how long you live for after you have made the gift, eg if you survive between 5 to 6 years the rate of tax is 16%). • Gifts of up to £3,000 can be made each tax year • Gifts of up to £5,000 can be made by a parent on their child’s marriage or civil partnership. Giving to charity is another useful way of reducing your inheritance tax bill. Any amounts that you leave to charity in your will is not subject to inheritance tax. Additionally, if the amounts donated to charity make up at least 10% of a person’s estate, the inheritance tax rate is reduced from 40% to 36%. This is just a very short introduction to inheritance tax and some simple ways that the tax bill can be reduced or even eliminated. Planning ahead is vitally important and making a will is usually the first step to be taken.

PELVIC HEALTH PHYSIOTHERAPY
V
aginal prolapse is a condition where the pelvic organs, such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum, descend into the vaginal canal due to weakened pelvic floor muscles. Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in managing and alleviating the symptoms associated with vaginal prolapse. Physiotherapists specialising in pelvic floor rehabilitation employ a personalised approach to address the unique needs of each patient. Initially, a comprehensive assessment is conducted to determine the severity of the prolapse and identify contributing factors. This assessment includes a thorough examination of pelvic muscle strength, coordination, and overall function. Pelvic floor exercises, also known as Kegel exercises, form a fundamental component of physiotherapy for vaginal prolapse. These exercises aim to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, providing support to the organs and improving overall pelvic stability. A physiotherapist guides patients in performing these exercises correctly and monitors progress over time. In addition to targeted exercises, physiotherapy may involve biofeedback techniques. This technology helps patients visualize their pelvic floor muscle activity, enhancing awareness and control. Electrical stimulation is another modality that can be employed to activate and strengthen the pelvic muscles. Education is a key aspect of physiotherapy for vaginal prolapse. Patients learn about lifestyle modifications, proper body mechanics,

and strategies to avoid activities that could exacerbate the condition, such as constipation. Weight management and dietary advice may also be provided to reduce pressure on the pelvic floor. Physiotherapy for vaginal prolapse is not only about strengthening muscles but also addressing associated symptoms. Techniques such as manual therapy and stretches may be utilised to relieve discomfort and improve flexibility. Patients are encouraged to communicate openly with their physiotherapist to ensure a holistic and patient-centered approach. In conclusion, physiotherapy is a valuable and non-invasive option for managing vaginal prolapse. Through a combination of exercises, education, and therapeutic techniques, physiotherapists empower individuals to regain control over their pelvic health, ultimately improving their quality of life. A recently updated booklet for patients is available via the Pelvic, Obstetric and Gynaecological physiotherapy website. www.thepogp.co.uk

PILATES FOR REHABILITATION Nothing feels more debilitating than getting injured. At first, you can feel defeated due to the ‘inconvenience’ on your plans and lifestyle. On the flip side, it could be the start of a tremendous journey of re-discovery, new plans, and strength not yet experienced before. What Causes Injuries? In general, there are two ways in which injuries occur. An acute injury is a single blunt force or a traumatic event such as a fall or collision that can result in fractures, dislocations, breaks, or sprains. Overuse injuries are usually subtle and occur over time from misalignment, poor form, and/or repetitive movements that cause an imbalance in the body. Many weekend warriors that primarily sit all week and then go hardcore with an extreme sport and no cross-training end up with injuries. The most common injuries are to the wrist, back, shoulder, hips and knees. Whether recovering from a pulled muscle in the lower back or hip surgery, learning to connect to your core will improve your quality of life so that you can learn to move more effectively and with less pain in the long run. Why Pilates? Pilates is an excellent way to prepare the body for everyday activities as well as for sports or other strenuous forms of exercise and is recommended by PT’s and doctors due to its therapeutic nature. It’s a whole-body exercise that promotes agility, strength, and good posture. A healthy body requires both mobility and stability and Pilates meets those needs. Pilates exercises can be modified to meet the injured clients’ needs in their current state. If the injured client is in acute pain there are plenty of exercises/modifications to work around the
40 | SKBramhall & Woodford - January / February 2024
affected area creating strength and support. Pilates can alleviate aspects of the psychological toll an injury places on an individual. If you bring full attention to the exercise and do it with full commitment, you will obtain maximum value from it. As a result, the injured client feels they play an integral role in their healing. A consistent Pilates practice gives you strength from the inside out. It aligns and balances the Musculoskeletal system, increases bone density, and improves balance and range of motion. Pilates enhances proprioception, (knowing/sensing where you are in space) which improves self-awareness. All of this equals a body with improved reflexes and balance which in turn aids in preventing falls and/or injuries that stem from overuse or repetitive actions. It’s important that you find a qualified Pilates instructor with training and experience for dealing with injuries and rehabilitation. When injured, the conventional Pilates repertoire is not suitable as modifications are necessary. Overall, Pilates with a qualified instructor is a safe and progressive method on the journey of rehabilitation.
