Welcome to SK Bramhall & Woodford Welcome to the November / December issue of SK Bramhall & Woodford. I know, where has the year gone. We chose this lovely image for our front cover with Remembrance Day on the horizon, a moment for us all to give thanks for our wonderful armed forces and remember family members who have been lost defending our freedom.
This month Under the Hammer page 16
Well, if Remembrance Day is coming soon that also means Christmas is on its way! This month we have plenty of news and events to get you in the festive mood. Santa is back touring the village, Just Helping are here to take away your old Christmas trees, for a small donation. There are Christmas markets, card shops and plenty more. Please remember to contact the organisers of the events and activities we have in the magazine. People and groups will be going at their own pace so it’s best to check up before you go than be disappointed on the day. Grab a brew and maybe a mince pie? Enjoy the read and I’ll see you in 2022! Cheers

AVOIDING FALLS AT HOME
D
id you know that thirty percent of people aged 65 and over will fall at least once a year? And for those aged 80 and over it is 50 per cent? These startling statistics are reported by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence). However, there’s good news as there are simple things we can do to avoid falls at home and reduce the risk of injury and potential hospital stays. Here are some facts and tips to stay safe at home, especially important now as most falls occur when it becomes darker earlier in the evenings. Fall Facts n Over 60% of falls happen in the home. n Falls that result in hospital admission cost an average £5000 each time, weighing heavy on the NHS. n In the UK, falls are the most common cause of injury related deaths in people over the age of 75. n Ten per cent of hip-fracture patients will die within one month of their fracture, 30 per cent will die within a year and there are 13,800 hip-fracture-related deaths a year in the UK. n Falls can have an impact on confidence, increase isolation and reduce independence. What are some causes of falls? Sensory and balance problems The normal changes of aging such as poor eyesight, poor hearing. Illness and physical conditions can affect strength and balance. Also, loss of muscle, mobility and poor balance. Medication Medication can produce side effects which can alter balance and lead to falls. e.g. medications for high blood pressure, diabetes and heart conditions can cause unsteadiness. Falls are
10 | SKBramhall & Woodford - November/December 2021
more likely if you are taking four or more medicines. Home hazards Check for indoor hazards such as internal steps, rugs on the floor, slippery tiles in the bathroom. Make sure there’s adequate lighting between the bed and the bathroom and toilet at night. Wear suitable shoes that fit correctly, do not walk in socks. Don’t forget garden and outside hazards such as outside steps without handrails or are slippery, and uneven footpaths. Tips on how to prevent falls n Before getting out of bed, sit on the side for a moment before standing, allowing blood pressure to adjust to limit dizziness. n If there is a walking aid in place, use it e.g. a frame or walking stick. n Have handrails put on both sides of the stairways. n Grabrails are useful in the bathroom and entrances to the home. n Consider having a falls pendent alarm. n Do not put electrical cords across pathways. n Drinking enough fluids. n Take medication as prescribed. n Maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, exercise may prevent joint and muscle weakening.

BRAMHALL & WOODFORD ROTARY CLUB - SANTA’S CHRISTMAS VILLAGE TOUR
S
anta will be out and about on his annual Village Tour but he will still be in his imaginary bubble with everyone s taying safe. As ever, Santa’s Elves have been very busy. Not only have they been preparing the Float to take Santa on his annual tour but they have also been checking out the routes around the villages. Santa will begin his Tour in his sleigh on Saturday 4th December, on Bramhall and Woodford Rotary Club’s Float, and will then be out and about for 16 nights in Bramhall, Woodford and Cheadle Hulme inviting the children to post a letter saying what they would REALLY like for Christmas. Once again he will be visiting the Woodford Garden Village to see the boys and girls there. The Christmas Float is a well known fund raiser which has been in existence for over forty years
raising thousands of pounds for many deserving causes in that time. This year sixteen local organisations and charities will be visiting most of the streets in the area with Santa and helping him with the collection. Please encourage your young ones to write a letter to Santa so that when you hear or see the Float they can pop it into his post box. A number of local businesses have very kindly donated to support Santa. Leaflets will be delivered to your door during November and local social media sites will carry details of the night when he will be coming to your street to pick up your Christmas wish list and bring you some early Christmas goodies. Don’t forget to track him with the SantaTracker on our website www.bwrotary.org , with daily information on the Facebook page (Bramhall and Woodford Rotary).
NEW FOR TWENTYONE – ‘THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS JIGSAW PUZZLE QUIZ & TRAIL’ For the younger generation:Christmas is a time for families to gather together and do a Christmas jigsaw. Only one of the days will have all four pieces on show. Tell us which day it is and you could be the winner of a super prize. For the adults:There are 25 questions which are all related to the words of the Christmas song, The Twelve Days of Christmas. How many can you answer?
12 | SKBramhall & Woodford - November/December 2021
Most correct answers wins a fabulous prize. The Trail will start 27th November and finish 18th December. In the event of a tie a winner will be drawn with the judges decision being final. Entry forms are available, for a small fee, from participating locations and any profits will go to charity. They will also be available at the Bramhall Methodist Church Charity Card Sale on November 6th (10am – 12.30) when the Club will also be selling stocking filler toys and games. USING RECLAIMED AND RECYCLED FURNITURE
rom a mid-century daybed to an upcycled vintage suitcase coffee table, reclaimed and recycled furniture and accessories are a big hit in the right place. There are lots of positives to using reclamation less landfill, preventing the harvesting of new trees as well as avoiding the use of environmental hazards to manufacture new products. Another is your neighbour/friend/ sister-in-law can’t pop out and pick one up. If you’re concerned about the ecological values of using old furniture and accessories, try the reclaimed and salvage yards as generally these items come right from where they were found to where you’re going to use it and aren’t altered in any way. An old church bench, a wrought iron gate or a Tudor stone fireplace will be exactly that in your home. Recycling something gives you the chance to put your own stamp on it (or somebody with amazing skill and style has already done it) and you have an item perfect for you. Rather than wander aimlessly around salvage fairs, think about what you need. Reclaimed shelves, picture frames, fireplace lintels are easy pick ups but how about a curved sofa or a
14 | SKBramhall & Woodford - November/December 2021
kitchen island? You can ask the traders who may be able to point you in the right direction for your treasure. Think about how you can create something and look beyond the current condition. A vintage tennis racket could be made into a mirror or a tatty lamp could be transformed with a different shade and a lick of paint. OK I said about wandering aimlessly but sometimes you just see something and fall in love, if it grabs your heart I’m afraid, for me anyway, it grabs my purse. A rug could be a wall hanging, a boat’s steering oar could be a shelf, how about a gorgeous wooden door as a bed head? Your imagination can make anything you like from something you’re drawn to, it’s whether your own skills are enough to create it or if you’ll need some help. Take a trip to a salvage yard and go for it. Let me know if you need any help.

BRAMHALL GOLF CLUB MIXED GOLF
B
est wishes from the mixed organisers at Bramhall Golf Club.
Bramhall Golf Club has a fantastic number of mixed players who have attended events throughout 2021. Many are husband and wife pairs, however we also have a large number of couples made up from the Men’s and Ladies’ sections and we actively encourage participation in mixed golf. Whilst the competitions have couples vying for prizes, the main emphasis behind mixed golf at Bramhall is to continue to develop the excellent social side of the club. This not only helps new members meet others in competitive play but gives them opportunities to socialise too as there are informal meals following every event. One of our most popular events is the monthly Nine Wine and Dine where 9 holes of golf is followed by an excellent meal and even better conversation.

If you are interested in learning more about Bramhall Golf Club, in the first instance please contact Rachel or Karen in the office on 0161 439 6092, extension 1 and they will be pleased to show you around our fantastic facilities. In the meantime, we wish you every success in your golf endeavours.” Kind regards Stephen and Rosa Sheard
ADVERTORIAL
“Rosa and I have had the pleasure of arranging mixed events for the last three years but we are retiring from these duties this year to concentrate on other roles within the club.
Mixed Golf promotes the Club ethos in endeavouring to be the friendliest and most family oriented golf club in the area and forms the mainstay of our extensive social calendar. Rarely is there an event on our social calendar that is not a sell-out.

W
e are once again pleased to hear that JUST HELPING will be running their annual Christmas Tree collection in the South and West Manchester area including SK7 & SK8. The 2021 St Ann’s Hospice Christmas Tree collection takes place from 13th to 16th January 2022. The collection is in aid of St Ann’s Hospice, who are celebrating their 50th birthday this year, and other local charities. You can register your tree from 15th November 2021 . online at www. charityxmastreecollection.com The collection has been run by community volunteers, sponsors and donors for nearly 10 years in partnership with St Ann’s Hospice who receive 85% of the net proceeds. The average donation is around £15 per tree. The 2021 collection raised over £50k for St Ann’s Hospice in their 50th year! Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of St Ann’s, said: “This year we’re celebrating our We’re approaching our 50th birthday at St Ann’s Hospice. We’re proud to be one of the oldest and largest hospices in the UK, in 2021 and the fact that we’re still here after half a century and still able to support local patients is down to the amazing support of our local communities. Everyone who makes a donation really does enable us to keep our doors open and allows us to continue to provide specialist care to those who need it most. Thank you.” Emma Dixon, Director of Clinical Services at St Ann’s Hospice, said: “Our teams continue to work tirelessly on the front line to make sure that patients and their loved ones can access the care they need. This has been a really hard year for all of us, especially at the hospice where our teams have been working tirelessly on the front line to make sure that patients and their loved ones can access the care they need.
26 | SKBramhall & Woodford - November/December 2021
We’ve adapted and grown our services to ensure they still meet the needs of those who rely on us for specialist hospice care, and can only continue to do so thanks to the support of local people. Please do consider registering your tree and making a donation so we can continue to provide care into 2022 and beyond.” Dr Paul Jarvis, Director of Business Development at St Ann’s Hospice, said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has really hit us hard at St Ann’s, with many of our fundraising events and activities cancelled. As an organisation, we need to raise around £20,000 a day to keep our services running, and we need the support of our local communities now more than ever. We can only keep our doors open if we continue to raise the money we need - the care of patients both now and in the future is reliant on your support, so thank you for taking part in this Christmas tree scheme. We really appreciate everything you do for St Ann’s and the people we care for.” Why have JUST HELPING recycle your Christmas Tree away in 2022? You don’t have to put it in your own car and have to clean up the mess! All trees are recycled in an environmentallyfriendly way. Your donation goes to local notn- for-profit organisations with 80% going to St Ann’s Hospice. It’s a WIN-WIN for all! www.charityxmastreecollection.com If you are able to help us with the collection, whether by sponsorship or leaflet distribution (maybe on your road or estate) or through social media with friends and neighbours or on the collection days with a van or your labour please get in touch at https://just-helping.org.uk/ contact/

Charity News CHARITY CHRISTMAS CARD SHOPS SET TO RE-OPEN FOR 2021
T
CELEBRATING ITS 50TH YEAR
he Combined Charities Christmas card shops will reopen this year with a big fanfare to celebrate 50 years of trading and raising over £5.5m during this time. The planned shops for 2020 had to be cancelled just 3 days before the official openings due to the UK being placed back into lockdown. Sheila Hallas MBE and her amazing group of volunteers were not to be deterred and the team plodded on making plans for 2021. Returning late October and early November, the 4 shops will have a large choice and variety of cards from all our charities that you can purchase from. The gifts and novelties range, which help pay for the shops’ costs, will also have lots to offer. This means that by selling the gifts, all cost associated with the shops are covered and every single penny from the sale of the Christmas cards goes straight back to the charity.
“It’s a great feeling to be back doing what we enjoy and helping others in the process” said Sheila, “following last year’s disappointment of not being able to open at the critical point when many charities were really struggling due to covid and needed all the help they could get, we are thrilled to be back. We do of course have covid safe protocols in place so customers and volunteers can be assured we are doing all we can to keep everyone safe.” The card shops have various opening dates from 30th October and will trade until early December at Wilmslow, Macclesfield, and Altrincham Libraries and at The Curzon Cinema in Knutsford. Please look at the website for exact opening dates and times and you’ll also find a good variety of cards to buy on the website. www.christmas-cards.org.uk

Health & Wellbeing
MANAGING PELVIC PAIN
M
any men and women struggle silently with ongoing pelvic pain. There are many possible causes of this. Pelvic pain is described as pain below your belly button. It can be in your abdomen and also in the genital area. New pain should always be investigated, so do contact your GP. Pain lasting more than 6 months is referred to as chronic pelvic pain [CPP]. Once all investigations have cleared any sinister causes, it may be worth seeking some professional help. Traditional physiotherapy techniques can be helpful. These can include soft tissue release, relaxation, breathing, lifestyle advice or even acupuncture. Occasionally, pelvic pain can link back to an earlier traumatic life event and people’s bodies can have a physical response to a psychological experience. This can also be helped by a practitioner specially trained in this area.
A simple way to help this situation is to try this exercise. n Try to let your tummy relax and watch as
you take a deep breath letting it expand. This gives some space for your breathing muscle, the diaphragm, to dome down allowing your lower lungs to expand. It feels quite different. n Now take normal
sized breaths and concentrate just your breathing for a few minutes.
n Try to do this each
day as evidence tells us that this affects the central nervous system and can reduce pain and anxiety.
If you search ‘Breathing exercises for stress NHS’ you will find a simple guide to doing this each day. Make it part of your routine. Take care, have a happy Christmas and a healthy, relaxed New Year.
As we head towards the celebration of Christmas, it is noticeable how much more stressed and anxious people become. This can also be a cause of pelvic or abdominal pain. When people are anxious, they don’t breathe properly. They take short, shallow breaths just using their upper lungs, raising their shoulders and pulling their tummies in. This doesn’t help chest, abdominal or pelvic function.

November Recipe
’m writing this on the morning of the first frost of winter. I’ve put the heating on and all I want to do is snuggle down with my cat. It made me think of comfort food for this months recipe. This is a dessert I made a couple of weeks ago but it really is more suitable for the colder months. I’m sure many of you already know how to make it but it was so delicious I thought I’d encourage you to give it a go again.
GOLDEN SYRUP STEAMED PUDDING ENOUGH FOR 6 LARGE HELPINGS. 200g softened butter 3 tbsps of golden syrup 200g caster sugar 1 tsp of vanilla paste 3 beaten eggs 200g self raising flour Grease a 1.2ltr pudding basin with a little of the butter and pour the golden syrup into the base. Using a mixer or an electric hand whisk beat the sugar and the butter together until it’s light and fluffy. Add the vanilla paste and then the eggs a
32 | SKBramhall & Woodford - November/December 2021
little at a time until you have a nice batter. Add the self raising flour and just stir in to make sure it’s all combined but don’t overwork it. Pour the mixture into the pudding basin on top of the syrup. Cut a piece of greaseproof paper a lot wider than the rim of the basin and make a pleat down the middle and do the same with a piece of foil. Put them both together with the greaseproof paper under and place over the pudding and tie firmly with a bit of string. Put a saucer upside down in a large pan (big enough to hold the basin) and put the basin on top. Pour in enough boiling water to come half way up the basin then simmer for 11/2 to 2 hours with a lid on. Make sure it’s cooked by sticking a skewer into the middle – it should come out clean. Up turn the pudding onto a plate and serve with some lovely custard.

Happy Holidays
inter is a wonderful time to create warm quilted projects. If you’re new to quilting, you’ll find the Twisted Pole Table Runner is an easy but effective project to make. Set around the Maypole festivities and goes by other names, Ribbon Pole and Ribbon Dance. It’s an age-old popular design and I think you’ll love it.
A pack of Fat Quarters will be great for a slightly smaller
first marking a diagonal across the middle to help you, then cut the squares on the diagonal. When you open up each sewn piece, you will have sewn a new square made up of 2 different coloured triangles; Sew all your new squares together, in the order as on your grid and you will have created a patchwork ribbon pole. Cut the border fabric into 2”/5cm strips, sew this all the way around your patchwork. Press this all down and you can sew this onto a wadding or even Thermofleece to make your table runner heat proof, ready to take hot casserole dishes fresh from the oven. Place your backing onto the runner, good sides together, sew all the way around the edges, leaving a 10cm turning hole. Use 1cm seam allowance. Once you have turned the runner through, top stitch all around the edge.
Cut your fabric into 4” Squares (10cm). You will need 36 in all.
You can watch a video tutorial on Abi’s Den YouTube channel.
18 squares needed for the ribbon
Have a wonderful time over the coming season and see you in the New Year!
Make this for your Christmas setting, you can make smaller versions to use as placemats. For the Runner, draw a grid, 3 by 12 squares. You will need 0.25m x 120cm wide fabric 0.25m 120cm wide fabric 0.25m 120cm wide fabric) 0.5m 120cm wide fabric for the back 0.25m 120 for border

Club News 1ST BRAMHALL BROWNIES AND GUIDES CELEBRATED THEIR 100TH BIRTHDAY THIS YEAR. Being the first guide unit in Bramhall to be registered with Girl Guiding HQ London on the 4th of February 1921, hence them known as 1st Bramhall. An occasion not to be overlooked, rainbows, brownies, guides and leaders from past and present joined together at Benja Fold Centenary Hall (the 3rd hall on the site in 100 years) in September to mark the occasion with a big birthday party. Our oldest member in attendance at 92 and our youngest at 5, all joined together for cake and refreshments and activities for the girls, including a magician, face painting by Sarah North, herself being an ex guide over 50 years ago, bouncy castles and pebble painting, and the
weather was surprisingly kind. It was lovely to look through photos of bygone times, and for the current girls to share their guiding stories with the much older previous members where we established just how guiding has changed over the last 100 years. Whilst guiding has changed over the 100 years the mission remains the same which is whoever they are, wherever they’re from, girls and young women can do amazing things - we give them the chance through fun, friendship, challenge and adventure we empower girls to find their voice, inspiring them to discover the best in themselves and to make a positive difference in their community. A huge thanks to all that came along to celebrate.
ST ANN’S HOSPICE RECEIVE CHEQUE FOR £22,000 FROM BRAMALL PARK GOLF CLUB On Tuesday 31st August the CEO of St Ann’s Hospice, Rachel McMillan along with Greg Kelly and Sarah Wolstenholme, Community Fundraisers, met with the Captains of Bramall Park Golf Club, Patricia Philip and Simon Wheatley, to receive a donation cheque to the sum of £22,000. In June each year Bramall Park Golf Club hosts an Amateur golfing competition with all proceeds going to the hospice. This year 59 teams paid to enter which was a record 236 players on the day. Despite the weather being rather wet and windy the players bravely faced the challenge of the course. The halfway house was a welcome stopping point where players could enjoy a drink and delicious homemade cakes followed by a BBQ and a few celebratory drinks when they got back to the clubhouse. As a sign of support and appreciation for the hospice the collection tins were full to the brim with cash donations.

There was a fabulous raffle and an auction with over 70 prizes; all donated by club members and local businesses from the Bramhall and Cheadle Hulme area. Thanks go to club members and players who purchased raffle tickets and to those who placed generous bids against the auction prizes. The proceeds from the raffle and auction all contributed towards the fabulous total raised on the day. Captain Simon Wheatley said “ Bramall Park Golf Club and its members remain very committed to continuing to raise as much money as possible for St Ann’s Hospice and we already have a date in the diary of 24th June to host the event next year. If you are interested in advertising, sponsoring, donating a prize or entering a team please contact Jill Thomas on jill.thomas5057@gmail.com”.

Pilates is a great way to stay fit this winter
uring the bleak winter months, it’s easy to let outdoor activities slide. Therefore, you need a fun indoor way of exercising that will ultimately help you achieve your goals. But before you jump into Pilates exercises, you might want to take a moment to gain a little insight into what Pilates is (and isn’t), and what makes it unique. Pilates really is a beginner-friendly fitness system. Indeed, the adaptability of Pilates exercises for different body types and fitness levels is one of its primary benefits. There are countless ways to modify and adapt Pilates exercises, depending on your age, weight, physical ability, and level of fitness. The exercises are designed with modifications so that people of all levels and abilities can stay safe while being physically challenged. If you’re wondering whether Pilates is right for you, it’s important to consider what it is you’re aiming to achieve. Strengthening your core can help alleviate pain and discomfort in the lower back while developing whole-body strength could improve your performance in another sport or physical activity. If you’re looking for a low-impact exercise that can promote overall health, weight loss, and weight management, Pilates may serve your needs. You’re bound to get stronger, improve your balance, and increase your awareness of your body and how it moves as a result. Pilates Matwork Classes The most popular form of Pilates is matwork. This more traditional form of Pilates has

developed to incorporated the use of equipment such as balls, stretch bands, foam rollers or magic circles. High Intensity Power Pilates HIP Pilates is a more dynamic form of Pilates that combines the precision and focus of a traditional Pilates session with the dynamic energy of a high intensity workout. Combining core strength, balance and coordination with an energetic cardiovascular element HIP Pilates is the answer to many people’s search for a functional ‘feel good’ workout. The class is fast paced, but importantly LOW impact. Therefore, you will increase your heart rate safely whilst burning fat and building lean muscle mass. The class also uses light hand weights, which improve bone health. Attending regular Pilates classes can help you develop good postural habits and a strong core. So, whether you choose an online or face to face class, Pilates is for life and can be life changing!

Can veneers be an option for you? A drill free, injection free, pain free smile makeover that can be done in just one appointment. This was one of the many cases that we have done where we have used composite bonding to transform a patient’s smile, and these amazing results were achieved in just one visit to the practice. We used composite edge bonding over a single session to give the patient’s teeth straighter edges and a smoother surface appearance, and also cover the discolouration and flecking. This created a natural, aligned smile without having to damage the patient’s own teeth. This is a popular simple and very effective treatment that we offer. It is reversible and the beauty of it is that it can take years off your smile, without the need for undergoing long, invasive and costly procedures. If you would like to know more about this treatment, or any others that we offer, please give us a on 0161-486-0743 to book in for a free non-obligation consultation. You can also see lots of examples of our work, as well as lots of information videos about various treatments following our Instagram page, @churchrddental.
