EXCEPTIONAL FROM START TO FINISH “Incredibly pleased with the renovation work by Spring Decorating. The work involved the replastering of several rooms, replacing internal doors, bannisters, spindles, radiators and then redecorating. All f inished to a very high standard, which I am delighted with. The team was professional, eff icient and f riendly. I wouldn’t hesitate to have them back in the future.” Review verif ied by Which? Trusted Traders

TIPS TO DECORATE FOR CHRISTMAS

L

ots of us have had the same decorations for Christmas for years. Here are some tips to elevate your festive décor this year and make a different look for yourselves and visitors. If you edit what you have, use them in unexpected places, forage for berries and greenery and dig out some ribbons, it will look gorgeous and unique. Move things around – put your wreath on an internal window, better still if you have 3 for one room. You can add dried orange slices and lots of greenery from a woodland ramble. You could gather twigs together and tie with brown string in the middle and entwine ferns and some tree decorations on them to hang in your window. Create a wow entrance – that garland that’s usually on your mantel, drape it down the stairs with pine cones, acorns, berries and a long ribbon to add glamour. It’s OK if it only goes half way up, you could add a star at the top of it and it will look like it’s meant to stop there. You could gather small bowls of red berries, small kraft wrapped boxes tied with white string and candles (battery operated there) to complete a fantastic entrance that will have you excited to come home or welcome visitors. Add lights inside – they’re not just for the Christmas tree. You can never have enough lights. I start at the plug socket and see where

it takes me. Over and under books, pictures and around door frames. The Christmas Table – we can’t forget the dining table. You can dress it for the whole season and add to it as you go. A theme is lovely, perhaps woodland

with greenery and cinnamon sticks and red berries dotted through. Maybe maximalism with large baubles bedded on cotton wool and twigs. Whatever your style, give yourself lots of time and you’ll have so much fun. The children can definitely get involved finding and making things to tie in. Have an afternoon spray painting or making pom poms, it’s a memory they’ll cherish.

BEAT THE WINTER BLUES WITH PILATES! If exercising outdoors in the cold isn’t something you’re willing to do, how about joining a Pilates Class? But before you jump into Pilates exercises, you might want to take a moment to gain a little insight into what Pilates is (and isn’t), and what makes it unique. Pilates really is a beginner-friendly fitness system. Indeed, the adaptability of Pilates exercises for different body types and fitness levels is one of its primary benefits. If you’re wondering whether Pilates is right for you, it’s important to consider what it is you’re aiming to achieve. Strengthening your core can help alleviate pain and discomfort in the lower back while developing whole-body strength could improve your performance in another sport or physical activity. If you’re looking for a low-impact exercise that can promote overall health, weight loss, and weight management, Pilates may serve your needs. You’re bound to get stronger, improve your balance, and increase your awareness of your body and how it moves as a result. Matwork Classes The most popular and easily accessible form of Pilates is matwork. This more traditional form of Pilates has developed to incorporated the use of equipment such as balls, stretch bands, foam rollers or magic circles. Reformer on the Mat using the Pilates Resistance Tube This a challenging and physically demanding form of matwork. When transferring the reformer exercises on to the mat, effectively removing the support or resistance of the machine a whole new repertoire of exercises emerges. In some cases, the exercises become more challenging because the body no longer has the assistance

14 | SKBramhall & Woodford - November/December 2023

of the spring and reformer frame, but in other cases the exercises become easier when they are performed on the stable surface of the mat. In most cases the exercises become significantly more challenging as the weight of the legs are no longer supported by the springs and the foot bar. High Intensity Power Pilates HIP Pilates is a more dynamic form of Pilates that combines the precision and focus of a traditional Pilates session with the dynamic energy of a high intensity workout. Combining core strength, balance and coordination with an energetic cardiovascular element HIP Pilates is the answer to many people’s search for a functional ‘feel good’ workout. The class is fast paced, but importantly LOW impact. Therefore, you will increase your heart rate safely whilst burning fat and building lean muscle mass. The class also uses light hand weights, which improve bone health. Attending regular Pilates classes can help you develop good postural habits and a strong core. So, whichever version of Pilates you choose, remember Pilates is for life and can be life changing!

Beef short ribs with a Bourbon BBQ sauce This is a real winter warmer – it’s really easy and uses a relatively cheap cut of beef to make it a great addition to your arsenal. I’ve cooked this for family and also for a bit of a do. The quantity here is for 4 but it’s really easy to multiply up (or down) The big supermarkets don’t usually stock beef short ribs but your butcher will be able to get them for you and Waitrose normally has them.

Beef short ribs with a Bourbon BBQ sauce.

4 chunky beef short ribs – beware the packs sometimes have a big one and a little one hiding. 5 sticks of celery roughly chopped, a big carrot halved an onion halved and some fresh parsley (this is for the braise and will be chucked away after so don’t waste time being neat) Put all the above ingredients into a large pan and cover with water. (I have done it with Coke (original not sugar free) and it was good too) Bring it up to the boil then reduce to a small simmer, put the lid on and leave it for about 3 hours. When the meat is falling off the bones lift it out and throw away the veg (you could strain the liquid to make a stock if you wanted to) In the meantime make the sauce: Good glug of olive oil 2 onions sliced 15cm piece of fresh ginger (I quite often 16 | SKBramhall & Woodford - November/December 2023

used the jars of grated ginger from the Asian supermarket in which case 2 teaspoons) 5 cloves of garlic crushed 300g brown sugar 100ml soy sauce 4 tbsps red wine vinegar 500ml tomato ketchup 2 tbsp tomato paste 200ml bourbon whiskey Fry the onions in the oil for about 8 minutes on a medium heat – you want them to soften not fry. Add the ginger and garlic and after a couple of minutes add the rest of the ingredients then leave if to bubble nicely for a few minutes. At this point I usually put the ribs into a small roasting tray and pour over the sauce and it waits until I’m ready to serve. When you’re 30 minutes away from wanting to serve put the oven on to 220c (gas 7) and when it’s come up to heat put the roasting tin in and cook for 20 mins. I normally serve this with baked potatoes and some peas and corn. A nice Malbec would be good as would a robust beer.

CHARITY CHRISTMAS CARD SHOPS POP UP AGAIN THIS YEAR Helping Local Charities Raise Funds this Festive Season

W

e’re Back! For over 50 years, the Charity Christmas Card Shops have provided an opportunity for people to support their favourite local charities simply by purchasing Christmas cards. This year, the volunteer-run shops will once again give 100% of card sales to over 35 charities, local and national, including health and childrens’ charities, medical research and animal charities. Founded in 1971, the Christmas Card Shops have raised more than £6 million for local charities. The shops are open annually from late October to early December, and carry a wide selection of Christmas cards, wrapping paper, tags, and other Christmas gifts and novelties. Each charity represented in the shops provides volunteers to help operate the shop, with all proceeds from their sales going directly back to support their important work in the community.

18 | SKBramhall & Woodford - November/December 2023

“The Combined Charities Christmas Card Shops are a fixture of the Wilmslow community and embody the spirit of giving during the holidays,” said Sheila Hallas MBE, founder. “For decades, residents have supported their favourite causes simply by purchasing greeting cards and gifts. Thanks to the generosity of our customers and volunteers, we have been able to raise millions of pounds for local charities and make a meaningful impact. “This year we have shops in Wilmslow, Macclesfield, Knutsford and Sale libraries. Please call in to see our wonderful selection” Please look at the website for locations, opening dates and times of each shop.

ADVERTORIAL

2023 has been a great year for Bramhall Golf Club and its members with some key investment made in infrastructure and facilities. It would however be very remiss not to celebrate the successes of the competitive golfers amongst the members. Daniel Hayes, Bramhall’s rising star shot the courses lowest ever recorded Gross score in May. Daniel carded a very impressive Gross 62 which included 8 birdies and no bogies. Daniel Hayes In June Joe Kirwan won our Course Record 62 coveted Captains Weekend competition which is one of the few majors played over 36 Holes. Stuart Wilkinson who joined Bramhall in 2021, has been putting in the hours of practice over the last twelve months and managed to take Captain’s Day 23 the spoils in the Presidents Joe Kirwan Weekend Competition, pipping 2nd place Mike Wright by 1 point over the 36 holes with a fantastic second 18 of 40 points helping secure the victory. Bramhall’s growing lady’s section is equally competitive with some impressive golf played Pres Day 23 Stuart Wilkinson amongst them this year. Linda McKenzie finished top of the leaderboard on Lady Captains Day with Carol Coulson taking the crown on Mr Captain for ladies’ day. Carol Coulson

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE THE INCORPORATION OF A PROPERTY RENTAL BUSINESS

A

s interest rates push up mortgage repayments, owning a property with the intention of renting it is becoming a less profitable venture; particularly since the relief that individuals can claim for mortgage interest relief has been reduced in recent years. The outcome of this has been a decline in privately owned rented properties which was highlighted in a recent report by the CBRE which described that the UK rental market had shrunk by 400,000 homes since 2016. Some landlords have been considering incorporating their property portfolio to avoid the mortgage interest restrictions and in this article we consider the main tax issues arising on transferring and operating your property rental business through a company. The first difficulty is the actual transfer of the properties to the company which will usually generate a tax charge. The individual will normally have to pay Capital Gains Tax based on the market value of the properties. A relief from this tax charge can apply in limited circumstances but this involves arguing that the individual spends sufficient time actively managing the properties, rather than just being a passive recipient of investment income. Stamp Duty Land Tax will also be payable by the company on the transfer of the properties. Although there is an exemption for partnerships transferring property to a company, HMRC will expect a genuine partnership to exist to claim this relief. Joint ownership of property does not, in itself, create a partnership and you will need to show that each partner is actively involved in managing the properties. Ideally a partnership agreement would exist and the partnership would have been in existence for a number of years to reduce the risk of challenge by HMRC. Whilst individuals can be taxed at up to 45% on their rental profits, the rates of tax for a company are actually not considerably more 26 | SKBramhall & Woodford - November/December 2023

favourable due to the fact that there will be double taxation; first corporation tax is levied on the company at a rate of potentially 25%; and then again, tax will be due when the individual extracts the company’s rental profits as dividends. However, if the individual does not require all of their rental profits for their dayto-day needs, then a company can be useful to shelter the profits until they are needed in the future. If all the rental profits will be habitually drawn from the company, then incorporation will probably result in more tax being due overall. While the restriction of relief for mortgage interest has definitely been an incentive for some to incorporate their letting business, remember that individuals still can receive relief for their mortgage interest at the basic rate of 20% rather than at their highest rate of tax. While not ideal, this is still not too terrible when considering that a company may only be able to claim relief for the mortgage interest at 19%, From a taxation perspective, incorporating a property portfolio doesn’t always make financial sense, although individual circumstances may make it worthwhile for some. Of course, tax is only one issue that needs to be considered. The protection of limited liability and the relative ease of transferring shares are some of the reasons incorporation is still a viable option for many. As always, you should speak with your accountant to better understand how your circumstances might be affected. Peter Bevan Bevan & Co, Chartered Accountants peter@bevan.co.uk

SHOES SHOES SHOES

aving recently been taken to see the ‘Barbie’ movie by my daughter (I did secretly find it fun and thought provoking), it led me to think about shoes and their impact on women’s and men’s bodies. There are many challenges to our bodies from footwear, especially if we spend long periods in high heels or badly fitting shoes. High heels always look amazing in their design and how they change the contour of our legs and posture. Wearing high heels for short periods of time is never usually an issue however if worn all day, every day, problems may ensue. There are postural and mechanical changes that happen, the calves shorten as do the hamstrings and anterior hip muscles. The curves of the spine become exaggerated. These changes can create aches and pains as the muscles tire and the joints become inflamed as they have to function differently. Alternatively if you go from wearing high heels a lot to suddenly changing to flat shoes or bare feet the shortened areas have to try to open out and other aches and pains can develop! If you put your foot into a tight or ill-fitting shoe – it creates local mechanical issues within the foot. The discomfort may then make you alter how you hold your foot and walk. This again can give local pain or pains in other areas of the foot and spine as function changes. People can experience a wide range of symptoms from footwear. • Big toe joints can become stiff and painful from getting squashed or taking too much weight from being in high heels. • The balls of the feet can similarly be affected. • The arches of the feet can have ‘plantar fasciitis’ – pain down the arch of the feet. • The achilles tendon can become painful from being over-stretched after it has been in a shortened state with high heels and then asked to lengthen in flat shoes. • Calves/hamstrings and fronts of the pelvis can become very tight and painful if in high shoes consistently or particularly if people suddenly go into flat shoes. • The lower back, mid back or neck can becomevery painful adapting to postural changes.

28 | SKBramhall & Woodford - November/December 2023

• You can even become prone to headaches! It would be a huge shame to take glamour out of our shoe collection so as with most things in life, a variety of footwear is probably ideal. Make sure you have great sport footwear suited to whatever sport you play. Get your foot size checked and ask advice on styles to suit your feet. Wear high heels for special occasions but keep a flatter pair handy to swap into – always great for parties avoiding dancing for long periods in heels. As the night goes on no-one notices what is on our feet! The recent trend for glamorous trainers are a great alternative to heels. They can now be worn with lovely dresses as well as trousers. It actually isn’t good to wear totally flat shoes all the time, either a wedge or small heel is also a good alternative. The main thing is continue enjoying your shoes – they add individual character and glamour to our outfits! In Bramhall we are lucky enough to have three brilliant shoe shops with owners and staff that are more than happy to give advice and check the fit, so you end up with the perfect pair. STAY CONNECTED DURING WINTER

uring the winter the colder days and darker nights naturally force us to spend more time indoors. This means we are likely to spend time interacting with other people which can lead to a sense of loneliness and isolation. Use technology to connect, if you can. FaceTime or Zoom calls with family and friends are a great way to stay connected with loved ones. In many cases they are free to use too. Making arrangements to have a video call on a specific day and time of the week will be something to look forward to and plan for. You could arrange a call after a favourite TV programme, sporting event or film to share and discuss the content or results. Figures show that internet use among older people is increasing, however this group are still less likely to use the internet than their younger counterparts, with nearly four million people over 65 having never used the internet (Age UK 2018). Research also highlights that people who do not use the internet are more likely to feel isolated from others; this is particularly so for those who are less mobile. If you don’t have the technology but are interested in becoming connected in this way Age UK has a variety of different digital inclusion projects, including one-to-one support, classroom based services and community awareness sessions. Ask for help if you need it. Most of us will experience feelings of loneliness at some point in our lives. When you feel lonely it can be tempting to think nobody would want to hear from you. But often you’ll find people do want

32 | SKBramhall & Woodford - November/December 2023

to help. If there are people around you who you can talk to, it can be a good idea to talk about your feelings. This might seem like a difficult conversation to have, but actually talking is often the best way to start feeling better. Talking to someone you know could let them try and help you, while they may not necessarily have the answer it can make you feel listened to and often an outside perspective can really help. Talking to people is a great way to relive old memories and remind you of all the positive things in your life. If there isn’t anyone you can talk to you could take advantage of services that tackle loneliness. Age UK’s Telephone Friendship Services allows you to sign up for a free weekly friendly call. It can be a great way to speak to someone new. The Silver Line also offers weekly calls to people aged 55 and over. This is a free service for people looking to have a chat with a friendly and supportive volunteer. For more information visit www.ageuk.org.uk www.thesilverline.org.uk

Looking back to the Seventies

ecent warm weather has transported me back to the lovely warm summers of India, styles around Manchester remind me of the seventies and bringing the two together, it’s only right that I ask you to get ready to groove as we travel back to the swinging seventies, a time of bell-bottoms, disco tunes, and shiny stretch fabrics with an Indian twist.

The seventies was the era of transformation. It brought worldwide change, and India was no different. This postindependence period saw sewing become not just a skill but a path to selfexpression and empowerment for fashionistas, designers and artists. In India, the seventies were all about blending Western fashion with traditional Indian styles. Bell-bottoms, tie-dye, and maxi dresses were all the rage, often given an Indian flair through local craftsmanship. The result? Outfits that were as unique as a snowflake in a disco blizzard. Indian sewers always had a unique and colourful palette of fabrics to choose from for their natural fibres like cotton and silk. These remained popular but synthetic textiles started gaining ground as the western world demanded this for their own markets. Adding a dash of spice to seventies fashion, India introduced this fashion to their demographic through Bollywood. Patchwork, block prints and hand embroidery have always been successful design traits in 34 | SKBramhall & Woodford - November/December 2023

India adding their own unique bohemian touch to traditional clothing. No two people wore the same garment. Indian artisans mixed and matched fabrics, creating exquisite pieces. Every saree, kurta, and shawl tells its own story. For many, sewing was, and still is, a path to financial independence, especially in rural towns. Many households invested in sewing machines, empowering individuals to create clothing for their families or start small tailoring businesses.

The American Singer Sewing Machines were popular in India, but India has its own sewing machine champion, Usha, established in 1936, based on a Pfaff machine. These local brands offered reliable machines to homes and businesses across the nation. Sewing in seventies India was a blend of global fashion and local tradition. It was a time when craftsmanship and modern style danced hand in hand. As we reminisce about this vibrant era, we celebrate the creativity, empowerment, and cultural fusion that made sewing in India during the seventies truly extraordinary. So, dust off your sewing machine and stitch a groovy blend of past and present, because the spirit of the seventies still inspires every stitch in India and beyond! https://www.facebook.com/AbisSewingDen/ @Abis.Den Machine Services www.Abisden.Com YouTube https://www.youtube.com/c/AbisDen http://abisden.blogspot.co.uk

Mindset Advice

DISAPPOINTMENT REQUIRES ADEQUATE PLANNING The seasons mean different things to different people, and everyone probably has a favourite for their own reasons. Today I want to talk about one of my favourite quotes: “Disappointment requires adequate planning” I find myself saying it all the time to clients dealing with some form of dispute or fall out. It means that we are only ever disappointed when our expectations of any particular outcome are not met, i.e. disappointment is generated within, it cannot happen TO us. A quick fix would be to adjust our expectations down, and therefore not feel such disappointment… But in reality, expecting much less from the world and everyone in it is a fairly negative and sad way to live. The way to use this statement positively is to consider the anticipated situation or event, then realistically, and without emotional interference, predict the most probable outcome. If we adjust our expectations in line with reality, we will still be pleasantly surprised if the outcome is better than expected, but if it is not, we cannot be disappointed. For example: If you parents have disappointed you many times, to continually expect them to be better, kinder, more supportive or more helpful than they have ever been will lead to perpetual disappointment. This is avoidable. There are some “life coaches” that insist we cut all “toxic” people from our lives, surrounding ourselves exclusively with those who adore us and bring only joy… The more realistic coaches among us know that all humans have limitations, none are perfect. Everyone has their own stresses and struggles, many of them private. People are all different too, so judging people by your own values and principles and holding them to account will mean you are often disappointed and your life may become a lonely place. It is perfectly reasonable to tell people what you need and expect from them, but if they are incapable of meeting your needs, you don’t have to cut them out. You can of course, but you don’t HAVE to. It is possible to remodel your

36 | SKBramhall & Woodford - November/December 2023

expectations of your loved ones to fit with reality and keep them in your life. It changes things of course, and you may find you are less willing to give as much of yourself to them too, but the moment you stop needing them or depending on them, your disappointment fades. Your mum might become more of a friend that you still love and care for but accept won’t ever be your spiritual guide or rock of support, and that might be okay. You will find that guidance and support from other sources if you need it. It’s probably healthier if we don’t expect a mum who would take a bullet for us whilst doing our laundry, housekeeping and being available for childcare 24/7, oh, and being rich and generous too... So, for homework, I suggest that with kindness and love, you re-evaluate your expectations of those around you, aligning them with factual information rather than hope and wishful thinking. Let go of any ideals about what these relationships “should be” and accept them for what they actually are. Then you decide what you expect from them and crucially, what you are willing to put into them. The irony of this is, often, these relationships improve after such an expectations adjustment. It’s not an exact science, but the combination of your reduced disappointment and them being unburdened by your expectations, seems to trigger them to make more effort and lean in to the relationship more. It may not happen, but either way, you’ll feel better by realistically aligning your expectations, so it’s a win win. So, whilst this isn’t intended to be a seasonal article, following the advice will certainly help keep Christmas (a time rife with fallouts) a little more merry on the whole. Ho Ho Ho

40 | SKBramhall & Woodford - November/December 2023

it takes me.
