Welcome to SK Bramhall & Woodford Welcome to the September / October issue of SK Bramhall & Woodford. Normally this issue would be my “Back to School” issue. Although things are slowly getting back to some sort of normal for most of us, I wasn’t too sure if it was safe to have it written all over the front cover! Hopefully I was being too cautious, and plans are well and truly in motion for the children’s safe return (and teachers!)

This month Food & Drink page 14

AKURI (SORT OF)

his is based on a brunch I had at Dishoom which was delicious. It is very simple and quick to make.

We’ve been going on a lot of morning walks – since it all happened – so I tend to chop all the veg/herbs up before we go and then it’s just a simple thing to shove together for a fabulous brunch when we get back.

Toast the sourdough. In a saucepan melt the butter over a medium heat then add the spring onions and chilli fry for a couple of minutes then add the coriander. Break the eggs into the pan and stir to scramble them. Add the curry powder and keep stirring until the eggs are cooked to your liking. I like mine quite firm. Split the eggs between the two slices of sourdough and top with the bacon. Garnish with some coriander leaves and serve up.

I’ve been asking some local businesses to let me know what they have been up to during the lockdown. This month rainbow88’s Linda Lam has sent in a letter (well email really) highlighting the great work undertaken by her team and the local businesses and people donating money, products and time. Linda has raised over £300,000 for local charities over the years; a truly unbelievable lady. The full story is on page 36. Also remember rainbow88 is back open for dining or takeaways with all track & trace rules being adhered too.

4 streaky bacon rashers (optional) Small knob of butter 3 spring onions sliced 1 small red (or green chilli) chopped

Try it it’s tasty!

Handful of coriander chopped Teaspoon of mild curry powder 4 eggs 2 slices of sourdough bread. If you are having the bacon fry it until it’s really crispy and then put them on kitchen paper to crisp up further.

MAKING ROOM FOR THE PERFECT HOME T he government have instructed us to work from home wherever possible resulting in approx. 60% of UK’s adult population currently managing this. Many have found themselves crammed in, school work, careers and dinner competing for space. Bedrooms morphing into the office and the laundry room and it’s driving some crazy. If you have the budget and energy to up sticks and move to a bigger or better laid out house, great. Alternatively there are clever ways to create what you need quite economically. Reclaim areas and spruce up your tired, overused space.I’m working on a project currently where the house felt full to bursting and dinner (tea? How Northern are we here?) was eaten in relay at a cafe style shelf in the kitchen or on your lap. The dining table was full of school work plus a laptop, another laptop for one adult with piles of papers, ironing piles, unloved shelves of ‘stuff’ and a corner that the dog enjoyed. The kitchen looked comparatively small next door and another adult was hiding behind a third laptop in the lounge. They were daunted at the thought of finding builders and tradesmen. Measuring up and a chat about what they needed created ideas to merge these two rooms. Just knocking down the wall wouldn’t fix everything. Look at the space, make a list of what is necessary, think about how you would use the kitchen diner, where the light comes in, where will the radiators go, will you need new flooring, lighting, a new kitchen? By using your budget wisely it can be done cost effectively. I’m bricking up a back door (less light but more useable), opening a wall (more light from a better direction), an extra wall in

12 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2020

the kitchen is available as the cafe style shelf table is redundant (more units and much needed worktop), only a few sq metres of wood flooring requires replacing, a new kitchen with a dishwasher (bonus) are costed but aren’t breaking the bank. By using few top cupboards with shelves for the rest breaks it up and helps keep it open whilst saving pounds. We can reuse many appliances, choose plainer more modern cabinets and get cool handles off the internet. Alcoves in the dining room will house cupboards to hide the day’s work, the ironing and it’s now an easy transition from the kitchen to set the table up for everyone to eat together. Even the dog got a hideaway with a simple built in cupboard above his majesty’s bed. We can often work with the footprint of what we have to create the perfect home to live in.

his is based on a brunch I had at Dishoom which was delicious. It is very simple and quick to make.

We’ve been going on a lot of morning walks – since it all happened – so I tend to chop all the veg/herbs up before we go and then it’s just a simple thing to shove together for a fabulous brunch when we get back. Serves 2 4 streaky bacon rashers (optional) Small knob of butter 3 spring onions sliced 1 small red (or green chilli) chopped Handful of coriander chopped Teaspoon of mild curry powder 4 eggs 2 slices of sourdough bread. If you are having the bacon fry it until it’s really crispy and then put them on kitchen paper to crisp up further.

14 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2020

Toast the sourdough. In a saucepan melt the butter over a medium heat then add the spring onions and chilli fry for a couple of minutes then add the coriander. Break the eggs into the pan and stir to scramble them. Add the curry powder and keep stirring until the eggs are cooked to your liking. I like mine quite firm. Split the eggs between the two slices of sourdough and top with the bacon. Garnish with some coriander leaves and serve up. Try it it’s tasty!

No One Is Overweight Or Obese Because They Can’t Count…

ockdown, amongst other things, has left many people sporting what is being lovingly referred to as a ‘Lockdown Bod’ (a few extra pounds about their person) and this has not gone unnoticed by the government, who have brought obesity right back into the spotlight. So far their actions have been somewhat toothless, and I can’t say I am surprised! But fear not, I am here to help. Firstly, I want to say to the people out there (mainly personal trainers) who strip all weight loss matters back to the simple ‘energy in / energy out equation’, and who consistently suggest that overweight people need simply to “count calories, eat less and move more”......... STOP IT!! Whilst no one is denying the simple maths here, underpinned by the first law of thermodynamics (of course, any increase in mass of the human body (fat or muscle) must come from a surplus of energy eaten and absorbed at one point in time), the advice itself is erroneous and unhelpful. If the advice worked, we wouldn’t have a situation whereby 70-75% of the developed world are overweight or obese. I can only think that such advice, often spoken as though it is some kind of great breakthrough in weight loss science, must be given on the assumption that people don’t already know it. But this quite simply is not the case. People are not overweight or obese because they can’t count, and people are certainly not overweight or obese because they are stupid. People are overweight or obese because of a host of complex emotional, psychological and physiological reasons, reasons which make it incredibly hard to “eat less and move more” no matter how much someone wants to. The correct approach to weight loss is not to get the calorie counter app out and condemn people to a miserable life of scanning barcodes, denying themselves the foods they want based on arbitrary estimates of the calories

16 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2020

their bodies will absorb from what they eat (calorie absorption is a whole new topic, for another day... ). It is to look at the individual circumstances of the person and to understand WHY they aren’t adhering to simple and basic acts of self care which are likely to include eating good, nutritious food in reasonable amounts, keeping active and sleeping well, among other things. The question asked should be; “what do you think is stopping you doing what you already know you need to do to get healthier?” Now, if people stay quiet and listen to what information is offered in response to a question like the above, it will become clear that it is not simple at all, and that not everyone can be tarred with the ‘lazy and greedy’ brush, pretty much no one at all in fact. Often weight gain, particularly extreme weight gain is linked to trauma, stress, anxiety, or other mental health issues. There can also be complex issues associated with parents or siblings and their attitudes to food, health and dieting, and sometimes all of the above. Over the years as a nutrition consultant and fitness trainer firstly and subsequently as a life coach and hypnotherapist, I have seen it all, and thankfully, have always been able to help. Never judge a book by its cover, it’s a fatal mistake, you just never know what is behind someone’s weight gain. A more enlightened approach to weight loss is needed right now, one that begins with seeing, hearing and understanding people more clearly and the results will take care of themselves.

BRAMHALL & WOODFORD ROTARY CLUB PIRATE WEEK 13TH - 19TH SEPTEMBER

Bramhall And Woodford Rotary Club will be launching a new event this September. We have missed organising our Duck Race and annual Scarecrow Festival for you this year. As a result our Treasure Chest is almost empty because, during the current crisis, we have helped provide PPE to Calcutta (Kolkata) and supported our sister club in Uganda which is not only battling Covid 19 but also severe flooding. More locally we have given funds to St Ann’s Hospice and to buy material to make emergency gowns and scrubs for our local hospitals. We have also been involved with the Helping Hands initiative local to Bramhall. Billy Bow, our Roving Rotary Scarecrow, is still self isolating but has introduced us to his cousins in the Pirate Community. The pirate ship, the Margaret Ann, will be out and about sailing the streets of Bramhall collecting booty to replenish our coffers to help local, national and international causes. We will set sail on Sunday 13th from about 4pm and culminate on

18 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2020

Saturday 19th in the Village centre when it is “Talk like a Pirate Day”. (Yes, really. Check it out on Google!) Look on our Facebook page (Bramhall and Woodford Rotary) for each day’s route. Can you lob a Doubloon into the Crow’s Nest? Will the villainous Captain CHill make someone Walk The Plank? Come and support us supporting the local communities in need. Please give any Pieces of Eight that you can spare. For initial contact and more information details can be found at www.bwrotary.org

POWERS OF ATTORNEY – WHAT CAN GO WRONG?

here are four million registered Lasting Powers of Attorney at the Office of the Public Guardian. Scare stories abound as to what can go wrong, but only 0.07% of Attorneys get investigated. For the majority of people, they provide an excellent tool in the management of finances and personal wellbeing in later life or through ill health. It is a misconception that executors under a Will carry out these functions. Your Will only comes into effect when you have passed away and your executors have no authority in your lifetime. Wills and Powers of Attorney are separate regimes. A Financial Power of Attorney enables Attorneys to help you manage your finances and pay your bills and this authority runs concurrent with your own authority, which is not reduced by the signing of such a power. Attorneys must involve you in all their actions and only undertake transactions that are for your benefit. Health and Welfare Powers of Attorney, which cater for your wellbeing, medical treatments and choice of accommodation, can only be operated when you no longer have the understanding to make these decisions. Your Attorneys are answerable to you, to each other, to the beneficiaries under your Will, to the local authority and to the Court of Protection. They do not have permission just to do as they please. So who makes the complaint to the Court in these 0.07% of cases? It might be your doctor, your bank, the local authority, your relatives, other Attorneys or solicitors. Once the Court

24 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2020

has been notified of possible impropriety it will investigate. It has strong powers and can order Attorneys to refund monies, write them out of Wills or even bankrupt them, where it is satisfied that the Attorney is behaving badly or proposes to behave in a way that contravenes his or her authority or fails to act in your best interests. Arguments by children such as “ it doesn’t really matter as the money will soon be mine”, “I deserve the money for the sacrifice I have made” or “ if they had had capacity they would have wanted me to have it” do not work. Attorneys can apply to the Court for permission to be paid for services, may be because they have given up work completely, or on a second marriage, where hostile stepchildren are watching their inheritance being dissipated, for authority to rely on a pension for financial support. You should not be fearful that Powers of Attorney are a licence for your Attorneys to do as they please. There are restrictions available to curtail their activities and the vast majority operate successfully.

Summer

s summer turns into autumn, colour from flowers can continue well into September. Shrubs in flower include Fuschias, that are such good value with a long flowering period. Fuschia magellanica is one of the hardiest types with pink or white flowers. They will grow in sun or slight shade and provide an arching shrub about 1m in diameter. Abelia Grandiflora is an underrated shrub with lots of small white flowers with a lovely scent. It will grow on any soils except light sandy soils. Trim in early spring. More scent is provided by Clerodendrum bungei a tall suckering shrub with large head of highly scented pink flowers. Pop it in at the back of a border and watch it come up around other shrubs. Hibiscus syriacus is a late flowering shrub, also known as the Tree Hollyhock. They will grow to up to 2.5m and have large pink, white or rich blue flowers in early autumn. They take time to settle in and grow but are spectacular in September, covered in large flowers.

There are many perennials that provide lots of autumn colour. The colours tend to be shades of rich pink and lilac. Asters are good partners for Sedums and bees love them both. Asters can be small such as Aster Jenny. This lovely little perennial grows to about 30cm tall and flowers for a long period. Then you can have taller

26 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2020

Aster x frikartii which will grow to about 60cm. Pair them with Sedum spectabile Brilliant or September Glow which grow to 50cm and form large plants. Very easy to split in spring. Another good autumn flowering plant for late summer are the Penstemons. The easiest and hardiest Penstemon is Garnet with 3cm rich deep pink trumpet flowers. However larger flowered varieties are available in white, red, mauve and rich plum. Start planting Daffodils, Crocuses and other early spring flowering bulbs in September. Tulips need to wait until October or November. Start dividing perennials in autumn. Keep on picking runner beans and wait patiently for tomatoes to ripen. I have had courgette plants continuing to fruit well into October although the courgettes do get smaller and smaller!

Time to sell that vintage watch? Demand for classic timepieces stuns at auction.

I

f time in lockdown has uncovered a vintage watch gathering dust you could have reason to smile - it just might earn you hundreds or even thousands of pounds. Watches have been big news in the auction world in recent years but their allure never diminishes. In fact, it grows ever stronger with the passage of time. We were reminded of that with a bang worthy of Big Ben when our online-only Silver, Jewellery and Watches Auction raced to success. Despite lockdown, despite worldwide recession fears, bidders were out in force. And the glittering stars of the show were vintage watches from the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and even 2005. They dominated our best sellers’ list on the day, occupying five places in the auction Top 10 prices achieved, including the number one and two spots.

Lot 175 sold for £12,500

At number one was lot 175, a rare, circa 2005, gents self-winding 18ct gold Omega Speedmaster Broad Arrow watch which reached £12,500. Its guide price was £5,000-£8,000. In the number two spot was lot 178, a circa 1992 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date GMT - Master II stainless steel and yellow metal man’s bracelet watch which made £5,600 from a guide price of £4,000. Then there was lot 189, a ladies’ 18ct gold Rolex Oyster-Perpetual Superlative Chronometer watch which sailed to £3,000 and was snapped up an international buyer. Its estimate was £1,500-£2,000.

Lot 178 sold for £5,600

Lot 189 sold for £3000

28 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2020

Another hit was lot 184, a gentleman’s bi-metal Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust wristwatch which made £2,800, comfortably above its £1,500-£2,000 estimate. And never imagine a family heirloom Lot 184 sold from decades ago is worthless. for £2,800 Lot 164, a 1960s gentleman’s International Watch Company Schaffhausen Ingenieur automatic watch, with leather strap and some inevitable wear and tear, sold for £2,600. As well as being sought-after collectors’ items, when the pound Lot 164 sold for £2,600 plunged against the dollar and Euro after the Brexit vote, UK auctions became attractive hunting grounds for international buyers thanks to favourable exchange rates. Some international buyers were immediately paying around 20% less when buying from the UK and little has changed since. But there are other factors, too. The fast-growing pre-owned luxury watch market is enjoying a global surge in popularity. This increase has been spurred by younger, ecologically conscious buyers who prefer pre-loved, sustainable items rather than buying new. Plus, interest in luxury goods is as strong as ever and the aspirational goal to own a timepiece such as a Rolex is made possible by sourcing them at auction. It provides an affordable way to start a collection at entry-level prices.

Hansons can offer free virtual valuations, free home visits to assess large collections and free quotes for downsizing/house clearance. To find out more, please email: charleshanson@hansonsauctioneers.co.uk.

COVID-19 –

CLEAR ADVICE FOR OLDER PEOPLE

W

e have all come to realise that we will be living alongside the COVID-19 virus for some-time. We have also come to realise that living safely alongside COVID-19 means quickly adapting to the changes from government, scientific and medical advisors; as they respond to data and evidence. We now find ourselves regularly being given new rules and guidelines and are often asked to adopt them very quickly. This can lead to confusion and uncertainty, especially for older people in our society, who are considered high risk. It is very important that the messages are clear and concise, can be easily understood and cut through ‘the jargon’. Whilst the Government and NHS websites have general information, I always find that Age UK is a good source of reference specifically designed with older people in mind. They explain the terminology that’s being used, clearly and what it means in reality to our day to day lives. For example; ‘Social Distancing’ - limiting our contact with people outside of our household and taking precautions to stay safe when going out and adhering to the 2m and 1m distance rules. Everyone should be following these guidelines. However, if you are over 70 or have existing health conditions you may want to take extra precautions, such as only meeting up with people in outside spaces or visiting places at times where they are likely to be less busy. ‘Shielding’ - from the 1st August 2020 shielding ended. However, for those considered clinically

30 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2020

extremely vulnerable and previously advised to shield the message is to follow strict social distancing guidelines. This also applies if you are over 70 or living with a long-term health condition as you are at increased risk from coronavirus. It is accepted that going outside more often will bring with it some risk but for many people the benefits to their mental and physical well-being will outweigh this. Deciding what you are comfortable with is a personal choice and you shouldn’t feel pressured into doing anything more than you want to. If you do want to take extra precautions, there are some things you can do, these include; Meet up with people outdoors, as the risk of transmission is lower outside than inside. If you do meet up with people outside of your household in an indoor space, it is best to do so in larger, well-ventilated places. If you go to other people’s houses or have people to yours, open windows to let air in. Another useful section on the site is ‘Assessing Your Risk of Coronavirus’, for more information on all these topics visit www.ageuk.org.uk

Passion for fashion

hristmas will be upon us very soon and you’re probably thinking about buy a sewing machine. The lockdown has given people an opportunity to reignite their passion for fashion and sewing is back, and cool again. Sewing machines are available and all the manufacturers are bringing out their brightest and their best, but what do you need to look for when you go shopping for your new machine? Here are my tips on what to look for and my top 6 sewing machines 1 - Think about what you want to sew and how often you might sew. Are you planning to make curtains, or baby clothes? I am a dressmaker, but I also like to fill my house with homemades, curtains, cushions and do the odd repairs.

I need to be sure the machine I have can handle both heavy weight sewing all the way down to fine chiffon and silks, but making stretch t shirts for my boys means the machine needs to offer a stretch option too. Take a selection of fabrics to the sewing machine shop and ask them to allow you to sew these fabrics. They should and quite often they will. 2 -Now I know what I want, I know how much to budget. Do I wait and save up for the one I really want to meet my needs, or do I go ahead and purchase one that will do the job? The problem with that is, you grow out of your sewing machine very quickly. I have a lot of sewers who have wished they were recommended the next size up. This isn’t giving you permission to go crazy, you don’t want to be that person with all the gear but no idea.

32 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2020

3 - Do you need to move your machine around? If you have a dedicated workspace that’s great, but if your machine needs to be taken off the dining table nightly (although tea in front of the telly could be a fun treat!), then you need to consider the weight. Will you take yours to sewing classes? 4- After sales support - warranty and reputation. I will recommend one over another only because I need to know the manufacturer will help me if I ask. I have had bad experiences with some and others can’t seem to do enough. Do your research and ask around. My favourite £100 mark machines, are Brother LS14/17, Singer Serenade (Lidl) and the Necchi NM200 (Aldi). These machine have proven to be a great budget machine that handles fabric extremely well, give you a good range of stitches and accessories. I have unboxed and demonstrated these machines in the latest you tube videos. For, consider Brother F420, Necchi K102AD and Juki HZL H80 , these have a similar number of stitches and speed control, each coping well with fabric and a good overall result. You can watch the unboxing of these and other machines at Abi’s Den https://www.youtube.com/c/AbisDen Abi x https://www.facebook.com/AbisSewingDen/ @Abis.Den Machine Services www.Abisden.Com YouTube  https://www.youtube.com/c/AbisDen http://abisden.blogspot.co.uk

Health & Beauty

Let’s talk about the pelvic floor muscles. We all have them, yes, men too! They are an amazing team and often taken for granted – until something goes wrong. Where are they? This group of muscles attach to the pubic bone at the front and sling under to the tailbone at the back. There are 2 layers, superficial and deep. They form a hammock like structure and are the ‘floor’ of our trunk. What do they do? They are responsible for supporting the contents of our pelvis, including the bladder, lower bowel and, in women, the vagina. They keep us continent and can relax to allow us to open our bowels or pass urine at the appropriate time. They help to turn the baby’s head during childbirth. They also have a role in sexual function. What can go wrong? Pregnancy and childbirth, years of straining on the toilet, years of heavy lifting, surgery e.g. hysterectomy, prolapse repair and prostatectomy. Without the correct rehabilitation, the pelvic floor muscles can become weak and dysfunctional. In some cases, the muscles may not be efficient because they are too tense; this can also lead to bladder and bowel problems but more commonly, to pain. Pain during or after sex should not be ignored as there are many causes. So do seek medical help. Pregnancy and childbirth put the pelvic floor muscles through their paces. Doing pelvic floor exercises during pregnancy is like training for a marathon! And the rehab after delivery is essential to avoid future leaking. TV adverts for ‘pretty’ continence wear almost normalise this condition, but whilst leaking is common, it is not normal. Women approaching their menopause (average age 45-55), will notice loss of muscle bulk, especially noticeable in their legs. Though less

34 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2020

visible, the pelvic floor group are also affected by this change. Doing appropriate exercise such as Yoga or Pilates to encourage bone strength, flexibility and balance, will complement pelvic floor specific exercises too. Men suffering with prostate cancer may undergo surgery to remove the prostate gland. This is positioned at the base of the bladder (in men only) and whilst the surgery is essential, one after effect can be urinary incontinence. Most men recover within 3 months but evidence shows that exercising the pelvic floor muscles will speed up or even prevent leakage issues. Pelvic floor exercises can also aid erectile dysfunction and improve sensation during intimacy for both men and women. Pelvic health physiotherapists can treat all of these issues and more. They have undergone extra training to enable them to offer internal examinations of the pelvic floor muscles. They always take an holistic approach, and goal plan with their client. They spend time explaining and reassuring as well as guiding, advising and prescribing the correct pelvic floor exercise for the individual. In that confidential setting, clients find that they can discuss problems without shame and often say things they have been too embarrassed about to say to anyone before. Pelvic Health physiotherapy is available via the NHS as well as in private practices. Dee Woodcock MCSP, MPOGP, HCPC registered. Specialist Pelvic Health Physiotherapist

Community News

RAINBOW88 A letter from Linda, On the last Friday of March rainbow88 I had to close our restaurant due to the safety of our team and as not to pass on anything, we also decided to close for takeaways too even knowing we would have made good business. I was rather down as we had to cancel 6 charity events and the first thing that came to my mind was how am I going to help the community with my doors closed? Anyway, I slept on it and decided that rainbow88’s kitchen is closed but my small kitchen at home in Bramhall isn’t so decided to cook for the vulnerable, selfisolating, NHS staff and Key Workers, those suffering from mental illness or lost loved ones and literally anyone who has gone that extra mile for others! I approached Lou Murphy from Helping Hands Bramhall and we got local businesses and residents involved to donate ingredients, bakers on board to bake treats to go out together with my meals and voluntary drivers to deliver! Beards Butchers, CO OP Bramhall, Go Local Hursthead, Go Local Orrishmere, Waterhouses, Hollingworth Design Ltd were some of the extremely kind and generous donators!  Facebook sites also played a big part in getting the donations in, thank you! Members of the public were asked to nominate anyone they knew by private messaging me names, addresses and why and we made sure they received a treat! There have been tears, emotions and smiles from many who received our treats!  I did all preparation, cooking, cleaning on my own for 1800 meals until my daughter came

36 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2020

home after 8 weeks and she helped! We then re-opened for takeaways we still continued to treat the vulnerable till this day! I am in touch with most local churches! There were many who had heard about my rice and wanted to buy so I dedicated Weds to cook Fancy Fried Rice and Salt n Pepper Chicken Balls for £5pp with treats from the bakers and all the money to St Ann’s Hospice and Chelwood Foodbank. To date I’ve treated 2616 deserving people to Fancy Fried Rice (Spicy Chicken, Onion and Egg Fried Rice) and treats from our bakers including over 250 for the charities! I am also on the board of the steering group for the new Christie Hospital in Macclesfield where I myself had chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer and have recently raised up to £3000 for them over my June birthday and will be asking for donations for rainbow88’s 21st anniversary in October! But if you would like to donate now please check out my Facebook (rainbow88) or Just Giving page (Linda Lam) This pandemic has brought out the best in people and I have been absolutely overwhelmed by how the community came together as one! We were delighted to receive an award from the High Sheriff of Manchester, Bramhall and Woodford Rotary Club, Devonshire Unit, Stepping Hill NHS and Cheadle Hulme and Bramhall Flower Group. Well done Stockport and stay safe Linda, Steve and team rainbow

Stay fit with Pilates anytime, anywhere! Exercise is more than ever an important lifestyle factor to consider for supporting immune function and our emotional and mental health. Currently Pilates teachers in the UK are still facing lockdown restrictions for teaching group classes indoors due to social distancing measures. So rather than miss out why not join an online Pilates class? How do I Participate in an Online Pilates Classes? Taking part couldn’t be easier all you need is a laptop, tablet or Smartphone (or a plug-in webcam). The sessions are taught primarily verbally, but the teacher will be closely watching you whilst you exercise. What Pilates classes are there? Pilates Matwork Classes The most popular form of Pilates is matwork. Matwork is a more traditional form of Pilates, which as it has been developed has incorporated the use of small equipment such as balls, stretch bands, foam rollers or magic circles. High Intensity Power Pilates HIP Pilates is a more dynamic form of Pilates that combines the precision and focus of a traditional Pilates session with the dynamic energy of a high intensity workout. Combining core strength, balance and coordination with an energetic cardiovascular element HIP Pilates is the answer to many people’s search for a functional ‘feel good’ workout. Anyone with knee or hip problems would benefit hugely from the precise nature of the

40 | SKBramhall & Woodford - September/October 2020

weight-bearing lunges and squats. Emphasis is on tracking the knees over toes at all times, therefore strengthening the quads.  The class is fast paced, but importantly LOW impact. Therefore you will increase your heart rate safely whilst burning fat, strengthening your lungs and building lean muscle mass. The class also uses light hand weights, which improve bone health. Attending regular online Pilates classes will give a structure to your day and something to look forward to. Ideally I would prefer to be teaching my clients face to face again but I’m enjoying teaching online and through Zoom and I’ve been able to interact with clients surprisingly well. I also still get to socialise with people I’ve taught for months and even years. And, it’s lovely to see that clients can catch up with class-friends too. Since March I’ve personally joined online Pilates Classes and workshops live from Dubai, New York, Arizona, London and Scotland; distance and travel time isn’t an issue with an online class!
