Welcome to SK Bramhall & Woodford

Welcome to the September/October issue of SKBramhall & Woodford.

Earlier this month Mike Hickman organised a charity golf day in memory of his late father Rick. Rick was a dear friend to Simon, owner of SK and he was only too pleased to support Mike and his family. Read more on page 18.

The centre pages feature Boots Opticians who recently underwent a revamp. It is a wonderful story of a local girl coming back to the village she was brought up in and buying the business. Read more on pages 26 & 27.

With so much news to report this month, we have a new column Village Talk on page 38.

If you receive the magazines in time, remember it is the Woodford Cricket Club Beer Festival on Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th August, we have details on page 12.

Whilst we do our best to print all the local events, we sometimes receive them too late to print. So why not follow us on Instagram @skmagazines and keep up to date after the magazines are out.

If you are planning an event and would like us to spread the word, please do not hesitate to drop me an e-mail with the details. I have now got a handy form you can complete.

See you next time.

Ancient treasure on your Cheshire sideboard?

Sideboards and glass cabinets are often home to antique treasures but their owners are often blissfully unaware of a potential auction windfall.

I will give you a perfect example to inspire you ahead of my trip to Cheshire’s Ness Botanic Gardens in October to offer antique valuations. I was on a home visit assessing jewellery when I spied, on a sideboard, a shimmering bowl with a floral design.

That thrill-of-the-find excitement gripped me. I knew it was potentially ancient treasure. It was identified as a late 16th or early 17th century motherof-pearl IndoPortuguese dish of cultural significance.

Late 16th or early 17th century mother-of-pearl, Indo-Portuguese dish, est 10-15K

Somehow, it had made its way across the world and ended up at London’s Portobello market in the 1970s. The seller’s late husband purchased it there and the precious rarity spent decades on their sideboard.

Believed to have been crafted in Gujarat on the western coast of India, the dish is thought to be a rare survivor of wares popular with the wealthy elite and royalty during the days of the Portuguese Empire. It’s likely it was brought to the UK by a British merchant for a royal or noble household around 400 years ago. IndoPortuguese mother-of-pearl objects were brought to Europe by merchants from around 1525. Henry VIII was among royals who liked ornate wares ‘from the Indies’ and similar mother-of-pearl overlayed items can be seen at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

Items like this were luxury objects then and now. They were deemed so exotic they were

gifted to royalty. And we have the Portuguese to thank because when their country’s empire was at its height, its people commissioned mother-of-pearl wares.

In 1498 Portuguese explorer

Vasco da Gama became the first European to reach India by sea and in 1505 Portuguese India was founded. Gujarat is first mentioned as the centre of mother-of-pearl work in 1502 when the King of Melinde, on the East Coast of Africa, presented da Gama with a gold and mother-of-pearl bedstead.

Such is the desirability of Indian and Asian artefacts, the 26cm diameter dish could make £10,000-£15,000 in Hansons’ September 26-27 Fine Art Auction. Further entries invited.

Charles Hanson will offer free valuations at Ness Botanic Gardens, Cheshire, CH64 4AY, on October 22, 11am-1pm. Free valuations of jewellery and watches will be available at Lost and Found Knutsford, Old Town Hall, Princess Street, Knutsford, WA16 6BY, on November 1, 10amnoon. Inquiries, service@hansonsauctioneers. co.uk or 01283 733988.

HOW TO SET UP YOUR OWN SELF-EMPLOYED BUSINESS

If you have ever dreamed of setting up your own business and making a go of it on your own, then becoming self-employed is a relatively straightforward option that might suit you. The process of getting started is a lot simpler than setting up a company and you can be up and running almost straight away.

You will need to register as self-employed with HMRC which is quite easy to do and involves filling in an online form with your personal details and the details of your business; the name of your business; a description of what you do and when your business started. HMRC will then allocate you with a taxpayer reference number that you need to keep safe.

bookkeeping software packages available to help record all your income and outgoings, but it is not a requirement that you use these. The main expenses that can be claimed against your income to reduce your profits and tax liability are the cost of the goods that your business sells; advertising, insurance, travel costs, rent for any business premises you use and accountancy fees. Any equipment you purchase such as computers or phones can also reduce the tax due.

Someone who is in employment has their tax deducted automatically from their gross pay through the PAYE system. But the self-employed need to complete an annual personal tax return, submit it to HMRC and then arrange to pay the tax due directly to HMRC (usually by the end of January and by the end of July each year). As the tax for the first year of self-employment is paid in arrears, and HMRC require you to make an advance payment towards the second year, the amount due when you complete your first tax return can be higher than you might have expected. This can cause a nasty surprise, so it is advisable to prepare your self-assessment tax return as soon as possible after the 5 April each year since it does not have to be submitted to HMRC until the following 31 January.

To complete your annual personal tax return, income and expenditure will need to be recorded and this can be as simple as putting all your receipts in a folder. There are also various

While not strictly necessary, it is advisable to have a separate bank account for your business to keep personal and business finances separate. This helps with your record keeping, making it easier to prepare your annual personal tax return. When choosing a bank look for those that may offer a period of free banking as well as an overdraft facility to help you manage cash flow at the outset.

Trading as self-employed is the best environment while your profits are modest but stay in touch with your accountant because at some point it may be beneficial to incorporate your self-employed business by transferring it into a limited company. Also, if your revenue is growing, you must also be very mindful of the compulsory VAT registration threshold which is now £90,000 of annual taxable turnover and can catch people out!

Charity News CHARITY GOLF DAY RAISES OVER £7,700 IN MEMORY OF LOCAL HERO

A charity golf day organized by Mike Hickman in memory of his late father Rick, has successfully raised over £7,700 for The Christie Hospital, marking a heartfelt tribute and a meaningful contribution to the fight against cancer. Mike, from Cheadle Hulme, arranged the event in honour of his father Rick, who tragically passed away suddenly in November last year after a brain aneurysm at the age of 58. The charity golf day, held at Bramhall Golf Club on Friday 9th August, drew participants from across the community, including family, friends, club members and supporters, all coming together to celebrate the life of Mike’s father and raise funds for a cause that is close to their hearts.

The event featured a full day of golf, a raffle and auction, with prizes generously donated by friends & local businesses. Participants enjoyed perfect weather and the beautiful course, but the real highlight of the day was the overwhelming support and unity displayed by everyone there. In a statement, Mike expressed his gratitude: “This day was about more than just golf. It was a way to honour my dad’s memory and give back to a hospital that does incredible work every day. I’m overwhelmed by the support we’ve received, and I know my dad would be proud.”

Mike chose Bramhall Golf Club as the venue for the charity event because his father had been a dedicated member there for 38 years.  His grandfather Tony was a Past Captain in 1988, making it a place filled with cherished memories, so it seemed like the perfect location to celebrate Rick’s life and legacy, surrounded by the community that had become like a second family.

The funds raised will be donated to The Christie Hospital, who are dedicated to cancer treatment and research. The hospital has been at the forefront of providing exceptional care and support to patients and their families, making the donation a significant contribution to its ongoing efforts.

Mike plans to make the ‘Rick Hickman Charity Golf Day’ an annual event, continuing to raise awareness and funds in memory of his father. A date for 2025 will be released shortly.

Garden Talk

SUMMER HAS ARRIVED!

When the sun comes out we start thinking about our gardens and my garden advice consultancy gets busier with people looking for help with everything from pruning to design advice. As garden designers we have a few reliable plants that are useful in almost every design – and almost any garden would benefit from at least one of these suggestions. We all have our favourites of course, but I thought I’d share a few of mine this month.

ground cover plants don’t know when to stop growing and eventually become invasive weeds, but not Jack Frost. Low silver and green veined leaves creep over the soil and in summer display nectar rich blue frothy flowers - absolutely beautiful! They will grow under trees and shrubs in shade because they are naturally a woodland plant. They don’t like getting too dry but as they become more established, they will run up tree stems and under shrubs cutting down on the summer weeding.

Peony or Paeony is an easy perennial flowering from April to June. The main thing with the Peony is the time the plant takes to establish a reasonable size clump. If you think our Grandparents grew such wonderful large clumps of Peonies, it’s because they have been there in the garden for such a long time. Peonies are available in every shade of colour, doubles, semi-double and single flowers. I actually find the pure white P. Shirley Temple a must for every garden design. But if you have plenty of space to fill, take a look at the tree paeony. Don’t worry, it is not actually a tree, they just have a woody stem to 2m tall. But they have impressive football size flowers 30-40cm across. P. rockii is my favourite to use. Peonies love a well-drained rich soil so don’t forget to feed them in the summer and apply a compost mulch in autumn.

Finally, I must squeeze in my number one plant for any garden design and that’s the shuttlecock fern. Again, this is not the invasive wild seedy fern that we see in everyone’s garden. Matteuccia struthiopteris, to give it its Latin name is a uniform, delicate, pale lime green fern with architecturally triangular growth that will grow in any soil. None invasive but gently spreading through the garden design. I love how it compliments plants and colours and at only 40cm high doesn’t overpower surrounding plants.

Next month in SK Magazine I’ll list a few more great and reliable plants for garden design because there are so many wonderful plants out there that need writing about.

BRAMHALL GOLF CLUB CAPTAINS WEEK

June saw the Captain’s events here at Bramhall Golf Club with the Lady Captain, Jo Lingwoods, Day taking place on Thursday 13th June and the Men’s Captain Mr Jon Pacey showcasing a 36-hole two day event taking place over Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June. The Course has been in exceptional condition for the events this year with the newly appointed Course Manager Ian Kirwan showing off his skills for presentation. More to follow about Ian in the coming weeks and months.

Lady Captain said that she had a fantastic day with the event running superbly. Following the golf the Ladies, who know how to party had a fantastic evening of food and dancing. With Lady Captain treating the ladies to a magical evening with a show from table magician Jack Mabon. The overall winner was Mrs Sarah Jane Moore with a brilliant level par net score of 73 just edging out Kath Kirwan, Vicky Clewley, Joanne Kinney and Leanne Rudd who all finished with a 75.

The inaugural chipping competition took place on Friday evening before Mr Captains weekend to raise money for Mr Captains nominated charity the MS Society. Mr Captain kindly laid on some nibbles for those who attended.

Saturdays competitors were treated to some fabulous weather and some tasty pin positions on day 1.

The lead after day 1 was held by the clubs Finance Chairman Blair Marriott who carded a fantastic opening round net 64, 2 shots ahead of Martin Hodgkinson and Colin Carter on 66. As day two ebbed and flowed the lead was commanded by David Crawford who was building on a 68 first round score and carded a very impressive 2 over par for the front nine of day 2 (net 6 under). Heading into the back 9 it was Davids’s competition to lose. Despite a very nervous 7 at the last par 4 which included a visit to the out of bounds and the creak at the

back of the green, David managed a miraculous up and down to get over the line and win the Weekend with a very impressive net 6 under par for the 2 rounds, just ahead of our first round leader Blair Marriott and Steve Rosier who both finished on 3 under.

The balcony was packed for the Presentation with the speech and the prize giving taking place in the setting sun on the first tee.

Mr Captain quoted that the weekend was the best fun he had had at the golf club, and he hadn’t even hit a ball. What a host he was.

The following week Mr Captains evening event was held where the attendees were treated to some great food and a performance from the New West End Jersey Boys. A great evening was had by all.

July saw the turn of our President Mr Mike Jones. With the Presidents weekend held on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th.

Mr Presidents event which is by tradition a Stableford event was fortunate again to be played in some great weather. Once again, a chipping competition was held for the Captains Charity with Mr President laying on some nibbles for the attendees.

The event was hotly contested on day one with 1 point separating the leader Max Murphy on 41 points from 6 other competitors on 40 points.

The overall winner was Paul Rigby who carded 39 points the first day and 38 points on day 2 for a total of 77 points. A fantastic weekend well done Paul, just edging out Andy Southern and David Nortier on 75 points.

Mr President and his guests enjoyed an evening of Food and Dancing on the Saturday evening so undoubtedly there were some tender golfers for the Sunday.

A fantastic year of events laid on by our club dignitaries. Thank you, Mr President, Mr Captain and Mrs Lady Captain, for all your hospitality throughout.

A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE!

Earlier this summer SK Magazines popped down to the launch of the new look Boots Opticians in the heart of the village. Although new owners Sally & Paul Amadi acquired the practice in 2023 it’s been 18 months in the planning to bring the state of art practice to Bramhall.

We caught up with the guys to find out more. First with Sally who had both personal and professional reasons for the purchase.

“It has been great coming back to Bramhall, the local village where I grew up and went to school, my family have been local to Stockport for decades.

My sister and I went to Boots Opticians (previously Dolland & Aitchison)as children and so coming back to the branch to carry on providing excellent eyecare has been really exciting! It has been great for Paul and I to be able put something back into the community which helped me grow into the person I am. I have already seen so many familiar faces from

old school mates to old teachers and family friends. I hope that we will see many more!

Paul, born and bred in Manchester, met Sally in 2003 at their first post-qualification optometrist post in Manchester City centre. Paul holds a postgraduate diploma as an Independent Prescriber which allows him to prescribe for certain ocular conditions, so let here about this new

magic equipment.

“We’ve invested in an Optical Coherence Tomographer which allows us to more effectively screen for certain ocular conditions including Dry and Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Glaucoma and Diabetic Eye disease. The instrument allows to see below the surface of the retina to detect conditions that are otherwise invisible with conventional examination techniques. We also have invested in state of the art refraction equipment that allows for a more comfortable (and in many cases, more accurate) eye test.”

Julia Danielska, Practice Manager has been heavily involved with the refit and was very hands on organising the launch Grand Reopening. Here is Julia’s take o n the day.

“Blessed with the sunshine, the Bramhall community was keen to stop by and enjoy the

delicious cakes and a glass of bubbly. The face painter was sure kept busy for the enjoyment of little ones as well as the team, who were eager to join in the festivities. It’s hard to tell who turned out to be a bigger hit, the mayor, or our beautiful stilt walker” … I think the pictures show everyone had a great time.

So if its general eye tests, contact lenses consultations or emergency appointments (Saturday appointments available) why not call into your family friendly opticians and see what they can do for you.

September 2024 recipe

Chicken thighs with a corn crust.

This is a lovely dish from an Ottolenghi book I have – very casual and easy to make. I may seem like a lot of ingredients but it is really just about bunging it all together. I is quite spicy which makes it ideal for an Autumn evening in my view.

Serves six

3tbsp olive oil

3 red onions (thinly sliced)

2 garlic cloves (crushed)

4 tbsp rose harissa

Add the peppers and chocolate and simmer again for 30 minutes uncovered and stirring frequently until the sauce is nice and thick. Add the coriander and spoon into a baking dish with high sides. Pre- heat the oven to 180c

Sweetcorn Batter

70g unsalted butter (melted)

500g corn kernels (I just use frozen defrosted)

3 tbsp whole milk

3 eggs (whites and yolks separated)

2tsp sweet smoked paprika

850g skinless and boneless chicken thighs

200ml passata

5 large tomatoes (quartered)

200g jarred roasted red peppers (drained and sliced)

15g dark chocolate

20g coriander (chopped)

Salt and pepper to taste.

In a large lidded saute pan fry the onions in the oil at high for about 10 mins until nicely soft and brown. Reduce the heat and add the garlic, harissa, paprika and chicken. Add one teaspoon of salt and a good grind of pepper. Cook for 5 minutes stirring and then add the passata and tomatoes. Pour over 350ml of water, cover then simmer for 30 minutes stirring every now and then.

Put the butter, corn, milk, egg yolks and a bit of salt into a blender and blitz for a few seconds to form a rough batter then spoon into a large bowl. In another bowl whisk the egg whites until they are stiff and then gently fold them into the corn mixture retaining as much air as you can. Pour over the chicken evenly and then bake for 35 minutes until the top is golden. Keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t over brown. If it looks like it is put some foil over it for the last 10 minutes or so. Leave is to stand for 10 minutes before serving.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BOUNCE BACK LOANS

Bounce Back Loans and their bigger brother CBILs loans were very popular a few years ago. They gave businesses much needed liquidity when their trade was knocked by the lock downs. Bounce back loans came with a 12 month repayment and interest holiday followed by 5 years of monthly repayments with a low interest rate. We are now in the middle of the boring bit – the repayments.

When the loans were taken out there were precise conditions about the amount to be borrowed and what the money could be used for. The speed the loans were given out meant that the banks were often unable to carry out thorough checks before the money was lent.

In other words the conditions were self certified i.e. the borrower confirmed they had met the criteria.

If you continue to pay off your loan month by month is gets smaller and all is right with the world.

What happens if you can’t pay? In that case the bank will first try to enforce the loan from the company. If there is nothing left in the company then the bank will ask the government for the

outstanding balance. These loans had no director personal guarantees they were government guaranteed.

Within this process the powers that be will look very carefully at whether the loan was correctly take out in the first place. There were a number of conditions for the loans but perhaps the most common violations are:

n Loans were taken out that were larger than allowed by the rules.

n Loans were used to support the directors’ life styles not to support the business bouncing back.

What to do? If you got carried away and have taken out a loan incorrectly you need to seek advice about what to do. If you cannot pay back a loan you need specific insolvency advice.

If you need to talk to someone about tax, accounting and finance more generally then please give us a call. We offer a free initial meeting and that may well be all you need. If you want continuing advice we offer agreed in advance fees so you know where you stand. I look forward to hearing from you.

BEDROOM DESIGNING TIPS

Designing a room can be daunting, but following a few careful steps can help break it down and help the final look be more cohesive. Try not to think of what you already have, unless you are happy to bring a room together around items that are similar in design.

Here I’m showcasing images from one of my suppliers that specialise in a whimsical, relaxed look reminiscent of visits to, perhaps, a French village, or it can be adapted to a simple Scandi vibe.

The feel here is one of relaxation, perfect for a bedroom.

Materials are natural with lots of wood, touches of iron and plenty of layered fabrics in neutral tones. This scheme would suit natural timbers, wicker, raffia, cotton and linen. Layer up your bedding with tones of the earth.

Walls can be painted in dark or light earthy tones, from terracottas to whites. The darker the walls, the warmer and more cosy it will feel. Always ensure there’s a balance of colours, if using dark accents, to showcase them against a lighter background, be it the floor, furniture or walls.

Soft lighting and mirrors can be used to great effect in bedrooms. The ‘big light’ for tasks

(we all need to vacuum sometimes), then side lights on a dimmer for a lovely soft glow before lights out, or brighter for reading. Mirrors can be used as another source of light if positioned to reflect your light source.

Finally, accessories are super important to get right. Keep in mind the look you want to achieve to keep on track. Say you have some lovely candlesticks, you can probably reuse these from another room, they may need to be whitewashed or sanded back to a lighter finish, but adding the same earthy toned candles

will finish the look off. Add in some faux foliage and gather in groups and varying heights.

DONKEY AND THE ELKS

There is a wonderful film circulating on social media and has featured on the news. If you haven’t already seen the video, then I would strongly urge you to search ‘donkey and the elks’ and take a look. It is a heart-warming story, I would liken it to a fable as it has a moral lesson, one of acceptance.

The story begins 5 years ago in California when a couple, Terrie and Dave Drewry lost their donkey, named Diesel, during a hike after he was frightened by a mountain lion. The couple searched in vain for Diesel and enlisted volunteers to help find him. The last footage of Diesel was a few months later when he was spotted on a trail camera, after that there were no other sightings. “We finally kind of gave up,” Mrs Drewry told BBC’s news partner, CBS. “Just no signs of him.” They were resigned to never knowing what happened, that is until a hiker, Max Fennell, made an interesting discovery 5 years after Deisel went missing.

These two different animals have learned to get along and live happily together. There are obvious differences but what they have in common is that they are herd animals meaning they need companions. The elks have completely accepted Diesel the donkey and welcomed him into their family. The acceptance of someone into a group means beginning to think of them as part of the group and to act in a friendly way towards them. It is unconditionally and wholeheartedly letting someone be exactly who they are, just like Diesel he’s still a donkey living amongst the elks but has been accepted and fits right in.

The importance of feeling accepted cannot be overstated. When we feel accepted, we are more likely to have positive self-esteem and selfworth. It often leads to a sense of confidence and security in ourselves, and we are less likely to seek validation from external sources.

Max was out on a hike, only a few miles from where Diesel went missing when he spotted a herd of Elks, what was unusual that there was a donkey running with the elks as part of the herd. When footage was shown to Terrie and Dave, they confirmed it was Diesel, who looked healthy and happy with his adopted family. Mrs Drewry said it was such a relief to know what happened and that “He’s living his best life.”, she continued “To catch him would be next to impossible, he is truly a wild burro now. Out there doing what he’s raised to do.”

The story of Diesel and the elks is a lovely life lesson for us all.

WALKING HAS SO MANY BENEFITS!

I’ve always loved walking and one of the positives of our whole Covid experience was that many others fell in love with it too.

Walking as a form of exercise is so easily accessible for people of all ages and fitness levels. The more regularly you do it, the easier it gets. It can be done at the drop of a hat – just exit your front door and head off or you can enjoy researching beautiful places to visit and plan routes to explore and enjoy.

Over the years I have visited many places and the whole experience of being outdoors and walking in nature has been so rewarding, mentally and physically. The serene repetition of nature makes walking a very mindful experience and you get the benefits of sunshine helping your body produce vitamins which are so important for our bones and tissues. The rhythm of walking creates a good workout for our muscles and improves our balance. You can walk fast or slow, uphill or downhill and experience the firmness of pavements or softness of the ground in fields. Our respiratory and cardiovascular systems both get a good workout. You can also walk alone and contemplate or in family or friendship groups and have a social experience. If you live on your own or don’t have anyone to walk with,

I generally walk in a very good pair of trainers if doing roads or paths but also have a good pair of walking boots/shoes. Both are an investment, keeping your feet comfortable and blister free. It is always important to check the weather when you are due to walk so you have the correct clothing to walk in. It is also important when doing longer/ more demanding walks or just new walks, to have a map or walking guide book and a phone with you just in case any unexpected incidents happen. Walking poles can also be very helpful both for the fit and unfit to help keep you balanced when walking.

Anyway, please do try and get out and enjoy the amazing places we have on our doorstep or plan some walking adventures over the later summer and autumn.

As always keep a balance to your exercise routine – yoga, pilates and gym can help keep you fit and strong all round too. If you have a mechanical issue to sort out before you start or that crops up as you get going, an Osteopath will always be happy to give you treatment and advice.

The Ramblers Association run all sorts of walks graded in level and length and are very welcoming to all. Locally you will also find many walking groups.

A walk in the morning before work, at lunchtime or after work can break up the demands of sitting all day and also helps clear your mind.

Charity News ROTARY CLUB LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS

Bramhall and Woodford Rotary Club is always looking out for new members. We know that sometimes people have the wrong idea about Rotary. Have a look at the points below and find out more at bwrotary.org If you would like to meet us, and possibly join (you can just try us out!) then email secretary@ bwrotary.org.uk Remember - you only have to want to help people and have fun!

n Think Rotary is all “men in suits”? Think again. Hardly anybody wears a suit (but you can if you want to). Our president, immediate past president, treasurer, social chair and chief fund raiser are women as are several other members.

n Think Rotary is all serious stuff? Think again. Fellowship and fun are essential. Our social activities are many and varied - crown green and ten pin bowling, canal trips, restaurant visits, walks, garden parties and so much more. Even our fundraising can be fun (fashion shows, Xmas Santas, The Duck Race!)

n Think Rotary is a secret society? Think again. At our recent club assembly we had several non Rotarian visitors. We openly presented our budget, our subscriptions and each committee’s plans for the year. No secret words, handshakes or anything else!

n Think you have to be old to join Rotary? Think again. There is no lower or upper age limit. We have members who joined in their 30s. We value you, not your age!

n Think all Rotarians are business owners? Think again. Our club has retired people, a dentist, a nurse, a landlord, a consultant, a communications practitioner and more.

n Think Rotary is only for rich people? Think again. Our subs are £120pa and meals are £16. You don’t have to have the meal to attend a meeting.

n Think Rotary is all about business? Think again. Rotary is all about helping others and having fun.

n Think Rotary is just a local Club? Think again. Rotary exists in just about every country, has 33,000 clubs and 1.4m members!

n Think Rotary members have to attend every week? Think again. In our club all we ask is that you come when you can. For many that is often. For some very rarely.

THE THREE CHEDDARS

(…possibly the oldest boy band in the world…)

Three good friends from Bramhall Golf Club have, over the last two years, developed a fantastic act that has attracted critical acclaim and thoroughly entertained audiences around the local area. The three tenors (humorously renamed cheddars) have over 120 years combined experience in the music industry, each having specialised in a different genre of music.

and has had music featured on BBC radio and toured internationally. Bob Morris is a highly acclaimed Elvis tribute act with hundreds of appearances in the North West.

Paul Mizen, historically named ‘The Manchester Velvet Crooner’, has appeared in Manchester’s best known night clubs and music venues singing songs made famous by the Rat Pack.

Stephen Sheard was bassist and a lead singer in rocker bands’ Kings Ransom’ and ‘Ransom’

Their act features music charting the development of music over the last 70 years and incorporates a stunning professionally produced light, laser and video show. For more information and booking opportunities, please contact Bob on 07772 714790.

MAKE TIME TO JOIN A PILATES CLASS!

The children are back at school so whether you are a parent or grandparent take some welldeserved ME time. With more time on your hands now is the time to join a Pilates class. It’s well known that physically active can lead to a healthier and happier life.

Pilates is a great form of exercise and after a few sessions you will start to feel the benefits of regular exercise.

However, before you join your first class here are a few things you need to know.

Focus on Quality over Quantity

Pilates isn’t about speed or lots of reps. It’s about precise movements, proper form, and engaging your core with every exercise. This can be surprisingly challenging but ultimately leads to better results and a lower risk of injury. It’s all about the breath

Breath plays a crucial role in Pilates. Proper breathing techniques help activate your core muscles, improve oxygen flow, and enhance your focus. Your teacher will guide you on breath control throughout the class, so pay attention and breathe deeply.

Listen to your body

Don’t push yourself beyond your limits. Pilates is a progressive exercise program, so it’s natural to feel challenged but not overwhelmed. If you experience any pain, stop the exercise and let your teacher know. They can offer modifications or suggest alternative exercises.

Body Awareness

Pilates will make you hyper-aware of your body’s alignment and movement patterns. You might discover imbalances or weaknesses you weren’t aware of before. Embrace this awareness; it’s the first step to correcting these issues and improving your overall movement. Give it time to see results

Like any new exercise routine, consistency is key with Pilates. Don’t expect drastic changes overnight. Be patient, attend your classes regularly, and gradually, you’ll notice improvements in your strength, flexibility, posture, and overall well-being.

Be open to modifications

If you have any injuries or limitations, don’t hesitate to speak with your teacher beforehand. They can modify exercises to ensure you can participate safely and effectively. What Pilates classes are there?

Pilates Matwork Classes

The most popular form of Pilates is matwork. Matwork is a more traditional form of Pilates, which as it has been developed has incorporated the use of equipment such as balls, stretch bands, foam rollers or magic circles.

High Intensity Power Pilates

HIP Pilates is a more dynamic form of Pilates that combines the precision and focus of a traditional Pilates session with the dynamic energy of a high intensity workout.

Combining core strength, balance and coordination with an energetic cardiovascular element HIP Pilates is the answer to many people’s search for a functional ‘feel good’ workout.

One-to-One Pilates Classes

Concerned about being the new student? Then a one-to-one class can be a good way to start. Both the session format and the exercises given are tailored to suit your needs and objectives. These sessions allow for greater progression and development and are a must for anyone requiring that individual attention.

Pilates is for life and can be life changing, so make sure you take some me-time and join a Body Control Pilates class now!
