Welcome to the December / January issue of SK Cheadle Hulme & Cheadle. With the dark nights well and truly upon us it really does feel like winter is closing in. Which as the front cover alludes to, Christmas is on its way.
This month
This month we have cut the events pages down to just the event name and phone number. As we are just coming out of the second lockdown, I’m guessing most of them won’t be up and running until next year. But as usual if you do want any more information please give them a call and I’m sure they will be able to let you know what’s going on.
Community News Page 18
Page 28 focuses in on the wonderful group “Friends of Hesketh Park & Mellor Green” and the work they are doing around the area. Also, Subway in Cheadle Village are asking for a small donation that can go a very long way this winter. Finally, Page 34 is dedicated to two stories; firstly we focus on the great news that “Santa Claus is coming to town”. Bramhall & Woodford Rotary have moved mountains to get this annual tradition on, so please support it if you can. The second story is about our old friends at Fuzzy Goose. They have embarked on the charity campaign to “turn Instagram pink” in aid of Prevent Breast Cancer. So, may I wish you a Merry Christmas and here’s hoping for a better New Year! All the best

As a result, we have more space for our community news pages. Page 10 is all about “Just Helping” Christmas tree collections for St Ann’s Hospice; this year more than ever, they need your help. Pages 18 and 24 are focusing on two very different businesses and how they are coping with the forced lockdowns to their businesses. They are the Church Inn and Flow with Sophie (Yoga instruction) respectively.
Community news
eing the oldest hostelry in Cheadle Hulme, The Church Inn will have faced many challenges throughout the years and none more so than the coronavirus pandemic. We managed to catch up with Edward Bromley, Church Inn Manager to ask how they’ve adapted through such a difficult time. “When the news hit back in March that there was to be a national lockdown and our pub had to close came as a shock to say the least. Our main priority was to ensure the safety of both our customers and staff but with a business effectively ‘on hold’ for the foreseeable future it was time to adapt and fast. Our welcoming flower filled outdoor terrace was the obvious choice for a takeaway coffee shop which over the months has now become the hub of Cheadle Hulme. The positive feedback from customers has been fantastic and the demand for a coffee and cheeky pastry has flourished. A hearty breakfast menu was also introduced and continues to be a popular addition to our menu range. During periods when we have been allowed to open the terrace has been a popular choice, with undercover shelter, heaters and lightning, it’s now a useable area day or night, rain or shine!” “We also felt it was important to support local, independent businesses where we could, so our
delicious range of artisan tea and coffee blends are brought to you by the fabulous ‘Chadwicks of Cheshire’. Our pub is synonymous for serving first class food so this was another area we adapted. Offering a taste of The Church Inn in your own home by way of a takeaway has been a tremendous success. This service is continuing to run by popular demand, so you never need to miss out on your favourite dish. Also being a pub beer is our speciality so we introduced takeaway Church Inn Growlers, so now you can drink your favourite cask ale or lager from the comfort of your armchair.” “We offered and continue to offer reductions off our menu range to NHS staff, our way of thanking them for the truly outstanding work they do for us all. By adapting our business we have successfully managed to remain viable, retain our dedicated staff members and serve our community, all of the above would not have possible without our loyal customer base. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their continued support, it truly means the world to us all. During these exceptional times our friendly service and undisputed food continues. Why not call in and see for yourselves”. www.robinsonsbrewery.com/pubs-inns-andhotels/find-a-pub/a-e/churchinn

Child Arrangements: Resolving Disputes
here are many ways to resolve disputes over children between separated parents. Local Barrister and Mediator, James Miller, explains some of the options available. When couples separate it can of course be extremely difficult but there are many ways in which parents can try to resolve their disputes. From experience, I would suggest it is much better for separated parents to work out any differences themselves before going to court. A bench of three lay magistrates or a single district judge may have very limited background information or knowledge about a family’s particular circumstances. I often ask my clients whether they really want a stranger to decide, amongst other things, when and where they can see their child. Another important consideration is that family law, like general civil litigation, is determined on the “balance of probabilities”. This should not be confused with criminal law, where the jury must be sure of a person’s guilt “beyond reasonable doubt”. If the parties have different versions of what happened in a case, a “fact finding” hearing will be held and the court will determine which version is to be preferred. This brings me back to my question to clients. Is it wise to go to court so an outsider can decide what likely happened and where my child should live? Before resorting to court proceedings, separated parents should consider the following options: • Negotiation – where discussions have broken down, a professional person could be appointed to look at matters afresh with a view to reaching agreement.
8 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - December 2020/January 2021
• Mediation – An impartial third party can assist the parties in resolving conflict through the use of specialized communication techniques. • Separated Parents Information Programme (SPIP) – this course is delivered on behalf of the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (“Cafcass”) and is designed to help separated parents better understand and respond differently to conflict and communication. • Parenting Plan – this plan can help clarify the arrangements parties need to put in place to care for their child after separation, without having to go to court. Where none of the above options assist, ultimately parents do have the right to go to court for a Child Arrangement Order, which is governed by Section 8 of the Children Act 1989. A Child Arrangement Order will determine where your child will live, when your child will spend time with each parent and when and what other types of contact shall place. In reaching a decision, although the parents’ feelings will be listened to, the overriding consideration for the Bench will be what is in the best interests of the child. Proceedings can often be lengthy and stressful so parents should consider their options carefully.

LET US COLLECT AND RECYLCE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE IN AID OF We are once again pleased to hear that JUST HELPING will be running their annual Christmas Tree collection in the South Manchester area including SK7 & SK8. The 2021 St Ann’s Hospice Christmas Tree collection takes place from 14th to 17th January 2021. The collection is in aid of St Ann’s Hospice and local charities. You can register your tree from 15th November 2020 at
www.charityxmastreecollection.com The collection has been run by community volunteers, sponsors and donors for over 8 years in partnership with St Ann’s Hospice who receive 80% of the net proceeds. The average donation is over £12 per tree. The 2020 collection raised over £30k for St Ann’s Hospice! Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of St Ann’s, said: “We’re approaching our 50th birthday in 2021 and the fact that we’re still here after half a century and still able to support local patients is down to the amazing support of our local communities. Everyone who makes a donation really does enable us to keep our doors open and allows us to continue to provide specialist care to those who need it most. Thank you.” Emma Dixon, Director of Clinical Services at St Ann’s Hospice, said: “This has been a really hard year for all of us, especially at the hospice where our teams have been working tirelessly on the front line to make sure that patients and their loved ones can access the care they need. We’ve adapted and grown our services to 10 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - December 2020/January 2021
ensure they still meet the needs of those who rely on us for specialist hospice care, and can only continue to do so thanks to the support of local people. Please do consider registering your tree and making a donation so we can continue to provide care into 2021 and beyond.” Dr Paul Jarvis, Director of Business Development at St Ann’s Hospice, said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has really hit us hard at St Ann’s, with many of our fundraising events and activities cancelled. As an organisation, we need to raise around £20,000 a day to keep our services running, and we need the support of our local communities now more than ever. We can only keep our doors open if we continue to raise the money we need - the care of patients both now and in the future is reliant on your support, so thank you for taking part in this Christmas tree scheme. We really appreciate everything you do for St Ann’s and the people we care for.” Why have JUST HELPING recycle your Christmas Tree away in 2021? n You don’t have to put it in your own car and have to clean up the mess! n All trees are recycled in an environmentally friendly way. n Your donation goes to local non for-profit organisations with 80% going to St Ann’s Hospice.

BEFORE AND AFTER BEDROOM DESIGN
Y
ou’ve had a hard day, work didn’t go quite to plan today, the kids are still utilising your generous taxi service and the dog decided today was the day to swallow dive into a muddy puddle. Your bedroom is calling but when you finally make it there it’s bland and dated. It needs some Va Va Voom, some love and attention with a sprinkle of style but there’s always something else to do and quite frankly you don’t know where to start. Here’s some tips on how to re-design, style and transform your bedroom so it’s worthy of holding Prosecco parties there with your friends (Covid rules allowing obvs!) or just hiding in your sanctuary of calm. Look around you, which are your favourite cafes, restaurants or bars? Look for inspiration on the internet, there are a number of great apps for interiors out there. Work out what you like and what you don’t. In the bedroom shown here I’ve gone for a modern, slightly French style. It’s light and bright, chic with lots of feminine touches, a thoroughly up to date boudoir. It’s great to re-use existing furniture but you have to change enough to make an impact, invest in items that will make an obvious difference. You may be able to keep the same bed as the bedding, cushions and throws will take centre stage for instance. Here the walls are painted a soft grey with long, flowing cream curtains, all very neutral so as to keep the backdrop calm and soothing. A beautiful, soft, quality canvas to add the main items to. The quirky fire surround that’s an old
12 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - December 2020/January 2021
item picked up for a few pounds then painted and distressed to give this crackled, vintage look (there are loads of videos online showing the technique) is an unusual focal point and allows for a bigger space as it’s much slimmer than the drawers. There is now a very light wood floor with a rug creating textures and layers of differing finishes. The bedside table was carefully selected, it’s an antique oak finish with the curved top to warm the room up and tie in with the French boudoir look. As most of the items up to now are light and neutral, the duvet takes pride of place with a lacy pattern perfectly finishing the look. The curves of the buttoned chair are a perfect accompaniment but so, too would be a curved, ornate mirror. Finishing touches aren’t to be underestimated as they tie it all together. The way the books are stacked, how the candles are grouped, flowers with a pop of pink balanced around the room all add to the charm. Be brave, or give me a shout to help! Knowing where to find what you’re looking for is often half of the battle but shopping is also half of the fun.

Mindset Advice
Tis The Season To Be... Grateful.
W
ith the life we knew a distant memory, the national economy under pressure, local lockdowns everywhere, and with masks, visors and hand gel making us feel like we are extras in ‘Scrubs’ every time we do the school run... it is easy to become fed up, agitated and anxious right now. On the face of it 2020 isn’t going to win any ‘Best Year Yet’ awards. Even Channel 5 might struggle to make one of those programmes that count down the ‘best bits’ of 2020, because there have been none... Wouldn’t it be great if it could all just go back to how it was in 2019... Hang on a minute, didn’t everyone constantly whinge about 2019 too? Brexit, the environment, general elections, global trade wars, tension in the Middle East etc etc... Ok, 2018 then! Hang on a minute, wasn’t that the year all the global celebrity treasures and household names died? When everyone wanted to wrap David Attenborough in cotton wool lest he be taken too?... or was that 2017? The truth is, it doesn’t matter. I’m not saying that 2020 hasn’t been weird, difficult and incredibly disruptive, it is just that ultimately we aren’t that good at focusing on the positives in any given year in history. You don’t hear many people speaking positively about living in Britain at all in fact, or with gratitude for what they DO have. The focus has become far more on what is wrong with the country, the economy, the government and everything else. I hope that we are now seeing, in the wake of the COVID havoc that things weren’t actually that bad for us Brits after all. It is very easy to forget that the country whinged about so often by its inhabitants is the country that thousands of people die each year trying to reach. It is the country that doctors, lawyers and teachers from war torn territories across the globe will risk the lives of themselves and their families to reach, because it is so much better, safer and more prosperous than where they are fleeing from. Times are hard right now without doubt, but they’re never ‘easy’. Life is a complex and
14 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - December 2020/January 2021
challenging affair and you can go back as far as you like in history and you won’t find much in the way of prolonged, blissful times of plenty. What if we actually have a lot to be grateful for right now? It is eye opening that even in the midst of a pandemic there are millions of people around the world that would rather be struggling in Britain than struggling anywhere else, and they can’t live here, but we can. What if we could be grateful for the freedoms we still enjoy rather than resentful for the temporary restrictions we currently face? The benefits of daily gratitude practices are vast and well documented, but there isn’t space to go into them here. All you need to know is that spending a few minutes each evening thinking or writing about what you are grateful for in your life, will change your life for the better. Grateful people exercise more, sleep better, perform better at work, have better relationships (personally and professionally) and they achieve more of their goals, they also get less ill, along with many more benefits. So, no matter what you are going through right now or have been through, you can’t change what has happened by being angry, upset or by focussing on what is wrong. You CAN however improve your mindset in the present time with a focus on gratitude and begin to approach the future with a more positive and optimistic outlook. It’s not instant, it will take weeks or months of regular practice in all honestly but START NOW. Remember, the night is always darkest before the dawn. I am sure we will all be back to some form of normality sooner than we think, and with Christmas not too far away let’s start to count our blessings and to focus on what we DO have and what is good in the world.

Sticky Toffee Apple Pudding Recipe T
his winter is going to be all about hunkering down, getting the fire on, maybe lighting some delightfully smelly candles and just focusing on our family and ourselves. (Maybe a few socially distanced friends too!) I’m going to be thinking about comfort food – casseroles and nice easy desserts for easy eating over the weekends. I won’t have to worry about fitting into the LBD this year so I’ll leave the diet til 2021. I made this the other day as I had some Bramley apples delivered and I’d already made apple sauce. It was the easiest pudding I think I’ve ever made and was delicious with some lovely vanilla ice cream (M&S not home made this time). Serves 6 85g butter, melted 140g self-raising flour 100g golden caster sugar 1tbsp baking powder 200ml milk 1 egg, beaten 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 Bramley apples – peeled, cored and sliced 140g dark brown sugar 50g pecans, chopped

STEP 1 Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Grease a 2-litre/31/2-pint ovenproof dish lightly with butter. Tip the flour, sugar and baking powder, along with a pinch of salt, into a large bowl. Mix together the milk, butter, egg and vanilla extract and stir into the dry ingredients until you get a smooth batter. Arrange the apples in the dish, spoon the batter on top and smooth with a knife until the apples are covered. STEP 2 For the topping, pour 250ml boiling water over the dark brown sugar and stir together until smooth. Pour the liquid over the pudding mixture, then scatter over the pecans. Bake for about 40 mins until the pudding has risen and is golden. Use a big spoon to serve the pudding, making sure you get some of the gooey caramel sauce covering the bottom of the dish. Serve with pouring cream, warm custard or vanilla i ce cream.

eing the oldest hostelry in Cheadle Hulme, The Church Inn will have faced many challenges throughout the years and none more so than the coronavirus pandemic. We managed to catch up with Edward Bromley, Church Inn Manager to ask how they’ve adapted through such a difficult time. “When the news hit back in March that there was to be a national lockdown and our pub had to close came as a shock to say the least. delicious range of artisan tea and coffee blends are brought to you by the fabulous ‘Chadwicks of Cheshire’. SOPHIE’S YOGA JOURNEY
ontinuing our theme of calling in to local businesses that have been effected by lockdown, we caught up with local resident, Sophie Withington, who returned from a four year stay in Australia in 2019 with dreams of setting up her own yoga studio in Cheadle Hulme. Whilst living in Melbourne, Sophie started her yoga journey, practicing up to four times a week and quickly noticed not only the physical benefits but the mental benefits too. Whilst living in a new country and with new surroundings, yoga helped with her selfconfidence, mindfulness and resilience. After returning to England Sophie swiftly departed again to train in her 200 hr Yoga teacher training in Southern Spain. On returning to Cheadle Hulme, she set up her practice in a newly refurbished studio in Central Building on Station Road. However, just as classes started to build up, everything came to close with the first lockdown. Having kept up a regular practice in the family garden during the summer she was excited to start classes back up again in July. With an offer of varied classes such as Vinyasa flow and Relax & unwind Sophie started to increase her following yet again. Sadly, the second lock down hit. This time she has decided to move her classes online. Happily,
24 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - December 2020/January 2021
the online classes have proved a great success. Sophie says ‘The benefits of yoga for both body and mind have never been more important than in these times when people are confined to their homes more and enduring increased stress’ To find out more about Sophie’s classes go to www.flowwithsophie.co.uk or on facebook: Flow-With-Sophie

“I’m working from home” –
T
2020, the year when this phrase was no longer a signal for a potential skive!
he Covid pandemic has wreaked havoc upon people, families, communities, businesses and the economy in our country and in almost every other nation on the planet. People talk of the ‘new normal’ but the scales have been tipped up so many times that the memory of what was ‘normal’ may be in real danger of fading forever. It would be impossible to overstate how dreadful the impact of Covid has been, but for some officebased workers positives are emerging. In March we were told to work from home if we could, so offices everywhere hurriedly decamped their staff. Droves of people left their familiar working environments, clutching laptops under their arms not knowing when they might ever return. Since then we have adapted to not seeing one another each day, and to counter the loss of face to face working, we have begun to use new techniques and processes some of which have actually started to improve how we work. Amstrad offered us landline video phones in 2004 but no one bought them. People didn’t want to talk and see each other. Then more recently Skype appeared and we realised we could see distant relations at Christmas without needing to set them a place at the dinner table. But Covid has given us Zoom, and the dictionary must surely be close to accepting ‘to Zoom’ someone as a new verb. Zoom brings us together and perhaps for the first time the video call is welcome; we were ready for it. Zoom always seems to work and the ability to share screens fluently with one another really does make us look back and question all of those journeys either up and down motorways or crammed into overcrowded trains. A client’s office manager told me today that he is moving to Australia but once there, for now at least, there were no plans for him to leave his Bramhall based job! Almost all
26 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - December 2020/January 2021
of his duties can be fulfilled on the other side of the planet, and with careful planning and flexibility on his part he can work around the time difference. In the home counties and towns and cities up and down the country, many office workers are now looking further afield to live. My brothers each work in London and over the years had spent more time travelling to work every week than was surely sustainable for them, their families or the planet. But now that neither of them has been to the office for over six months, along with hundreds of thousands of others, they now realise that a strong broadband connection is now the key ingredient to a potential move almost anywhere. Personally I expect that in future I will always welcome the flexibility of being at home some of the week; I think many will. A working day might end up being longer than usual but being at home means I can walk our dog; receive a parcel from Amazon; go for a run and even prepare dinner and still get my work done. It feels like there has been a recognition that people can be trusted to work away from the office. A good work/life balance that has always eluded me seems plausible for the first time. ‘Working from home’ may in the past have raised eyebrows; there was an potential risk of skiving, but in these few months it may very well have become ingrained as a respected element of how office work will be fulfilled from now on. FRIENDS OF HESKETH PARK & MELLOR GREEN – CONSERVATION OF POLLINATORS
T
he Friends of Hesketh Park formed 10 years ago & adopted Mellor Green, council land, 7 years ago. The 2 greenspaces are near Cheadle Hulme Library at the centre of Cheadle Hulme. We are developing Mellor Green as an “urban wildlife area” with an emphasis on providing conditions to allow insect pollinators to thrive. All pollinators are essential; more than half our food produced in UK relies on insect pollination and many garden flowers and most wildflowers require pollination. While urban expansion is a threat to global biodiversity, some pollinators can do well in urban areas, given suitable habitat. In the UK there are 3 main groups of pollinators - butterflies/moths, hoverflies and bees (with other small flies and beetles). Hoverflies are an important group but receive much less attention. The Green is managed to create a wide range of habitats with grass of various heights, other perennial vegetation, habitat piles, a “Bug Hotel”
T
and mixed native hedging around the site (with fifteen native woody species). While benefitting pollinator conservation, it also benefits many other “bugs” such as beetles. There is now a wide variety of floral resources on the Green from March to October. We have also sown wildflower patches in Hesketh Park and built a new bug hotel. We want to help create a network of patches of pollen/nectar rich flowers within Cheadle Hulme & eventually across Stockport; with small areas in all our greenspaces, particularly those with volunteers. Hopefully this will encourage other landowners to sow, or allow others to sow, “nectar rich flower patches” on suitable areas and also residents to sow or plant flowers in their garden for pollinators and create a “Stockport Networks 4 Pollinators”. This will then join the B-lines for Pollinators for NW England being created by “Bug Life” the conservation charity. www.Facebook.com/FriendsofHeskethPark/

POSITIVE AGEING
here are two sides of the journey of ageing they are; “It’s no fun getting old” and “Age is just a number don’t let it define you”.
Getting older does not have to be just about body aches, illnesses, medications, less energy, being lonely and forgetful. It can be about traveling, being healthy, learning and increasing your energy. Research has suggested we can slow down the negative parts of ageing and enhance the positives of living our lives. Our attitudes can guide that journey, we can either fall into the role of “patient” or “I will enjoy my life” despite these setbacks. Adjusting our attitudes and trying to become more positive and less pessimistic is a great starting point. “POSITIVE ageing” is a term used to describe the process of maintaining a positive attitude, feeling good about yourself, keeping fit and healthy, and engaging fully in life. Ageing is often associated with many rewarding experiences. It is, however, also a time when significant changes might occur. For example, some people experience changes in physical functioning, social networks, employment, and bereavement can become more common. Keeping a positive attitude toward ageing is particularly important as it allows you to continue to feel good and have a sense of control as you face another part of the life cycle. As people age it is natural for them to move in and out of periods of positive ageing. But those who age positively live longer and healthier lives
30 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - December 2020/January 2021
and enjoy a better quality of life. Maintaining a positive attitude The way you feel about yourself and the ageing process can affect how you view life and the extent to which you are involved in activities and the opportunities life offers. If you can make choices and have control over important aspects of your life, and take part in and enjoy activities, you are more likely to feel good about yourself. Staying connected Social interaction and relationships with others are associated with positive ageing and feeling optimistic about life. Maintaining social networks through membership of clubs, engaging in voluntary work and keeping in touch with family encourages interaction with others, prevents isolation and promotes good mental and physical health. Maintaining a positive attitude, especially in COVID times, is good advice whatever our age.

I
Welcome to the Christmas Edition of In Stitches…
n this article, I will be suggesting some Christmas shopping ideas and I have a fab giveaway that you cannot miss! 2020 has been an incredible year and some of you may be glad that it is coming to a close. It’s been brilliant to see that sewing has been picked up by so many people during the lockdown - I have noticed machines are sold out everywhere! Companies have reported a big boom in crafts of all sorts and its hardly surprising. I am sure you’re reading this thinking about all of the new crafts you may have taken up, cooking, gardening and baking (if you were able to buy flour) being most popular. I, for one, have found myself dabbling in some of those. I know I was planning to teach Wedding and prom apparel for the coming summer, and boy was it warm this year? I ended up sewing scrubs with a group of 800 others, many who were in furlough and of varying vocations, coming together to help the NHS. Over 1,000 sets were made, 1000’s of bags and hairbands and when I handed the reigns over, masks - I salute you! We pulled off a fantastic result for Stockport! If you’re looking for a sewing machine to treat yourself or a loved one to over the Christmas and winter period, you might want to consider some brands we don’t usually consider. My favourites for the overlocker is the Jaguar 2015D which has been updated to the 099D model, but the earlier version is much superior. I can finally say, I own a Jag - even if it is only a sewing machine. As for sewing machines, the brand Necchi have brought out some amazing machines for the beginner, right to the more advanced sewer. The machines are lightweight, strong and powerful,

and come in a range of colours - I sound like I’m doing a sales pitch, but rest assured, these reviews are independent, and you can catch them on my fast growing Youtube channel. However, don’t forget that with the reduced availability, there are some excellent vintage machine available in the marketplaces online, and I teach you how to repair machines too! As for gadgets and gizmos, you really do want to treat yourself to good threads and I always recognise Gutermann as a good brand. Students in my classroom have always seen the huge difference between a cheap thread and these good threads a countless number of times. Gutermann have released 100% recycled threads in all different colours, which I am a big fan of. It makes me feel so much better about my sewing. In fact, I want to encourage good sewing practices so much so, that I am offering one lucky reader the chance to win some recycled threads this coming holiday! To enter: What are Gutterman’s new recycled threads are made from? Send your answers to our lovely Editor, Simon, who will randomly select the winner and you must enter before 4th December to win (Find Simon’s information at the front of this magazine). Don’t forget to join me on my YouTube channel and socials over advent @Abis Den. We are giving away an advent gift every day! Some of my favourite brands have joined in and we have some fabulous gifts to send out. Let’s bring 2020 to a nice close and welcome 2021 with hopes for better days where we can all safely meet again. BRAMHALL & WOODFORD ROTARY CLUB SANTA’S CHRISTMAS VILLAGE TOUR
nless we suffer a total lockdown, Santa WILL be out and about on his annual Village Tour but he will be in his imaginary bubble with everyone staying safe. Social distancing is his watchword. Santa’s Elves have been very busy lately. Not only have they been preparing the Float to take Santa on his annual tour, but they have also been checking out the routes around the villages. Santa will begin his Tour in his sleigh on Saturday 5th December, on Bramhall and Woodford Rotary Club’s Float, and will then be out and about for 16 nights in Bramhall, Woodford and Cheadle Hulme inviting the children to post a letter saying what they would REALLY like for Christmas. Once again he will be visiting the Woodford Garden Village to see the boys and girls there.
C
The Christmas Float is a well-known fund raiser which has been in existence for over forty years raising thousands of pounds for many deserving causes in that time. This year sixteen local organisations and charities will be visiting most of the streets in the area with Santa and helping him with the collection. Please encourage your young ones to write a letter to Santa so that when you hear or see the Float, they can pop it into his postbox. No leaflets this year but local social media sites will carry details of the night when he will be coming to your street to pick up your Christmas wish list and bring you some early Christmas goodies. Don’t forget to track him with the SantaTracker on our website www.bwrotary.org , with daily information on the Facebook page (Bramhall and Woodford Rotary).
FUZZY GOOSE GET IN THE PINK FOR PREVENT BREAST CANCER
headle Hulme-based fashion boutique and showroom, Fuzzy Goose enlisted the help of four fabulous local models to highlight the start of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The gorgeous models dressed in every shade of pink imaginable to showcase their ensembles and posed with pink balloons in front of a glittering, pink, sequinned wall for Prevent Breast Cancer’s Pink Pix Campaign at The Alderley Edge Hotel. Prevent Breast Cancer aim to ‘turn Instagram Pink’ with their #PinkPix campaign and Fuzzy Goose certainly got the (pink) ball rolling. The charity needs lots of eye-catching pink pictures to grab followers’ attention, stop them scrolling past and make them look, learn and thus raise awareness of breast cancer signs and symptoms. Awareness is KEY – early stage breast cancer is highly treatable. There was a Fuzzy Goose fundraising fashion show planned for March this year - a sell-out as

usual - but sadly this fell victim to the lockdown, as have many charity events and fundraising initiatives. In the light of this, and to try and raise much needed funds and awareness so the girls put on Cheshire’s first ever Virtual Fashion Show for ladies to watch at leisure in the comfort and safety of their own homes. Jo Hoddes, co-owner of Fuzzy Goose, said: “We would like to say a big thank you to the models who donated their time to raise awareness for Prevent Breast Cancer’s Pink Pix Campaign. The charity helps to provide life-changing support for those living with the disease and help fund vital breast cancer research. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. One in eight women in the UK will face it in their lifetime”. For more information on PBC’s #PinkPix campaign: https://preventbreastcancer.org.uk/ get-involved/fundraising/pinkpix/

Time for some Christmas cheer? Fine wine and whisky in demand What’s gathering dust in your cellar – or that old drinks cabinet for that matter? I ask because fine wine, whisky and other spirits are a booming auction market – so much so Hansons holds regular Cellar Auctions. You just might be popping a cork to toast sales success this Christmas, and a man who can tell you if it’s time to celebrate is Hansons’ wine and whisky consultant Benjamin Browning. Benjamin started reading about wine at school rather than studying for his O-levels. He found Hugh Johnson’s Wine Atlas of the World more interesting than Shakespeare. He looks forward to seeing what people have tucked away - often not realising the potential value they have. Benjamin can tell you if that bottle of whisky, fine port or case of red could get bids flying in, and it’s worth delving into your cupboards because auction prices are impressive. In 2019, a bottle The Macallan Fine & Rare 60 Year Old 1926 whisky sold for $1.9 million around £1.5 million. This price smashed auction records. The Macallan is one of the most highly revered whisky brands in the world. Its distillery in Craigellachie, Moray, in the Highlands of Scotland, founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, is renowned for quality. In 2018 Hansons sold a special addition bottle of The Macallan whisky bottled in 1996 to mark the 35th anniversary of satirical magazine Private Eye. The vatting produced 5,000 bottles and included one cask A special addition bottle of The from 1961. This special edition, Macallan whisky featuring a screen-printed label to mark the 35th anniversary of by legendary illustrator Ralph Private Eye sold Steadman, achieved £3,100. for £3,100.
36 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - December 2020/January 2021
Hansons has also sold a bottle of The Macallan 18 year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, distilled in 1966, for £2,200, and a Macallan Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky, 10 years old for £380. Meanwhile, five Hennessy bottles Cognac made £480; a bottle of vintage Tanqueray gin made £290 The Cellars at Bishton Hall, our Staffordshire Auction and a wine lot featuring Centre. Chateau Canon, St Emilion 1967, Chateau Latour a Pomerol 1959 and Clets des Legats, Chateau neuf du Pape 1991 was contested to £430. Port is popular, too. A case of Dow’s 1980 port made £640 and nine bottles of mixed vintage Port reached £450. Plus, in 2017 One of two bottles of 1871 vintage port two bottles which sold for £370 and £400. of vintage port dating back to 1871 sold for £370 and £400 respectively. Entries are invited for Hansons wide range of auctions and home visit valuations are available in your area. Please email service@ hansonsauctioneers.co.uk. Keep healthy & well with online Pilates Classes this winter
ow will you use technology to keep fit and healthy this winter? With the nights drawing in and heat waves being replaced with wind and rain we may just feel like hibernating. But maybe now is the time to get to grips with online technology and use it to serve you, whether that’s searching for healthy winter recipes, downloading a fitness tracker or trying out your first online Pilates class! Pilates is a refreshing mind-body workout… By emphasizing breathing, correct spinal and pelvic alignment, and concentration on smooth, flowing movement, you become in tune with your body. In Pilates the quality of movement is more important than the quantity of repetitions. Correct breathing is essential, and helps you execute movements with maximum power and efficiency, learning to breathe properly can reduce stress. When the muscles are stretched, circulation improves. This, combined with the deep breathing associated with Pilates exercise, brings more oxygen to our muscles, creating healthier cells throughout our bodies. Stress and anxiety can weaken the immune. Pilates is great for calming our nervous systems and relieving stress because you are solely focusing on your body. Pilates also helps to increase energy levels and aid sleep, to allow
40 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - December 2020/January 2021
you to function better with the demands of your day-to-day life. By eliminating the stress and anxiety, Pilates is working to keep you healthy and calm off the mat. Another way that the system is boosted through Pilates is that when we do Pilates exercises our brains produce more chemicals that are vital to our well being, such as serotonin and endorphins. This not only adds to our feeling of wellbeing, but it actually boosts the immune system, by ensuring that our brains are functioning properly, releasing the right amounts of chemicals that it is supposed to release. So, when you finish an online Pilates class, you can be confident knowing that you not only made your muscles stronger, and balanced your mind and your body, but you’ve also boosted your immune system, which will help to keep you healthy as well!
