SK Cheadle Hulme & Cheadle

Welcome to the December/January issue of SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle.

The countdown to Christmas has begun, even if it still feels too early to me!

On that note the Manchester-born charity Just Helping are gearing up again this year to collection all your used Christmas trees! Find out all the details on page 30.

Last month I was delighted to attend the fantastic fashion show put on by St Ann’s Hospice at John Lewis which raised much-needed funds for their Build It Together project. Read all about it on page 20.

When the S.T.N.A got in touch and asked for our help earlier this month, I had to look up what it meant. It is the Stockport Talking Newspaper, and it deserves to be more well-known. Find out more on page 34.

If you like gardening, then why not help Regreen Cheadle Hulme? They are looking to welcome new volunteers to the group. We have all the details on page 44.

Whilst we do our best to print all the local events, we sometimes receive them too late to print. So why not follow us on Instagram @skmagazines and keep up to date after the magazines are out.

If you are planning an event and would like us to spread the word, please do not hesitate to drop me an e-mail with the details. I have now got a handy form you can complete.

See you next time.

WINTER MAINTENANCE Garden Talk

Hello there,

It’s that time of year again when we travel to and from work in the dark – and the winter weather (like every season in the UK) is unpredictable!

I’ve been gardening long enough to see every type of winter weather but the truth is it is very hard to know what each winter will bring.

However, one thing we can all do, whatever the weather, is to make some preventative protection for our plants. Be less tidy

One of the most important and easiest tricks is to be less tidy! This will, I’m sure, delight many readers, but if we are too tidy in winter it exposes the soil and plants to the worst of the winter rain, snow and frost. Leaving the fallen leaves on the ground to decompose and add humus to the soil will give the ground a blanket of protection. Obviously clear the paths of leaves but instead of putting then in the recycle bin, spread then over the roots of the plants.

Delay your pruning

family of garden beneficial hedgehogs using the dry winter stems and leaves for five years now and as much as gardeners hate squirrels they are a great example of a wellbalanced ecological garden, they also eat many garden pests.

In conclusion, I would encourage gardeners to be less tidy in the winter and make March and April your main time for pruning, make it part of your spring clean-up.

Resist the temptation to prune your herbaceous perennial plants in the autumn and leave them until spring. Plan autumn and winter tidying just to remove the broken and untidy stems. The advantage of March pruning is n winter frost is distributed more evenly around the plants giving them more protection and if we prune too early the frost will come and hit the plants even harder, basically giving the plant a second, unwanted, prune.

n wildlife will benefit from the unpruned seedheads and dry litter. We have had a

There is just room to talk about one special plant that is rarely seen but much sort after with garden specialists - the Euonymus. Not the evergreen gold and variegated ground cover Euonymus fortunei, but an upright variety one metre tall, with winter fruit that look like earrings. Euonymus cornutus, Euonymus clivicola or Euonymus ‘Miss Pinky’ (pictured.) will fit into the smallest of gardens, rarely making big shrubs. They are very easy to grow in any moist soil ideally growing with other shrubs and suitable for sun or shade, but the fruit last longer in the shade. They give the most amazing autumn and winter spectacle with loosely hanging orange, red, pink and green fruit. Definitely one to hunt out at specialist nurseries. Happy Winter Gardening!

CAPITAL GAINS TAX –

Some mitigation strategies to consider

One of the expected announcements from the Autumn Budget was the increase in Capital Gains Tax (CGT). CGT is payable when you dispose of an asset (for example, by selling it) for more than you bought it for. The increase in value is subject to CGT. The chancellor hopes to raise £2.5 billion by the increased CGT rates so in the following article, we look at ways of mitigating the amount of CGT you have to pay.

If you sell an asset for less than you bought it for, you may be able to report the loss to HMRC to reduce your taxable gains. When you report a loss, the amount is deducted from any other gains you made in the same tax year. If you don’t have any other gains in the year, you can carry forward the remaining losses to a future tax year. You claim for your loss by including it on your personal tax return, but if you are not registered for Self-Assessment, you can write to HMRC instead. You do not have to report losses straight away - you can claim up to 4 years after the end of the tax year that you disposed of the asset. The important thing to note is that you have to report the loss to be able to offset it against taxable gains.

If you and your spouse or civil partner are living together, any transfer of an asset between you is treated as giving rise to neither a gain nor a loss to the person transferring it. Any amount actually paid is ignored. If the person receiving the asset later disposes of it, they will be treated as if they had paid an amount equal to the total of your costs. This means that the transfer of assets between spouses or civil partners is not subject to CGT. As each spouse or civil partner has a £3,000 annual exemption, transferring a share of an asset to your other half before selling

it can effectively double the annual exemption to £6,000. Furthermore, as CGT rates are dependent on a taxpayer’s income, if one spouse or civil partner is a basic rate taxpayer, while the other is a higher rate taxpayer, it might be useful to transfer the asset to the lower earner to benefit from the reduced rates of CGT.

The above article has touched briefly on some of the potential ways to mitigate the increased CGT rates. There are others which haven’t been touched on such as special reliefs for business assets or the use of stocks and shares ISAs.

There are also various CGT reliefs aimed at investors who are not involved in running a business. The reliefs are; Investors Relief (IR); Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS). These reliefs only apply to investments in company shares and they work in different ways with gains either being subject to a lower rate of CGT or being completely exempt. Tread very carefully because these reliefs have associated conditions. It is always advisable to seek professional advice from an accountant or tax advisor to ensure that you are fulfilling your tax obligations correctly whilst making the most of any available tax saving strategies and reliefs.

Charity News BUILD IT TOGETHER

Staff and volunteers of St Ann’s Hospice took time away from their busy days to strut their stuff at this year’s John Lewis Fashion Show!

The fashion show was organised by the St Ann’s Hospice Fundraising Team with help from John Lewis, Cheadle, with

all proceeds going towards the hospice’s Build it Together Appeal.

St Ann’s Hospice Build It Together is an appeal to raise much needed funds for the delivery of a new hospice site based in Heald Green.

The runway played host to staff and volunteers from different departments throughout the hospice from kitchen staff, fundraising staff, the Rehab Team and even a few children showed off their best style.

Community Fundraiser for St Ann’s Hospice, Julie Peters said the sold-out event was a “phenomenal success”.

“It was great to once again be back at John Lewis, Cheadle for this year’s fashion show. Those who came out in support have helped us raise

approximately £4,000 and for that I can’t thank them enough. I would also like to thank John Lewis, Cheadle once again for their hospitality this year,” Greg said.

So far, St Ann’s Hospice, with the help of supporters, volunteers and the local community in Greater Manchester have raised almost £1,400,000 out of £2,000,000 for the Build it Together Appeal. The hospice is making a big push to raise the final £600,000 to oversee the continued construction of the new building.

THE POTTING SHED

Sky high results with a feast of finds and antiques are certainly in fashion!

Charles Hanson at Hansons Auctioneers in Derbyshire reported a busiest month for the firm some five years The September fine art sale created worldwide interest with buyers in over 32 countries.

Mr Hanson reported our top ten lots were sold to clients outside the country.

An important portrait of William “The Orange” known as William “The Silent” a 16th Century oil painting by Adriaen Thomasz Key, lot 432.  Rose to take £20,000.

Consigned from a Nottinghamshire client lot 308 created Far Eastern interest as a Japanese bronze and mixed metal inlaid figure of Benkei outstripped its guide of £8,000 to £12,000 it doubled to take £19,000.

Lot 7 out of Walsall came a silver Warwick vase which took £8,500 whilst a Portuguese buyer took home an Indo Portuguese mother of pearl dish which took £8,500, having been found on a dining table.

It really was a remarkable sale commented Charles Hanson, “the interesting quality, our team of specialists working towards our fine art sale together with new collectors markets, additional digital advertising and spend on new platforms really gives our clients locally and neighbouring counties a great service and a great market to sell into.  We were thrilled with the results”.

A Rolex uncovered in Nottinghamshire took £14,000, Mr Hanson remarked it was a remarkable price bearing in mind one similar in a London shop was priced slightly below this!

Far Eastern interest and Arabian interest saw a Chinese blue and white planter go from £150 to £10,500.  This really was a remarkable price commented Mr Hanson bearing in mind it had been heavily restored with extensive repairs, this was found in a house in Manchester.

Lot 417 An Edward Lear watercolour uncovered in a Leicestershire home took £10,500 and was found on the Lincolnshire boarder.  The title of Mahabalipooram on the Coromandel Coast appealed to our Arabian buyers.

WHOLE LIFE MONEY MANAGEMENT

In this short article I’m going to take a peek at managing money over a whole life. Life expectancy has increased hugely over the last few generations, although some of that life expectancy is often in less than ideal health. Passing wealth between generations, within a family, needs a re-think as a result of this great longevity.

We can’t take it with us, so how do we ensure our wealth gives us the fun and pleasure it’s intended for?

For a healthy couple it is quite common for at least one of them to live well into their 90s. The implication is that any money they leave to their children will be inherited when the ‘children’ are in their 60s or 70s. What’s the point of that? Inheriting money when you’ve already lived your life.

The simple answer is to leave your money to your grandchildren who are likely to be forming households and having young families when that older generation moves on. That sort of works but the ‘children’ miss out altogether.

There is an associated problem that if you are a saver, you tend to keep accumulating. But our desire to spend is not equal at every stage of our life. A newly retied person in their early 60s might want travel and adventures that they don’t have the energy for in their mid 80s.

To solve these challenges I think we need to look at whole life financial planning. Look to making lifetime gifts to help out the ‘children’ if that is what you want. And in conclusion to maybe die with less money – perhaps much less – but having used your money to have a good time and help those you love.

If you want to talk through your tax and money issues please ring me. I offer a free no obligation initial consultation where very often we can resolve the issue that concerns you. If you then want to engage us for paid work we will agree an upfront fee.

Charity News

The Manchester-born charity, Just Helping, is once again gearing up for its 2025 Christmas Tree Collection. A campaign that combines environmental sustainability with community spirit. Launched in 2012, the initiative has grown from a local effort into a nationwide campaign raising £5.6 million for charities across the UK. Helping residents recycle their real Christmas trees while raising vital funds for charities.

In 2024, the Manchester collection raised an incredible £94,861.86 for St Ann’s Hospice, Francis House Children’s Hospice, WeloveMCR, and other Greater Manchester charities. Whilst preventing 82,112 kg of CO2 emissions being released, this event is a true win for both the community and the environment.

This volunteer-led event thrives thanks to the incredible support from our community! Whether you register a tree and spread the word, sponsor a van or provide one, share on social media, help out with some flyering, or even on event day! Any help is appreciated and goes a long way!

As we grow, we rely more than ever on your help! Volunteering is a fun, rewarding way to give back locally. The collection runs from Thursday 9th Jan to Sunday 12th, 2025, and we would love to have your involvement, or better yet, see you there.

Residents can register their trees online for a small donation, and during the 9th12th January, local volunteers will collect your tree from outside your door! The trees are then chipped and recycled to benefit local parks and green spaces.

This effort doesn’t just support the environment but also provides much-needed funds to local charities that offer essential care and support to patients and families. By participating, you contribute to both the environment and the local community!

How can you help?

With projections of our biggest year yet, we need your help!

For more information and to get involved: Check out our website: www.just-helping.org.uk

ELEVATE YOUR DINING ROOM

Our dining rooms can be a place where we gather daily to catch up and spend much loved family time, or maybe you’re more the ‘running around between kids clubs with dinner in the car’ vibe. Time around the dining table is treasured, especially at Christmas and other family or friend events. I’m going to touch on a few ways to transform this area to make your memories extra special. Wallpaper has come back with a bang, don’t be afraid to daringly inject some colour. Here a strong blue, pretty wallpaper forms the backdrop for the fabulous lines of the furniture and accessories. Plain curtains are perfect to allow the wallpaper to really work. We have oval or curved lines for the dining table, chairs and mirror, which also brings out the shapes of the beautifully lined up candles. The light carries on this theme and ties in with the mid-century feel of the furniture. The light and mirror are kept low accentuating the beautiful height of the room, again showing off the wallpaper.

and the glass table allows us to view the entire space, giving an illusion of space –check out the monkey wall light!

This long thin dining room works so well with the banquette seating. This is a fab trick for smaller spaces. Nothing is taken away from this room due to its size, we have an amazing tropical mural wrapping around against the eclectic, bright blue, softly shaped banquette seating. The straw light perfectly ties in with the mural

Colour and fun! One of my favourite styles. Sunny yellow chairs and bright artwork has invited happiness to this space. Done correctly this looks like an artistic hotel, a place featured in ‘cool places to visit’ blogs, yet it’s simple finish – plain white walls, no window treatment – is the key to this look. Don’t worry if you have neighbours you don’t want to look at, a lovely plain blind or curtain would work well.

A lot that

completes this is about the use of different carver chairs and placement of art. It makes me happy.

S.T.N.A.

We’re like a secret organisation. Lots of people don’t even know about us and yet we’re a free service for the Visually Impaired in Stockport. And, every Wednesday, through the entire year volunteers pop in to Walthew House in Shaw Heath, to the little recording studio,

This is where local people are interviewed for the audio magazine: pickle ball champion, mural maker, orchestra conductor, footballer – the variety is huge. What’s on in Stockport, a guide to local pubs, crosswords, historical items, book reviews.

Wednesday evening is studio time. Four volunteers sneak in the side door and take their seats by a microphone. The recording engineer gives the thumbs up and off they go – a weekly hour’s worth of local news.

All the recordings are transferred to a

memory stick, copies are made and the mail team sort everything into yellow wallets. The rest is up to the Royal Mail.

Over a hundred visually impaired listeners get three hours’ worth of information and entertainment – FREE. But we’d love to have more listeners and you could help.

If you know someone, of any age, who’s visually impaired and they live in Stockport and you think they’d like our service, please, tell them about us.

They’ll get an mp3 player and a weekly memory stick – AND IT’S ALL FREE.

We’ve been going since the 1970s and we want to reach out and expand. If you can, please help. We have a website and a Facebook page and Walthew House can pass on any messages.

Lamb & Autumn Vegetables

This is the best time of year to enjoy relaxed Sundays with the family where things just come together without too much effort.

Slow cooked leg of lamb with Autumn vegetables.

Serves 8

8 cloves of garlic plus a head of garlice all cloves peeled but left whole.

Sea salt and freshly ground pepper

Large pinch of saffron

8 thyme sprigns – leaves picked

8 tbsps extra virgin olive oil

2kg leg of lamb

1 large onion cut into wedges

300g slim carrots or normal carrots cut into quarters lengthways.

500g waxy potatoes scrubbed and sliced

400ml amontillado sherry

Preheat the oven to 220c

Make a paste by crushing the 8 cloves of garlic with the salt flakes in a pestle and mortar. Then grind in the saffron, the thyme leaves, pepper and olive oil to give a loose paste.

Stab the lamb all over then rub the paste mix all over the lamb pushing the paste into the incisions. Put it into a large roasting tin giving room for the vegetables to go in later. Season all over.

Roast for 20 minutes then remove from the oven and reduce the oven temp to 160c. Put the vegetables and the rest of the garlic in and around the lamb. In a small pan bring the sherry to just under a boil and then pour it over. Cover with a double layer of foil (or lid) and return to the oven. Cook it for / hours turning it over about 3 times and checking it’s not drying out. (More sherry if it looks too dry – if it looks too wet leave the foil/lid off for the last 45mins so the juices can reduce)

The lamb should be cooked to softness if not cook for longer. Serve with the vegetables surrounding the meat.

Enjoy.

Mindset Advice

UNDERSTANDING BURNOUT: CAUSES,

SYMPTOMS, AND HOW TO OVERCOME IT

Burnout is a term that is often heard but perhaps not so often understood. In today’s fast paced and high pressure world, where mental health challenges are on this rise, it is worth a closer look.

It is effectively a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged exposure to stress. It can affect anyone, from high level executives to stay-at-home parents. If left unchecked, burnout can lead to a decrease in productivity, health problems, and a general feeling of hopelessness.

What Causes Burnout?

Burnout can develop over time due to a variety of factors. One of the main contributors is workplace pressure. Jobs that involve high levels of responsibility, long hours, and a lack of control over outcomes can contribute significantly. This sense of relentless pressure with no end in sight can cause overwhelm and make it hard to keep going.

However, burnout isn’t just work-related. Personal life stressors also play a role. Caring for a family member, managing a household, or dealing with financial issues can all contribute. When we add in the poor work-life balance that is so common, it becomes even more challenging to manage stress. The lack of time for relaxation, social interaction, and self-care can quickly lead to exhaustion.

Finally, unrealistic expectations, either from others or self-imposed, can exacerbate stress. When we feel like we’re constantly falling short, no matter how hard we try, it becomes easy to spiral into burnout.

How to Recognise Burnout

Recognising burnout early is crucial to preventing it from escalating. Some common emotional signs include feelings of detachment, irritability, and an overall lack of motivation or enthusiasm. You might start dreading the day ahead, even when it includes things you once enjoyed.

Physically, chronic fatigue is one of the most common symptoms. No matter how much sleep you get, you may still feel tired. This can be

accompanied by headaches, muscle tension, or digestive issues, which are often linked to stress. Mentally, burnout can express as difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, and a general sense of overwhelm. If you find yourself snapping at others or feeling uncharacteristically cynical, burnout could be the reason.

What Can We Do About It?

The good news is that burnout can be prevented with the right strategies.

1. Seek Professional Help: If burnout is affecting your quality of life, it’s important to talk to a healthcare professional. A therapist or coach can help you understand the root causes and develop coping strategies.

2. Practice Self-Care: Regular self-care is essential for managing stress. This might include daily exercise, maintaining a balanced diet, and ensuring you get enough sleep. Additionally, incorporating relaxation techniques like mindfulness or meditation can really help.

3. Set Boundaries: In both work and personal life. Learn to say no when you’re overwhelmed and prioritise your well-being. It’s not selfish; it’s essential.

4. Adjust Expectations: We often hold ourselves to impossibly high standards. Try to adjust your expectations and allow yourself to be imperfect. Remember, progress is more important than perfection.

Burnout may be a common experience in today’s world, but it’s not inevitable. By understanding the causes, recognising the symptoms early, and implementing practical solutions, we can take control of our well-being and prevent burnout from taking over our lives.

CHANGES TO THE WINTER FUEL PAYMENT

There has been a lot in the press recently about the decision to remove the automatic Winter Fuel Payment. The Government have confirmed that people over 65 who receive qualifying benefits will be eligible for the Warm Home Discount. This is a £150 discount off your electricity bill, and it is paid directly to your electricity supplier. Your energy supplier must be part of the scheme for you to receive the discount, you can check online to see who is taking part. To receive the Winter Home Discount, you need to qualify which means for older people you receive Pension Credit. The Pension Credit gives you extra money to help with your living costs if you’re over State Pension age and on a low income. Pension Credit can also help with housing costs such as ground rent or service charges. Visit www.gov.uk to see if you qualify. Should you be eligible for the Warm Home Discount you should receive the discount by 31st March 2025.

herd. When footage was shown to Terrie and Dave, they confirmed it was Diesel, who looked healthy and happy with his adopted family. Mrs Drewry said it was such a relief to know what happened and that “He’s living his best life.”, she continued “To catch him would be next to impossible, he is truly a wild burro now. Out there doing what he’s raised to do.”

These two different animals have learned to get along and live happily together. There are obvious differences but what they have in common is that they are herd animals meaning they need companions. The elks have completely accepted Diesel the donkey and welcomed him into their family. The acceptance of someone into a group means beginning to think of them as part of the group and to act in a friendly way towards them. It is unconditionally and wholeheartedly letting someone be exactly who they are, just like Diesel he’s still a donkey living amongst the elks but has been accepted and fits right in.

The story begins 5 years ago in California when a couple, Terrie and Dave Drewry lost their donkey, named Diesel, during a hike after he was frightened by a mountain lion. The couple searched in vain for Diesel and enlisted volunteers to help find him. The last footage of Diesel was a few months later when he was spotted on a trail camera, after that there were no other sightings. “We finally kind of gave up,” Mrs Drewry told BBC’s news partner, CBS. “Just no signs of him.” They were resigned to never knowing what happened, that is until a hiker, Max Fennell, made an interesting discovery 5 years after Deisel went missing.

Max was out on a hike, only a few miles from where Diesel went missing when he spotted a herd of Elks, what was unusual that there was a donkey running with the elks as part of the

The importance of feeling accepted cannot be overstated. When we feel accepted, we are more likely to have positive self-esteem and selfworth. It often leads to a sense of confidence and security in ourselves, and we are less likely to seek validation from external sources.

The story of Diesel and the elks is a lovely life lesson for us all.

PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF PILATES FOR LONGEVITY

The definition of longevity is living a long and healthier life. Longevity may seem beyond our control, but adopting some healthy habits may lead us to a ripe, old age. Whilst there are no quick fixes or short cuts to living longer and healthier lives, the science is clear on the key principles of eating a healthy plant based diet, exercising, getting enough sleep and reducing stress.

While it may seem counterintuitive that a lowimpact exercise like Pilates could have such a significant impact on lifespan, numerous studies have indicated Pilates can enhance both physical and mental health, leading to a healthier life.

improve cognitive function and memory in older adults, helping to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

By improving both physical and mental health, Pilates can help individuals to lead longer and healthier lives. However, to see these benefits, it’s important to practice Pilates regularly and consistently.

If you’re interested in incorporating Pilates into your exercise routine, there are a few tips to keep in mind:

Start slow: If you’re new to Pilates, start with a beginner’s class or a few private sessions to learn the basics. It’s important to build a strong foundation before moving on to more advanced exercises.

Physical Benefits of Pilates for Longevity

Pilates can improve balance and prevent falls in older adults. As we age, our bodies naturally lose muscle mass and strength, leading to a higher risk of falls and injuries. However, by incorporating Pilates into your exercise routine, we can improve our balance, stability, and coordination, reducing the risk of falls and increasing overall quality of life.

Pilates has been shown to improve overall physical fitness, including strength, flexibility, and range of motion. By working the body’s abdominal muscles, Pilates can help to improve posture, reduce back pain, and increase overall physical function. This improvement in physical fitness can help you to maintain your independence and quality of life well into your later years.

Mental Benefits of Pilates for Longevity

Pilates can help to reduce stress and improve overall mental health. Pilates has been shown to

Be consistent: To see the benefits of Pilates, it’s important to practice regularly.

Listen to your body: While Pilates can be a lowimpact form of exercise, it’s still important to listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself too hard.

Pilates is a great opportunity for you to meet new people, socialize, enjoy yourself and realign your future health.
