Welcome to the October/November issue of SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle.
As I write this column it feels like the middle of Winter! But we are promised warmer weather again, so the heating is still off!
Kevin Pratt is back this month with some great tips on the plants he uses when designing a garden. Read more on page 16.
Financial Matters this month covers the important topic of retirement; specially saving tax whilst saving for your retirement. See page 18 for more.
If you are an ABBA fan (who isn’t!), then why not book tickets to the Tribute Night which is being organised in support of Prevent Breast Cancer, see page 12 for details.
Whilst we do our best to print all the local events, we sometimes receive them too late to print. So why not follow us on Instagram @skmagazines and keep up to date after the magazines are out.
If you are planning an event and would like us to spread the word, please do not hesitate to drop me an e-mail with the details. I have now got a handy form you can complete.
See you next time.

Discreet Teeth Straightening Using Clear Aligners at Cheadle Hulme Dental
Clear aligner teeth straightening systems work on the basis that small changes are made to the structure of the aligners every few weeks in order to shift the patient’s teeth, and move them to their final position over time. They are practical because they can be removed for cleaning and are discreet because they are clear. If you don’t want the traditional wires and brackets to straighten your teeth and would prefer an almost invisible option, then this is definitely the treatment for you.
See the amazing results that can be achieved using clear aligner systems in these before and after pictures from cases we have completed recently. The results speak for themselves.
With our current clear aligners offer, you can save up to £2410 on this fantastic treatment, meaning there is no better time to get the straight smile of your dreams. Contact our friendly team on 0161-486-0743 to book in for this fantastic offer, or if you require any further information. Alternatively, scan the QR code on our advert to be taken straight to the booking page.
Autumn is drawing in and although the sun may still be shining during the day we have colder nights and colder damp mornings. Plants feel the season changing too - they have a cellular switch that calls into action a metabolic change – and the end result is the autumn leaf colours we all enjoy.
As a garden designer we are often asked what are our favourite seasonal plants, and this is my second chance to share with you my most reliable plants for the garden. Last month we covered summer favourites and here we look at autumn and winter. Gardeners love Acers for their autumn leaves, but I always feel that after three glorious weeks the leaves are left as a carpet on the floor! I always prefer Parrotia persica, (The Persian Ironwood) not widely known by gardeners but actually widely available in garden centres. A plant which has exceptional autumn colour from September to December and a plant where the leaves stay on the plant. There are dwarf cultivars like Persian Spire that will take 10 years to reach 2m and there are much bigger cultivars like Vanessa which turn bronze, red and pink. Both can be pruned to a desirable height but the key factor here is that the leaves stay on the shrub - no soggy mounds of fallen leaves to deal with!
prune it in winter to keep it to a desired height. Liquidamber leaves resembles an Acer, but it out performs the Acer with spectacular scarlet red leaves that sticks to the plant. Do a quick Google search on Liquidambar and you’ll see just how beautiful this plant is. Strategically placed in the garden this shrub or tree will add autumn colour to any garden – big or small.
Finally, I need to celebrate a winter flowering shrub of monumental proportions.
Hamamelis ( witch hazel) flowers from December to February, and it’s a plant which no garden should be without.
When I started out in gardening, we only had yellow Hamamelis but now there are scores of cultivars in red, bronze, orange, pink and the usual yellow. Pop down to your garden centre in November to see the range of witch hazels. They are very easy to grow in any soil just sadly very slow, often taking 10 years to reach 2m.
When I look at any design, always try to find space for these three essential autumn and winter plants.
Happy Gardening!
Another plant that’s often sold as a tree is Liquidambar styraciflua. But we gardeners know that if we buy a smaller plant, we can

SAVING TAX WHILE SAVING FOR RETIREMENT
Deciding whether to save into a pension is a significant financial decision with long-term implications. However, there are generous tax reliefs for pension savings to encourage us to put something away for our old age. This article will outline the main ways that pension savings can reduce your tax bill.
Most people have a workplace pension. There are two ways that workplace pensions offer tax relief, and this depends on the pension scheme’s rules. With a net pay scheme, your employee contributions are deducted from your salary, and you only pay tax on your earnings less your employee contributions. This will save you tax at 20% if you are a basic rate taxpayer; 40% if you are a higher rate taxpayer and 45% if you are an additional rate taxpayer. The tax relief is automatically claimed when the payroll is processed and so there is nothing that you need to do.
Unfortunately, if your earnings are less than the personal allowance, you won’t save any tax on your pension contributions under a net pay scheme. In this case, the second scheme would work better for you. With a relief at source pension scheme, the pension provider automatically claims an additional 20% from the government and adds this to the amount which you contribute. So, if you make £80 of employee contributions, the pension scheme will claim £20 from the government and £100 will be added to your pension pot. As the tax relief claimed by the pension scheme is only 20%, if you are a higher rate or additional rate taxpayer, you can claim further tax relief on your employee pension contributions on your tax return. If you are unsure which pension scheme your employer operates, the payroll department should be able to tell you. If you are self-employed, then any personal pension contributions you make work in a similar way to a relief at source pension scheme. The pension provider claims an
additional 20% on any contributions you make and then, if applicable, you claim any further relief on your tax return.
There is a cap on how much you can contribute to your pension each year and still claim tax relief but it’s not straightforward. The annual allowance is £60,000 for 2024/2025 or 100% of your earnings if your income is less than £60,000. If you haven’t used your full annual allowance previously, it may be possible to use the annual allowance of the previous three years. Also, the annual allowance can be reduced in certain circumstances, for example if your earnings are over a certain level. There used to be a limit on the total amount that could be saved in your pension without incurring tax charges. This was abolished but there are rumours that the new government may reintroduce this.
If you have your own company, then your company can make pension contributions on your behalf. The pension contributions made by the company are a tax-deductible expense for the company and can save Corporation Tax at up to 26.5% of the contributions made. The amount contributed by the company counts towards the annual allowance and so there is a limit as to how much can be paid in by the company but generally, this is another good way to use pension contributions to save tax.
As always you ought to speak to your own accountant to better understand your own circumstances.

Charity News CHARITY GOLF DAY RAISES OVER £7,700 IN MEMORY OF LOCAL HERO
A charity golf day organized by Mike Hickman in memory of his late father Rick, has successfully raised over £7,700 for The Christie Hospital, marking a heartfelt tribute and a meaningful contribution to the fight against cancer. Mike, from Cheadle Hulme, arranged the event in honour of his father Rick, who tragically passed away suddenly in November last year after a brain aneurysm at the age of 58. The charity golf day, held at Bramhall Golf Club on Friday 9th August, drew participants from across the community, including family, friends, club members and supporters, all coming together to celebrate the life of Mike’s father and raise funds for a cause that is close to their hearts.
Mike chose Bramhall Golf Club as the venue for the charity event because his father had been a dedicated member there for 38 years. His grandfather Tony was a Past Captain in 1988, making it a place filled with cherished memories, so it seemed like the perfect location to celebrate Rick’s life and legacy, surrounded by the community that had become like a second family.
The event featured a full day of golf, a raffle and auction, with prizes generously donated by friends & local businesses. Participants enjoyed perfect weather and the beautiful course, but the real highlight of the day was the overwhelming support and unity displayed by everyone there.
In a statement, Mike expressed his gratitude: “This day was about more than just golf. It was a way to honour my dad’s memory and give back to a hospital that does incredible work every day. I’m overwhelmed by the support we’ve received, and I know my dad would be proud.”
The funds raised will be donated to The Christie Hospital, who are dedicated to cancer treatment and research. The hospital has been at the forefront of providing exceptional care and support to patients and their families, making the donation a significant contribution to its ongoing efforts.
Mike plans to make the ‘Rick Hickman Charity Golf Day’ an annual event, continuing to raise awareness and funds in memory of his father. A date for 2025 will be released shortly.

BEDROOM DESIGNING TIPS
Designing a room can be daunting, but following a few careful steps can help break it down and help the final look be more cohesive. Try not to think of what you already have, unless you are happy to bring a room together around items that are similar in design.
Here I’m showcasing images from one of my suppliers that specialise in a whimsical, relaxed look reminiscent of visits to, perhaps, a French village, or it can be adapted to a simple Scandi vibe.
The feel here is one of relaxation, perfect for a bedroom.
Materials are natural with lots of wood, touches of iron and plenty of layered fabrics in neutral tones. This scheme would suit natural timbers, wicker, raffia, cotton and linen. Layer up your bedding with tones of the earth.
Walls can be painted in dark or light earthy tones, from terracottas to whites. The darker the walls, the warmer and more cosy it will feel. Always ensure there’s a balance of colours, if using dark accents, to showcase them against a lighter background, be it the floor, furniture or walls.
Soft lighting and mirrors can be used to great effect in bedrooms. The ‘big light’ for tasks
(we all need to vacuum sometimes), then side lights on a dimmer for a lovely soft glow before lights out, or brighter for reading. Mirrors can be used as another source of light if positioned to reflect your light source.
Finally, accessories are super important to get right. Keep in mind the look you want to achieve to keep on track. Say you have some lovely candlesticks, you can probably reuse these from another room, they may need to be whitewashed or sanded back to a lighter finish, but adding the same earthy toned candles
will finish the look off. Add in some faux foliage and gather in groups and varying heights.
For tips and tricks, follow me on Instagram. For more practical help, please do get in touch. Sharon.

Ancient treasure on your Cheshire sideboard?
Sideboards and glass cabinets are often home to antique treasures but their owners are often blissfully unaware of a potential auction windfall.
I will give you a perfect example to inspire you ahead of my trip to Cheshire’s Ness Botanic Gardens in October to offer antique valuations. I was on a home visit assessing jewellery when I spied, on a sideboard, a shimmering bowl with a floral design.
That thrill-of-the-find excitement gripped me. I knew it was potentially ancient treasure. It was identified as a late 16th or early 17th century motherof-pearl IndoPortuguese dish of cultural significance.
Late 16th or early 17th century mother-of-pearl, Indo-Portuguese dish, est 10-15K
Somehow, it had made its way across the world and ended up at London’s Portobello market in the 1970s. The seller’s late husband purchased it there and the precious rarity spent decades on their sideboard.
Believed to have been crafted in Gujarat on the western coast of India, the dish is thought to be a rare survivor of wares popular with the wealthy elite and royalty during the days of the Portuguese Empire. It’s likely it was brought to the UK by a British merchant for a royal or noble household around 400 years ago. IndoPortuguese mother-of-pearl objects were brought to Europe by merchants from around 1525. Henry VIII was among royals who liked ornate wares ‘from the Indies’ and similar mother-of-pearl overlayed items can be seen at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.
Items like this were luxury objects then and now. They were deemed so exotic they were
gifted to royalty. And we have the Portuguese to thank because when their country’s empire was at its height, its people commissioned mother-of-pearl wares.
In 1498 Portuguese explorer
Vasco da Gama became the first European to reach India by sea and in 1505 Portuguese India was founded. Gujarat is first mentioned as the centre of mother-of-pearl work in 1502 when the King of Melinde, on the East Coast of Africa, presented da Gama with a gold and mother-of-pearl bedstead.
Such is the desirability of Indian and Asian artefacts, the 26cm diameter dish could make £10,000-£15,000 in Hansons’ September 26-27 Fine Art
Auction. Further entries invited.
Charles Hanson will offer free valuations at Ness Botanic Gardens, Cheshire, CH64 4AY, on October 22, 11am-1pm. Free valuations of jewellery and watches will be available at Lost and Found Knutsford, Old Town Hall, Princess Street, Knutsford, WA16 6BY, on November 1, 10amnoon. WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BOUNCE BACK LOANS
Bounce Back Loans and their bigger brother CBILs loans were very popular a few years ago. They gave businesses much needed liquidity when their trade was knocked by the lock downs. Bounce back loans came with a 12 month repayment and interest holiday followed by 5 years of monthly repayments with a low interest rate. We are now in the middle of the boring bit – the repayments.
When the loans were taken out there were precise conditions about the amount to be borrowed and what the money could be used for. The speed the loans were given out meant that the banks were often unable to carry out thorough checks before the money was lent.
In other words the conditions were self certified i.e. the borrower confirmed they had met the criteria.
If you continue to pay off your loan month by month is gets smaller and all is right with the world.
What happens if you can’t pay? In that case the bank will first try to enforce the loan from the company. If there is nothing left in the company then the bank will ask the government for the
outstanding balance. These loans had no director personal guarantees they were government guaranteed.
Within this process the powers that be will look very carefully at whether the loan was correctly take out in the first place. There were a number of conditions for the loans but perhaps the most common violations are:
n Loans were taken out that were larger than allowed by the rules.
n Loans were used to support the directors’ life styles not to support the business bouncing back.
What to do? If you got carried away and have taken out a loan incorrectly you need to seek advice about what to do. If you cannot pay back a loan you need specific insolvency advice.
If you need to talk to someone about tax, accounting and finance more generally then please give us a call. We offer a free initial meeting and that may well be all you need. If you want continuing advice we offer agreed in advance fees so you know where you stand. I look forward to hearing from you.

Autumn 2024 Recipe
Chicken thighs with a corn crust.
This is a lovely dish from an Ottolenghi book I have – very casual and easy to make. I may seem like a lot of ingredients but it is really just about bunging it all together. I is quite spicy which makes it ideal for an Autumn evening in my view.
Serves six
3tbsp olive oil
3 red onions (thinly sliced)
2 garlic cloves (crushed)
4 tbsp rose harissa
Add the peppers and chocolate and simmer again for 30 minutes uncovered and stirring frequently until the sauce is nice and thick. Add the coriander and spoon into a baking dish with high sides. Pre- heat the oven to 180c
Sweetcorn Batter
70g unsalted butter (melted)
500g corn kernels (I just use frozen defrosted)
3 tbsp whole milk
3 eggs (whites and yolks separated)
2tsp sweet smoked paprika
850g skinless and boneless chicken thighs
200ml passata
5 large tomatoes (quartered)
200g jarred roasted red peppers (drained and sliced)
15g dark chocolate
20g coriander (chopped)
Salt and pepper to taste.
In a large lidded saute pan fry the onions in the oil at high for about 10 mins until nicely soft and brown. Reduce the heat and add the garlic, harissa, paprika and chicken. Add one teaspoon of salt and a good grind of pepper. Cook for 5 minutes stirring and then add the passata and tomatoes. Pour over 350ml of water, cover then simmer for 30 minutes stirring every now and then.
Put the butter, corn, milk, egg yolks and a bit of salt into a blender and blitz for a few seconds to form a rough batter then spoon into a large bowl. In another bowl whisk the egg whites until they are stiff and then gently fold them into the corn mixture retaining as much air as you can. Pour over the chicken evenly and then bake for 35 minutes until the top is golden. Keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t over brown. If it looks like it is put some foil over it for the last 10 minutes or so. Leave is to stand for 10 minutes before serving.
DONKEY AND THE ELKS
There is a wonderful film circulating on social media and has featured on the news. If you haven’t already seen the video, then I would strongly urge you to search ‘donkey and the elks’ and take a look. It is a heart-warming story, I would liken it to a fable as it has a moral lesson, one of acceptance.
The story begins 5 years ago in California when a couple, Terrie and Dave Drewry lost their donkey, named Diesel, during a hike after he was frightened by a mountain lion. The couple searched in vain for Diesel and enlisted volunteers to help find him. The last footage of Diesel was a few months later when he was spotted on a trail camera, after that there were no other sightings. “We finally kind of gave up,” Mrs Drewry told BBC’s news partner, CBS. “Just no signs of him.” They were resigned to never knowing what happened, that is until a hiker, Max Fennell, made an interesting discovery 5 years after Deisel went missing.
These two different animals have learned to get along and live happily together. There are obvious differences but what they have in common is that they are herd animals meaning they need companions. The elks have completely accepted Diesel the donkey and welcomed him into their family. The acceptance of someone into a group means beginning to think of them as part of the group and to act in a friendly way towards them. It is unconditionally and wholeheartedly letting someone be exactly who they are, just like Diesel he’s still a donkey living amongst the elks but has been accepted and fits right in.
The importance of feeling accepted cannot be overstated. When we feel accepted, we are more likely to have positive self-esteem and selfworth. It often leads to a sense of confidence and security in ourselves, and we are less likely to seek validation from external sources.
Max was out on a hike, only a few miles from where Diesel went missing when he spotted a herd of Elks, what was unusual that there was a donkey running with the elks as part of the herd. When footage was shown to Terrie and Dave, they confirmed it was Diesel, who looked healthy and happy with his adopted family. Mrs Drewry said it was such a relief to know what happened and that “He’s living his best life.”, she continued “To catch him would be next to impossible, he is truly a wild burro now. Out there doing what he’s raised to do.”
The story of Diesel and the elks is a lovely life lesson for us all.

Mindset Advice
THE IMPORTANCE OF CHOOSING AUTHENTICITY OVER ATTACHMENT
What Is Attachment?
Attachment can be defined as the tendency for humans and other mammals to form attachments. Attachments are critical to survival and we seek attachment from birth, particularly to the mother, so it is a primal, not conscious behaviour.
We can see the importance of attachment by looking at primates. Infants who do not achieve attachment to the mother are often “removed from the gene pool” and a failure to form attachments in later life can mean rejection from social groups, likely to lead to death.
What Is Authenticity?
Authenticity can be summarised as being true to yourself in who you are, what you think, and how you act. Achieving it requires a thorough understanding of oneself and a high degree of self confidence.
Being authentic is difficult; firstly, because many people don’t even know what their authentic self is, and secondly, because even if people do, the decision to be true to one’s self comes at a cost.
Why Might We Choose Attachment?
As we know, attachment is critical to our survival, and survival behaviours are mostly governed by the limbic brain (A.K.A the “Chimp Brain”) which evolved millions of years ago and is very powerful.
Authenticity was only enabled by the arrival of consciousness, through the evolution of the Neo Cortex in humans, occurring in the last 75,000 years, and is not clearly linked to survival. The Neo Cortex often loses out to the survival instincts of the limbic brain.
No other animal has this conflict, having instincts, but being able to choose whether to observe them, and ultimately whether to be authentic. The conflict is complex because the cost of authenticity, which we desire, is often attachment, which we instinctively need.
I’ve seen many cases where people have chosen attachment over authenticity for their entire lives. Perhaps they had volatile caregivers, and it was safer to appease or please them than to express their true thoughts and feelings. It can then become a deeply engrained habit to keep others happy and ignore one’s own feelings.
How Might This Backfire?
Whilst prioritising attachment may seem the easiest in the short term, it is very stressful to the nervous system. It starts as frustration, then possibly anger, sadness, fear or hopelessness may follow - all usually repressed.
Any repressed emotion will emerge eventually; maybe as anxiety, depression, insomnia or even chronic pain or fatigue.
Ultimately, the body keeps the score and it will let us know once it’s had enough.
It is difficult to be authentic, because not everyone will like your authentic self, which is stressful, and can feel unsafe, which is why humans avoid it.
But the courage to face up to short-lived clashes or confrontation is worth it, because we affirm ourselves each time we do. We connect to ourselves and learn what we like and dislike and what we will and won’t tolerate (think boundaries…)
For homework, I want you to consider the relationships in your life. Do you always avoid conflict and disagreement? Do you hide your true feelings? Are you a “people pleaser”? Are you afraid to say “no” to people?
If you said “no” to all of the above, then you’re probably okay and fairly connected to your authentic self. If you said “yes” mostly, then I want you to think about the following:
Could you be losing yourself to maintain possibly unhealthy relationships? If you can’t be yourself around someone, are you okay with that? How could you connect to yourself more and learn to express your true feelings?
Use your answers to make a strategy to enable you to choose authenticity over attachment more in your life, and this will lead to better physical and mental health and happiness. It really is worth it.

June saw the Captain’s events here at Bramhall Golf Club with the Lady Captain, Jo Lingwoods, Day taking place on Thursday 13th June and the Men’s Captain Mr Jon Pacey showcasing a 36-hole two day event taking place over Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June. The Course has been in exceptional condition for the events this year with the newly appointed Course Manager Ian Kirwan showing off his skills for presentation. More to follow about Ian in the coming weeks and months.
Lady Captain said that she had a fantastic day with the event running superbly. Following the golf the Ladies, who know how to party had a fantastic evening of food and dancing. With Lady Captain treating the ladies to a magical evening with a show from table magician Jack Mabon. The overall winner was Mrs Sarah Jane Moore with a brilliant level par net score of 73 just edging out Kath Kirwan, Vicky Clewley, Joanne Kinney and Leanne Rudd who all finished with a 75.
The inaugural chipping competition took place on Friday evening before Mr Captains weekend to raise money for Mr Captains nominated charity the MS Society. Mr Captain kindly laid on some nibbles for those who attended.
Saturdays competitors were treated to some fabulous weather and some tasty pin positions on day 1.
The lead after day 1 was held by the clubs Finance Chairman Blair Marriott who carded a fantastic opening round net 64, 2 shots ahead of Martin Hodgkinson and Colin Carter on 66. As day two ebbed and flowed the lead was commanded by David Crawford who was building on a 68 first round score and carded a very impressive 2 over par for the front nine of day 2 (net 6 under). Heading into the back 9 it was Davids’s competition to lose. Despite a very nervous 7 at the last par 4 which included a visit to the out of bounds and the creak at the
back of the green, David managed a miraculous up and down to get over the line and win the Weekend with a very impressive net 6 under par for the 2 rounds, just ahead of our
first round leader Blair Marriott and Steve Rosier who both finished on 3 under.
The balcony was packed for the Presentation with the speech and the prize giving taking place in the setting sun on the first tee.
Mr Captain quoted that the weekend was the best fun he had had at the golf club, and he hadn’t even hit a ball. What a host he was.
The following week Mr Captains evening event was held where the attendees were treated to some great food and a performance from the New West End Jersey Boys. A great evening was had by all.
July saw the turn of our President Mr Mike Jones. With the Presidents weekend held on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th.
Mr Presidents event which is by tradition a Stableford event was fortunate again to be played in some great weather. Once again, a chipping competition was held for the Captains Charity with Mr President laying on some nibbles for the attendees.
The event was hotly contested on day one with 1 point separating the leader Max Murphy on 41 points from 6 other competitors on 40 points. The overall winner was Paul Rigby who carded 39 points the first day and 38 points on day 2 for a total of 77 points. A fantastic weekend well done Paul, just edging out Andy Southern and David Nortier on 75 points.
Mr President and his guests enjoyed an evening of Food and Dancing on the Saturday evening so undoubtedly there were some tender golfers for the Sunday.
A fantastic year of events laid on by our club dignitaries. Thank you, Mr President, Mr Captain and Mrs Lady Captain, for all your hospitality throughout.

WALKING HAS SO MANY BENEFITS!
I’ve always loved walking and one of the positives of our whole Covid experience was that many others fell in love with it too.
Walking as a form of exercise is so easily accessible for people of all ages and fitness levels. The more regularly you do it, the easier it gets. It can be done at the drop of a hat – just exit your front door and head off or you can enjoy researching beautiful places to visit and plan routes to explore and enjoy.
Over the years I have visited many places and the whole experience of being outdoors and walking in nature has been so rewarding, mentally and physically. The serene repetition of nature makes walking a very mindful experience and you get the benefits of sunshine helping your body produce vitamins which are so important for our bones and tissues. The rhythm of walking creates a good workout for our muscles and improves our balance. You can walk fast or slow, uphill or downhill and experience the firmness of pavements or softness of the ground in fields. Our respiratory and cardiovascular systems both get a good workout.
I generally walk in a very good pair of trainers if doing roads or paths but also have a good pair of walking boots/shoes. Both are an investment, keeping your feet comfortable and blister free.
It is always important to check the weather when you are due to walk so you have the correct clothing to walk in. It is also important when doing longer/ more demanding walks or just new walks, to have a map or walking guide book and a phone with you just in case any unexpected incidents happen. Walking poles can also be very helpful both for the fit and unfit to help keep you balanced when walking.
Anyway, please do try and get out and enjoy the amazing places we have on our doorstep or plan some walking adventures over the later summer and autumn.
You can also walk alone and contemplate or in family or friendship groups and have a social experience. If you live on your own or don’t have anyone to walk with,
The Ramblers Association run all sorts of walks graded in level and length and are very welcoming to all. Locally you will also find many walking groups.
A walk in the morning before work, at lunchtime or after work can break up the demands of sitting all day and also helps clear your mind.
As always keep a balance to your exercise routine – yoga, pilates and gym can help keep you fit and strong all round too. If you have a mechanical issue to sort out before you start or that crops up as you get going, an Osteopath will always be happy to give you treatment and advice.

MAKE TIME TO JOIN A PILATES CLASS!
The children are back at school so whether you are a parent or grandparent take some welldeserved ME time. With more time on your hands now is the time to join a Pilates class. It’s well known that physically active can lead to a healthier and happier life.
Pilates is a great form of exercise and after a few sessions you will start to feel the benefits of regular exercise.
However, before you join your first class here are a few things you need to know.
Focus on Quality over Quantity
Pilates isn’t about speed or lots of reps. It’s about precise movements, proper form, and engaging your core with every exercise. This can be surprisingly challenging but ultimately leads to better results and a lower risk of injury. It’s all about the breath
Breath plays a crucial role in Pilates. Proper breathing techniques help activate your core muscles, improve oxygen flow, and enhance your focus. Your teacher will guide you on breath control throughout the class, so pay attention and breathe deeply.
Listen to your body
Don’t push yourself beyond your limits. Pilates is a progressive exercise program, so it’s natural to feel challenged but not overwhelmed. If you experience any pain, stop the exercise and let your teacher know. They can offer modifications or suggest alternative exercises.
Body Awareness
Pilates will make you hyper-aware of your body’s alignment and movement patterns. You might discover imbalances or weaknesses you weren’t aware of before. Embrace this awareness; it’s the first step to correcting these issues and improving your overall movement. Give it time to see results
Like any new exercise routine, consistency is key with Pilates. Don’t expect drastic changes overnight. Be patient, attend your classes regularly, and gradually, you’ll notice improvements in your strength, flexibility, posture, and overall well-being.
Be open to modifications
If you have any injuries or limitations, don’t hesitate to speak with your teacher beforehand. They can modify exercises to ensure you can participate safely and effectively.
What Pilates classes are there?
Pilates Matwork Classes
The most popular form of Pilates is matwork. Matwork is a more traditional form of Pilates, which as it has been developed has incorporated the use of equipment such as balls, stretch bands, foam rollers or magic circles.
High Intensity Power Pilates
HIP Pilates is a more dynamic form of Pilates that combines the precision and focus of a traditional Pilates session with the dynamic energy of a high intensity workout.
Combining core strength, balance and coordination with an energetic cardiovascular element HIP Pilates is the answer to many people’s search for a functional ‘feel good’ workout.
One-to-One Pilates Classes
Concerned about being the new student? Then a one-to-one class can be a good way to start. Both the session format and the exercises given are tailored to suit your needs and objectives. These sessions allow for greater progression and development and are a must for anyone requiring that individual attention.
Pilates is for life and can be life changing, so make sure you take some me-time and join a Body Control Pilates class now!
