Welcome to Wilmslow & Alderley Edge Welcome to the November / December issue of SK Wilmslow & Alderley Edge. I know, where has the year gone. inter is a wonderful time to create warm quilted projects. If you’re new to quilting, you’ll find the Twisted Pole Table Runner is an easy but effective project to make. Set around the Maypole festivities and goes by other names, Ribbon Pole and Ribbon Dance. It’s an age-old popular design and I think you’ll love it.
A pack of Fat Quarters will be great for a slightly smaller
first marking a diagonal across the middle to help you, then cut the squares on the diagonal. When you open up each sewn piece, you will have sewn a new square made up of 2 different coloured triangles; Sew all your new squares together, in the order as on your grid and you will have created a patchwork ribbon pole. Cut the border fabric into 2”/5cm strips, sew this all the way around your patchwork. Press this all down and you can sew this onto a wadding or even Thermofleece to make your table runner heat proof, ready to take hot casserole dishes fresh from the oven. Place your backing onto the runner, good sides together, sew all the way around the edges, leaving a 10cm turning hole. Use 1cm seam allowance. Once you have turned the runner through, top stitch all around the edge.
Cut your fabric into 4” Squares (10cm). You will need 36 in all.
You can watch a video tutorial on Abi’s Den YouTube channel.

CHARITY CHRISTMAS CARD SHOPS SET TO RE-OPEN FOR 2021
CELEBRATING ITS 50TH YEAR
T
he Combined Charities Christmas card shops will reopen this year with a big fanfare to celebrate 50 years of trading and raising over £5.5m during this time. The planned shops for 2020 had to be cancelled just 3 days before the official openings due to the UK being placed back into lockdown. Sheila Hallas MBE and her amazing group of volunteers were not to be deterred and the team plodded on making plans for 2021. Returning late October and early November, the 4 shops will have a large choice and variety of cards from all our charities that you can purchase from. The gifts and novelties range, which help pay for the shops’ costs, will also have lots to offer. This means that by selling the gifts, all cost associated with the shops are covered and every single penny from the sale of the Christmas cards goes straight back to the charity.
WING WALK
“It’s a great feeling to be back doing what we enjoy and helping others in the process” said Sheila, “following last year’s disappointment of not being able to open at the critical point when many charities were really struggling due to covid and needed all the help they could get, we are thrilled to be back. We do of course have covid safe protocols in place so customers and volunteers can be assured we are doing all we can to keep everyone safe.” The card shops have various opening dates from 30th October and will trade until early December at Wilmslow, Macclesfield, and Altrincham Libraries and at The Curzon Cinema in Knutsford. Please look at the website for exact opening dates and times and you’ll also find a good variety of cards to buy on the website. www.christmas-cards.org.uk
Due to the lack of funds raised last year as the shops were forced to remain closed, Sheila wanted to do something to make up for this. So in September she undertook a wing walk on the top of a 1940 biplane. Sheila reached dizzy heights and speeds of 140mph with bumps and rolls thrown in. To do this is amazing but to do this at almost 90 years of age is truly staggering. In the process Sheila has raised £5000 to be shared by the charities that sell cards in the shops. If you would like to donate to Sheila’s wing walk fund please do so on https://uk.gofundme.com/f/dn8hf-the-skys-the-limit

Pilates is a great way to stay fit this winter
uring the bleak winter months, it’s easy to let outdoor activities slide. Therefore, you need a fun indoor way of exercising that will ultimately help you achieve your goals. But before you jump into Pilates exercises, you might want to take a moment to gain a little insight into what Pilates is (and isn’t), and what makes it unique. Pilates really is a beginner-friendly fitness system. Indeed, the adaptability of Pilates exercises for different body types and fitness levels is one of its primary benefits. There are countless ways to modify and adapt Pilates exercises, depending on your age, weight, physical ability, and level of fitness. The exercises are designed with modifications so that people of all levels and abilities can stay safe while being physically challenged. If you’re wondering whether Pilates is right for you, it’s important to consider what it is you’re aiming to achieve. Strengthening your core can help alleviate pain and discomfort in the lower back while developing whole-body strength could improve your performance in another sport or physical activity. If you’re looking for a low-impact exercise that can promote overall health, weight loss, and weight management, Pilates may serve your needs. You’re bound to get stronger, improve your balance, and increase your awareness of your body and how it moves as a result. Pilates Matwork Classes The most popular form of Pilates is matwork. This more traditional form of Pilates has

developed to incorporated the use of equipment such as balls, stretch bands, foam rollers or magic circles. High Intensity Power Pilates HIP Pilates is a more dynamic form of Pilates that combines the precision and focus of a traditional Pilates session with the dynamic energy of a high intensity workout. Combining core strength, balance and coordination with an energetic cardiovascular element HIP Pilates is the answer to many people’s search for a functional ‘feel good’ workout. The class is fast paced, but importantly LOW impact. Therefore, you will increase your heart rate safely whilst burning fat and building lean muscle mass. The class also uses light hand weights, which improve bone health. Attending regular Pilates classes can help you develop good postural habits and a strong core. So, whether you choose an online or face to face class, Pilates is for life and can be life changing!

AVOIDING FALLS AT HOME
D
id you know that thirty percent of people aged 65 and over will fall at least once a year? And for those aged 80 and over it is 50 per cent? These startling statistics are reported by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence). However, there’s good news as there are simple things we can do to avoid falls at home and reduce the risk of injury and potential hospital stays. Here are some facts and tips to stay safe at home, especially important now as most falls occur when it becomes darker earlier in the evenings. Fall Facts n Over 60% of falls happen in the home. n Falls that result in hospital admission cost an average £5000 each time, weighing heavy on the NHS. n In the UK, falls are the most common cause of injury related deaths in people over the age of 75. n Ten per cent of hip-fracture patients will die within one month of their fracture, 30 per cent will die within a year and there are 13,800 hip-fracture-related deaths a year in the UK. n Falls can have an impact on confidence, increase isolation and reduce independence. What are some causes of falls? Sensory and balance problems The normal changes of aging such as poor eyesight, poor hearing. Illness and physical conditions can affect strength and balance. Also, loss of muscle, mobility and poor balance. Medication Medication can produce side effects which can alter balance and lead to falls. e.g. medications for high blood pressure, diabetes and heart conditions can cause unsteadiness. Falls are

more likely if you are taking four or more medicines. Home hazards Check for indoor hazards such as internal steps, rugs on the floor, slippery tiles in the bathroom. Make sure there’s adequate lighting between the bed and the bathroom and toilet at night. Wear suitable shoes that fit correctly, do not walk in socks. Don’t forget garden and outside hazards such as outside steps without handrails or are slippery, and uneven footpaths. Tips on how to prevent falls n Before getting out of bed, sit on the side for a moment before standing, allowing blood pressure to adjust to limit dizziness. n If there is a walking aid in place, use it e.g. a frame or walking stick. n Have handrails put on both sides of the stairways. n Grabrails are useful in the bathroom and entrances to the home. n Consider having a falls pendent alarm. n Do not put electrical cords across pathways. n Drinking enough fluids. n Take medication as prescribed. n Maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, exercise may prevent joint and muscle weakening.

Mindset Advice
CHALLENGING THE OPPORTUNITY COST OF SELF CARE You will no doubt have already noticed that I have declined to focus on Christmas or New Year in this final article of 2021. The reason for this is the fact that, when talking about self-care or any other type of beneficial lifestyle change, it shouldn’t really be in relation to any particular occasion at all. (Ideally, being healthier, fitter, stronger, living longer, and getting more out of life would be enough of a reason!) Now, to explain the title... As an economist originally, with a business background, I have always been fascinated with the concept of Opportunity Cost. Opportunity Cost is simply the benefit missed out on by diverting one’s energy to something else. So, for example, if I wanted to watch a movie on Friday night, the opportunity cost could be the kitchen being cleaned. The concept is subjective of course, as there is benefit to watching the movie (relaxation and fun) and benefit to cleaning the kitchen (the kitchen is clean!) and our unconscious mind is constantly weighing up these subjective benefits and costs in every decision we make in our daily life. The problem with self-care is that the perceived opportunity cost of it is productivity i.e. ‘doing things’. It could be completing items from a do list, working, writing another to do list, or anything else really, as long as it makes us ‘busy’. This means that generally, when we are busier, more stressed or take on more in our life, self-care gets shoved to the bottom of the list. We tend to sleep less, exercise less, isolate ourselves, eat worse food and don’t make time for relaxation or mindfulness. The reason I am challenging this today is because of an interesting thing that I’ve discovered over many thousands of clients over many years, and this is the fact that if we trust in the process of self-care and break the insidious downward spiral of what is ultimately ‘self harm’ and ‘self neglect’ then something magical happens. The Self Care Dividend If someone spends ten minutes each day meditating, for example, they will soon see 20 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - November/December 2021
improvements to productivity, mental focus, energy levels, motivation, happiness and sleep. For ten minutes of daily exercise, their brain will remember and learn better, they will have burnt excess energy, balanced their blood sugars and released mood enhancing and healing hormones. These are just two examples of the self-care dividend that we are so often forsaking. The result of this is the experience of tangible net benefits and I have countless examples of this in my client base. One such example is someone who had been working 16 hour days for months, was exhausted and completely neglecting self-care when I met them. I started them with 20 minutes of daily meditation and a half hour light workout, as well as overhauling their nutrition and this saw them leaving the office 2 to 3 hours earlier every night within a few weeks. It was very hard for them to do initially as it felt like ‘wasted time’ but by trusting in the process and investing the time required, they ended up with MORE time and many other benefits. It is clear therefore, that the perceived opportunity cost of self-care (‘doing stuff’) is actually far outweighed by the benefit to our overall physical and mental utility of actually taking care of ourselves. So, the next time you find yourself saying that you don’t have time to meditate, do some exercise, call a best friend or to cook a healthy meal, then remember that you are not acting in a rational fashion (in economic terms anyway) and immediately stop it. I guarantee that if you learn this lesson, you will soon experience a significant net benefit to multiple aspects of your life, and it doesn’t have to be Christmas or New Year to get started… how about now instead?

MANAGING PELVIC PAIN
M
any men and women struggle silently with ongoing pelvic pain. There are many possible causes of this. Pelvic pain is described as pain below your belly button. It can be in your abdomen and also in the genital area. New pain should always be investigated, so do contact your GP. Pain lasting more than 6 months is referred to as chronic pelvic pain [CPP]. Once all investigations have cleared any sinister causes, it may be worth seeking some professional help. Traditional physiotherapy techniques can be helpful. These can include soft tissue release, relaxation, breathing, lifestyle advice or even acupuncture. Occasionally, pelvic pain can link back to an earlier traumatic life event and people’s bodies can have a physical response to a psychological experience. This can also be helped by a practitioner specially trained in this area.
A simple way to help this situation is to try this exercise. n Try to let your tummy relax and watch as
you take a deep breath letting it expand. This gives some space for your breathing muscle, the diaphragm, to dome down allowing your lower lungs to expand. It feels quite different. n Now take normal
sized breaths and concentrate just your breathing for a few minutes.
n Try to do this each
day as evidence tells us that this affects the central nervous system and can reduce pain and anxiety.
If you search ‘Breathing exercises for stress NHS’ you will find a simple guide to doing this each day. Make it part of your routine. Take care, have a happy Christmas and a healthy, relaxed New Year.
As we head towards the celebration of Christmas, it is noticeable how much more stressed and anxious people become. This can also be a cause of pelvic or abdominal pain. When people are anxious, they don’t breathe properly. They take short, shallow breaths just using their upper lungs, raising their shoulders and pulling their tummies in. This doesn’t help chest, abdominal or pelvic function.

November Recipe
’m writing this on the morning of the first frost of winter. I’ve put the heating on and all I want to do is snuggle down with my cat. It made me think of comfort food for this months recipe. This is a dessert I made a couple of weeks ago but it really is more suitable for the colder months. I’m sure many of you already know how to make it but it was so delicious I thought I’d encourage you to give it a go again.
GOLDEN SYRUP STEAMED PUDDING ENOUGH FOR 6 LARGE HELPINGS. 200g softened butter 3 tbsps of golden syrup 200g caster sugar 1 tsp of vanilla paste 3 beaten eggs 200g self raising flour Grease a 1.2ltr pudding basin with a little of the butter and pour the golden syrup into the base. Using a mixer or an electric hand whisk beat the sugar and the butter together until it’s light and fluffy. Add the vanilla paste and then the eggs a
24 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - November/December 2021
little at a time until you have a nice batter. Add the self raising flour and just stir in to make sure it’s all combined but don’t overwork it. Pour the mixture into the pudding basin on top of the syrup. Cut a piece of greaseproof paper a lot wider than the rim of the basin and make a pleat down the middle and do the same with a piece of foil. Put them both together with the greaseproof paper under and place over the pudding and tie firmly with a bit of string. Put a saucer upside down in a large pan (big enough to hold the basin) and put the basin on top. Pour in enough boiling water to come half way up the basin then simmer for 11/2 to 2 hours with a lid on. Make sure it’s cooked by sticking a skewer into the middle – it should come out clean. Up turn the pudding onto a plate and serve with some lovely custard.

inter is a wonderful time to create warm quilted projects.

BRAMHALL GOLF CLUB MIXED GOLF
B
est wishes from the mixed organisers at Bramhall Golf Club.
Bramhall Golf Club has a fantastic number of mixed players who have attended events throughout 2021. Many are husband and wife pairs, however we also have a large number of couples made up from the Men’s and Ladies’ sections and we actively encourage participation in mixed golf. Whilst the competitions have couples vying for prizes, the main emphasis behind mixed golf at Bramhall is to continue to develop the excellent social side of the club. This not only helps new members meet others in competitive play but gives them opportunities to socialise too as there are informal meals following every event. One of our most popular events is the monthly Nine Wine and Dine where 9 holes of golf is followed by an excellent meal and even better conversation.
28 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - November/December 2021
If you are interested in learning more about Bramhall Golf Club, in the first instance please contact Rachel or Karen in the office on 0161 439 6092, extension 1 and they will be pleased to show you around our fantastic facilities. In the meantime, we wish you every success in your golf endeavours.” Kind regards Stephen and Rosa Sheard
ADVERTORIAL
“Rosa and I have had the pleasure of arranging mixed events for the last three years but we are retiring from these duties this year to concentrate on other roles within the club.
Mixed Golf promotes the Club ethos in endeavouring to be the friendliest and most family oriented golf club in the area and forms the mainstay of our extensive social calendar. Rarely is there an event on our social calendar that is not a sell-out.

LONG COVID RECOVERY PROGRAMME NOW AVAILABLE
Before I met Rob I had a terrible fear of flying which had been there for as long as I could remember. The phobia was extremely hard to live with because both my career as a professional footballer and my personal life involve frequent flying all over the world. I was desperate to get rid of the fear because of this, but was very skeptical of hypnosis at the same time... I should not have been skeptical however, as after just one hour with Rob I was completely cured of my phobia and have flown many times since with no problems at all. I would even say that I enjoy it!

F
USING RECLAIMED AND RECYCLED FURNITURE
rom a mid-century daybed to an upcycled vintage suitcase coffee table, reclaimed and recycled furniture and accessories are a big hit in the right place. There are lots of positives to using reclamation less landfill, preventing the harvesting of new trees as well as avoiding the use of environmental hazards to manufacture new products. Another is your neighbour/friend/ sister-in-law can’t pop out and pick one up. If you’re concerned about the ecological values of using old furniture and accessories, try the reclaimed and salvage yards as generally these items come right from where they were found to where you’re going to use it and aren’t altered in any way. An old church bench, a wrought iron gate or a Tudor stone fireplace will be exactly that in your home. Recycling something gives you the chance to put your own stamp on it (or somebody with amazing skill and style has already done it) and you have an item perfect for you. Rather than wander aimlessly around salvage fairs, think about what you need. Reclaimed shelves, picture frames, fireplace lintels are easy pick ups but how about a curved sofa or a
32 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - November/December 2021
kitchen island? You can ask the traders who may be able to point you in the right direction for your treasure. Think about how you can create something and look beyond the current condition. A vintage tennis racket could be made into a mirror or a tatty lamp could be transformed with a different shade and a lick of paint. OK I said about wandering aimlessly but sometimes you just see something and fall in love, if it grabs your heart I’m afraid, for me anyway, it grabs my purse. A rug could be a wall hanging, a boat’s steering oar could be a shelf, how about a gorgeous wooden door as a bed head? Your imagination can make anything you like from something you’re drawn to, it’s whether your own skills are enough to create it or if you’ll need some help. Take a trip to a salvage yard and go for it. Let me know if you need any help.

Can veneers be an option for you? A drill free, injection free, pain free smile makeover that can be done in just one appointment. This was one of the many cases that we have done where we have used composite bonding to transform a patient’s smile, and these amazing results were achieved in just one visit to the practice. We used composite edge bonding over a single session to give the patient’s teeth straighter edges and a smoother surface appearance, and also cover the discolouration and flecking.
