New Car Park For Stanwell Park Village

By Angela Fagerström On Tuesday March 13, Wollongong City Council (WCC) released their proposal to improve the Stanwell Park village car park and pedestrian access leading to the western side of Stanwell Park and Stanwell Park Railway Station. The draft proposal included: formalising the car park on the western side of Lawrence Hargrave Drive; widening the footpath at the intersection of Lawrence Hargrave Drive and Station Street; and changes to the pedestrian staircase on the western side of the footbridge. As part of the process, Council sought feedback on the plan - and feedback they got! At the council information kiosk which was originally scheduled for the same day that submissions closed, in just under three hours a wide range of issues were raised by locals and discussed with council staff. Concerns included: increased traffic congestion

at the intersection of Lawrence Hargrave Drive and Station Street; a reduction in the number of commercial parking spaces and an increase in the number of stairs leading towards the station. In an interview with the HDH a Council Landscape Architect explained how the stairs have been carefully designed to later accommodate ramps (on the southern side) to join the relatively flat platforms between stair sets, “It must be remembered this current proposal is just stage one” he added. Roman Dabrowski, spokesperson for the Stanwell Park community group Sharing our Spaces said of the proposal “The difficulty in commenting on the current proposal lies in the fact that there is no overall master plan or even a basic vision for Stanwell Park, and the community has no way of knowing how the current plans may fit into the possible plan, should one be prepared at some stage in the future.” Continued over page

From page one “Any proposal done in such a way runs a great risk of resulting in ‘band-aid’ solutions, which given the lack of clarity can easily be counterproductive for the overall objectives added Roman. The Sharing our Spaces group put forth a proposal initiative in 2010 and believe their submission is very relevant to the current proposal. Council representatives have met with the Sharing our Spaces group and their feedback will be considered for the final plan. The owner of 109 Lawrence Hargrave Drive, local businessman Mr John Venn said “It is great that Council is prepared to spend some money in the area, however, unusually for Council, there appears to be a great haste to start work on the project. “Obviously it is Council’s intention to create an appealing space around the commercial properties, the footpath and the road said Mr Venn. “My concern with the plans presented in the last few days was that it reduced the parking opposite our property by about nine cars and possibly about five car spaces opposite the General Store.

NEWS Mr Venn explained he was encouraged by his conversations with council staff on the morning of the information kiosk, “The staff did listen to my concerns, I just hope that translates through to the final design.” Both Mr Venn and Stanwell Park resident of more than 60 years, Mrs Elaine Pugh, spoke to the HDH on the day of the kiosk of plans that existed in around 2006, to ‘shave’ the peak of the hill for increased visibility roughly between 109 and 91 Lawrence Hargrave Drive. “I think this current plan will create a bottleneck in front of the general store, the peak of the hill needs the work first” Elaine commented. A council representative explained any such works plan under a previous council was unlikely to be resurrected, as the newly elected council is seeking community comment on the current plans proposed for the upgrade. Council has taken the concerns of senior residents at Hillcrest House on board; Lord Mayor Bradbery and the four Ward 1 councillors have scheduled a meeting with retirement village ratepayers on April 2 in order to gain a better understanding of the accessibility issues, and

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD to achieve the best outcome for nearby senior citizens. The submission period for the Stanwell Park village upgrade formally closed on Friday, March 30. A report will be prepared taking into consideration all comments and proposals received. This will then be compiled and used for developing the final design. Works are expected to commence in the current financial year. Details of the project’s development will be presented in upcoming editions of the HDH or to view the progress visit Council’s website www.wollongong.nsw.gov.au

URTV Helensburgh Comes To Helensburgh There are only three places in the world named Helensburgh. One is a suburb of Dunedin in New Zealand. The other two places are towns: our town which was founded in 1884 and the Helensburgh in Scotland which was founded in 1776. There has been an association between the two towns dating back to the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1911, public schools in both towns exchanged flags in formal ceremonies. The Sydney Morning Herald reported on our school’s ceremony: EXCHANGE OF FLAGS HELENSBURGH, Monday. At the Helensburgh Public School on Saturday [9 September 1911] about 1000 persons assembled to witness the unfurling of three flags brought from Helensburgh, Scotland, by Sir William McMillan. In February last the children of Helensburgh, N.S.W., forwarded a Union Jack and Commonwealth ensign to the school in Scotland. For yesterday’s function the school was decorated with bunting, palms, etc. Councillor Harper presided. Sir William M’Millan arrived by the afternoon train accompanied by Mr. Smithurst, secretary of the British Empire league and a number of ladies representing that league. Other visitors were Mr. J. B. Nicholson, M.L.A., and Mr. G. Youll, president of the Bulli branch of the British Empire League. Sir William addressed the children and told them of the warm reception he received from the Town Council, the school authorities, and prominent townspeople of Helensburgh, Scotland. Mr. Smithurst, Mr. J. B. Nicholson and Councillor G. Youll also spoke. When Mrs. H. Fielder hoisted the Union Jack the town band played the National Anthem and the children saluted the flag. Mr. C. G. Edmondson acted as secretary to the committee which arranged the gathering. Coincidently, as we celebrate our school’s 125th anniversary, Scotland’s Helensburgh has considerable interest in its namesake in New South Wales. Though the names of the two towns are pronounced differently – the Scots say ‘Helensborough’. In February, the Helensburgh and Lomond Community Advertiser magazine 4 Helensburgh & District Herald

[Scotland] published an article on Helensburgh in New South Wales and it generated a lot of interest. On February 20, Allan and Merilyn House of our Helensburgh and District Historical Society were hosts to Nicki MacDonald from the URTV News Team in Helensburgh, Scotland. Nicki interviewed Principal Chris Connor and senior students at Helensburgh Public School; was shown the 1911 flags in the school library; and was acquainted with the history of the school and how it functions today. Nicki then interviewed Alan Phillips and Jim Green from Metropolitan Colliery; and Allan House from the Historical Society. She was also taken on a guided tour of the town, Bald Hill and Sea Cliff Bridge. She took back over an hour’s video footage which will be edited and shown on URTV (http://helensburgh.tv/).

Dharawal Declared A National Park Lee Evans, Member for Heathcote, has welcomed the official establishment of Dharawal National Park as a historic milestone for the region. The 6,500 hectare National Park has no depth restriction meaning it is protected to the centre of the earth for the first time. “This National Park will indefinitely preserve the area’s incredible biodiversity including several endangered species and Sydney’s largest surviving koala population,” Mr Evans said. “It will also protect a large number of Aboriginal rock art and significant cultural sites.” Also welcoming the declaration of the Dharawal National Park, spokesperson for the Northern Illawarra Sustainability Alliance (NISA) Peter Turner commented “The declaration is long overdue and a tribute to the hard work over many years by dedicated members of the community such as Sharyn Culllis, Julie Sheppard, Caroline Graham and many others”

“There is some irony though, as the Dharawal National Park area doesn’t supply any water to our reservoirs - it all runs into the Georges River,” said Mr Turner. “So the declaration does nothing to protect or drinking water. Meanwhile next door in the Special Areas coal mining continues to damage our catchments and drilling for coal seam gas could start there any day now.” He went on to say “The Premier should stop making excuses and act in the public interest by banning mining in our catchments.” The Government has committed $1 million to improve visitor facilities and opportunities in the New National Park. These improvements include a new lookout with access for the disabled, improved walking access to the pools on Stokes Creek and picnic facilities. A loop walk to Maddens Falls has also been proposed for the Illawarra end of the National Park at Darks Forrest, which would allow visitors to walk down to the base of the falls. Special thanks must go to the National Parks Association of NSW, the Nature Conservation Council of NSW, Total Environment Centre, Blue Mountains Conservation Society, Rivers SOS, Colong Foundation for Wilderness, The Wilderness Society, and the Georges River Combined Councils.

COMMUNITY NEWS Local Writing Workshops Whether you’re a natural born writer or whether you came to writing in your retirement years, the world of words may seem at times alluring and at times elusive. Whenever two or more writers sit down together, the sharing of the writing process and the sharing of the written word can be transformative - magical for some, sacred for others, but for most just damn good fun. Expressions of interest are being sought from Northern Illawarra residents interested in attending Writers’ Workshops. We’re looking for both new and experienced writers who want to share their poetry, short stories, media etc and who are keen to improve their writing in a nurturing environment. It is important to note that the workshops are open to everyone, whether you are completely new with words or whether you have a shiny writing award atop the mantelpiece. Either way, we know you’ll have something to contribute and something to learn. Workshops are run by trained instructors at the Bushland Chapel in Helensburgh. We aim to provide a place in the community for creative collaborations to flourish, while at the same time provide teaching support for individual writers to hone their craft. We have been greatly assisted in doing this by Greg Watts at Helensburgh Post Office, and Chris the Manager of Bi-Lo and his staff. We have received letters from the Australian troops and personal thanks from our local service personnel all saying how much the parcels are appreciated. All are over the moon when they receive a tube of Vegemite as it is not on the Army menu. Also lollies and biscuits are appreciated as it gives them some of the comforts of home. We currently have two soldiers serving in Afghanistan who have family living in Helensburgh. With close on 15 years of varied travel industry experience, including hosting celebrities, Local resident and owner of Piccadilly Travel, Karen Dinsdale has a few travel tricks up her sleeve. “Internet booking sites have created a very cluttered online space and quite often advertising ‘hooks’ are not all they seem” said Karen, “I recommend people be wary of taxes and gratuities which may not be obvious”. Piccadilly Travel is a completely independent agency, which means Karen can assist with absolutely anyt cruise, airline, hotel and more. “Booking through Piccadilly Travel means there is no bias toward a particular product, package or airline unlike some competitors who work with preferred companies– ultimately this gives you the best value for your holiday dollar” Karen added, “my clients are often surprised that I can beat the online agents – its impossible to be in this game for more than a decade and not know a few tricks”. Karen explained that her long established relationship with wholesalers means she is able to secure discounts with cruise companies and in some cases credits which can be used while on voyage. By supporting your local travel agent you are also helping local sporting groups, dance schools and the other not for profit groups who benefit from donations. Karen concluded by saying “just bring us your quotes and give us a go!”

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD Make Mum’s Day!

What’s holding you back? It is easy to let time pass you by. We live in a fast-paced world. I always consider ourselves lucky, to live in such a little, supportive community, where people actually know and talk to each other. It puts a smile on my face when I watch people at our local shops, at playgrounds, cafes or just on the street . . . You get to know their stories, their worries, what makes them tick, what makes them laugh. When you open your ears and hearts (like most people do in small communities) you learn about their inner dreams and hopes . . . and I can’t help but ask myself ‘What’s holding you back? When you have a sentence in your heart that starts with “I always wanted to . . .” then it’s time to finish it! Whatever it was that was holding you back, there’s a simple trick I’d like to share with you. It is only ONE decision away. When do you decide ‘NOW’ is the time to live your dream? I’ve had the honour of working with quite a few people in my life who felt stuck, disconnected, unmotivated or just didn’t know what their passion was in life. It fills my heart with joy to watch their lives develop and unfold – it makes me happy to watch their smiles when having those little “aha-moments” and witness their deepest emotions when they re-connect to their inner passion. I can’t wait to hear your story; there’s no IF . . . there’s only HOW! The time to shine is now. www.muse-coaching.com 0415 520 092

Around 12 months ago, Kasey Mumford Flowers began operations as a home-based business in Helensburgh, primarily offering boutique wedding and event flowers. Since the closure of the florist in Helensburgh, Kasey has received a steady stream of phone calls, from people enquiring about the delivery of specialty bouquets and arrangements to the area. To meet this demand, Kasey has now uploaded an online shopping facility to her website, which will enable her to process orders for fresh, premium flowers. ‘It is always a shame to see a local business close. The kind of floral service that a bride expects, or that really suits life’s big events, is no longer catered for. People have lost a valuable service’, said Kasey. Kasey is offering the delivery of fresh bouquets and arrangements within a delivery network extending from Helensburgh to Wollongong CBD, on Fridays and Saturdays. Orders can be placed online through her shopping cart facility. Prices for her fresh flowers start at $50 and payment can be made via PayPal or Cash on Delivery. The online shopping facility allows customers to choose their size, colour, occasion and base. ‘I will be sourcing my flowers from the Sydney Flower Market and local wholesalers on Friday mornings, so the flowers I will be sending out will be absolutely fresh. I also like using interesting flowers and foliage in my designs; you can expect to see bouquets and arrangements which differ from those you can purchase at places like the supermarket. Also, I will periodically be placing information on the website about ordering for special occasions such as Mother's Day.’ To place an order, please visit www. kaseymumford.com. De-Stress And Find Time To Relax

By Lisa McKinlay, Otford Valley Sanctuary Parenting is a huge task with wonderful rewards, while at the same time it is incredibly demanding and tiring. I know firsthand, that while putting the children first in those early years of their development, we tend to neglect our own physical and emotional well-being. When my own children started school, I became passionate about creating a place where women could relax and unwind. Thus the Otford Valley Sanctuary Day Spa was born . . . I put much time and energy into creating a treatment menu women need and would love, that can be enjoyed in a peaceful environment. Somewhere they can totally switch off from their busy lives and feel pampered. I urge parents to consider the value of destressing; finding time to relax is so important. I know how difficult that can be, but a de-stressed parent is more able to stay calm and therefore make better decisions. Be proactive instead of reactive. Having mental clarity means less oversights and forgetfulness, leading to better planning and time management, and therefore more productive days. Massage has many benefits: reduces tension and stress; increases circulation, metabolism and lymphatic flow; promotes mental clarity and a general feeling of well-being.

SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL BUSINESS First Impressions Are Everything By Tanya Demello, Bevans Helensburgh I often wonder how speed dating would go, if all the participants turned up in what they would normally wear, while slumped in front of the TV on a Tuesday night. Although you get 4 minutes to get to your know your date, the food stains on their favourite sweat pants and the frays around the edges of well-worn t-shirts, would probably cut the conversation pretty short. At this point, you may be wondering what speed dating has to do with property styling. Well a lot actually, because on any given Friday night on the internet, and on Saturday between 10am and 3pm, a whole host of people are speed dating properties, in the search for their dream home. On the internet, first impressions are everything; buyers decide very quickly whether or not to put a property on their list to view. At opens, that first impact is the most important; most consumers make up their minds about the value of products within the first few minutes of viewing them. So like every participant at a speed dating evening, a property for sale needs to look, feel and smell its best. Although people believe that the solid structure, build quality and features of their property are

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD what drives the sale of their house, what really drives a sale is emotion. When buyers have an emotional attachment to a property, they are more likely to pay a premium price to get what their heart desires. What creates that initial emotion is generally the look and tone of something. When we look around at an environment that is beautiful, we can connect with the style of it; we start to imagine ourselves living in that property. Styling aims to not only create this connection, but to neutralise a home so it will have a wider appeal. Left unstyled, the average buyer would find it difficult to imagine how a home could look its best, and so it comes off their already short lists. Styling may seem like real estate jargon, but in truth, styling your home for sale is exactly the same as preparing yourself for an interview, party or even speed dating. When you have less than four minutes to make an impression, presentation is everything. Inset: Before styling Main image: after styling

CHEERS AND JEERS JEERS to the three drunken young men who seemed to deliberately target a local family home with eggs. They would have had to have gone right into the property to do it, and then escaped in a white van throwing their cans of bourbon and cola on the road. Thanks to neighbours, you were spotted! CHEERS to Wollongong Council! On February 27, I requested Wollongong Council’s Parks Maintenance Division have a look at our 3 Helensburgh Parks, [1. Gymea Glades (duck pond), 2. Charles Harper reserve, 3. Eastern end of the Crescent] to repair some significant swing defects, holes in the floor surfaces and weed issues. My family have been delighted with the results, with all 3 parks having new working infants swings, and other repairs done. And within two weeks!

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD JEERS to the rail line maintenance workers (Sat 24th March) who let an 86 yr old visitor to the Burgh (and his carer in her 60’s) make his way to the station ticket office, while his lift to the station drove away, only to find the trains weren’t running and the buses were leaving from the top of town. A quick word from you could have saved him a great deal of time, energy and anxiety! CHEERS and a big thank you to the young people who took our dog Ralph to the Vets after he suffered a heart attack while on his much loved walk. Thank you from Margaret Shaw. CHEERS to all those involved in the trivia fundraiser at ‘The Club’ on Sunday March 25. It was a wonderful display of community spirit and I am sure the Brown family were feeling the love and support from the crowd in the function room. To the event organisers – well done!

COMMUNITY NEWS Most Wanted Weeds Around 2508 By Karen Lane LANTANA - WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE (Major Tips: remove after nesting season; either pull it out or cut back and poison, in small localised areas). Lantana grows in bushland near Otford Railway Station, around Helensburgh and in degraded bush areas. In the local area, there are weeds harder to eradicate than Lantana, including Asparagus Fern, Privet and Morning Glory, not to mention Madeira Vine currently in flower all over Helensburgh. However, Lantana rates a special mention because it is one of the weeds most easily spotted by the average person - like the WANTED posters seen all the time in Western movies and occasionally in real life – and when someone spots something easily they’re more likely to report it or do something about it. Lantana is an environmental weed and has been declared a Weed of National Significance (WONS). An environmental weed provides a threat to native flora and fauna, because of its ability to spread through bushland and National Park inhibiting natural ecosystems. Many people recognise Lantana because of its small, brightly coloured and pungently-scented flowers, but it’s the densely structured branch and leaf system which causes the most problem. A dense thicket of Lantana is surprisingly resistant to fire, altering fire regimes.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD The impenetrable thicket also presents other problems such as physically inhibiting the growth of native plants, and indirectly inhibiting them by creating too much shade. The thicket also provides a haven for feral animals. However, with the bad also comes the good, as Lantana also provides habitat for other ‘good’ wildlife, especially small birds. Therefore, the first warning to be heeded in the removal of Lantana, is that it’s best timed to avoid nesting season. Clearing large areas of Lantana is a relatively easy process using simple mechanical means. Lantana doesn’t have a deep root system so even large plants can be pulled out, and the more difficult plants may have their stems cut to ground level and then herbicide applied. However, the second warning about Lantana removal, is that clearing large areas of land will open the ground to invasion by other weeds, especially annual weeds like Fleabane and Cobbler’s Pegs. Large areas growing Lantana will suppress any seed germination, both native and weed, and when a dramatic increase in germination occurs because of the sudden increase in light, the small native seedlings may initially be outgrown by weeds. If there is no follow-up weeding, then one or more weeds will replace the original Lantana. If the new weeds are Madeira Vine or Asparagus Fern, or some of the other environmental weeds, then there could be even more problems in the future. The main way to overcome such problems is to clear small areas progressively. Start adjacent to good healthy bushland and let regenerating natives become established before more clearing. This way you are not robbing the habitat of native fauna and birds. If you would like more information or would like to volunteer to help remove local weeds contact Helensburgh Landcare at www. helensburghlandcare.org.au. For more information on weeds of the South Coast, see www.esc.nsw.gov.au/weeds or www. weeds.org.au for information on Weeds of National Significance. Many thanks to Allan and Merilyn House from Landcare for their assistance in providing information for this story.

Helensburgh Public School News By Licinda Carter Relieving Assistant Principal ZONE SWIMMING CARNIVAL There was perfect weather for the Zone Swimming carnival which was held at Engadine Pool on Monday, 5th March. YOUTH NEWS Southern Cross Kids’ Camps By Sheree Host, SCKC Director “It was the most fun in all of my 10 years”, commented an ten year old camper that attended Southern Cross Kids Camp 2011. Southern Cross Kids Camp is a not for profit organisation that advocates for children that do not have a voice. Southern Cross Kids Camp offers a specialised five day camping program for children that have experienced trauma. All of the children are referred by government and non government agencies and characteristically are in school yrs 3-6, being generally 8-12yrs. Many of these children find in a Southern Cross Kids Camp a haven- an opportunity to play,to laugh,to experience new activity and to succeed. Most of all they find acceptance without any strings, love without any reciprocal gratification expected and an atmosphere of ‘family’. Through the provision of a safe environment, Southern Cross Kids’ Camps gives children positive reinforcement that they are valuable, making a difference to the negative impact abuse has had on their young lives. Children

from all walks of life deserve to be given every opportunity to develop a personal sense of competency, improved social skills, as well as assistance in becoming resilient, productive members of society, despite the adversity they have encountered. The children that attend Southern Cross Kids Camps are given an exciting week of making great memories. Memories that build their self image, memories that allow them to smile, memories that give them hope that life is meant for living! Last year there were over 60,000 substantiated cases of child abuse, neglect and abandonment in our nation. 60,000 is a really BIG number and appears overwhelming! Southern Cross Kids Camps focus on the one, making a Difference in the Heart of a Child, one at a time. One child understanding he or she has a right to feel safe, to hear and be heard, to understand and be understood, to belong and know they are valued, simply for being themselves! I would like to commend highly all in this community who give of their time, their finances and their care to the many opportunities to extend friendship and communicate value to others. CLUB NEWS U3A TERM 2 U3A Term 1 proved fascinating and informative because of the varied topics we were introduced to. Hearing about the crimes committed in NSW by criminals in the 1920's and their punishment was an eye opener. The talk on our astrological star sign and their positive and negative qualities were challenging. Betty Warne introduced us to an amazing DVD, "The Floating Brothel"; on the convict women who were transported to Australia on the ship LADY JULIANA. They were to be married off to the men of the early colony. The term "brothel" applies because the women were paired off with the marines first, during the trip out to Australia. Term 1 was quite an historical tour through ancient Greece, ancient England, late 18th Century Australia. Term 2 topics also promise to be equally fascinating and historical. More history follows, on Henry VIII and his six wives and the early women of Colonial Australia. If your family or friends have experienced turmoil of late, or want to know more about the 2012 prophecies, then come to the talk on

Helensburgh Toastmasters

Rona Powell celebrated her 90th Birthday with her sons, daughter-in-laws, grandchildren and great grandchildren on Sunday 11 March at the Helensburgh Workers Club. Rona’s birthday was officially held on March 16 in Hawaii where she is holidaying with her granddaughters Rhiannon and Gwynneth Powell.

Worrying about that job interview? Finding meetings difficult to handle? Having sleepless nights thinking about that wedding speech? Want to get ahead in the work place? Well perhaps Helensburgh Toastmasters can help you! Most members are aged between 18 and 50 and from diverse backgrounds. Why not come along and observe a meeting? It’s pretty laid back. The group meet every 1st and 3rd Monday of the month, 7:30pm at Helensburgh Workers Club. Contact: Phil – 0408 259 633 or James 0429 665 807 Testimonial: One of our members ‘Charlie’ joined as a way of addressing meeting nerves. We spoke to him further down the track. His response was: “I used to dread speaking in front of more than 3 or 4 people. Now I look forward to the challenge. Helensburgh Toastmasters is a great group of people; very welcoming and encouraging. I know some people might be apprehensive about these sorts of meetings, but if you don’t give it a go you will never know if they can help!”

CLUB NEWS Fellowship Of The First Fleeters South Coast Chapter By Betty Warn My ‘First Fleeter’ named Peter Hibbs, was born in 1762 in Swanage, Dorset. Aged about 10, he stowed away on the Endeavour, and was later discovered on board in Tahiti. The cook made him work as a cabin boy until the ship returned to England. The next we hear of Peter, he was an able-bodied seaman on the Goliath. From there he joined the crew of the Sirius. The Sirius was a naval vessel of 540 tons and the largest ship of the First Fleet. After arrival in Sydney Cove, Peter was chosen as one of the crew who rowed Phillip up the coast when de discovered the Hawkesbury River. Phillip decided an area beside the tank stream would be suitable for the settlement. The colony was short of food, so in September, Phillip decided to send the Sirius away for much-needed supplies. The ship, with Peter as a crew member, set sail for South Africa, returning to Sydney on January 20, 1789. The Sirius had become the first ship in history to sail around the world at Antarctic latitudes. The next voyage was to Norfolk Island under the command of Captain Hunter. Strong winds blew the Sirius onto the reef, where she stayed. Luckily, Peter and the crew rescued everyone; even the food was saved and the animals swam to shore. Most of the crew, including Peter were shipwrecked on Norfolk Island. Peter was given a land grant of 60 acres which he farmed. He met and married Mary Pardoe, and they spent several years farming on the island. In 1797 and 1798 a 25 ton sloop was built on Norfolk Island; the completed Norfolk - with Peter as her master - sailed for Sydney. Bass and Flinders had arrived in Sydney, and they needed a small ship to sail around Tasmania to prove it was an island. Governor Hunter allowed them the use of the Norfolk, provided it was back in Sydney within twelve weeks. The voyage was so successful that Flinders named Hibbs Pyramid, Hibbs Point, Hibbs River and Hibbs Bay after Peter. Apart from Bass Strait, Peter was the only crew member to have this honour bestowed upon him. Returning to the Hawkesbury, Peter farmed and then bought a 14 ton sloop called Recovery. Peter

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD and his son George used the sloop for trade until it was wrecked off Port Stephens. Peter, George and a female passenger had to swim ashore and walk the fifty or so miles to Newcastle. On the way, the local Aborigines relieved them of their clothing, so they had to walk naked. They reached Newcastle and boarded the Windsor for the rest of the trip. In an incredible stroke of bad luck, they were again shipwrecked when the Windsor struck Long Reef; again they had to walk. Peter then turned back to farming, and his property Courangra became officially his. It was situated on the Haycock Reach nearly opposite the present village of Spencer. Peter could not read or write, but he could swim, which was unusual for the times. His ability as a seaman was beyond question. In 1832 Peter sold Courangra. Peter’s wife Mary died on May 19, 1844 and Peter followed her on September 12, 1847. Both are buried in Laughtondale Cemetery alongside their beloved Hawkesbury River. I feel very proud to be descended from this wonderful couple. Any enquiries, please phone Betty Warn 4294 2735

SPORT Callisthenics for a Body of Steel? By Elaine Bolton The word ‘callisthenics’ reminds me of Jane Fonda style side lying leg raises, complete with leg warmers, in aerobics classes. However, gymnasts use extensive callisthenics exercises and would certainly rank as some of the strongest most powerful athletes around, especially if comparing athletes of similar size. Callisthenics are also used to produce incredible strength in martial arts and many other sports. But can they be useful for the average person wanting to improve their sporting performance, their strength or appearance and health? Absolutely, but they need to be used in the right way. Callisthenics comes from the Greek words kallos meaning beauty and sthenos meaning strength and refers to gymnastic bodyweight exercises used to achieve fitness and grace of movement. To become powerful and strong you don’t need all the latest gym machines or fancy gadgets, nor even any weights at all. While it is true that performing endless squats, sit-ups and push-ups will only improve stamina not strength, the real key to improving strength using these exercises is to progress them to harder versions of the exercises. Follow this kind of training plan and you might just end up reaching a much higher level of useful athletic ability than that achieved by most Fitness Centre members (those that stay members for more than a few months that is). This is because callisthenic exercises move the body as it is meant to move, in an integrated way. It develops the tendons, joints and nervous system as well as the muscles and so the body becomes strong as a whole. This is in contrast to many bodybuilding exercises when the muscles are worked mainly in isolation, repetitively with heavy weights, which can result in joint damage. Paul Wade in his book Convict Conditioning describes a system of progressive callisthenic exercises using progressions that will take people from a very easy level suitable for complete beginners and those returning from injury up to complete mastery of six main exercises using only bodyweight together with a couple of easily accessible props.

40 Helensburgh & District Herald

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD The completion of his 10 step system, would see someone able to complete one arm push-ups, one arm handstand push-ups, one arm pull-ups, dropping into a bridge position from standing (bend over backwards and touch the floor) and returning to standing, single leg full squats (pistols), and hanging straight leg raises. There is a standard that must be reached with each step before progressing on to the next level. Here is the first step in the progression towards a basic handstand push-up (don’t forget to warm up first before attempting this). Step 1: Headstand against the wall. Find a solid wall, place a pillow or folded towel by the base of the wall. Place the top of your head on the pillow about 20cm from the wall. Put your palms down either side of your head about shoulder width apart. Lift your hips up high then kick your legs up toward the wall. Allow your legs to straighten once on the wall. Keep the mouth closed. Start by holding for 30 secs. When you can hold this position for 2 mins you are ready for the next step, which is a Crow Stand (often used in yoga, balancing on the hands with the knees resting above the elbows). A new callisthenics class called Ultimate 6 will run at Mind the Gap Yoga & Fitness, Unit 19, Helensburgh Business Park on Thursdays at 06.00am starting on 12th April. It is suitable for anyone, young or old, fit or unfit. Cost $15/ class or $130 for 10 classes (can be used for any of our classes). If you can’t make this time but are interested in this type of class please email Elaine at physicalpursuit@bigpond.com with your preferred times. Elaine Bolton is an experienced Personal Trainer, CrossFit Instructor & Triathlon Coach at Mind the Gap Yoga & Fitness. She can be contacted at 0417 679 639 or email: physicalpursuit@bigpond.com

SPORT Helensburgh Womens’s Bowling Club My thanks to Joan Gardner for looking after the bowls reporting over many months of 2011, it was very much appreciated. Apologies for missing the last issue, seems I am out of practise and missed the cut off date. Our lady bowlers were all happy to get back on the green this year after our long break. President Shirley Cassidy was happy to welcome two new bowlers, Pat Watts and Ann Jackson and these ladies are giving everyone a run for their money on the green. I believe their past experiences on the golf course are helping them adapt to our game very quickly. Congratulations girls and I am sure you will enjoy the social atmosphere we have within our club. Rhonda Christie, our organiser, has done well getting the competition games underway, the results detailed below. I have not the space to elaborate about the games played but some games were exceptional, when you are only gaining one point each way on each end, it is a marathon effort to get to 31 and many of these games were close. 07 February: Major Singles: Winner Beatrice Gallagher, R/up Joan Gardner, Winner Wendy Britten, R/up Robyn Single, Winner Robyn Smith, R/up Pat Watts 14 February: Major Singles: Winner Helen Haynes, R/up Violet West: Winner June Killham, R/up Lenore Bartlem: Consistency: Winner Elaine Smith, R/Up Robyn Single 21 February: Queen of the Green: Winner Rhonda Christie, R/Up June Killham. News From The Senior Tigers The Senior Tigers are well underway for 2012 and have begun the year on a high in trials form. Hosting Manly Club, Valley United, our 18s took on their 19s and had an impressive first-up hit out. With several players on rep duties, the boys had a good win. Reserve Grade and Firsts were ready to roll, however only one grade made the trek, and our boys had to play for 30 minutes for each squad. Not an ideal hit out before the first official trial, where our club travelled to Wests for three grades of football. In the 18s, again with both teams missing rep players, the boys played out an unimpressive win over their rivals, although running 25 plus players on and off makes it tough to get a good settled game. However, all got good footy time; well done boys. Regis came out of the blocks slow and were down 20-4 at halftime. A solid second half saw the Tigers with 26 unanswered points to win 30-20 and a good start for Gav’s boys. In a hard fought Grand Final Replay, the Tigers played their first real hit out (Wests have had a few trials) and came away winners 32-24; a good start for the club as a whole. Unfortunately, the women’s side cannot buy a trial, with no one wanting to give them a game, so they will have to start the season on solid training alone. With a last official trial on the weekend of March 31 against Dapto (at home), our boys will kick off the season proper against Thirroul on Sunday April 15 at Thirroul. Women’s, Firsts and Regis will play, with the U18s Illawarra Redbacks doing battle in the CRL Championships. The U18s competition will start the following week. So here’s one for the calendar: Sunday April 22, the Mighty Tigers take on archenemy Collegians, in our first home game of the season: 11.30 am - 18s, 1 pm - Regis, 2.30 pm - Firsts and 4 pm – Women’s. We hope for a sellout home crowd and urge all supporters, past players, juniors, parents of the Tigers to get involved. The easiest way is with a Gold Membership. With a Gold Membership, you are not only becoming a member, but you are contributing to the life of the Tigers. We are not in the same category as our richer clubs down south, some of who spend $300,000 plus, with the backing of leagues clubs etc. Whilst our community are right behind their 42 Helensburgh & District Herald

rugby league team and our sponsors are a huge benefit to our survival, it’s the $50 Gold Membership that allows us to keep four teams on the field. Obtaining a Gold Membership, entitles you to free entry to Rex Jackson Oval on our home games. Multiply the Illawarra-sanctioned entry fee of $7 for eight games and you are already saving. There are also savings on clothing and refreshments at the bar, making this the best way to help the Tigers. Many of our supporters could not make it to all the games last year, but realised the importance of a Gold Membership - this helps keep our seniors competitive and on the field, in the best competition outside the NRL. So please come up to Col at training, Tues - Thurs 6pm 7.30pm and become a part of our club. With two Premierships, A Grand Finalist, Minor Premiers/ Finalist and Finalists in 2011, we can begin this year full of resolve, that the Tigers are going to give the Illawarra Coal Competition a good shake in all grades. Go the Mighty Tigers!

Two Crews Into State Final By Mark Lea, Boat Captain Helensburgh Stanwell Park Boat Crews performed well at the recently held NSW Surf Life Saving Championships. Two crews travelled to Fingal Beach in northern New South Wales to contest the state titles. For the first time in the club’s history, a junior crew made it to a state final. Two crews making it to a state final in the same year was another first for the Club. The u/19 junior crew and the u/23 women’s crew both made the final. This is a great result for such a small club. The u/19 junior crew of Toby Lea, Chris Doran, Dom Kelso, Niall Carpenter and sweep Mark Lea performed well above what was expected. After three rounds the boys were in 3rd place on the pointscore, heading into the knockout phase. They continued to row well, never finishing outside the top three. Every race they gave their all and could barely stand up at the finish of each row. This commitment and determination they gave to each other helped them to earn a spot in the final. In the final, Avoca Beach got away from the rest of the field, with the other crews all very close to each other and the boys sitting in about 3rd spot. They held this position until the wave zone where they were soundly beaten by another crew to finish 4th. This was a great result for the boys and is a reward for all the hard training that they have done throughout the year; they should be proud of their effort. The u/23 women’s crew commenced racing on the back of some good form, after winning the South Coast Boat Series and progressed well through the early rounds to make the final. They were a bit unlucky in the final, getting swamped by a wave out the back of the surf, then rowing strongly back into second spot by the wave zone, where they just couldn’t pull down the same wave as the winners Collaroy Beach. After falling off that wave they had to try to beat the other crews who were already on the following wave. All three crews crossed the line together with the girls given 4th place.

Although they were a bit disappointed at first with the result, the girls know they rowed well and are capable of turning the tables on the other crews at the upcoming Australian titles. The following weekend the Best of the Best Boats Carnival was held at North Narrabeen. This is an invitational carnival for the top crews of each local series. The u/23 woman gained entry to this for winning the South Coast Boat Series. Again, the girls rowed strongly and made the final. With the hunger of missing out on a medal at state, the girls attacked the final right from the start and built up a good lead by the turning cans. They held this lead all the way back to the beach to win by a wave ahead of the other crews. The Australian Titles are the next event on the calendar, to be run on the last weekend of March. Only the u/23 women’s crew are going to represent Helensburgh Stanwell Park, so we wish them well for the titles.

Sunday Social Golf Club From the desk of El Presidente The skies continue to drop that liquid sunshine upon us and as a result, we find yet another month passes without getting out the clubs. With all this rain we have been having, the word is out that the club might change from being a Golf Club to a White Water Rafting Club! It has also been noticed on eBay that they are now selling ‘inflatable’ buggies (lol). The long range forecast is saying that we can expect to see that shiny gold thingy again real soon….woo hoo. If you like swinging a golf club, losing balls, enjoy being outdoors and meeting new people why not join us? We are a local social group of hackers

who enjoy playing a round or three. We play the first Sunday of every month at Boomerang Golf Course, located on the old highway up on Maddens Plains. Tee time is from 8am and there are some terrific prizes to be won. You are more than welcome to bring a friend. Give Tony a call on 4294 2696 so he can confirm numbers. In closing, we say farewell to one of our member’s dad - Jim O’Connor passed away this month. Jim often joined us at our Father’s Day event and enjoyed very much playing a round with his son Mark; I think he enjoyed the contest and keeping Markie on his toes. May knowing you’re in the hearts and thoughts of others Mark, help you and the family through this time of sorrow. Our sympathies and prayers are with you. A quick message from the Club Caddie, Justin….. “My tip for taking 5 strokes off anyone’s golf game…. it’s called an eraser”
