Ocean Challenge On Again

The annual Stanwell Park Ocean Challenge will be held for the 12th time on Sunday March 24. This popular event invites swimmers to tackle the 2.3 kilometres around the cliffs from Coalcliff to Stanwell Park!

This is a premier participatory local sport event, and deserves widespread support.

Participants are asked to report to Stanwell Park Surf Club by 9.15 am, with free shuttle buses taking swimmers, families and spectators to Coalcliff beach for the swim back. (Spectators can also catch the bus back).

Andrew Perrin says the event has attracted 480 swimmers for the past 4 years, and aims to top 500 for the first time this year. “Nathan Johnston, well known visually impaired athlete, will compete for his eleventh time - a remarkable achievement,� Andrew says.

We Connect

By Carina Herbert Holy Cross Primary School will be holding its annual fete on Saturday March 16 from 9 am.

This year’s theme is “We-Connect” as funds raised will be used to improve digital technology in the classroom. It also reflects our school’s desire to connect with the community.

A Tech Museum has been created to display dated technologies. Be sure to take a look and bring the kids. Have they ever actually seen a cassette player or a turntable? Reminiscing is a great way to bring people together and get you talking. We may even have pieces used before your time!

An important part of fete day for kids is the rides and no-one will be disappointed by our line-up! We have rides for all ages including Mini Jeeps, and the ever-popular Super Slide!

Our newest attraction is The Jungle Run - an inflatable obstacle course for all ages. For the older kids (and grown-ups who want to play like kids) the inflatable Gladiator Game will be sure to please.

If you are feeling a connection with Lady Luck, why not have a go at one of our fabulous prize games. The Chocolate Wheel is a fete favourite for young and old and the prizes on offer this year will keep you smiling.

There is a retail connection for the shoppers too in our fabulous stalls. We have some new additions to our selection this year including Cup Cake Decorating! Fete favourites such as the Cake Stall (scrummy treats to share or scoff), Gift Baskets (overflowing with surprise), plant stall (get in early), White Elephant and Showbags will all be there to name but a few.

The entertainment program will be made up of local talent to enthral and delight and as always, the children are working very hard on their acts to charm and warm the hearts of their audience.

Grab a bite from the BBQ or a juicy corn on the cob. For the coffee lovers, the Coffee Van will be on location to help calm the nerves. Sit back, take in some of the entertainment or grab a book from the bookstall and lose yourself in a story.

New CSG Rules May Change Outlook For 2508

By Angela Fagerström A week after the Planning and Assessment Commission (PAC) met in Helensburgh (February 13), to hear community feedback on Apex Energy’s application for an extension of time for their exploration licences in Darkes Forest, Premier O’Farrell announced sweeping changes to coal seam gas (CSG) regulation in New South Wales.

The Helensburgh meeting demonstrated overwhelming support in favour of PAC rejecting an extension of time to Apex Energy. Speakers included representatives from Wollongong City Council, Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council, Doctors for the Environment Australia, Public Health Association of Australia, Stop CSG Illawarra and Stop CSG Wollondilly.

Of the 33 speakers to address PAC, only Tom Fontaine of Magnum Gas & Power (formerly Ormil Energy) joint venture partner to Apex Energy, spoke in the affirmative. Mr Fontaine later told media “We wouldn’t be here if we did not believe there were more positives than negatives”.

The Premier’s legislation modifications have been widely hailed as a positive for residents living near CSG drilling sites and the broader agriculture industry subject to new applications.

However, it remains unclear what the implications will be for the Apex Energy project, as it appears to be under consideration using the previous legislation, which is far less stringent than Premier O’Farrell’s new package.

Under the package endorsed by NSW Cabinet, new applications will be subject to the following: • A two kilometre exclusion zone will be imposed around residential areas to prevent new CSG exploration, assessment and production activities covering both surface and underground works.

• Exclusion zones will apply to identified critical industry clusters, such as the viticulture and equine industry.

• The independent Environment Protection Authority (EPA) will be the lead regulator of environmental and health impacts of CSG activities in NSW and will be responsible for compliance and enforcement.

• All exploration, assessment and production titles and activities will be required to hold an Environment Protection Licence.

• The Chief Scientist and Engineer will conduct an independent review of all CSG activities in NSW, including the impact on water catchments.

• An Office of Coal Seam Gas Regulation will be established within the Department of Trade and Investment, Regional Infrastructure and Services to enforce other regulations.

The Stop CSG Illawarra group quickly responded to the Premier’s announcement with “The NSW Government has announced new coal seam gas (CSG) rules, including a ban on CSG development in residential areas and critical industry clusters, such as horse breeders and wine producers.”

“But they (NSW Government) also stated this would only apply to new CSG exploration, assessment and production activities, and they have not ruled out drinking water catchments” the statement continued.

The Helensburgh & District Herald (HDH) contacted the office of the Premier to find out the implications of the new legislation - specifically for the Darkes Forest Apex Energy project and asked; Is Apex Energy’s application for extension of time deemed a “new” project under the new CSG regulation package?

If PAC recommends the extension of time modification be refused, will a new application be subject to the new CSG regulations and if so, will a new environmental assessment report be required?

At the time this edition of the HDH went to print the office of the Premier had not responded.

Whatever the outcome of PAC and the implications of O’Farrell’s new CSG regulation package for Darkes Forest, Member for Heathcote Lee Evans has stated “I strongly believe that coal seam gas extraction should not be allowed near drinking water catchments or environmentally sensitive areas”.

“I am fighting for even stronger regulations and I will not rest until water catchments and environmentally sensitive areas are completely protected” stated Mr Evans.

The Helensburgh Lions Club invites you to its fifth fabulous Easter Scramble in Charles Harper Park on Easter Saturday, 30 March, so make sure you’re free between 9am and 11.30am, for a morning full of food and fun! Join us from 9am for breakfast – bacon and eggs, sausages or pancakes with fresh fruit salad. Buy a raffle ticket for some chocolatey prizes and then enjoy a free interactive and informative reptile show with Snake Tales!

When the snakes have slithered away, the Scramble begins! To Scramble, we need eggs, so please bring along some eggs for the Easter basket so there is plenty to go around! There will be two sessions, the first for children under 5, the second for children 6 and over. Remember the Scramble rules: No pushing or shoving No taking other people’s eggs, and Absolutely, NO bags or buckets!

You will be asked to leave the Scramble if you collect eggs in anything other than your hands.

Let’s follow the Scramble rules and everyone will have the chance to have fun and chomp on chocolate at the Scramble! We hope you can come along and be a part of this fabulous Lions Club community event!

Cafe Club celebrates 10 years of friendship

Northern Illawarra Neighbour Aid Inc (NINA) is a local non-profit, community based organisation located in Helensburgh and supported by volunteers.

The Service is funded under the Home & Community Care (HACC) Program. One of the special services offered by NINA, Café Club has just reached the milestone 10 year anniversary.

CAFE CLUB is a weekly group providing Culture, Activity, Friendship and Education to clients in Helensburgh.

One of Café Clubs regulars and local treasure Mary Bozzo, wrote a poem which sums up the special place Café Club holds in the community and it was read out at the 10 year celebrations; 6 March 2013 Helensburgh & District Herald

By Jenny Sherratt Watching the movie Bag it at the Bushland Chapel, got me thinking about how we as a community can reduce our dependence on plastic shopping bags. But why do we need to stop using plastic bags? Think about the life cycle of plastic bags: • They are derived from oil, so there is the drilling and transportation of oil and the impact on marine life caused by oil spills • Carcinogenic gases such as benzene are emitted during the manufacturing process • When they eventually break down, they release toxins into the soil and waterways • They block stormwater drains causing flooding • They kill seabirds, turtles and other sea creatures when they are ingested or get tangled up in them.

So, what are the alternatives? There are a number of options such as re-usable bags, cane baskets and cardboard boxes.

Unfortunately, many re-usable bags are also made from plastics or other synthetic materials, so ensure that you buy bags made from natural fibres which will biodegrade when the bag is no longer usable e.g. jute, calico, organic cotton, hemp, bamboo or canvas.

Jute bags can be purchased very cheaply at Bi-Lo and calico bags can be purchased from the Flame Tree Community Co-op at Thirroul.

The Salvos Store is also a good source for non-plastic re-usable bags and cane baskets, while cardboard boxes can be obtained from BiLo if you ask. Markets and on-line stores such as Oxfam and The Eco Shop sell great re-usable bags.

Of course, if you have the time and skill, you could make your own from materials that you already have lying around the house or from the Salvos.

Remember to recycle unwanted plastic bags in the specially marked recycling bin at Bi-Lo.

It’s nice to know that residents also support the foundation behind helping thousands of Australian’s beat Leukaemia.

On Saturday March 16 from 10.30am local resident Sophia Atkinson will be outside Bi-Lo (Walker Street, Helensburgh) colouring hair and shaving heads to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

The World's Greatest Shave raises around half the money needed by the Leukaemia Foundation to fund its important work – providing practical and emotional support to people with blood cancer, as well as investing millions in research.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD Helensburgh Business Park Reaches The Next Stage Response to the Helensburgh Business Park (HBP) stage 1 development has been strong and due to this HBP is now selling Stage 3 off the plan. The 15 light industrial, strata titled units range in size from 75-125sqm and Developer Andy Offord is offering buyer’s incentive to get in early.

“Stage 1 saw a range of businesses make the move to HBP for space, visibility and business growth” said Andy. “We weren’t sure what to expect with stage 1 but the response was excellent and just 9 months after completion HBP stage 1 was fully occupied and it has proved to be a great place to operate a business”.

SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL BUSINESS 2012 Market Wrap

By Troy McNeice, McGrath Real Estate Thirroul Despite the global financial crisis (GFC) bringing challenging times for all economies and financial markets, we can say with certainty that Australian residential property has shone as an asset class amongst its peers. While most markets in the US and Europe have seen price declines in the range of 25-50%, the Australian market has stood firm with price corrections ranging in general from 5% to 25% during the same period.

So, what is it that kept us in such good shape while the rest of the world suffered far greater falls? I think there are a few key factors that worked for us: • A strong banking environment left us with far less subprime carnage than elsewhere and the banks never stopped lending to qualified buyers during the GFC. • Government incentives were highly successful in attracting first home buyers into the market during the early stages of the GFC. In the past year alone, almost 39,000 First Home Buyer Grants were processed in NSW.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD • A housing shortage meant there was a reasonable balance between supply and demand, so as demand reduced it was less noticeable because we were in a period of artificial low supply.

So where to from here?

One thing we know for sure is you can’t pick the bottom of the market until it has passed. So with this in mind, I’ll try to provide you with my ideas on where we are in the cycle, and more importantly, where we may head from here.

I’ll start with what, in essence, is my best gut feeling on this. Essentially, I believe our northern property market is past the worst and heading for some blue skies in 2013. That’s not to say I expect either a straight line growth recovery or an instant uplift in prices. Neither of these outcomes is likely.

So what am I seeing on the ground?

A few things: • Growing buyer demand with an unquestionable increase in overall consumer confidence.

• Multiple bidders at auctions, and a notable upswing in clearance rates with many properties selling before auction day.

• An increase in Sydney sea changers purchasing for lifestyle.

• Investors have returned to the market this year, particularly for self-managed super funds.

10 Delicious Years

R&R Cafe’s Rowena and Rob Lisk

10 years ago, Helensburgh residents Rob and Rowena Lisk needed to find a commercial kitchen to accommodate their already well-established catering business. The couple found a location in Helensburgh and fitted out the kitchen. This location just happened to have a shopfront and R & R Café was born.

Although Rob had been a chef for 20 years, and Rowena had extensive hospitality experience from working at some of Sydney’s top restaurants and hotels, it was a little bit of an adventure into the unknown. “We expected it to bubble along nicely as our base, but to our surprise the café really took off” said Rowena.

“We put the success of R & R Café down to our relationship with the community. We hire local staff who often stay with us for a long time; we use local suppliers for all of our main produce, including Grima Bros., Helensburgh Butchery and Binner’s Farm.”

It’s no secret the odds are stacked against small businesses lasting the distance. A thankful Rowena acknowledged the hard work and commitment of her and Rob’s team and the support of local patrons.

“Our customers are what make it all work and many of them have become dear family friends.”

To thank the community for its support, R & R Café has over the years given much to local schools, charities and not-for-profit groups for their fundraising activities.

Bosch’s Top Apprentice Helensburgh resident and talented young mechanic, Tyler O’Meara recently took out the ‘Bosch’s Best Apprentice - 2012’ award across NSW and ACT. The award came as a real surprise to Tyler as his boss, John Hine of Helensburgh Car Services didn’t tell him he was nominated, later saying, “I nominated Tyler because I thought he deserved it, he works really well”.

When asked which areas Tyler has excelled in during his four year apprenticeship, John responded with “he is developing a real knack for diagnostics, but is an excellent all round mechanic.”

Tyler has also just completed a Cert IV in Automotive Diagnostics, is currently studying for a Cert III in Auto Electrical and along with the rest of the team at Helensburgh Car Services, has completed a course on ‘Hybrid and Battery Vehicle Servicing and overhaul’.

Tyler completed his apprenticeship in 2012.

YOUTH NEWS Holy Cross Happenings Holy Cross will join more than 216,000 students from across NSW and the ACT to celebrate the eighth annual Catholic Schools Week from 10 to 16 March. The State-wide initiative strives to build community awareness of, and the strength and distinctiveness of, Catholic schools throughout the country.

The event provides an opportunity for Catholic schools to showcase what is done every day in their schools and invite the community to experience teaching and learning at its best.

Parents, grandparents, parishioners and members of the community are invited to go back to take a peek behind the scenes to celebrate Catholic Schools Week on Wednesday 13 March at Holy Cross. Parents, invited guests and visitors will join in various activities to mark the special week and embrace this year’s theme ‘Every Child Counts.’

On Wednesday 13 March the school will open its doors with a Mass at 9:15 am in Holy Cross Church followed by classroom visits from 10:30 – 11:00am.

School Principal, Mrs Kerrin Cronin, said it is a great chance for people to venture back to school to see how students learn.

By Merle McPherson WELCOME BACK: Welcome back to all our students and families to another school year which is packed with lots of learning and a calendar full of exciting activities planned for our students. Also welcome back to Mrs Hebden after working as the relieving Assistant Principal at Thirroul Public School.

NEW KINDERGARTEN: The whole school community would like to welcome all our new Kindergarten students and their families to Helensburgh Public School. After their successful Orientation Program last year the students have started school confidently and happy, smiling faces are seen everywhere.

Our year 6 Buddy Program will be starting shortly. All year 6 students are assigned a ‘Buddy’ from Kindergarten who they can support throughout the year. The year 6 classes also join Kindergarten during the week and work on activities together. The ‘Buddy Program’ has been successfully running for many years and creates long lasting friendships with our Kinders feeling safe and secure in their new school.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD SPORT IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM: This is an exciting new program offered to our students which focuses on the development of gross motor skills and co-ordination. Each Thursday qualified teachers take groups of students and teach sporting skills and the rewards that can be experienced by playing sport and keeping active.

The students have really enjoyed this program so far.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL: What a fantastic day, weather was hot and just right for a swim.

All students had the opportunity to compete at their own level. Lots of cheering from the different houses could be heard encouraging the competitors. A great day was had by all students and parents who joined us. We now have many students representing our school at the Zone swimming carnival.

PEER SUPPORT TRAINING: All our year 6 students have just completed their Peer Support Training. They will lead a group of mixed students from each grade in a variety of activities focusing on ‘Values’ later in the year. They looked like they were having a great time and lots of fun during their training and will make wonderful leaders.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY HELENSBURGH DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Historical Society Meetings in January and February have put together a program of events involving opening to the public the Old Mine Surgery for Australian Heritage Week in April, National Family History Week in August and NSW History Week in September. The society will also hold displays at the Helensburgh Library for these events and the open days will be advertised.

The society has been working with WCC regarding the fate of the old Garrawarra Cemetery and up to only a couple of months ago we did not know how many people were buried in the cemetery.

Council has now obtained copies of the 5 burial registers from 1909 to 1949 and these are available at the Council’s Social History Library in Wollongong.

Amazingly there appears to be more people buried at Garrawarra Cemetery than in Helensburgh.

The society was very pleased to receive some of the missing letters from the old Helensburgh Station Sign that has been removed for repair. We are still missing 2 of the letters which can be left at the Old Mine Surgery, 78 Parkes Street, anonymously.

Time-Travelling Do-Gooders To Set Badly-Behaved Children Straight In Wollongong ‘He hadn’t gone a yard when – Bang! With open Jaws, a lion sprang…’

Cautionary Tales for Children is a new comedy musical for ages 8+, based on Hilaire Belloc’s much-loved early 20th century satirical poems about wayward children who receive their comeuppance in outrageous and humorous ways, not least of which includes a young boy eaten by a lion!

Performed by a comedic troupe of four travelling the world in their vintage time machine, is playing at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, Wollongong during the April school holidays on Tuesday 23 & Wednesday 24 April.

In the same tradition as Roald Dahl and Andy Griffiths’ stories, Cautionary Tales for Children questions the age-old belief that adults know best all of the time.

‘Hilaire Belloc’s poems have underscored childhoods for many generations and are beloved for their idiosyncratic and charming impropriety’ says Director Naomi Edwards. ‘In bringing them to life with music, we have amplified the satire, wit and joyful irreverence of each tale.’

Belloc’s wonderful wordplay was adapted by acclaimed comedienne Claudia O’Doherty.

Bringing the words to life is some of Australia’s best musical theatre talent: composer Mark Jones and performers Jolyon James (most recently the title role in the Cat Stevens’ musical Moonshadow), Sarah Ward (former Ring Mistress of Circus Oz) and Natalie O’Donnell (TV’s Lowdown).

CLUB NEWS Helensburgh VIEW Club The first VIEW Club luncheon for the year, together with the AGM, took place on February 19 at the Centennial Hotel. A new committee was introduced and members were welcomed back by President Jenny Donohoe, with a special welcome to new member Elaine, and visitor Barb from Alberta, Canada.

The program for the year will be a busy one, with excursions and fashion parades scheduled, along with special entertainment and speakers.

VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) is a leading women’s volunteer organisation and support network, which empowers women to have their voices heard on issues of importance for the future wellbeing of Australian society. It has a national membership of nearly 20,000 women drawn from all parts of Australia.

International Women’s Day on March 8 will be celebrated by VIEW with a dinner at NSW Parliament House, and the VIEW Club Convention will be held later in the year at

CLUB NEWS Fellowship Of First Fleeters

By Betty Warn I would like to tell you how my family came to Australia.

Mary, daughter of Ann and John Pardoe was baptised at Droitwich on March 8, 1772. Nothing is known of her early life but at the tender age of 17 Mary was tried and convicted of the theft of six shillings. She was sentenced to seven years transportation under the name of Barlow.

Women were not permitted to be held on the hulks moored on the Thames so they were collected from various gaols and placed on the ship ‘Lady Julianna’ ready for embarkation. This took several months but eventually the Lady Julianna with Mary and 226 other women sailed from Plymouth on July 29, 1789.

A quote from Steward John Nicol stated, “As soon as they were at sea every man on board took a wife from among the convicts – they loathe nothing”.

The Lady Julianna became known as ‘the floating brothel’ and the voyage to Sydney took just over 12 months. Long stays were made at each port where fresh food and water were obtained. This resulted in better health for most of the girls on board.

Mary had been chosen by Seaman Edward Scott as his partner and two days out of Sydney, Mary gave birth to a daughter she named Ann, in honour of her mother.

Ann was baptised at St Phillips Church Sydney on June 20, 1790. In August 1790 Mary and

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD Ann were sent to Norfolk Island on the vessel ‘Surprise’. While there Mary met Peter Hibbs, a first fleet sailor from the ‘Siruis’. Peter was a crew member when the Sirius was wrecked on Norfolk Island, although no records remain it is highly likely that Peter and Mary were one of the couples married on November 5, 1791 by the Reverend Richard Johnson. He had gone to the island to legitimise several unions and to baptise the babies born of these unions.

On June 27, Peter and Mary’s first child together George was born. No records of his death survived but it is believed he died in 1798 aged four years. As was the custom in those days the next son born on June 2nd 1800 was also named Peter.

Meanwhile Peter senior had received a land grant at Cascade Run. Peter farmed for some years and then decided to return to Sydney, a son named William was born on the voyage back.

Peter and Mary received land grants in the Hawkesbury area. On the 6th of February 1806 my ancestor Sarah was born. When she was 14 she married an Irish convict named Francis Byrne.

Ann Scott, Mary’s daughter had been raised by Peter Hibbs and was known as Ann Hibbs. She married John Izard, a convict who arrived on the ‘Perseus’ in 1802.

Richard, George, William and Peter completed the family. Mary died 19th of May 1844 and Peter died 12th September 1847, both are buried at Laughton Dale Cemetery.

SPORT We’ve Got Your Back!

By Elaine Bolton There are many products, books, treatments and exercise programs available that claim to fix a bad back or protect against lower back injury.

I have learnt through my own study and quest for answers to my own back problems that we are all individual. Some respond well to a particular approach such as Pilates or yoga, while others find these approaches make their back worse.

There are many variables to consider, such as back trouble history, age and exercise goals, so it’s really important to get an individual treatment plan.

The first step is to find a qualified health professional who can assess the causes of back pain and prescribe an initial treatment plan.

Many people with back pain either skip this step, and put up with the pain in the belief that nothing can be done to help them, or undergo this step but after the initial program is complete, return to their usual activities only to re-injure their back at a later date.

What’s missing are the later stages of building whole body and joint stability, increasing endurance and then building strength, power, speed and agility as required by the individual.

This can be achieved with a well-designed exercise program that progresses from rehabilitation exercises through to the level of performance required, whether it be for work, general health or sport.

In addition, there are a couple of myths surrounding lower back training that need to be addressed.

The first is regarding stretches for the lower back. Many people with back pain, stretch their lower back saying that it feels good. In many cases this can overload the tissues that support the spine (although there will be some who benefit from lower back stretches).

Bear in mind however, that no studies have shown that increasing back flexibility improves performance. The exception is where one side of the body is tighter than the other. While mobility is important, loose joints without controlled strength are unstable.

The second myth is that an exercise program using machines in a typical fitness centre will be adequate to get an individual back to playing 36 March 2013 Helensburgh & District Herald

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD sport or a physical occupation (including mothers of young children!). This approach has been borrowed from body building.

By isolating muscles, machines generally prevent motor learning and don’t train the balance or coordination required in daily activities, in addition to causing damaging overload to certain muscles. Many of these pieces of fitness equipment also require a sitting position.

The sitting posture may increase the bending loading on the back and is something many of us already do far too much. Instead, think of training movements not specific muscles and try to avoid high repetition of flexion exercises such as sit-ups.

The good news is that although joints may remain stiff, the pain doesn’t last forever. The changes that take place in the tissues may take years, but not more than ten and the elderly don’t often complain about back pain.

At Mind the Gap we prescribe exercises that spare your back. We also have a sign on the wall that reads along the lines of “Injuries happen sometimes, most often when we are impatient or in a rush. Slow down, ask for help or advice if required and leave your ego at the door”.

We are a friendly group who enjoy our bowling and would happily welcome anyone who would like to have a go!

These two blokes continue to improve with age and I hope I don’t come up against them in the match play.

Tang Nguen won a few coins for the babies’ money boxes and his father, Tung, became our newest member after he submitted his third card.

Welcome aboard Tung, I have a feeling you will be a quiet achiever during the championships There were some other good scores among a depleted holiday field but there was some talk of “swabbing” Terry Maney after his miserable Bradmans effort. He is a much better player than that and I hope our handicapper, Mick Carroll, is awake to his handicap manipulating antics.

My new style of shut your eyes and swing allowed me to win the February tournament for the first time in three years with a +4 score (**), edging out a rejuvenated Terry Maney in a count back. Paul Morahan came in third with a +3 and Mick Carroll won enough nearest the pin balls to open a sports store.

By Vicki “The Hair” Little Hi, I'm back on course ha-ha. Sometimes social engagements clash with golf which is a shame, but a girl has to do what a girl has to do!

Glad to see that the boys are still in fine form. We had 21 starters on Feb 3 and of course it rained, but made it very interesting.

Not for Johnny Brunsden who came home with 39 points - I think we might have another Jack Newton in our ranks. Bruce Richardson rocked this month with 38 points and a few other prizes - well done! Tony “Prez” came in with 37 Stapleford points and boy did we know about it!

It’s good to hear that Tony English will be back on track soon, slogging those little white balls like he does so well.

Our next golf game is on March 3 - it will be the start of matchplay, so get out there guys and start practising.

From the confused golfer: learning to play golf is like playing the violin. It’s not only difficult to do; it’s very painful to everyone around you.

Sea Eels Celebrating 25 Years of Winter Swimming Sea Eels Winter Swimming Club will this year celebrate 25 years of winter swimming.

First swim of the year is at Coalcliff Pool on April 7, commencing at 9 am followed by the Annual General Meeting at Helensburgh Stanwell Park Surf Club.

To participate, all you have to do is be capable of swimming 50 metres unassisted, and is open to both female and male competitors, whether members of a surf club or not.

All most welcome and events are handicapped.

Each swim includes a 50m sprint followed by a relay, and then it’s back to Stanwell Park Surf Club for hot delicious soup and other beverages if required, plus an occasional visit to Coalcliff Surf Club.

We have a fines master who will be willing take your change for sins committed on the day, but don’t be alarmed - all this money will go to the Cram Foundation, an organisation that caters for severely disabled people who will pay us a visit through the season.

The program for the year is as follows: first swim at Coalcliff Pool April 7, a visit by Cronulla RSL swimmers on Sunday April 21, celebration day for 25 years with past members attending, a visit by Bulli Sea Lions Sunday June 2, the South Coast Winter Swimming Association Championships Sunday July 14, and the Sea Eels Championships Sunday September 8. Also, those fortunate enough, will travel to Perth to contest the Winter Swimming Australia Association Championships.

Besides swimming in cool water, winter swimming is all about fun, comradeship and supporting those less fortunate than ourselves.
