Nathan Shoemark, Graham Opie from Motor Neurone Disease NSW, Nathan Johnston & Paul Smith
By Karen Lane Have you heard the optimistic notion ‘build it and they will come’? Well Helensburgh resident Nathan Johnston, a sight-impaired athlete, has gone one better with ‘build it and they will come running’. With the help of his organising committee led by Nathan Shoemark and Paul Smith, the two Nathans and Paul have successfully pooled
their time and talent and brought together a network of generous sponsors, colleagues and friends who’ve been well supported by an array of volunteers including Rural Fire Service, Surf Life Saving, police and nurses to create the ‘BURGH 2 BEACH’ Community Charity Run, proceeds of which go towards supporting the charity, Motor Neurone Disease (MND) New South Wales. 2508’s decades long battle between anti and pro-developers took a nasty turn on October 27 at a family event in Helensburgh with an alleged assault on Councillor Greg Petty. Cr Petty alleges he was kicked by an outspoken pro-developer while his back was turned. The alleged incident was immediately reported to an off duty Police officer. Sergeant Lawrie Drury said Cr Petty alleged an “assault whereby a male person known to Mr Petty attended his stall that was set up for the Fair in Charles Harper Park. The male person wanted a brochure that was available and when denied he went to grab one. “Apparently one of the brochures fell on the ground and when Mr Petty bent over to pick it up the male person kicked him. The matter is now being investigated by Police.

NEWS ‘Burgh2Beach A Big Success From page 1 Nathan J said, “I really wanted to bring awareness of MND to the community and help raise money for MND NSW”. Nathan’s dream finally became a reality on Sunday October 28 attracting 290 runners. After resting up from this year’s event Nathan and his team will be pulling out all stops to make it a yearly event. Nathan Shoemark agreed saying, “next time we are aiming for 1000 runners”. Graham Opie from MND NSW said, “80% of our budget comes from fundraising and events like this enable us to provide services like equipment loans. We now have one and a half million dollars worth of equipment available for loan”. The equipment includes communication aids such as lightwriters and walking aids, electric hoists and wheelchairs. Nathan J ‘walked his talk’ by participating in the charity run, and with some help from his running partner Mel, completed the run in under 40 minutes.
HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD Not a bad effort considering the winner of the event came home in the time of 26 minutes and 38 seconds. For further information on MND go to www. mndnsw.asn.au. or to prepare for next year’s charity run go to www.burgh2beach.com.au The results of this year’s charity race were first home in the fastest time was Blue Mountains man Michael Elliott from Glenbrook in the time of 26 minutes and 38 seconds. He was followed by local Stanwell Park lifesaver and boat-rower Chris Doran in 27 minutes and 20 seconds and in a very close third was Michael Lough from Cronulla in 27 minutes and 30 seconds. The first three ladies home were also hard to separate with Alisa Bateman from Thirroul first home in 29 minutes and 32 seconds just beating local Helensburgh lady Lexie Gilmour in 29 minutes and 44 seconds and Amy Curtis from Mascot came in third place with a time of 30 minutes and 11 seconds. Well done all!

Expert Panel Examines Local Cancer Cases By Angela Fagerstrom Statistically is seems, Helensburgh is OK and there is no evidence of an increased risk of cancer among the child population. Acting Director of Illawarra Public Health Unit (IPHU), Curtis Gregory released a statement on October 19 saying “These concerns were first raised in 2008 and since that time the Public Health Unit has monitored the occurrence of leukaemia both in Helensburgh and the broader Illawarra and Shoalhaven community”. Mr Gregory continued “To date, no evidence has been found of an increased risk or clustering of leukaemia in the 2508 postcode, which includes the Helensburgh township”. Councillor Petty responded to the IHPU statement saying “The problem with statistics by entire postcode is they are relatively broad. There are a number of villages in our postcode yet the reported cases of childhood cancer are all within a few blocks of each other.” Adding to the complexity of the issue is that the cancers are not the same type. Mr Gregory noted “Leukaemia and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma are different types of cancer and are unlikely to be caused by a single unusual environmental factor”. Yet just a few days after the initial statement from IPHU regarding Helensburgh, and after increasing pressure from the community and media attention, the IPHU announced on October 26 it is convening an expert panel comprising epidemiological, public health, clinical and environmental specialists to investigate the Helensburgh cancer cases. “Given the significance of this issue and concerns in the community it is vital that all of the findings are thoroughly examined to ensure that they are accurate and evidence-based” Mr Gregory said. “The expert panel will undertake this review as a priority and together with the Public Health unit, provide timely advice to the community in the coming weeks” concluded Mr Gregory. The reluctant public face of the issue is Helensburgh resident Diane Young, whose son Matthew (aged 9) is currently receiving chemotherapy for Burkitt’s lymphoma.
4 Helensburgh & District Herald
Diane said of the situation “The town has been amazing to our family. I searched my heart and knowing it won’t be universally popular I chose to speak out”. She added “If we do find something maybe we can help another family”. In the light of recent concerns, the Public Health Unit is obtaining the most current available Cancer Registry data to include nonHodgkin’s lymphoma and will continue to monitor this information. If parents or family members are concerned about an individual’s health or wellbeing they should consult their treating physician and/or oncologist. Anyone wishing to keep informed on IPHU’s progress can view information released at: www. islhd.health.nsw.gov.au or call 4221 6700.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD Billy Cart Derby After 25 years, the Port Kembla Billycart Derby is coming back to Wentworth Street in Port Kembla on Saturday November 17 with an all-time record of 118 entries in six divisions. 3,000 rally to protect H20, stop CSG! By Stop CSG Illawarra On October 21, following a slew of broken promises by the state government and a failure to rule out coal seam gas (CSG) development in drinking water catchments, people across the Illawarra took a stand. Just over 3,000 people rallied at Bulli Showground to spell out “Protect H20, Stop CSG!” The action followed similar mobilisations last year that called on the government to put a freeze on the CSG industry; to put science before development. In response to this widespread public concern, the New South Wales Government released its Strategic Regional Land Use Policy on September 11 this year; rules the public was told would protect land and water from the impacts of CSG development. Instead it is a policy to develop CSG – despite well-evidenced risks and enormous community opposition – and one that breaks promises made to the people of New South Wales. Before last year’s state election, the then opposition leader Barry O’Farrell promised to ban exploration and mining in drinking water catchments. He said “The next Liberal/National Government will ensure that mining cannot occur … in any water catchment area, and will ensure that mining leases and mining exploration permits reflect that common sense; no ifs, no buts, a guarantee.” In a December 1 interview Premier O’Farrell told 2GB’s Alan Jones: “I don’t intend to allow — particularly after the drought we went through over a decade — mining or any other activity to threaten water resources.” He also said “[CSG] exploration licences have been granted, in some cases permission to mine has been granted, in areas, frankly, that should never ever have been on the list.” The Coalition also promised to rule out mining in sensitive areas, to “provide certainty to local communities that cumulative impacts are being taken into account”, weigh the environmental, social and economic impacts of development, and require aquifer interference approval. The new rules show that these promises – quite clearly – were lies. Under the policy: • No part of NSW – not the land where food is C

grown, not drinking water catchments – has been ruled out to CSG development. • The test for aquifer interference has been downgraded to have no legal standing. Rather than requiring aquifer interference approval, the new rules offer an evaluation of the potential impacts on ground water systems “to be considered”. • A cost-benefit analysis and public interest test are not required. On the same day, the government also took further steps to pursue CSG development in the state. It lifted the freeze on fracking, which involves blasting large volumes of water, sand and chemicals into the ground to fracture underground systems. It also offered to renew 22 CSG exploration licences in NSW across 5 million hectares. Four of these are in the Illawarra, and include drinking water catchment areas. Dressed up in words like ‘protection’ these rules and changes are nothing short of betrayal. But the campaign across the Illawarra and the state is showing no signs of slowing. Locally, a freeze on the approved project has been won. And while it is past time a freeze on the industry and a ban in the drinking water catchment were reflected in policy, it’s clear the campaign must continueAdd andNov.pdf grow. 1 27/10/12 7:53 AM The price of the alternative is far too high.

NEWS / LETTERS TO THE EDITOR 2012 Milk Jug Exchange
Stanwell Tops resident Faye Cruickshank and support committee ladies have again this year hosted a glorious afternoon tea with all proceeds going to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Guests were asked to bring along a gift wrapped milk jug and during the afternoon’s proceedings at The Cliffhanger Café, Bulli Tops, the milk jugs (and many conversations) were exchanged. A concept as simple as a milk jug swap prompted much chatter and in some cases pure laughter. From elegant floral designs, to classic country kitchen jugs and (in my case) a cow that pours milk out its mouth! A delighted Faye remarked “ladies from all over the Sutherland Shire and Illawarra have brought together a happy day to spend over a scone and tea for the purpose of raising funds for the research unit at Westmead.” The October 13 milk jug exchange raised over $ 2,000 which was “a wonderfully kind and generous contribution from all of the ladies and young girls who participated in a fun afternoon for the benefit of others” said Faye. The Children’s Hospital at Westmead holds a research institute under the same roof as the hospital, allowing researchers to maximise their research efforts. If you would like to participate in next year’s event, please email Faye Cruickshank at; cruickshan@pacific.net.au “The tea party is a spa for the soul. You leave your cares and work behind. Massage without Manipulation
In addition to reiki therapy, Jasmine Sky offers the very visual ion spa detox treatments. “Negative ions are part of our electric energy balance, you cannot see them, but once absorbed are known to release endorphins and enhance our sense of wellbeing” noted Lee-Anne. In a 30 minute foot spa detox, the ion spa sends millions of negative ions into the body through the feet, to neutralise toxins absorbed in everyday life. The result can be quite confronting, with even seemingly healthy people emitting a peculiar sludge of toxicity. “The only thing you need to bring with you is an open mind” remarked Lee-Anne. Jasmine sky also stocks locally made Eco Aroma handcrafted candles and feather art. Jasmine Sky is located at Shop 4, 123 Parkes Street, Helensburgh Ph: 4294 8882 or 0407 166 259
There is more than one way to relax and improve your sense of wellbeing and local residents now have an opportunity to experience some alternative relaxation and healing techniques. Jasmine Sky is a specialist reiki and ion spa detox practice in Helensburgh. Owner/ practitioner Lee-Anne Preddy-Ryman has been a Reiki Master since 2005 and treats a wide variety of people with an even wider variety of ailments. Reiki is believed to have been around for many centuries, but was revived in the early 1900s by Japanese Buddhist, Dr Usui. This Japanese word is pronounced raykee and reiki energy is known as ‘universal life energy’. Reiki practitioners channel energy (usually) though their hands for mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health. “Unlike massage, people can be treated fully clothed, it’s like massage without manipulation” said Lee-Anne. “However the effects can be similar to massage and I encourage people to drink plenty of water afterwards.”

Pilates - Train your body to move well Pilates is a system of exercises which uses specialized equipment to target core muscle groups, improving strength and flexibility. It is a safe, effective and challenging way to stay at peak fitness while reducing the chance of injury or dysfunction. The Helensburgh and District Herald recently caught up with Lou Vote at her Pilates studio in Otford. Here Lou explained “there are so many reasons why people experience pain. Poor posture, old injuries that never fully recover, muscle over-use, prolonged sitting and incorrect (even harmful) exercise practices can all contribute.” “Mostly it’s a combination of all of the above that leaves us feeling worn out and wondering: What did I do to deserve this pain?” The equipment is designed to maximize the body’s efficiency without strain, Lou’s motto is “less is more.” Pilates is adaptable and suitable for all ages and exercises levels, whether you are an elite athlete

YOUTH NEWS Celebrating Child Care Week By Chelsea Ho The Happy Hearts Academy Early Learning Centre celebrated Australian Child Care Week during September 24 - 28. The theme based on Our Focus, Our Children highlighted the importance of child care programs for young children. The week of activities encouraged the children to gain “engaging and rich experiences” in their early years of life which will have beneficial attributes for their future. Child care is a great opportunity for young children to socialise with other children within their age group. Happy Hearts Academy Coordinator, Antoinette Holmes said “It was a successful week with wonderful participation”. Children and their families as well as staff and the community all supported the event. Antoinette says “The dedication of the teachers and carers is acknowledged for their part in assisting young children to develop with learning activities”. A range of insightful and fun activities was organised to help teach the young children to learn about the environment around them, as well
HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD as physical activities. An exciting visit was presented by farmers Genny and David from the Community Garden who spoke about their roles on the farm and what the farm produces. New experiences were provided for the children as the farmers lent their green thumbs to help plant seedlings in the centre’s new garden and taught the kids how plants grow. The children also enjoyed participating in yoga sessions and entertaining music demonstrations. The kids were able to explore their creativity and get busy with their crafty hands as they took part in art and craft activities. Antoinette says “At Happy Hearts we believe in high-quality learning for young children, and provide rich and meaningful experiences to help children develop, and prepare them for life”. The importance of learning for young children is valuable because it sets a foundation. The role that early learning centres play in the community becomes more significant as a greater understanding of early childhood learning is developed.

Students from Holy Cross Catholic Primary School entered this competition and the best three artworks from Yr 5 and yr 6 were selected for judging at the Wollongong City Gallery. Around 350 students, parents, principals, teachers and Catholic Education Office staff gathered for the presentation of awards and certificates and to hear from the judges about the works that were chosen to go on to Sydney for the next round of the competition. On the awards night there was a wonderful sense of joy and celebration as students delighted in viewing their own artworks hung in the gallery. The artistic quality of the works was inspiring and beautiful as students expressed understandings of their faith along with detailed written reflections which supported their artworks. The artworks ranged in style and media demonstrating wonderful creativity, artistic skill and individuality. The judges spent much time discussing the techniques, skills and meaning of each student’s interpretation of the scripture and artistic intention. The exhibition creates a greater awareness of the role of the arts in Religious Education. ‘Artistic Achievement’ awards were presented to all students on the night. Cashel O’Brien and Ben Corliss, Yr 6 students, were presented with Highly Commended awards during the ceremony. All artworks selected for the exhibition will be displayed in St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney from 2 December 2012 until Sunday 6 January 2013. This would make a great school holiday outing destination

YOUTH NEWS
Helensburgh Public School News By Lucinda Carter Relieving Assistant Principal Kindergarten Orientation Orientation sessions for Kindergarten will run from Friday October 19 until Wednesday November 24. If you have not already enrolled your child for Kindergarten in 2013, now is the time to do so. Enrolment forms are available at the school office. Stage 1 Excursion to Elizabeth Farm Year 1 and Year 2 have been studying people and places from the past. As part of the unit they visited Elizabeth Farm in Parramatta. They were guided through the two hundred-year-old house that was once home to Elizabeth and John Macarthur. They experienced the olden days where there was no electricity, and there were convict servants to do everything around the house and on the farm. The children visited the colonial kitchen which was separated from the rest of the house in case it caught fire.
Enrol Now For Kindergarten 2013
It is time to enrol for Kindergarten for 2013 if you have not done so already. Orientation is almost underway for all new students enrolled to start in 2013. Please come to the school after 10am any day if you need more information.
Enrolment forms can be downloaded from http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/gotoschool/ enrolment/parentsinfo.php Celebrating Our 125th Anniversary in 2012 Helensburgh Public School

This was to ensure that if the fire stove and oven exploded or went up in flames, the whole house did not burn down. It was a very different life to the one of today. The children also played old-fashioned wooden games such as hoops and skittles. They visited old-style bedrooms with four-poster beds and used washboards and cakes of soap to do the washing. They used feathers and ink to write, and visited the vegetable garden which was part of the farm that grazed over 2000 sheep in its prime. The farm’s main source of income was the meat and wool, from the sheep that grazed on the large acreage that is now part of Rosehill Racecourse and part of the M5 motorway. An enjoyable day was had by all. Fete update by Gina Krohn Our 125 Anniversary Fete was a great success and we are very pleased to say that we reached a fete record for our school, raising just over $21,000! We received wonderful comments about the day from those in attendance, including our many outside stallholders. Again, we would like to sincerely thank the wonderful parent helpers who gave us hundreds of volunteer hours, our very generous local businesses for their donations, and to the Helensburgh and wider community for supporting our school (since 1887!).

THE ARTS
HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD
Tales of Kabbarli A special showcase performance will be held at the Bushland Chapel, 94 Parkes Street Helensburgh on Saturday November 10 at 8pm. This is a new version on the well known play, and offers unexpected insights into the character of the legendary South Australian Daisy Bates, the wife of Breaker Morant. Early in the twentieth century Daisy Bates lived amongst outback Aboriginal tribes in particular at Ooldea in South Australia. Her character and life are iconic parts of Australian history. The play is a journey through language, image, place and ancient history with a lyrical, whimsical Irish sense contrasting with a fervent sense of injustice. This work is 60 minutes, developed from piece seen mid year. An audience Q and A will follow. In 2011, Robina Beard was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for Services to the Theatre, and a Lifetime achievement at the Australian Dance Awards.

CLUB NEWS Fellowship Of First Fleeters – South Coast Chapter By Betty Warn Matthew James Everingham was sentenced to seven years transportation on July 7, 1784 at the Old Bailey. He had obtained some books by false pretences and had attempted to sell them. Aged 15, he was sent to the Censor hulk, from there to Portsmouth for embarkation on the Scarborough as part of the First Fleet. On March 13, 1791 at Parramatta, Matthew married Elizabeth Rimes who had arrived on the Neptune. On July 18 the couple settled on 50 acres at The Ponds; the grant dated February 22nd 1792. Matthew was disheartened over sickness, crop failures and the death of his daughter. By October 1792, his farm had begun to prosper with acres sown in grain, fruit, vegetables, poultry; and two pregnant sows. “In three months”, he wrote, “I am able to maintain myself and family independent of the Public Store.” By 1795 he had purchased the position of Government Baker at Parramatta, although not a baker by trade. In October of that year, Matthew set off with William Reid and John Ramsay in an attempt to cross the Blue Mountains. They reached a point near Mt Tomah before turning back. At mid 1800, Matthew was shown as renting a farm at Field Of Mars, where he was a District Constable. He owned six pigs, four goats, had six acres in wheat and five more to be sown in maize. By 1806 Matthew had received a land grant of 50 acres at Sackville Reach. None of his family were on Stores and he employed a convict and a freeman. Here, on May 18th 1804, his farm was attacked by aborigines. Matthew, Elizabeth and one servant were wounded and their house was destroyed by fire. Matthew’s farms were frequently attacked by aborigines, he did however, survive the disastrous floods of March 1806. In 1808, Matthew signed an address thanking George Johnston for his stand against Governor William Bligh. It has been suggested he signed out of fear of reprisals and this may well be true. He was a very successful farmer and husband. He and Elizabeth he had 10 children, nine of whom survived.

Stanwell Park CWA Stanwell Park Country Women’s Association has a new member! To celebrate CWA Awareness Day on September 12, the Stanwell Park Branch recognised the many non-members who support our organisation and the CWA right throughout New South Wales. Stanwell Park Branch CWA appreciates the support we are given by many of the husbands of members and would like to honour one man in particular, who has worked behind the scenes for many years. In recognition of the support he gives to our branch, Stanwell Park CWA awarded an Honorary Membership to Charlie Cattell. Charlie can always be found working quietly in the background to support CWA at many of its functions - putting up tables, cooking hot dogs, directing traffic and yes, even washing up. Charlie says he enjoys helping and the interaction he has with the ladies of the branch. We thank Charlie and all the other men who assist us in our efforts! The Country Women’s Association of New South Wales was formed in 1922 out of concern for women living on the land, particularly in isolated areas. It was incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1931 and today boasts 10,500 members in New South Wales and the ACT in both urban and regional areas. The CWA provides a support network for women that encourages and fosters growth,

CWA members contribute to local communities in many diverse ways and continue to provide an invaluable link and service for country women. New members are always welcome. HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD
People Of Otford Revitalise Community Space Around A New Garden The Otford Community and Garden Association was created on June 12, 2012 by a small group of Otfordians having more than a few interests in common. What brought Adam, Andrew, Gaetane, Lucy, James and Phil together was both the interest in local food production and the desire to develop more community activities in Otford. They were looking for a piece of land where they could start a community garden and other recreational activities. Pauline Lacelles-Smith, who runs Otford Tennis Club heard about their project, and supported the group by letting then access the Tennis Club House, while Wollongong Council received with great interest their new application to use the community land next to the tennis court. Since then, the Association has grown from strength to strength and now counts twenty families (fifty people in total, including kids) as members. “Otford recently welcomed a dozen new families like us. The inauguration party was a wonderful day attracting the new and the old generation of Otfordians who were finally able to meet. Andrew and I left the busy city unsure about what we would find in the bush – I should say forest – and we are now so happy to be part of such a vibrant community in a wonderful area” says Gaetane, Chair of the Association. James, an enthusiastic gardener, and Adam, passionate about permaculture, started to design a possible garden. Greg, a local seed saver, naturally became the local seed supplier and adviser. After having a few working bees, potatoes, kale and spinach have now started to grow. The garden is built from recycled and donated materials, including wooden pallets and sleepers. More ideas came with Phil and Andrew looking after the recreational activities, with planning for a Pecha Kucha speech night and a brewers’ club underway. Lucy, a photographer and designer helped with logo and poster design, while Gaetane looks after the electronic communication and the coordination. With the arrival of a few newborns in the winter of 2012, the idea to create a parents’ group around the garden also came to life, and parents now meet every Thursday morning.
The forthcoming annual general meeting will be an important step, and we’ll be very happy to welcome new blood into the management team” says Gaetane. To do so, the Committee has decided to make this AGM another opportunity to celebrate and enjoy this new communal space. Adam and James are also very enthusiastic about the huge potential to grow food and to design a great community garden in this space. “This land has very good sun exposure, access to water, terraces to embellish and fences that can act as vertical garden walls” emphasises Adam. The Association’s meeting, scheduled for Saturday November 24, 2012 from 4 pm, will just be one part of a bigger fundraising event with music, curry, raffle, movies, circus, and gardening. The Association is dedicated to boosting community spirit through gardening and other social activities. It is open to any Otfordians and locals who want to be involved and support this project. If you are interested, you can consult their website and don’t forget to stop in at the tennis court area on November 24. SPORT Stanwell Scramble Helensburgh Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club is hurriedly trying to put together a soft sand beach run event towards the end of the year. Known as the Stanwell Scramble, the club will be organising a 2km run/walk, 6km run and a 75m skins type sprint event. It is hoped the event will be run as a twilight event just before Christmas with a date soon to be locked in - but most likely Sunday December 23, at 5.30pm The event will cater for all ages and fitness levels from those that just want to run or walk the 2km to achieve there fitness goal to the more serious runner that will do three full laps of the beach in the 6km run - a hard but ultimately rewarding challenge for anyone. Once the longer races are over, all eyes will head to the sprint track where a test of endurance and speed will be on show. Anyone can enter this skins type sprint race over 75m with the gun firing every 60secs and the last few in each race eliminated until we are left with one winner. We are hoping to attract a range of people from the community to compete in this inaugural event whether they are serious competitors or just doing it for their summer fitness campaign. It will be a unique event where the whole family can come along and participate at their own pace! With its closeness to Christmas, we are encouraging people to come down and enjoy the Christmas carnival atmosphere as there will be plenty of things happening in and around the surf club. More details to come in the December HDH.

SPORT Helensburgh Women’s Bowling Club Report By Beatrice Gallagher, Publicity Officer Our ladies meet at the Workers Club each Tuesday morning at 9:30 am. We are a very sociable group who enjoy our bowling for the exercise and the company, so if you would like to meet some new friends, come along! Lenore Bartlem, our secretary, can be contacted on 4294 1472 if you would like more information. September 25: Trying something a little different today, we played social games of consistency in pairs. At the end of the day, Elaine Smith and Helen Hayes had a win, with Janet Smith and Carol Dixon r/up; Ann Jackson and Pat Watts drew against Robyn Single and Shirley Cassidy/June McCotter. Congratulations ladies. From all reports they were very enjoyable games. Ann Jackson took home the daily prize and Janet Smith the fruit and vegies.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD October 2: Playing pairs today, Wendy Britten and Shirley Cassidy won their game over r/up Pat Watts and Robyn Smith. Carol Dixon and Robyn Single drew in their game against Ann Jackson and June McCotter. The daily prize was won by Elaine Smith and the fruit and vegies by Robyn Single. October 9: A very special day today as we competed for the Charman Shield in honour of Greg Charman, on this his 25th anniversary. We were so fortunate with the weather, experiencing bursts of cloud, a few winds and some sunny patches but the rain kept at bay until we were off the green! Maybe Greg arranged that for us! President June McCotter very proudly welcomed to lunch John and Dulcie Charman, along with other members of the family including twin brother Rodney, brother John, sisters Barbara and Betty, daughter-in-law Bronwyn and grandson. Thanks to Carol and Wendy for supplying the wonderful sandwiches, President June for the fruit, and a bowls lunch would not be complete without Wendy’s cakes and slices to finish it off! After lunch, Rodney spoke on behalf of the family, thanking the Women’s Bowling Club for their continued support of this day. He made the presentation to the winning pair Wendy Britten and Elaine Smith and to the r/up Carol Dixon and Robyn Smith, who were very happy to receive their gifts. Wendy and Elaine’s names will be engraved on the shield. Wendy mentioned that winning this shield game was something that had eluded her throughout her bowling years, so she was most pleased with the win. Carol Dixon took home the daily prize and also the vegies...what a double – she also managed a little pile from bingo. I think next year Bronwyn will bring a big shopping bag...she managed a very tidy pile of goodies from bingo! With Christmas almost here, we will be looking forward to our Christmas Party in December. The green will be closed from October 28 2012 for maintenance and will remain closed for 6-8 weeks. During this time we will catch up at the Club every couple of weeks. I would like to thank the ladies who keep details of the games and pass this information on to me, so that I can write up results covering the days that I am working or away.

SPORT Awesome Abs By Elaine Bolton In gyms across the country, people will be madly doing sit-ups to get a six-pack or even just toned abdominals to show off at the beach this summer. While sit-ups certainly work the “sixpack” muscles and have their place in exercise programs of those involved in contact sports or work, such as football players and the military, excessive sit-ups can lead to poor back health, especially in those who already have a hunched posture from sitting down too much. So how do you best train the abdominals or core so you can have great back health and look good at the beach this summer? The main role of the abdominals and core is to support the spine. The core muscles include those that attach to your hips, pelvis and lower back. This includes a wide range of muscles, including all the abdominals, the muscles that flex and extend the hip, the inner thigh muscles and the gluteals (buttocks), as well as the muscles of the spine that control extension, side bending and rotation. These muscles work to reduce movement of the lumbar spine (lower back) when it faces a challenge. These muscles usually work automatically in a fit healthy individual with no history of injury, however, a number of things can make the spine less stable, such as injury, arthritis, weakness in key muscles, unbalanced strength in opposing muscles, poor coordination in the core muscles or simply that the muscles don’t work as they are supposed to. This can leave the back susceptible to injury. Imagine carrying a child on your shoulders on a bushwalk. As the ground is uneven, every step you take shifts the load and if they are anything like my kids, they don’t sit nice and still. Something as simple as this can lead to a back injury in someone with poor core control. The exercises that develop good core control can be divided into three categories. Static Stabilisation - exercises like the plank where the body is held in a single position against the force of gravity. Dynamic Stabilisation - here the spine is kept neutral while the centre of gravity moves away, like a Swiss Ball roll out, with the elbows resting on the ball and the feet on the floor. Integrated Stabilisation - these exercises work the bigger prime mover muscles but also work the core. For example, holding a dumbbell
in one hand and then doing a squat. While the legs develop more muscle and strength lifting a heavier weight across both shoulders, the core is challenged by the unbalanced load. This is much more like a situation you would encounter in everyday life or sport. The greatest benefit comes with doing these exercises as part of a progressive program that gradually increases the challenge of the exercises. It is also important to ensure that the exercises are carried out with perfect technique. Doing these exercises will not however guarantee you have great looking abs at the beach this summer. Those abs won’t be seen without cleaning up the diet. In addition to good nutrition, make sure you get enough sleep and get to bed at the same time each night if possible. Lastly, get moving more and moving more often. Elaine Bolton is an experienced Personal Trainer and CrossFit Instructor at Mind the Gap Yoga & Fitness. Conquer Cancer Ride Completed By Narelle Jenkins You may have seen other articles in the Herald over the past months, telling of the fundraising efforts of six local riders from Helensburgh Off Road Cycling Club who have been raising funds for The Chris O’Brien Lifehouse at RPA, a cancer research and treatment facility being built at RPA (Royal Prince Alfred Hospital). These donations went to Lifehouse at RPA via a single fundraising event: The Ride to Conquer Cancer. Narelle, Christina, Nathan, Dave, Doc and Taggy wish to thank our community and especially our local businesses for their outstanding support, and also give you some feedback on the event. We believe that without the local business support our efforts would have been vastly minimised. Our club members were another backbone to our final outcome. 1,623 riders participated on October 13 and 14, leaving Sydney Olympic Park at 6:45 am, riding to Camden, sleeping in two man tents overnight and then returning to Sydney Olympic Park via a

different route. As a whole, Lifehouse at RPA raised over $5.7 million. This is an Australian record for a single fundraising event. We have been fundraising for about five months and another rider, Tony, got on board closer to the event. Between the seven of us we raised over $46,000, which was far beyond our expectations. There’s not one of us that is comfortable asking others for money, so our journey was tough on two fronts – fundraising and riding 200 kilometres over two days. At the finish line we were a bit sore but we all had smiles from ear to ear. We would also like to acknowledge the fantastic crew (and there were loads of them) including at least two from Helensburgh – Philippa and Mel. Volunteers for the crew also had to raise money and they were a fantastic support for all riders over the two days. Thanks again Helensburgh and surrounding communities.

Surfboat Report By Mark Lea The Helensburgh Stanwell Park surfboat crews have been back training for the past two months in preparation for another big season. Building from the great season they had last year, the Club has retained most of the rowers and picked up a couple of newcomers as well. All crews have been training hard to be ready for the first surf carnival of the year at Kiama in early November. This season, we will have crews competing in Reserve Grade, Open Women, 2 x u/19 Men’s Crews and we are looking for two more rowers in the u/23 Men’s Crew. This year, our Australian Champion u/23Women’s Crew from last season has made the step up to the Open Division. The girls have been training well in preparation for the world titles to be held at Christies Beach, South Australia on the weekend of November 17-18. With the generous help of our sponsors, the girls’ crew has also gained selection into the Ocean Thunder Professional Surf boat Series. Ocean Thunder is a summer series of high-profile
HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD professional surfboat events, restricted to 24 Elite Open Men’s Crews and 12 Elite Women’s Crews, created especially for television viewing with a format that is extreme, impactive and entertaining: racing off the beach, through the elements of the surf break, return back for a beach run finish. Thank you to our Ocean Thunder sponsors Peabody Energy, Tri Clark Brothers, Brienen Environment and Safety, Illawarra Bathroom and Building Services and Eco Logical Australia, for supporting the girls in this high-profile event. The Reserve Grade and the Open Women’s crews had a good hit out at the 12 km Roosters River Run Surfboat Marathon held on October 13. The boys rowed well and finished 2nd in their division, a great result and hopefully a sign of things to come for them. The girls also rowed well to finish 4th in the women’s division. This was a good result for them as one crew member was away overseas and we used one of our beach sprinters to fill in for the race. I don’t think she knew what she was in for, swapping 100 metres sprints for a 12 km surf boat marathon, but she didn’t let us down, rowing like a seasoned veteran.

Sea Eels Season Wrap Up
By Karl Weber – Stanwell Park Sea Eels Well it is the end of another season of winter swimming. Most Sundays that we swam were beautiful, whether they were at Coalcliff Ocean Pool, Wollongong Continental Baths, Gunnamatta Bay or Bulli Ocean Pool. We had a successful year in 2012. We hosted the South Coast Winter Swimming Championships, competed against Bulli in the annual Jimmy Johns 42 Helensburgh & District Herald
Winner of the King Cup Ian Van Zyl explains his strategy to Chief Fine Master Rod Hampson and Club Secretary Phil Kelly
Trophy Swim, enjoyed Cronulla’s Gunnamatta Bay Swimming Club hospitality, hosted a successful Cram House Day and travelled to Queensland to compete in the Australian Winter Swimming Titles. Not bad huh?
SPORT The Australian Titles were held in Southport, Queensland in late September. Stanwell Park Sea Eels did the region proud, placing in the top 50% of teams, even going within seconds of taking the title for the nominated team relay. Considering the winners got within 0.10 of their nominated time, it was a real achievement to not only be in the mix, but to come so close. From all reports, it was a mighty celebration and the Sea Eels who made the journey north represented the club and region with pride. The final 2012 Sea Eels Championships were held the week before the Australian titles. This was the final club swim and it was a great party that was more about having a laugh than serious competition. That being said, the hotly contested Slippery Eel trophy once again lived up to its reputation of being the blue ribbon event of the club's season. In order to compete, swimmers need 100% attendance and need to swim closest to their handicapped time without breaking. If that doesn’t sound tricky enough, they also need to touch the wall before other swimmers so they can maximise their chance of winning. This year’s winner was Neil McGuiness.
HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD Other major prize winners included: • Club Person of the Year - Barry McGuiness (Club Captain) • King Cup Overall Pointscore - Ian Van Zyl • Endurance Cup 100/200m Pointscore - Barry McGuiness • 12 swimmers gained 100% attendance because they turned out for every Sunday swim • Over 60s winner - Peter Turner • Over 50s winner - Barry McGuiness • Over 40s winner - Karen Burke • Over 30s winner(s) - Murray Copas & Karl Weber • Open women's winner - Karen Burke • Under 18s winner - Jared Kennedy • Under 14s winner - Neil McGuiness • Special thanks to our head time marshal Stephanie McGuiness who is currently overseas helping establish Surf Life Saving in Vietnam WOW! So that wraps up another season. Thanks to all of our sponsors, Coalcliff and Stanwell Park Surf Clubs for hosting us through the season, Helensburgh Workers Club for hosting our Cram House Day and Bulli Workers Club for hosting our South Coast Presentation and afterparty. Remember the summer is a really good time to start training for the winter, so if you are thinking of joining us at Coalcliff Pool next year, please do so. Everybody is welcome, so keep an ear out for our starting date. Over the summer, we will be helping to host regular Friday night festivities at Stanwell Park Surf Club. For those who don’t know, the clubhouse is now open for families who want a cool drink and a light meal on a Friday night. It opens at 6 pm and closes at 10 pm. It might just be the only bar that serves Tooheys Old between Heathcote and Coledale, but if that is not to your taste, then there are a wide range of refreshments that would satisfy even the most discerning palate. All are welcome. Best wishes for the festive season and see you in 2013 - 'Feel the Eel'.

Sunday Social Golf Club By Vicki “The Hair” Little Vicki “The Hair” is back from the secret assignment to report about Kevy “Cyclone” Brown, this month coming from an underdoggy to top dog, and don’t we know it! Kev was on a roll, winning the day on 42 points. We were lucky to have Norm, Brenda Bell and Norm’s famous coleslaw to present the plate they donated. We now have Kevy’s name on the plate which is another thing for him to brag about. We played survival ball which I’ve told you about before. That little green ball you are not allowed to lose; very nerve-racking when it’s your turn. You can guess that Kevy’s team took it out as well. Partners were “Goose” Gersback, Dave Murray and Dave Flewin. They each received a pack of fine wine. They probably went home and sculled it after putting up with “Browny” gloating all the way around. Can you believe Kevy and Dave Flewin played match play and I’m not writing his name again!
The final Stableford is played next month between “You know whose handicap will be slashed” (Kevy) and Travis Chipperfield. We did have other players on the day: Matty Green was 2nd on 41 points, winning the Heritage Cellars voucher, Dave Morris 3rd placed, with 37 points, winning a voucher for a free game of golf. Our days are warming up. If you want to have a game and a bit of fun, come along on the first Sunday of the month. Our next game is on November 4, and then it’s our end of year golf party. Who can believe Christmas is nearly here. The Confused Golfer: Golf is the cruellest game, because eventually it will drag you out in front of the whole school, take your lunch money and slap you around!
You are welcome Each Sunday at 9.30am 6/17 Cemetery Rd, Helensburgh
