‘Burgh2Beach Charity Race

By Nathan Shoemark and Paul Smith Late last year, Helensburgh resident and sightimpaired athlete Nathan Johnston came up with the idea of a charity run from Helensburgh to Stanwell Park Beach. Nathan’s concept was for this fun run to start in Helensburgh, proceed down into the rainforest community of Otford, up to scenic Bald Hill lookout, and from there travel down Lawrence Hargrave Drive into the surf community of Stanwell Park.

The race will then lead on to Stanwell Park Beach. After a gruelling run along the soft sands of the beach, the race will finish in front of Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club.

Nathan believes the 8 km race will be “challenging”, but in turn will showcase the truly wonderful features of Helensburgh, Otford and Stanwell Park communities, and pay tribute to an event of the same name last held in 1984.

A committee of local residents was established to help Nathan turn his concept into a reality, and the 2012 ‘Burgh2Beach’ fun run was born.

All funds raised on the day will go toward the group’s designated charity – Motor Neurone Disease.

Nerve cells (neurones) control the muscles that enable us to move around, speak, breathe and swallow. Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is the name given to a group of diseases in which the neurones fail to work normally so that the

muscles gradually weaken and waste. There is no cure for MND and eventually this debilitating disease will claim the life of the sufferer. Whilst MND is uncommon, unfortunately it is by no means rare, with over 1400 people diagnosed with MND in Australia.

The charity race will be held on Sunday October 28, 2012 with a group start at 8 am.

Registration is $30 and can be completed right up to midnight on Friday October 26. Participants can also register on the day between 6:30 and 7:15 am for $40. A race briefing will be conducted at 7:45 am.

Vale HOGARTH, Robert Martin. (Bob) Mr Robert Hogarth passed away on September 22, 2012 following a long battle with cancer, he was 82 years old. Mr Hogarth was farewelled by friends and loved ones at a ceremony held at Woronora Crematorium on Wednesday September 26.

Lions’ Annual Country Fair

By Gina Krohn Once again, your local Lions Club brings you a day of family entertainment, food and interest with the Annual Country Fair, Saturday 27 October in Charles Harper Park from 10am.

Celebrating the Stars in our Community, we invite you to visit the NINA stall, have a chat to our local Rural Fire Service and give a big wave to the Highway Patrol as they direct the Grand Parade at 4pm!

If you are an elderly resident with no access to transport, contact NINA and they’ll arrange to get you to the Fair. That’s why they’re stars!

The park will be jam-packed with a wide range of stalls, giving you terrific pre-Christmas shopping opportunities, so come and check out who’s new this year.

We also have new rides, including the mini jeeps which were a huge hit at the recent Helensburgh Public School fete, and the popular dog wash is back.

$3.8million Bald Hill Plan On Exhibition After spending sixty thousand dollars with consultancy firm Arup to hold two design charettes to formulate a plan for the Bald Hill reserve, it seems council has learned what most residents already knew, with the results of consultation indicating the vast majority of people want the site to remain ‘bald’.

The $3.8million draft Bald Hill masterplan has now been released for six weeks public consultation after council voted unanimously to seek public feedback on the draft proposal.

Moo Needs You Most locals know only too well, that popping into Bi-Lo simply for bread and milk usually turns into a lengthy exercise once you have chatted to friends, colleagues and faces you have not seen for a while. It comes as no surprise then, that the sense of community is also strong among the Bi-Lo staff.

The team recently learned that one of their recent colleagues Di Young had received heartbreaking news that her son Matthew (Moo) aged 9, had been diagnosed with an uncommon and sometimes aggressive form of cancer called Burkitt’s Lymphoma. A group of Bi-Lo ladies reached out to the Young family’s friends and their wider community to do what they could to help the family during this challenging time.

Matthew is being treated at the Centre for Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders at Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick. Intensive chemotherapy will be needed for around six months, to see Matthew return to playing in the school grounds at Helensburgh Public School where he is currently in year four.

Families dealing with a serious childhood illness not only have the pressure of seesawing emotions, but are often faced with financial difficulties. A child requiring chemotherapy treatment needs full-time care, and this often means that one or both parents reduce work hours or stop working altogether to be by their side.

boy. Understandably this puts more pressure on the family at a time they need it least. Matthew’s dad Stuart continues to work but no doubt feels the strain of balancing hospital visits and work, as well as being there for Matthew’s older brother Ben. “We have not heard anything or received any financial help from the Government” said Di. “Over the last six weeks or so we have been reliant on the generosity of a few friends and Helensburgh – you just can’t plan for this.”

To consolidate Helensburgh’s generous support and to celebrate Matthew’s progress, a fundraising event is organised for Saturday October 13 at Helensburgh Workers Sports and Social Club.

The fundraising evening kicks off at 7.00 pm and features entertainment by local legends Ray Beadle and Darren Coggan – who will perform together for the first time!

This fundraiser promises to be a fabulous night out and will include a live auction of some amazing donations (including 5 nights’ accommodation in a Balinese villa), a major raffle (tickets sold on the night) as well as the draw for the grocery hamper.

And not forgetting, if long-time Bi-Lo employee Britta , is sponsored for $2000 or more, she will shave off her hair on the night!

NEWS Scarborough Art Show The 14th annual Scarborough Art Show returns on the 6th and 7th October 2012.

Works Begin On Roundabout Council staff have begun work on construction of a roundabout, pedestrian refuges, drainage and an extension of the shared path in Parkes Street at the corner of Parkes Street and the old Princes Highway, Helensburgh. The work is expected to take three months and Council has budgeted $466,000 in the 2012/2013 financial year for the construction.

The roundabout and pathway extension will improve traffic and pedestrian safety in Helensburgh.

Council suggests that community members use the alternate routes such as Walker Street or Cemetery Road to exit and enter Helensburgh.

Delays in the area around the intersection may be experienced during the construction. Council apologises for the disruption.

NEWS One Of Helensburgh’s Oldest Historic Icons Vandalised The Helensburgh station sign on the original station platform has been removed to a safe location following the theft of five of the metal letters making up the word Helensburgh. The backboard has been damaged and will require significant repair. The sign, measuring 4.5 m by 60 cm, is the only surviving sign of those installed on the original platform when it was opened in 1889.

Allan House, on behalf of Helensburgh Landcare and the Helensburgh Historical Society, said “it is gutwrenching to see this sort of theft and vandalism to one of Helensburgh’s oldest historic icons. I hope that whoever did this has the decency and respect for Helensburgh’s heritage to at least return the metal letters. They can be left anonymously at the Old Mine Surgery, 78 Parkes Street, Helensburgh.”

Asked about the future of the sign, Mr House said “we’ll have to weigh whether it’s worthwhile to restore and return it to the site. We know a lot of

Dear Editor, The deadline for submissions for the rezoning of non urban lands around Helensburgh October 5, although there is a short period of grace is available for late submissions. Any resident of this area who has not made a submission is urged to immediately, and support the main plans by Council. Do not leave this matter for someone else to do – put it as a matter of priority.

It is easy to email council at records@ wollongong.nsw.gov.au , putting “Proposal for the former 7d lands at Helensburgh, Otford and Stanwell Tops” as subject line, and including your name and address in body of mail. You can also write to Wollongong City Council, Locked Bag 8821, Wollongong DC NSW 2500. You do not need to say much.

The non urban lands surrounding Helensburgh Otford and Stanwell Park are divided into 13 smaller areas or precincts. Despite disagreements on some areas, the recommendations on exhibition have on the whole received overwhelming support even consensus last November from councillors – from Liberal, Labor and independent groups. They have the best chance of being passed this year.

The easiest thing to do is say you support all zoning recommendations for all areas – with one important amendment, and that is that the areas of Walker street south of cemetery roads (called the Walker street precinct) be given E3 classification – offering improved environment protection that would still allow existing uses to continue.

One way or the other it is important for every person to write, and encourage others to do so – and support the council. Let the residents be heard.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD Blackwell Bros Keep On Truckin’ Despite a challenging year for Helensburgh’s Blackwell Bros, the boys are again gearing up for the Illawarra’s largest one day fundraiser – Camp Quality’s Convoy for Kids.

Now in its eight year, the Convoy will take place on November 18 – with thousands of trucks and motorbikes starting their journey at Appin Colliery.

In 2011 Blackwell Bros raised around $20,000, giving them the privilege of being one of the convoy leaders. “Helping kids fight cancer has and continues to be close to our hearts” said company spokesperson and Director Adam Blackwell.

“Our efforts are not bad for a family company from the ‘Burgh” said Adam. “We hope to see a lot of locals waving to the convoy on our way to the family fun day at ( the Croome Road Sporting Complex) Albion Park.”

Raising Hope…

By Terri Ayliffe from Zeality It is every parent’s hope that our children grow into functional, happy adults. It is also our hope that raising them to this point will not be too difficult on us, their parents/carers or guardians.

There is far more possibility of our children fulfilling our hopes for them, than there is of getting them to adulthood without feeling some personal strain.

Raising children can be difficult. The amount of wisdom we need to impart, the lessons we need to teach, the guidance we need to provide and the concern we feel when our children make errors of judgment, all come together to create a melting pot of issues. Add to this the numerous external factors in our children’s lives and we have much to contend with.

It is helpful to understand that no matter the number of external influences, the greatest influence on our children will be us. Children learn by modelling, that is, they watch and learn from the influential adults in their life.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD So it is our reactions, emotions and behaviour that have the greatest influence, not only on our children, but on our interaction with them.

This is good news because it means that if we have an understanding of our own emotions and accept the fact that we are influential, we can employ thoughtful action which will influence our children in a productive way.

Raising children can be all the more difficult when it is done in isolation. We can feel isolated if we believe that the issues we have in our own homes are unique. Every home I walk into and every family I meet has similar concerns and similar issues to contend with.

In more primitive cultures (I use the word primate for lack of a better word) a child is born into the village rather than a family. Care and discipline of the child is the responsibility of every member of the group. In this circumstance, the pressure to raise the child to be an affective member of the village is shared by many.

We all understand that our culture does not work in quite the same way, but that is not to say we cannot be there as support for each other during the difficult years.

Of all the stages our children go through perhaps the most difficult is the adolescent years.

It is at this time that external influences appear to have a larger effect than we do. When our children are small, life is predominantly about practicalities such as food, clothes, school etc.

While there is a good deal of emotional content to contend with, it is far less than the emotional and cognitive issues of adolescence. I remember feeling my influence slipping in these years, and I recall the shift from needing to provide the practical elements of their lives to providing emotional guidance.

In the interest of the village, the parents, and the children, we will be offering parent groups aimed at specific ages. In these sessions we can discuss issues relating to raising our children, and I will provide you with helpful tips and skills to assist you in raising that functional and happy adult you are hoping for.

Diet & Your Mental Health

By Alison Rowe, Child & Adult Psychologist It is common knowledge that the food you consume plays a vital role in maintaining your physical health but very few people consider the impact it has on their mental health and general wellbeing. There are some specific nutritional strategies that can help improve your mood, maintain healthy brain functioning and help with mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and other related disorders. It is important that your diet is in accordance with The Dietary Guidelines for Australian Adults: • Consume only moderate amounts of food containing sugar as high sugar foods lack essential nutrients, are high in fat and kilojoules so lead to weight gain thus negative affect and low self esteem. It causes an initial surge of sugar into the bloodstream but the effect soon wears off leaving you feeling fatigued and low. Therefore, fight the temptation to consume chocolate and sweets in afternoon to increase motivation because it actually does the opposite.

• Eat regular meals throughout the day to stabilise blood sugars and your mood. Always consume breakfast so that you start the day in a positive, optimistic mood.

• Limit caffeine intake as it increases anxiety and contributes to insomnia.

• Limit alcohol intake as it is a depressant and heavy drinking can contribute to depression or make it worse. Moderate levels can interact with the effectiveness of antidepressant medication.

• Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration as even mild dehydration can affect your mood, increase irritability and restlessness. It can also alleviate the side effects of medication such as dry mouth and constipation.

• Limit saturated fats and moderate total fat intake to help control your weight as weight gain can be a side effect of medications and impact negatively on your mood and self appraisal.

• Ensure that you include reduced fat milks, yoghurts and cheeses in your daily diet. They are full of nutrients and ready to eat so beneficial for people experiencing loss of motivation and appetite or weight, that is, sometimes a symptom of some mental illnesses. A warm milk drink before bed can induce sleepiness because it contains tryptophan.

• Eat a wide variety of nutritious food to stimulate interest in food when appetite is poor.

• Eat plenty of vegetables, legumes and fruit as some of these foods are good sources of folate, such as green leafy vegetables. Folate increases the effect of antidepressant medication.

• Include lean meat, fish, poultry and /or alternatives in your daily diet. High protein foods contain amino acids such as tryptophan and a steady supply of this to the brain enables production of serotonin that improves your mood. Oily fish (tuna, salmon, sardines, perch, herring) has good sources of omega-3 fatty acids so consuming 500 mg daily can prevent mental health issues. Consume 2-3 oily fish meals a week or one oily fish and one white fish with eggs, bread and milk.

• Eat plenty of wholegrain cereals (bread,rice,pasta,noodles) as they are good sources of fibre to prevent constipation, a common side effect of antidepressants.

Wholegrain cereals, fruits, vegetables and legumes have a low glycaemic index so the sugar in these foods is absorbed slowly into the blood stream optimising mental health.

SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL BUSINESS I Want My Money!

By Lynda Babister, Babister Legal Someone owes you money. You have sold him the item, or performed your part of the agreement. Or maybe they have damaged some of your property. But they haven’t paid you. What do you do, and how do you get your money?

The first step is to send them a valid invoice.

For an invoice to be valid it must contain your business name and ABN, the date, a brief description of what was sold including the quantity and price, if GST is to be paid and how much, and that it is a tax invoice.

If you are claiming for damages to your property, or some other “non-sale” claim you need to send them a letter with your contact details, a description of what you are claiming, and a request for payment. It is surprising how many people are not paid because they don’t make a proper request for payment, that is, they don’t actually ask.

If the invoice is not paid, you can either send a reminder, or a Letter of Demand. Which you choose will depend on your business style. If a reminder is ignored, you will be sending a Letter of Demand as the next step. A Letter of Demand is not a Court document, but may be a precursor to one. A Letter of Demand identifies the debt which is to be paid, gives a timeframe by which it is to be paid, and usually threatens to take Court action if it is not paid by the specified date. A Letter of Demand is also an opportunity for the debtor to contact you, and maybe negotiate a payment plan, or dispute the debt.

If the debt is not paid after a Letter of Demand, then the next step is to take Court action. The amount of the debt will determine in which Court the action is taken. The most common Court is the Local Court of NSW. You will need to prepare a Statement of Claim, which sets out for the Court exactly why they owe you money.

Depending on the nature of the debt, whether it has been part paid, or disputed, or is still accumulating, the Statement of Claim needs to set out all of those details. If you are unsure of what to put in, you should seek legal advice. The Statement of Claim then needs to be filed at the Court, and a filing fee paid.

Now comes the hard part – service of the Statement of Claim on the debtor. Many debtors

There are rules as to how a Statement of Claim must be served, and if those rules are not followed, then the debtor may claim they weren’t validly served. A Statement of Claim must be served within 6 months of filing, and must be personally served on the debtor.

The person serving the Statement of Claim must swear an Affidavit of Service describing when and how they served the Claim.

Once the Statement of Claim has been served, the debtor, who is now called the defendant, has 28 days to file a Defence. A Defence is their argument as to why they don’t owe you any money, or part of the money. If they do file a Defence, then further documents are filed, including Statements from any relevant person – witnesses, or employees. Then the matter will proceed to a Hearing, where each side’s argument is heard by a Magistrate who will make a decision about whether the money is owed, and/ or how much. They will also decide whether the losing party should pay the other party’s costs. If no Defence is filed within 28 days, then you can apply to the Court for a Default Judgment.

Once you have a judgment from the Court, either from a hearing, or default judgment, you are free to claim the money from the debtor.

There are a number of methods of collecting this debt, which will be discussed in a later article.

Holy Cross Happenings

By Jennifer Gaffney, Yr 5 Class Teacher Holy Cross girls are on their way to becoming Legends of League.

Girls from yr 5 and yr 6 at Holy Cross Catholic School competed for the Illawarra in the State Legends of League Carnival held at North Ryde.

They played three pool games against St George, Newcastle and Manly, winning their way to the finals.

The weeks of training in the lead up to the carnival, run by Mr Gaffney, paid off. They were well prepared and showed great commitment and skill in both defence and attack.

In the final against Parramatta the girls played with courage and commitment, losing 10-8, two tries a piece with only a conversion in it. Holy Cross finished third and were the best Country Girls League team in the state!

The girls had so much fun, meeting past and present legends of the game and learning skills they never thought possible (nor did their parents!). The girls are to be congratulated as is their coach Mr Greg Gaffney and the parents who leant their support.

By Lucinda Carter Relieving Assistant Principal Alicia McCormack visited Helensburgh Public School just after returning home from the Olympic Games in London this year. Everyone at Helensburgh Public School welcomed her at a special assembly. The children had lots of questions about her achievements not only at the London Olympics but in other sports she is involved with as well. All staff and students were extremely proud of her achievements. Alicia, a former student, also attended the Student Representative Council monthly meeting along with her bronze medal to show sharing lots of information to inspire the students at our school.

125th Anniversary Fete The school fete held on Saturday 15th September was an enormous success. It was organised by a very dedicated and enthusiastic parent committee who ran most of the activities on the day and raised around $22,000 for the school. The weather was beautiful and was supported by the staff and students who had lots

of fun in “the haunted house” and on many rides and craft stalls. There was a real buzz all day with all the hard work from staff and the parent committee paying off to make it a fun packed day for all of the community.

Grandparent’s Day Our annual Grandparent’s day was held on Thursday 13th September. The grandparents were given a delicious morning tea and were a lively audience to a Performing Arts Concert.

The school band and choir performed along with the senior dance group and public speaking finalists at our school. They watched a wonderful power point presentation of photos of events at the school and made visits to classrooms to visit their grand children. A fun day was had by all.

125th Anniversary Art Show A cocktail art show for adults only will be held on Friday 26th October. Children’s art work as well as some art from some very talented local artists will be on display with cocktails and nibbles available. Don’t forget to place this event in your diaries and come along and support your local school for our final 125th Anniversary event 2012.

The 7th Lawrence Hargrave Public Schools Memorial Kite Day The 7th Lawrence Hargrave Memorial Kite Day for Public Schools (in conjunction with the Lawrence Hargrave - Eric Waite Memorial Flyover) will take place on Wednesday November 7, 2012 at Stanwell Park.

The Kite Day is designed to be a living lesson which will bring to life the Hargrave story for the schoolchildren in attendance. On November 12, 1894, Lawrence Hargrave was lifted 16 ft off Stanwell Park beach while attached to four box kites and became the first man to achieve vertical lift-off. Hargrave’s inventions and experiments contributed significantly to the development of the first aeroplanes.

The day will commence at 11.00 am, with a one hour ceremony. The ceremony will include the taking of an oath of custodianship by local school students, who will pledge to maintain the memory of Hargrave’s achievements and to protect the Hargrave Memorials which commemorate him.

Patron of the event is high-profile media personality, author and journalist, Mr Peter FitzSimons, the author of Charles Kingsford Smith and Those Magnificent Men. Public school students will showcase their talents as part of the official ceremony as MCs, musical performers and actors.

The Lawrence Hargrave Flag will be flown down by skydivers and raised. Rare Lawrence Hargrave inventions including a radial rotary engine, a glider, box kites and curved wings (soaring machine) will be displayed by the Lawrence Hargrave Centre.

Following a lunchbreak, the 1000 students attending the day will move onto the beach to fly hundreds of kites, in a spectacular and colourful re-creation of the 1894 box kite flight.

Kite builder Richard Webb will attempt to recreate the actual Lawrence Hargrave Box Kite Flight using exact replicas of Hargrave's box kites.

At approximately 1.00 pm, The Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) will stage the Lawrence Hargrave - Eric Waite Memorial Flyover. Four aircraft, the Qantas “Connie” Super Constellation, a C47, a Neptune and a Drover, will complete several low level passes over Stanwell Park, as a tribute to the lives of Lawrence Hargrave and the late aviation historian Mr Eric Waite.

The Kite Day will end at 1.30 pm.

Over 1000 schoolchildren from the following schools will be attending: Scarborough PS, Stanwell Park PS, Bulli PS, Villawood East PS, Warwick Farm PS, Thirroul PS, Coledale PS, Mount Ousley PS, Otford PS and Mount St Thomas PS.

CLUB NEWS U3A Term Four Stanwell Park U3A Group Term 4 Program You don’t have to be a teacher, university graduate or professional to participate in, or attend U3A – but having an inquisitive, willing to engage mind will help you to enjoy the many talks on offer and the friendly camaraderie amongst our members and visitors.

Last term we saw an amazing DVD on the courageous and devastating life of convict Mary Bryant. Mary, her husband and five male crew members manoeuvred their tiny cutter to Timor through harrowing and dangerous waters and coastline.

They were welcomed by the Dutch Colony, not imprisoned but were feted until they were pursued by the Sydney Cove Colony. It’s well worth seeing.

Helensburgh View Club Save The Earth 1.03 SAVE THE EARTH 1.03 will be performed at the Bushland Chapel, Sunday October 28 at 7pm. “Save the Earth” is an inspired and thoughtful response of poetry and religious ideas to environment issues. It is a meditation, a space for reflection, and a call for action. The program features accomplished choreographer and dancer Lisa McDonell and outstanding cellist Ilir Merxhushi. The music of Messiaen, “Quartet for the End of Time”, will be used, along with text adapted from “Mass on the World” by Teilhard de Chardin. This is a multiform work with exquisite aerial video of the earth.

The work has previously been performed at Bondi Chapel by the Sea and the Wesley Church on the Mall, Wollongong. The program changes in every occurrence depending on location and artists involved, and will seek understanding and directions for responding to environmental needs, The program will run for 45 minutes with refreshment and discussion to follow. It was “all aboard” for another VIEW Club excursion luncheon, this time to the Fisherman’s Club at Gerroa, on a bright, sunny September morning. The weather forecast was for afternoon thunderstorms but the day turned out fine, and 15 members enjoyed their lunch of chicken and fish, dessert, tea and coffee, and good companionship.

Thank you to Marg who organised the trip, and to bus driver Dennis who also took the members on a tour around Gerroa and Kiama.

CLUB NEWS / SPORT Stanwell Park Festival Of Flight It’s that time of the year again. Come along and celebrate the Festival of Flight in Stanwell Park on Sunday 11 November 2012. Put this date in your diary now!

The Festival of Flight celebrates the historical significance of Stanwell Park as the “Birthplace of Flight” where Australia’s aviation pioneer Lawrence Hargrave became the first man in Australia to fly on 12 November 1894.

The festival marks this date with historical displays and flight related activities. It is a showcase for local talent with regular performances by singers and musicians throughout the day and an opportunity for some Christmas shopping at the market stalls.

The festival will commence at 10am at Stanwell Park Reserve with a variety of exciting activities. The Flighty Professor will be back with fun flight related activities and competitions for children. There will also be amusement rides to keep the young (and not so young) happy.

The Stanwell Park Branch of CWA continues to be the driving force behind this festival with support from Wollongong City Council. The CWA members will have delicious cakes, jams and plants to sell and can offer advice on gardening topics.

With over 60 market stalls, free entertainment and yummy food for sale it will be a fun day for the whole family – see you there!

28 August: The competition game today Consistency.. (my favourite), a very tight game all the way between Carol Dixon and Rhonda Christie, congratulations to Carol who was in front at the end and to r/up Rhonda who kept at her heels all the way. In our social triples winners were Lenore Bartlem, Janet Smith, Shirley Cassidy with r/up Wendy Britten, Elaine Smith, Joan Gardner – there were a lot of very good bowls played during this game! We also had a second triples game with winners June McCotter, Beatrice Gallagher, Helen Haynes and r/up Ann Jackson, Beatrice Gallagher, Violet West. This game was not decided until the last couple of ends..What an enjoyable game. (Its good when you are playing swinger on both teams – you are always going to win. The daily prize went to President June and the vegies to Violet. Good luck to the ladies going to Fairymeadow’s Gala Day on Thursday. It was good to see Robyn Single back today, recovering from her bronchitis, and thanks for marking the Consistency competition.

4 September: Sunblock out today! With a taste of summer this morning, the nominated pairs got under way – winning pair Robyn Single and Violet West played a great game in almost perfect conditions, r/up Beatrice Gallagher and Elaine Smith who tried hard but were not up to it today against these two! The social pairs resulted in winners Rhonda Christie and Lenore Bartlem with r/up Helen Haynes and Joan Gardner – much fun and laughter coming from that rink with the “butterfly” chasing all the bowls! Happy Birthday to Joan Gardner who was celebrating her birthday today...The ladies had a wonderful day at Fairymeadow and came home with a win!! With President June McCotter away, Vice President looked after proceedings and won the fruit and vegies...Helen Haynes won the daily prize. Rhonda managed a few wins in bingo today..

11 September: Unfortunately our Friendship Day scheduled for today was cancelled as many of the Towradgi ladies had a week long tournament commitment so bowls organiser Rhonda Christie took the opportunity to get the nominated pairs final and the consistency final completed. It was a day of swirling winds on the green with the wind changing direction every other end but we did have a little sun to enjoy…Congratulations to Robyn Single and Violet West on their hard fought win in the pairs with r/up Shirley Cassidy and Rhonda Christie fighting to the end.

The consistency final was also fought to the end with winner Beatrice Gallagher and r/ up Carole Dixon... Beatrice did seem to have the edge when Carol’s bowls started obeying her instructions to “stop” or “keep rolling” and ignoring Carol’s pleas.

On another rink, with much noise, the winning social team of Wendy Britten, Janet Smith, Joan Gardner, Robyn Smith played some great shots to get over the line in front of r/up Lenore Bartlem, Helen Haynes, Ann Jackson, Elaine Smith. Elaine won the daily prize and Jenny Mason the fruit and vegies. Following lunch President June McCotter convened the monthly meeting. Rhonda thanked all competition participants for their efforts – these games are all now completed – 1st year we are ahead of time. Lenore relayed information from district meeting. Charman Trophy will be held on 9th October and Christmas party possible date will be 18th December.

SPORT Why Do People Do Yoga?

By Amber Muller I often get asked why do I do yoga and what benefits do you get from yoga, so without waffling on for pages and pages, I do yoga because it makes me feel good! Good in my body and my Mind, I feel more connected with my body so I pick up on the warning signs before I get injured and yoga keeps me calm and focused and I feel I need that in my life.

I think many people know that their bodies would benefit from doing yoga, but it is hard to fit it in to the busy schedule that we all lead and its one of those things that should be nearer the top of the list but slips down to the bottom.

Another thing that seems to put people of yoga is that they think of yoga as a stretch class and that they are not flexible so worry that they might not be able to do it or be any good at it. Or often if you’re a guy you think yoga is a bunch of women sitting crossed leg for an hour and doing a few side bends and how could you fit into that!

What's more, yoga improves muscle tone, flexibility and stamina. It reduces stress and tension and improves concentration. It simulates the immune system and improves circulation.

So with all of those benefits it sounds like it’s worth giving it a go. I am running some beginners classes that are purely for people that have not tried yoga before or have only tried it a couple of times. These classes will teach you about correct breathing and how to do basic postures for your body or ailments.

Sunday Social Golf Club Hi there, Tony G (El Presidente) filling in for Vicki “The Hair” Little who is away this month on assignment.

Well, our September game brought with it a beautiful spring day.

Twenty-six souls got themselves to the first tee before 8 o’clock, in readiness to take on some challenging pin placements and the flora and fauna at Royal Boomerang. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, the stage was set!

Stableford was the order of the day, with the Match Play Semi played out between Dave “The Accountant” Flewin and Travis “The Midas Touch” Chipperfield. Trav managed to string together a decent game to come out triumphant, winning 5 & 3. Dave will now take on BIG Kev “Hurricane” Brown. The winner will meet Trav in the Grand Final.

Stableford winners were: first place Rob “The Quiet Achiever” O’Connor on 42 points, picking up a meat voucher from Al’s meat emporium, second place (on a count back) was Chris “The Bear” Emmett, who collected a Heritage Cellars voucher, followed by the effervescent Debbie “Bubbles” Ross who gained a “free” game of golf from our friends at Boomerang, both carding a massive 40 points. Handicapper has his eye on you… watch out (cut, cut, cut).

It was good see Mark “Chucky” O’Connor roll up, making a triumphant return following his special appearance the previous month under (self-imposed) trying conditions.

The Club has enjoyed the arrival of several new players – they must like us, ‘cause they keep coming back (lol). If you are keen or just want to get out of the house for a bit, then why not join us on the first Sunday of every month, at the first tee just up the road at the Royal Boomerang Golf Course on Maddens Plains. It doesn’t cost a bomb, and you’ll meet some other locals who prefer playing golf to mowing lawns or doing housework!

SPORT Stanwell Park Sea Eels Cram Foundation Day 2012

By Karl Weber, Publicity Officer, SPSE On Saturday August 19, the Stanwell Park Sea Eels Winter Swimming Club hosted our major charity, the Cram Foundation, for a day of socialising and festivities. From its inception, this day has always been a special celebration in the Sea Eels social calendar. It is a day when members share time and friendship with residents and carers. Over the past couple of decades, members have watched Cram Foundation residents grow from being toddlers into adulthood, and this year 40 residents and their carers travelled up from Wollongong to Helensburgh Workers Sports and Social Club for the day.

After a suggestion from one of our members, Dawn Marshall, 2012’s celebrations took on an Olympic theme. The Workers Club function room was decorated by some of our members with different national flags and Olympic styled adornments. Residents and members dressed in the Green and Gold colours of Australia’s Olympic team, and took part in a variety of events. These included discuss, shot put, balloon tennis, bowls and even a torch relay.

Residents and carers thoroughly enjoyed the thought and efforts that club members went to and their CEO Gareth McKeon passed on that it is a ‘huge effort for the foundation to get the residents here each year and it is a great day out.

It makes a real difference to our residents and it is the interaction that the clients look forward to. We really appreciate it.’ Our Club President Peter McDonald presented Gareth McKeon with a cheque for $1000 that represented the clubs fundraising efforts through the season.

The smiles on the resident’s faces at the end of the day when they were presented with gift bags were priceless and special thanks needs to go out to our various sponsors who contributed on the day, Peabody Energy, Binners Farm, Helensburgh Butchery, St. George Bank, Coopers Snacks and Healthy Canteen. Online discussion amongst club members after the function highlighted how much we all enjoyed the day and look forward to it next year.

It was a shining day in our history’.
