Signs Of A Buzz In Business By Angela Fagerström After many months of vacant commercial properties creating an eyesore for the Helensburgh and Stanwell Park business precincts, it seems the tide has turned and properties are starting to fill. The recent activity is in contrast to the low business confidence levels reported across the Illawarra in mid February (NSW Business Chamber and Commonwealth Bank Business Conditions Survey). Recent arrivals in Stanwell Park includes new cafe 16 Feet Espresso, and nearby Mad Dog Deli is offering a gourmet deli and gelato bar experience with a unique dog friendly environment. Real Estate duo Robyn and John Venn are also set to open Coastline Real Estate in Stanwell Park in the coming weeks. Helensburgh Business Park (HBP) at 17 Cemetery Road now boasts around a 95% occupancy rate just three months since its completion. “We are thrilled with the way the Business Park has been received and we have even been able to attract new businesses from out of the area, others have used it as a platform for growth” said HBP developer Andy Offord.

HeartKids Page 7

The Arcade at 123 Parkes Street is now fully occupied with Reiki therapist Jasmine Sky moving in mid February. Also in Helensburgh, the Wattamolla building at 20-24 Walker Street is starting to fill its commercial spaces despite a slow start. In some instances the newcomers are upsizing from nearby premises, creating a void in another location, but the general activity is encouraging for local businesses. “The reduction of vacancy rates in the local business districts is great news. An increase in local businesses will have a positive effect on the local economy. A strong local economy will also provide much needed support for local charities, sporting groups and community projects. It’s of vital importance that we support our local businesses to maintain a strong local economy” said Quentin Field, spokesperson of the Northern Illawarra Chamber of Commerce. Wollongong City Council has responded to the more widespread lack of economic growth by announcing at an ordinary meeting of Council held on Monday February 27, a business-council partnership model for economic development. SPACE, or a lack thereof seems to be the story of my life. Firstly, in my ever shrinking home, in my schedule, and now in the pages of the ‘little white book’. There was so much quality content sent in from readers and local businesses relating to parenting, that there was simply no way I could fit it all in. The idea of a go-to directory for parents has been scaled back to allow for more local news and events. However, I am sure that it will still be a handy reference point for parents and grandparents in need. Enjoy!

From page 1 This partnership has been welcomed by the Illawarra’s leading business groups. “Business and Council working together is a powerful combination. We each bring different expertise and resources to the issue of supporting existing businesses and attracting new investment to Wollongong” said Mike Leask, CEO of the Illawarra Business Chamber. Among those elected to the Economic Development Advisory Board is ward one Councillor Greg Petty who said “while growth is essential it must be socially responsible, we need new businesses in the community to fill gaps in the market place.” “I will be urging Council to look at bringing new businesses to the area – businesses that are not currently represented. This will involve a program that not only looks at the new business, but lays out the welcome mat to ensure the new business operators and their families integrate into the whole community as soon as possible”.

Kids Walk for Life – Update

What Do You Want At Bald Hill?

Congratulations to Helensburgh resident Darren Watt and all his helpers who collectively raised $12,845 (as of 29.02.12) for the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation. This figure is now well above the $10,000 target. Well done to all who took part in the 31.8 km walk or made a donation! Also, a reminder that Antoinette Holmes and her helpers from Happy Hearts Academy have coordinated a trivia night to be held in March, with all proceeds going to help the Brown family of Helensburgh. Four year old Clara Brown was diagnosed with Leukaemia in late 2011 and the money raised from the trivia event will be going to the family to help with day-to-day costs; Clara’s mother has had to leave work to be with her daughter. Helensburgh Workers Sports and Social Club has donated the venue for the afternoon of trivia, and local quiz master Warren Shearer will test everyone’s knowledge from 3pm on Sunday March 25. ‘We have had wonderful items donated for this event, including sporting memorabilia. We will also be having a silent auction’ said Antoinette. For more information on the trivia event or to book a ticket, contact Antoinette Holmes on 4294 9141. Tickets are $15 per head with 10 people to a table. Individual bookings welcome.

Convenor of Neighbourhood Forum 1 (NF1) Pauline Smith, said she is “pleased that Wollongong City Council appears to be willing to obtain community input before any plans are put on the drawing board for Bald Hill”. The NF1 intends to form a sub-committee at the next meeting on Wednesday March 14, from 7pm at the Helensburgh Community Centre. The sub-committee will work with Councillors, hang-gliders, the local business community and residents to achieve the best possible outcome for this iconic landmark. It is also essential that any plans for the Bald Hill area include solutions for the roads of the area including the intersection at Lawrence Hargraves Drive and Otford Road. Pauline Smith is asking for local input from all residents and businesses – have your say on Bald Hill’s future by sending any ideas to: baldhill@ nf1.com.au or mail to: c/- Bald Hill PO Box 155 Helensburgh 2508.

RMS Tackles Land Slip Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) is monitoring the long-term effects of sea erosion and wet weather on the stability of slopes below Lawrence Hargrave Drive, just north of Sea Cliff Bridge. In 2006 the embankment in an area known as the northern amphitheatre, dropped approximately eight centimetres. In 2008 it dropped a further two metres this was followed by a storm event that caused a further 1.5 metre movement, resulting in a new slip area, in July 2011. RMS is now completing weekly monitoring of the area to gain more detailed information on its stability. The information is expected to be compiled by mid 2012, and will provide the information needed to develop a plan to effectively manage the embankment long term. The RMS will be providing community updates as more detailed information becomes available. To watch a 3D animation of what is being done to manage the slip go to: www.rta. nsw.gov.au/roadprojects

COMMUNITY NEWS HeartKids Helensburgh mortgage broker Nathan Shoemark is raising money for HeartKids by completing an Olympic distance triathlon at Noosa Heads later in 2012. HeartKids is an organisation supporting the 1 in 100 babies born with heart disease. This represents six babies born every day across Australia or over 2000 per year. How did he get involved and why? Through friend and motivator Nathan Johnston! In September 2011 Paul Smith and Nathan Shoemark aided Nathan Johnston to complete a half marathon. They initially thought they were training him to do something remarkable; as you may know Nathan Johnston is a blind athlete. During his three month training period, Nathan Johnston taught his trainers the valuable lessons of achieving something difficult and helping others.

In 2012, Nathan Shoemark hopes to be involved in helping more people. The agenda for his fundraising activities includes an anticipated 1000 km team running race, some local events and the Queensland Triathlon, which will all be for a cause other than personal best. He also hopes to become more involved with Engadine Triathlon Club. “At the end of the day, the time spent training and away from the wife and kids can be for something more than a list of personal finisher’s medals, particularly when you will finish nearer to last than first” said Mr Shoemark. To help the fundraising effort for HeartKids you can donate via www.gofundraise.com.au/ page/shoemarktriathlon where funds are directed to the organisation. Offline options are also available: Lamingtons are $7 for half-a-dozen and $12 a dozen. HeartKids would like to thank Peabody Metropolitan Coal for their contribution of $500 towards the $5555 target. Nathan Shoemark would like to thank Nathan Johnston for his continued inspiration; Pete Raudaschl for the living proof you’re never too busy to help; Andrew Logan for getting his backside to the pool; Paul Smith, James Baker, Murray Morrison and Nathan Severino for continued local support. He also wishes best of luck to Donna Thwaite in the event and helping with the cause. Nathan wishes to expresses his love and thanks to Rachel and the kids for allowing all of this to happen. Be Part Of A Creative Journey Local independent alternative country artist, Jackie Dee has recently returned from her third successful Tamworth Country Music Festival, and is full of energy and motivation to fulfil her dream of recording her first full length studio album following the success of her debut EP Tide. “Recording an album along with all the post production expenses is a costly process, and independent artists have to find the money up front to make it happen” said Jackie. In addition to the more conventional methods of raising funds like selling merchandise and performing gigs, Jackie is asking for help from local friends and supporters to help make the studio album happen. There are various levels of sponsorship available to support Jackie’s creative journey. A Gold Sponsorship package is $49.99 and includes two signed copies of the forthcoming CD packaged and posted PLUS acknowledgement inside the CD sleeve for your part in making it happen. HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD War Stories - A Salute In Story And Song To The ANZAC Spirit If you were entertained by Helensburgh resident Darren Coggan’s ‘Peace Train, the Cat Stevens Story’ – you will be moved by the honesty and spirit of his new production ‘War Stories’ which kicks off a national tour at Illawarra Performing Arts Centre (IPAC) Wollongong on Tuesday 24 April at 7:30pm. Inspired by his own family history, Darren connects us to an iconic part of our heritage. Personal and exceptional stories of Australians at war are woven into songs that provide an intimate perspective of the tales that have helped shape our nation. ‘War Stories’ takes you on an insightful journey into the lives of the Australians behind the lines. We reminisce about the generation of women who stayed at home and kept the country running. We celebrate the mateship, humour and courage in the Gallipoli trenches. And we honour our Indigenous diggers, a story rarely told. Darren said, “I’m very proud to be playing the IPAC Wollongong again, it has become my favourite theatre in Australia and is the perfect venue for the intimate nature of this show. ‘War Stories’ presents both small and personal stories, footnote-like, that are outside the big, simple mainstream history of Australians at war and it makes those chapters of our military history more accessible, more human. The show is more than a living graveyard and it is not an RSL ‘smoko’ show. It is a two hour theatrical story piece with songs and a refreshing new look at what is such a defining part of our heritage.” Awarded ‘Heritage Song of the Year’ at the 37th Golden Guitar Awards, Darren’s beautiful performance brings a warmth and integrity to the narrative. ‘War Stories’ is a salute to the Australian spirit and how we find the strength to shine in the most intense and heart-breaking situations. SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL BUSINESS La Belle Boutique

With Summer over before it really got going, many of us have been left with the feeling that we have been cheated out of our sunshine and warmth this year. The miserable weather has certainly left people feeling flat and low! Don’t worry - we can help! If your lack of colour is getting you down, why not try a spray tan? These magical treatments have improved out of sight in the last 10 years. What used to be a tedious process (spraying, drying, streaking and waiting only to wake up to see you have a blotchy orange coloured tone) has become a refined one. It takes about 15 minutes from the time you walk into the salon to the time you walk out. The colours are now fabulous, very natural and if you are time poor, some can be washed off two hours after they have been applied. We have a weekly top up tan price of just $15 so you can afford to keep up that summer glow all year round. The warmer weather can also leave our skin feeling stressed and lack-lustre. Sunscreen while protecting from the sun, can cause havoc with our skins balance. A facial is a great way to get skin back on track but also a fabulous way to unwind. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thank You Ruth, Duff, Norma, Lesley and Allan would sincerely like to thank everyone for their flowers, cards and support during the sad loss of our brother, David. Many travelled long distances to celebrate David’s life with us and we were overwhelmed by the kindness and love you all showed. Rest in peace ‘Fox’. All letters must carry the sender’s home address and a contact number for verification. Please limit letters to 300 words. By submitting your letter for publication, you agree that we may edit the letter for legal, space or other reasonable reasons - Editor. Dear Editor, Councillor Leigh Colacino had a motion unanimously passed at a Wollongong City Council meeting on October 10, 2011 to stop the Wollongong Tourism’s destruction of our Bald Hill view and surrounding area, thus preventing the another nightmare like at Bulli Tops that even the Lord Mayor has said should not be there. It is now more than four months since that motion was passed and on asking Cr Colacino what was happening to the charrette that the motion was to form, he replied with copy of the Council staff prepared timeline. On reviewing that timeline it became apparent that is not until April 2012 that the community is involved. It also showed that work on this charrette did not start until the middle of January this year and that nearly a month would be spent “briefing” consultants. Why? The answer came back “The early briefing of the consultant is not about design briefing but about process briefing. It will include information on site constraints such as RTA requirements, CASA requirements [because of the hang-glider activities] but will not seek in any way to influence design or content.” Council already has all the site constraints from the previous nightmare design, so why are Council redoing the initial gathering of site constraints when the data/knowledge should already be available in Council “knowledge” of the site.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD This raises a number of questions: Why are we wasting money redoing work that has already been done? Did Council not get the data/knowledge from the first consultants? Why are Council using consultants? Doesn’t Council have the internal staff to do this? Why has it taken this long for the charrette to be started? With the comments from Councillors at the at Council meeting regarding Council staff taking too long to get reports back to Councillors, (and with even one motion defining the actual date the report was to be returned to the Council chamber) why are Council staff taking so long to respond to resolutions of the Council? My understanding of Council resolutions are that the resolutions are a direction to Council staff via the General Manager, to carry out the resolution as defined in the minutes of the council meeting. Resolutions of Council should not be at the bequest of anyone to change or delay. Community of 2508, we need to get behind Cr Colacino and drive this charrette ourselves as Council staff are clearly not happy with community involvement. They speak with word but don’t follow up with actions. Warwick Erwin, Stanwell Tops Definition: Charrettes are public workshops that include community members, design professionals, and other project staff. The goal of the charette process is to capture the vision, values, and ideas of the community - with designers sketching to create alternatives and ideas as fast as they can be generated by the participants. Dear Editor, I just wish to publicly thank all those well wishers from the local district and beyond on the ongoing slow recovery from my major heart attack early January bought on by completely false accusations by the media. Proven to be false and incorrect in a letter from Mayor Bradbery of Wollongong City Council. Once again thank you to those well wishers. Alan Bond

By Maria Disibio and Andrew Hales Holy Cross Catholic Primary School held an Open Night with a difference. The difference rests with a model that empowers the students to explain their new learning environment to their parents. On Wednesday February 15 students provided their parents with information (traditionally explained by the teachers) in a guided tour of their classroom. Each student was responsible for showing their parents where they sit, their workbooks, classroom work spaces and other relevant information to the student’s everyday learning. As well as the tour, each parent received a school and class handbook and a Religion Newsletter outlining how the students would be learning and how the parents could engage in this learning. The teachers were on hand to answer parent questions. This new format has given the students responsibility in and understanding of, their learning journey.

Mikaela Has A Close Shave At just 16 years of age, Stanwell Tops resident Mikaela Erwin is making a very brave choice – to shave her head for the benefit of charity, raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation’s important work. Every year, between March 15 and 17 thousands of people shave, colour or wax their hair to help people with blood cancer, taking part in ‘The World’s Greatest Shave’. When asked what made her consider losing her long locks Mikaela said “I saw a girl at my school (Inaburra) participate last year which made me think about it and then a friend’s dad passed away last year from cancer, so I decided to just do it”. Mikaela struck a deal with her school Principal that if she reached her fundraising target of $2,500 she would be allowed to do the shave at school. “As of today (27.2.12) I hit my goal, and went past it! My goal was $2500, and I’ve just reached $2,610!” said Mikaela. Two of her friends from the Inaburra School at Bangor and her sister Liana will perform the shave. YOUTH / CHURCH NEWS “Never See A Need Without Doing Something About It” Fr Bede North, the new Parish Priest of Holy Cross Parish, blessed and inducted Year 6 as senior leaders of Holy Cross Catholic Primary School. The students made a pledge to serve the parish school community with honour and integrity, and to live their Catholic faith through words and actions. The students received leadership badges from the school Principal, Mrs Kerrin Cronin and also played an active part in the Mass. The seniors prayed that they could lead lives guided by the words of Blessed Mary MacKillop of the Cross: “never see a need without doing something about it”. The ceremony was followed by morning tea in the parish centre with parents, relatives and parishioners. The students thanked those who helped them to celebrate this occasion, especially Mrs Baker, the Religious Education Coordinator, who spent much time and effort preparing the students for this special event.

SPOTLIGHT ON PARENTING Cultivating Resilience In Our Children By Terri Ayliffe from Zeality As parents, we work hard to ensure that our children have good and happy lives. We seek to protect them from emotional pain and social difficulties, but the truth is our children, at some point in their lives, will experience stress and trauma no matter what we do. It would be of benefit to our children to help them understand their own strength and abilities and to learn to be adaptive to and be strengthened by experiences, in other words, to assist them to strengthen their resilience. To assist our children to be more resilient we need to encourage a sense of self-awareness, assist them to self-manage, give them a sense of social awareness, help them establish good relationship skills and to make responsible decisions. We do this by allowing them some autonomy (age appropriate), encouraging independent decision making and problem solving, encourage open communication, to seek alternative perspectives of thought and by encouraging optimism and gratitude. I have listed a few games and behavioural tasks that can help you encourage your children to become more resilient. • To assist your child to be a mindful listener and communicator, introduce a stone, stick, toy or cup (the choice of instrument does not really matter), which is held by the person talking in a family discussion. All others cannot talk until the instrument is passed to them; they must listen intently when someone else is talking. • Ask your child to conduct an interview with a significant adult. Get them to ask questions such as “what was the most difficult decision you had to make when you were twelve?” Select questions which allow the adult to tell a story of their resilience. Ask your child to write down the answers and discuss the answers with them, ensuring that you assist your child to understand the process of problem solving. • To assist your child with focus and breathing, take a cotton ball and ask your child to roll it between their hands to make it as compact as possible. Place the cotton ball on their up-facing palm, and ask them to blow it just enough to balance it on the tip of their fingers. This exercise helps them to learn to control their breathing,

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD which is an important feature of regulating emotions. • Teaching your child to think about alternate perspectives assists them to limit negative selfevaluation and builds flexibility and empathy. If your child is upset about the behaviour of others, listen to them explain their perspective then when they have finished say “let’s flip it”. Help them find alternatives to their perspective of the situation by finding different possibilities for someone else’s behaviour. Assisting a child to seek alternatives of thought is also an effective way to help them protect their self-esteem. • To assist them to improve their decisionmaking and problem-solving skills, talk through their issues, encourage them to look at all the alternative solutions and possible outcomes to their problems. Many children fear making decisions because they don’t want to make a mistake. To assist them, it is worth considering placing a sign, perhaps on your fridge, which reads “no mistakes = no learning”. • Finally, journal writing is an effective way for children to evaluate their experiences and behaviour. As an activity, you might like to give them an exercise book and decorative paper then ask them to decorate their journal in a way that makes them feel positive or happy. At the end of each day, ask them to write their experiences and encourage them to write the good experiences with more detail than the bad. Each evening, re-read the previous day’s writings with them; discuss the issues and solutions and recall the happy moments with them. www.zeality.com.au

SPOTLIGHT ON PARENTING Never Work With Animals Or Children!

SHUTTERS

(limited time)

20% OFF TIMBER PLANTATION OWNER CARL TOOLE

By Lynda Babister of Babister Legal Never work with animals or children. So goes the common saying. But what happens when your child wants a job. How old do they need to be? What sort of job can they do? How much can they earn before they pay tax? Do they need a tax file number? There is no minimum age for working in NSW, except for door to door sales (which is 15). If the child is under 15, they may not work during school hours; more than one shift per day; more than 4 hours on a school day; after 9pm if they have to go to school the next day; or less than 12 hours since their last shift. They also may not combine work and school hours to make more than 40 hours in a week. For full time work the child must be over 17. Some workplaces, such as McDonalds, have a firm policy of not employing anyone under a certain age. Working in the entertainment industry – films, modelling or door to door sales have different regulations. These industries come under the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998, and Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) (Child Employment) Regulation 2010. Employers operating in these fields must be authorised by the Children’s Guardian and comply with a Code of Practice designed to protect the children’s welfare. There may be a trial period, otherwise known as a probationary period. This may not be for more than 3 months. Unless your child is in a work experience program (such as with school or TAFE), or doing voluntary work, they must be paid. There is no such thing as an “unpaid trial period”. The rates of pay, and standard hours of work are listed in the relevant industrial award for the type of work. If your child is working part time, they must be paid the pro-rata rate of pay for the number of hours that they work, at the required rate for their age and experience.

They are also entitled to the appropriate annual and sick leave, again pro-rated. When your child begins the job they should receive a written letter of offer detailing the hours, pay and what duties are required. They should receive a pay slip each time they are paid, telling them how many hours they have been paid for, what the rate of pay was, how much tax was deducted and how much pay they have received. It is wise to keep a work diary, noting down what day they worked, and how many hours. That way they can check they have been paid the correct amount. If your child is paid for their work, then the employer must pay their income tax into the Australian Tax Office. The child must then prepare a tax return, and will require a tax file number. If you would like assistance please contact Lynda Babister at Babister Legal, 4294 3458 or 0418 604 098. Email lynda@babisterlegal.com. au.

CLUB NEWS PROBUS CLUB OF HELENSBURGH By Joan Gardner, Publicity Officer February was a month of celebration with the 8th Birthday of Helensburgh Probus Club. The meeting was well attended and we had the cutting of the cakes with several of the foundation members present. Without the foresight of these people the current club would not exist. We owe them a debt of gratitude. It was exciting to see the Club grow from so few to so many. Fittingly we attained our quota of 100 members on this special occasion. Probus is designed to cater for semi-retired and retired folk who are willing to join in our various activities with a view to friendship, fun and fellowship. We continue to lead very busy lives with our concert activities to local and Sydney venues. Recently attending the musical “Annie” and looking forward to “Love Never Dies” in March, with a group going to Sutherland in May for the production of “Joseph and the Dream Coat”. The fun does not stop there with a foot and mouth walk once a month to many varied places of interest. These walks are easy going but we encourage those who cannot manage the walk to join us for lunch. We have come across many interesting and varied venues for lunch. Our Wine and Dine is also a great way to “mix and match” with fellow members. Our excursions are also worth looking into with a very committed Activities Officer taking good care of us.

A recent visit to Fort Denison was very informative. Up and coming are outings to Davistown by train and ferry, guided tour of Cockatoo Island and another to Wollongong Science Centre and Planetarium. Our golf days once a month continue to be well attended and the Round Robin Bowls competition is due to begin in April. A coach tour to Montville in May was an instant success with the places filling on the first day advertised. Similarly, the 20 day China Tour set down for October is extremely popular, but there are still some vacancies for this one. We are trying to fit in another Tag-along camping trip, but hey! -There are only 52 weeks in the year ! We will be attending the Seniors’ Activity day at the National Park in March which promises to be as great a day as it was last year having read the programme. Our AGM will be held in March, so we will see some new faces on our committee. Many thanks to the outgoing committee members, your work and dedication to our club is appreciated. We meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month at the Helensburgh Workers’ Sports and Social Club.

CLUB NEWS WAVES 2508 Profile of Rona Powell: My name is Rona Powell but to the older generation of Burghites I will be remembered as Rona Foulds of Bluegum. I was born in England in a small village called Howe Bridge, a suburb of Atherton on the outskirts of Manchester, the only daughter to John and Sara Foulds. I had one sibling, a brother John, who was four years my senior. We came to live in Australia because of my brother’s health and settled in Helensburgh as my mother had a brother living here. We lived out on the Princes Highway in the same house that I now live in at 11 Robertson Street. This dear old house has stood up to two moves. Firstly when the Highway was widened and secondly when the Expressway was built. It has also survived two bushfires. I went to school at the age of six at Helensburgh Public school. Until I reached third class my mother drove me in a sulky. After that, I walked. There was no school bus in those early days. The school consisted of the old stone building facing Lukin Street. Our water supply was by tanks, the toilets were wooden buildings with a pan service emptied once a week. Each room had an open fire for warmth in winter, but cooling for summer was to open the windows. I went to St. George Girls High School for five years; there I met three girls who became my life long friends. One girl introduced me to her cousin, Jim Powell, known as Wally whom I later married. Another girl married my brother and became my sister-in-law. I am still in close contact with the third girl. I can’t quote any outstanding academic achievements whilst at school, but I did win a scholarship to Sydney Teachers College along with two of my closest friends. I studied for two years, one year Primary and then for the second year I did a course in Infant school training. When I left college I spent two years at Otford School. It was a lovely small school with only two teachers. I taught k, 1st and 2nd classes, they 38 Helensburgh & District Herald

were mission children brought down to Otford from Croker Island when the Japanese bombed Darwin, they all fitted in very well with the local children. My transport to Otford was on the back of a horse and a reward for good behaviour was a ride after school. It worked.! My husband Jim (Wally) enlisted in the Army on December 24, 1942 and served with the Signal Corps 56 Battalion. They were on there way to Singapore by ship when Singapore fell to the Japanese, so the Battalion returned and were off-loaded in W.A. Whilst out on manoeuvres Wally damaged a knee and was transferred back to Sydney to have it operated on. After he was back on his feet he trained other personnel in the Signal Corps. 56 Battalion went on to fight in New Guinea and Wally was discharged a corporal on February 29, 1944. When my husband finished with the army, I went to Junee to teach, we lived there for 12 months and I came home to have the first of my three sons. I left teaching and we found a home in Helensburgh where my other two sons were born. When my second son was born I received a letter from the local Headmaster asking me to fill a vacant position at the school. I returned to teaching until my retirement in 1977. I spent many years at the local school, three years as Deputy Principal and finally 10 years as Mistress of the infants department. I have seen many changes in Helensburgh, including Water and Electricity on the Princes Highway, no more walking to our now non existent cinema carrying a hurricane lamp. Also, the introduction of the local swimming pool with money raised by the people of Helensburgh, the extension of the football field into a combined sports area. The school is no longer the little school I attended as a child and taught so many local residents. Helensburgh has grown and where once I knew everybody, now I know very few. Sometimes progress is a little sad. Rona is a well respected member of the community and is a long standing member of WAVES 2508. You will quite often see Rona driving her motorised scooter up from Robertson Street to do her shopping.

CLUB NEWS Fellowship Of First Fleeters South Coast Chapter By Betty Warn On January 21, I attended the First Fleeters Australia Day Luncheon. This was held in the Ibis Room at the Marriott Hotel. It is always a most enjoyable function and this year was no exception. A delicious lunch was served and our Patron, Her Excellency, Professor Marie Bashir, AC CVO. Governor of New South Wales, gave a wonderful speech. I have heard Marie speak many times over the years and she just gets better, a truly accomplished and very interesting speaker who really knows Australian history. Our next speaker was author and historian, Michael Flynn. Michael compiled a truly wonderful history of the “Second Fleet.” Sub-titled “Britain’s Grim Convict Armada of 1790.” Control of the Second Fleet had been given to ex-slave traders. In the contract it was not stated whether the convicts had to be landed dead or alive and this led to horrendous abuse and loss of life. These ships, intended to relieve the nearstarving colonists of the First Fleet of 1788, instead, discharged a cargo of sick and dying convicts; some 40% of whom died. Michael also helped the late Mollie Gillen with her book “The Founders of Australia.” “The Founders” is being revised by Michael because further information has come to light regarding the “First Fleeters”. These two marvellous books are my personal favourites in my collection. Our Australia Day celebration was most interesting and was enjoyed by all present. Our next meeting will be at the Ribbonwood Centre, Dapto 10 am on March 6, 2012. Enquiries, please phone Betty Warn 4294 2735.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD Helensburgh Daytime VIEW Club Our first luncheon for 2012 was held on Tuesday February 21 at the Centennial Hotel. The ladies were all so excited to catch up after our break and a good luncheon was enjoyed by all. We had two visitors from the Thirroul VIEW club who have been enjoying the company of our small group of members. Congratulations to our new Committee who have already started to plan an exciting year of luncheons, excursions, theatre outing and speakers. Already we are taking bookings for; “Biddies”, a delightful comedy, Riverside Theatre, Parramatta, 5 May 2pm Matinee, cost $45 (ticket only); “The Nut Cracker on Ice”, June 9, 2pm Matinee, Capitol Theatre, cost $79 (ticket only); “Officer and a Gentleman”, August 22, 1pm, The Lyric Theatre; transport provided at cost. If you wish to join our theatre groups this year please contact our Program Officer, Chris 4294 1103. Our next luncheon is on Tuesday 20 March, 11am for 11.15, at the Centennial Hotel - visitors welcome. For all luncheon bookings or cancellations please contact Nerida on 0429 004 298 before March 14.

SPORT Yoga For Kids By Amber Muller Our children live in a hurry-up world of busy parents, school pressures, incessant lessons, video games, malls, and competitive sports. We usually don't think of these influences as stressful for our kids, but often they are. The bustling pace of our children's lives can have a profound effect on them. I have found that yoga can help counter these pressures. Yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that's noncompetitive. Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves. I am often asked, ‘What is Kids Yoga?’ In my kids classes we practice yoga poses, breathing and meditation often through stories or visualisation, with the aim to have fun and leave with a sense of calmness.

Many children have a difficult time with relaxation and closing their eyes while others can't seem to get enough. Yoga for kids encourages relaxation through visualisation and brings focus through breathing and listening to relaxing music. "Yoga with Amber" Classes are at Mind The Gap at 4.15pm – 5pm on Wednesdays. They are $10 a class. To book or enquire call Amber on 0403 959 334 or go to yogawithamber.com.au

SPORT Ken Watts Memorial Club Carnival 25 Year Anniversary Ken and Pat Watts were two of the founding members of the Helensburgh Hawks Amateur Swimming Club over 40 years ago. Ken was instrumental in writing the Constitution of the Club and gave many years to NSW Swimming as a Carnival Official and Referee at both State and National levels. In Ken's passing in 1988 (February 29), the Annual Club Carnival was then honoured in his name. This year marks 25 years of that occasion! His daughter, Meikle, now President of the Club, said, "It's wonderful to see his family legacy continuing after all these years. It's a great opportunity for our young swimmers to develop their passion for racing at this level." Clubs came from as far as Kincumber in the north and Eden in the South. "As a family we appreciate the commitment of the many other family and committee members, for their ongoing work to keep the legacy "alive and swimming" in our Helensburgh Club; a fun place to come every week.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD At the February 18 carnival event, the Helensburgh Hawks’ won a swag of medals and these were presented by past club members, life members and presidents among the presenters was Mrs Pat Watts. Helensburgh Stanwell Park Rowers Win ASRL Gold By Mark Lea, Boat Captain At the recently completed ASRL (Australian Surf Rowers League) Open, Helensburgh Stanwell Park u/23 women’s crew beat all competition to win their final. The ASRL Open attracted 388 crews from every state in Australia as well as some New Zealand crews, to compete over a three day carnival at Stockton Beach, Newcastle. The u/23 girls’ crew of Georgia Leach, Morgan Davies, Courtney Overell, Brooke Dent with sweep Mark Lea progressed through seven tough rounds to make the final. In fairly flat conditions the girls made a good start in the final, getting through the break in 2nd place behind North Cottesloe from Western Australia. By the turning cans the girls had levelled up with North Cottesloe and then went stroke for stroke with them most of the way home. Coming into the wave zone there was nothing between the two crews, and with no real wave to catch the girls had to just keep up the pressure.

42 Helensburgh & District Herald

About 50 metres from the finish they were able to chase a tiny wave that they rowed onto, but North Cottesloe wasn't able to get on it, so the girls took that wave all the way to the line for a great victory. This is the first time a Helensburgh Stanwell Park crew has ever won the final at the ASRL Open, and is a credit to the many hours of hard work the girls have put in. The ASRL Open is a key indicator for the Australian Championships to be held at the end of March. Final results for u/23 women : 1 Helensburgh Stanwell Park NSW 2 Nth Cottesloe Kwik Cranes WA 3 Elouera Ghostriders NSW 4 Palm Beach Preppies NSW 5 Picnic Bay Luna Chics Qld 6 Torquay Torquedoes Vic. Also competing at the Open were our two junior crews. Both crews performed well with the

SPORT blue junior crew making it through to Sunday, but just missing out by less than one metre from qualifying for the final twelve crews in their division. Two of the crews that beat them made the final so the boys know they are close enough, and just have to keep training hard. Most of the boys also have two more years in this division so the future looks good for the boat section. The branch titles were held on February 19 with all our crews competing well. The u/23 boys were not far off making the final. Our reserve grade crew put in a big effort and made the final where they finished 6th. The u/19 boys made the final and rowed great, with the top four boats all on the same wave, but they just missed out on a medal and were given 4th place. The u/23 girls won their division final, before contesting the open women’s final where they finished on the same wave as the strong Austinmer girls’ crew, but just couldn't get in front of them, for a silver medal. A great effort, since Austinmer are one of the top open girls’ crew going around at the moment.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD Finally, we contested the boat relay, consisting of 1 x open men’s crew, 1 x open women’s crew and 1 x u/19 crew; we put together a team out of the crews we had. Each crew rowed well and we came home strong to finish 3rd and pick up a bronze medal for the club. This is the first time Helensburgh Stanwell Park has been able to put a boat relay team together and shows the depth of rowers we have coming through.

Helensburgh Thistles Junior Soccer PLAYERS WANTED! Registration for 2012 has now closed. Sunday Social Golf By Vicki ‘the hair’ Little Did you know that golf has been around since 1421? Actually, when the Scotts were at war with the French. They called it "chole" back then, a bit like hockey. I suppose they had to have something to take their minds off the killing and slaughtering of each other. Apparently, Mary Queen of Scotts in 1567 was accused of heartlessly playing golf just days after the murder of her husband. That was part of the reason she lost the job of being Queen! We have come a long way, haven't we girls! We finally had a day of sunshine on the 4th February, though a bit muddy. Not for the tough players! Kerry Gardiner came 1st on 42 points, winning a cool bar esky. Dave Murray on 41 points, coming home with a foot massager and yours truly Vicky "the hair" Little on 38 points. Go . . . Girl-Power! If I don't give myself a wrap, no-one else will. We had 31 starters this month, which is great. A few new faces among the old.

Good to see Steve Snee and David Thorn back into it; new player, Charles Davies, welcome guys. Don't forget, anyone who would like to have a hit, the first Sunday in the month at 7.15 at Boomerang. See you there. A little quote from the Confused Golfer; "Golf is like love, one day you think you are too old and the next day you want to do it again."
