Call To Preserve East Maddens Plains

An historic land sale is happening on the Northern Illawarra’s doorstep, comprising the majority of Maddens Plains land, east of the F6 and Princes Highway. This unique section of land is almost 6 million square metres in size (586 ha or 5,861,580 sqm approx) and is currently zoned part E2, Environmental Conservation and partly E3 Environmental Management. MMJ Wollongong, the Agent administering the ‘expressions of interest’ is promoting the potential to take advantage of the NSW Government's Biodiversity Banking (BioBanking) and Offset Scheme. The BioBanking scheme enables 'biodiversity credits' to be generated by landowners who commit to enhance and protect biodiversity values on their land through a biobanking agreement. These credits can then be sold, generating funds for the management of the site, making the land an attractive proposition to the resource sector. However, Wollongong City Councillors (WCC) resolved unanimously to support a motion put forward by Councillor Kershaw and seconded by Councillor Petty, that Council urgently work with the State and Federal Governments to purchase the Maddens Plains land.

“This site forms part of a chain of conservation reserves, which extends from the Royal National Park to the south coast. It is also part of an eastwest corridor of catchments and NPWS reserves that extend from the Illawarra coast to the Blue Mountains . . . the Maddens Plains site is very valuable conservation land which ought to be brought into public ownership and become part of the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area” explained a spokesperson for WCC. “By extending the recreation area we will be taking a step to preserve some of the best Rock Art and Camp-sites in Australia. This is really our last chance. If we fail to preserve this area then we will have we failed the future. Our children and their children will look back at us as Philistines” said Dharawal Elder, Les Bursill OAM. As the HDH went to print the State Member for Heathcote, Mr Evans was “currently seeking advise from the NSW Minister for Environment and Heritage, the Hon Robyn Parker” with regard to the Maddens Plains land. Expressions of Interest in the land close at 4.00 pm, Thursday November 17, 2011. For more information go to; www.mmj.com.au

7D Lands - Your Opportunity To Speak The contentious debate over (former) 7d lands will be put before a public forum the last time, at an historic Council meeting to be held in Helensburgh. The public meeting will take place from 6 pm at the Helensburgh Public School Hall on Those for and against November 21, 2011. “Whether you are for development both or against development hold strong views in the 7d areas, if you want to have your say you must attend the meeting” said Helensburgh resident and Ward 1 Councillor, Greg Petty. Wollongong City Councillors are to be briefed on the history and environmental significance of the lands and they will also be taken on a private tour of the areas prior to the public meeting.

The meeting agenda is not likely to be finalised until the registration of all speakers is complete. Presently letters are being sent to all land owners in the Helensburgh, Otford and Stanwell Tops areas, and other stakeholders advising of the public meeting, and asking people to contact council if they wish to register to speak. Following the public meeting, at subsequent Council meetings the Councillors will be considering a series of reports reviewing the decisions made by the Administrators on the former 7(d) lands. “I encourage all residents and interested parties to attend the Public Meeting on November 21. There is no doubt in my mind Helensburgh, all of the 2508 towns, and the Northern Illawarra have been sadly neglected for far too long. This is your opportunity to meet the newly elected Councillors and to show them that we have a right to our fair share of services, infrastructure and programs” stated Councillor Petty.

Apex Criticises Anti-CSG Group The Stop CSG Illawarra Group attracted around 3000 peaceful protestors to the ‘walk for water’ held at Sea Cliff Bridge, showing community concern over Coal Seam Gas drilling and exploration in the region. Held on October 16, the walk culminated in the participants congregating under a huge banner which simply said "The community has spoken. Stop CSG!" Just five days later, the company at the centre of the Illawarra Coal Seam Gas operations made this statement via their website; “Apex continues to be transparent, open and honest in all its public communications. Unfortunately the general public continues to be subjected to misinformation supplied by anti CSG groups, which if not exposed and rectified could seriously hinder the State of NSW in its beneficial use of the valuable cleaner bridging energy source that is CSG” Chris Rogers, Chief Operating Officer of Apex Energy NL (October 21, 2011). “Stop CSG Illawarra is concerned about the evidenced risks of coal seam gas mining. CSG mining always involves contaminated water and leaking methane, and drilling has been linked to air pollution, the destruction of agricultural land, damage to aquifers, earthquakes, and a large number of health impacts”said Jess Moore, spokesperson for the Stop CSG Illawarra Group. “If the industry is confident that it is operating safely, then it should support our call for a Royal Commission into the full impacts of CSG mining” Ms Moore said. In a written reply (dated Oct 21) to questions raised by the ‘Stop CSG Illawarra Group’, Apex CEO Darren Rice explained; “Apex’s position on hydraulic fracturing has been made very clear via the home page on its web site. Apex has held this position since 2008 and continues to do so. This position has been stated repeatedly by Apex at many public forums and has not changed. None of the conditionally approved boreholes within the Apex Illawarra project include provisions to carry out hydraulic fracturing”. 4 Helensburgh & District Herald

Stop CSG Illawarra Photos By Jaime Plaza

However, this statement contradicts comments in a preliminary production planning document prepared by Mr Rogers in March 2010, where he stated; “It is also expected that the coal seams will need to be stimulated in order to increase localised permeability and there are three options currently being considered for this: 1. Conventional methods (Hydraulic fracturing or frac’ing), 2. Zero Radius Drilling, 3. Combination of the above”. Residents in Darkes Forest are most affected by the Apex CSG exploration licenses and although a small community they were at the bridge walk in strong numbers. “Darkes Forest residents participated in the walk on the October 16 over the Sea Cliff Bridge against CSG and despite comments from a local journalist that the closure was preventing traffic from reaching retailers, feedback was retailers actually had a fantastic day of trade with the walkers going to cafes etc afterwards, even the cars held at the top of Bald hill were supportive of the cause . . .with Lord Major Gordon Bradbury adding his full support to Stop Coal Seam Gas we feel we are moving ahead!” said Karen Dinsdale of the Darkes Forest Residents Group. COMMUNITY NEWS

Bulgo Says “Thanks”

One of the smallest and most unique communities in the Northern Illawarra recently gathered together to say ‘thanks’ to their President of the last 30 years. On Sunday October 16, Tim Collins was recognised for his dedication and commitment to the Bulgo Community by the incoming ‘Bulgo Beach Protection League’ President, George Jackson. Mr Collins was presented with a special award from George and fellow community members, symbolising the natural oceanic beauty of Bulgo Beach. Bulgo is one of four remaining coastal cabin groups in the Royal National Park and its 55 ‘shacks’ are part of the approximate total of 200 dwellings in these now heritage listed communities. Bulgo has inextricable ties with the Metropolitan Coal Mine, as the early Bulgo Beach Community forged its beginnings from visits to the area by mine workers during the late 1890s through to the 1930s. During the harsh times of the mine stoppages and the great depression, whole families moved to live at the beaches of Bulgo, Era, Burning Palms and Garie. Fishing and hunting game allowed the miners to feed their families and ‘hold out’ in their ongoing battle for better pay and conditions, which was a huge concern in early days of the Metropolitan Colliery. Between the start of shaft sinking in 1886 through to 1927, twenty eight men had lost their lives as a result of accidents at “the pit”. “The shack community at Bulgo Beach has had a long association with the Metropolitan Colliery and Helensburgh, and as it happened, and with good timing, the mine have recently approved a grant to support our community which is seeking to provide fire fighting equipment for emergency use in the Bulgo area” said John Arney, Bulgo Beach Protection league Secretary. Representing the modern face of “the pit” and presenting the fire fighting grant, was Ryan Pascoe, Manager, Environment and Community, Peabody Energy. “The fire fighting equipment gear we intend to purchase has been recommended by Rural Fire Service - RFS. It is our intention to ensure that the local RFS personnel will also have access to the Bulgo equipment” Mr Arney added.

Of the attention and accolades Mr Collins simply said; “You pull your weight, I just guide the ship”. As part of the National Trust Heritage Festival, Bulgo Beach holds an ‘Open Day’, usually in April, where history buffs and the curious are invited to take the punishing track down to the shacks, meet locals and see some of the history of Bulgo Community. Details will follow in upcoming editions of the HDH.

Festival Of Flight Stanwell Park - November 13 The annual Festival of Flight, now in its ninth year, is a celebration of the Father of Flight, Lawrence Hargrave, who was the first in the world to become airborne under the lift of four box kites off Stanwell Park beach on November 12, 1894. Over the years the festival has gained the reputation for commemorating the life and achievements of Lawrence Hargrave. This year the festivities will begin at 9.00 am and continue until late afternoon. The CWA (Country Women’s Association) of Stanwell Park continues to be the driving force behind this festival. This year they have joined forces with many other organisations to make the day a memorable one. The raffle this year in line with the theme of flight will be for a free flight simulator experience at Darling Harbour (donated by Brenda Petty). The Sunday event will feature a fly-over by the super constellation Connie, courtesy of the Historic Aircraft Restoration Society, and a sky dotted with hang gliders and paragliders (wind permitting), with frenetic activity on the ground.

A Cup Of Friendship Stanwell Tops resident, Faye Cruickshank recently hosted an afternoon tea, which each year raises money for the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. The event has grown bigger each year and now in its third year, Faye needed more space for her guests and chose ‘Ye Olde Barn’ at ‘Wagon Wheels’ in Stanwell Tops for the October 9 event. The theme of the afternoon tea was ‘Mad Hatters’ but there is nothing mad about the glorious afternoon tea and the ideas and inspiration behind it. Faye with the help of her daughters and close friends, coordinated sponsorship of exotic and traditional teas, scones and brought together women of all ages from Sutherland, Heathcote, Engadine, Jannali, Helensburgh and Stanwell Tops, just to name a few. ”What a wonderful way to spend time with friends and family for such a worthy cause, anyone interested in joining us next year would be most welcome” said Faye. The joyful group of women were from the childcare industry, special interest groups or were made up of a group of ‘friends’.

Tea Please: Aleisha Burrow

The afternoon tea revives the age old concept of togetherness and support through sharing a pot of tea, a simple but effective way women have networked through the ages, long before networking was recognised. The younger girls also had a great sense of involvement serving tea and scones. Part of the ethos behind Faye’s afternoon tea is social inclusion and bridging the generation gap, explained her daughter Blythe. The cheerful buzz and smiles around the room a testimony this indeed works! A small entry fee was charged to contribute to the cost of the venue and fittingly later in the day a tea pot was passed around for guests to make their donation. The ladies were also invited to bring a packet of tea to exchange with guests this year. In previous years items that have been exchanged are tea cups and teaspoons. The most successful (2011) ‘Mad Hatters Country Cup of Tea Exchange’ raised over $1,300 for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. COMMUNITY NEWS Morgan Fundraiser A Fundraising Event will be held at Helensburgh Workers Club 7pm Friday 25 November to raise funds for Stanwell Park resident Carolyn Morgan and her family. Carolyn - a 38-year-old mother of two - has a rare disease called Gastroparesis, which has paralysed her digestive system. She cannot eat or drink anything and is kept alive by a feeding tube inserted into her bowel. There is no cure. She suffers constant nausea, pain, fainting episodes, dehydration, muscle cramping, weight loss and fatigue. Her teeth have lost their enamel and she needs plastic sealants applied every fortnight to try and prevent losing them altogether. Earlier this year Carolyn travelled to Brisbane for revolutionary surgery to place a gastric pacemaker in her stomach to help improve the nausea and other symptoms. Approximately 20 people have had this procedure in Australia with some positive results.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR All letters must carry the sender’s home address and a contact number for verification. Please limit letters to 300 words. By submitting your letter for publication, you agree that we may edit the letter for legal, space or other reasonable reasons - Editor. Dear Editor, Maddens Plains is up for sale and many diligent residents and local organisations have called upon the Wollongong City Council to support bringing the area of nearly 595 acres into public ownership to be joined to the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area. WCC have supported the call at their previous Council meeting to seek help from the State and Federal Governments to buy it. We must protect our catchment areas and this would help. It would also help to protect our unique area from developers and those gas drill sites etc. It is also adjacent to the Dharawal State Conservation Area which Premier Barry O’Farrell has now declared a National Park. Apparently there is $40 million in the Government kick to buy environmental areas so there’s no reason why it can’t be used here. They should also buy back the Hanging Swamp at Stanwell Tops, and see about buying that contentious 7d zoned land back as well. Meet Unicorn Studios Award winning local photographer Melanie Russell of Stanwell Park is launching a new business venture, ‘Unicorn Studios’ which specialises in child portraits. Melanie is a freelance photojournalist with over 12 years experience regularly working with The Illawarra Mercury, The Australian and The Sunday Telegraph and is also a member of the photographic collective fotostrada. “I love working with children. After the birth of my son Nate I have found that I really enjoy being around kids, I relate to them better now and it’s also a lot of fun. I focus on the natural energy of each child and let them be themselves, I take candid outdoor pictures and try to capture their unique personalities. My training as a photojournalist plays a huge part in my style of photography, I tend to let the situation evolve and try not to control the moment too much, this I have found works really well with kids, they feel they can be themselves.” said Melanie Unicorn Studios services include: *outdoor kids and family portraits *weddings *newborns *Actors/model portfolios *corporate Some people ask; Why bother paying for professional photos when I can take them myself on my digital camera?

Award winning photographer: Melanie Russell

“I look at my children and think they are such beautiful joyful beings. I want to capture that in photography so that I can look back and see their personality and see who they were at that time, as it is an important record of their life”. My frustration is by the time I get the camera out, the moment is lost or the kids turn on forced grimaces. If you want that special photo you need the right photographer who makes them feel at ease. “What I love about Mel’s photographs is that she achieved just that. I have shown them to every member of my family and their first response is how beautifully she captured their unique personalities. I was really delighted with the outcome, not only is Mel a great photographer she is so natural with kids they feel so at ease with her. Mel managed to capture them so they didn’t look or feel self conscious at all” said Bronwyn McGrath, a recent customer. This year Melanie was a semi-finalist in the prestigious Moran Photographic prize and recently won the 2011 South East Regional Media Award for a series of photos capturing a drowning at Stanwell Park in January this year, Melanie also won highly commended in the Best Journalist (all media) category for the same entry, which judges described as a “very emotive series of photographs captured by Melanie in what must have been a chaotic and confronting incident”. Melanie has this month contributed to the Helensburgh Herald’s kids fashion pages. By Tanya Demello, Bevans Real Estate Helensburgh With the current global financial crisis, share market dives and general economic uncertainty about the place, there is a perception that real estate has been hard hit and thus we are now in a buyer’s market. However working within the industry I assure you that there is not one overall macro market, in fact every property has its own micro market conditions. These conditions are influenced by many factors; seller’s expectations, pricing, government legislation, the location, level of interest, charm and also the presentation of the property. From the experience of our office, the market is buoyant, we are selling houses faster than we can get them in the door and in fact, our problem is an oversupply of buyers and not enough stock to meet their needs. So much so that we sold one property and had so many keen buyers miss out that we sold another in the same street without even having to advertise. For sellers out there thinking that this is a buyer’s market, please keep in mind that with the right advice and marketing, you could easily create a micro sellers market around your property. It only takes competition from two or more interested parties to turn things from a ‘buyers market’ into that of a ‘sellers market’. For buyers who are sitting back and waiting for prices to drop before they move, remember that competition creates a seller’s market. There are so many times when we hear people say that they want to be updated on a property and will come to the table when there is another bid. This sounds like crazy talk to us in the office. Why would anyone hold off on a property they love and invite further competition to become interested? What we are seeing is that despite the financial upheaval and the predictions of doom and gloom, people have accepted that this is the climate we will be living with for the foreseeable future and are quietly going about their business; this includes buying and selling property. In fact overall what we are seeing is a balanced market, with a good number of buyers, reasonable prices and just not enough stock to meet their needs.

SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL BUSINESS Physical Activity By Alison Rowe – Child & Adult Psychologist The sun is out. No more excuses for staying indoors and lounging around watching television. Venturing outdoors and becoming more active can improve your physical and emotional health. Research illustrates that exercise helps prevent or manage mild to moderate depression and anxiety. Exercise can distract people from their daily worries and blocks negative thoughts. If you exercise with others, it increases your social contact and helps you feel less isolated and alone. Increased physical activity changes the levels of chemicals in the brain that improve your mood, such as serotonin, endorphins and stress hormones. It improves your sleep patterns, increases your energy levels and overall general wellbeing. In older people, exercise has been found to be as helpful as antidepressant medication or social contact in treating depression. Benefits attained from exercise depend on the amount of energy expenditure.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD You have to participate in at least 30 minutes or more of moderate intensity physical activity on most and preferably all days of the week to prevent or manage depression and anxiety. The most beneficial types of exercise include jogging, weightlifting, walking, stationary cycling or resistance training. Motivation is the biggest challenge to increasing physical activity, particularly if you are suffering from severe depression. Even completing simple chores such as getting up and dressed in the morning is difficult. However, you need to break the vicious cycle of feeling depressed, lounging around and then feeling even more depressed. Gradually increase your activity levels by performing simple household tasks, gardening, shopping, driving or writing letters. Completing these activities increases your selfconfidence and motivates you to perform more energetic activities. Try to plan activities that are enjoyable, interesting, relaxing or satisfying. At first, activities may not feel as pleasurable as before, but persist and the pleasure should eventually return. Take a step down, set small, realistic and concrete goals that are achievable. For example, plan to walk around the block or for five minutes rather than for 30 minutes and success at completing this task will motivate you to continue exercising. People with depression often withdraw from social contact, which increases their loneliness and sense of isolation. However, socialising with family members and friends increases your levels of wellbeing, confidence and opportunities to participate in physical activities. It is extremely important that you develop a routine that includes daily exercise to help you become more active. Be flexible with your routine but try as much as possible to stick to it. At the end of every day ensure that you review your routine and if you have not completed enough exercise plan to do more tomorrow. While there are many things that can be done to help people become active, some people may need help to get moving and stay on track. Contact your local Psychologist for assistance. Alison Rowe has been working as a Psychologist for the last eleven years and previously in a variety of welfare positions.

SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL BUSINESS That’s Reflexology! By Val Wallington, Have you ever sat and tapped your finger tips together, or pulled on the lobe of your ear, while trying to think of something? Have you ever noticed that people with bunions often also have a “dowager’s hump” on their backs? Those are both examples of how reflexology may be part of everyone’s life without them even realising it. The tips of the fingers and the ear lobes reflect the brain, so you would have been stimulating the circulation to your brain without even realising it. When my friends’ son was 2½ years old, he had had a cough for some time, which turned into a wheeze and he was prescribed a Ventalin puffer, as needed. The first time I worked on his feet, he was actually wheezing when I started. It was not life-threatening, and I asked if his Mum could wait until I’d finished to give him his puffer. I didn’t work for very long, as young children have a short attention limit, but by the time I had finished, he was no longer wheezing. I worked on him 3 times over about 10 days, and he has not needed his Ventalin puffer since. However, he has been known to point his feet in my direction!!! It works on the principle that the whole body is reflected on the feet, hands, ears and face, and by working on any of those reflexes, you can help what is happening in your body.

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD It turns out that we are born with a large number of ways of being able to heal ourselves. We can work on our feet (what most people think of when you mention reflexology), hands, ears (great for musculo-skeletal problems), and faces. If you have a headache, press on your fingers and/or toes. If you have period pains, hold the softest point on the insides of both ankles (it will be quite sore, so go gently), half way between the ankle bones and the tips of the heels. About a minute should do, and if you can get someone else to do it for you, so much the better. Working on the feet helps to improve circulation, whereas working on the face has a more direct relationship with the brain, and can be really effective in addressing brain-related problems like ADD/ADHD, stroke victims, brain damage due to an accident, etc. In these cases, it is important to work the relevant areas every day, but this can easily be taught to the parents or carers so that they can do the most important points in between more comprehensive sessions. Val Wallington is now working from the Parklife Cafe in Stanwell Park, and can be contacted on 0418 603009.

Locals Bring ‘Hope’ To Vietnam And Cambodia The entire leadership from Hope Church 2508, gave assistance to the poor in Vietnam and Cambodia in October, 2011. They built a house in Vietnam and coordinated and resourced the treatment of over 300 patients in Cambodia, many of whom have never seen a doctor in their entire lives! For Hope Church leader and Helensburgh resident, Lionel Rattenbury one of the highlights

was seeing a young boy who was crippled by a cobra snake bite be treated with surgery. He is now expected to resume full use of his arm. “Although we were not able to speak his language we were able to demonstrate love which is the universal language of the world. His big smile and tears of joy from his family after surgery was something I will remember forever” recalls Lionel. Of the missionary visit, Hope Church 2508 Pastor, Daniel Zelli said, “Giving without expectation of return is such a blessing. It was a great time for all. We truly do live in one of the richest countries in the world in one of the most beautiful places in the world. We have a lot to be thankful for!” For more information go to www. worldhope.com or “World Hope Network” group on Facebook. Left: Dr Malcom operating on the young man crippled by a Cobra bite. Southern Cross Kids’ Camps is a charitable organisation that works with children who have been through abuse, neglect and abandonment.

There are currently eight camps that operate annually throughout Australia, with two in Sydney facilitating children in the Illawarra and the Sutherland Shire. SCKC operate specifically designed programs that are offered to assist children at risk. All have experienced some form of loss. They feel guilt for crimes they haven’t committed, shame for harm done to them and rejection or abandonment because their parents chose drugs or alcohol or someone else over them. They are at greater risk of encountering problems later in life including suicide attempts, anxiety and depression, dissociative disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, drug and alcohol abuse, homelessness and juvenile delinquency. SCKC exist to provide a week of safe childhood memories for these child and allow a time for them to be children again! It is about communicating value to each child that experiences camp, that they do indeed, matter. I truly believe that Making a Difference in the world is not too big, if only each person will give of what they have in their hand, a voice for those without a voice and determine that the child in their sphere of influence will know they are NSW valued for exactly who they are. Look forward to seeing you and yours on Saturday November 12 - 10a.m. - 2 p.m. Cooper Street Reserve Engadine. (event will not proceed in extreme wet weather)

YOUTH NEWS

Holy Cross Catholic Primary School In 1934 when Timothy Collins attended Holy Cross Catholic Primary School, it was known as the Joseph’s School and students in Kindergarten and First class wrote on slates with slate pencils. Today Grace Kissell, Mr Collin’s granddaughter, learns with SMART boards, laptop computers and iPods. Holy Cross Catholic School was founded in 1900 by the Sisters of St Joseph, and visited by Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Australia’s very own saint. The sisters taught at Holy Cross until 1985. Mr Collins recalls the Kindergarten classroom being a small timber room, with one wooden door and a glass window at each end. Mrs Louise Anger (Phillips), fondly recalls her Kindergarten year in the only remaining original building known as ‘Craft Cottage’. “The buildings certainly have changed,” commented Mrs Anger, whose mother, aunts, uncles and siblings all attended Holy Cross and now her three children Georgia, Bethany and Matthew attend a very different looking school! She recalls the school being about half the current size with many classes having to share a room due to lack of space. “I remember the old Library being the Year 1 and Year 2 classroom and the only thing that split the classes was a divider, not a wall.” Today the students and teachers of Holy Cross learn in new and refurbished open plan classrooms, they play on a new artificial turf playground and purchase snacks from the newly built canteen. There was no canteen when Mrs. Anger was at Holy Cross. She recalls having a lunch order on a Monday and the mums purchasing the orders up at the local bakery and then bringing the lunch orders back to school. Mr Collins recalls Third/Fourth and Fifth/ Sixth classes being held in the church. “During the week it was a school with a big red curtain drawn across the altar.” “Every Friday, under the direction of the nuns, we would get the church ready for Sunday Mass and on Monday morning we would help the Nuns get the church ready for school.” Today his granddaughter Grace learns in a contemporary classroom with a wet area, teaching spaces, quiet corners and break out areas. There is access to a newly built Library with a wide range of new books and technological tools.

Mrs Anger recalls the radio program ‘Lets Sing’ and the television program ‘Behind the News’ as the only technology they experienced. “We had to watch the television program at the time it aired, we couldn’t record it and watch it later.” Mr Collins said exercise books and textbooks were the learning tools at Holy Cross between 1934 and 1940. “When I went to school we studied Religion, English, Mathematics, History and a bit of Geography, but not in Kindergarten, in Kindergarten you just learnt to do what you were told,” said Mr Collins. Mr Collins described the changes to Holy Cross as “…incredible, incredible that we have come such a long way, it is a credit to all involved to have such wonderful facilities for the new generation of Holy Cross children to be able to use.” The new buildings and facilities are a result of the Building Education Revolution and the rebuilding of classrooms that burnt down in 2009.

CLUB NEWS

Helensburgh Lion’s Club Annual Country Fair By Karen Lane and Angela Fagerstrom With grey skies threatening to rain on their parade, and a couple of cloud-bursts interrupting early afternoon proceedings, it’s no wonder crowd numbers and parade float numbers were down at this year’s Helensburgh Lions Club Annual Country Fair. The line-up of ‘home grown’ entertainment was outstanding! The Irish dancers were a standout and acts also included; Bec Sandridge, the Jackie Dee duo and the ‘Barefooted Souls’. One of the most colourful and most animated floats in the grand parade also raised a small note of controversy amongst the chattering kerb-side watchers. The float could be described as a large, wire cage on wheels. One watcher quipped that the kids and adults inside the cage looked “a bit squished” but added they were “squished” last year as well. But small controversies aside, every child and adult who walked, marched, drove or was driven along the parade route from the library in Walker Street up to the roundabout in Parkes St had a

smile firmly planted on their face. For those watching, the fun began even before the parade started at 4pm. With the temperature still warm, children with large water pistols were cooling each other off and innocently, or not so innocently, cooling off passers-by. Then towards the end of the parade, unsuspecting residents were again ‘cooled off’ by some of the many Fire Trucks, as the cheeky drivers displayed the ‘firepower’ of the aerial sprinkler systems. WELL DONE to the Helensburgh Lions Club for bringing the community together. In these days of world financial uncertainty and national political uncertainty, it’s nice to be able to come together by the side of the road and have a smile brought to your face. A smile put there simply by watching others in the community - others who generously gave up their time, to walk, march or drive past and simply show us what they do and who they are. BRAVO! Below: The wonderful dancers from Wollongong Academy of Irish Dance

Fellowship of First Fleeters By Betty Warn On our last outing, the Chapter visited the Bradman Museum at Bowral. After a very pleasant drive, we arrived at the Museum in time for a delicious morning tea; a tour of the Museum followed. In one room, five gigantic TV screens run continuously, showing many aspects of cricket and Sir Donald Bradman’s life. Some of his caps and bats were displayed in glass cases; even the tank he used when young, for practice had been painted and displayed. The Museum is a worth tribute to our greatest cricketer. Lunch followed at Mittagong Club and we then visited the Fitzroy Iron Works, the site represents an important chapter in the story of Australian industry. It was the first iron making venture established in NSW. Before that the industry was wholly dependant on imported iron and steel products from England. Deposits of iron ore were identified in 1838, and the Iron Works were built nearby. The works operated from 1848 and closed in 1869. The Fitzroy Iron Works created an enduring symbol of pride in Mittagong and its people that is still used today. When the blast furnace commenced operation in 1864, a solitary lion was cast. It is believed that 50 lions were cast for the opening of the works. The single lion cast in 1864 was the very first made from Australian iron ore. The lion has been proudly acknowledged as the symbol of Mittagong; it was adopted by the Old Shire Council, Chamber of Commerce, RSL Club, sports Clubs and other Bodies. A very interesting day was enjoyed by all. Any enquiries please phone Betty Warn 4294 2735.

WAVES 2508

We were lucky enough to hitch a ride with a very nice gentleman driving a utility, unfortunately on the way the car stalled and he told us we would have to get out so he could drive up a steep hill, (too much weight in the vehicle he said) so out we got but we were worried how we could continue onto Sydney. Lo and behold the gentleman was waiting at the top of the hill what a relief! After my discharge from the army I met a lovely gentleman named Tony Colacino at the famous Trocadero. Tony was Italian by birth; he became a naturalized Australian and joined the Australian Army. Whilst in the Army he volunteered for the Malaria trials that were being conducted in Queensland. We married in 1949 and built our first home in the leafy suburb of Oatley. We had 3 children and it was where I created my first garden and it took me years to get it exactly the way I had envisaged. After Tony retired and our children had grown up we decided to move to a town called Berry. We had a lovely 360 degree view of the township, I would often sit on the verandah enjoying the view in the evenings but I could never get Tony to join me as he was always very wary of mosquitoes. He was affected adversely in varying degrees for the rest of his life. It was in Berry that I started my second garden however I didn’t get to finish that garden as Tony passed away. He was loved by so many people in that little town that the town closed down and the highway was closed for his funeral. For many years whilst in Sydney I had been a speech teacher and while in Berry I helped to establish the Shoalhaven Eisteddfod. They were very happy times. I moved to Stanwell Tops so I could be closer to my son and his lovely wife Jennie. This is where I started my third garden, which unfortunately was completely destroyed along with my home by the Xmas bushfires in 2000, but that fire gave me a chance to begin my fourth garden and what I assume will be my last garden. Helensburgh and surrounding areas have been very welcoming to me. My neighbours, my friends, the bushfire brigade and just people in general have always been friendly. I would especially like to thank the folk at W.A.V.E.S. 2508 for giving me the opportunity to tell a little about my life’s story.

Profile of Maurine Colacino: Maurine is a well respected member of W.A.V.E.S. 2508 and the community, she has served her Country in time of war and this is her Maurine Colacino story. Hello my name is Maurine and I was born in Stockton in 1922 the eldest of 5 daughters to parents Charles and Elsie Merriman. Although I only spent a few years of my life in Stockton they were happy ones. My family moved to Carlton, south of Sydney and that is where I went to school and spent my teenage years. Growing up I loved to exercise and it was that passion that led me to love push bike riding. I would often ride up to 100 miles a day. At the very tender age of 14 I left school and got a job with the Public Service. In my twenties a black cloud loomed on the horizon of my happy life. It was called War and I was very worried. So I joined the army. After my initial training in Liverpool I was sent to Bathurst NSW to take up the position of clerk with the 2nd Advanced Ordinance Corp. I had occasionally been to Katoomba but that was as far west that I had travelled, until my posting. I can vividly recall how impressed I was by the huge expanse that lay before me as the truck driver stopped for a rest before tackling the hair raising descent of Mount Victoria. While in Bathurst, it was my duty to make sure that the Advanced and Forward lines always had the equipment and supplies that were needed. It was also when my eyes were opened to the grandeur of the Australian countryside and it triggered my love of gardening. The huge parks, grazing land, wheat fields, dairy farms and orchards were amazing. I realized while I was based in Bathurst just how strong and brave those first settlers had been. The hardships endured and the legacy that they left our Nation. It was then I truly appreciated what our boys were fighting for. I thank all those Australian men and women who gave so much. The war ended and VE day had arrived, we were given the day off to celebrate, so we all set off for Sydney. 40 Helensburgh & District Herald

SPORT Catch Your Breath By Elaine Bolton “Breathe. Pause. Move. Pause. Breathe. Pause. Move. Pause. It is unending. I heave myself over the final lip…” This is how Bear Grylls describes the final section of the climb up to the summit of Mount Everest, in his book Mud Sweat and Tears. This may also describe what many experience, not just on a ‘once in a lifetime’ expedition, but every day as they climb the stairs. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) which causes breathlessness affects around 2.1 million Australians, around half of which will already have symptoms that affect their daily lives. Alarmingly, around 75% of those with COPD don’t know that they have the condition. Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are both types of COPD. In order to help increase awareness of COPD and to raise funds for the Lung Foundation, Mind the Gap Yoga and Fitness is holding an event called “Catch Your Breath..Walk for COPD” on World COPD Day, Wednesday 16th November from 5.00-6.00pm. We will mark out different distances from 50m up to around 5km starting from our studio (Unit 19) in the new Helensburgh Business Park on Cemetery Road. Participants may walk or jog as far as they like and simply record the distance travelled. There is no entry fee for this event but participants are encouraged to make a donation on the day. Donations can also be made online direct to the Australian Lung Foundation at http://www.everydayhero.com.au/

charity/view?charity=771 and you can also visit this web page to set up your own fundraising page to help raise sponsorship for this event. Everyone welcome to join in! Please be aware that this event will involve walking alongside the road (where possible on footpaths) so parents please supervise younger kids. If you currently have COPD please check with your Doctor before walking. We will have an information stand set up during the event for those who might be interested in further information on COPD. Your support for this event will be very much appreciated. Catch Your Breath…Walk for COPD at Mind the Gap Yoga & Fitness Studio Unit 19, Helensburgh Business Park, Cemetery Road, Helensburgh. Wednesday 16th November 5-6pm. For further information please contact Elaine 0417 679 639. Elaine Bolton is co-owner of Mind the Gap Yoga and Fitness with Amber Muller. She has been a Personal Trainer for over 10 years and can be contacted at physicalpursuit@bigpond.com or on 0417 679 639.

SPORT Helensburgh Women’s Bowls By Joan Gardner for Beatrice Gallagher 6 Sept: With some of our players away with the “seniors club” we only had 12 players so it was decided to play 1 game of social triples and 1 game of social pairs. Social games are great practice for us as we are able to try new tactics and hone our bowls skills for our comp. games. 13 Sept: It was Helensburgh’s turn to host our annual Friendship day with Towradgi. Sixteen Towradgi lady bowlers joined us for a wonderful day. We played “versatility” changing on different ends to play with left hand instead of right hand, tunnel bowls, no kitty etc. great fun and laughter was had by all. We enjoyed a great morning tea .. the ‘burgh ladies are known for their great spreads (a Towradgi lady thought the Country Women’s Association had come to the fore). Prizes were fairly evenly distributed amongst the both Clubs and on- going friendships were renewed. 20 Sept: We hosted the Scarborough Ladies Bowls Club to play for the “Trophy”. This event has lapsed over the years so it was good to see the competition revived. Scarborough took the Trophy home on a narrow 3 to 2 win over the ‘burgh. Maybe next year will be our year ladies. 22 Sept: Eight of our ladies represented Helensburgh in the Gala Charity day at Thirroul. A wonderful arrangement of craft, books, clothes and plants were for sale as well as a great variety of raffles to be won. Three of our ladies were lucky enough to come home the richer for the experience. The effort put into these day by Thirroul is well worth it as over $2,000.00 was raised on the day. Well done! 27 Sept: Only 11 ladies attended so again social games were played. Judith Starky had an “O” birthday which was celebrated at lunch time with a special “Bowling Green Cake” flowers and fine food. Thanks again Robyn for your social and culinary skills. 4 Oct: The Charman Trophy is an annual event and it was good to see the family present. The trophy was won by Carol Dixon, June McCotter and Rhonda Christie with Janet Smith, Roma Hexam and Lenore Bartlem r/up. 11 Oct: The semi final of the nominated pairs saw Carol Dixon and Wendy Britten winners with Janet Smith and Elaine Smith r/up but a very enjoyable competition. 42 Helensburgh & District Herald

HELENSBURGH&DISTRICTHERALD It was great to see 2 new comers join us and hopefully they will return when the green comes in again and we can provide coaching for them. With time running out due the green closure it was decided to play the final of the nominated pairs on Thursday 13th which proved to be a lucky day for Violet West and Robyn Single who took out the Championship with Carol Dixon and Wendy Britten r/up. The green will close on 23rd October for maintenance. Games will be suspended until further notice. Enjoy the break and remember our Christmas party will be held on Tuesday 20th December at the Club.

Locals Go For Coolangatta Gold! By Mel Whiteside On September 25, three locals from the district competed at the Coolangatta Gold, one of the most iconic and challenging multi-discipline races in Australia, with results they can all be proud of. They were; Dave Whiteside, from Stanwell Park Surf Club, Kimberly Fleming and Lachlan O’Grady from Bulli Surf Club. Dave competed in the Masters category, consisting of a 23 km ski paddle from Broadbeach/ Kurrawa to Coolangatta, then headed back to Kurrawa starting with a 3.5 km swim, 4 km run, 5.5 km board paddle and a 10 km run. Dave came 3rd with a time of 5 hrs, 45 mins. Kimberly competed in the female Masters category, consisting of 15 km ski paddle, 4.5 km board paddle, 2.5 km swim and a 7.5 km run. Kimberly finishing 2nd in the time of 4 hrs, 55 mins, Lachlan competed in the under 19’s teams category which followed the same course as the women and he finished 3rd. Professional ironman Caine Eckstein won overall in a time of 4 hrs, 15 mins, in his 5th title win. Over 600 people entered the race this year, retracing the famous movie “The Coolangatta Gold”. It was a great day with perfect conditions to start, then the going was very difficult during the swim and board legs, battling the on-coming winds and currents.

SPORT Sunday Social Golf By Vicki ‘the hair’ Little Golf can lead to many avenues, even the coleslaw cook-off between Normy Bell and “Vicki “the hair”. You’re probably thinking: “What the . . . ?” Anyway; every year we have the Norm & Brenda Bell Annual Plate game. Last year, Peter “Dick-Darling” Little won the honour. So; every year Norm makes his famous coleslaw, God love him! This year he was going to the Gold Coast for his second honeymoon, so I offered to do the coleslaw, to see who’s was the best! The problem was that it rained on the day and I was left with a truckload of slaw. The competition is still on; stay tuned for the outcome next month. Another sad month for a golf friend; Kevy Brown lost his dad recently, due to cancer. Our heart goes out to you and your family, Kev. Well it’s warming up finally in golf and the weather; that would be right: we’re nearly at the end of our year. On the 6th November, we have the Irish 4BBB which will be really interesting

considering we have no Irish’ men in our club. The 4th December is Golf in the morning with presentations & partying in the arvo, that’s always amusing. Give Tony a stage! If you’ve been thinking about joining a social Golf Club, keep us in mind for the New Year. You can check out our website at www. sundaygolfclub.com.au. A quote from the “Confused Golfer” “I used to go to the driving range to practice driving without slicing. Now I go to the driving range to practice slicing without swearing”!
