In this issue, we introduce our Spiritual Leaders and Xceptional Men who are doing a phenomenal job within their respective Xcellence Community. I felt it most important to bring to you a copy that highlights MEN. Why? Because God ordained Men to be the head of the household, they are the pillars that hold the family and our society together.

Although, our men don’t get the accolades due on a consistent basis, we honor them and salute them for being husbands, fathers, leaders, educators, trainers, mentors, and businessmen.

I am in AWE that a vision that started from a mere dream has birthed into my life’s mission. Come join our Xcellence family and me as we CELEBRATE 5 years of service and growth. I often times hear Xcellence mentioned as “Women of Xcellence,” Yes! Women of Xcellence are one of our divisions, but so are Men of Xcellence, Sons of Xcellence, and Daughters of Xcellence. Our company is a reflection of the entire community. I am making a declaration to every man that reads this issue, We Need You! We want others to know, that there are MEN whom have committed themselves to our cause as well! We want others to believe that their story has the ability to inspire and uplift humanity.

Monica is an author, consultant, and serves as the National Membership Director of Xcellence, Inc. She is the overseer of 10 Regional Coordinators nationally and numbers expected to increase in 2013. Her role includes ensuring the Xcellence vision and growth throughout the United States is represented in the most positive way. She is a native of MS, and is now a resident of Nashville TN. Her role as a consultant currently has her in the Everett WA area.

TREVA GORDON Treva Gordon is a motivational speaker, evangelist, artist, song writer, business leader, playwright and community event organizer.

She holds a B.S. Degree in Corporate Communications and Marketing from Austin Peay State University . She is the founder of Leading Ladies, an organization she started in 2011 to encourage women with a message of hope and the inspiration to succeed through host conferences, workshops, and books. She has also hosted her own radio and television shows in addition to emceeing several prestigious events. Treva is a native of Michigan, but currently resides in Tennessee with her husband Robert and three children.

DETECTIVE SGT. VATISHA EVANS-BARKEN Detective Sgt. Vatisha Evans-Barken is a native of West Tennessee. She began her Law Enforcement career as a Deputy Sheriff with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, where she later became their first African American female Criminal Investigator in the history of the county. Not only does she protect the roads of Madison County, she is also a wife(William) and a mother (Collin), and a member of Woodlawn Missionary Baptist Church in Brownsville TN.

Take Time Out

Many times it seems that everywhere you go people are constantly moving. It seems as if people today are moving at the speed of light; too fast. So much hustle and bustle going on. Life as they say goes by so quickly. We are here today and gone tomorrow. It is a vapor as the bible says. Sometimes we need to take a minute and slow down.

Take time out. Enjoy your families, your friends, and those moments such as birthdays, holidays, vacations, and more. We are always worried about what's next. Start first by enjoying your "right now." For those who have children, take time out of your busy day to enjoy them. They will not be small forever. They will grow up.

If you are in a relationship or are married, take time out to enjoy your spouse or mate and do not take them for granted.

Learn to celebrate the people God places in your life, because they may not always be there. Also learn to take care of yourselves. Get those necessary check-ups, eat properly, exercise, and take time out to help those in need.

One of the most important thing of them all, is to take time out to pray. Have you ever needed anything from God? Sometimes we cannot hear the Voice of God because there is just too much going on in our lives. STOP. Slow down.

God wants us to spend quality time with Him instead of putting Him on speed dial. We only call Him when we are in trouble. God wants us to enter into that secret place with Him. Psalms 91:1 (KJV) -He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

As I reflect upon the highs and lows in my own life, I think of the times that I have ran into that "secret" place. But I had to take my own "Time Out". My timeout, is my place of refuge. It is a place of restoration. It is a place of renewed hope. Sometimes you have to find that quiet place that is uniquely your own. A place where you can sit at the feet of the King. God has a plan for each of our lives. Everyday let us strive to be more like him. Whatever you need it is in the Father. Let Him guide you as you continually seek Him. Treva R. Spiritual Leader PASTOR WESS MORGAN

Pastor Wess Morgan is the Associate Pastor of Celebration of Life Church located in Hendersonville TN. He was born in Pascagoula MS and is the father of four amazing children, “They are my inspiration in everything I do,” he shared. His parents are Pastor Joseph and Yolanda Morgan, and they serve as the Senior Pastors of Celebration of Life Church. Pastor Wess is a Stellar and Dove Award Nominee and was presented with the BMI Song of the year award in 2012 for his hit song, “I Choose to Worship,” which also reached No. 5 on the billboard. In his spare time, he enjoys rebuilding choppers and muscle cars with his father.

Pastor Wess Morgan is no stranger to the gospel mainstream media; he has made appearances on TBN, The Word Network, BET Gospel, The Gospel SuperFest, Super Bowl Gospel Celebration, and BET’s, The Show. His acting abilities are just as flawless as his musical talent, being featured in Tyler Perry’s production play, Laugh To Keep From Crying and cameo appearances in Treva Gordon’s stage play, Deception.

In his youth, Joel Wesley Morgan, p/k/a “Wess,” began traveling and singing with his two siblings and parents as they ministered the word of God in music, teaching and preaching in churches across the US. As a teen, Wess Morgan’s life took a turn for what appeared to be the worse.

He began using drugs and alcohol.

The use quickly turned to abuse, which eventually lead to several repeated jail sentences and time spent in recovery centers away from family and home. Although many people within the community had given up on Wess, his family had faith that God would rescue Wess and recover him from a grim lifestyle filled with uncertainties. Post recovery, Wess identified and embraced his mission to become an agent of change in the lives of people in need of transformation before and/or after drug and alcohol abuse. (www. wessmorgan.com) Pastor Wess is an anointed vessel of God. He hosts “Recovery Fest” at his home church in Hendersonville TN. 2013 will be the 2nd year for the newly ongoing festival with a concentrated focus on celebration and determination for recovering addicts. Survivors of this addiction will come from all around the world to convene to celebrate the end of National Recovery Month. The festival is a two day event including musical concerts by none other than Pastor Wess Morgan himself and his friends, also included will be seminars

on a range of topics such as addition, recovering strategies and techniques, relapse prevention, and coping skills.

In addition to his own ministry, Pastor Wess Morgan has helped numerous organizations in charitable events. For the 2nd year, he along with family, friends, and his band, have driven to Jackson Tennessee, and hosted an Annual Christmas Concert to help the State of Tennessee Department of Children Services. The proceeds from the concert has helped hundreds of children throughout West Tennessee have a Happy Christmas.

Pastor Wess shared, “I feel that the Body of Christ needs more transparency. I am trying to implement this in every platform afforded. Pastors are responsible for Kingdom Building but they are also responsible for bringing more hope and realness in the form of reality.” When asked what legacy he would like to leave on the world, he said, “Although I strive to be the best preacher and/or singer that I can be, my ultimate goal is to be known as someone who made a difference in the lives of people, beginning with my

family. I want my ministry to continue to be the most relevant and give audiences a life-changing experience.” If you have ever sat in one of his concerts, that is exactly what he does as the raspness of his voice along with a distinct southern delectable tone serenades one into the presence of the Lord .

“I am both honored and humbled to be selected as a Featured Spiritual Leader in Xcellence’s new and growing magazine considering the fact that I’ve made many bad choices in the past,” He stated. Pastor Wess, we are equally grateful, that in the midst of your busy schedule, you took the time to share your inspirational words with our Xcellence Community. Pastor Wess has several speaking engagements scheduled throughout the remainder of this year, including Bishop T.D. Jakes, “Woman Thou Art Loosed Conference 2013.”

Spiritual Leader pastor undrae johnson Pastor Undrae Johnson is the Senior Pastor of Family Life Fellowship Ministries of Brownsville Tennessee. He has been in ministry for over twenty years and pastoring for eight. He is a native of Stanton Tennessee and is married to his beautiful wife and best friend, Carletha Rena. They have three children, Martavious Unjanae, and Kylah.

Pastor Johnson is passionate about families and the community, he prides himself on offering a holistic ministry that minister to both the natural and

spiritual man. He is the recipient of the local NAACP Humanitarian Community Involvement Award and a member of the City’s Leadership Development Team. Their primary focus is to reflect upon outreach ministry for homes, communities, schools, churches, and the marketplace, locally, nationally, and internationally.

Pastor Johnson feels that the Body of Christ need leaders that are passionate about serving people and providing educational training for All areas of an individual’s life in which they may be lacking or needing to strengthen.

“Our roles as Pastors are to serve, teach, and train the Body of Christ to Love,” he stated. People need help in succeeding in life and we as believers are to be a help mate to one another.”We should always be willing to lend a helping hand to those in need,” said Pastor Johnson. His long-term vision and attribute to ministry is to develop an Institution of Higher Learning that will equip individuals in all areas of their life.

Pastor Johnson is an affiliated member of Xcellence, Inc. and is always willing and available to support the organization when asked. “It’s an honor and a very humbling experience to be selected as one of Xcellence Featured Spiritual Leaders,” he shared. Xcellence will continue to work closely with Pastor Johnson and Family Life Ministries to aid in his vision to take care of God’s people while continuing to grow the kingdom.

REVEREND ROBERT P. HARRIS, JR.

On March 1, 1957 God set into motion the plan to deliver a dynamic and powerful voice, one that would humbly and courageously deliver the Word of God to the Clarksville-Fort Campbell Area and it’s surrounding community. Robert P. Harris, Jr., accepted the call! He proudly serves as the Pastor of the First Missionary Baptist Church, Clarksville, TN. Pastor Harris instructs and guides this growing congregation of over 800 with a powerful testimony, a distinct leadership style, and a valued lifestyle of principles and integrity. Pastor Harris is the son of Mrs. Margaret Harris and the late, Mr. Robert P. Harris, Sr. He is married to Regina Dubose Harris and they have 4 children, Derek, Omar, Brandy and Billy (deceased).

Pastor Harris graduated from Northwest High School, Clarksville, TN where he was a star athlete, participating in both basketball and football, and was awarded a basketball scholarship to Mary Holmes Junior College, Mississippi; since that time he has completed studies at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville TN and American Baptist College of Nashville TN. He holds a Masters of Theological Studies from Faith Seminary in Tacoma Washington. Today Pastor Harris can still be found on the basketball court perfecting his love for the game of basketball; however, what he prides most is winning a “Championship for Christ” by preaching a prophetic word.

Although he has always had a love for Jesus, it was a tough road before he accepted that he was an anointed and appointed vessel of God. As he proudly shares his testimony of transparency and deliverance from a life of drugs, street activities and women, he knows that it was only by the grace of God that he stands to be a witness to the goodness of God, sparing his life, and having mercy on his soul. He is a visionary with proven results. His leadership helped to birth the Emmanuel Family Life Center, which is a community center that partners with agencies such as the YMCA, Department of Children's Services, and TN Voices for Children, name just a few of the many outreach initiatives that Pastor Harris, Emmanuel Family Life Center, and the First Missionary Baptist Church family supports.

Pastor Harris, the Emmanuel Family Life, and First Missionary Baptist Church are one of Xcellence’s newest affiliated members. We are excited about the work that God is going to perform through this connection. Look for even greater things to come from this visionary leader in the Clarksville Tennessee Community as well a national introduction of Pastor Harris and his relevant word for the people of God!

A Kingdom Covenant INTRODUCING bishop calvin b. lockett and pastor shamond scales

An Emotional Moment

As Bishop Calvin B. Lockett, the founding Pastor of Christ the Healer Church, located in Clarksville Tennessee, sat in his pastoral study along with Pastor Carl Livingston, Senior Pastor of Walnut Grove Baptist Church, and held pre-service discussions regarding their 15th Church Anniversary Celebration; there came a subtle knock at the door. To Bishop Lockett’s surprise entered Senior Pastor, Shamond Scales of the Zion Church. He had flown back early from his vacation in New York to celebrate the occasion with his home church family. In addition to Pastor Scales being a spiritual son to Bishop Lockett, he also was one of Christ the Healer Church Founding Members. Bishop Lockett could not hold back the tears as the young man walked into the office.

The relationship between Bishop Lockett and Pastor Scales is a unique one. At the age of eight, Pastor Scales was one of the seven charter members of Christ the Healer. He possessed an anoint-

ing that was noticeable at an early age. He accepted his call into ministry early in life and was licensed by Bishop Lockett at the age of 12. As a teenager, he was one of the most sought after teenage preachers in the nation. Not only is he an anointed preacher, he is also a gifted singer and musician.

The Interview Who Are You? Bishop Lockett: I am the 6th of 9 children born to Deacon Lue Henry & Minister Veola Lockett of Macon, Mississippi. I was raised in a Christian home and received Jesus as my Lord and Savior at 11 years old. I enlisted in the U.S. Army during my senior year in high school and served my country for over 15 years.

We held our first service at Christ the Healer on June 7, 1998 at the ballroom of a hotel outside of Clarksville. I was a bi-vocational pastor for about 3 1/2 years.

In 2001, the Lord called me to give up my military career to go into full-time ministry and the rest is history! I am married to the exquisite Lynnita Marchelle

Lockett (the love of my life and best friend) and we have three amazing children: Calvin Ezekiel, Carah Aleasha, and Ciara Lynn.

Pastor Scales: I am Pastor Shamond Scales of The Zion Church in Jackson, Tennessee. I am a native of Clarksville, Tennessee. I have been preaching for 12 years now and pastoring for about 2 years. Along with my preaching ministry, I am a singer and a songwriter. Simply put, I am a yielded vessel with a heart after God and a heart for His people.

What draws people to your churches or what makes your church distinct?

Bishop Lockett: The name Christ the Healer expresses what our church is all about. Over the years, there have been many who have been healed physically, spiritually, emotionally, financially and relationally. We aspire to create an atmosphere through our Music and Arts Department that will facilitate a move of God that will cause miracles to take place. Members who have joined our church have experienced God's presence the moment they opened the doors. Our ultimate goal is to create disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ through the teaching and preaching of God's word.

Pastor Scales: I believe that the power of God is what draws people to the church.

There are many great preachers and churches but ultimately God’s power is what makes the difference. We are simply facilitators of the glory of God, it is all about him, and the exaltation of his name in the earthly realm. Jesus said in John 12:32, And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all men unto me.

The Zion Church is distinct because we try our best to present God with the greatest presentation we can for the kingdom in a small, rural area. We pride ourselves in doing mega ministry in a small place. We are also a very balanced church where we are able to adopt the new contemporary flow of today’s church while holding on to the traditions of our forefathers.

What are your assignments in the Kingdom?

Bishop Lockett: Along with making disciples of Jesus, my assignment is to lead mankind into repentance (a change in mindset), revival, and restoration though healing and deliverance. In addition, the Lord has trusted me with the assignment of developing and shepherding great leaders.

Pastor Scales: I believe my assignment is to keep the importance of the Power of God before my generation. I have a spiritual charge to not just teach the word but to also flow in demonstration of power. I believe I am charged to show this generation that the healing and miracle power of God is still present and can be accessed.

Bishop Lockett: What was it like to pastor such an anointed young man so early? What did you do to prepare him for his assignment? It was a joy watching and assisting in the development of such a gift. Pastoring him kept me young at heart! His high-level energy and visionary abilities, always kept my creative juices flowing. To this day, he is instrumental in doing that.

I prepared him, first and foremost, by living a lifestyle of holiness and righteousness before him. I think it is important to, “Live the Word” and not just, “Preach the Word.” I also gave him one of the greatest gifts a preacher (or anyone else) could be given, an opportunity, and boy did he take advantage of his opportunities to preach, teach, and serve! Finally, I provided wisdom, counsel, and support of his ministry.

Bishop Lockett: As a teenager, he received preaching engagements and opportunities that you were not afforded. How did you handle his success while he was a member of your congregation? Those I license and ordain are much more than members of our church—I consider them spiritual sons and daughters. The apostle Paul said, “For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.”

1 Corinthians 4:15 (KJV) Pastor Scales is my son in the gospel. There are many times that I have laid hands on him and prayed that God would give him, “a double portion” of my spirit. Not only is he an extension of his family and his church, but he is a representative of me. I cannot tell you HOW PROUD I am of him! His is a TREMENDOUS gift to the Body! Do not go to glory without hearing him preach!

Pastor Scales: What was it like to grow up in Christ the Healer and to have Bishop Lockett as your shepherd? Growing up in Christ the Healer was great training ground for me. I am a founding member of the church and my standards on church come from my experience there. Being trained at Christ the Healer, I received prayer, fasting, and consecration as my foundational core.

Having Bishop Lockett as my pastor, was the greatest example I could have had.

Above being a great shepherd, preacher, and leader, he is a great man. There are countless things that he has taught me verbally and through instruction, but the greatest lesson was watching his lifestyle and how he lives the life he preaches about.

Bishop Lockett: What role(s) do you play in Pastor Scales' life now? Our relationship has not changed much as it relates to my responsibility to, “watch for his soul.” He seeks my wisdom, counsel, and confirmation before he makes any major moves in his life as I do with my pastor, Prophet T.J. Verdell, and spiritual mother, Prophetess Marcia Morrison. I also make myself available to listen and assist him in any way he needs.

Pastor Scales: You pastor, have one of the fastest growing churches in your area and your potential is unlimited. How important is it to stay connected to Bishop Lockett and what does it mean to have him as your pastor today? It is important that you maintain and keep the formula that got you to where you are. Being submitted to his leadership is what literally landed me here at this place and I believe that is one of the things that will keep me here and take me further. God, in his divine, will place people in your life to hold you accountable and to keep you focused. Bishop Lockett has been my spiritual father and covering, but also one of my biggest supporters. I believe everyone needs that in their life to be successful in ministry.

Bishop Lockett: There are anointed gifts in the Body of Christ that are lying dormant in congregations all over the world. What advice would you give to pastors who shepherd such gifts? I think that pastors have the responsibility to develop and mature the gifts in their congregations. In order to do this, we must have several things. First, we must have an unconditional love for our members to the degree that we care about their success.

Secondly, we must be secure enough within ourselves to not feel threatened by the anointing on the lives of others.

Pastor Scales: What advice would you give to those with great callings on their lives that are members of local congregations? My advice would be to submit to your leader and be faithful to the vision of the house. As you are faithful to your pastor’s vision, God will allow doors to open for you in your life. As you stay connected to your covering, God will be able to trust you with your own work and assignment. Therefore, my biggest advice is to be connected and submitted to the vision of the house and God will allow your vision to come to pass.

What makes your relationship special?

Bishop Lockett: Several characteristics make our relationship unique. First of all, we genuinely love each other as spiritual father and son. We support one another and care about each other’s success and well-being. We care about the church and the people of God. Finally, both of us have a passion for Jesus and a desire to please Him. The writer said in Ecclesiastes 12:13 (KJV): Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man, at the end of the day, that is what the Christian life is all about.

Pastor Scales: I have been able to see both the spiritual and natural sides of my Pastor. My father passed a couple of years ago and my Pastor has fulfilled the role of me having a father in my life. I have been blessed to travel with him over the years and we have shared some great memories doing both spiritual and recreational/fun things together. The thing that makes our relationship special is that it is one of great balance. Not only do we pray together, but we laugh together as well.

PASTOR JAMES FARMER

James T. Farmer Jr., is a native of Brownsville TN and the Senior Pastor of the Historic Woodlawn Missionary Baptist Church of Brownsville, Tennessee. He has been in ministry for 14 years and holds a Diploma of Theology from American Baptist College (2006) and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management from Bethel University (2009). His beautiful wife is Jamonica Harris-Farmer of Aberdeen MS, and they have 2 children, Dwayne (21) and Jaszmine (20), and one grandson, Jaylen Dwayne. In his spare time, he enjoys, fishing, horseback riding, golf, running, and exercising.

In January 1999, Pastor Farmer accepted his ministerial call of preaching. He preached his first sermon that same year in March at the New St. Luke M.B. Church of Jackson, TN, under the leadership of Dr. Dennis E. Blalock. In August of 2000, he became the Senior Pastor of St. Paul M.B. Church of Medon, TN and served there faithfully for 12 years. In 2012, Pastor Farmer was presented with an opportunity to make an impact within his hometown community. Upon diligent prayer and seeking God’s face for his next direction, on July 7, 2012, Pastor Farmer was elected as the Senior Pastor of Woodlawn M.B. Church.

He is a Member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and serves on several boards. Among them are: Board of Directors for American Baptist College (Jackson Extension Campus), Charter Board Member and Western Regional Vice-President of the Moderator’s Division for Tennessee Baptist Missionary & Educational Convention, Inc. Pastor Farmer’s inspiration is to help people and to serve the needs of people. His passion stems from his leadership style, The Servant Leader. He believes that a good leader must possess a heart and a compassion for people. When asked about what he feels the Body of Christ needs most, he advised, “I feel that what the Body of Christ needs most are Anointed & Spirit-Filled Leaders to teach & preach Sound Biblical Doctrine. People don’t need to be

entertained or made to feel good; they need the Preached Word of God. I spend countless hours each week studying and preparing to feed the people that God has blessed me to serve. My job is to set the table and allow them to feast on the Word until they are full.”

In addition to the charge of kingdom building and increasing the Body of Christ, what else should Pastor’s add? Pastor Farmer shared, “I like the analogy that the Apostle Paul uses in Ephesians 4:11-16. Spiritual Gifts by way of the Pastor/ Teacher are given to the Body of Christ to equip disciples to work the ministry of the church. My specific assignment and charge is to help usher the Body of Christ into a discipleship-based lifestyle through the Preaching & Teaching of the Word of God. By doing this; they will work the ministry of the church to help produce other disciples. He would like to leave a footprint on the world by being remembered as a man that was Ministry-minded. “Ministry is about meeting the needs of the people. I don’t want to be remembered for building large buildings or even for my preaching, but I want people to remember that I cared about them and that my purpose here was to do as Christ did, meet the needs of the people.” Luke 4:18 says, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.”

Pastor Farmer’s long-term accomplishment would be to start a Magnet Charter School that would also house a Performing Arts Academy. The school would target helping children to excel in the core subjects of Reading, Math, and Science while also helping to develop children at a young age in the Performing Arts field.

Pastor Farmer is an affiliated church organizational member of Xcellence, Inc., and when asked about the value that Xcellence has added to his ministry, he shared, “Xcellence has assisted me with advertising and marketing concepts that have been very instrumental in helping me share the vision that God has given me for the Body of Christ.”

OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT LEADER: SGT. ALPHONSO NEWBERN

I am blessed to have a partner so spiritually anointed that he initiated Monday morning bible study for us, and in our line of work, prayer is needed. My friend and partner Sgt. Alphonso Newbern; together we investigate crimes for the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. The world doesn’t realize we don’t stop being police at the end of day, this is a 24/7 job and continues while shopping, dining and even at church.

In this day and age, having armed law enforcement

in your congregation is not a bad idea, especially for the rural locations such as St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church where Sgt. Newbern is a member and provides security. Alphonso Newbern is known as Deacon Newbern at St. Paul where he serves as Chairman over the Deacon Ministry, Trustee Chairman, Oversees the Kitchen Committee, Bus Driver, Choir member, provides an ear for listening, a shoulder to lean on, always there as a friend and will give you his last.

I’ve witnessed Sgt. Newbern praying with a suspect after we interviewed the suspect; I’ve witnessed Deacon Newbern with children at his church looking up to him as a father because he taught them how to pray. As quoted by my friend and partner Alphonso Newbern “With 28 years in Law Enforcement and I’m still alive and well, it was nothing but God that brought me this far”. As always, it is better to be too safe than unsafe.

We salute Sgt. Newbern for his dedication and commitment in making our communities safe. You are truly Xceptional in our eyes! Thanks for all that you do to serve!

XCELLENCE COMMUNITY NEWS

On April 6th, 2013 in Everett, Washington, we welcomed Xcellences’ 2nd Chapter launching: “Bringing the Community Together.” This was a large success for Xcellence in taking a leap across the Nation to spread their services and outreach to create Xcellence Communities abroad. Xcellence welcomed Everett’s first Regional Coordinator, Maria Luchsinger.

Bringing the Community Together was hosted by Xcellence National Member Director, Monica Dunnagan, M.S. and the facility was provided by the Comcast Arena Conference Center in downtown Everett, Washington. Xcellence is committed to serving communities in every state and plans to offer mentorships, advertisement, and develop programs to enhance the education of children and adults. In order to provide these services and give back to the community of Everett, this event hosted a venue for small business owners, teachers, scholars, volunteers, doctors, as well as community members, families, and friends to enjoy a full day of networking and share how they support the community.

Maria Luchsinger was a featured guest speaker and shared with the group how she administers the program, XCEL Kids Forward in Everett. Each Xcellence program is modified to fit the community in which it serves. Maria formed a partnership with Rachel Green (Educational Coordinator) at Mercy Housing in Lynwood, Washington.

This partnership created the XCEL kids program which is an afterschool tutoring program. Through the program Maria and Rachel have teamed together to teach a community of Russian speaking adults how to learn English and help their children with homework. The event unfolded with small business owners setting up and displaying their products. Xcellence would like to share with you the wonderful Everett community that joined us that day:

XCEL KIDS FORWARD Literacy partnership with Mercy Affordable Housing Projects

By Maria Luchsinger How do we encourage parents who speak a foreign language to learn English so they can help their children in school? This question is on the minds of many people today including the homework coordinators and case managers at Housing Projects across the nation. Children who can’t read end up in our juvenile delinquent system, and eventually prison, and in startling numbers.

Rachel Green and I developed a modified program for the Russian population at our local project. First, Rachel translated the Rock Star Reading Program illustrating the importance of reading aloud with children, into Russian for the parents. This program was made possible by a grant from the Everett School District Foundation in Everett, Washington. Next, our goal was to teach the children the most frequently used words to improve their reading ability by having them interact with their parents. We made game cards by putting the English word on one side and Russian on the other.

The parents and children would take turns rolling dice and whatever number they rolled, would be the number of word cards they would choose. They would then move forward according to how many words they could pronounce correctly.

By having the words available in both languages, it encouraged the parents to play along with their children.

We had a Literacy Night for parents and invited them for dinner and a presentation. Rachel took the parents in a separate room to give presentations; while I took the children to make game boards and read aloud to them. We gave everyone game cards to take home.

Older children can also help younger ones to learn English. For example, there was a 4th grade boy who spoke perfect Russian and also English. He was translating for a four year old who did not speak English at all. We want to make a difference by exposing the Russian parents more and more to English so they will be able to help their children and they function better in American society.

I am going to continue working at this local housing project once a month by reading aloud, and bringing art and music activities related to the reading. I recently took a survey to find out what the children’s interests are so we can make books available in those areas to encourage the children to read more. Our long term goal is to offer the Read Aloud presentation for translation in other languages to other Housing residents across the country.

A Community Event would not be complete unless the children have the opportunity to share what they learned at KJ Martial Arts & Learning Center info@martialartsjk.com Katarina Kim. “Bringing the Community Together Event” marked the first performance for this group of talented Martial Arts students. They displayed what they learned to their community while encouraging others to speak out against Bullying. Xcellence community will share more of these amazing students in our next magazine, so watch for them along with many others who will stand against Bullying.

Our Community gathering could not continue without providing exciting new innovative ways in which people from the very small to older adults can stay fit and change their lifestyles. Lloyd & Geri Lagutang offered samples of ADVO CARE, an all natural energy drink “SPARK.” They also and provided success stories such as Lori Defoe in how she transformed her life and her health through ADVO CARE & SHAKEITLATINSTYLE.

Rosella Hardy brought her group of beautiful dancers to the stage demonstrating how much fun and excitement exercising can be through Zumba. BOOK MY FUTURE SCHOLARSHIP 1st recipients named

Last year during Xcellence 4th Annual Gala, we introduced our new scholarship program for postsecondary students. This Fall we will award Ms. Taylor Noel of Cordova TN and Ms. Mahkayla Grogan of Memphis TN. Taylor will attend Tennessee State University in Nashville TN this Fall and Mahkayla will attend Savannah College of Art & Design in Atlanta GA. Both students will receive $500 to aid in the purchase of books. Join us in congratulating both of these two young ladies and wish them the best success in their future endeavors.

Taylor Noel is a graduate of Cordova High School in Cordova, Tennessee. She will be attending Tennessee State University, where she plans to study Psychology/Forensic Science. Some of her activities while in high school were cheerleading, drama, church health fair, and Bridge Builders. In Taylor’s winning essay, she stated: “As a daughter of a single mother, my mother has always instilled in me the importance of education. My mother taught me the value of education through what her great grandfather instilled in her when she was a little girl. He told her education would open a multitude of doors in the future. I did not understand then what she was telling me as a child. I realize now that my family has always been a stickler for education. Our family’s motto is ‘Education is the key to all doors.’

Taylor would like to eventually have her own private practice and be able to give hope to people who may suffer from different psychological illnesses, she wants to promote self-esteem and strengthen families and communities.

Mahkayla Grogan is a graduate of Bolton High School in Arlington, Tennessee. She will be attending Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where she plans to study Cartoon Animation/Game Art. Some of her activities while in high school were Beta Club, Bridge Builders, and National Honor Society. In Mahkayla’s winning essay, she stated: “I give back to my community by getting myself involved in my environment around me. I joined multiple community service organizations and did things like going around the city helping those with any problems they have, organized books for the library, supervised a race for my school, helped build a house for people who couldn’t afford to pay for it themselves, and packaged food and sent it to those in need. I also did things at church like usher, serve food, take up offering, and helped with fundraisers. I love to help those who need it.”

TONEY BENARD JENKINS You’ve seen him previously in other issues, you’ve heard his name for years, but now you get to know him much more in-depth and personal. Get to know and love the person that we are so privileged to have leading our Men of Xcellence division. Mr. Jenkins became affiliated with Xcellence, Inc. from the inception of the company. He was friends of the founder, Mrs. Angella Banks, and saw the vision, in which she had for the company long-term. As it stands today, with the company celebrating its 5th year of operation, he is yet a faithful leader and board member of the company. When asked why he supports Xcellence, he stated, “Because I trust the leader and her integrity, PERIOD!” Mr. Toney Benard Jenkins (42) is the Owner and Principal Partner of Fit Enterprises. He was born in Washington DC and today he currently resides in Los Angeles, CA. Mr. Jenkins holds a BS in Sociology. He is the father of two kids, one son, Tracey Benard, and one daughter, Toni Christina.

When asked to tell us about who Toney is, he responded, “At a very young age I knew I wanted to impact people lives.

As a lad, it was my dancing that affected people most often.

My father would wake my brothers and I from a dead sleep to dance for his friends, co-workers, and colleagues during many of his weekend house parties with our mom. It was always a thrill for us to entertain. As I grew, sports became more important to me and I began impacting fans that way.

Football and track & field were my sports of choice in high school. My talents led me to Utah State University and later an opportunity to play for the Dallas Cowboys.”

As far back as Mr. Jenkins can remember he has always felt he was a leader. He recalls his leadership skills being developed as far back as the 5th grade, “I was the only black kid in my grade and was voted as the Class President. However, it was short lived due to my father’s job transfer, but yet I knew then that I was truly someone special.”

In order for leaders to be successful, they must also be effective. I love being an entrepreneur and know that I have a responsibility to lead others as well. Leaders also have moments in which they must make critical decisions that others may not view favorable. “In my life, I have had to make some hard decisions. My most memorable experience is both a great highlight and an ultimate low. My great highlight started as a short prayer while on a vacation in the state of Louisiana after seeing the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

The prayer was Lord, if there is something I am supposed to do for this city, open a door. Twenty minutes later, my business mentor and partner, Mr. Warren Sawyers, called and advised that he was having dinner with a businessman that needed to recruit 200+ employees and wanted to know if I

could help. I accepted the assignment based on the prayer I prayed. Not knowing that my wife, at the time, would not agree to me accepting this job; it literally caused my marriage to die. Therefore, losing my marriage was my ultimate low. As a leader, we must all choose our battles wisely.

Today I can confidently say, God’s hand was on us the entire time and now we are both happier as people and as friends.

My commitment to the contract led to more great business opportunities” he shared.

“Our youth of today need mentors and guidance for their life’s journey ahead,” said Mr. Jenkins. Are there any words you would like to share with them? “Yes, to learn how money works; so they don’t have to work so hard for it. Learn how to make your money work harder for you. Lean on a Certified Financial Advisor to navigate your way, especially when you start receiving credit cards! Stay Debt Free as long as you can. It keeps you FiT to do everything, and I do mean everything you want to do.”

Mr. Jenkins stated that his footprints are those of his two children. “How they live their lives will be a direct reflection of their dad, both good and bad. As a business leader my footprint will be in the likes of creating legacy for millions of others.” he shared.

Xceptional Man master sergeant adam white

June 2013 Mr. Adam White celebrated his retiring of the United States Airforce after 20 years of service. He was employed with the Department of Defense in Airfield Management. Throughout his 20 years, he moved through the rankings to hold the title of Master Sergeant. He is a native of Brownsville TN and currently resides in Sumter, South Carolina at the Shaw Air Force Base along with Chaundra his wife of 17 years and two children Kiana and Adam. He is the son of Laverne Young. “It’s a beautiful yet humbling feeling to have served my country and retired at the nearing age of 40, however I haven’t made many more plans right now other than spend time with my wife and kids and make up for precious moments I’ve missed,” stated Mr. White candidly.

His hobbies are teaching, coaching, playing sports, spending time with family, and tinkering on old hot rods.

Sergeant White advised that after high school his goal was to join the USAF, complete one 4-year term, and then call it quits, but little did he know that things would turn out differently. Today he is a testament of God favoring him through many world-wide journeys.

His most memorable experience as a leader was when he found himself helping a co-worker throughout a difficult time with personal issues. “I mentored while yet guiding through the process to ensure that it did not continue to impact their career to the point of detriment” he shared.

When asked what words would he like to share with other younger individuals and the footprint he would like to leave on the world, he stated, “ If there is one thing I would like to share with today’s youth, it is; you can achieve anything regardless of your upbringing. If you believe in yourself, work hard, have respect for yourself, listen to your parents/guardians, and get an education, there’s nothing you can’t accomplish. Once you have achieved the goal(s) you set, always give back to the community.

I plan to leave my footprint on the world by teaching my kids, nieces, and nephews, the life lessons I’ve learned. This is the generational gift that I want to share with them so that the gift, keeps on giving. I pray that they will value it most important so that it will prevent them from the pitfalls of life in which I faced, and help them to become more successful and live a life that is rich and meaningful.

I am a supporter of Xcellence and believe in the works of the founder, Angella Banks because community is important. Understanding that everyone has a story, although they may have different backgrounds, financial statuses, and educational levels, ALL of us carry the responsibility of making this world a better place!

Xceptional Man william derail barken

William Derail Barken is an entrepreneur, husband, and community leader. He is married to Vatisha Evans-Barken and has two kids, McKenna and Collin. William was born in Brownsville, Tennessee to William and Debbie Barken and has one sibling; Ms. Betty Ann Barken.

He is a faithful member of Woodlawn Missionary Baptist Church and serves as the Chairman of the Trustees Board. He is the owner of Barken Lawn Service, which provides landscaping services to both residential and commercial customers. Through his hard work and dedication, he has landed many large projects, such as Landscaping newly built hotels (Hampton Inns-Hilton Hotels). In addition, he also does large Excavation Projects, Asphalt Paving, and Demolition.

Growing up in a smaller rural area, gave William what he feels became an edge in life. His dad was a farmer, while his mother traveled over 40 miles daily to work in a factory for over 20 years. He grew up not having much, but both parents worked really hard to make sure he had what he needed to survive. Without realizing it at the time, his parent’s work ethic and career choices would influence his future. He attended Bailey Elementary school K-8, which was located outside of the city limits. He shares, “this little country school made and molded me into who I am today.” Because the school was so small, he was able to have one on one time with staff which even included the principal. While attending Bailey Elementary School, he was introduced to the 4-H club. He participated in Public Speaking, Cattle Judging, and 4-H camp, which provided him with his first time overnight experience without his parents. He believes that his participation in 4-H taught him how to become a responsible individual and how to have respect for others. He won many different awards while competing through 4-H and because of the family atmosphere at Bailey School, he was pushed to excel and be the best he could be.

Once entering Haywood High School, things were totally different. It was many more kids, and the larger school brought about many changes as well as some challenges. He recalls trying out for basketball, “I tried out for the basketball team my freshman year and was cut, tried out for baseball my sophomore year and was cut. I loved sports, but this was very disappointing, it was my parents that told me not to give up. They knew how much I loved baseball, so he tried out for the team again, under a different coach, and made the team. This taught me that if there’s something I truly want, to never give up on my dreams and to never quit.” He realized that even though you may have the skills, and it may appear to be the right time, it might not be the right season. After graduating, he realized that a 4-year college was not something that he wanted to pursue, so he attended West Tennessee Business College located in Jackson TN, and earned a technical degree in Micro Computers.

William would continue to work several jobs and excel in leadership. It was in 1991 that he joined Coca-Cola Bottling Company and began as a route delivery driver. His hard work would lead him to management with the company and a total tenure of over 20 years.

Throughout this time, I suffered some personal challenging times.

My ex-wife and I had prayed for kids after several miscarriages. We were finally hopeful at 4 months into her pregnancy that we would parent a healthy child, only to be disappointed one more time. She went into labor early and gave birth to a stillborn child. We had an opportunity to hold our baby boy and touch his tiny fingers before making funeral arrangements. This was a very hurtful and humbling time in my life in which I cried and prayed out to God. Soon thereafter, we began to grow apart and later divorced. Today, God has blessed me with two healthy kids, and I am forever grateful to him for granting me the gift of parenthood.

Today I am reaping the rewards of hard work, and living a life in which I acknowledge God for who he is and the gifts that he has blessed me with. “My horses, cattle, and hunting dogs, provides an enjoyable country life for my family and I to enjoy almost on a daily basis. Myfarm reminds me of the foundational values in which I was instilled with as a young child. The generational training that I received as a child is now continuing on to other generations to come.

I have taken seriously the opportunities I’ve been granted in life. I am active in my church and in my community, assisting organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club” he shared.

Mr. Barken’s story is one of trials and triumph, the key is to stay diligent. The race is not given to the swift, but to the one that endures to the end. We thank you for your story and your proven leadership Mr. Barken and honor you as an Xceptional Man.

Xceptional Man VINCENT HARVELL

I’M NO SUPERSTAR It was mid-morning as I entered the office of Haywood County School Board office located in Brownsville TN to meet with their Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Deputy Superintendent, Mr. Vincent Harvell. As he stood to shake my hands, I immediately felt somewhat intimidated due to his size. He stood about 6’5 in height and had a medium build. As we settled down into our conversation and began to dialogue about Mr. Harvell’s personal and professional life, I quickly understood that in front of me sat a gentle giant with an abundant heart for family, youth, education, and community.

One of the first topics that we discussed was how he started his career and his former alumni. He proudly shared with me his testimonial about being selected for a basketball scholarship to attend Lambuth University in Jackson Tennessee. He became silent to embrace an emotional moment as he stated, “I was previously cut and then after speaking with the coach, was given a second chance to play. A recruiter came to watch the other player, but was so engrossed with my talent, that I ended up receiving a scholarship, he then smiled and said, I’m No Superstar, it was God’s Favor.”

It was very clear from that moment forward, that I truly connected with Mr. Harvell’s heart and passion. He grew up in the Edgehill Projects of inner city Nashville TN. He enjoyed playing basketball so much as a hobby that it turned into his passion. He shared, “I would go to the Easley Community Cen-

ter, and play basketball for hours at a time, from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm, it was my escape from everything around me.” We expounded upon the fact that our youth needed the same rescuing today as we both were privileged to receive as youth.

“When you feel limited to your surroundings, it’s hard to envision something greater for yourself; our kids need exposure, stated Mr. Harvell.”

Acknowledging the blessings and favor upon his life, Mr. Harvell explains, “If someone would have told me even 5 years ago that I would be at this career level, handling the many important day to day operational financials of an entire county’s school system, I would’ve said, there’s no way.” However, he admonishes the fact that God does not make mistakes and that he is exactly where he is suppose to be for this time and season of his life. When asked about his future career, he excitedly stated, “Oh he’s not done with me yet, there’s a whole lot more to come from Vincent Harvell. I’ll handle it the same way I always have in getting there, and that is, to leave myself open to God’s will.”

Mr. Harvell is married to Marie Morton Harvell, together they have two beautiful daughters, Olivia and Victoria. Olivia is currently attending Austin Peay University, completing a nursing degree, and Victoria works in the accounting department for the Haywood County School System. He has one two-year-old granddaughter, Jayla, whom he adores. “She can get any of my spare time,” he said as he smiled and showed me several of her adorable toddler pictures. He is an active and faithful member of St. Paul M.B. Church of Brownsville TN. In closing, we both agreed on a common scripture, “For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.” (Luke 12:48) I learned a valuable lesson from Mr. Harvell and that is that you do not have to be a “Superstar” to be a leader, make an impact and difference in the lives of others.

The key is to always trust and believe that you are in the appointed place, at the appointed time, using the anointed gift, in which God has blessed you to receive.

Nothing has been more fulfilling for me than having my peers come up to me and thank me for helping them through their difficult times or improve as an athlete, student, or person.

Those are the moments I cherish the most.”

Mr. Knowles chose his profession because he was interested in finance and was naturally rather good at the work. The firm he chose was specifically selected based upon the greater good it serves. “The money earned by myself and my associates at Cascade will eventually all be put towards charity (specifically through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation), meaning that the more successful I am as an investor the more lives I can indirectly help influence,” he stated.

Xceptional Man

What has been your most memorable experience as an effective leader?

Mr. Knowles shared his most memorable experience he has had as a leader, “About a month ago, after playing my final game of baseball which I loved so much, I sat on the field, and tears came to my eyes because it was over. One of my younger teammates who I had spent countless hours helping both on and off the field came up to me and sat down as well.” He began crying as he told me through his tears, “I just want to say thanks for everything you’ve given me, just thanks for everything…you changed my life Will.”

He admitted that nothing meant more to him than hearing those words and that it is something he will always cherish and fondly remember.

In closing, Mr. Knowles had this to share with the youth of today, “I would say that every person always has a choice. Every individual has the ability to make their lives better by fighting for what they desire or think is right. You will fall down, but keep going. You will fail, but failure is only permanent if you refuse to learn from it. Life may never be perfect, but never get discouraged. I hope that the footprint I leave on this earth is one of an individual who succeeded based on his own merits and one who always gave more of himself than was required of him. I think if everyone was willing to sacrifice just a little more for those around them the world would be a much better place.”

William plans are to work hard towards his goals, but never ignoring those around him along the way. He believes that being a successful professional should never come in the way of being a good man. By helping those around him while he works toward running his own firm, he will also touch many lives along the way.

We have no doubt that Mr. Knowles will be successful in his endeavors to own his own firm. He plans to give back through both his time and money to those who can truly benefit from his help.

Per Mr. Knowles, “If I am blessed to be an influential individual I plan to try and rally policy makers as well as other important figures to never settle for the status quo but continually push toward improving conditions for families and children across the country.”

He supports Xcellence because he believes that helping families create stability through solid economic grounds is vital. Further, God ought to always come first, which is what makes Xcellence stand out as an organization,” shared Mr. Knowles. We are thankful for men such as Mr. Knowles. MR. WILLIAM KNOWLES Meet Mr. William Knowles of Los Angeles CA. Mr. Knowles is an Investment Analyst and employed with Cascade Investments/BGI. He holds a Masters in Finance and Bachelors in Economics.

He recently graduated from Claremont McKenna College just a month ago having earned both a BA in Economics and MA in Finance in 4 years while earning Cum Laude recognition. Academics were just a small part of who he is and what he accomplished. He was also a 4-year starter for the varsity baseball team and served as team captain for 2 years as voted by his peers. He was also very involved with the school in other leadership aspects such as being a Resident Assistant and holding numerous on and off-campus jobs. These were minor things that Mr. Knowles felt necessary to do in assisting his family during their times of financial struggle.

Mr. Knowles future goals include running his own investment firms with over $1 billion in assets under management and having a non-profit organization focused on eliminating childhood obesity. “I am driven to lead by example and fulfill my full potential as a person. I believe that God blessed me with a unique skill set that can be used to glorify Him, but only through hard work and perseverance. Each day is another opportunity to work towards my goals, which are difficult to attain and lofty. I am inspired everyday through helping those around me and continuing to push forward.” Shared Mr. Knowles When asked about recognizing he was a leader and his chosen profession, he stated, “I realized that I had a knack for leadership while in high school where I was actively involved with Student Government, community service projects and being the captain of our baseball team.

Ese Morrison is the President and CEO of 353 Enterprises. 353 Enterprises is a multi-media production company (photography, videography, web design, and development). He holds a Bachelor in Business Administration with an accounting specialization. He was born in Lagos Nigeria and moved to Nashville Tennessee at the age of nine.

He shared that his entrepreneurial spirit pushes him to learn at least one new skill per year. “I love to gain as much knowledge as possible and satiate my thirst for knowledge. My hobbies include cooking and media research. I also work with churches in the community in an effort to improve their media production by educating their media team on equipment and resources available, and/or performing some hands on upgrades. One of my dreams was to turn my hobby into a revenue generated business (now I have – multi-media production).”

Mr. Morrison speaks about when he realized he was a leader. “Before starting my business, I spent 8 years in management in a Healthcare IT environment. In that capacity, I learned that in order to be a good leader, one has to be trustworthy, a good communicator and have the ability to inspire others. I stepped out on faith and decided to start my own business because I wanted to make an impact on the community, the church, and the youth.”

His most memorable experience as an effective leader came when he began working with a young lady that aspires to do graphic designing. “I have been working with her since her freshman year in college and have seen tremendous strides in not only her work but in her daily life. She recently graduated and is currently working with the Frist Museum in Nashville TN.” His words of motivation for the youth today is, “Pursue what you are passionate about. Do what you love and you will never have to “work” a day in your life.” He personally aspires to touch as many lives as possible in a positive manner. He shared a spiritual scripture from the book of Mark, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” He also added that it is twofold, that one should also “Love thy neighbor as thyself.”

There is no greater commandment greater than this.

Love is an action word, therefore love should be shown by the works that one do. He plans to leave a legacy through his works within church ministries and by working with today’s youth. He is also currently planning several outreach programs for this year.

Mr. Morrison is a huge supporter of Xcellence, Inc., and has dedicated and donated numerous hours of his time and services to the growth and development of our company. He currently serves on our Marketing Team as the Vice-President of our Web Development Department. Words cannot express the love and appreciation that we hold for Mr. Morrison. “I partnered with Xcellence because their goals and mission is right in line with my vision, not only for the community but for humanity as a whole,” stated Mr. Morrison. Xceptional Man jimmy donald

Mr. Jimmy Lee Donald is a native of Humboldt TN and the son of Richard Donald and Moralee (Bond) Donald. He currently resides in Brownsville TN with his wife Kathy Louise Donald. He is a retired educator, community advocate, and businessman. For over 36 years, Mr. Donald has dedicated his life to the educational system, teaching, training, and mentoring youth in both the states of Missouri and Indiana. He completed his degree from the Historical Black College/University (HBCU), Lane College located in Jackson TN, with a Major in Physical Education and a Minor in Biology through a football scholarship. He also holds a Masters of Arts in School Administration and a Specialty Degree in Wellness from Ball State University in Muncie Indiana.

He is a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and attends the Friendship Baptist Church.

Among his accomplishments is 36 years of service to the Marion County Community Schools, 28 years of service to the Marion Boys Golf, which included leading the team to 3 Sectional Championships, 4 Regional Championships, and 2 Time State Runner Up Tournaments. On July 14, 2007, he received the State of Indiana Distinguished Hoosier Award declared by Governor Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. for his commitment to the state of Indiana and the many lives he touched. Upon his retirement, he returned back South to Brownsville TN, an adjacent rural community near his hometown of Humboldt. He built his dream home and started his dream business.

Mr. Jimmy’s focus has always been on health and helping others stay active and physically fit. Therefore, it was an easy decision when he was faced with the decision of what his next venture in life would be. Along with his wife, they purchased a building and opened Mr. Jimmy’s Community Farmer’s Market. Outside stands a modern brick building but inside is every element of a traditional farmers market and deli shop. You can find Mr. Jimmy Monday thru Saturday smiling and working as he serves the people of the community with fresh cold cuts, salads, and traditional candies that reminds one of their childhood memories. The market even houses inside and outside seating for individuals that wish to take on the traditional ambiance even more.

Mr. Jimmy shared, “Today, I find myself working harder than I ever did before. In an area where African-American business ownership is very low, I wanted to be an example to the others that if you have a vision, all you have to do is start. I’ve always inspired others that they can fulfill their dreams to the fullest and be a part of an economic-development movement to build legacies for their families, such as me. Mr. Jimmy’s Community Farmer’s Market is more than just another business; it represents my love and commitment to the people. Both my wife and I have served the educational system for years and now it is time for us to serve the community. We are active participants in community outreach, assisting in the funding and support of several organizations through donations such as: Crestview Nursing Home, TN Technology Center at Whiteville, and Friendship Baptist Scholarship Fund, and more.”

100 Years of Service Meet Dr. Kelly Hudson

Dr. Kelly Hudson, has been a volunteer and advocate for the American Cancer Association for years. Dr. Hudson helps the American Cancer Society (ACS) raise thousands every year through her “A Night of Hope Gala.” This year on May 4, 2013, celebrated 4 years of the gala’s assistance with awareness and meeting the needs of cancer survivors in the NW Region of Washington State. She shares with us the wonderful work that ACA provides for children all over our nation who are battling cancer and here is Dr. Hudson’s story: I was born in Bartow, Florida but raised in Eaton Park, Florida which is a small oneroad part of town where a little girl like me should not have succeeded. I was given up for adoption at birth, lived in foster care for almost 2 years and by the grace of God, ended up back with family (adopted by my great aunt). As a matter of fact, I am still unsure how all of that happened, but nonetheless, I survived and should have changed my middle name to perseverance!

I was never a high achiever in terms of grades but I was always at the top of my class in terms of participation and effort! Working hard either for me or for other people has always been a focus of helping make the world a better place for all of us to live in.

I attended Puget Sound Christian College (no longer an institution) from 19861989, studied Psychology and Youth Ministries/Music. I decided that I was not finished so I chose to go back to school in 1999 to the University of Phoenix to finish my undergraduate degree and did so in Business Management; graduated in 2001.

Shortly before the end of that road I felt there was more, so off to grad school I went. I was in search of that elusive Psychology degree so I applied & enrolled in Saybrook Graduate School & Research Center; one of the best Humanistic schools in the country! I felt privileged to work under some of the best known names in psychology; Dr. Stanley Krippner (Dream specialist), Dr. Natalie Rogers (daughter of Carl Rogers, artist, author, expressive arts genius), and many more! Shortly before the ink was dry on my master’s degree, which I completed ahead of schedule, I began again. My mentor, masters & dissertation chair, and friend, Dr. Theopia Jackson encouraged me to keep going, so I applied once again!

I completed my doctoral degree in a shorter period of time because I was determined to get it done. I needed to do this not just for me but for my family, especially my grandmother who without a doubt was one of my strongest supporters! I distinctly remember her telling me, “Baby, I am getting my knees operated on to make sure that I am able to not only walk well again but to be at your graduation, so if I do that, you will not quit, you will walk across that stage with me watching you from the front row!” So in June 2010, she was right where she said she would be; front & center!

One month after graduation, I was nominated to lead a group of community volunteers in the fight against cancer as the chair of the annual charity event; American Cancer Society, Night of Hope Gala! I just recently stepped down after 3 years in this capacity. The Night of Hope Gala in 2011 was its 2nd year in which no one from

the first year stuck around to show me or my team the ropes. We were handed these huge manuals and told “go for it!” Fortunately for me, there were several of us that were willing to give it a try. In three years we were able to raise over $286,000 for the fight against cancer by reaching out to everyone we knew to help us make a difference. The funds raised went toward, patient services (wigs, makeup), gas cards (to get patients to & from treatment), and children’s camps (children living with cancer) among other services!

When I started volunteering with American Cancer someone asked me, why? Why volunteer your time? Have you been touched by cancer? At the time I said, not directly but through friends or friends of friends. Today I say, yes I have. My birthmother passed away from Lung cancer in January 2013. I know that we did not have the traditional mother-daughter relationship but we were very close friends, something that was extremely powerful for me as a person and as a woman! I will forever be in the fight of life to help find a cure and not just because my mother died from the disease but because it is so much bigger than I am. I wake up every day asking that I am challenged to do things better or differently than I did the day before. I am a vessel for whatever God has in store for me. I do not need a stage. I just need to know that somewhere, someone is being touched by something I either said or did. Will I know or find out what or who was touched, perhaps not but in the long run it is not important to me, but what is…I made a difference!

I recently became a yoga instructor at ShakeItLatinStyle and anyone that knows me, this role does not appear to fit my personality. But what I realized…it does, because I love to teach and more importantly I love to learn! The difference, the changes, the ripple effect is not only happening with lives that I may touch but my life is being affected in so many tremendous ways, how can I be anything but grateful!

I was recently reconnected with an old friend via Face book; this was his first message to me; “I want to thank you personally for being an inspiration to me. Last week as I stumbled over my 6th grade autograph book, I got to your message to me "study hard and you can do whatever you want". That went a long way with me. You were already an advocate for education, even to a little 6th grader from Oscar J. Pope. So Kelly, you are more than just an Eaton Park little girl to us, you are an inspiration to many” ~ Eddie Hadley, (US Navy Personnel). This is what I live for, without recognition, without judgment, just want to make a difference in any way I can!

In retrospect, these are the things that I learned about myself. I am always willing to learn, and will always be a student of life, learning the lessons it has to offer me. I also know what it means to give back. After plugging away for my education, I learned that I can lead. It was an amazing ride, something I will never forget for the rest of my life! I will always be involved as I know I love to help and want to make a difference.
