The NeXt Level

From the Publisher The Fall season has just begun, and we only have three months left to maximize 2015. Now is the time to push forward! It’s okay if you got off track, but you can still finish strong. There’s no time like the present time. You will feel good knowing that what you set out to accomplish in January, can still be achieved. For those that are on track, now is the perfect time to start planning sessions for your 2016 calendar. There are many things that you have envisioned for your life, from career dreams, starting your own business to family legacy planning, etc… However, you are your own biggest procrastinator. Every day, every act, every step, MUST BE INTENTIONAL! Forget about all your could haves, would haves, and should haves, they are a thing of the past. Set your focus on what is in front of you, the reward will be far greater. Remember, I am cheering you on! Do your best work, so that it will be reflected in the Spirit of eXcellence. I just want to Thank God for his promise regarding Xcellence, Inc. This year, we finished strong with seven years of operation. From a dream in late 2007, to a living, thriving organization, that is making an impact in people lives all across the globe. I must be honest; there were times that I just wanted to throw in the towel. If there is anyone out there, that is making a continual sacrifice to commit to the works and assignments that God has given you, it constantly weighs heavy on your heart. Having a name like Xcellence, which is a direct reflection of everything he is to me, I cannot deliver anything less than that. Therefore, I pray that every experience you have with our organization, will live up to its name. 2016 is already well underway with solid plans that will surely shift us to the next level. A soft launch of our IXI Online Leadership has already been completed, which will provide a virtual platform for leaders anywhere to experience various online classes, created by real people, with real experiences, to get real results. The goal of this ministry is to strengthen the family unit by bringing families back to the table. While learning how to prepare healthy meals, and make healthier food choices, children and parents have an opportunity to connect with one another. In 2008, Mayor Jerry Gist appointed Merriweather to the role of Director of Neighborhood Services. The mission of the Neighborhood Service Department is to make government more accessible to the citizens we serve. This concept consisted of local businesses, churches, community leaders, and service organizations committing to a project throughout the City of Jackson. These projects included but were not limited too, (planting gardens, scraping and painting houses, landscaping, planting a tree and cleaning area parks). The City of Jackson just celebrated its 3rd annual “Month of Miracles” and recorded over 1000 volunteers working on over 60 projects in just 30 days. We witnessed gardens being planted, houses repaired, donation drives, shoe distributions, and many other volunteer activities. Businesses such as Home Depot, 84 Lumber, Sams Club, Perkins Restaurant, Old Country Store, Popeyes, Latham’s Meat Company and Backyard bar-be-cue donated materials and food to the volunteers. The media, WBBJ, Charter, Jackson Energy Authority, Lamar Advertising, News Talk 101.5, Forever Communications and The Jackson Sun, worked to cover stories of the miracle making during the month. All of this resulted in a successful April and an improved Jackson. The churches and faith based organizations formed as a single unit working together harmoniously and without prejudice. In October 2014, Merriweather in collaboration with area churches started “Praise in the Park”. An outdoor praise and worship experience for the whole family. Over 15 churches transformed the beautiful parks in the City of Jackson into a place of praise and worship. There were over 2500 in attendance for this event.

More than humor, those “C’s” are a reminder of the abilities and possibilities offered by our neigbors, and inspiration to appreciate what can happen when neighbors join together. Promise, Process, Manifestation… OK; so which came first, the chicken or the egg? This is a question that has been argued for centuries! My question to you is, if God promises you something; do you think it will manifest immediately? To answer your question probably not! Sometimes may be quicker than other, but many times we will seem like we’re waiting an eternity! Don’t get me wrong when God says HE’S going to do something you can definitely believe it!! God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will HE not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? (Numbers 23:19 NKJV) You can believe without a shadow of a doubt that when God makes you a promise there’s going to be a process you will have to go through before you see that promise manifested. Many times the while waiting on the promise we become weary because the wait seems so long. As people of God we need to remain encouraged while going through the process, even if we have to encourage ourselves! I know God has made promises to people before and they become so focused on the promise and get so discouraged because they have to go through the process that they forget about the one who made them the promise. You can’t desire the promise more than you desire Christ, because if you do you’ll never see the manifestation of the promise. God gave us His best when he gave us his Son Jesus that alone should tell us He would love to give what He’s promised us! Going through the process can be lonely and uncomfortable place, but I want to challenge you to go through the process with joy. Go through the process trusting and leaning on the word of Christ, because he really does love you! If Christ suffered what makes us think went won’t go through the fire? For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us. (Romans 8:18) If we go through the process and stay in right fellowship with Christ, praying and listening for His instructions, I assure you the manifestation of what He has promised you will come more quickly than you think! But today I want to encourage you and challenge you to just wait on God’s timing for the manifestation of what He’s promised you. And when you have those rough days while you’re going through the fire or pre-manifestation as I like to call it; lean in a little closer to Christ, lay at his feet, and desire HIM more than the Promise! Love y’all & remember Christ loves you like crazy!

Leadership, What does it look like to you? The first time I taught a leadership class, I asked, what does the term leadership mean to you? The responses that I received were very canning. They pointed to great leaders, such as Truman, Jefferson, Washington, and Mandela. Although these answers are correct, it amazed me that no one spoke of current community leaders. Thus, my next question was; what about the community leaders in your area? Silence, was what I heard. Why such a silence? Do we not recognize the great leaders that are among us? Or is it that we expect our great leaders to be ominous? Do we except our great leaders to be ominous without recognition? Behind every great movement there is a leader. Behind every great event, there is a leader. The question that I ask of you is this; does it make a difference if it is community based or national based? Could our great National leaders begin from nowhere and end up leading our nation? NO! All great leadership begins within our own community. All great leadership begins within a person who has a desire to expand upon their purpose! Leadership begins with a purpose to create change no matter where you are. Throughout my studies on leadership styles, I have found that great leaders will learn how to adapt to any given situation. My question concerns this; can this be a good or a bad trait? My opinion; after a lengthy research, I found that it is neither. Great leaders can be either dominate or adaptable. When leaders are faced with a negative situation, how will they respond? Will they relish in their success? Will a leader fold in the face of a negative challenge? Will they persevere and create new and enlightening situations for their followers to experience? To determine how great a leader can be, is to throw as many obstacles at them in the time of importance as possible. How will they react? How will they persevere? Will they fold? Will they carry on without notice? These types of situations occur every day, yet they go unnoticed by spectators. They go noticed as a judgement of dis-improvement for an event gone wrong. Yet, when we rejoice in the successes of our accomplishments, only then can we spiritually see how our leadership styles touch others. We observe community leadership when we hear the testimonies of others; when we feel the spirit of the children that gain an opportunity to learn from outsiders; when our fellow neighbors share with us their God given talents. Only then can we say that we truly adapt to a leadership style that is able to give our all, to any given community. Dr. Monica Dunnagan

Mission Possible! Global Outreach Activated 70% of Americans blame leadership crisis as a factor in the national economic decline. Isabel Williams, 2014 I will go a step further and state that not only are these statistics creating an economic decline, but poor leadership qualities or the lack thereof are also creating a decline in our communities. Strong leadership is first developed personally within, then transferred outwardly. My personal philosophy, “Leadership is Contagious! However, we must take accountability for the leaders that are struggling. How do we do it? Xcellence as an organization feels that if we can start a movement of targeting the three internal areas of leadership where deficits exist, we can make a global impact in the world. They are the development, empowerment, and promotion of leaders. Each of these components are critical to the success of both our local communities and economic deficits. We are committed to developing the entire family by meeting the needs of everyone in the household. Our infrastructure supports all individuals starting from the age of five and up. We train each person in what we feel are the foundational principles that are life changing for individuals: Spiritual, Business, Outreach, and Socially. Can you imagine every family, regardless of what its household looks like, becoming stronger leaders, first in their homes, then in their communities, and then ultimately making an impact in our national economy? We believe in our MISSION! We believe it is POSSIBLE to make a global impact by touching one community at a time. We will develop leaders through mentoring, coaching, and consulting. We will empower our leaders through workshops, conferences, and trainings. We will promote our leaders, through the continuation of providing this magazine platform to share the inspirational stories of everyday people who are leaders, and have made a conscious choice to walk in their leadership shoes to make this world a better place. Meet 2x Cancer Survivor

My Story, His Glory! I Have a Will to Live!

My name is Jackie Hines.

I’m 47 years old and I am a two time cancer survivor. In 2013, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer, which had metastasized. The first time I was diagnosed with breast cancer was in 2000. I was 32 years old, a single mom, with a 7-year-old son. I was doing a self-breast exam, when I felt a small lump about the size of a pea in my right breast. I had just recently moved to Nashville, and was unfamiliar with the area and didn’t know which doctor to choose, so I selected one out of the phone book. The next day I called and set up an appointment. The doctor that examined me said she didn’t feel anything and sent me on my way. I continued to examine myself on a regular basis and the lump kept getting bigger. I made several attempts to contact the doctor, in hopes of having a mammogram done, but each time was unsuccessful. Three months went by, and the lump grew into the size of a golf ball, that’s when I decided to go to another doctor. I prayed and asked God to help me find a good doctor, because I didn’t know where to turn. One day while I was at work, I was in the office filling out some paperwork, when one of the ladies in the office asked if I was ok. I told her about my situation and she gave me the name and number of her mother’s physician. Upon meeting the doctor, the first thing he asked me was, “If I believed in God,” I knew then that my prayer had been answered. After the doctor examined me, he gave me his diagnosis and referred me to a surgeon to perform a biopsy. When the results came back, it was cancer, I was devastated!!! I have a strong family history of breast cancer, and several of my family members had already had cancer, but I was not prepared, nor did I ever think it would happen to me. I knew God had answered my prayers many times before, but at that particular moment, God and prayer was the farthest thing from my mind. Who’s going to take care of my son and I don’t want to die, was all I could think of. Once I was calm enough to hear everything the doctor was telling me, I realized that it wasn’t as bad as I thought, and that God was still in control. In January 2001, I had a lumpectomy followed by chemo and radiation. For 12 years, the cancer was in remission, all gone and never to return, so I thought. In July 2013, I was having some pain in my left breast, but I didn’t feel any lumps, so I wasn’t worried, but by me having a history of breast cancer, I knew I had to have it checked out. I called my gynecologist office and tried to get an appointment to have a mammogram done and was told that I needed to see the doctor first.

When the doctor examined me she said she didn’t feel anything and she thought I may have some milk ducts stopped up. I was put on antibiotics for a week and was told to come back for a follow up visit. When I went back for my follow up appointment, I was told to continue taking the antibiotics. Two days into the second week, I felt two small lumps. I called and told the nurse about my findings and asked if I could have a mammogram. Once again, I was told that I needed to see the doctor first, but she didn’t have any appointments available, and she was booked for the next two weeks. It seemed as if history was repeating itself, but I wasn’t going to wait three months this time, therefore I immediately went to another doctor. I was sent to have a mammogram and an ultrasound, followed by a biopsy. When the results came back, it was cancer. There was that word again, but I still wasn’t worried, I had received good results the first time, so I thought ok, piece of cake. I decided to use the same surgeon, since I was familiar with his work, and was sent for additional testing. Upon farther testing, a larger tumor was found behind my breastbone, and I would find out later, that I had Stage 4 Breast Cancer which had metastasized. Worry and panic started to set in, because the doctors offered me no hope for survival, this time. I turned to God once again, and put my trust in him. God led me to a team of doctors that treated my mind, body, and soul, with more than just conventional medicines. You see if we put God first about all things, then all things are possible! I had chemo first, followed by surgery and radiation. So far, my treatment plans have been successful, but everyday is a day for me to be thankful and to continue to trust God’s ultimate plan. Cancer, does not have to be a death sentence, and you MUST have a will to live. DON’T EVER GIVE UP! If you feel you are not getting the answer you’re looking for from your doctor, don’t be afraid to go somewhere else. If you have a strong family history of cancer, get tested to see if you have the gene. I have the BRCA1 gene that attacks the breast, ovaries, and the pancreas, therefore my chances of getting cancer are much higher than the average individual. I’ll never give up, I’ll never quit fighting, I’ll never stop believing, and I refuse to roll over and die. I have a long road ahead of me. My journey has not ended, it’s just beginning. I have to make lifelong changes and adjustments, but I know that God will be with me every step of the way. Written by: Jackie Hines, I’m a Cancer Survivor!

Breast Cancer Awareness! Be in the Know! There are over 17 genes linked with breast cancer. The most common ones, BRCA1 and BRCA2, are associated with very high risks of breast and ovarian cancer. It’s important for women with a strong history of breast or ovarian cancer to get checked because people who carry these gene mutations start Mammograms/MRIs in their mid-20s, instead of in the 40s, like the general population. These cancer risks can be significantly reduced by certain medications or by surgical removal of the breasts/ovaries to keep from developing the cancer in the first place. If a person has a mutation in one of these genes then each of their family members have up to a 50% chance to have the same gene, and can get tested and checked regularly to significantly decrease the risk of breast and other cancers. We Didn’t Fall in Love,

We Grew in Love

A young couple indeed, however their love for each other started even further back. At an age when most girls and boys are merely developing their first crush, these two were destined to be together, as they have been friends almost their whole lives. Thaddeus remembered, “I was 12 and she was 13 years old, we were sitting in church, when I sent her a note and said, check yes if you like me and check no if you don’t. She marked yes and started cheesing.” Well, little did they know that day would be the beginning to a union established and created by God. Thaddeus Awan Flagg Palmer and Naytesha Shalay were married on June 6, 2015. He is he son of Michael and Willie Palmer, born in Jackson, Tennessee, but relocated to Tacoma WA with his parents shortly thereafter. Naytesha is the daughter of Dwayne and Nazyme Johnson and was born and raised in University Place, WA, where the couple resides today. “Although our journey has not been an easy one, we met in church, we are committed to God and the covenant he created for us. In a world where marriages end in divorce daily after a few short months after knowing each other, we feel that by putting God as the Priest of our home, our marriage is and will continue to be favored, said Thaddeus.” The young couple dated for 10 years and was blessed to share some of their most memorable childhood dates together, such as prom, and high school graduation, “but nothing was more beautiful than the date she became my wife, said Thaddeus.” Thaddeus is in preparation to join the United States Marine Corp. and Naytesha is currently employed with State Farm. They both attend True Vine Community Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop Leo C. Brown. They are busy making plans for the rest of their lives, but wanted to make sure that they held hands and gave themselves and God first priority in their life’s journey. We give God all the glory and all honor goes to him. Congratulations Mr. & Mrs. Thaddeus Awan Flagg Palmer.

A Mother & Daughter’s Port of Love Story A mother’s love is ever lasting and she often dreams of sharing everything she has with her child (ren). As true as that statement is, and mother’s all across the world can attest to it, this was also Helen Stewart’s thoughts for her daughter, LaTanya Stewart Florence, until she received the news, that they both would share a journey of breast cancer together. It was July 2013, when Helen was diagnosed with breast cancer. Within two short weeks, her life had changed and a mastectomy on her left breast was performed. Her treatments consisted of four rounds of chemotherapy every 3 weeks. As LaTanya braced herself to be her mother’s strength, unknowingly to her, they would become each other’s strength to endure the journey ahead. Just four short months after Helen’s July 2013 diagnosis, in November 2014, LaTanya was diagnosed. “I remember lotioning and felt a lump on my right breast. I was both nervous and scared. I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew that the last news I wanted to receive was a duplication of what my mom was experiencing,” said LaTanya. After a doctor’s appointment and several tests later, it was confirmed what LaTanya had been fearing, was true, and she was diagnosed with Stage 2 cancer. She recalled, “I remember a mixture of emotions ran through my mind. The mother’s love that always made me feel loved and safe, was the same love for her, that the last thing I wanted to share with her, was my newfound devastating news with her and my dad. They had enough they were dealing with! With God’s strength, love, support, and encouragement from my husband, family, and friends, I was able to share my news.”

28

LaTanya’s first treatment consisted of six rounds of chemo every 2 weeks, secondly surgery, and lastly radiation (6 ½ weeks of treatments daily). “I remember while taking chemo, I was very week, had no appetite, taste buds were gone and I could only eat if I taken my nausea meds. A typical day for me would consist of 4 hours of chemo, and when my red blood count was down, I had to have blood transfusions before I could take my chemo treatments, so I would be at the hospital many days approximately 8hrs. I had a lumpectomy on my right breast and two weeks later started my radiation treatments. Helen finished her chemotherapy on October 14, 2013, and had 38 rounds of radiation, which ended on December 23, 2013. Her post cancer treatments consist of a daily dose of anastrozole, a medication prescribed to cancer patients. LaTanya’s post cancer treatments consist of Tamoxifen and will continue for the next 10 years. Holidays are great, birthdays are awesome, but these two strong women now share a unique anniversary, a journey they will never forget, the day God granted them both survival and the gifts of life through their Ports of Love. Helen’s port was removed on July 31, 2014 and LaTanya’s port was removed on September 15, 2015.

Today, Helen is 66 years old. She has been married to Willie Stewart for 45 years and is a 1967 Carver High School (Brownsville, TN) graduate. LaTanya is 40 years old and married to her husband Cory Florence for 17 years. She’s a 1993 Haywood High School graduate and a 2014 graduate of St. Louis Community College.

Xcellence would like to thank Mrs. Helen Stewart and Mrs. LaTanya Stewart-Florence for sharing their inspirational journeys of faith and survival with us. We solicit your continuous prayers for them, and breast cancer survivors everywhere that has endured this journey. Share this article with your love ones and let’s continue to bring awareness and fight for a cure to end cancer once and for all.

My father was in the military as a young man, met my mother and brought her home from Germany to live in the United States. She became ill and wanted to return home to be with her family. The summer she returned home, my mother passed away, leaving my father with three small daughters, eight months, four years old and eight years old to raise by himself. His parents, my grandma and grandpa, provided a home for us in the small town of Raymond, Washington, a logging community on the coast of Washington State. I was eight years old and felt fine about that because I had always had a great time at their house. He worked in banking in Seattle and came to see us on the weekends. I graduated from high school and a one year certification in Office Occupations at Grays Harbor College. I went to work at a local title insurance company and then married my high school sweetheart in 1979. Two years after moving to Eastern Washington, our first daughter arrived and then within two years another daughter entered our lives. I had been working at a title insurance company, but then decided to stay home with our daughters full time when the second one was born. I started a licensed Child Care Provider business in my home so I could be with them full time. Life takes its various turns, and I found myself divorced and returning to college to become a teacher. I graduated from Central Washington University in 1999 with a degree in elementary education. I taught second grade for two years but found the money was not enough to raise two girls, even with child support. I returned to the business world and worked at title and escrow companies for several years. I met my husband, John, and after knowing each other for almost two years, we married in 2006. In 2010, after seven years commuting to downtown Seattle, a company merger left me with no flex time and an arrival time of 6:45 p.m. every night. I decided there had to be a better way and so I began to analyze my options. My career reinvention involved renewing my teaching credentials so I could substitute teach in my local school district. I also learned a great deal about publishing and started writing the Sammy the Centipede series which now has four books along with one already translated into Spanish. I am the National Literacy Ambassador for a non profit organization called Xcellence, Inc. and promote reading out loud to children across America. Since I have been coaching people all my life, I decided to become professionally certified and am excited to help women transform their lives into an experience that is full of joy, freedom and purpose.
