December 2018 Vol 2 Issue 5

EDITOR'S MESSAGE Hey Key Club! December is a fun time to spend the holidays with friends and family â€” but let's not forget about helping others this holiday season! This month our club is staying committed to our goals! We've been finding a lot of events and attending them, hosting fundraisers (like at the Divisional), and we're working on our scrapbook for LTC. Now that 2018 is over, it's important for all of us to look at what we've done and how we can improve. Let's make a commitment to do more for Key Club and help out our community even more in 2019! WHAT IS BEST BUDDIES INTERNATIONAL? Every service year, our club chooses an organization to support, and for the 2018-2019 service year, we chose Best Buddies International! This nonprofit's goal is to help out those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), from people with Down syndrome, autism, brain injuries, and other disabilities.

promotes both people with and without IDD to be advocates for those with IDD, helping reduce societal stigma and gain increased rights.

HOW WILL HSMSE KEY CLUB SUPPORT BEST BUDDIES? It's no secret that our club hosts many fundraisers! While some of them do go to costs of running the club, such as to pay for LTC and making the scrapbook for LTC, we will donate much of our proceeds to Best Buddies, supporting their cause financially.

HOW DOES BEST BUDDIES HELP OUT THOSE WITH IDD? This organization's 3 Program Pillars are One-to-One Friendships, Integrated Employment, and Leadership Development. Best Buddies creates mentorships and friendships for those with IDD, helping enjoy a better quality of life. In addition, Best Buddies also

POINTS

Points are assigned for your work in HSMSE Key Club. You can get points by doing things like going to meetings, divisionals, and events, helping out in committees, and more.

SYSTEM

Every 10 points you earn counts as one hour of volunteering.

Be sure to pay the $15 dues for the service year. If you don't, then we can't keep track of your points!

You take initiative.

BEING A PROJECT LEADER

What you do Project leaders are important to helping Key Club run behind the scenes! Each event can have a different project leader. They're responsible for taking attendance, taking pictures, writing both a scrapbook caption and a newsletter article, and filling out a google form found on our website.

Key Club's four core values are caring, leadership, inclusiveness, and character building. By being a project leader, you get to showcase all of these values. Anyone can be a project leader - even new members!

It helps the club. Through the work of project leaders, our club is able to record volunteer hours and work on our annual scrapbook and bimonthly newsletters.

It helps you. You gain leadership experience from this, and you earn two extra hours of community service!.

Seeds in the Middle Gift Wrapping 16

Seeds in the Middle is an organization that promotes better health and more extracurricular programs for children in Crown Heights.

Choosing the perfect present for a family member or a friend can be stressful, but our volunteers made sure that people could have a comfortable experience at Barnes and Noble in Park Slope. We were wrapping gifts, talking to customers, and giving out cards that would allow some of the proceeds to go to Seeds in the Middle. This event wasn't just helpful for customers and the organization due to free gift-wrapping and donations, but it also allowed volunteers to enhance their communication and artistic skills as most of the volunteers engaged in conversations with multiple customers, while others with exceptional artistic skills also got a chance to shine, as gift-wrappers. Even for the volunteers, it wasn't just about gaining volunteer hours! We had an enjoyable time engaging in fun activities like gift-wrapping and arts and crafts with children. Volunteers learned a lot not just about personal skills but they also helped spread happiness. Tahoor Arif Sophomore 17

december divisional

This divisional was held at Baruch. It was nice seeing familiar faces from different schools, and new people too. We talked about LTC and even saw the promo video made by the District Board. HSMSE was selling candy bags and candy canes as minifundraiser, and we made a good amount of money!

meals on heels Meals on Heels is a program by Fifth Ave Presbyterian Church on Saturdays to prepare and deliver food for the homebound elderly in Manhattan.

I've gone to Meals on Heels a lot of times since I was a freshman. Each time it's always a great experience! It's fun helping and getting more experience with preparing food, and interacting with the others there. And it's not just high school volunteers; there are a lot of elderly church members that also want to help out the community. It's also fun to deliver the food, as we get to walk around and personally hand the food to the elderly, who are always happy to see us! Angelo Lontok 19 Editor

K R A P Y M S ' IT on Park s c i r E f i @ Le

During It's My Park @ Leif Ericson Park, the hardworking people in the community joined by HSMSE’s Key Club cleaned the park and planed seeds for the spring. Upon arriving, we found a large group of people gathered all here to clean the neighborhood park. Different roles were assigned in order to increase productivity. We chose to dig holes

20

to plant seeds along the side to further beautify the park. We each grabbed a shovel and dug for seeds, presumed to be flower seeds. After planting approximately a thousand flower seeds, we moved on to raking leaves. While raking leaves, volunteers thought of extremely creative ways to effectively clean the leaves. Some used plastic bags to

piles and dispose of them. Others used rakes as chopsticks and impressively got the job done. The younger children used small, tiny shovels and patted the dirt down after filling the holes. Although not the most helpful, these children showed how much

they treasured the park. It was extremely rewarding to see and to work alongside people who cherish their neighborhood. Cleaning the park was laboring work, but in the moment, we were focused and having fun enjoying the rare, sunny New York weather tidying Leif Ericson Park. Brianna Nee Freshman

With the help of caring members of the community, young and old, the event ended in hundreds of bags of leaves and a thousand flower seeds planted!
