Nick is a huge fan of boilie fishing, and rarely uses anything but, proving that you don’t need to overcomplicate your approach to catch big carp.

My biggest common from a recent trip to French venue Le Queroy, at 44lb 12oz.

First Trip to France If you’re planning a trip to France this year, it’s well worth checking out how Nick Burrage attacked a water he’d never been to before. Le Queroy threw up some of its beasts for him too.

Planning The Trip So, you’ve had some good information about a lake that suits your angling ability. A useful start is information from friends who have fished the water, and also the Internet is full of helpful information. With the lake booked, a trip to France is happening, but when fishing in France, Germany,

trip: passport, insurance for cover on European roads (Green Card), accident cover, vehicle log book and driving licence. The most important thing is your passport, but the other items are just as important if you’re stopped by the French police; it could cost you an on-the-spot fine if you’re pulled over on the French motorways. Other items which are needed are two yellow jackets, a safety triangle, and a set of spare bulbs, not forgetting the headlight deflectors, which can be found at the services around the Channel crossing ports on each side of the Channel. They also sell breathalyser kits, which are no longer the law in France, but well worth having just in case. Booking the train or ferry is made LEFT The ferry may be a little cheaper,

but it’s the train for me these days.

bait soak will prolong the bait for a long time, as well as giving it an extra boost of attraction.

Bait Bait-wise, everybody has their own opinion on what’s good to use, but no bait is good if it’s not kept properly for the time you’re on the bank. An easy option is shelf life baits, but personally I like to use freezer baits. A mix of the two gives you a backup for later in the week/2-week long session, and some work great together, such as Trigga freezer bait and Trigga shelf life baits. Freezer bait-wise, if the lake doesn’t have an on-site freezer, air-drying the baits while there is a good option, but drying out 15-20 kilos is a little hard to do. I would air-dry at least half the amount at home weeks before I go, and refreeze in marked bags ready for the trip. As a rule, bait sitting on the bank for 4 days is the limit, but air-dried baits can be glugged with a salmon oil or a bait soak to keep them longer than most trips are going to last. Bait can be rehydrated in hemp water, or even just lake water with

The Great Crafty Carper Debate.

Q

With thoughts of spring in your mind, what’s the first thing you look at doing in preparation for your spring carp angling?

This month’s experts are: Iain Macmillan, or Ting Tong, as he is also known, is a quality angler who loves nothing more than spending time in a clean bivvy due to his OCD for cleanliness. Rumour has it he carries around a hand-held vacuum cleaner to use in the bivvy. Ian Chillcott is a firstclass big-fish angler and has amassed a huge list of lumps along the way. He loves nothing more than fishing boilies all year round and can usually be found in search of good-looking old English carp. Ian Lewis is a decorator by trade and took up carp angling in his teens, when he honed his skills on the Yateley complex. He is very much a thinking angler who always gives 100 per cent when it comes to effort. You can find him on YouTube where he does a monthly blog. Julian Cundiff needs no introduction, and when it comes to having the motivation and attitude to succeed, Jules is the man. No matter how big or small, he just loves catching carp at any opportunity. Whether doing overnighters between work or an hour here and there, the man doesn’t sleep!

Julian Cundiff says:

Adam Garland works long hours and has a young family, so fishing time is limited to overnighters and short day sessions. He catches consistently, often in tricky conditions, and places great importance on fish location; he also loves to fish small spots accurately.

This year Carpin’ On is in its 13th year; it’s gained a great reputation along the way because it is the show that has always been known as the one organised for carp anglers, by carp anglers. You’ll see from the testimonials just how good a show Carpin’ On really is. Founded in 2001 by Tim Paisley, Chris Ball and Kevin Clifford, the show offers anglers a great day out, as well as the chance to rub shoulders with your favourite

angling personalities. Not only can you pick up a bargain, you can also learn a thing or two, while having a social with your angling mates. There will be plenty to keep you entertained throughout your time at the show, whether that’s wandering around to find out what’s new within the world of carp angling, watching and listening to some top-quality entertainment, or taking a seat in front of the main stage while a host of top names make an appearance.

Saturday 15th March The Interactive Carp Clinic

Why not come along to the Interactive Carp Clinic stand and get involved in some bait-making or rig-tying, whilst having a nosy at what the Crafty Carper team is up to. On hand to answer your carping questions and tie up his favourite rigs will be none other than Julian Cundiff. Jules has a wealth of carping experience, and there’s not much he doesn’t know about or can’t assist with. If you just want to drop by for a chat, that’s fine too. Jules will also be signing copies of his book, Short Session Success, so this is your chance to pick one up. Assisting Jules will be the number one carp-rig guru on the planet, Mike Kavanagh. If you have read Carpworld magazine at some point in the last 20 years, there’s a very good chance you’ll have seen Mike’s regular Rig World column. He is a mine of information when it comes to anything riggy, and his rig demos need to be seen to be believed. We guarantee that Mike will have a solution to any rig-related problem you might have, and he is only too glad to lend a hand and have a chat. Carpworld’s monthly Bait World’

columnist, Joe Turnbull, will be available for all your baiting questions. Joe is very hands-on with his bait preparation, and guarantees to concoct a feast of carpy goodness over the course of the weekend. He’ll point you in the right direction when it comes to stick or spod mixes, alternative hookbaits, or even some weird and wonderful bait-rolling tips. If carp food is your thing and you want to pick the brains of someone who is really in the know, then Joe is most certainly your man. The Richworth boys will also be in attendance on the stand all weekend, making up all manner of hookbaits that they’ll be giving away for free. Last year, over 500 happy punters left with a pot of Crafty Carper/Richworth popups, and we’re aiming to give away even more at this year’s show. We’ll be welcoming some special guests, including the likes of Ian Russell, to the Carp Clinic over the course of the weekend. They will cover everything from Zig and surface fishing, smashing up day tickets, to baiting tactics, favourite rigs, and much more, see you there!
