have just returned from my first visit to the mighty Burghfield Lake near Reading, but before I write about this incredibly daunting inland sea, I’ll bring you up to speed with what I’ve been up to since my last diary piece. If you remember, I managed to save the blank with an upper-double common at the end of my last trip to Bundy’s after switching from a foam hookbait to a pink Milky Toffee pop-up soaked in Goo. During my time away from the lake I was thinking about

BELOW My final fish from Bundy’s. I’d changed the bait just before I caught this so was now concerned I may have been missing out.

all the ‘what ifs’. Had the hookbait change made all the difference? Was it going to turn it on its head on the next trip? Should I have been using them all winter? What might I have caught? Well there was only one way to find out, and that was to get back down there and get it on all three rods. I arrived for my final trip of the season and slotted straight back into the Car Park Swim. I’d spotted a few showing in the middle area, but also a few panning left,

and this swim had the best scope to cover that area. All three were rigged up on the Adjustable Zigs with the bright pink hookbaits and set 10ft down, the depth at which the last bite had come. It’s textbook that my first bite on the Zig in January had come 15ft down, and then, week by week, the bite depth was getting less. This was clearly in my mind, especially because of the sunny weather we were forecast and the fact that Jim Wilson had had success in March the previous year between 10 and 6ft down. ZIG FISHING A LEAP OF FAITH

Fishing midwater for carp is as old as the hills, yet it has taken many anglers a long time to come to terms with it as a viable bigfish tactic. Rich Ballard reveals how changing the way he thought about Zigging changed his fishing and his fortunes for ever.

LEFT The Birthmark, ’ve dabbled with Zigs in the 38lb 4oz. past, mainly on day ticket waters RIGHT From up a tree, I could see the fish in when I’ve seen fish in the upper the upper layers. layers. Not being very good at surface fishing, I’ve made half-hearted attempts at fishing for them this way, using Hair-rigged pop-up boilies as bait, with limited success. It was during the development, by Kevin Nash, of the Zig Bug range that I ended up having a more serious go at it. It is a whole new dimension to carp angling and it does take some getting your head round the concept that carp will take a bait due to being inquisitive – I was of the mindset that it needed to be food on the hook. I was fishing boilies on the bottom, so why wouldn’t “A l t h o u g h y o u I fish a pop-up on a Zig will get bites on Rig? I was trying to tempt m o re h e a v i l y - s t o cke d them with flavours and venues , it is actually smells, when the reality c l e a r, w e e d y w a t e r s is that the carp will with a large amount of take stuff in midwater natural food for the out of curiosity, and in car p w hich fishing fact they may already be with Zigs can feeding there on natural food, so you just need to really unlock” try to replicate that somehow. Although you will get bites on more heavily-stocked venues, it is actually clear, weedy waters with a large amount boggling how this leap of faith can turn of natural food for the carp which fishing what is a very difficult venue into what with Zigs can really unlock. These lakes seems like a very easy venue because they can often be gruelling places to fish, are there, and you are presenting a bait where the carp don’t rely on boilies as in the right area. As they are searching, a food source, instead growing big by or just swimming, in midwater and in eating naturals. They can live in and front of them is an object that could around a weedbed for months on end, be food, they will take it, sometimes eating snails, larvae, daphnia and other as part of what they are feeding on, natural food sources. This, in turn, but also sometimes out of curiosity. makes them very difficult to catch using I was very fortunate to be allowed to conventional boilie tactics. Even more fish Kevin Nash’s Church Lake during traditional baits, such as tiger nuts and the spring of 2012. I was helping out sweetcorn, can sometimes fail to tempt with the compiling of his book, working them. Luckily, being you have to go for them. It is mindin that lake. so close to the office, I was also able to pop down at lunchtimes to have a quick look round, climb a few trees, and stay in touch with what was going on and where the carp were holding up. It was early March – still very cold – and although there were other anglers fishing the lake, action was very slow. They were all fishing bottom baits and struggling. Jerry Hammond was back down, and managed to sneak the first one out on a Zig, as he had done the previous season. I could feel a plan of attack forming. There is

weed in the lake 365 days a year, and presentation can be difficult, especially during the summer, but even at this time it was making life difficult. Although the water was still cold, there was fresh growth already and I was banking on all the larvae and hatches beginning to stir the carp’s interest. Following Alan Blair, Jerry Hammond, and a couple of others enjoying success using trout flies and home-made imitations – including Jerry banking a 50lb+ common – over the course of the previous year, we had been trying various patterns on various hooks, coming up with the initial Zig Bug range, and this is what I was going to use. This development went down two routes. First, the attractor Beetle Range, small bugs with a flash of colour, designed to grab the attention of the carp and perfectly suited to higherstocked venues, and second, the Naturals Range, based around real invertebrates that the carp might encounter midwater. My favourite of these was definitely The Louse. Having watched underwater footage of conventional Zigs with a bait Hair-rigged, the thing that stood out the most was the hook. With the hook hidden by the legs, May 2014 C a r pwor l d 39

lads, the more info I began to uncover. At the right time of the year there were said to be between eight and ten 30s, including an absolutely stunning linear weighing in the region of 37lb. The number three fish was a mirror named Cluster weighing in the 33lb bracket, closely followed by one of the oldest fish in the lake, known as Casper, the ghost carp weighing around 32lb. Casper had weighed as much as 37lb+ in the past, but it’s fair to say that its best days were behind it because it was approaching 30 years of age. I remember in the early years of Carp-Talk seeing Casper within its pages when it was a baby, watching it gently pile on the weight. Of course, it would be nice to catch it because of its history, as indeed it would any of the other top four fish, which were all lovely-looking scaly mirrors. I must admit I was a little surprised to hear how many good fish there were in Tyram. Before joining I only ever heard about three or four of the main ones, so to hear of there being at least twice as many 30s was very pleasing, especially for somewhere in Yorkshire. Other good fish over that weight included Butthead, Arthur, Big Footballer, and a couple of others, the names of which I forget. Straight away a couple of areas took my fancy, especially Peg 19, which had the most water and options out in front. This was the swim from where Tim and I had won our BCAC eliminator and therefore was somewhere I had a little bit of info about. It was situated right in the middle of the two islands with lots of ups and downs in front. I remember catching fish from the smaller of the two

islands to the right, and Tim catching his fish from open water. I also knew from talking to the owner, Phil Johnson, that on current form it was the swim to be in, with a lot of good winter fish coming from there. I was due to start my fishing a few days before the Carpin’ On show in Essex and it was certainly the swim that took my fancy the most. The other one that looked a good bet was out on a point called Peg 8. The very first time I fished the lake in 1994 I remember a lad catching some good fish from there, casting out into open-water weedbeds on a plateau, as well as tight to the back of the larger island. To be fair, there were lots of other good-looking swims nearby, but these two were the ones that stood out the most and where I expected to be concentrating my fishing to begin with. Time fo r a Visit

The weather was lovely during the first two weeks of March. It was very spring-like and after beginning the month on Emmotland’s Pond 3 with very little to show for it, I decided it was time to get myself on Tyram. Typically, the first day I went down to fish, everything had changed and it was like winter had finally taken its grasp on the region. There was a thick band of fog covering the lake as I drove through the gates and, unsurprisingly, there was no one else fishing. It felt like a ghost town if I’m honest, and having limited info to go on, I decided to jump into Peg 19 to get things under way. The light was fading as I set up the Titan and the rest of the camp. Go on Holiday-

Win £10,000! Welcome to Fishabil If you are planning a carp-angling holiday you could do a lot worse than visit Fishabil. But what makes this holiday so special is that you could come home £10,000 better off! In every country there are some venues that have an historical importance. For instance, in the UK we’ve got the likes of Savay and Horton in the south, or perhaps, Redesmere in the north. In France, it’s a little bit different. We dare say that in the past there were certainly lakes containing carp that were fished for or used as a food supply, but as an industry, the carp-angling scene really

took off back in the early-’90s with the advent of anglers taking holiday trips in search of good carp angling. It was back in this era that lakes such as Fishabil and Les Quis were born – to service a whole new industry of travelling carp anglers. There’s a whole feature on Fishabil in this month’s International Carper, and regular readers will no doubt know that Angling Publications/Carpworld used to run organised trips to Fishabil in the mid- to late-’90s, right at the birth of the boom in holiday carping. It is with this history in mind that Carpworld has decided to revisit Fishabil for the inaugural Carpworld International Championship. The idea is to give carp anglers of all levels the chance to fish

competitively against their peers in a friendly, almost holiday, atmosphere, but with the chance to win one of the biggest prizes in competition angling – £10,000! It is intended that the event will be a cross between a holiday and a competition, and although we’re expecting there to be a strong, but friendly, competitive edge to the fishing, the idea is also for anglers to have a good time on a lake where the fishing cannot be classed as difficult, in the company of like-minded anglers. The tournament will be a 5-day endurance event, running from 13th19th October, and there will be a maximum of 34 pairs of anglers. This number of anglers on Fishabil’s 85 acres will ensure that everyone has a large area to fish, and with around 65 tonnes of fish swimming around, it’s almost a certainty that everyone will catch. Fishabil cannot be classed as difficult, and each and every swim has a chance of providing the winning catch. Just to give you an example, in the Masters event last year, 4,294lb of carp were landed and a massive 87% of anglers caught. The winners hauled in over 830lb of carp, and even

the second- and third-placed teams banked 704 and 642lb respectively, so you can see that this is an event where big catches can be expected – and from virtually every swim. If you think you can’t afford to enter a competition of this calibre, think again. At a cost of £1,100 per pair, you’ll get access to a world-class venue with full restaurant and bar facilities, an on-site hotel/apartment complex and, of course, the usual showers, toilets and facilities – a price not much more than some drive-and-survive holiday venues. There will also be a gala dinner at the end of the event, and food, drink and bait will be available during the competition. As well as the fantastic first prize of £10,000, there will also be several other big-money prizes, and it is possible that as time progresses, we’ll be adding to the prize list. Back to the fishing. Fishabil is literally stuffed with carp to over 60lb and they do like a good feed! There are no snags, no weed, and standard UK-style tactics and tackle will be perfectly adequate. All the banks around the lake are easy to access and there will be regular updates on the action from the team of officials. Bait will be available to purchase and you’ll have the chance to fish alongside some of the world’s best carp anglers in a friendly atmosphere. It’s going to be a cracker of a competition and places are limited, so we’d advise you to start off by checking out the details on the Carpworld website at carpworldmagazine.com where there is also a downloadable entry form and a full set of rules, and then start planning your tactics and getting all your gear ready. Because Fishabil is a holiday venue, all the usual facilities will be available, so living on the bank should not be a major concern, and don’t forget, after the final whistle there will be a free gala dinner for everyone. If you really do want to make it a family affair, guests can be accommodated in the hotel/apartments. It’s up to you because this is not just a competition – it’s a holiday!

will happily fish through the harshest of conditions year after year, but sometimes the weather makes it almost impossible to get out and fish, and this winter is one of those times. I am located in Central Pennsylvania, on the East Coast of the Unites States of America, and we are in the middle of a very unforgiving winter. I don’t mean extreme by UK standards, where schools close if there is a rumour of snow falling (as a former PE teacher from Wolverhampton I always welcomed snow days), I am talking about feet of snow, falling daily between December and March, accompanied by some meteorological phenomenon known as a ‘polar vortex’. Tomorrow’s forecast is a high of 5° and low of -6°F (that’s a high of -15° and a low of -21° in English money). As a result, all lakes, and most rivers, are frozen solid.

Th e Spr in g Creek

I have still been managing to get out fishing sporadically this winter, but obviously I am limited in where I can

go. Thankfully, one of my local spots on a little water I know, Spring Creek, is still ice-free, and having become a little obsessed with this area, it is nice to be able to get down and attempt to catch one of my target fish. There is actually one advantage of the snow in that it reduces the activity of deer ticks, which were causing me no end of problems through the autumn months. These little critters can transmit nasty diseases, such as Lyme disease, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which cause symptoms such as fever, nausea, fatigue and, in severe cases, death. Both my dogs and I were getting bitten by ticks from the creek in the Fall, meaning I had to postpone visiting the swim until the weather cooled off a bit. There is nothing quite like waking up at 2.00 a.m. with one biting you on the arm. Thank God the thing did not venture further south. My wife was not too impressed with my entomological behaviour either. I moved to Central Pennsylvania 18 months ago and immediately came across problems when attempting to fish locally because many waters had been ruined by bow hunters shooting carp and trout from stocked areas which only allow fishing for those specific species with fly fishing tackle. The first two carp I caught locally were stunning wild (probably uncaught) commons, landed within an hour of locating them. The half a mile stretch contained around 20 fish up to lowdoubles, and although I am primarily a big-fish hunter, it was nice to be able to fish a few midweek hours on the way home from work. However, I soon got informed of the trout-only May 20 14 C a r pwor l d 163
