The

Narrowboat Experience Why canal boat holidays are so great for families… It’s a real adventure with everyone heading off together, looking out for interesting things to see and do along the way; We provide you with buoyancy aids and boat steering tuition so everyone can enjoy learning together to master navigation skills and work the locks; Enjoy learning the boating lingo together - ‘windlass’, ‘winding hole’ and ‘tiller’, ‘bow’, ‘stern’, ‘port’ and ‘starboard’, spot wildlife, including the flashing blue of the kingfisher and ‘plop’ of the water vole; Dust-off long neglected cards and board games for cosy onboard evening entertainment (though our boats all have TVs and DVD-players too!); Explore mile-upon-mile of traffic-free towpaths by foot or by bike (up to two bikes can be stored on the roof of the boat); Breathe in plenty of fresh air to aid a peaceful night’s sleep.

The greener way

Travelling at less than four miles an hour, a narrowboat holiday offers the fastest way to slow down and the chance to sight-see at a relaxed pace. As soon as you are underway, stress levels are immediately reduced and a steadier pace of life takes over.

Pubs galore!

From fields and wildlife to fascinating urban landscapes with top attractions, you’ll see things differently from a canal boat. But it’s also an adventure, as you set off together – with family or friends - to explore the waterway ahead. Your canal boat becomes your floating hotel room, giving you the chance to stay where you choose, from vibrant city centres to remote rural backwaters. Most mooring sites are free, so you stay somewhere different every night! You can moor up in the centre of top destinations such as Bath, Birmingham, Oxford, Stratford-Upon-Avon and Chester; visit significant historic sites including the soaring majesty of the World Heritage Pontcysyllte Aqueduct; or enjoy world class attractions - Alton Towers, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and the Thermae Spa in Bath.

A boating holiday is estimated to be 20 times better for the planet than spending two hours flying to a holiday overseas and as soon as you swap your car for a boat, you’ll be using a third of the fuel.

With hundreds of waterside pubs, a watering hole is never far away, many of them historic rural locals.

Watch out for wildlife

Waterways provide homes for large numbers of birds, plants and animals, including many protected species - the water vole, otter and kingfisher, so there’s always something special to look out for.

Enjoy the comforts of home

Today’s canal boats are fully equipped with all the essential mod cons: fully equipped kitchens; central heating; hot water; TV/DVD; showers and flushing toilets.

You can bring your pet with you

Up to two pets are welcome on all our boats, so they don’t have to miss out on the family holiday! Plus the first pet goes free.

Fair fuel costs!

All our boats start with a full tank of fuel - plenty to cover a steady two week cruise. You pay a fuel deposit when you book your holiday – this is £90 per week or £50 per short break. When you bring the boat back to us the balance of the deposit is refundable after deducting the fuel used. If you have used fuel in excess of the deposit, you will be asked to pay the difference.

Page 5

It’s easy for first-timers to learn to operate our boats. And with our nationally accredited handover and tuition, we’ll make sure you’re comfortable and in control before you set off. See page 14 for details.

Popular

F

rom floating across the awesome Pontcysyllte Aqueduct to bobbing through Bath, your canal boat holiday can take you to some of Britain’s most beautiful cities and incredible World Heritage sites. Each of our bases offers a wide variety of destinations but we’ve listed nine of our most popular for inspiration. See pages 36-37 for recommended longer circuits and rings.

The ‘dreaming spires’ of Oxford The beautiful city of Oxford is just a three-hour (four lock) cruise away from our Oxford base at Eynsham on the River Thames. Enjoy a short break in Oxford, using your canal boat as a base to explore all the City has to offer. Climb the 14th century Carfax Tower to take in a view of Oxford’s ‘dreaming spires’, see the witch in a bottle at the Pitt Rivers Museum, visit the remains of the Dodo at the University Museum of Natural History.

Historic Warwick Our base at Stockton on the Grand Union Canal in Warwickshire offers a seven-hour (12 lock) journey to the lovely city of Warwick and the chance to visit its famous castle - said to host ‘Britain’s greatest mediaeval experience’.With a history dating back over a thousand years and rolling landscaped gardens to explore Warwick Castle is a fascinating place to visit.

Mediaeval Chester Our base at Bunbury on the Shropshire Union Canal in Cheshire is just seven hours (and nine locks) away from the historic City of Chester, making it a popular short break destination. Famous for its Mediaeval architecture and city walls, Chester also offers a vibrant market hall, an award winning zoo, busy racecourse, trendy bars, shopping malls and a huge variety of restaurants.

The bright lights of Birmingham Central moorings are available in Gas Street Basin, right next to Brindley Place, giving you easy access to top attractions, including The Mailbox and Bullring shopping centres, the Sea Life Centre, Science Museum, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, Jewelery Quarter, Ikon Gallery and the famous “Balti Triangle”! And if you’re feeling like a treat on the way home, you could stop off at the delicious canal side Cadbury World!

Popular Destinations

Foxton Locks and the Leicestershire countryside Our base at North Kilworth on the rural lock-free summit of the Leicester Line of the Grand Union Canal offers the chance to explore mile upon mile of unspoilt Leicestershire countryside.

World Heritage City of Bath Bath makes a fantastic short break destination from our Bradford on Avon, City of Bath and Monkton Combe bases. The centre of this beautiful Georgian city, famous for its natural hot springs and Thermae Spa, stunning architecture, great shopping, bustling waterfront restaurants and Jane Austin Museum, is an eight-hour (seven lock) journey from the picturesque Cotswold town of Bradford on Avon.

Head for a theme park! Alton Towers and Drayton Manor Park are close to canals accessible from our Great Haywood base, giving you the chance to swap the tranquillity of the canals for the thrills of a theme park for the day. Froghall on the Caldon Canal is just 20 hours (18 locks) from Great Haywood making it easily accessible on a short break.

Visit Shakespeare’s Stratford

Our base at Wootton Wawen is a six-hour (17 lock) journey along the pretty Stratford Canal from Stratford upon Avon. Here you can moor on the River Avon close to the famous Swan Theatre with easy access to the town’s museums, shops, markets and restaurants.

The awesome World Heritage Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which carries the Llangollen Canal 38 metres (126ft) high above the River Dee, is right next to our base at Trevor in North Wales. You may be travelling at just four miles an hour, but with not even a hand rail on the south side of the aqueduct to obscure your views of the breathtaking Dee Valley below, you will literally feel like you are floating above the earth!

Holiday Diary

Writer and journalist Lucy Cavendish writes a colu mn ‘Country Mother of Four’ for the Telegraph’s Stella Magazine. She also writes for the Times, the Guardian, the Daily Mail and many women’s magazines. Her most recent novel ‘Jack and Jill’, about a boy who doesn’t speak, has been much acclaimed. We turned up at the Anglo Welsh base on the Stratford Canal laden with everything we think we need for a week away. There are six of us – two adults and four children aged from six to 16 – and a dog called Peaches. It is a perfect day. The sun is shining. The narrowboats are gently bobbing in the breeze, the sunshine making dappled reflections on their sides. It looks just as the brochure shows it. What could, after all, be more perfect, more relaxing than a week spent lazily meandering down the Stratford Canal and River Avon? Friends had baulked when I told them we were spending a week on a boat. You’ll drive each other mad’, they said, ‘all six of you in an enclosed space.’ Others were more concerned about Health and Safety, constantly banging on about what would happen if the children fell in. But their fears fell on deaf ears. I grew up next to the River Thames and spent my entire childhood either swimming in it or paddling down it. My father also had a mad boating obsession which meant that we spent virtually all our childhood on narrowboats floating down the Canal du Midi. We spent days afloat sunbathing, watching ducks, reading books and playing cards. This is exactly what I wanted from our holiday. In this day and age, when all my children seem to be permanently glued to screens of one form or another, I couldn’t think of anything more novel. We would all be together, no laptop or computer or X-Box. We would have fun, play some bonding games, visit new places and make bar-b-cues every night.

Day 1 The first thing we did was to be shown all the bits and pieces to the boat. It all sounded incredibly complicated but the nice man from Anglo Welsh assured me it wasn’t. The most important bits seemed to revolve around putting the boat to bed at night and getting it ready the next morning. We also had to make sure we refilled with water on a daily basis. ‘Apart from that, you’re all set,’ said the man. He gave us a thorough driving lesson up the very narrow Stratford Canal and then hopped off as we passed the base. We waved goodbye to him, now utterly on our own and slightly terrified (well, maybe that was just me). I just couldn’t see how we were going to negotiate anything in this hugely long 65ft green torpedo. But my partner was remarkably laid back about everything. As we approached a long narrow aqueduct, he carefully steered the boat with some aplomb. I began to calm down. Maybe we’d be fine. That first night we managed a couple of locks and then moored up. My partner got the bar-be-cue out.

Holiday Diary

Day 2 Today we decided to brave the long line of locks and head into Stratford Upon Avon. There’s lots of winding involved and it gets quite labour-intensive after the tenth one. But, eventually, we popped out in to the Stratford Bowl and moored up. This is what is incredible about boating. You see towns from an entirely different perspective. The children were delighted to be in Stratford. They could barely believe how easy it was to moor up and then just wander around the town and do some sightseeing. Interestingly enough though, after a few hours, they wanted to get back on the boat!

Day 3 This was one of my favourite days. We spent the morning going down the River Avon which is far wider than the canal. It was quiet and peaceful. The children and I spent a lot of our time sitting at the front of the boat watching wildlife. My daughter, aged six, loved drawing all the birds she saw. We moored up for lunch on the river bank. My daughter got the nets from the boat and her minnowing jar and the children spent a happy hour or so catching small fish.

We got back on the boat feeling very mellow. It had been a great few hours and we hadn’t seen a single other soul. We motored onwards and spent the night at Bidford, a very pretty town with a great play park. The children went on the swings and roundabouts and then came back and played rounders on the bank. Just as we were settling down for the evening, we heard the distant rumble of thunder. The next thing we knew, a storm was raging above us. It was very thrilling to be in a boat, the rain pounding, lightning flashing around us. The children loved it.

Day 4 This was our last day before we had to turn around and go back again. We spent the day going through Evesham where we stopped for an ice cream and then ending up at Pershore for the night. We wandered in to town to find we’d stumbled in to the middle of the Plum Festival. Everything was about plums from the jam to the relish for the specialist Pershore sausages. We bought some and bar-be-cued them for our dinner. We also had fresh locally-grown plums for our pudding.

Page 9

The next day…we turned around and wended our way back to Wootton Wawen. By the time we got back to the Anglo Welsh base everyone was feeling rather sad. Our week without screen – bar the onboard TV – had been a resounding success. My partner had mastered the controls of the boat and was driving like a pro. My children loved watching the world go by. My eldest son became a dab hand at doing the locks. And as for me? It was the same as when I was a child...only better!

Prepare the

trip

e want your boat to be in tip top condition when you collect it, so it will be ready from 3pm in the afternoon on your holiday start date.

Before you set off, one of our instructors will take you through everything you need to know for your canal boat holiday - how to start the engine; fill up with water; steering; slow down; moor up; and work the locks. You will also be taken through the basics of canal etiquette – from which side to drive on (the middle), how to steer and work the locks to canal etiquette and the best places to moor-up and turn. There is a manual on board every boat if you need to check on anything and our engineering teams are always on hand – 24 hours a day - to help over the phone or come out to you if you need them. With your tuition complete, you will be ready to enjoy the perfect holiday afloat. We know you will find it both relaxing and revitalizing, with something new to see every minute and the chance to work as a team to work the locks, steer the boat and plan your next stop. It is a fun, exciting experience for all the family to enjoy.

for

Here are some useful points to bear in mind to help you prepare for your trip:

Going through locks Each lock takes about 20 minutes to go through. Some locks you operate yourself and others are operated by lock-keepers. There is no mystery to using locks – just a series of step-by-step tasks. A lock is simply a chamber with gates at either end. By emptying or filling that chamber with water, your boat can move up or down onto a new section of the waterway.

Mooring up Your boat will not be permitted to cruise at night so make sure you are moored by nightfall. Whilst you can choose where you stop for the night, use sign-posted visitor moorings wherever possible, and always moor to the towpath if you can. If you’d like to find out more about boat handling ahead of your holiday, you can download a free copy of the Canal & River Trust’s boater’s handbook from www.canalrivertrust.org.uk.

f you’re the kind of person who likes lots of choices, then this is the base for you. We’re situated on the crossroads (or should that be cross canals?) of the Staffordshire and Worcester and Trent and Mersey, so your first decision will be which way to go – and that depends on the cruising criteria. Head north on the Trent and Mersey and you’ll join the Caldon Canal, taking you to Froghall. Why is Froghall important? Well, Alton Towers theme park is only a short bus ride away, so if you’re in the mood for a thrilling, mind- boggling, gravity-defying experience, remember to book your tickets in advance. Then you can come back to your boat to get your head (and body) back into ‘slow, relaxing, chilling out mode.’

Museum of Science & Industry

The beautiful Tixall Wide is just 15 minutes cruise from the base where the canal opens up to the size of a lake. It was commissioned by the landowner in the early 1770’s who wanted to enjoy a better view from his estate. We say Thank You to him as we now have a beautiful expanse of water where wildlife flourishes. Further along the Staffordshire and Worcester canal you’ll come across Victorian Wightwick Manor complete with William Morris interiors and colourful garden - and Kinver Edge with its unique rock-carved houses. Both just a short walk from the canal and well worth a visit.

e have a large fleet of boats cruising from Bunbury, our base set within the heart of rural Cheshire, next to the well-known Bunbury Staircase Lock’.

There’s a choice of short and long breaks, which will take in the glorious English countryside through Cheshire and Shropshire or even the delights of North Wales. Cruising north you’ll be heading for Chester – old enough to make your spine tingle, yet young enough in spirit to be effortlessly fashionable. Small enough to explore easily on foot, but big enough to be wonderfully cosmopolitan. They are big on river culture here, so you’ll find you’ll be catered for impeccably with a host of high quality bars and restaurants.

11 13

CHORLEY CHO T LETO TAR T N TO

And of course, you can always take your little monkeys to wonderful Chester Zoo! Carry on cruising further north again and you’ll reach Ellesmere Port, where the history of the canals began. Or take the Shropshire Union Canal (the ‘Shroppie’) south with not a city in sight; bear off down the Middlewich Branch and cruise to the world famous Anderton Boat Lift. It’s the world’s first and the UK’s only working boat lift. Time travel through the unique structure on board the Edwin Clark trip boat, journeying between the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey Canal high above. With an additional seven miles of The Montgomery Canal also recently restored, a cruise along ‘The Monty’ is a must for conservation and wildlife enthusiasts. With its ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’ and “Special Area of Conservation in Wales”awards, this canal is cherished for its exceptional beauty.

ll Anglo Welsh holidays are memorable, but this one might literally come highest on the list! And it represents the ‘Welsh’ part of our name…..

Trevor’s awesome Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, nicknamed the ‘Stream in the Sky’ for obvious reasons, carries the Llangollen canal 126ft high above the River Dee. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument; a Grade I Listed structure and was granted World Heritage status in June 2009, putting it on an equal footing with the Great Barrier Reef and Statue of Liberty! It towers above the heart of this breathtaking 18km long site, stretching from Gledrid Bridge near Rhoswiel in Wales, to the Horseshoe Falls, on the River Dee.

Situated right on the doorstep of our picturesque base, you can choose the Llangollen cruise for the experience of a lifetime. In your boat, the effect is that of being suspended in mid-air. The views are spectacular, so don’t forget your camera!

ELLESMERE ELL ERE PORT RT RT The Bo Boaat at Museum Brid ridgge 14 14 477

With delightful Llangollen town only a two hour cruise away, don’t miss out on a visit to The Steam Railway Centre. Navigate the Llangollen to experience one of the UK’s most stunning stretches of inland waterway. There are tunnels, lift bridges and not too many locks as you roll through the rolling plains, rich in wildlife. The Dee Valley with its little towns of Chirk and Corwen and Lake Bala, is a gateway of discovery to the hidden secrets of this fascinating area of North Wales.

our holiday starts in the small Yorkshire town of Silsden, which dates back to Saxon times, with its duck pond in the centre of the main street. Going east from Silsden, the canal passes through the typical Yorkshire stone built villages of Kildwick and Farnhill and on into a dense wooded area famous for its bluebells and deer. Through Bradley - a typical ‘mill village’ with cricket field and a very nice country pub. Then on to Skipton, the ‘Gateway to the Dales’ with a market four days a week, and a Farmers’ market once a month. The canal continues through countryside to the delightful village of Gargrave, where it runs close

to the river Aire. It is also the start of a flight of six locks, followed quickly by another six locks at Bank Newton, hailed by many as the most beautiful locks on the whole canal system. These take the canal up into the Dales with stunning views, until you reach the hamlet of East Marton, with its famous double arch bridge. From here, continue into the countryside to the three locks at Greenberfield, also in a very picturesque setting. These locks take the canal onto the summit, and through Salterforth, then to Foulridge, and the famous mile long tunnel (ask about the story of the swimming cow!!) If you have longer on the canal, and are feeling energetic, you can carry on through the Lancashire cotton towns, over Burnley embankment

and onto Wigan with its flight of 21 locks. If you decide to travel east from Silsden towards Leeds, then, along with swing bridges, you will encounter the famous Grade 1 listed ‘Bingley Five Rise’ locks, which take you down 60ft followed by ‘Bingley Three Rise’ which drop a mere 29ft. There are a few more locks before you reach Saltaire, which is a World Heritage Site built by Sir Titus Salt for his mill workers. Here you can visit Salts Mill, which has an art gallery showing the work of David Hockney, a café and various other shops.

Our base is situated on the 20 mile lock-free summit of the beautiful and rural Leicester section of the Grand Union Canal in between two of the most impressive (manned) staircase locks in the UK - Watford and the 10 rise Foxton flight.

The famous Foxton Flight consists of two “staircases”each of five locks (once you’ve started, you have to finish!) but there is a ‘pound’ in the middle (a canal layby) so a boat can pass if it’s coming in the opposite direction. On a good day you could probably do all the locks in an hour or so, so it’s not as daunting as it sounds and the lock keeper is there to help.

From here it’s well worth taking around a 3 hour cruise along a rural stretch to the historic town of Market Harborough and other places to discover are Welford, Yelvertoft and Crick with its fine Church, proper Old English pubs (all serving great food and drink and many championing real ales). Crick Boat Show and Waterways Festival is a fantastic place to be on May Bank Holiday weekends! Life on the waterways is part of the culture here and Anglo Welsh is always proud that its customers can be a real part of it.

There’s also a Museum here which shows how the Foxton inclined plane was built in the nineteenth century to haul boats up the hillside – which must have been quite a sight. It’s now in the process of being restored with the help of a Lottery grant.

The Warwickshire Ring

The Droitwich Ring

The Stourport Ring

A world famous ring that contrasts the quiet of the Avon with the locks of the Lickey Hills and achievable in a busy one week, cruising 9 hours per day from Wootton Wawen and Tardebigge (130 locks) or a comfortable two week cruise, cruising a leisurely 6 hours per day. (Remember, time spent on the River Avon costs an extra licence fee, which is payable on the river en route).

Originally opened in 1771 although last used 65 years ago the ring has recently undergone extensive renovation. The ring is a 6 mile stretch of water, which completes the 22-mile Droitwich ring. This is Europe’s only ring that can be completed in a mid week break from Tardebigge, cruising 7 hours per day.

Almost totally rural route passing some wonderful landmarks and achievable in ten days with a steady 6-8 hours per day from Stockton (94 locks), North Kilworth (120 locks), Wootton Wawen (128 locks) and Tardebigge (121 locks).

Circuits and Rings

The Avon Ring

This superb ring takes in the Staffs & Worcs Canal, the Worcs & Birmingham Canal, the Birmingham Canal Navigation and an upper section of the River Severn. You can complete this from Tardebigge in a hugely popular week, cruising 8 hours per day (118 locks) or a good ten days from Wootton Wawen, at 7 hours per day (190 locks).

O

ver the next few pages you’ll be able to look in a bit more depth at the complete range of stylish layouts and spacious set-ups of our extensive fleet. With boats that sleep from 2 to 12 people comfortably, it’s up to you to decide how much space you need for your holiday. This symbol guide indicates the location of berths, bathrooms, storage and other facilities on board. Each layout has a weekly price band number and a short break price band letter which refer to the holiday prices on page 52. When a +2 is shown in the layout this means an extra two berths can be made up by converting the dining area to an extra double, or in some cases, two extra singles. If you are unsure of anything, as always, please call our booking team on 0117 3041122 for a ‘phone walk-round’ of the boat. Cruiser II Class- 6 + 2 Berth - Size: 65ft x 6ft 10 ins

Terms and conditions Please read these terms and conditions carefully when you book a holiday with us you are entering into a contract, which binds us in various ways. You are strongly advised to ensure you have adequate personal travel insurance, which should also cover any of your potential liabilities in this agreement. 1. Definitions.“The Company” means Anglo Welsh Ltd trading as Anglo Welsh Waterway Holidays.“The Hirer” means the designated Skipper named on the Handover Certificate. Where there is more than one Hirer, they shall be individually responsible and liable under this agreement. 2. Booking Agreement. A booking is a legally binding contract. Submission of a booking form is an offer by the Hirer and an agreement to the Company’s Terms and Conditions. The booking agreement is offered only if and when the Company issues a written boat hire confirmation. The entire contract between the Company and the hirer is contained in these conditions, the booking form and the boat handover certificate. No representations, terms, warranty or condition expressed or implied shall be deemed to be or have been made or agreed or imported by reference to any other by writing, advertisement or conversation. No Agent or representative of the Company has any right to alter or vary or waive any of these conditions. Nor is any such person authorised to undertake any liability whatsoever on behalf of the company. Where more than one boat is booked on the same booking form each boat shall be deemed to the subject of a separate contract. 3. Group Bookings, Age Limits and Unsuitable Hirers. The Hirer must be aged 18 years or older. The Hirer warrants that whenever the boat is driven by a person aged under 18, that they will at all times be under the close supervision of a competent person aged 18 years or older. The Hirer warrants that two able body people aged 18 years or older will be aboard the boat, taking responsibility of boat and crew at all times. The Hirer must provide on the booking form all details of all persons in their party. On arrival at the base, the boat handover certificate must be completed in full. The company reserves the right to cancel any booking made in contravention of either of the above conditions, on or before the start date and any monies paid to the company shall be forfeit. The company may, at its discretion, cancel any booking and refuse to handover the boats to any person or group who in the company’s opinion is not suitable to take charge on the grounds of infirmity, ill health, disability, or who have failed to demonstrate a reasonable standard of competence following appropriate instruction in boat handling. In this event, the company will refund all monies paid for the boat hire and the contract shall be discharged without any further liability on either party. The company may, at its discretion, cancel any booking and refuse to handover the boat to any person or group who in the company’s opinion is not suitable to take charge on the grounds of suspected influence of alcohol or drugs. In this event, the company will not refund any monies paid for the boat hire and the contract shall be discharged without any further liability on either party. The company may repossess the boat at any time if in the opinion of the company, the Hirer is unsuitable for the above reasons, or, if the Hirer is not behaving responsibly, or if the boat or any persons are at risk. In this event, the Hirer shall remain liable to pay the full hire price and no refund will be given. Anglo Welsh are one of the few operators who will entertain celebratory parties. Sadly, the actions of the few have repercussions on the many. Therefore, any booking may be required to place a preauthorised deposit of £250 per boat. All or a portion of this amount may be retained in the event of any transgressions to our Terms and Conditions. In the event of a party or boat declining to register this deposit upon request, the boat will not be handed over to the customer and all monies paid by the customer for the holiday shall be forfeit. Additional Deposits of up to £100 per person may be required at the discretion of Anglo Welsh Ltd. For certain parties. The deposit will be returned to you when you have finished your holiday, providing the boat and its equipment is returned on time, undamaged, clean and tidy, with no third party claim. 4. Cancellations & Changes. The agreement including the payment terms is a legally binding contract and may not be cancelled or amended except as provided in the conditions. Should the Hirer wish to cancel or amend the booking, they must advise the company immediately by telephone and at the same time send written confirmation by Recorded Delivery post. The company reserves the right to levy an administration charge of £35 for any alteration to a booking made by the Hirer after it has issued a booking confirmation. In the event of a cancellation, the deposit will be forfeited and the Hirer will pay the balance on the due date. The company may, at its discretion, waive the balance fee if the company successfully re-lets the boat for the whole of the hire period. It is therefore strongly recommended that the Hirers protect themselves against cancellation liability by taking out cancellation protection. 5. Hire Period, Collection and Return of the Boat. The hire period is as shown on the booking confirmation sheet. The company will make every effort to make the boat ready for the Hirer between 3.00pm and 4.00pm on the start date. The Hirer must notify the company of any likely delay in the Hirer’s arrival as soon as possible by telephone. Before departure, the company will give the Hirer such instructions and trials as the company sees fit, and requires the Hirer to check and sign for contents, inventory and Boat Acceptance. In the event that the boat is unavailable because of circumstances beyond the company’s control, the company may substitute a boat of similar accommodation,

but if no such boat is available, the company shall refund any payments made but shall not otherwise be liable and the contract shall be discharged. The boat shall be returned to the company’s hire base no later than 9am on the morning of the end date. The boat shall be vacated and left in a clean and tidy condition by 9.30 am on the morning of the end date. The boat may not be returned to the base early except by prior arrangement in writing with Anglo Welsh’s Head Office. Hirers are responsible for ensuring their cruising schedule allows them ample time to return to the base by the stated time. Breach of this condition will incur a minimum additional charge of £50 per hour or part thereof. In addition, the Hirer will be liable for any extra costs incurred by the company as a result of the boat not being ready for the next Hirer. Where the company has to recover a boat and return it to the base, the Hirer shall be liable for all costs incurred. 6. Prices and Payment. All prices stated are inclusive of V.A.T. and are subject to any changes in V.A.T. rate prior to the final payment being made. 7. Insurance. The boats, their equipment and inventory are insured by the company against public liability risks. The company’s insurance does not cover personal accidents or loss or damage to personal effects. Hirers and their crews are strongly advised to take out their own personal insurance cover. The Hirer shall pay a compulsory £50.00 accidental damage waiver for each booking. Accidental damage waiver does not cover damage arising from speeding, contact with a lock sill causing damage to the rudder, skeg or stern gear, TV aerials, chimneys, malicious or intentional damage to the boat, or to other boats and or property, loss or damage of boat inventory and equipment. The late return of a boat or return of the boat in an unclean condition is not covered by the Accidental damage waiver. The Hirer will indemnify the company against all costs, damage, expenses, liability and claims howsoever arising from the negligence, neglect or default of the Hirer to the extent that they are not covered by the company’s policy. 8. Obeying the Rules of the Waterways. The Hirer agrees to comply with the following rules at all times for the Health & Safety of the persons on the boat and other persons and the boat and its property: - The boat may not tow nor may it be allowed to be towed by another craft, except under professional assistance in the event of an emergency. Not to cruise between sunset and sunrise. The boat is only equipped to cruise during daylight hours. To observe all speed limits. Not to race or to cruise at a speed which causes a wash, or disturbs or inconveniences other waterway users. Not to take nor allow to be carried on the boat, any dinghies, canoes, inflatables, portable heaters, barbecues of any kind, bicycles, vehicles, lighting equipment, TV sets, any electrical appliances (save razors), inflammable liquids or substances, gas cylinders, car batteries, Fire arms or any other items which might cause dangers or hazards. Not to use the boat for business purposes. Not to allow on the boat at any time more persons than the maximum number of berths. Not to have or to carry live fishing bait on the boat. At all times to observe all bye laws, navigational limits, or instructions and advice of British Waterways or any other navigational authorities, the company and their respective officers and employees. The company reserves the right at its discretion, without liability, to restrict cruising areas or routes in light of prevailing conditions. 9. Accidents. The Hirer is in charge of the boat and is responsible for its safe navigation and return. In the event of an accident the hirer must: -Get full details of all other persons involved as well as relevant boat names and registrations. The Hirer must inform the company immediately with full details. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ADMIT OR ALLOW ANOTHER PERSON ABOARD THE BOAT TO ADMIT ANY LIABILITY TO ANY OTHER PERSON. Not have repairs carried out without the company’s express permission. At all times obtain and follow the company’s instructions. In the event that the company’s insurance cover is prejudiced or invalidated by any failure on the part of the Hirer to comply with the provisions of this condition, the Hirer shall indemnify the company in respect of liability claims, loss, damage or expenses incurred. The Hirer shall be responsible for getting the boat off mud banks or other grounding and for removal of weeds, rope and other matter from propellers. The Hirer is responsible for and shall indemnify the company against any claim or charge made by any Navigation Authority for damage to waterway property or loss of water. 10. Repairs and Breakdowns. The Hirer shall notify the company in the event of breakdown, damage, theft or loss and shall provide full details and shall comply with all company instructions. The Hirer must not allow any repairs, adjustment or service without the company’s prior approval. The Hirer shall have no claim on the company as a result of breakdown or the failures of the boat and its equipment, or for any delays caused by repairs to the boat. 11. Car parking & Hirer’s Personal Property. Free parking is provided for customers by arrangement, although at certain times of the year spaces are limited. The Hirer agrees to comply with the Company’s instructions on car parking. THE COMPANY ACCEPTS NO LIABILITY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE TO VEHICLES OR THE CONTENTS THEREIN. The Hirer is particularly advised not to leave valuables or ready portable items in cars. The Hirer is strongly recommended to take out Personal Holiday Insurance. 12. Fuel. The boat is handed over ready fuelled but the cost of hire does not include the fuel consumed. A fuel deposit is payable 8 weeks before the start of your holiday. At the end of your holiday period the

boat must be refuelled and any difference to the deposit paid will be refunded or charged. The Boat Owner or the Company may make a fuel surcharge if there is any material increase of diesel or gas prices or duty. Whilst water supply and moorings on the canals are normally free of charge, any costs incurred are the responsibility of the Hirer. Where pump-outs are required to toilet tanks, the cost is the responsibility of the Hirer unless carried out at the Company’s base. 13. Pets. You are normally allowed to bring your cat or dog with you, but you must tell us at the time of making your booking. YOU MUST BRING YOUR PET BLANKET OR BASKET WITH YOU AS PETS ARE ONLY ALLOWED ON THE CLEAR UNDERSTANDING THAT UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY THEY LIE ON THE BEDDING OR CHAIRS. Your pet must not be left unattended on the boat. Pets are not covered under the company’s insurance policy and the Hirer is liable for any costs incurred by extra cleaning and any delays incurred as a cause. Registered Assistance Dogs will be accepted free of charge although all conditions apply. 14. Complaints. The Hirer will check the boat and its equipment fully, immediately after taking possession of the boat. Any shortcomings must be brought to the company’s attention BEFORE the boat leaves the base. The Hirer shall sign a Boat Acceptance form before departure and thereafter the Hirer is completely responsible for the boat its equipment and its operation until it is handed back to the company at the end of the hire. Any shortcomings subsequently discovered shall immediately be noticed to the company by telephone in order to give the company the opportunity to take necessary remedial action. The company shall not be liable in respect of any matter not so noticed immediately. 15. Exemption. The company shall not be liable for any matters arising from any cause beyond the company’s reasonable control, or not due to the company’s negligence or wilful default including (without limitation) death or personal injury of Hirers their crew and passengers, loss or damage to property, non-fulfillment or interruption of the booking or breakdown delays, mechanical problems, defects, damage, restrictions or obstructions, repairs or damage to waterways, non availability of routes, navigational works, storms, floods, droughts, ice, or in respect of any consequential loss, damage, injury, expense or claim.15. Brochure & Website. The brochure and website is intended as a general guide and the company will not be liable in the event of any differences in the boat supplied and reserves the right to make modifications. IF THE HIRER’S PARTY INCLUDES ANY INFIRM PERSONS, THE HIRER MUST MAKE RELEVANT ENQUIRIES AT TIME OF BOOKING. Damage Waiver (compulsory) The Damage Waiver Fee is £50.00. It is non-refundable and avoids the requirement for a damage deposit payment. There are certain exclusions: •

Return of the boat late

Return of the boat in an unclean condition

Damage arising from negligence, malicious or intentional damage to the boat, its inventory, third party property, the canal and its structures.

Damage to the rudder, skeg or transmission due to contact with a lock sill

Excessive speeding in the boat – the limit is 4m.p.h.

In the event of the above, the Hirer will be liable for all additional costs incurred above and beyond the Damage Waiver payment. Cancellation Protection Scheme A contract exists once a deposit has been paid and a booking has been confirmed, and you are liable for the whole cost of the holiday even if you are unable to take your holiday. Anglo Welsh Ltd. has created a Cancellation Protection Scheme (CPS) to offer you protection against this liability in certain circumstances. The CPS is calculated at £25 per short break holiday, and £40 per one week holiday, and multiples thereof. Where any of the qualifying circumstances are met, all hire monies will be repaid in full less the CPS contribution fee and the Hirer will be absolved from any balancing hire payment. The decision of Anglo Welsh Ltd. is final. CPS only covers complete cancellation prior to the start of the holiday. It does not give a pro rata refund if one or more persons are unable to take the holiday. Cover is only provided for those persons named on the booking form. Any claim must be supported by documentary evidence. Any claim must be made at the earliest opportunity by telephone and backed up in written form via Recorded Delivery Mail. Qualifying circumstances include: - Death, injury, illness, pregnancy complications or confinement immediately prior to holiday commencement (certified in all cases by a qualified registered Medical Practitioner in writing) The above circumstances would also apply to a near relative (husband, wife, father, mother, parent-in-law, sister, brother, child) or a close business associate. Jury Witness service in a court of law. Fire, storm, flood, subsidence or malicious damage making the Hirer’s home uninhabitable Police requiring the Hirer’s presence following burglary at home or place of business. Cancelled orders in respect of U.K. Police and Military Personnel.

e want to make booking your holiday as easy as possible and our booking team is on hand to help you. They know the Anglo Welsh holiday business inside out and are dedicated to our customers.

How much deposit is required?

When do I pay the final balance?

We offer a seven day, no obligation, provisional booking service, giving you time to organise your party and holiday dates.

Q&A When is the booking office open?

We are here from 8.30am to 5.30pm on weekdays, from 9am to 4pm on Saturdays and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays and bank holidays. The booking office is closed on Easter Sunday, from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day and on New Year’s Day. Messages can be left outside office hours and we will call you straight back when we reopen.

What do I need to be able to book?

Talk to us

to

The deposit is 25% of your basic brochure holiday price (Box A on your booking form), or full payment if your holiday is within eight weeks of booking. With the deposit, we also require your cancellation scheme premium of £40 per week, or £25 per short break. You’ll need to pay the balance of your invoice eight weeks before your holiday starts. You can either pay by cheque or credit/debit card. If you would like to pay by cheque, please make cheques payable to ‘Anglo Welsh Waterway Holidays’.

When do I pay the damage waiver?

We will show the damage waiver (£50) on your invoice, which will be due for payment with your balance. Please note the damage waiver is non-refundable.

When do I pay for fuel?

All our boats start with a full tank of fuel - plenty to cover a steady two week cruise. You pay a fuel deposit when you book your holiday – this is £90 per week or £50 per short break. When you bring the boat back to us the balance of the deposit is refundable after deducting the fuel used. If you have used fuel in excess of the deposit, you will be asked to pay the difference.
