HIS WAY PASTOR RETIRES

Rev. Nancy Barber and her husband Gary, who reside in Silver Creek, N.Y., have recently retired as pastors of His Way Assembly of God. The church began on July 2, 1995 with the initial meetings at the Roat Acres community building. In the Fall of 1995 the church shared the facilities of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Lake Street for a year and a half before relocating to a storefront on N. Main Street in the village. After a fire in 2001 the church was invited to utilize the facilities of the 1st Congregational United Church of Christ in Angola. In 2002 the church purchased the former Town of Evans Senior Center on N. Main Street and has continued to minister to families in the area until the present time. While in Angola Pastor Barber participated in the LSACC and served as their president and vice president. The church hosted the Operation Good Neighbor Food Pantry for three years until their need for a larger facility. The congregation has now welcomed the new pastor, Rev. Andrew Evanock, his wife Lisa and family to carry on the ministry to the Angola area. The Evanocks have just returned from 13 years of ministry to children and youth in Florida and are eager to meet local families. The church is located at 8545 N. Main Street, Angola. Sunday worship is at 10 a.m. with many other activities during the week for the whole family. __________

BUFFALO CANALSIDE PROGRAM AT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The evolution of Buffalo’s waterfront from the early 1800’s to the present will be the topic for the Evans Historical Society meeting on Monday, November 26th at 7 p.m. Mr. Mike Vogel, a local resident, will provide a power point presentation on the early “canal side” life in Buffalo. The interesting and sometimes rough lifestyle along the Buffalo Lake Erie port and the Erie Canal terminus will be represented. Edie Anderson, Historical Society Director, mentioned that Mr. Vogel is very knowledgeable about the waterfront and has authored a book entitled America’s Crossroad. Mr. Vogel is a retired editor of the ‘Buffalo News’ editorial page after a long career at the News. He also serves as President of the Buffalo Lighthouse Association. Ms. Anderson indicated that Mr. Vogel’s book will be available for purchase at the meeting. The program will be held on Monday, November 26th at 7 p.m. in the Evans Historical Society Museum (1857 school house) on Route 5 in Evans Center. The public is invited, refreshments will be served, and there is no charge for admission. __________

The strength of the Fredonia State men's swimming and diving team is in its junior class. The group is led by John Estanislau (East Longmeadow, Mass.), an All-SUNYAC performer at the 2012 championship meet. He was second in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle, and third in the 50-yard freestyle – setting school records and all three events. He was also part of a record-setting 400-yard freestyle relay quartet. The other top juniors are Eric Jordan (Lancaster), Andrew Case (Clarence Center), Adrian Van Hall (Owego), and David Adamczak (Akron). Van Hall and Adamczak are the co-captains. "They have some the aspects I want my captains to have," head coach Arthur Wang said. "They have moral character. They want to lead by example. They want to accept responsibility, and want to make their teammates accountable." Jordan's best event last year was the 200-yard backstroke while Case finished in the top eight at the conference meet in the 100-yard butterfly in 200-yard butterfly. Hall got his first taste of conference championship competition last year in the distance of vents. Adamczak, slowed by a heel injury, is the top returning sprinter. Wang is expecting big things from two seniors – Charles Arrigo (Brant) and Conor Drmacich (Tonawanda). Arrigo qualified for SUNYACs in the 100 breaststroke in his last dual meet of last season, while Drmacich is set to make his mark in the 200 backstroke and 200 freestyle. "Charlie has come along way so far," Wayne said. "He recognizes this is his senior year. He has worked extremely hard and has done a lot of extra work. We expect him to contribute right away this year. And Connor feels he needs to prove something, too." The Blue Devils top diver is also a senior. Ryan Fuller (Endicott) won both boards at last year's conference meet and was named Male Diver of the Year in the SUNYAC. Yet somehow he failed to make the NCAA meet under the old criteria. This year the NCAA has gone to zone meets in diving. Fuller hopes to be among the top men in the region competing next March 2 and 3 at Ithaca College. The top divers from the zone will advance to the national meet. "He certainly was disappointed (not making nationals)," Wang said of Fuller. "He's certainly ready to build on the success from last year and take it to the zone meet." Wang has added five freshmen, led by diver Rafael Santiago (Middletown). The Blue Devils will be looking to improve on last year's fifth-place finish in the conference. "We have a very good blend," Wang said, "of seasoned returnees and freshmen. We have come of age." ___________

SCS CELEBRATES RED RIBBON WEEK

The students were asked to add red, white and blue to the school uniform to celebrate "I Elect to be Drug Free", add tie-dye to their uniform to celebrate "Say 'Peace Out' to Drugs" and wear crazy socks to "Sock it to Drugs". Other activities included planting red tulip bulbs & signing a drug free pledge. On Friday, October 26th, the sheriff helicopter landed in the parking lot and students toured the Buffalo Police Department Underwater Rescue Unit, tried on SWAT team gear, walked through an Army Truck, sat in a Town of Evans Police Car and saw how a Drug dog goes to work. EXCHANGE STUDENT RETURNS TO LAKE SHORE

Mariell Mueller, from Berlin Germany, made great friends during her exchange year at Lake Shore High School in 2005-2006, friends that she has remained close to. These friendships brought her back recently to attend a wedding, but while here it was also important for her to visit her alma mater Lake Shore High. During her visit back to the school, she shadowed German language teacher Mr. Fritz Schattauer and worked with the current German students. In the German 4 and German 5 classes, she answered German questions about the culture and life in Germany today. Topics ranged from popular music and TV shows to the Turkish minority and politics. Students posed their questions in German to develop communication skills. German 3 classes were particularly fun for Mariell. Each class was working on Oktoberfest activities, so Mariell joined the teacher in teaching them a German dance. Danke Schoen Mariell! Wir vermissen dich! __________

Mrs. Kromer and Mrs. Atzrott's class were in charge of the planning and organizing of the day and did a fantastic job. ___________

TEAM INFINITY STUDENTS ARE SWEET!

Seventh graders on Team Infinity have shown their support for our troops in a very sweet way. Students sacrificed their Halloween loot and managed to collect over 45 pounds of candy to donate to Soldier's Angels, an organization that serves military men and women overseas and at home. The candy is on its way to the California- based organization which will take care of sending it out to the soldiers. Shipping costs were donated by the team teachers who were so proud of the kids for their generous donations. __________

BOB CARLSON TO RETIRE

Pictured is Bob Carlson (a 1964 graduate of Lake Shore Central High School and a “Lake Shore Central Wall of Fame” recipient, 2001) receiving the Youth In Music “Spirit Award” at the Mall of America Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Carlson’s band (The Lincoln Patriot Marching band from Sioux Falls, South Dakota) compete in the Youth In Music field competition on October 13, 2012. The band placed 2nd among twenty-two bands from five states in the Midwest. They also won best horn line, best drum majors, and best colorguard. The Lincoln band will march in the 2013 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1st. Bob Carlson plans to retire in May 2013 after 44 years of directing bands in Minnesota and South Dakota. He has taken bands three times to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, and this is the third time he has had a band in the Tournament of Roses Parade. His bands have performed half-time shows at four Minnesota Vikings games and one Greenbay Packers game. Carlson’s bands have competed in Portland, OR, Cheyenne, WY, Orlando, FL, Washington DC, Omaha, NE, Minneapolis, MN, Des Moines, IA, and Kansas City, MO including Calgary, Alberta and Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada. Bob Carlson served as assistant and head conductor for the Midwest Ambassadors of Music for nine European tours. Bob received the “Outstanding Educators” award from the Parkston, South Dakota Jaycees and the Pipestone, Minnesota Jaycees. He was named to the “Lake Shore Central Wall of Fame” in 2001 and was named the “Outstanding Educator Alumnus” at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota in 2000. He received his Master’s Degree from the University of South Dakota in 1977. Carlson received “The John Phillip Sousa Sudler Award for Excellence” at the International Band and Orchestra Convention in Chicago, Illinois in 1998. He received the “Mayor’s Award for the Arts’ in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 2008. Bob Carlson and his son, Dan, were featured on the front cover of School Band and Orchestra Magazine (a national publication) in June of 2000. Carlson taught at Parkston, South Dakota (1969-1978), Pipestone, Minnesota (1978-1999) and at Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota (1999 to present). The last fourteen years at Lincoln High School have been with his son, Dan, in co-directorship. During Carlson’s 21 years in Pipestone, Minnesota, the Pipestone band had more students in All-State Band and Orchestra than any other school in the state of Minnesota. Over the last 13 years, the Lincoln band has had more students in All-State Band than any other school in the state, averaging nearly 30 students per year, which is more than one-fifth of the South Dakota All-State Band. Bob and his wife, Mary, have 3 children: Kevin, Dan, and Kathy, and seven grandchildren. Bob is the brother of Janet Milliken of Angola and Ron Carlson of Eden, and the son of the late Gilbert and Pauline Carlson of Angola.

TOWN OF EVANS PIONEER CEMETERY DEDICATION

A formal dedication of the Town of Evans Pioneer Cemetery was held on site on October 20, 2012. The Town now has the distinction of having another site placed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The dedication ceremony included a welcome from Town of Evans Supervisor Keith E. Dash, the Pledge of Allegiance with colors was provided by Town of Evans American Legion Newcomb Long Post #928 and local Boy Scout Troop #421. A dedication prayer was offered by Sandra Brant, Town Planning Director, followed by a salute to Revolutionary and Civil War Soldiers buried in the cemetery, as well as past and present Veterans, including those currently in harms way. As Supervisor Dash unveiled the dedication marker that reads: Pioneer Cemetery 1810-1928. Burial ground of early settlers in Evans including Revolutionary and Civil War Veterans. Placed on State and National Registers of Historic Places – 2011. Town of Evans Historical Society – 2012, he stated “This event now secures our heritage for future generations, as well as insures grant funding for its continued preservation.” Remarks from honored guests followed, which included Erie County Legislator John Mills, Town Councilman Paul Cooper, Village of Angola Mayor Howard Frawley and Joseph Pisarski, President of the Evans Historical Society, which has been instrumental in continuing to improve the cemetery and assist the Town in its efforts to register the site. “With the help of many volunteers, the Society hopes to continue its efforts to make this cemetery a respectable and honorable place for those that have left us a legacy,” said Mr. Pisarski. Pioneer Cemetery is the burial ground of many early settlers, Revolutionary War and Civil War soldiers. The first burial in 1810 was a two year old boy named Sawyer Barrell. Several members of his family are also interred there. Another notable person, Asa Ames the famous sculptor, is also buried at the cemetery. The last burial was Loren Avery in 1928. After the original owners, the Methodist and Congregational Churches (that were located next to the cemetery and later on Gold Street) abandoned the cemetery, it became the responsibility of the town. The designation on the State and National Register of Historic Places resulted from extensive work by the Evans Planning office and the Evans Supervisor’s office, with volunteer assistance from Wendel Companies. __________

The Evans Township Lions Club Inc. held its annual White Cane Day on Tuesday, November 6, 2012. This fund raising effort was once again a “huge” success, thanks to the generosity of local voters. The “White Cane” with red tip is an internationally recognized identifying symbol for blind persons. Lions Clubs have historically focused their efforts on sight conservation and preventing blindness. The gift of sight is perhaps God’s greatest gift. Campaigns like “Sight First” and “Sight First II” have virtually eliminated river blindness in underdeveloped countries. Lions Club supported clinics and sight centers have provided much needed eye care, operations and treatment or corrective lenses (eye glasses) at little or no cost to the recipients. Lions Club members have donated countless hours to sight conservation. Most of the work involved is behind the scenes or covered by confidentiality rules, so the public may not be aware of the extent of it. Lions Clubs collect old, unwanted eye glasses for recycling. These glasses may improve the sight of someone other than their original owner. The Evans Club maintains 2 collection boxes in town. One is in the Tops Plaza, near Key Bank, and the other is in the Jubilee Plaza, near the ice machine. These boxes are painted yellow and have the Lions International logo on the front and sides. Donation instructions are also printed on the boxes. Public health regulations prohibit reuse of these eyeglasses in North America, so they get distributed mostly in underdeveloped countries. This distribution is coordinated by Lions Clubs International and collected eyeglasses get forwarded to them. All money collected by Lions Clubs from the public must (by our international by-laws) be spent for helping the public. Not 1 cent can be used for administrative expenses. This is not true of some other community service organizations. The public gets 100% of their donations to Lions Clubs back. Locally, some of the unnoticed services from the Evans Lions Clubs include financial help for the V.F.W. coordinated Christmas food basket drive, eye exams, and glasses for those who need them and can’t afford them, help with Christmas in the Village, Halloween Costume Parade, financial help for the Angola Gazebo Concert series, the Highland Fire Dept. “Haunted Fire Hall,” assistance with and financial support for Cradle Beach “Sunshine Day,” and local Memorial Day observances. Evans Lions also award “Community Service” scholarships each year. The Evans Township Lions Club, Inc. has lived the International Lions Clubs motto, “We Serve” for the last 65 years. Western New York is served by the Ira Ross Eye Institute and the Olmsted Center for the Visually Impaired at 1176 Main St., Buffalo, N.Y. 14209. These facilities which are partnered with the UB medical school and W.N.Y. Lions Clubs provide vision assistance to the public regardless of their ability to pay for that service. Anyone wanting more information can contact these facilities directly. Information about the Evans Township Lions Club Inc. is available at www.evanslions.com or by writing the club care of P.O. Box, 342, Angola, N.Y. 14006, or by talking to any club member. __________
