FOUR GENERATIONS CELEBRATE GET-TOGETHER

Four generations celebrated a family get together on July 26th when Adam Bowman and his wife, Emily, and son, Bradley Adam, were home on a visit from California. VILLAGE OF ANGOLA BREAKS GROUND ON LIBRARY EXPANSION

On Friday, July 27, Village of Angola officials, Angola Library Board members and community members were on hand to break ground for the Angola Library Expansion Project. The expansion will enhance the Angola Library’s ability to offer expanded educational and cultural opportunities, which had been hindered in the past due to space constraints. In coordination with the groundbreaking, Erie County Legislator John Mills hosted a very successful Library Fundraiser selling lunch items (hotdogs, sausage, water and dessert) from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Library also hosted a “used book sale” as part of the event with the proceeds to benefit the Angola Library expansion. The expansion has been made possible, in part, because of a recent grant award through the Erie County Consortium Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG). The Village will utilize these funds to construct a 33’ X 32.5’ (1,073 SF) expansion on the back end of the existing library facility. The Village will be seeking additional funding to support the project through the New York State Library Construction Grant due this fall. Appearing in photo from left to right: Village Trustee Carole Kin, Deputy Mayor Bill Houston, Mayor Hub Frawley, Angola Library Board members Mari Grennell, Jackie Haderer, Sally Needham, Mary Truby, Diane Volker, Donna Nagel, Lori Szewczyk (Director of Community Development) and Jack Kuebler. _________

ERIE COUNTY AGRICULTURAL AND FARMLAND PRPOTECTION PLAN

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, Erie County Department of Environment and Planning Commissioner Maria Whyte and the Erie County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board, are pleased to announce the release of the Draft Erie County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan. The plan will guide county support of the agriculture industry over the next 10 years. The Draft Erie County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan is available for review at www.erie.gov. Comments will be accepted until September 13. A public hearing on the draft will be hosted by the Erie County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board. It will be held: Wednesday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m., Cornell Cooperative Extension, 21 South Grove Street, East Aurora Local farms contribute in many ways to our community. Farming is a significant component of the local economy. The 2007 Census of Agriculture notes that Erie County farms sold $117 million in agricultural products. Well-managed farms protect water quality. Farms maintain scenic landscapes and wildlife habitat that not only attract tourist dollars but are integral to the quality of life of local people. Despite this, between 2002 and 2007, the amount of productive agricultural land in Erie County declined by 8 percent. The loss of farms and farmland has a negative impact on local economies as the growing, processing, buying, and selling of food has traditionally been a cornerstone of many Erie County communities. In an effort to reduce that trend, the County, contracted with American Farmland Trust to develop a new plan with specific policies to protect agricultural farmland and increase the viability of the industry. If you would like to learn more about local farms and the process county support for agriculture in the next decade, please plan on attending this important meeting. Farmers, local officials, environmentalists, and others interested in farms, food and land in the county are urged to attend. This project is funded in part by an Agricultural and Farmland Protection Planning grant awarded by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets to Erie County. __________

PLANTING BULBS & GATHERING SEEDS Get your bulbs now. As well as planting in borders and containers, why not plant in lawns or under trees for a natural look. Plant them in drifts, rather than singly and choose smaller, less showy types. Select an area where you can afford to leave the grass long in the spring until the leaves have done their work to build up next year’s bulb. Ensure that any bulbs that you purchase, especially native species, are from a guaranteed source and not taken from the wild. Plant bulbs to fill in spring gaps. If you have planting that has sprawled everywhere, but you know will die back and leave just plain soil early in the year, carefully part the foliage and plant bulbs in between plants. This works really well round herbaceous perennials that die down overwinter. Bulbs will have flowered and be out of the way by the time new growth starts next year. When you plant the bulbs, mark the outline of your planting group with small sticks or pieces of bamboo cane. This will indicate the presence of bulbs underground and thus avoid damage during general garden work in winter. Seed Saving. Look for seed heads that are turning brown and papery. Cut them from the plant, pop into a paper bag and finish off drying indoors. Shake seeds into the bag then transfer to an airtight container. Something like a Tupperware tub in the fridge is the best place to store seed til next spring. Label each seed variety clearly. If you’ve bought seeds this year, and not used the whole packet, as long as you store them somewhere cool and dry or in the fridge, they will probably still be viable next spring. Please join us on a Green Path to leave a positive impact on ourselves, our town and our world. Small changes make a big difference. __________

TO: All School Employees, Parents, and Related Organizations FROM: James Przepasniak, Superintendent of Schools RE: AHERA COMPLIANCE ACTIVITIES AHERA is a federal law enacted in 1987 which requires all school districts to re-inspect facilities for asbestos containing building materials. Our facilities have been inspected, and response actions are planned to ensure a continued safe environment for our students and employees. Activities include training of maintenance staff to prevent disturbance of asbestos and periodic re-inspection and surveillance activities by trained personnel. As required by regulations, Lake Shore Central (Evans-Brant) School District’s six-month inspection was completed as of July 2012 and is available for your review in the District Office during business hours.
