TIDINGS OF COMFORT AND JOY?

SCS CELEBRATES FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

On Thursday, October 11th, Southtowns Catholic School was invited to The Lake View Fire Station #1 on Lakeview Rd. The kids gathered around the firemen as they asked if everyone had a plan to get out of their homes in case of a fire. The firemen reminded the kids never to hide, don't play with matches and make sure you have a safe meeting place in case of a fire. The kids took a tour of the firehouse and got to see all the different gear that firemen wear. Several kids got to try on the jackets and see just how heavy they are. The kids went out to see the inside of the ambulance & the firetruck and asked several questions about what all the different equipment did. As the kids were headed back to school, they were treated with gift bags that had fire prevention magnets, fire prevention kits and activity cards with Junior Fire Inspector Certificates. Pictured here: Trition Travale, Gisele Jou, Trinity Kehoe, John Berkhoudt and Christopher Huddy with Assistant Chief Mark Szczepaniak. __________

FACING THE HOLIDAYS AFTER BEREAVEMENT When you’re grieving the death of a family member or friend, you may dread the holiday season. Thoughts of social gatherings, family traditions and obligations leave you anxious and overwhelmed. Your sadness can seem unbearable. You may wish you could skip these next 2 months and go straight to the routine of next year - but you can’t. What can you do to lessen your stress and loneliness? “Surviving the Holidays” seminar on Saturday, Nov. 17th, 103 p.m. A GriefShare Surviving the Holidays seminar, held November 17th at Angola Wesleyan Church (636 Herr Rd.) form 1-3 p.m., offers practical, actionable strategies for making it through the holiday season. At this two-hour seminar, you’ll view a video featuring advice from people in grief who have faced the holidays after their loss. You’ll receive a Holiday Survival Guide with over 30 encouraging readings, helpful charts and tips to manage the holiday season during this difficult time. A GriefShare Surviving the Holidays, you’ll meet the other grieving people who have an understanding of what you’re going through. They won’t judge you or force you to share, but will accept you where you are and will offer comfort and support. “When I went to GriefShare,” said Marion. “I realized there are different ways to grieve.” Your holiday season won’t be easy; your emotions may ambush you and suck you under at times. But you can choose to walk through this season in a way that honors your loved ones and puts you on the path of health and healing. To register or find out more about GriefShare Surviving the Holidays, call Nadine Houghton at 549-1825 or Pastor Rich Wollan at 780-7267 or email: rrwollan@yahoo.com __________

LAKE SHORE GOLF ON THE UPSWING:

Three years ago the Lake Shore Varsity golf team was winless with only a seven-man roster. This year the Varsity Boys Golf Team posted a 4-6 record which secured a third place finish in the ECIC small school south division. The team’s success is greatly in part to a great intramural golf program run by Coach Mike Bartolotti. The team has grown to 12 players and has become a force in ECIC and sectional competition. Seniors Matt Kardach, Fred Ball, and Nick Schifano contributed throughout the year with strong play and leadership helped shape the younger player’s attitude and commitment to the team. The roster is stacked with returning talent including Jim Barry, Ben Garvey, Sean Sauer, Adam Campagnolo, Kyle Dearth, Mike Murphy and a very talented Cary Ignaczak who at only 12 years old is one of the steadiest players on the team. Cary has already competed in 20 Varsity golf matches. The Eagle team also has sent two representatives to the ECIC championship this year. Junior Matt Vona and Sophomore Alec Lezama both represented Lake Shore in a field of the 80 best golfers in the competitive ECIC division. Under very cold and windy conditions, both Vona and Lezama failed to qualify for the sectionals. __________

LAKE SHORE GSA WELCOMES GRADUATE

Mike Seitz, 1995 Lake Shore Graduate, was welcomed by the GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) for an afterschool visit recently. Currently the director of the GLYS Drop-in center, Mike was eager to meet the students of the GSA and share with them his experiences of growing up gay in Evans. He noted how times had changed. Even in the nineties, there was no support in school for gay youth. Lake Shore, as most schools now, currently has a GSA Club to provide this support. Mike shared not only his experiences, but also discussed issues of bullying in school and community resources for LGBT students. The Gay and Lesbian Youth Services Drop-in Center is located at 371 Delaware Avenue and is open Monday through Thursday from 2:30 to 7:30 to and provides support for GLBT youth as well as a safe place for them to meet each other and build a community. For information on GLYS or Lake Shore GSA please contact Mike at GLYS or Fritz Schattauer and Sophie Chimera Lake Shore GSA advisors at the High School. __________

Easy ways to celebrate Veterans Day

HAPPY VETERAN’S DAY

VETERAN’S DAY CONCERT with Narration

Sunday, November 11th 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Evans Chapel 985 Church Road (Behind Catalano Motors) Patriotic and Inspirational Songs and Message. Gift for all Veterans present. All veterans (war and peace time), active military, widows of veterans, Gold Star mothers, and patriotic Americans are invited!

Veterans Day is an annual holiday when veterans of the armed forces are honored and celebrated in the United States. Many people confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day. While both days honor members of the armed forces, there’s a distinction between the two holidays. Memorial Day, which is celebrated in May, is a day designated for remembering service‑ men and servicewomen who died while serving. Veterans Day, which is observed in November, honors all military veterans. The role of the brave men and women who serve in the military is an important one, and it’s one that war‑ rants appreciation and celebration. The following are a few easy ways to celebrate veterans and their signif‑ icant contribution to our country this Veterans Day. * Offer your thanks. Serving in the military can feel like a thankless job, as those who have not served might not be aware of the risks men and women in the military take and the sacrifices they must make to protect our country and help the less fortunate across the globe. As a result, something as simple as saying “Thank you” to a current service member or military veteran can go a long way. Veterans know they don’t serve in vain, but it’s still a great idea to let them know how much you appreciate their efforts and sacrifices. * Help families of active military. Many service mem‑ bers are currently stationed and serving overseas, and their families back home may need or just appre‑ ciate a helping hand. Invite family members of active military over for dinner, offer to do chores like cutting the grass or shoveling the driveway when it snows or help around the house if something needs fixing. Even if families of active members serving overseas appear to be getting along great, offer your friend‑ ship and let them know you’re there to help should anything arise. * Visit hospitalized veterans. Unfortunately, many vet‑ erans are hospitalized after suffering an injury during a tour of duty. These veterans sacrificed their physical well-being to protect our way of life, and many spend extended periods of time in the hospital. Visiting a hospital to get to know a veteran and spend some time with him or her, sharing a few laughs and thank‑ ing them for their service, is a great way to celebrate the holiday and lift a veteran’s spirits at the same time. Recruit friends and family members to visit hospital‑ ized veterans as well.

If You Really Want to Quit Smoking…

Here’re the facts: In the US, approximately 19% of the adult population smokes daily. Smokers often aren’t as public as they used to be- due to general disapproval and regulations, smoking for many has been pushed underground. Many people now seem to judge smokers harshly, citing facts about the evils of nico‑ tine addiction: It’s deadly, it’s stinky, it’s expensive. Most seem to feel common sense should prevail- any smoker with half a brain should simply quit. The fact is, many smokers say that they plan to quit ‘someday’. So what’s the problem? As most non-smokers would so helpfully council: “So just quit. Get tough. Suck it up. Just do it.” And many smokers are in complete agree‑ ment. But here’s the problem: they’ve tried to quit. Many times. And they have failed. They judge themselves more harshly than the most militant non-smokers. It becomes a vicious circle of try to quit, fail, get depressed about themselves and smoke more.

New Patients Welcome To Treat Heal and Serve

Smoking is it worth it?

Smokers tend to blame themselves for their weakness: ‘If I weren’t so lame, if I were stronger, I’d quit. I am weak. I am stupid. I let nicotine run my life. I try to quit and I fail, again. I am hopeless.’ They buy into the commonly held opinion that if they only loved their family more, or respected their own health more, if they weren’t so pathetic, they would summon the strength to do the right thing and quit. Here’s the reality: Nicotine is the ultimate designer drug. A cigarette is simply, by definition, a nicotine delivery device. It is engineered and specifically crafted to most efficiently deliver the addictive drug nicotine into the smoker’s body, where, once comfortably ensconced there, violently rejects being dethroned. SO: Stop Blaming Yourself for your ‘weakness’. Know thy enemy. Nicotine was designed to do exactly what it’s doing to you— to own you so that you must smoke all day every day or suffer significant physical discomfort. This is no accident. This was done purposely for one reason- to create your physical need to indulge in their product daily ensures giant profits. Big Tobacco isn’t stupid. They have actually added nearly 10% more nicotine—the substance that keeps you addicted—over the past ten years! Smokers need to know the facts. Stop blaming yourselves. Get angry. NOW: Decide when to quit. This is not easy: after all, you don’t want to try to quit right before the Big Party. Or the Big Crisis. Or before the Holidays. ETC. Guess whatThere is always stress. There will always be the smoking trigger events. Once you face the reality of that fact, you’ll realize that the very best time to quit is NOW. Quitting. How to do that and live through the process without either jumping off a bridge or alienating every friend and family member that you have. The fact is- it is doable. Yes YOU CAN quit. Maybe not easy, but DOABLE. And worth the effort! So challenge yourself: 1) Decide to quit. Make a list of things that will be better when you are no longer ‘a smoker’. Set a quit date to take place within the next WEEK. 2) Stop smoking in your home and your car. Stop your association of smok‑ ing in your main living spaces. Let NO ONE smoke in your home. 3) Choose a quitting method. Here are your choices: a) Cold Turkey: Nicotine is addictive. Most smokers continue to smoke all day, because if they don’t smoke, their bodies respond with escalating discomfort, cravings and irritability. Most smokers find cold turkey much too miserable. b) Nicotine Patches, Gum or lozenges:. Nicotine replacement methods of quitting have reported very low success rates. There is a questionable logic to using the addictive substance to quit that substance. When the patch comes off, often, the cigarette goes back in. c) Drug Therapies: There are several drugs available to help with smoking cessa‑ tion. The reality however is there are side effects to the two most popular pills, Zyban and Chantix, and they are significant. d) Low level laser therapy: Often thought of as a new therapy, lllt has been around for 30+ years. It involves one painless 20 minute session using the laser to stimu‑ late acupuncture points, or basic trigger points to achieve specific responses. It is tremendously successful doing two things: Blocking the nicotine craving and calming the nervous system so that you do not suffer the irritability often associated with quit‑ ting smoking. It is drug free. It is immediate. It is permanent, unless you reintroduce nicotine into your body. It is relatively inexpensive— about $150. The bottom line: there will never be a better time to quit than NOW. Choose a day. Choose a method. And JUST DO IT. Take back your LIFE!

Quitting Smoking, the basics by Dr. Celestino Pietrantoni

The benefits of quitting smoking include a lower chance of getting or dying from heart disease, lung disease, or cancer. It can also lower your chances of getting osteoporosis, a condition that makes your bones weak. Plus, quitting smoking can help your skin look younger. Quitting smoking will improve your health no matter how old you are, and no matter how long or how much you have smoked. Things you should I do if you want to quit smoking can be remembered by the word “START”. S, Set a quit date; T, Tell family, friends, and the people around you that you plan to quit; A, Anticipate or plan ahead for the tough times you’ll face while quitting; R, Remove cigarettes and other tobacco products from your home, car, and work; and T, Talk to your doctor about getting help to quit. How can my doctor help? Your doctor can give you advice on the best way to quit. He or she can also put you in touch with counselors or other people you can call for support. Plus, your doctor can give you medicines to Reduce your craving for cigarettes and Reduce the unpleasant symptoms that happen when you stop smoking (called “withdrawal symptoms”). You can also get help from a free phone line (1-800-QUIT-NOW) or go online to www.smokefree.gov. Some people who stop smoking become temporarily depressed. Some of them need treatment for depression. If you get depressed when you quit smoking, tell your doctor. Medicines that help you quit smoking work in different ways. Nicotine replace‑ ment therapy eases withdrawal and reduces your body’s craving for nicotine, the main drug found in cigarettes. Bupropion is a prescription medicine that re‑ duces your desire to smoke. This medicine is sold under the brand names Zy‑ ban® and Wellbutrin®. It is also available in a generic version, which is cheaper than brand-name medicines. Varenicline (brand name: Chantix®) is a prescrip‑ tion medicine that reduces withdrawal symptoms and cigarette cravings. How does counseling work? Counseling can happen during formal office visits or just over the phone. A counselor can help you figure out what triggers your smoking and what to do instead overcome cravings and figure out what went wrong when you tried to quit before What works best? Studies show that people have the best luck at quitting if they take medicines to help them quit and work with a counselor. It might also be helpful to combine nicotine replacement with one of the prescription medi‑ cines that help people quit. Will I gain weight if I quit? Yes, you might gain a few pounds. But quitting smoking will have a much more positive effect on your health than weighing a few pounds more. Plus, you can help prevent some weight gain by being more active and eating less. What else can I do to improve my chances of quitting? Start exercising, stay away from smokers and places that you associate with smoking. If people close to you smoke, ask them to quit with you. Keep gum, hard candy, or something to put in your mouth handy. Don’t give up, even if you start smoking again. It takes most people a few tries before they succeed.

Pets affected by secondhand smoke, too

Lighting up a cigarette may not just hurt yourself and the people around you. Your pet may be paying the price for your habit, too. Veterinarians say that secondhand smoke is a threat to dogs and cats as well as hu‑ mans. Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke, or ETS, is a mixture of the smoke given off by the burning end of a cigarette or cigar and the smoke that is exhaled by the smoker. Research indicates that secondhand smoke contains more than 5,000 substances, many of which are known to cause cancer in humans and other animals. A number of studies have found that nonsmokers who regularly breathe the tobacco smoke from others are at a higher risk for developing heart disease or certain cancers, like lung cancer. There also have been numerous scientific papers that report the pro‑ nounced health threat secondhand smoke poses to pets. Some veterinarians have linked tobacco smoke to lung and nasal cancer in dogs, lung cancer in birds and oral cancer and lymphoma in cats. Indeed, according to a study by Colorado State University, pets that live with smokers have a higher risk of developing particular types of cancer, including twice the risk of developing lung cancer. Long-nosed canines, such as collies, may be susceptible to nasal cancers because carcinogens from cigarette smoke lodge in the large surface area of the nasal cavity and sinuses, says a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. However, short- and medium-nosed breeds are more susceptible to lung cancer because the nose doesn’t trap the carcinogens as easily, allowing them to quickly travel to the lungs, where they take root. Bird owners may already be familiar with avians’ susceptibility to respiratory illnesses from in-air contaminants. Birds’ respiratory systems are very sensitive to air pollutants, includ‑ ing cigarette smoke. Pets are also affected by something known as “third-hand smoke.” This is the residue that collects in areas where smokers frequent. It is found on interior surfaces of the home and even on people and pets themselves. Cats, which are notably self-groomers, tend to develop oral maladies because they are licking harmful chemicals, including third-hand smoke, from their bodies on a daily basis. Tufts College of Veterinary Medicine conducted a study that showed that the number of cats living with mouth cancer was higher for those living in homes with smokers than those cats living in smoke-free homes. There is also evidence that cats living with a smoker are twice as likely to develop malignant lymphoma. Third-hand smoke may also provoke skin allergies and irritation. When individuals think of smoking-related complications, they tend to think solely of fellow human beings. However, pets are susceptible to cancer as well, and secondhand smoke can be just as deadly to your four-legged friends as it can be to your family.

ISN’T CHIROPRACTIC JUST FOR BACK PAIN?

If you suffer from a health problem and are sick of the conventional approach that isn’t working, this could be the most eye-opening article you’ll ever read. Imagine for a moment that it’s 6 months from today ... You’re enjoying what you love to do ... playing golf, playing with the kids, or maybe just laying on a beach somewhere. You’re free of the pain and health issues that were holding you back. You have more energy, better health, and absolutely no pain. Does this sound too good to be true -- to live pain free, like you were in your younger years? My name is Dr. Derek Bell. I’ve used gentle chiropractic treatments to help thousands in our community feel better and live healthier, more productive lives. Regular chiropractic care, combined with a healthy lifestyle can produce an amazing state of health. Don’t you deserve to be healthy and happy? “Isn’t Chiropractic Just For Back Pain?” We can help conditions like ... • Headaches and Migraines • Asthma and Allergies • Numbness in the Arms and Legs • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome • Athletic Injuries • Car Accidents • Shoulder, Hip and Knee Pain • And much more There’s an endless list of health problems chiropractic can help with. For example, here’s what a recent study on chiropractic and high blood pressure found.

SCOTT M. BROWN ATTORNEY AT LAW

EXPERIENCED AND AFFORDABLE 9544 LAKESHORE RD., ANGOLA

“This procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood-pressure medications given in combination ... And it seems to be adverse-event free. We saw no side effects and no problems,” said study leader George Bakris, MD, director of the University of Chicago hypertension center. To find out if chiropractic can help you, I’m running a special offer. For 15 days only, $27 will get you all the services that could cost you $150 or more elsewhere! What does this offer include? Everything I normally do in my new patient evaluation. Take a look at what you will receive: • An in-depth consultation about your health where I will listen ... really listen. • A computerized spinal evaluation where we will begin to locate possible problem areas in your nervous system. • Any necessary spinal x-rays to look for misalignments, bad posture, and joint degeneration ... (NOTE: These would normally cost you at least $100). • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can map out your plan to better health. I’ll answer all your most probing questions about chiropractic and what it can do for you. The appointment will not take long at all, and you won’t be sitting in a waiting room all day either. My office is called Affordable Chiropractic Life Centers and is located at 7008 Erie Rd. in Derby (in the Chapel Villa complex). To take me up on this special offer, you must come in before November 23, 2012. Call us today at 947-4950.
