VILLAGE OF ANGOLA TO BREAK GROUND ON LIBRARY EXPANSION

After many years of planning and fundraising, the Village of Angola and the Angola Library Board will break ground on the Angola Library Expansion Project on Friday, July 27 - 11:00 a.m. at the library facility located at 34 North Main Street. The expansion will enhance the Angola Library’s ability to offer expanded educational and cultural opportunities, which had been hindered in the past due to space constraints. The expansion has been made possible, in part because of a recent grant award the Village obtained through the Erie County Consortium Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG). The Village will utilize these funds to construct a 33’ x 32.5’ (1,073 SF) expansion at the back of the existing library facility. The Village and the Library Board will be seeking additional funding to support the project through a New York State Library Construction due this fall. To cover the balance of the construction cost, the village board has authorized the sale of a one year ban-bond anticipation note in the amount of $135,000, The Village Board, at its regular meeting on Monday, July 9, 2012, awarded contracts to the lowest bidders including the following: General Construction - Picone Construction Company; Electrical - Goodwin Electric; Plumbing - MLB Plumbing; Mechanical Heating - Allied Mechanical Incorporated. The Village Board has supported the Library Expansion Project for several years. “In addition to educational enrichment, this project supports the Village Center Revitalization Plan to create a visually attractive downtown district and stimulate new activity and investment in the Village of Angola,” said retired educator, Deputy Mayor William G. Houston. In coordination with the groundbreaking, Erie County Legislator John Mills will host a Library Fundraiser selling lunch items (hot dogs, sausage, water and dessert) from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The library is also hosting a “Used Book Sale” from July 26 through July 28. Proceeds from both events will benefit the Angola Library expansion. “Although we are taking this momentous first step, the Village and Library Board need to continue to raise dedicated funds to help make this expansion a success, said Jack Kuebler, President of the Angola Library Board. “We understand the importance of the Library to our community and feel confident that the community will support this endeavor,” he said. __________

Make fruits fun for kids Many parents can attest to the challenges in encouraging children to eat healthily, including incorporating plenty of fruits and vegetables into their daily diets. Children tend to become picky eaters for a number of reasons, according to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. Some children are just naturally more sensitive to taste, texture and smell of some foods. Others may learn their picky eating from parents who pick and choose among their meals. Still other children learn to be selective through bribes and punishments around mealtime. However, there needn’t been fussing and feuding over food choices -- particularly produce -- when parents employ a few creative ideas to entice children to dig into healthy foods. 1. Ask for your child’s help: Have your child ride along to the grocery store and take an active role into picking out healthy foods that he or she may be willing to try. Most nutrition experts find that if children take in interest in what they will be eating, and are instrumental in making some choices, they will have a higher rate of eating those meals and foods. 2. Understand your child’s eating habits: Some children will eat the crown of broccoli but leave aside the stems. There are kids that will eat anything as long as it’s dunked in ketchup. They maye enjoy pears as long as they are cut up into pieces with the skin removed. Pay attention to how your child likes to eat the food and present it that way. It could mean fewer arguments at the dinner table. 3. Explore new flavor combinations: Oftentimes mixing certain flavor combinations can entice children to eat foods they may have never considered trying. Just think about the popularity of fruit juices mixed with vegetable purees. Some children have an inclination toward favorite flavors or just can benefit from a little variety, which can sometimes prove challenging when produce is out of season. Try Grapple(R) brand apples, which combine the fresh, familiar flavor of Washington apples with the aroma and taste of concord grapes. Through a patented process, premium Washington State apples are infused with grape flavor to create a product that “Crunches like an Apple, Tastes like a Grape(TM).” The health benefits of Grapples are just the same as other variety of apples, and there are no artificial ingredients added or genetic altering. The process of making them does not add any extra sugar, calories, carbohydrates or anything else; in fact the apple maintains its natural supply of vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and fiber. Parents can rest assured that all ingredients have been approved by the USDA

Grilling Dos and Don’ts The grilling season is in full swing for many. For others, it never ended at all. Some people equate grilling to an art form and profess to be ultimate grill masters. Whether you consider grilling to be a fullfledged sporting activity or just have a fancy in foods cooked over an open flame, you can benefit from information regarding dos and don’ts related to preparing and grilling foods. DO clean out the ash catcher beneath charcoal before lighting to allow proper air circulation from bottom vents. DON’T start the grill for the first time of the season without doing a thorough safety inspection. If using a gas grill, check for holes or leaks in gas hoses. DO preheat gas grills for approximately 10 minutes. Charcoal grills should be heated until the coals are 80 percent gray and ashy. DON’T place the grill too close to a house, garage or where any items can be ignited, such as by leaf piles or chemicals. DO keep children and pets away from the grill so that it isn’t bumped into or accidentally knocked over. DON’T use metal-handled utensils on the grill. They can transfer heat to the palm of your hand. Opt for wooden handles or use a flexible, heat-resistant glove. DO marinate meats to tenderize them. There is also evidence to support that marinades reduce the production of cancer-causing substances on meats that are grilled from fat in the meat and builtup drippings in the grill. DON’T press down on burgers or meats while they’re on the grill. This releases juices and could dry out the food. It also may cause flare-ups.

DO trim fat from meat before cooking. DON’T use a fork to turn over foods on the grill. Use tongs, which will not pierce the food and release the juices. DO put sweet basting items on the food during the last 10 to 15 minutes of cooking so they don’t char. DON’T thread foods on wooden skewers and cook without first soaking the skewers in water for 30 minutes. Otherwise the skewers could burn. DO brush the grill with vegetable oil to prevent food from sticking. DON’T leave the grill unattended. Food can flare up and burn quickly. Try to prepare as much of your meal in advance so that you can carefully watch the grill. DO try other meats and foods on the grill such as pork, lamb and fish. DON’T grill indoors or in an enclosed area devoid of proper ventilation.

In the summer, you’ll find us grilling away at the America’s Fair (formerly the Erie County Fair) and the Chautauqua County Fair. But remember, we can bring our tasty chicken and all the fixin’s right to your fundraiser, corporate event, or private party. “I ordered Weidner’s Chicken for a couple different picnics last summer and everyone raved about how good it was! It really was a hit and I appreciated the reasonable price and the friendly home delivery! I would recommend Weidner’s Chicken to anyone looking for a great barbequed chicken.” Diane P.

“My family and extended family cannot say enough great things about Weidner chicken. We thankfully stumbled upon them many years ago when planning a family gathering for which there was no time to cook, and have been ordering from them ever since. The convenience of having delicious, hot, and ready-to-serve chicken delivered when you need it, takes all of the hassle out of family gatherings, giving you more time to visit. Their chicken is so scrumptious, that we often order extra and freeze it for those days you don’t feel like cooking. The Weidner family customer service is excellent and all of our guests rave about their food – Bon Appetit!” Lisa W.

Easy Living The backyard barbecue adopts the laid-back spirit of summer, inviting guests to don their flip-flops, shorts and T-shirts while they enjoy a casual outdoor get-together with family and friends. That relaxing atmosphere makes the backyard barbecue a staple of many people’s summer social calendar. When hosting your next grillside gathering, consider the following suggestions to ensure it goes off without a hitch. • Consider charcoal grills for that smoky flavor. Proponents of gas grills and those of charcoal grills will argue until the end of time as to which option is better. In reality, each type of grill has its advantages and disadvantages. While propane grills are generally more convenient, they’re also more expensive. And though charcoal grills are less expensive, it does take longer to get food served with a charcoal grill. However, one advantage many charcoal grill supporters routinely reference is that extra smoky flavor charcoal grills provide. Gas grills have made strides in this area, but for grilling traditionalists, nothing provides more authentic flavor than cooking over charcoal. • Go over the guest list. Examining the guest list before the party is a good idea. This will ensure you have enough food for everyone and that the menu will meet the various needs of your guests. For instance, vegetarian guests don’t have to be restricted to salads. You can just as easily grill fish and even vegetables as you can burgers and hot dogs. For especially large gatherings, it might be a good idea to go with a propane gas grill. The fires never weaken or die down on a gas grill (so long as the propane tank is full) and heat is more evenly distributed over a gas grill, ensuring there are no dead spots on the grill. • Don’t “stick a fork in it.” Using a fork to flip foods on the grill is opening the floodgates for all those delicious juices to escape the food. Instead of using a fork, use tongs to flip steaks, chicken, burgers, and hot dogs. This keeps the flavor in and reduces the chances the meats will dry out while cooking over the flames. • Defrost foods ahead of time. Cold meat on a grill reduces the grill’s temperature while preventing juices from getting seared in. Defrost meats and poultry for at least an hour before they hit the grill. • Reserve the barbecue sauce for late in the game. Barbecue sauce adds lots of flavor to meats and poultry. However, applying barbecue sauce too early can cause burning. That’s because most barbecue sauces contain sugar, which burns when over an open flame. Apply barbecue sauce later, when food is nearly cooked. Also, when choosing a marinade, look for one that does not contain much sugar.

Food safety is important when entertaining Entertaining at home is one of the ways friends and families spend time together, and food is often at the center of such gatherings, acting as a conversation starter or even the central component of the festivities. But food can also make your gathering memorable for all the wrong reasons. Forty-eight million people get sick from contaminated food each year, according to the National Institutes of Health. Statistics Canada says that roughly 13 million Canadians succumb to some sort of food illness each year. Common causes of food-borne illnesses are bacteria, parasites and viruses present in improperly handled food. Some foods also contain contaminants that result from the growing or packaging process. Salmonella-laced spinach and cantaloupe, pink-slime beef and scores of other food-related concerns pop up every year. However, keeping guests and yourself healthy requires knowledge of some basic food safety rules that are important throughout the year. * Wash your hands thoroughly before handling any type of food. * Avoid cross-contamination of foods by using utensils for only one type of food (e.g., separate cutting board and knives for meat and produce). * Cook foods to proper internal temperatures. * Keep foods thoroughly chilled to prevent bacteria growth. Do not overstuff a refrigerator, or it may not be able to retain a cold enough temperature necessary to inhibit growth of microorganisms. * Store raw meats on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator so they don’t accidently leak or drip onto other foods. * Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold during serving. Use chafing dishes or bowls or bins of ice if necessary. * Discard any leftover food that has been sitting out if it hasn’t been placed in a container and refrigerated or frozen within two hours. If it’s especially hot outside, discard after one hour. * Keep foods covered when serving outdoors. Insects, notably flies, carry harmful bacteria, which can be transferred to food from saliva or body contact. * Thaw foods in the refrigerator, not on the counter. * Sanitize kitchen surfaces with bleach and water to kill any residual bacteria from food preparation. * Do not use meat, poultry or seafood marinades again to baste cooking foods. * Regularly clean out the refrigerator and wash down the bins and trays. * Wash all fruits and vegetables prior to cooking. Fleshy fruits can become contaminated simply from a knife coming in contact with the rind and then the fruit pulp. * Be extra careful with known food-borne illness suspects. These include eggs, ground meats, seafood, and poultry. Safety precautions when preparing and storing food can safeguard hosts and their guests from food-borne illnesses.

Campside Treat Gets Revamped S’mores is one of the most popular desserts enjoyed around the campfire and at cookouts. Now you can enjoy the flavor of this delectable dessert without the fuss of toasting marshmallows over an open flame. S’mores history dates back to the early 20th century. While the actual recipe origin is unknown -- considering most camping recipes were passed down from generation to generation --the first printed recipe for s’mores appeared in 1927 in the Girl Scout Handbook. S’mores were popular campside treats because of the portability of ingredients. It was easy to pack a bag of marshmallows, a box of graham crackers and a few bars of chocolate. The combination of sticky marshmallow, smooth, rich chocolate and crunchy graham crackers provides a perfect melding of flavors. However, s’mores weren’t the first pairing of these ingredients. Mallomar cookies and Moonpies also featured these ideal components. To make a delicious dessert that builds upon the s’mores flavors and theme at your next summertime event, try this recipe for Frozen S’mores Cake.

Frozen S’mores Cake 1 1 10 1/4 1/2 1 1 2

quart vanilla ice cream quart chocolate ice cream or 12 graham cracker squares cup melted butter tablespoon sugar jar of hot fudge bag mini-marshmallows tablespoons water Vegetable shortening

Crush graham crackers in a zipper-lock bag or pulse in a food processor until made into crumbs. Add sugar and melted butter to the crumbs, mix and press into the bottom of a spring-form pan. Bake at 350 F for 10 minutes, or until the crust browns a bit. Soften ice cream by letting it sit out of the freezer for a few minutes. Use a spatula or spoon to spread the chocolate ice cream over the cooled graham cracker crust. Spread desired amount of fudge topping over the chocolate ice cream. Then spread the softened vanilla ice cream over the fudge layer.

Coat a microwave-safe bowl with a thin layer of shortening. Add most of the marshmallows, reserving a few for garnish, and the water to the bowl. Microwave for about a minute to a minute and a half until the marshmallows are melted. Top the vanilla ice cream with the melted marshmallows. Place the cake in the freezer overnight to harden. When ready to serve, place the garnish marshmallows on top and drizzle with a little melted hot fudge. You can use a kitchen torch or a barbecue lighter to add a little browning to the garnish marshmallows to make them look like they were toasted over a fire. Slice and enjoy quickly before it melts. This cake also makes a great alternative to a store-bought ice cream birthday cake.

In addition to headliners Hit N Run, who take the stage from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m., performers on the Main Stage will be the Steam Donkeys, noon to 2 p.m.; the Afterburners, 2:30 to 4:30 and Yvonne Schmidt, 5 to 7 p.m. Burgerfest is located along Main and Buffalo Streets and in the Village of Hamburg Municipal Parking Lot. The Taste of Hamburg portion of the festival features the favorite offerings of local restaurants, in the parking lot and along Main and Buffalo streets. The one-day festival has something for everyone, from Kidspace children’s inflatable rides and activities; an arts and crafts show and sale, the Rotary Classic Car Show, the LaBatt Beer Tent, a burger-eating contest and the Fourth Annual Hamburg Film Festival at the Palace Theatre. The car show, music with Rock N Roll to the Rescue, the bed race, burger-eating contest, and children’s entertainment will all be situated on Main Street. Kidspace will be located in the parking lot. The Town of Hamburg Bicentennial Committee is planning some fun events at Burgerfest this year as th the town celebrates its 200 birthday. Planned are the crowning of a centennial king and queen and winner of a beard-growing contest. Burgerfest celebrates the birth of the hamburger at the Hamburg Fair in 1885 and is hosted by the Rotary Club of Hamburg, the Hamburg Rotary Sunrise Club, the Kiwanis Club and the Lions Club. Hamburg held its first Burgerfest in 1985 to mark the100th anniversary of the birth of the hamburger after organizers discovered a history book detailing the burger’s origins. Frank and Charles Menches, vendors who traveled the world’s fair circuit, and who have been credited with also creating Cracker Jacks and ice cream cones, concocted the allAmerican burger. Descendants of the Menches brothers from Ohio, who remain in the food industry three generations later, have traveled to Hamburg to participate in several Burgerfest celebrations over the years, bringing along the secret recipe. This year, local restaurants will have no Menches competiton as they vie for the title of best hamburger, as local grillers Imagine Hamburg will not participate. Legend has it that the Menches brothers ran out of their usual pork sausage that hot, fateful day at the fair and turned to local butchers to replenish their supplies. When no pork was available, a butcher suggested ground beef. The Menches brothers purchased the beef, but added secret ingredients, including coffee grounds to create a unique flavor. The hamburger was born! Vendors interested in participating in the Taste of Hamburg or in having a booth at the festival should contact Kiwanians Sue Ganey at 627-9694, or Alan Adema at 861-8016, or e-mail them at burgerfest2012@ aol.com . To register for the Rotary Club Classic Car Show, call Rotarian Dave Woolley at 998-2403, or e-mail him at daw@lawoolley.com . Pairing wine with dessert

Many people are novices when it comes to choosing the right wine to pair with food, and the same can be said when wine carries over into the dessert hour. Dessert is an expansive term for many different culinary creations, so finding the right wine to go with your dessert is not always easy. Here are some suggestions, courtesy of The Nibble, a specialty food magazine. * Apple pie or tartlets: Anjou wines, like Bonnezaux * Cheesecake: Champagne or rick wines, like Sauternes * Chocolate: Late harvest Zinfandel or vintage port * Coconut custard pie: A Beerenauslese Riesling * Cookies: Whatever is the best you have on hand * Fresh fruit: Moscato D’Asti * Pudding or mousse: Fortified Muscats * Tiramisu: Sweet Malvasia or Champagne
