PLM plans to offer senior high school, awaits approval by Jerica Veron Telesforo

The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) planned to offer senior high school next year as the country transitions into K-12 program of the education department, a move that avoid the possible dislocation of some the university’s faculty. The university is preparing to welcome around 1,000 from Manila’s secondary schools for the senior high program under the K-12, which will start in the school year 2016-2017. The university has already submitted its senior high school program to Commission on Higher Education, Dr. Cecilia J. Sabio, vice president for academic affairs, said.

To date, we await updates from the Department of Education as to the tracks we are allowed to offer, as well as other relevant details. Sabio told Ang Pamantasan in a written interview.

She said the university has been preparing for the K-12 program from 2013. Sabio said PLM had formed a committee to study the feasibility of offering senior

high school (SHS), which made a favorable recommendation to top management to proceed with the plan, taking into consideration the existing university resources, including manpower and facilities. The PLM administration was also in close coordination with both CHEd and DepEd to ensure the university’s senior high school program will be consistent with government’s minimum requirements. Sabio said the senior high school program will avoid dislocating faculty members teaching general education subjects because students enrolling in grades 11 and 12 under the senior high school program will be taking the same subjects. Current PLM students, who will shift courses or will take general education subjects next academic year can also enroll in the senior high school program, Sabio said. “Should some students shift courses in PLM, they shall be accommodated as usual, that is, for as long as doing so does not run counter any university policy,” she added. Sabio said PLM was strictly following the CHEd and DepEd protocols and awaiting approval from these agencies before announcing publicly that it will open senior high school program, unlike other universities which has been promoting their K-12 program.

PLM to adopt e-ID System

Heto ‘yung matagal ko nang inaasikaso which is the automation of the PLM ID or the scholar’s e-card which is ‘yung pinangako ko ‘nung tumakbo ako kasi ayaw ko namang matapos ‘yung term na hindi siya nagagawa. SSC President Enrique Adolfo “Boogie” San Juan told AP.

The Supreme Student Council of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila will introduce an ambitious 300,000-peso electronic identification system (eID) project next year, the first time in the university’s 50 year history, to increase safety and security in the campus. Enrique Adolfo “Boogie” San Juan, SSC president, said the council has been working close with the College of Engineering and Technology (CET)Computer Science program to roll out the ID system project, the biggest-ever automated project by the student council, before the end of the school term in 2016, “Heto ‘yung matagal ko nang inaasikaso which is the automation of the PLM ID or the scholar’s e-card which is ‘yung pinangako ko ‘nung tumakbo ako kasi ayaw ko namang matapos ‘yung term na hindi siya nagagawa” San Juan told AP. San Juan said the bulk of the 300,000-peso budget, which will be sourced from SSC funds, will be used to

acquire equipment and machines that can produce about 9,000 e-cards for PLM students “Nai-less na doon yung mga computers kasi nakapagpadonate tayo from BSP ng ten computer units,” he said, “Whole set siya. Pero as of now, wala pa kasi siya sa PLM so kanina, nagsend na ako ng letter para mapush through yung e-card na mag-allocate muna tayo ng dalawang computers para dun sa mga programmers para matapos.” CET secretary Denise Talamayan is supervising the design and production of the e-ID cards. “We have a student programmer. Nakagawa na sila ng system together with her classmates. Actually, tinutulungan siya nung mga classmate nya.” San Juan added. When completed, the eID will prevent non-PLM students from gaining access to the campus and will avoid trouble and other security problems, San Juan said.

had a dry run of the CRS, testing the procedures for students from the College of Engineering and Technology, during the second semester enrolment for school year 2015-2016 Nathalie Diong, a freshman BS English student, said she favored the integration of the CRS in PLM enrolment procedures because it will lessen the work of the administration, making it much easier to access university records, an indication that “we’re already one step closer to being more advance”. But, Rose Contrano, a BS Physical Therapy student, was skeptical. She doubted if the CRS will work in the university because the students were not properly oriented about the new procedures and system, which she said can be problematic.

It is all good but the PLMayers are not well

IN SPEAKING, PEOPLE CAN KNOW WHAT KIND OF PERSON WE ARE. IN WRITING, WE CAN VOICE OUT THE INNER THOUGHTS IN OUR SOUL.

PLM to upgrade enrolment with CRS All students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila will soon enjoy a faster, more efficient and more convenient enrolment procedure after Manila’s chartered university signed an agreement with the University of the Philippines, adopting its computerized registration system (CRS). Under the memorandum of agreement, signed in September by PLM President Ma. Leonora V. de Jesus, UP President Alfredo E. Pascual and Manila City Mayor Joseph Estrada, the country’s premier state university allowed PLM to use its computer-aided system to gather personal information, including academic records, like grades and subjects that students have already taken. The agreement was part of UP’s efforts to assist public universities in upgrading their administrative system. The new enrolment procedure is expected to more efficient and convenient for about 9,000 students in the university. The PLM administration already

informed and guided so about this, thus for me, it’s just another adjustment for the students and for the administration. Contrano said.

In the University of the Philippines, where the CRS was used, students have varying opinions about it on whether it will be beneficial to the PLM. Ginger Canlas, BS Psychology student from University of the Philippines Diliman, said the CRS will be helpful, especially on updating students regarding their grades and tuition fees. However, she said UP students in Diliman had encountered problems on CRS on checking the availability of subjects, which is not a problem in PLM. “It is helpful and convenient, lalo na sa grades,” Canlas said. “Pati updating ng info TURN TO 5

the reconstruction of the university’s Gusaling Antonio Villegas due to the Intramuros Administration’s policy prohibiting the construction of buildings in the Old Walled city of Manila beyond two-storeys, preserving the area’s historical and cultural heritage. The Walled City with its numerous Roman Catholic churches and ruined monasteries was established by the Spanish colonial government in the late 16th century and the Intramuros Administration has been restoring the historical sites. But, the Manila City Hall has been negotiating with the Intramuros Administration to allow the city government to build a threestorey school building, replacing an old structure, which was demolished because it was no longer structurally safe after about 50 years.

vice president for administration, said the city government has appropriated about 250 million pesos to rebuild the left and right wings of the Gusaling Antonio Villegas, the university’s old main building. The construction funds are still in the city government pending approval of its plans by the Intramuros Administration. Until the city hall and the Intramuros Administration reached a deal, Juson said the university cannot proceed with the construction, but expects the issue to be resolved soon. Construction would take about four months once the plans are approved. Juson said the university has plans to retrofit the Gusaling Jose Atienza and the right wing of Gusaling Antonio Villegas due to some structural problems. what’s your description of an ideal President for the upcoming 2016 Philippine Elections?

Even though Philippines is a country that seems to be a vision of a never ending sufferings, I still believe that there is hope that every Filipinos’ should see and live with [sic]. Sec. Mar Roxas will be my bet on this upcoming election having the same path with PNoy who shows an outstanding performance on his administration. For me, an ideal president is an individual who can prove that the Filipino culture and identity should not be compromised in pursuit of national progress; a president who has the capacity to awaken the national consciousness of the people; a president who has the power to unite all Filipinos despite variations in dialect, religion, gender, and belief; and a president who is neutral and non-partisan to ensure equity in all his rendered services.

he Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila abolished three colleges and merged them to create a leaner organization in preparation for the integration of Southeast Asian nations by the end of the year, assuring the move will not result in dislocation of faculty and non-teaching staff but in more efficiency, the Vice President of Academic Affairs said in a written interview. Dr. Cecilia J. Sabio told Ang Pamantasan the merger, which took effect in June during the current school year, 2015-2016, was also in compliance with the minimum standards of the Commission on higher Education (CHED) as well as in consistent with the university’s vision and mission statement, which is to be

Education is among the institutions to be integrated, particularly in the field of architecture, engineering, medical and dental and legal profession. The merging of colleges created some confusion in the beginning, but the decision to abolish three colleges, including the College of Mass Communications, was a collective decision reached after a faculty development workshop in April, Dr. Sabio said.. “With the objective to achieve

PATHRICK FERNANDEZ PATRICK FERNANDEZ The City Lights

EDITORIAL

The existence of an independent and reliable student council and publication is a must for educational institutions to maintain balance between the students and administration. Both the Supreme Student Council (SSC) and the Ang Pamantasan (AP) merit the ideals of this institution: the former acting as representatives of the student body, the latter acting as a seamless medium where communication is extracted and facilitated. Both AP and SSC contribute gargantuan efforts, often exceeding the grid of student responsibilities, just to fulfil these ideals. First semester of academic year 2015-2016 came and some changes took place without ample proviso. Suddenly the Official Student Publication of this University wasn’t the once facilitating the collection for the AP Fee anymore, a concept which violates a B.O.R. Resolution stating that AP is fiscally autonomous, meaning the collection of funds for the student publication shall be carried out by the publication itself. No form of official notification was sent to the publication about this particular change. It is a must that the SSC and AP, as universitywide organizations, exercise fiscal autonomy to assure the impartial service to the stakeholders of this university and the administration. The concept of non-autonomy foreshadows an implication of external control, which may affect these organizations’ performance as representatives of the students in voicing out their concerns to the administration. Since the administration is in possession of the collected fees that will be used by these organizations as their fund in service to the students, there arises a possibility of interference and meddling, in all forms and degrees, a concept both terrifying and legitimately hampering free speech and exercise. What if programs and services by both organizations are disapproved by those who hold the funds? Tweaked? Discouraged? Antagonized? Left bereft of execution? That the SSC and AP will kowtow to the “lender” in order to function seems archaic and counter-productive to meet the needs of this institution’s ideals. If that happens, the students may be deprived of enjoying their right to holistically develop themselves to be more efficient and informed individuals. The action, if by the skin of its teeth a welcome decision, was still very arbitrary and quick. no form of consultation with both the SSC and AP was carried out from the administration. If their intention was to centralize the collection of fees and minimize systematic lag that the students’ undergo every enrolment period, a simple ‘talk’ with the SSC and the Interim

Editorial Board would lessen the panhandling both went through, trying to investigate what happened. But by choosing not to discuss such a significant action with these organizations, the administration either saw no boundaries or simply walked over the line, moving forward without a hiccup. If this process continues, with the administration collecting fees for both SSC and AP, an agreeable compromise expects the administration to transfer the funds to the respective accounts, with transparent dossiers of a just and honourable auditing process. Through this, no delay for both organizations can ensue. Projects and services can be green-lit immediately, with fewer strings. As of writing, the SSC has received an amount of P320,000 last semester for the May 2015 enrolment and is still expecting at least P130,000 from the late enrolment period last semester, which is still under the possession of the administration. On the other hand, AP has not received any amount collected for the whole academic year 2015-2016, or two enrolment periods for the two semesters this year. Both the SSC and Ang Pamantasan exist in service of the students. But how are they supposed to continue serving the university if at the beginning of every academic year their policies are bypassed and threatened by administrative influence? There are two steps to meet the interest of both parties on this issue. First, the administration must contextualize the actions committed regarding the decision to collect SSC and AP fees without consultation from both organizations. Second, both organizations and the administration must personally and formally verbalize a procedure, a policy, a system, a resolution if there ever was one—in relation to the funds and its immediate release to the organizations to prevent delays in services intended for the students. Unless the first step is done, the students’ welfare and interest is still in jeopardy despite the fact that the SSC have received partial amount of their supposed fund. The students call for the administration’s clarification regarding the matter, in order to iron out missteps, to discuss what falls in the legal spectrum, to settle and neutralize the afflictions, despite the threatening nature of these remedies. But these things are negotiable, for lack of a better word. What’s non-negotiable is the administration failing to see the collateral damage, failing to see the butterfly effect of abrasive decisions, failing to see how much we deserve as stakeholders of this university

“WE MUST GIVE THOSE InnOCEnT PEOPLE FULL AnD DETAILED nARRATIVE OF WHAT IS HAPPEnInG, REGARDLESS OF OUR SOCIOPOLITICAL IDEALISM.

Lost Stars “Imagine the earth--”my friend once said. “You and I are just a speck of dust on the earth, and we’re not even supposed to be here.” Surprisingly, these words calmed me down and ceased my anxieties. I guess one wouldn’t really understand what depression is until it hits you in the face one day and sucks all the life out of you. I believe that the only people who can have a say about depression are those who actually felt it and have studied it, so do I get a say in this? Yes. People are like stars, we all burn brightly and eventually die out. Stars run on hydrogen fuel and when helium is fused with it, it burns and produces heat and light which causes a star to contract, become smaller and hotter and eventually, this causes the layers of the stars to expand until it becomes a red giant. Once the Helium is all used up the core starts to cool down and it produces a white and black dwarf. Huge stars have so much mass that after all the Helium is used up, it still has enough carbon to fuse into heavy elements like carbon and turn into iron. When the core turns to iron, it no longer burns and the star’s gravity causes it to collapse and then it explodes into a supernova. Then whatever’s left of the core can form into a neutron star or a black hole. In the recent loss of a fellow PLMayer Alfred G. Cardeña, also an incoming staff of Ang Pamantasan supposedly, more people have opened up that they share the same sentiments with Alfred: suicide. I

asked my psychology professors whether or not if Ang Pamantasan should release a special issue newspaper for the death of Alfred, the answer? no. Priming is an implicit memory effect in which exposure to stimulus influences response to a later stimulus; doing so would therefore prime students in doing the same thing. I also asked myself, how would I feel if I were friends with Alfred and the student publication released a special issue for him, would I be happy? My honest to goodness opinion: no. Imagine, a whole newspaper dedicated to your friend, it feels like an exploitation of what he was and people would suddenly act and speak as if their souls were once connected. I do not wish to speak ill of Alfred, but I think that what Alfred did was selfish. Yes, you read that correctly, suicide is selfish. You leave the people who love you behind, moreover, you rob yourself of the youth you’re supposed to have. Sometimes we lose sight of the things that are truly important and we give into things that make us feel bad and it’s okay. We are humans, that’s what makes us human. You either chose to become a neutron star, an ancient remnants of stars that have reached the end of their evolutionary journey through space and time or a black hole, a region of space where matter has collapsed in on itself.

Audience or Critic Stupid, ignorant, and fool. These are the words I would use to describe a person who belongs to the type of people who would go out on social networking sites merely just to rant and express their biased and subjective and mostly impulsive opinions. I understand that every one of us has the right to freely express themselves, most especially their opinion, openly to the public. However, the things we say have an ultimate limitation when it comes to socio-political concerns and that is, “it has to be objective”. Socio-political issues are very critical concerns in our society, that we do not want to cause a chain of effects that would only confuse the public and jeopardize the status quo. Wrong Call

Have we, for once, thought of the outcome it may cause before we take an action? Surely yes but definitely most of the time we don’t. Have we, for once, thought of the words we are going to say before we spit it out? Ideally we should, but by practice we don’t. For these two, we become stupid. Similarly, when we use the social networking sites as our platform to voice out our concern, most of the time we address the wrong people. Likewise, when we look for answers outside of it, still we go straight to the wrong people. And that is a concrete example of us being too stupid – taking actions out of impulse and forsaking the need to think of its purpose, the process it has to undergo, and the ends it will reach. If we really wish to change and make the status quo better, we must think as an educated man would do. We will ask to gather information and verify every fact set on the table. Just like when we do researches, we become keen observant. We also identify the problem, form a hypothesis, gather data and information, analyze and interpret, then come up to a solid conclusion. After that we take appropriate actions to solve the problem. It would take a lot of effort but we must do it systematically and not drastically. Action-Reaction

Moreover, we must put everything in consideration. We do not ignore one single data, as long as it would affect our concern in any way possible. All information is vital to make our society better. Most of the time, when we realize that something is wrong we tend to focus on just solving the problem not knowing that, at times, when we force a solution other things are affected in an opposite way. We are, habitually, being ignorant of the bigger picture, letting our emotions flow just like a running water – harsh and uncontainable. In social networking sites, everything is offered to everyone, regardless of age, sex, affiliation, or thinking. When we use social networking sites to express our dismay on the situation, we ignore the fact that we are exposed to a wide audience. Some may say that it is the purpose – to let other people be aware of the problem. However, letting them know of the problem is not really helping at all, primarily because the way we do it is completely biased in a

way that we give them false and/or incomplete details. Since, the solution we will take remains useless when it will only cause another problem, we should start learning how to put everything into the equation, so as to come up with the most effective and efficient answer to our problem. I, therefore, suggest that if we really would want to use the social networking sites to make it a viable venue of empowering social awareness let us not focus on just one side of the story. We must give those innocent people full and detailed narrative of what is happening, regardless of our socio-political idealism. Fifteen minutes of fame

Lastly, I think that most people, who go to social networking sites, ranting on everything, merely want attention like buffoons who do funny, idiotic stuff. They go on spitting out words that are, at times, pointless and/or inconsistent defeating the purpose of their endeavor. In addition, there are these people who are very much fond of the bandwagon concept. They say things that are very unnecessary even though they do not understand the situation, just to look smart and concerned. A piece of advice for these people, if we do not know anything about a certain topic, or if we know a little of it, let’s keep our mouth shut. We do not want to confuse others by giving them vague information. knowing a thing or two about an issue, doesn’t give justice to what are we saying most especially when we only say things that malign other people. The key to making this society a better place is not through social networking sites. Though social media exists, still it has a lot of furnishing to undergo before it completely accomplishes its goal. The drawbacks actually behind social media are its audience and credibility. The fact that it is easy to change vital details in social networking sites where social media originated makes news reporting doubtful. However, that is not the point of this article. What this article wants to implore among the readers is that we must start being mindful of our social networking activity. Let us educate ourselves to be more critical in dealing socio-political issues. If only we could practice gathering sufficient and verifying relevant details, that would not forsake other necessary aspects outside of an issue, then we would not be considered stupid, ignorant, and won’t make a fool out of ourselves. We won’t be one of those people who sit on the bleachers watching a series of events concerning socio-political problems. Instead, we could make a relevant point on the matter concerned and therefore be the critic of our society and one of the contributorsin making the change we dream, ever since, possible.

On the Eyes of the Society Intelligence is something desired by every individual. Something that is innate in every person but we always seek for it. Something that is very powerful that when the society considers you an intelligent person, you are on their track of best people. Intelligent people are always looked upon and respected. It’s nice to be one of them but how can we be considered intelligent? Let me tell you a story of a girl I used to know. This girl speaks her own thoughts. She loves to talk about herself, chat with her friends during spare time and converse a lot when someone speaks to her. She is one of the students who excels in her class. Once the professor spits a question out, her hand is always the first one raised in the air. She wants to be a lawyer. She is intelligent. Little did she know that there are deafening whispers and giggles on her back; that for every grammatically incorrect construction of her sentences, she is being laughed at. This girl has difficulty correcting her grammar. no one dares to tell her what’s wrong.Everyone thinks that she lacks intelligence, yet no one tells her what is it that needs to be right. For most people, this girl is stupid for continuously speaking with her grammatically incorrect sentences. A girl who didn’t reach the line of what the society thinks of what intelligence is. In speaking, people can know what kind of person we are. In writing, we can voice out the inner thoughts in our soul. Being good on these two ways of communication, we can be intelligent. But as on how the society defines intelligence, we can’t be one. With the wrong tenses, verb agreements, and syntax errors, we can’t reach the right measurement of intelligence set by the society. As a writer, I define writing as voicing out what I want to say, what stories I want to share with my readers and what thoughts I want to shout using my quill. Writing while

being mindful of my own use of words is a must for me. What kind of reader will believe a news article with bad grammars. How can a writer be credible if her construction of words is not accepted by the standards of language? no matter how accurate the article is, the readers won’t believe the writer if she is grammatically falsified. Admit it or not, a wrong use of words and construction of sentences may affect the factuality of a writer’s work. I’ll bet if you see a newspaper article having a wrong grammar within the sentences, you’ll think the writer is stupid. Maybe grammar is just a word. A word that can be defined as a set of rules that explains how words are used in a language and a word that defines the person through the eyes of the society. Is it how we’re going to measure what intelligence is? Through rouge apostrophes and bizarre spelling? According to David Ogilvy, “I don’t know the rules of grammar. If you’re trying to persuade people to do something, or buy something, it seems to me you should use their language, the language they use every day, the language in which they think, we try to write in the vernacular.” Intelligence will always take part on grammar. Language is a thing we continuously learn. It is taught to us and it is always be a part of our lives. We can’t please the society to consider us to be intelligent. We can’t command them the right way on measuring intellect. Maybe grammar won’t define the intelligence of a person, but how the society sees it is inevitable. The girl I used to know may not be intelligent on the eyes of others but this girl can’t be stop on being her best self. Her bad grammar won’t inhibit her on her grip on believing that someday she will be a lawyer because she is intelligent. This girl is intelligent.

Opinion No. 3 I couldn’t make it to 50,000 words for the national novel Writing Month in november, only 1,834. Had it been finished, I’d have a novel-a semi-dystopian critique on mutants that didn’t want to be heroes, with an undercurrent of the glib, teenage youth-inrevolt commentary I write about with ease. It’s my fault it can’t exist. Had I spent less time bothering with cause and effect relationships as the reasoning behind my failure at every step to commit to writing diligently, I would have understood that I was impaled and left destitute by my lack of self-respect. Realizing I lack self-respect begins ordinarily like a virus intrudes--unknowable and unaware, continuously turning its resident acute of its fanfare, that one surmises one day that that what was standard routine living before, now looks toxically quotidian in that it makes attempts for curiosity abrasive. Like realizing an open wound rented a patch of skin after a vague and passing incident; finding scabs on cuts that didn’t even hurt. It’s subtle and hits you smack in the face, no recoiling. Then we enter a familiar terrain of hopeless and constant configuration to see where others who have similar goals have reached. How far along in the race have they furthered? How left behind oneself is? Self-respect bothers to wake you up in the morning and convince you to do good work, or possibly the best work by far. It convinces you to generate passion for paintings, essays, cash flow audits, and oiling gears or machinery. Having self respect delegates all of these from responsibilities to intuitive activities that feel essential. Selfrespect earns that privilege of getting to work but never having to. I often wake wake every morning assisting myself with bruises from

yesterday’s slip and faux pas. it doesn’t build character, direction and torque. It’ll bite you in the ass one day, when you have no ammunition to convince yourself that you don’t hate what you’ve become. You try to feel absolute, upon which even more hatred of the self comes quickly as an aftertaste. Only self-respect, the uncongested notion of self-worth delivered in packets of hard work, empathy, and constant feeding of curiosity, will the doubts recede. I became lazy. Lazy was all I could afford. It was the easy and cheap thing from the roster of great decisions in proximity. I didn’t respect the craft and the process, and the simple efforts that made likelihood take one step further. I didn’t appreciate the currency and the exchange. I didn’t respect myself enough to believe it was feasible, neglecting the magic in the attempt. I looked down on myself, miming myself instructions, to fail. Perhaps these examples are too esoteric and pretentious that it can’t possibly mean anything more than peppered fangs of the pseudo-Beatnik subculture, night shift writers, or to you I sound like an ailing and spoiled millennial. Perhaps I’m pretending to be wounded. In the cusp of the culture that seeks to affirm itself through knowing a whole arena of facts about life; self-respect is hard to come by. Self-respect denotes attention to detail-a keen particularity for things. You can make the regal mundane, you can contribute to the ridicule instead of the interesting. Self-respect isn’t extracted through pampering our weaknesses, packaging and augmenting our lies. It won’t allow you to jerry-rig a personality; much less will it allow you to generate slapdash work. It sees you in this dimmed light to let you know you’re going to need another bulb.

Heads Up High My inferiority has already affected me in so many ways, I’ve been stepped on, mocked, and picked on. I have been through so much because of a particular part of person, the heartaches and disappointments are sometimes too hot to handle. What I’m talking about is the kind of person that humiliates, disrespects, and mistreats people like me. never again will I be a victim of people like you. All my life I’ve been hearing these absurd stories about teachers humiliating students, cops scaring their prisoners, bosses belittling their employees. Things that should not be happening are happening. I’ve never even realized that I wanted this to change until I experienced it firsthand. The way this person looked at me, I felt so small, like no good can ever come out of me. This person made me feel like a wimp that will fall flat on her face when she runs. It hurts, yes but I won’t let anyone do that to me again. Learn how to speak up, let the entire world know that you’re not a push-over anymore. That you and I will no longer tolerate how people dictate you as of you are a headless chicken. Let your voice be heard so that everyone will know that you have a tongue and it’s functioning! Prove that you are no one’s puppet. That you can talk the talk and walk the walk. Everyone will need a confidence boost every now and then, there’s nothing wrong with it but a thing no one should do is a power trip. Abusing your name or title may get you known but I won’t guarantee that it will give you a better name. From this day no one should let anyone bully, demean, humiliate, and do any form of misconduct to him/her. no one can make themselves feel substandard without them knowing it. When you know that you are being degraded, YOU should take action. I took action by following my gut feeling, by guiding my own way because I know that only I can lay the path to better living. Doing the same thing will make everybody mentally healthy. Hating everyone and being mean is not a

good lifestyle, your head is always firing, your moods are constantly swinging, and your friends (if you’ll have any) will avoid you becomes of that dark aura you exude. Both sides are horrible stories to tell. The ones who are being stepped on are pitiful but the ones who are stepping on them may have greater problems that none can understand. So those who know that they are being stepped on, speak up because knowing them better will help you and them. Here’s a quote that I think will help you understand more: “I do not think, sir, you have any right to command me, merely because you are older than I, or because you have seen more of the world than I have; your claim to superiority depends on the use you have made of your time and experience.” - Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre As the quote implies, you have a choice, say no to how others demean others. You can make your own rules; you can do things your own way just keep your head up high and your feet on the ground. You’ll be fine.

ANG PAMANTASAN / DECEMBER 2015

by Jewel Sumayang

The doctor told me not to laugh vigorously and feel harsh emotions because of my terminal disease. My days are countable. I might die anytime soon. The doctor told me to stay in the hospital. But nothing will happen if I stay there. I prayed to at least experience a life. I left the hospital. I decided to go to school and study. My classmates kept picking on me because I seem cold as ice. I cannot defend myself. But there’s this girl who kept glancing at me. She’s Sophia. I caught her staring at me so I looked at her comely eyes, and smiled. I saw her lips curve. While I was walking through the hallway the next day, I saw her weeping. She told me that the campus heartthrob, Cole, ignored her. We did not want to rake over the ashes. I simply asked her how she defines happiness. “It’s when you still choose the person or thing you love the most no matter what,” she said. We even talked about life, dove into deeper shore. Days passed, every time I was picked on, she stood up for me. We talked about things every day. Indeed, she is as sweet as the solemn sounds of golden harps. One time, I told Sophia that I couldn’t make it to the upcoming prom. She became sad and seemed to sink amidst a sea of perplexity. During their cheerleading competition, she gave me a hug. I winked at her and she grinned back. She is so beautiful despite being tired. The way she gracefully moves, makes me shiver. After the competition, a bunch of cool guys including Cole chased after her. I should not feel mad, right? After the competition, she told me that she was taken aback because Cole asked her out for the prom night. I felt jealous. While I was walking her home, she grasped my hand all of a sudden. I was tingling. Then we vowed to be with each other’s side no matter what. Everytime I’m with her, I feel like I’m in cloud nine. She asked me about my frequent absences. I told her that everything’s alright.

We always talk about things, have late night talks till dawn. One night, we decided to meet at the park. She wanted to tell me something. She told me that she had developed feelings for me, shivering throughout the confession. My heart seemed to run a 10-kilometer race. I saw her patiently waiting for my response, I stuttered. I told her that I feel the same thing. With her, my happiness is in perpetuity. While walking through the hallway one afternoon, Cole approached me with clenched fists. He wanted me to back off, telling me I was too daft for Sophia.

Wrong Station by Jonjielynn Ramos

Every sunrise creeps me out, reminding me the years I yearned for him. I don’t know what makes me stay, what beauty I behold on watching the rusting rails, what sweet composition I hear from deafening drone of this rail transport; what makes the arrival of trains, with 20 minutes in intervals, a blockbuster hit for me. On this railroad I sit, waiting for him to pass by. I look at the lines of my palsied hand. Each detail on my palm envisions how it feels like to be held by you. I want our hands to intertwine as if they are destined for each other. As if they’re a vision of eternal relish. A beautiful apparition that is uncertain of its outcome--an imagination of impossibility. Waiting is not as easy as drinking water. I drown, waiting. I drown on this fluid, submerging me to the reality that he will never love me back. I drown, because I am not supposed to drink this water of stupidity. I am stupid for hoping that

Unoccupied She wasn’t ready. It was her first time leaving the country. It kind of sounds easy when you’re not a 69-year old semi-obese woman with rheumatism and poor eyesight. And of course the nauseating fear of heights. Well, family is family. After almost 38 years of being an attorney it’s time to retire. “Do I really have to go there?”I said through the telephone while taking down some notes on the back of an old grocery receipt. “I mean son, moving is like a nightmare for me now,” she starts.“I only sit and type in my office. Can’t you at least get Nolan to accompany me?” I was really starting to get irritated by the thought of retiring with them in Florida. Being with Nolan and Tom is quite fine with me but having their wives Elizabeth and Courtney brings a bad taste in my mouth. “He’s too busy writing for the Bugle plus he hardly ever sleeps,” said Tom. “Maybe if I were Elizabeth and was stranded here at the pit of Manila, you’d do nothing but strip the very fabric of nature just to see her. I’m just an old geezer anyway. I’m of no use to you anymore eh, Thomas?” I said in my most tormenting tone that I use whenever they don’t do the things I ask them to. “No mom, it’s not that. I’m really swamped right now. You’re a bar top-notcher so I’m sure you can handle a 19 hour flight to Florida.” Now I remember. He always pulls that off. It never fails to work anyway. “If I don’t get there by morning, give me some good funeral music. Good-bye Tom.” I was laughing hysterically after saying this. “That wasn’t actually funny attorney, love you mom.” I hung up and then sat down a bit to think. My neck was hurting and my back was aching. Meh, who wants to grow old anyway? If only Gregory were here.

He was right. I am too much of a coward. I woke up in the hospital. The doctor warned me that my heart’s condition is very critical and that I needed to go to United States for a transplant soon. However, that transplant might not be successful. I was torn into fragments. Sophia called me. She told me that she needs me. I finally told her about my condition. I heard her burst into tears. I couldn’t help but cry as well. I don’t want her to get hurt. I want Sophia to live a normal life. Seeing her into tears due to the pain I bring kills me. I told her to forget about me since I

you will come for me; that you will pass by this railroad. I see a girl wearing a tired floral dress, the lilacs looking withered. Heads down tears touching the dry ground--a perfect sight of a breaking heart. A girl who waited in the wrong station, who waited for a jeepney that will never be on the train rails; like waiting for the man she will never have. It’s painful. As painful as an infected wound that has never been treated; like my heart that has never been loved back. Traipsing away on that very old railroad. She still had that beautiful sight of him in her heart. She still had his silhouette visible in her mind. She still had that fascinating rhythm of heartbeat for him. She still loves him but she’s tired. I’m tired. “I love you. I always want it to be you but it’s completely terrifying of being like this for the rest of my life.” I’m done.

wanted to cut the rope that binds us. But she never did, she kept writing messages. Couple of weeks passed. My doctor told me to leave anytime soon because my condition gets worse every day. She told me to go to US two days from now. My mom immediately told me that we’ll be staying there for good. I was saddened. I cannot leave Sophia. I love her. But then I was coward. The promenade came. I tried to go there, to bid farewell. I saw Cole walking away and Sophia crying near the fountain. It broke my heart seeing her in pain. I went to her. Her innocent eyes touched mine. She was very stunning. Indeed, beautiful inside and out. She told me that she wanted be with me. I was completely shocked for a minute or two. I asked her if she is sure about it because I might cause pain to her once again. “I am,” she said. “I found the joy of my life in you. I chose to accept you for who you are. So why would I let even a minute distance split the two of us?”. I remembered what she told me about happiness back then. She is the definition of mine. She was fearless. I should also be. She defined life for me. I should fight for this. I should be dauntless. I kissed her and we ran away from the venue. We rode Cole’s car since Sophia has its key. We drove to the place where we used to go, to the peak where we could see the sky. We lie down and gazed at the stars. I gently held her hand. She stared at me. I could not keep my eyes off her for it was like taking a glimpse of heaven. Her laugh makes me fall in love with her even more. I am so grateful to have her. I am truly blessed. God gave me Sophia. I pulled her closer. I put her hand on my chest to let Sophia feel my heart beating for her. Her heart was on mine. I could feel her fingertips strumming my heart. It plays the impeccable melodies. As I gently kissed her lips, I uttered. “I love you, Sophia.” No words can unriddle this love I feel. She is my happiness, my life. It was a fearless decision, to stay with her until my last breath. I have no regrets, I lived. Thank You.

I’m really sad about leaving my office yesterday. The site of the first gray hairs that covered my scalp. The truth is, I was the last person to leave that place out of the original employees. I was the first to come and the last one to leave. What I was really waiting for was that young newspaper boy who promised me to become a lawyer and replace me there. But he never did. I do hope he didn’t forget about me and how often I buy the Inquirer, teaching him some of the meaning of the words. I’m afraid of forgetting things, and being forgotten as well. I grabbed my bag and gave one final look at my place that housed me for decades. “Gregory would have asked them to go here instead.” I whispered. I guess this is the way things will fall. I might have looked like a fool but I waved good-bye at my unit. I locked it and kissed the doorknob like some insane cultist.

“I got here and you were broken and the management never had any time to fix you. What a shame.” The elevator was working though it only goes down to the 2nd floor. I had to take the stairs down to the ground floor. I find it hard to believe that I’m going to miss the dusty maroon carpet floor that I cursed one time when I fell. I went out and called a taxi. I didn’t feel anything at all while going to the airport. If there’s anything, it could probably be sheer excitement. I paid the fare and entered the airport right on time. I handed my passport, visa, and ticket. The person I handed it to started to look a little confused. “What are these ma’am?” He asked. I don’t know if I were on national TV for Just for Laughs. “Shouldn’t you be checking that? I mean like the picture and everything? Like in the movies?” I am beginning to get pissed for I am going to be late for my flight.

A Writer’s Letter by Jonjielynn Ramos

I won’t live in forlornness as melancholic fluids flow inside my body. My thoughts won’t be astray in the sombreness of despair. I intuit toughness for each chide of my pen. A sheet of paper wipes the tears people can’t behold cascading down my cheeks. The deafening weeps of grimace that no one will ever hear are flowing with the ink of my pen that

will kiss its lips on the brim of a vellum. I will never be alone for I am a writer that silently bespeaks and leans on the palms of my pen and paper. These things won’t be jaded upon me. For in writing, no one will express weariness at my umpteenth life sentiments. For in writing, my wails are heard.

“Excuse me ma’am but what do you think is this place?” He asked. I actually lost my sense of respect. “Isn’t there anyone who is more qualified and not incompetent like this idiot here?” He is getting in my nerves. “Well? What kind of airport is this? Is this how you treat your passengers? Why the hell are you all looking at me with such concern?” The security officer approached me and was trying to calm me down. “I want to speak to the head. Now.” I told the guard. “But ma’am this is not the-“ I cut him off while he was trying to explain to me. “I need to see my sons! Don’t you get it? My flight is at 12:30!” Then I finally saw someone who quite looked familiar to me. It seems that he’s both confused and happy to see me. “Attorney?” He asked. I was puzzled on who this person was. “Do I know you?” He asked the guard to leave us. “I’m your newspaper boy remember? I work here now. What are you doing back here? I thought they said you were going to Florida?” Back? What does he mean back? I’ve never been here at the airport. “You work at the airport now? That’s nice.” He smiled at me like some sad grin. “Attorney this isn’t the airport. This is where you used to work. There’s your office. I work there now. That’s what you wanted right? Look around.” That’s when things began to make sense. But why am I here? “And that’s not your visa, passport, and ticket. That’s a time card, your ATM, and an old receipt.” I didn’t know what to feel. I just hugged the boy amidst my confusion at started sobbing gently on his blue polo. “Am I going to be alright?” I asked him. “We’ll work something out attorney. I haven’t forgotten about you yet.” He assured me.

The perks of being an unrequited love victim

by Jerica Veron Telesforo

I drew her in my world I write her in my lines, I want to be her man, She was never meant as mine I drew her in my world; She is always in my mind; Though she cannot be mine I think of her every night I drew her in my world; I draw her all the time, But I don’t know where to draw the line. Six long years and I still keep this feeling in my little room of fears. Fear that if I tell her this, not only might she reject me, but I might also lose her. The way I liked her, saw her, and felt about her were never reciprocated. Six long years, she never knew. Should I feel bad that I lost someone who never loved me back while she lost someone who truly cared for and loved her? Our story begins by her not loving me the same way I love her, and that’s how it might end. “Look who I bumped into,” “When will you tell your true feelings, Dylan? When will you give up?” “To both questions: Never will I. That is deemed final” I’m used to seeing her happy with her man, thinking that I will never be the one to fulfill her fantasies. For another six years or longer, I still need to be used to it and enjoy

the pain even more. The pain that helps me feel alive. Pain indicates I’m still alive. I have even attempted to change who I was for her to notice me, to possibly love me. I can do that once again, but I cannot alter the situation. I love her but she doesn’t love me in return. Why hold on if I remain an option? She keeps on running to me whenever her man causes her too much heartbreak. I’d always say ‘Everything will be fine. He loves you’. And I can only whisper these words: “I am in love with you”. She doesn’t hear. She doesn’t even ask. If she does, I’d refuse to spit it out. For six years I remained a friend. I was happy whenever I am with her. She invariably shared their stories, moments of intimacy where I wasn’t allowed in. I was happy that she was happy, even If I wasn’t the reason behind it. Unrequited love is my realm. I know even the tiniest detail about the decision for me to hide the feelings. Six years, I kept at it. I’ll keep at it, until she realizes I’m the right person to wipe her tears, to listen to her stories, to love her even when it hurts. I’ll keep mum, unable to roar, but I will love her each day, each time louder than sustained whispers. I’d rather not be the light in her life, or the bright day might make me obscure. I’d rather be the cold darkness for it remains--unseen, uncertain and unsure. Forgive me I’m gullible, always saying “Yes” to her. Forgive me for not giving her up. Forgive me for not thinking of myself. Forgive

Entry No. 143 Dear Diary, It’s been a while since I last wrote to you. At that time I was the happiest person alive. I smiled a lot and every day seemed like a gift to me. But my friend, the tables have turned and now, I am broken and torn into pieces. My world is changing constantly. I’ve encountered many ups and downs that I don’t know if this will ever stop. Recently, my dog died. He was the last true companion I had because this world is full of fraudulent commitments, fake promises, and false love. I am able to write to you now after I gained myself a little after Maxx passed away. I’m glad that during his hardest days, Maxx never left my side and comforted me up to his last breath. Too bad, I wasn’t able to make his remaining days memorable. I’ve decided to move on and get my life back in shape. Only, I don’t know how I’m supposed to begin when it’s not only Maxx’s death that burdens me. The last time I wrote to you,I shared the happiest moment I’ve experienced by far. I achieved my goals, graduated with flying colors and landed on my dream job. Half a year later, I gave my parents the life I wanted them to have. I had a house built that I can call my own. I travelled the world and live my life to the fullest. Those were the last things I told you before everything changed in an instant. Now, as things slowly break apart, I can begin moving on by being honest with myself, with everyone else, and with you. The last 142 entries have been secretive. Not because I didn’t want anyone to know, but because even I,didn’t know myself. I was confused and lost in the truth. For the past years, I’ve hidden my radiant colors inside the closet. It felt like I hid them on purpose, but I think I hid them unknowingly and now it’s accidentally being exposed. I thought liking a guy was just normal so I kept it to myself. But it happened again with a different guy. The feeling was stronger; I couldn’t contain it to myself so I wrote my emotions down on a piece of paper I always kept with me. Then I met another guy but my paper can’t hold it anymore so I spat it out unintentionally. Instead of fireworks, I heard thunder dominate the sky as if I was cursed. And then doom came upon me when my friends walked away one-by-one, except for Maxx and John. John was a friend I accidentally met while I’m on a trip around Cebu. It was my short break after a toxic year. We became friends after an unfortunate incident. After some time, we grew fond of each other. When I came out and my friends walked away, he comforted me. He eased the pain I had when my friends left me. Slowly, I saw him in a different way. I saw

him as someone more than a caring friend. He became special to me more than any guy I liked. One night I told him how I felt. It took me a lot of guts to confess my feelings for him. While my eyes were closed, preventing a drop of tear, I felt his lips against mine. He made me feel that our feelings were mutual. After that night, our bond went deeper then we began sharing sweet moments together. Each day I heard him say how much he loved me, that we will last for a lifetime, assuring me I was the only one. But one day, I woke up without an “I love you”, an “I promise”, and without a “You’re the only one.” Instead, I woke up and heard him say he can no longer keep things the way they were and bid his good bye. Then I knew there was no more love and I’m no longer enough. I was wrong to believe that there will be “us” in a lifetime. He walked out and shut the door. My knees trembled and tears rushed down my cheeks. Maxx came running to me, while I slowly broke apart from that sudden break up. It took me months to redeem myself slightly. But when I thought I was completely over John, I found out he left something unfavorable. A gift I’d surely keep for the rest of my life, and possibly be the cause of my death. My friend I’ll be facing tomorrow as an HIV positive. I have to live my life and inner strength is now a necessity to me. I’ll be facing judgment as I let my friends, relatives, and John know my case. I’m certain, this is an evil and cruel society where being different is a sin and I can’t change anything about that. I just hope you could support me like what Maxx would do if he were still here. In the memory of Maxx and for the fight I am about to face, Steve

me for loving her. I don’t know what’s ahead. I don’t know what the statistical probability of her falling for me, or I, unloving her. I don’t know how it will end. But I know I won’t stop here. I won’t sit here and do nothing. I won’t invalidate my feelings. Unrequited love is one of the most painful things to get through, but there are things to gain. There’s a positive takeaway. I’ve become braver. It had always hurt me seeing her talking to her crush, even more so that they’re in a relationship now, which implicates more than plain conversation, more moments of intimacy. But it doesn’t anymore. It made me stronger, all the time I had to wrench my gut, seeing her with him. I think nothing of it. I’ve desensitized myself—made myself immune to any sentiment of their intimacy. It’s just like that. I matured from being naïve into being a better version of myself. I learned that the world doesn’t revolve around me. There’s somebody else. Not always my day, not always my will. I can’t always get what I want. Someone also wants it and needs it more than I do. The sad truth is that someday, what should have been yours, will be owned by somebody else. Since I kept giving it to her and it stays there, never coming back and I felt I’m running out,my heart grew. I learned how to love even more. Because I know how it feels to never be loved back. I discovered that love goes both ways. It doesn’t always need to be about romance. I

Meaning

There his meaning was traipsing in mid-sentence; the swell of truth in a tightrope at the brim of his lips; each possible word a blow-torch to what remains to save this once more. Another time to try. One final notch on the belt of maybe’s. He doesn’t talk. “What was it that you were going to--” I ask. Eyebrows risen, eyes widened--as if it were the face of Huck Finn in a parody by Allan Poe, the grimace bereft of earnest adventure, ousted by indigestion. All of the times in this manner of polite reluctance I have known him the type of person to say “no” in crooked lines on his face, a hint of canine when he squirms, turning around to face anything else but me as I wait for a response. “Nothing.” How mean. How extraterrestrial. I keep hearing him say nothing when I know him layer by layer as I wait for him to unpack himself and trust that it hurts when I’m told “Never mind,” and “No worries”, like the finest work of a housekeeper sweeping shards under the rug, the misanthropy of open secrets recognized yet unshared. I don’t want the truth to be in compartments and pockets, organized by language of stealth. I want it to oscillate the way it should between stellar patchworks of mutual meaning. Yet he turns it to an elaborate system of flogged openness. I can never have him tell me what bothers him. It’s a complicated arrest. His monsters cuffed in ledges. The swift accusation of getting him to spill, having more legwork than pleasant. “What is it that you want me to say?” “Anything in your mind, please.” “There’s really nothing,” he starts, “No worries.” “No worries, what does that mean?” “What do you mean?” “I’m asking you,” I said. “What does that

saw love in my family, and in my friends. The world doesn’t revolve around me, and my world doesn’t revolve only around her. I met new friends. We engaged in activities, letting me see where the other side of the world is. I discovered that I could write--poems, mostly. I discovered my true self. I ended up knowing that I am more capable of loving. I learned how to love the unlovable, and for her I am one. I learned to love myself the way I want her to. Unrequited love will not stop until it gets what it wants. Unfathomable it may be, but the love that is reciprocated sometimes and somehow fades easily. But an unreturned love never stops loving. I’ll keep on doing everything, even things I haven’t done yet. The challenge keeps me going. Indeed, I don’t know what’s ahead. She might finally fall for me, or I might learn how to un-love her. But even with the pain, I remain. I’m still here, witnessing her narrative with a person who isn’t me. I’d rather be called a fool than blame myself at the end of the day for not fighting my love for her. I have to push myself to see how far I can reach, because I’ll never know how far I can go if I stop pursuing and trying. Better to experience moments of distress and pain in the achievement of your dreams than be comfortable without accomplishing your dreams. Hereafter, I am looking forward for the best ending of our unrequited love story.

by Carl Jerome Velasco mean? Tell me more. Just do that.” “There’s really absolutely nothing, I promise you,” he said. I shut up. The course of a beeline with this person never does run smooth, an invariable case. I can’t even trouble him in idle; can’t get him to engage. What if he’s dead-reading Austerlitz? Or anything Hilary Mantel? In another plane of consciousness where I can’t get in, where the words in mouths become indistinct sounds and vibrations, and all meaning is lost. I recently had my braces removed because it hurt when we kissed. Right on. What a savage way to kill yourself, peeling off a piece of metal that pelted lips in contact. I could have waited it out until my teeth retracted in due time as it ground with chipped sibilants. Never did I guess what little this meant for him to see. That I, so accruable and in top form for sadistic self-neglect was to be repaid in unequal measure with horrendous disparity. But consequences are so far and few in between that I don’t need to be arraigned in a pedestal. Whose choices needed confirmation that valued a similar sacrifice? No worries. Never mind. I promise you. What do these mean? “You don’t love me anymore,” I said. “This is what this means.” “What the fuck are you talking about?” “You’re not interested in me anymore. You’re not interested in what happens next, too. You’re now so extinguished.” “I really wish you hear yourself sometimes. What is this?” he said, in a three-mile stare, too far to care. I didn’t answer. That was my truth; what it meant for me. Maybe it was me who didn’t love myself anymore? Could I possibly be in constant chase of reason for us to dissolve? I have never really thought of that. Maybe I secretly want this to be over and not have me blamed on me, if it ever. I sweated bullets. Raked my hair with trembling fingers. I took a breath, undeaden the silence. But it was no good. All he did is stare. Waited for me to back that shit up. I ate the fear, I digested the fear, I shit the fear. It smells bad outside my skin, but there’s less of it in me. I wish I can shave off my head, stab my nape and see if there’s still blood in there and not just shame. I looked at him in the eye, thinking what’s what, condemned myself for what I have become, and gave it a name. I’m okay.

Mental Note by Allaine Jolina Matic

I want you to know that I am so proud of you for getting out of bed to get to school or work today even though you wanted so badly to just lie down and cry because everyone and everything around you doesn’t seem to go the way you want to. I believe in you, your body loves you so. Do not hate it. It does its best to keep you alive, for all the times you harmed yourself, your body heals itself to remind you just how much it wants you to keep going. Your heart hurts now but it still keeps on beating to remind you that you are alive. The things that matter now probably won’t matter for you in the next five years. I want you to know it’s okay to be sad, it’s okay to feel bad about yourself but know that I love you and you’re all I have, so please do not give up. Read this letter for the times that even drowning in alcohol and smoke won’t get you through the night, or for when you feel like you’re losing your grip. You are strong, you are brave, and you hold the key to your own happiness. I love you.

The dark has had its share of misanthropy. Nobody likes to be kept in it, and a lot of people are afraid of it. Ninety-eight million of our winged friends die each year in North America alone because of light pollution. The New York Audubon Society says the birds are distracted by artificial light that’s too bright, causing many cases of in-flight collisions. Paul Bogard, author, goes on to suggest that artificial light is changing our eyes, losing scotopic vision (ability to see better in low light conditions). His book The End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light calls natural light an endangered resource. “People think they know darkness, and that they experience darkness every day, but they don’t, really.” On the Bortle scale, a tool created by John Bortle to measure the darkness of skies, cities would be Class 9—the brightest on the scale. “Most of us spend our nights in what he [Bortle] would call a 5 at best, or more likely a 6 or a 7,” says Bogart. “We rarely, if ever, get any darker than that.” Until Edison’s light bulb, Bortle would classify our night as a 2 or 3. It’s astonishing to note that a class 1 on the Bortle scale is described as being “so dark, that it’s bright.” Class 1 suggests a level of darkness that is not only capable of showing the Milky Way, but also capable of casting shadows because of it. ou do not fear death. You think this makes you strong. It makes you weak.” I recommend you watch The Dark Knight Rises for it gives a brief moment where this blind prisoner tells Bruce Wayne (a.k.a. The Batman) that he having no fear of death in fact makes him truly weak. We oftentimes pretend to be brave even though we are actually afraid of something. Or we just think we are, when we’re not. We all have this fear of cockroaches (show of hands please). The impeccable combination of being dirty and fast is written all over its exoskeleton. None of us wanted anyone to ever know that someone like us becomes disoriented by such a small critter. So we act like we’re not afraid when we are in front of everybody though in fact we’re shaking like mad whenever it’s flying or coming near us. We’re more concerned with what people have to say rather than our own self-interest.

People think they know darkness, and that they experience darkness every day, but they don’t, really. Paul Bogard

Darkness causes us to lose touch with our surroundings and we opt for artificial light to quench that fear. Maybe we shouldn’t be scared of what’s in the dark. Maybe we should look for it this time, try to find what a “night” bathed in artificial light conceals.

ear is helpful more than it is lethal. It makes you stronger. We all need to be strong in our everyday life and the only way to obtain that is to be fearless. Yet in order to be fearless, you have to learn to fear your fears. I’m not telling you to display your fear across to the whole metro, what I’m trying to say is that you don’t have to be scared of being afraid. Everybody has their own fear to share, they may all look tough on the outside but they still have something that makes their chest pound every once in a while. Something that makes them startle when they see it. They can always lie, but it just won’t help. You don’t need to beinsipid and ignorant about it, you just have to embrace it.

I

It’s like fear is some sort of challenge. You do not become strong if you do not challenge yourself to be better. Like joining a contest or tournament. There is only one fear throbbing the very veins of blood flowing through your brain. The fear that you’d lose or humiliate yourself. Awareness of this is the key to making more out of yourself. Accept your fear, learn, and you shall become fearless. How else would you strive to fight longer or move faster than possible without the most powerful impulse of the spirit?

Fearless Philippines: Five Filipinos proven to be ‘a-tapang-a-tao’ by Allaine Jolina Matic / Raniel Lorenzo We really do find it amusing, and yet not surprising at all, that the cases of the stellar Filipino personalities and of the martyrs are being held up in social media as indicators of Filipino “courage”, and consequently, Filipino pride. Because of their effort to exert excellence and loyalty, these notable persons are worthy of respect and nobility to their contributions in their class, and by extent, to their fellow countrymen. Here are five (5) Filipinos that made it to the top of our list. Manny Villar: From senator to entrepreneur Manuel “Manny” B. Villar Jr. isn’t terrified to compete against retail giants, Sy and the Ayalas, through his Starmall and All Day Convenience Store. Villar stated that Starmall is expecting to complete five new malls by the end of the year, and even pondering to add three to four malls annually. Apart from Starmall, he is also eager to grow his proudly Filipino chain of convenience stores, All Day, which is an ant compared to its foreign competitors 7-Eleven, Ministop, Family Mart, and a new player, Alfamart. As of this writing, All Day has about 100 stores nationwide. “I like the challenge. A lot of big companies started small. SM started as a small department store… you can be the David and you should not be afraid of Goliath. If your business has been around for long, yes you’re ahead, you have a big market share, but that’s also a liability. If you’re new and small, you can incorporate the latest trends (that consumers look for.” Rodrigo Duterte: Davao City Mayor Davao City Mayor, Rodrigo “Rody” Roa Duterte, has been featured in the news for his fearless handling of law offenders. His mantra to criminals and more espe-

cially to drug lords has always been the same – “If your intentions of staying in Davao is evil, then get out of my realm fast or face serious consequences.” The last time Duterte made a headline was a few months back was when he made a tourist swallow a cigarette butt, after refusing to follow the city of Davao’s smoking ban. “Papiliin kita: barilin ko ang b...g mo, i-preso kita o kainin mo ang upos ng sigarilyo mo,” Duterte allegedly told the smoker. The smoker reportedly apologized, picked up his cigarette butt and swallowed it. “Never ever challenge the law” Duterte was reported as saying before he left. Duterte has earned adoration from his supporters for his leadership style that many said helped turn Davao City into one of the safest in the country in the world. Francis Libiran: Famous Filipino couturier Francis Libiran is pitted against international designers from all over the world for his “extreme” talent in fashion designing. After being hailed as one of the mainstays in the international market, he is also the only Filipino to exhibit his notable creations at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, California. He was most famous for being invited by Tyra Banks to show his collection at the top-rating TV show, America’s Next Top Model (ANTM).”To be part of this legendary TV show for the second time is, again, an honor not only for me, but also for the Philippines.” Libiran told ABS-CBN News in an interview. He first appeared in the said TV show back in 2011, where he made a “Hello Kitty” project. Liliosa Hilao: The First Martial Law Detainee Martyrized at the age of 23, Liliosa Hilao was a former editor of PLM previous official publication Hasik. Hilao was a consis-

tent honor student through elementary, high school and college. Despite having a frail body, Liliosa was an active student of PLM, she was a student president of the Communication Arts department and representative of the PLM’s supreme student council. On April 1973, drunken troopers from the Constabulary Anti-narcotics Unit (CANU) came crashing in the Hilao’s abode looking for Liliosa’s brother. Having the guts, Liliosa demanded for a search warrant but was answered with a slap. She then was dragged and took for questioning. Her brother-in-law said that according to Liliosa, she was tortured, evidenced with bruises. The following day, she was reported dead. According to CANU’s official, Liliosa committed suicide but the post mortem diagnosis showed she was tortured. A vacant seat was reserved for Liliosa having consistent high grades and was given posthumous cum laude honors. Aisa Mijeno: Filipina Entrepreneur and Green Piece Activist During the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Week, Aisa Mijeno, the co-founder of Sustainable Alternative Lighting (SALT) steals the spotlight because of her innovative lamps powered by saltwater. Mijeno thought of creating saltwater-powered lamps for the natives of Butbut Tribe in Kalinga who relies solely on Kerosene lamps and moonlight for doing their evening chores.“At first, I thought it was some kind of a prank call; a joke. I didn’t really take it seriously. Just imagine, you’re doing your mundane activity and then you have a caller telling you she’s from the White House.” She was on an APEC panel with US President Barack Obama and the creator of the online retail store Alibaba, Jack Ma. The panel discussed how the SALT Lamps can be an economical approach to address the climate change.

COLOR MANILA RUN

Despite people’s pockets being emptied out by The Force Awaken’s midDecember 2015 release, next year’s still a monumental year for adaptations-you’ll likely end up facing the silver screen anyway. Kipling’s The Jungle Book hosts anthropomorphic beasts, an expected sachet of adrenaline and cinematic flair. Ransom Rigg’s famous macabre novelpremiering in December gets a name lift. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiars—due to premiere in December—is directed by Tim Burton which practically means an unnervingly pleasant film is a shoe-in. Other titles include Paula Hawkin’s The Girl on the Train, and Jensen’s psychological/ fantasy The Ninth Life of Louis Drax.

“The real fun in the “fun” run.” Color Manila (CM) aims to encourage everyone to run, and to show people that exercising is definitely enjoyable. If you’re looking for Instagram-worthy moments to show off your friends, this fun run is for you. Running in between smokes of reds and greens and showing off your shirt that’s been through the war paint will be the talk of the week. CM wants to give its participants the unique kaleidoscope experience that makes the most exciting run for everyone to remember.

How does a feminist, steampunk bicycleracing novel sound? Quite unmissable, especially if it’s by Emily June Street who also penned a story in Pedal Zombies, a feminist sci-fi anthology about zombies and bikes. The Velocipede Races started as a Kickstarter project earlier this year and has already been successfully funded. Elly blue says of the project: “We grew up reading about imaginary worlds where men called the shots and had the adventures, and women were stuck with the supporting roles. And we grew up reading about futures built on rocket fuel rather than human power.”

If you’ve been following Tim Urban’s SpaceX series on his new-post-everysometimes blog Wait But Why, you’re as much as excited as we are for Elon Musk’s aerospace ventures. SpaceX’s VP of Mission and Launch operations Lee Rosen has given us the go-ahead for Falcon Heavy rocket’s launch after cumbersome delays. Come Spring, the world’s most powerful operation rocket will launch into low-Earth orbit. If you’re big on aerospace engineering, you know rocket boosters can’t land back on Earth, making this a gargantuan deal. SpaceX is doing everything to make a leap in that hurdle. And leaped they did with Falcon 9 historically landing back on Earth.

ena Dunham keeps a keen, constant watch; looking for “it”. What could be “it” that the ‘Girls’ creator is trying to look for? Is it for her brand of feminism to continue? But she’s already found that knob and polished it, proven with HBO’s “Girls” giving audiences comedy at its prime, as Dunham pens story archs with an almost scribe-like truthfulness. The show’s appeal comes from its stories about women. ‘Girls’ is about a close group of morally bankrupt twenty-somethings, whose slack-jawed narcissism puts their maturity on hold. Despite its comedy, the show is no joke for Dunham, bringing forthright and no-roundabout feminist ideals into broad social dialogue. The show is polarizing, an equal measure of audiences and critics either love it or hate it. Maybe from this, she hints at what she looks for. Maybe what she has in mind is not for people to see it in black and white—a love it or hate it poll. Maybe it has to do with “It”—that is, for more women to break the glass ceiling of a predominantly masculine industry. It’s not just Dunham who’s acted out, and it’s certainly not just the television industry. Dunham has written a collection of essays from which she received one hell of a paycheck for her literature, throw in the fact that the New York Times vaunted the title in their best-selling list. “Not that Kind of Girl” is not the first its species and certainly not the lone barometer to declaim “There’s an audience for stories about women: their opinions, their thoughts, and their feelings”. The book was published in 2014—a year whose easily defined epoch is the shrinking gray area between female representation and the media. The timing itself is noteworthy and has less to do with feminist literature actually multiplying but more to do with pundits being persecuted to this day for writing such material. It doesn’t say feminist literature is unwelcome, it says that it’s still questioned. For writers writing about male protagonists and masculine themes, no one bats an eye. But for a work with feminist dialogue, to achieve this ‘pseudo-validity’, it has to go through needless scrutiny to be given a certificate of being “worth it”. It still has to be sanitized, still has to be polled if it’s appropriate brain fodder. Look at “Oranges are Not the Only Fruit” written by Jeanette Winterson in 1985, one of the finest examples of postmodern

feminist literature. In it Winterson duplicates a subtle version of her own biography and what stands out most is the pressure for hetero-normativity (just a fancy word for annoying queries like “Who’s the girl and who’s the boy” in a same-sex relationship) where women is regarded close to chattel, whose roles only differ between bearing children, and being married to. Needless to say it’s set in a patriarchal environment that discourages women to stand by their own principles and maybe create new ones in ways they see fit and just, despite the climate of sexism in their era. We don’t have to look far to see a semblance (albeit nuanced) of it. Think of one writer who writes about feminism in the Philippines. Some familiar names come to view: Lualhati Bautista, Ricky Lee, Merlinda Bobis, Joi Barrios, or Bernadette Neri. Think of all those Wattpad stories--Mostly female writers. But female writers and feminist literature are two distinct things. The Philippines has it good. There are many female writers in literature, television, and in film. But it boils down to quality vs. quantity. Wattpad stories are dime a dozen, and yet they fail to nurture a vivid personification of women who are independent and

comfortable in their shells, women whose vulnerabilities don’t include the presence of a male persona. Women whose need to be saved by men is not a significant plot point, or a plot point at all, women whose stories weave entire archs about self-worth, decision-making, and fulfillment not entirely the product of a male counterpart. Where have we seen that lately? Over there, it seems the problem is lack of representation, over here it’s lack of the diversity of represented women in literature. Stories about women are important, legitimate, valid, and purposeful, as much as any story about a man ever will be. The collective intellect of our current society must settle to sensibilities that help these stories come into clearer view, fished out from obscurity or stigma, whose presence must dissolve and evaporate. The dominance of men in literature is mainstream. It’s an idea that has been followed across cultures not just here, but all around the world. But women should have the same rights and opportunities as men do, even insomuch as representation in fiction. In Politics. In entertainment. In the workplace. In the pages of women you read. A little while later, or best of times, now.

A CLEARER VIEW

Fasten your seatbelt. In a few minutes, we will take off. Get ready, we are to discover the world of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), we’ll look at it in a more serious way, to know how people living with HIV are coping, and to know the life they’re going through, perhaps you are going through. Let us now unveil the other side of HIV/ AIDS and the people living with this virus. HIV has no identity, a person living with HIV doesn’t look sick but looks like an ordinary person and can even look like a healthy one. Unlike other viruses, HIV has no cure. But scientists are working hard to find one. If you have HIV, you have it for life. Nowadays people who are infected with HIV are disclosing themselves to the world, courageously. Difference of HIV and AIDS

Human immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is different from AIDS. People who are diagnosed with AIDS are surely having HIV but, hold on, not all HIV positive has AIDS. AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is the worst stage of HIV. Crucial, to the extent that people diagnosed with it can only live in about three years if left untreated. Symptoms

As I said earlier, HIV has no identity. The only way to know that you are HIV-positive is to get tested. But there are symptoms for HIV depending on the phase of infection. A flu-like illness may develop within a month or two after the virus enters the body. The signs and symbols are fever, headache, muscle aches and joint paint, rash, sore throat, swollen lymph glands, mainly on the neck. HIV advances to AIDS when the virus continues to multiply and destroy immune cells and when no treatment is received. The symptoms for AIDS are soaking night sweats, recurring fever, chronic diarrhea, persistent white spots or unusual lesions on your tongue or in your mouth, unexplained fatigue, weight loss, skin rashes or bumps. HIV/AIDS Cases

HIV/AIDS cases all over the world and here in Philippines are very alarming. Infections now occur at a younger age: 20-29. Sex and drug use is between 14-19 years old. Based on the report of UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) entitled ‘Statistical Update on Children, Adolescents and AIDS’, at least 9,720 adolescents and young people died of AIDS in 2014.

IN BRIEF

In the Philippines…

Unprotected male-to-male sex, transactional sex and intravenous drug use are the specific risk behaviors of HIV infections. This year’s HIV/AIDS cases rose to over 3,000 when the latest data as of May tallied 748-the highest recorded since 1984 and made a 51% jump from the same month. This record-high tally showed 83% of the new cases involve patients aged 15-34 years old. Of the 748, 717 are males. DOH secretary said the unprotected sex between males is the top mode of transmission while 28% of the 748 aged 15-24 and 55% are aged 25-34 years old. Metro Manila reported 273 new cases of this record. On the other hand, AIDS cases this year as of May hits 41 patients and 21 of them have died.

Caloocan, uncontrollable…

DOH warned the six cities of the Philippines who exceeded the 3.5% national HIV prevalence. Among the six cities, Caloocan is now uncontrollable when it comes to males who have sex with males (MSM) risk behavior. It also said the half found in Metro Manila and without the cooperation of the public it might also become unmanageable. The six countries are Quezon City, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Manila and Caloocan. Manila also reported that most of their infections happen among males who have casual sex with other males. Obtaining actions, the health department’s National HIV/STI (Sexually transmitted infection) Prevention Program has a 2015 budget of about 500 million, 60% of which will go to the treatment of patients. Currently, DOH is also doing behavioral, bio-medical, and structural interventions to control HIV infections among Filipino MSM. Abstinence is key yes, but if you’re already diagnosed, don’t let this virus ravage your life. You can still live normally. No one is stopping you nor caging you in your own box of fears. Fear to be judged, fear that they might see you as another person you don’t want to be and fear that it’s the worst thing that you ever did and must be the last too. And to us, who really lack idea of what they’re going through, they might commit a gaffe before but it is not and will never be a license to judge them. HIV/AIDS infects the younger people currently, although we cannot force them and control their actions, the least we can offer is a profile, virtual image and a clearer view on this unknown virus.

HIV cases are 15-34 years old.

The Black Mamba bids farewell to Basketball

by Raniel Lorenzo

After two decades of playing in the hard court, The Black Mamba finally decided to retire due to his aging body and deteriorating passion for the game that doesn’t satisfy him anymore compared when he was playing in his glory days.

It was a long 20 years that he spent entirely with the official team of the Los Angeles. He said that he will pass the ball onto his predecessors by voicing his thoughts through a poem he published on his site entitled Dear Basketball. In line with the LA Lakers’ press conference, Bryant took the opportunity to express his gratitude for everyone that supported him through a speech. “I had to just accept the fact that I don’t want to

do this anymore, and I’m OK with that,” Bryant said after the game without being emotional. The 37-year-old phenom added that “My heart can take the pounding. My mind can handle the grind. But my body knows it’s time to say goodbye. And that’s OK/ I’m ready to let you go. I want you to know how. So we both can savor the moment we have left together. The good and the bad. We have given each other all that we have.

What you’ve done for me is far greater than anything I’ve done for you” Bryant wrote “I knew that each minute of each game I wore purple and gold.” Kobe became the top scorer in Lakers history and third in the entire NBA history. He won the All-star MVP awards 5 times. Each was won separately on 2002, 2007, 2009 and 2011. He also won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 1997. Throughout his career, he had scored eighty-

point game, 5 sixty-point games, 25 forty-point games, and 112 fortypoint games. As the years went on, the injuries became more serious and the absences caused by them grew longer. He missed most of the 201314 season with a left knee injury and much of last season with a torn right rotator cuff. Bryant, who will surely be missed in the hard court, will always remain as a basketball legend till the end of time.
