IN BRIEF UAP NAMES PLM AS 2ND BEST ARCHITECTURAL SCHOOL

Manila’s premier university, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), was named by the United Architects of the Philippines as the second best performing school, next only to UP Diliman with a performance rating of 85.19% for the 20-49 examinees category where PLM reaped 85.19% (23/27) performance rate of the 55.89% national percentage.

PLMSFI GRANTS 32 SCHOLARSHIPS Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila Scholarship Foundation Inc. (PLMSFI) continues its effort to support financially incapacitated students of the University as it grants 32 scholarships for this academic year. The foundation, founded by PLM alumni headed by founding President Donnies T. Alas in 1999 assists economically challenged students by giving them PhP 1,500 monthly stipend for their daily expenses as well as other means of support for their studies. PLMSFI President Terry Galvante said, “No PLM student should be deprived of graduation due to poverty.” The foundation aims to increase the number of their beneficiaries every year by 10 percent. Before the 50th founding anniversary of the University, PLMSFI has 24 beneficiaries but due to the influx of donations, the number of scholars jumped to 30 and still increasing. Ma. Concepcion Pura, one of the previous beneficiaries of PLMSFI, has recently graduated as magna cum laude with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Psychology.

UHS TO HOLD HEALTH SERVICES Dr. Maria Ana B. Mariano, director of the University Health Services (UHS), enumerated the upcoming health services to be conducted by the University for the whole academic year. Among the year-round services is the physical fitness Zumba session every Wednesday and Fridays from 12 noon to 1PM, the UHS will also continue providing immunization to PLM stakeholders for Tetanus and Flu. PLM will be conducting the annual physical examination for employees from July to August while the UHS is still planning for an event regarding the Nutrition Month before the end of July. The UHS will also provide services in line with the celebration of the Sight Saving Month on August. In addition, Dr. Mariano stated that the UHS is expected to have a partnership with the Office of the Guidance and Testing Center (OGTC) to address concerns on mental illnesses. The UHS will also initiate water evaluation within the university to ensure the safety of its stakeholders. Other activities and services are set to address hypertension and diabetes, however the UHS is yet to specify a date for both events.

PLM GREETS SHS, TRANSFER STUDENTS Two separate orientations at the Justo Albert Auditorium welcomed the new members of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) community enlightening the students of the policies and services of the university, June 9-10 and 17. On the first year of the full implementation of the K-12 Program by the previous administration, PLM had at least 1000 students both from public and private high schools. Students from public high schools are automatically recipients of the voucher program, while Manila resident students from private high schools are subsidized by the local government of Manila. Senior high school students were welcomed during the orientation program last June 9 and 10. Meanwhile, freshmen and transferees were also welcomed last June 17 and had a chance to have a dialogue with University President Dr. Ma. Leonora V. De Jesus. Among the issues cleared with the President is the paying status of all transfer students until the end of their stay in the University.

FAELDON TALKS ON PATRIOTISM: ITS IMPORTANCE TODAY BY GLENDEL NAZARIO RANIEL LORENZO

The newly-appointed Bureau of Customs Commissioner, Capt. Nicanor Faeldon, conducted a symposium at the Justo Albert Auditorium in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) last June 28, 2016. In his speech, he tackled the importance and relevance of patriotism to the youth especially now that we have been brought in a very contentious issue regarding our sovereignty. He affirmed that there are at least 10,000 youth students around actively participating in, trying to assert the sovereign rights of the West

Philippine Sea. Faeldon exclaimed that the problem in the Scarborough Shoal emerged from our lack of patriotism. “I can look at the President’s eyes, and tell him: It’s all because we lack patriotism in this country, that’s why China can do whatever it wants right inside our exclusive economic zone.” He also added that he cannot blame the people, specifically the youth, with the absence on what patriotism means. “The problem of our country is that we can define perfectly what patriotism means but when we talk about patriotism sa mga classroom natin at lahat, ay hindi talaga tumatagos lahat sa ating puso.”

Faeldon even recalled what transpired before in the West Philippine Sea, explaining that they didn’t exactly know what was going to happen and only learned a few months later in August 2012 that we lost control of the Panatag Shoal. “Bigla na lang pinalayas yung Navy natin dun, the fishermen wala na.” he said. He ended his speech by stressing the importance of patriotism and its need to be in the heart of the millions of Filipinos and upon having all that, he underlined that no country whether superpower-military country or not, can control our shores, our country, and our exclusive economic zone.

MED STUDENTS RECEIVE SINAG NG MAYNILA 2016 BY SOFIA MANLAPAZ

The Brotherhood of Medical Scholars or the Beta Mu Sigma Fraternity, a brotherhood of Medical Students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), receives the Sinag ng Maynila Award last June 23, 2016 at the Bulwagang Gat- Andres Villegas, Manila City Hall. They were chosen as the recipient of the said award because of their fundraising activities with multiple beneficiaries. One of their projects is the “Pasko na Pedia Ko” which is annually conducted to mark the end of each year. “It is a fund-raising activity with an objective of providing gifts and donations, in cash and in kind, for the pediatric patients of the Pediatric Ward, Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center,” the organization said. Another project of the Brotherhood of Medical Scholars is the “Movie Blocked Screening” (MBS) which

aims to give financial support to other organizations that are in need of assistance. On their first MBS, they were able to raise P25,000 which was donated to the Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center, Internal Medicine Ward to help provide financial assistance for its renovation. During their second MBS, they were able to raise a total of P38,000. Its partial proceeds were used to buy six (6) standard wheelchairs to be donated to their second beneficiary, the Luwalhati ng Maynila Home for the Elderly. They have also conducted another MBS with the objective to give financial assistance to the Diabetic Mellitus Clinic of Family Medicine Department of Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center. The event raised a total of P41, 000 and the partial proceeds of the event was used to buy medicinal supplies for the department. The proceeds of the P35,000, which was raised during their fourth MBS, were given to the Surgery Department

of Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center to assist in providing its needed apparatuses. Furthemore, the Brotherhood of Medical Scholars also administered Medical and Surgical Missions, an all-year-round activity. They have partnered up with companies such as Philippine National Red Cross, Ayala Foundation, Daughters of Immaculate Mary, Inc., Knights of Columbus, Perlas and Pasay Jaycees, and GMA Kapuso Foundations only to name a few. These medical students aim to be able to operate in a bigger scale in order to help more people in need. “As a student of PLM we are envisioned by our school to give back and serve our country/community. As an organization, we have our goals. I know those goals are not easy to meet but as long as we have the heart and perseverance and a real dedication to serve the community I think there’s no reason not to succeed,” the organization said.

SCS TAKE OATH, RAISE CONCERNS TO PRES. DE JESUS Student council officers both campus-wide and college-wide pledged to serve the students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) to their fullest potential at the Bukod Tanging Bulwagan, May 18. University President Dr. Ma. Leonora V. De Jesus led the oath taking ceremony arranged by the Office of the Student Development and Services (OSDS) headed by OIC-Dean Dr. Gina A. Opiniano for the student council officers. Among the issues discussed was the timeframe for the approval of student activities that has been a problem to various student organizations in meeting their general plan of activities last academic year for having a 20-day processing period. PLM SSC President Enrique Adolfo San Juan raised the concern to President De Jesus, which she gladly asked other university administrators to expedite the process to 15 working days as long as necessary documents are submitted. Other concerns include offices for student councils, ventilation of classrooms, elevator of Gusaling Lacson, possible benefits for financially incapacitated students, and support for various activities some colleges engage in.

OSDS HOLDS STUDENT LEADERS’ SUMMIT The Office of the Student Development and Services (OSDS) together with the College of Science conducted a two-day Student Leaders’ Summit with a theme “Forging Student Convergence for the University” for the accredited student organizations of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila at Bulwagang Manileno last July 18-19. The summit includes lecture proper from Bro. Clifford Sorita for Leadership and Values, Atty. Mark David Aquino tackled on the Fundamentals of Parliamentary Procedures and Drafting the Minutes of the Meeting and Prof. Michael Pastor highlighted the Essentials of Constitution and By-Laws. Student leaders have given their chances to raised their problems within their organizations and presented their proposed activities for the student body.

DISASTER READY. Students,

faculty, and administrators of PLM joined the 2nd Metro Manila Earthquake Drill, by the Metro Manila Development Authority, June 22. STUDENTS SEEK FOR REGENCY BY PATHRICK FERNANDEZ JEWEL SUMAYANG JERICA TELESFORO

The Supreme Student Council and some student organizations in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), with the assistance of various legislators inside the Congress, are taking separate initiatives in proposing amendments in the University Charter to ensure sufficient representation of the students in the Board of Regents, the highest policy-making body of the institution. STUDENT LEADERS' SUMMIT During the second day of the twoday Student Leaders’ Summit, July 18-19, Enrique Adolfo “Boogie” San Juan, SSC President, appealed to other student

organizations to cooperate in the efforts of the Council in pushing for the amendment of the University Charter to include provisions for a student regent. He added that this will be the top priority of the Council for the academic year. “Andami nating problema, andami nating nire-raise na concern. The very reason kung bakit namin nakikitang maraming ganito ay dahil we’re not represented to the highest policymaking body of the university,” San Juan said, adding that the Council is confident that the University administration is open to include a student among their ranks. “It is the right of the student population to be represented through a student regent. Through the student regent, we can directly elevate student concerns to the body that governs

and creates the highest policy for the university—the BOR,” San Juan told AP in an interview. Meanwhile, OIC-Dean of the Office of the Student Development and Services (OSDS) Dr. Gina A. Opiniano, who was also present in the event, shared her positive assessment on how the university administration actually views the concern after student leaders raised this matter on the first day of the summit, saying that university officials are not traditionalists and narrowminded and if already prescribed by the law, the officials will surely welcome the change. KAMPI initiates action Prior to the Summit, political organization Ang Kabalikat ng Malaya at Progresibong Iskolar (Ang KAMPI)

said in an interview with AP that their organization has already asked assistance with Kabataan Partylist headed by Representative Sarah Elago to achieve the same goal as the SSC. “’Yong unang naging move namin with Kabataan Partylist since si ate Sarah Elago na ‘yong bagong representative nila sa congress nagkaroon na ng meeting ang Kampi with Kabataan Partylist regarding the matter and this month probably magkakaroon na kami ng chance to take na ‘yong susunod na step for amending the charter of PLM.” Florence Gatchalian, executive vicepresident of Kampi, said. Ang KAMPI Secretary Robert Cabral added that they are planning to pursue coordination with the six district representatives of Manila to strengthen and ensure the success of the efforts

of the organization. Also, the party is going to seek guidance from Atty. Noliver Barrido, founder of the political organization in drafting the party’s proposed amendments of the University Charter. Moreover, Cabral added that the party has already submitted a letter to Senator Joel Villanueva to elevate the matter at the Senate level through their organization’s President Hanniel Saus. They believe that by lobbying the concern on both houses of the Congress, it would be much easier to materialize the change they are trying to pursue. In addition, Gatchalian said that they are going to ask for the suggestions and ideas of the students during the drafting of the amendments emphasizing that turn to page 6

Amendments to the Revised Guidelines on the Selection of Honor Students were approved by the Board of Regents (BOR), lawmaking body of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) during the Board’s 513th regular meeting last April 7. Board Resolution No.3891 allows all graduating students who have not incurred a grade of 5.0 in any academic subjects to be eligible of honors, given that a zero-based grading system is observed in all colleges. It displaces the previous grade limits for each honor adopted since 2007. The previous BOR No. 01-2005 or the Revised Guidelines on the Selection of Honor Students for School Year 2007-2008 and onwards set the grade limit of 1.75 for students applying for summa cum laude, 2.00 for magna cum laude, and 2.25 for cum laude. Moreover, shifters within and across colleges may be eligible for

academic honors as long as they have no underload or less than 15 units to take in any one semester except, if it is their last semester in the university and provided that they should not exceed the maximum residency requirement of the course they pursue. However, based on the Resolution No. 01-2005 transferees at any year level from other schools are not qualified to graduate with academic honors. Aside from BOR No.3891, BOR also replaced the existing guidelines on the change of grades. All requests must be filed by the faculty within 15 working days from the distribution of class cards. An eight days extension compared to the previously one week allowed period of filing the request after the distribution of grades within the same semester. Faculties who have been found to be delinquent relative to change of grades will be reprimanded with sanctions set by the University.

PLMayer Adrian Jim Reyes is set to represent the Philippines, as well as Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), after the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) student was chosen to be one of the nine delegates of the Philippines to the ARCASIA Student Jamboree 2016 in Hong Kong. Reyes, who is the current SSC PRO will take part of the biennial event to be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibit Center from September 26-30 alongside eight other architecture students chosen by the United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxiliary (UAPSA). The event is an integral part of the 17th Asian Congress of Architects and will be under the general theme “Growth

and Diversity: The Green Age of Asia” which aims to identify the role of young and future architects in resolving highlevel urbanization and industrialization involving exploitation of natural resources. Prior to being one of the delegates, Reyes together with other PLMayers scored the top three spots in the Play for Space: Conex 2016 Design Competition last March 11 together with Kristian Jim Hufalar and Francis Delos Santos, champions; Magic Mendoza and Jonathan Areola, 1st runner-ups; and John Louie Suizo paired to Reyes, 2nd runner-ups. Reyes, Hufalar, Areola, Suizo, and Joanne Pauline Baoo also won the championship in the design competition initiated by Mayor Joseph Ejercito Estrada for the redevelopment of the historical Mehan Garden.

A HANDICAP MATCH

As much as the students wish to place their faith on the hands of the Board of Regents, a concurrent lack of representation from the studentry within the board restricts them to do so. This however, causes a sudden repetition regarding the students’ efforts in their call for regency, which the Supreme Student Council (SSC) and Ang Kabalikat ng Makabago at Progresibong Iskolar (Ang KAMPI Party) have already initiated yet both parties are quite disorganized due to the absence of cooperation amongst the student leaders. This action that involves the call for a student regent follows a very urbane process that seeks reform initiated in the national-level and requires an intense support from the PLM community, especially from the student body. As of now, the Ang Pamantasan is concerned on how these two organizations, particularly the SSC will take into consideration the insights of students now that the council only asked for support without actually supplying the body sufficient information on how they want to act on this issue. For the reason that it might compromise their strategy in achieving this endeavor. Ang KAMPI also seems to have their own plan of action for this advocacy. For so many years, PLM students have sought for long-term reforms that would ensure the fairness of treatment to the students. The issue is never sensitive enough, which is why all students must be informed of all actions that involves the issue especially that they will be the ones who will be affected by any changes within the university. The amount of service the university provides does not completely address all the issues concerning the students and that having a student regent within the Board will contribute further improvements, especially that one of the members who formulates policies actually experiences the problem firsthand. We can even observe that there are projects that are not as relevant as what we need but are given much attention by the school administration. And for some time, students of PLM have been through challenges and sudden changes because of insufficient representation within the administration. Ang Pamantasan serves as the conscience of the students, while at the same level, SSC acts as the voice of the students alongside KAMPI - being a political organization. Ang Pamantasan and these two organizations both serve the same sector that has been marginalized in this university since its foundation. Starting from the 1960s, students of PLM have never been represented in the policy-making body of the university. The Board of Regents – that’s often posed as threat to the welfare of the students. The publication and the council, with other organizations, is expected to be working hand-in-hand in achieving the change and representation that all students of PLM have longed for. Yet, the SSC and Ang KAMPI seem to want to take this fight alone to ensure the success of their efforts while unknowingly depriving the students of giving any possible assistance to fellow scholars. This action will surely affect the PLM that is why it is a must for the SSC to involve every student on every undertaking to achieve this charter change. Same goes with Ang KAMPI, which despite being able to disclose a more concrete plan to Ang Pamantasan regarding their steps, actual participation of the students remains vague and unreliable now that there is no concrete support from the university administration regarding this action. Leading us to the fact that the students are alone on this fight. The call for a student regent requires amendments to a law that has been passed by the Congress at the time the PLM was founded. This means that provisions of Republic Act No. 4196 which led to the foundation of the university must be changed in Congressionallevel. Section 4 of RA 4196 vested the powers of administration to the Board of Regents which is consisted of, as stated in the law, the University President, member of the faculty, a graduate of the university, a recognized educator, and two other distinct personalities – all are to be appointed by the City Mayor – plus the superintendent of the Division of City Schools – Manila as ex-officio member. Given this line up of members, the idea of being left out cannot be set aside for the students. To be a part of something as important as the amendment of the University Charter is something that is in need to be cooperated by the scholars. Ang Pamantasan respects that the student council officers are elected by the students for they believed on what they are capable of but the students also pursue transparency from their governance. SSC must take action in informing the student body about this issue as soon as possible. On the part of Ang KAMPI, if they really dedicate their actions to the students of PLM, they must at least initiate coordination with other student organizations within the campus. As an organization recognized by the University, its action will reflect the community therefore it is just right to at least involve other students to this act especially that this does not concern only their actions but the PLM community as a whole. With absolute cooperation, current PLM students will achieve more than what other batches could have. One must take the first step, and it must be the SSC. Coordinate with other student organization, inform and involve students. This action must not be done for the sake of having legacy but for the good and benefit of the whole student body.

Since I was in high school, I have already been asking myself, “how can we accurately measure the learning of a student?” Traditional teaching methods include standardized tests as measurement to the learning of a student. Here, the teacher or instructor formulate set of questions from a topic that students in a class answer given a certain period of time. This kind of testing aims to identify the weak spots of every student in a certain lesson, but at the same time, it is also being used to describe the student’s learning capacity by identifying the percentage of knowledge he has acquired with the number of his correct answers compared to his mistakes in a given exam. That being said, it is justifiable that written examinations or standardized tests are to be given as means of measuring the understanding of a student. However, we should put in mind that by knowing the difference of one’s correct answers to his mistakes does not give justification on the intelligence of the student or predict how one learner will do in the succeeding years. I am not a fan of standardized tests in measuring academic learning. We have stereotyped standardized tests as a way of telling how intelligent one student could be. But as what I have said and as what we all know, standardized test measures the amount of information in a certain lesson a student actually learned. And the understanding of each lesson actually depends on the teacher, therefore we can say that the one who is being measured by these tests is the instructor himself and not the student. Thus, it is unfair to reflect

this on the student’s performance in written examinations. Recently, students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) were stunned by the new policy of adapting the zerobased grading system across all colleges in all subjects, which as far as I know was only being applied to Accounting majors before. This policy may turn tables to most of the students, given the idea that not all of the students are diligent to their studies. I understand that this policy is essential to maintain the prestige of the university and sustain its high standards when it comes to academic excellence. But this policy may post effects that are unfair to the students especially that some, if not all professors, do not strictly adhere to the guidelines on grading the students set by the University. Moreover, there are instances that grades do not faithfully reflect the performance of the students since particular standards have put some of them in discriminatory situations. My take on this issue is that if we really want to assess the capacity of the students, we must focus on how each student apply what’s being taught inside the classroom to actual scenarios that concerns their respective fields. In this manner, we could assure the reliability of the results of the examinations given a certain rubric formulated by the colleges that complements the standards of the Professional Regulatory Commission. Furthermore, we have to set aside the idea that by having a zero-based policy on written examinations we will maintain

the high standards that our university has established since time in memoriam. The goal of the university is actually to produce excellent professionals that can compete to the strongest competitor and in the future will be able to emerge as a top executive of a prestigious institution, not just a mediocre individual who only submit himself to other people because he was trained to perform according to the standards that written examinations have instilled in his mind. The intelligence of the students varies from each other. Meaning, the learning cannot be measured by one single standard examination. Students right now have a very diverse intelligence that the technology has contributed upon. Traditional examinations are outdated and can only be used to reflect how a teacher or instructor delivers his lessons to his students. And in the zerobased grading system, we will just identify the competence of the teachers and not measure the fullest capacity of the student. Put in mind that mastery of theories does not cover much of the actual scenario in the real working place. However, I am not suggesting that we should completely eradicate written examinations since it is still important in preparing the students to board exams. But let us not restrict ourselves in gauging the capacity of the student through this method, instead let us include and give equal attention to practical tests that measures the skills of a student which is more important in real life situations.

QUO VADIS, PAMANTASAN? ON POINT GLENDEL NAZARIO

There’s probably no doubt that the newly elected president of the country has already made full proof plans for his first year as the leader of the republic. Needless to say, that in his first months there were quite a lot of events that took place mainly – drug related incidents, and summary executions including also the naming of some huge personalities. He came true to what he said about hating drugs and eliminating it. He even reiterated in his SONA his plans, complete sincerity and promise to uplift the country. And we hope for the best. Leading takes a lot of gut and effort, yet mostly it requires the intellectual and moral capacity of an individual. No plan will work however beautiful, if no marrying of the minds would take place. The Supreme Student Council exists for the students and their welfare, not for the political organizations that they represent. Politics on a smaller scale, like here in PLM, is nothing new except for the fresh fish that just arrived this year. They treat politics as a gateway to be great student leaders of the Pamantasan. To belong to a political agenda that they sometimes shout as loud as they could despite not having a full grasp of its meaning. Saying things they ought to say and plan stuff that they are expected to do so. It’s a cycle that went on and on for some years, and is being gullible for its unique It’s a good thing that not all buy the flimflam that much of the candidates sell during the campaign period. I’m even glad that my parents are very meticulous with who they wanted to vote for and considered all aspects before choosing. Yet popularity is a hurdle that some

candidates who have no money for TV ads can’t quite pass because of being too expensive and risky. What happens is that the election becomes a popularity poll at times. Same thing happens to the university where the competence of the candidates lies within the manner of how they appear or dress, their facial quality and impact to the mass audience, albeit having a very unique brand of inferiority unknown to most. A catchy name would suffice too and viola, you have your new set to run for office. Like a circus show in the 70’s it got too boring to the audience by the day. Much like the government we had before which in our view, was becoming too insubstantial and petty, due to the fact that they’re not doing what they are expected to do. Unlike now where we are having some sort of change for a while. In the university, we are no different as well. We have a handful of political organizations that have been, without question, the best of the best event organizers of the year. Fulfilling their duty to the student body by providing the ultimate concert or party experience of a lifetime. Claiming side by side their transcendence and that they will and have never committed any mistake for their long service in PLM. Being so great, the students keep pulling them down, despite their commitment and relentless efforts to bring smiles and joy to the Pamantasan. This is not all that they can commit to for they can do so much more yet it’s worth noting that the managers of the current regime have very limited powers bound by the ones who do not wish to be criticized. Though this is not the time to be listening to

the oppressors of the institution they think is in their command. For they will experience only anguish by the time we wake up from the immature politics that we keep on practicing to appease the ones who have already left, but are still hungry for power. This power however, is not fit for all who have it. Power in the incorrect hand is dangerous. The wrong must be punished. As all wrongs should be. The president knows that very well, and also clearly understands what he should do, about something so putrid and impure. In truth, the election was driven by the desperation of the students for some change in the way things play out in PLM. Come to think of it, voters had no actual choice but went on to embrace the best among the ones laid out. Twice. The paper and the state are having lesser and lesser people having interest about it, they only know that they are there, and they are not doing anything. Mainly because they cannot feel anything. Yet in my three years in the Pamantasan I’ve seen things I never spoke of entirely. There has been change, but it was nothing but agony. It’s too premature to ask for unity and change because in reality, the real question would be: Where will it begin? In light of this we have to ponder on what has been wrong, or where the mistake lies. For if we continue to go fight our own battles being outnumbered ten to one, we’ll only end up contending amongst ourselves. So with these hindrances barring almost every aspect of the wanted change we very much need – where are you heading now PLM?

PAPERCUT JONJIELYNN RAMOS

It was a lazy rainy day so I chose to wear my scarlet pullover paired with white sweat pants to fit in with the weather. I checked my reflection on the mirror before I went out and that day, I look like the most wornout woman of my age. Maybe the frizzy hair and the pale face that day was caused by the sleepless night of writing to meet my deadline for the newspaper release. A few weeks ago I was catcalled by one of the drunk men I didn’t dare to glance, in a street blocks away from home as I can see him with his sozzled friends in my peripheral view; playing chess; drowning on their little alcoholic breakfast. I didn’t wear any lascivious clothing that showed much of my bare skin but still I felt that I was insulted. This is how street – level harassment rugged my mindset as a woman. It doesn’t fill my confidence pot at all. It was demeaning to hear petty lover call signs from this people as if I’m not worth to feel respected. Catcalling is an act of street harassment, a comment of a sexual nature made by a man to a passing woman. A way of showing interest to a woman by unwanted commendation. Maybe some may defend themselves not showing molesting habits of getting an attention of a girl but the fumingly whistle even if it states how satisfying your face and body is, was never a compliment. Not so long ago, President Rodrigo Duterte came under fire after the alleged catcalling to a female reporter during a conference. On his stance, he defended his action as a freedom of expression. As a long time Mayor of Davao City, the President is known for asserting an iron fist regarding sexual harassment as it is stated on his signed Davao City Ordinance No. 5004 or The Women Development Code of Davao City. But, holding the highest position in the government, President Duterte is expected to be the model to the society and get engaged in a better tenure. The President must heed with his actions whatever his intention may be as his government looks up to him on making a better country for the Filipino people.

There was an ordinance passed at Quezon City diminishing any form of street – level sexual harassment including catcalling against women. Dindo Flora who made an article for InterAksyon enumerated the forms of street level harassment. According to him, light offenses include cursing, wolf whistling, catcalling and repeatedly asking for the woman’s number or for dates while stalking, making offensive mouth, tongue, lip, hand or body gestures, and visual harassment for sexual gratification are considered medium offenses. Unnecessary or deliberately touching, pinching, or brushing up against the body of a person; introduction of any object into the genitalia, anus, or mouth of any person; exhibition of genitals or pubic area, and public masturbation are deemed severe violations. As the city criminalizes the said activity, it is expected to decrease the number of harassers especially that it is now imposed with fines, penalties and jail for the violators. Nowadays, catcalling wasn’t unique when it comes to a lot of women. According to a survey of Social Weather Stations (SWS) in two barangays of a city in the Philippines, 88% of women, ages 18 to 24 experienced sexual harassment at least once. Across all ages, 12 to 55 and above, wolf whistling and catcalling were the most common forms. However, 34% of women experienced the “worst forms” of sexual harassment including flashing, public masturbation and groping. Interestingly, I have found that the student handbook of University of the Philippines includes Republic Act No. 7877. This is a law declaring sexual harassment unlawful in the employment, education or training environment, and for other purposes. Student body must be aware of the erroneous activities about showing interest to someone. After all, it must start on where we are molded as a better individual. I think all universities including Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila must have this law on their handbooks and be further informed about the best feat to do. A campus must have guidelines on what is the right pace to do when they experienced

this inside the school. Universities as an institution must be able to show such act being implemented. As young individuals, we must feel that we are protected not just by the national law but also inside our respective campuses. Tons of internet movements and awareness to street – level harassment are immensely obliging in dismantling the fear in wandering the streets and lessening the unwanted catcall. The will to finally stop this activity is to take courage in speaking for your rights. In a blog, “Hey Baby...” Why Catcalling Has to Stop by Laura Newcomer it says that the process begins with communication, with speaking up, and with supporting targets instead of their harassers. Dismantling the cultural dynamics that make street harassment “commonplace” or “okay” is, to be sure, an uphill slog. But, for the benefit of everyone, it’s a trek worth making Victims of street - level harassment must not think that whistle, honk and hoot are just a low key kind of sexual assault. Every unwanted form of compliments received is in need to be fined and cured to prevent this continuing off beam deeds. You’re not just helping yourself, you’re saving other people too. The courage of speaking will also boost the confidence you lost in harassment because it shows how strong of a woman you are and others have no right to disrespect you. We need to defend ourselves by reporting the harassment to discourage the continuing behavior. Women must take care of themselves by not being passive about men who practiced such deeds. By not arguing with them about the disgusting manners, we only let them think that what they’re doing is right and we are only letting them to continue as a threat to other people. Receiving blatant sexual assault will never be a compliment to be bliss with. We must not think that they see us women as too beautiful that they can’t resist catcalling. Real men should behold beauty as something to be valued and respected. Don’t be afraid.

CONTENTMENT IS THE KEY WORK OF ART JEWEL SUMAYANG

I can say that the war against drugs is a failure because we don’t need to kill all those drug users or drug pushers. If we wanted to lessen the problem we just have to think of a way that can help them to stay away from drugs like building a rehab center. Extra Judicial Killing is not needed to stop the war against drugs. Anonymous, College of Business and Management

These recent killings may be effective. However, we cannot vouch ALL of those who were executed as addicts and pushers. I say “due process” must be observed under these circumstances. BATO, College of Engineering and Technology

I’m not against it, but I’m not supporting it either. I’m in that gray area, where I don’t really want to have a definite opinion on it, because it’s a delicate subject. I mean sure, you killed the drug users, the so-called “scum of the society”, but where’s the morality in killing them? You robbed them a chance on repentance. On the other hand, killing these drug users sends a clear message to the masses, that being “If you use, or sell, or create drugs, you’ll die”, that will make people scared of using drugs, so they won’t use it at all. There are many other cases where this could be right or wrong, but honestly, I’ll just stay away from the drugs, and keep myself alive. And one more thing, we humans don’t have the right to play “God”, I’ll let you all decide on what I meant with that. Party Poison, College of Business and Manage ment

It’s getting out of hand. The drive to eliminate illegal drugs, its users, and pushers, bigtime or not, has put the lives of even those that were only accused, in jeopardy. The rule of law was seemingly compromised in order to satisfy the want to end illegal drugs which, for me, is something inappropriate and unlawful in its sense. Jullian, College of Science

Ja Makasela, College of Science

Many times I feel like I’m not enough. I feel so flawed. I used to struggle desperately with my self-confidence. I really think that I still need to work on it. I know that what I constantly feel is a conventional thing for people. My grandmother once saw me looking completely baffled about life. She sat next to me and said, “Flowers can also resemble humanity. Imagine you are the only rose in a garden full of daffodils. Surely, you’ll be easily noticed, picked on and be discriminated due to the fact that you are not similar to them. The prime essence is that, by your peculiarity, you would seem to be preeminent.” I was amidst contemplation after she uttered those words. I have realized what beauty is really all about. Beauty was never about having white or dark complexion. It verily comes from different heights and sizes. Do not conform to what the society tells you. Also, never believe in what the media tries to tell you because those affirmations are all contorted. The only thing this society knows is prejudice. Today, we live in the generation where social media is considered to be used extensively. We could blatantly see the walloping upheaval and emergence of trends. Do not go along with the perpetually moving waters from the

stream. It will just conceal your true colors. Do not try to shape yourself just to fit and accord to things that are new because if that trend comes to its point of regression, the mere fact that you had yourself molded will eventually be senseless. I want to tell you this “You are a work of art, a masterpiece. You are beautifully made.” Nobody could ever be a duplicate of you. Accept every inch and every curve of you. Try to appreciate and see all the goodness that is in you. Never forget that you are wonderfully made by God. Do not let anyone judge your worth. You matter. You weigh more than a diamond or even gold. Nobody can tell you otherwise. Here’s a piece of advice I would also like to share: “Stop comparing yourself to others. You don’t really need to be like anyone just to look pleasing and acceptable. Everybody has their own pace. Everybody has their own distinctions and those are different from yours, uniquely disparate.” Be the best version of yourself. Dare to be different. Try to improve yourself externally and internally for beauty shines as well from within. Try working not for the other people but for the betterment of yourself for you don’t live just to please them. It was never about them. Do not try acclimatizing yourself just to accord to what’s in. You are made for more.

Ineluctably, people will surmise you as if they know everything about you. They will underestimate you. Subconsciously, people will try to convince you that you are not good enough. But never pay no heed to the fact that, at end of the day, no one else’s opinion is going to matter. Who are they to tell you who you really are? Try to look at yourself in the mirror. What you see is obviously through your own eyes and not theirs. Now, do you think they have the right to throw you hurtful things about you? Stop letting the false perceptions of the society bring you down. Beau ideal is just a perception of somebody, not by the entire humanity. The only difference between you and some people, who are considered as the epitome of prevalent beauty, is the amount of commendation they acquire from the society. Apparently, the amount of compliments and such grandiloquent words are nowadays considered the bases for one’s value. As we could see, especially on various social media sites, the definition of aesthetics is distorted. Your beauty is poetic. It may be delineated by anybody based on their discernment, but only you can unfold the real definition. I have realized that the only time we’ll feel beautiful and contented is when we try to fully accept our flaws and imperfections.

Hindi ako nag aagree sa way ng govt para maprevent or mabawasan yung mga drug users and pushers because it looks like poor people who are accused and “confirmed” as drug users/pusher are killed on the spot without having the right to explain er defend their selves pero for the people who have high social statuses; it takes a long time bago makulong or maparusahan even if they are confirmed na drug users/ pushers. MDR, College of Education

It’s not the right thing to do, not the best option we have, but it’s what the people want so why not? Gray paths are there, and gray lines shall be walked. Smolbi, College of Science

President Duterte, if I’m not mistaken, decided to focus his administration in a fight against drugs. But, as what I am seeing now, the alleged drug pushers are being killed without proper jurisdiction. As a citizen of this country, I am not in favor of his way because it takes away the right of the accused to explain or defend his/her side. Even if they are sure that the person is a drug user or pusher, we don’t have the right to put an end to his/her life. Smcandarei, College of Science

ANG PAMANTASAN/ JUNE-AUGUST 2016

THE ART JUMPING ON THE BANDWAGON OF “PAGGAPANG” ANGELICA QUERO

EMPTY THREATS JERICA TELESFORO

I am an NBA fan. I supported, cheered, and gambled for Golden State Warriors in their conquest for back-to-back championship against Cleveland Cavaliers this recent 2016 NBA Playoffs. But honestly, I do not know who their coach is. I barely even know each player’s name, only Stephen Curry and why not? He is the most well-known player in the team. He shines bright, even brighter than LeBron James, Derrick Rose and Kevin Durant. I am a neophyte supporter and I have not watched all their games this series because I did not intend to. But, I kept on tweeting and posting the highlights of their every game against the western teams. I do not stand by and tune in for updates about the team. I am only a fan during the final round of the series, mainly because it is the time when all the people are talking about it. So, I must fit in. I am also a volleyball fan. However, I am not consistent and loyal. I am on the blue side only when the standing is in favor of them. But, when the green army takes over the game, I then alter my decision and go for them in an instant. Merely on the grounds that people’s bet will be the potential winning team so, I must go with them. I am a fan during the success of the team but not in times of failures. The national election has ended. If you are going to browse my profile on Facebook, you will notice that I supported Miriam Defensor Santiago since majority of the youths campaigned for her being “the woman with high standards.” Conversely, I voted for someone else. Showing to people that I am with the Iron Lady of Asia will make them think that

we share same principles and it will simply categorize me in the level where they are. So those are the roles I portrayed, characters that I am not to begin with. I have absorbed and put into my system what the society admires. I am surrounded by pernickety individuals who made me realized I am less. It has never been easy to fit in, to be a part of the world full of not-some stuff. Pathetic but I have no one to blame. Faking myself has been the field where I am good at. Bandwagon fallacy is defined as an argument validating something based upon an irrelevant appeal to its popularity. It is joining a cause because the majority of people do so. Fame or appeal to the public is the only one factor that drives people to jump onto the bandwagon. Majority of the people voted for certain politician thus, that politician is good. Many agreed with my opinion therefore, it must be right. When everyone is doing that, it is good. These are some familiar and daily bandwagon fallacies we commit. People keep on beguiling us that the argument they believe is true solely because it is a popular thought. While us, having no knowledge about the issue will just tend to believe, take the widely popular thought, and label it as a true argument. Let us recall that years back we were once bandwagon fans. Anyhow, it is not something detestable. We have joined a typical crowd commending someone or something we barely even know just because of its appeal to popularity. We own our opinion and it is not something that we should base on people’s preferences. Otherwise, we might lose the

chance of being a human who is free to voice out opinions and judgments. We could still and should still adhere to who we are, keep our good values and be ourselves. That would be our perfect picture, being ourselves genuinely. We might be an abstract, difficult to fathom, complicated, and dreary. Yet we are eccentric, beautiful, and most especially valuable. People must not define who we are and maneuver who we can be. We should show them our true selves without the flecks of their image, without their taste and flavor we keep on adding to ourselves. Let us unleash our true and beautiful version. It has been a long time since we started hiding the authentic us. Percolate things that we would like to imitate. A friend once told me, everything is good but not everything is beneficial. Give our lives a respite from duplicating someone. The bandwagon tenet is not correlated with the good life we are about to build. Jumping onto the bandwagon covertly mesmerizes us. I do not exclude myself. As you read this, I too, might have been committing the bandwagon fallacy. I might sound jumping onto the bandwagon of those who condemn people committing this fallacy. Fallacies are something in life that is certain but false. We all commit each kind of fallacy not just bandwagon. However, at the end of the day it is still up to us to answer how frequently we rely on those bandwagon arguments.

CHANGE IS ABSOLUTE

When people ask, “Oh, kamusta naman ang pag-aaral?” there are moments when we tell them, “Okay lang naman po, ginagapang ko ang pagpasa.” Getting into college has surely been a tough but fun experience for students, especially when they are in the course that they did not even plan to take in the first place. Thanks to the company of their block mates who share the same sympathy in every requirement that is needed to be done. Truly, students will never know the art of “paggapang” until they reach the most crucial years of being an undergraduate – those years that are slowly wakening them up to the realization that sooner or later, there will be no more summer vacations, no more home works nor problems that can be solved inside the classroom. Thus, vacations will just only include those red numbers in the calendar and those problems to be solved will be future-related, needed to be thought of carefully, not just in dependence of other’s advices. Soon, everything will be out of the professor’s nor the school’s decisions for your future will soon be all in your hands. No more lies about it, students will never avoid the fact that they do requirements simply because they are requirements. They study because they need to, they go to school because they have to, even sometimes for allowances. However, we have to be realistic about it, sooner or later, you’ll realize the developing truth that there is more than passing what is needed to be passed. Dear PLMayers, college is a preparation to what lies ahead in the real world. We go to the university to learn and gradually build a version of ourselves that we have always dreamt of.

College years do not consist of four years of “paggapang” for the hidden truth is that it is a four years of preparation to build your ideal self, well, only if you’ll pursue your studies in a way that there is motivation in you – goal-focused, eyes forward and not going anywhere! Find your motivation. Find what your biggest goal is. You can go lie and tell everyone that you are “gumagapang” but you can never lie to yourself that you are going on because someday, you want to feel satisfied of yourself and be the person that is worthy of the others’ proudness. Don’t let it happen that one day, you’ll regret not listening to your professors and you’ll regret that you did not give off your best in your college years. Do your best to not regret staying in mediocrity. Stop the connotation and get back on track to the real deal. Start the real striving for your future.

STUDENTS SEEK ... LEDGER RANIEL LORENZO

One of the many battle cries of President Rodrigo Duterte, along with his war on drugs, criminality and poverty was his proposed shift to the federal system of government. President Duterte strongly believes that only federalism will solve our woes with political fiascos, over dependence of the local government units to the national government for development, and centuries-old rift with our brothers in Muslim Mindanao. Federalism is defined as a system of government whose primary feature is the distribution of powers between a national authority and local states. It promotes national solidarity and cooperation in governance, nation-building, modernization and development. The idea of federalism gives emphasis to regional and local self-rule and selfreliance in regional governance based on the principle of subsidiarity. This means that decisions should be made at the lowest possible office concerned where the problems can be solved. While regional or state governments are designed to be autonomous in their regional and local affairs in relation to the federal government, which provides assistance to various states, especially less developed ones, like our brethren in Mindanao. With Federalism, state governments are closer to the people they serve, arguably making it more within the reach of their communities than that of the central government, making it far more responsive to the specific needs of their communities and make policies and services more customized. However, changing from one form of government to another is not as simple as changing relationship status on social media. In the Philippine context, it divides and limits power from the national government. It supports ‘real’ democracy by rejecting ‘majority rule’ (Imperial Manila) across the whole federation. Regional diversities including economic and cultural differences would be

accommodated, allowing problems to be taken on a local perspective. However, federalism working well in some notable countries that are models of good governance - USA, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, and Germany among others - is not a panacea to centuries-old problems in the Philippines that are found deep-within our culture, nature, and collective discipline. Before undertaking such radical movement, we must conduct an in-depth scientific inquiry regarding its practicability in the Philippines political setting - where history heavily suggests the festering presence of corruption, succession through dynasty, powertrips of those in power. As for the citizens, tax evasion, non-obedience to law and ordinance, and apathy to relevant public issues plagues this country. In exemplar countries mentioned before, federalization was a nation-building effort. Political entities collectively loosened their disparate interests, gradually exposed their citizens to social upheaval, and revised their constitutions with high regard to inclusiveness and progress without compromising culture and tradition. All measures previously taken are collective efforts from the government and the people that transformed themselves into a unified nation through federalization in order to better suit the needs of the people and make proper representation which is truly of the people, by the people, and for the people. Federalism increases participation in the democratic process, as people are able to elect leaders that will represent them in the national government. Regional officers will play far more important roles in the community they are at as the creation of jobs, education management, local development, and the economy will be the job of the federal state concerned. Without and in-depth research study showing how federalism would effectively work in the Philippine context, it will only be utter foolishness to advance from this point. All forms and structures of governance, whether central or federal, should be carved from the unique experience and history of the people and their nation

and not imported from foreign models to implement it automatically in the homeland. For instance, the existence of a political culture and public attitude in Canada that supports federalism in refining their constitutional definition of federal powers and the regional unit pays homage to heterogenous groups present in their soils. Likewise, the federation of Malaysia was carved out of the common desire of different sultanates to form an independent nation free of British influence. The new-found unity formed from federalism made the respective federation more productive regions, sensitive and generally peaceful. Perhaps the biggest gainer if federalism shall push through will be Muslim Mindanao. The secession felt by the people is caused by implementing rules set by the central government based in Metro Manila or as President Duterte would call it, “Imperial Manila’s ” execution of the law because of cultural, political, and ethnic differences. Federalism did not eliminate problems for these countries. But it is worth considering that conflicts arise much less compared to that when the unitary government. Problems would still be present in the federal government but the problems would be easier to solve when it is tackled when it is designed locally. At the end, while our new president has the right and freedom to make the blueprints of his dream for the Filipino people happen, adequate amount of time, discussion, and research are required in order to better build a design that would suit the federal system that would finally give importance to our individual and collective needs, development and history and a nation. The other half of change is up to us, the citizens. We cannot be pristine in these times where talks for federalization is more active than ever. We are living in the present with a blurry future and the need for radical change in governance is absolute.

they are the main concern of this matter. Ang Kampi is planning to conduct an open consultation to the students of PLM. However, Ang KAMPI said that they are going to communicate their efforts to the student council once they finished the draft. “Kung tatanggapin nila, kung madadraft na namin ‘yong amendment and mayroon ng mga pagpapasahan kung tatanggapin nila ‘yong mga effort na ginagawa namin ico-coordinate namin sa kanila but kung hindi kung magpupursue sila sa efforts na ginagawa nila okay lang din naman samin.” Gatchalian clarified. Ang KAMPI proposes a student regent who will be elected by the student body simultaneously with the SSC and CSCs election. Cabral said that the student regent must be student biased since all the students of PLM knows the burdens the students are facing when policies are implemented that represses students’ rights. The student regent must remember he is not alone in the fight against the policies that is not for the students. The party’s effort to propose student regency started way back in the 2015 SSC Elections when Vientree Santiago of KAMPI made the matter her banner project during her campaign against San Juan and Ang Partidong Tugon’s (APT) standard-bearer Thessalonica Cadiz. Bukluran's take on Student Regency Despite being affiliated with current SSC President San Juan, Bukluran Students’ Alliance – Integrated Students Organization (BUKLURAN) affirmed that the party is unaware of the actions the Council are taking with regards to the call for a student regent, while it said that they are not surprised that Ang KAMPI has their own initiative towards the issue. Bukluran President Salvador Mante III said in an interview with AP that the call

for student regency has been the battle cry of the organization and they believe that it has to undergo a due process therefore it will be a lengthy process. “’Yong process ng student regency ay sobrang mahabang proseso kasi dadaan pa ‘yan sa legislative process kasi ‘yong org naming ay naniniwala sa due process kaya hindi kami basta-basta nagta-take ng action agad-agad,” Mante said. Contradicting to the proposal of Ang KAMPI where the student regent must be directly elected by the students, Bukluran believes that the student regent shall be appointed by the city mayor from five nominees elected by the students. “Dapat lahat ng member ng Board of Regent[s] supposedly is appointed so kung magkakaroon lang tayo ng student regent gusto ko nasa proseso, i-aappoint sila pero hindi nangangahulugan na dapat isa lang naniniwala ako na magkaroon tayo ng mga nominees na kung saan sa kanila pipili ng i-a-appoint. Based sa law dapat ‘yong Mayor kasi siya ‘yong taga appoint ng board,” Mante said to AP. However, Mante added that Bukluran is willing to coordinate with the SSC and Ang KAMPI regarding the issue, but also noted that Bukluran’s reservation is the process it has to undergo especially the party’s primary principle is intellectual honesty. “Ang reservation ko lang dito is kung mamadaliin tapos hindi dadaan sa due process. Kasi ayun talaga ‘yong pinaka isa sa prinsipyo ng Bukluran is intellectual honesty na hindi lang talaga tayo honest dapat ginagamitan natin ng intellect o pinag-iisipan natin kung ano ‘yong mga kilos natin,” Mante added. As of writing, details of SSC’s action for the student regent is yet to be collected by the publication but there is still no definite move from any of the organizations that has reached the Congress, ensuring the materialization of the efforts the soonest.

ANG PAMANTASAN/ JUNE-AUGUST 2016

Lupang Hinirang, MATATANGGAL Bayang Magiliw PA BA ANG LANSA NG ISDA?

JEWEL SUMAYANG PATHRICK FERNANDEZ

The Fault in our Stars, Paper Towns,Twilight, at marami pang iba.

mambabatas tulad nina Senador Loren Legarda, Pia Cayetano, at dating Kinatawang at ngayo’y Pangawalang Pangulong Leni Robredo.

PAMANTASANG MAHAL Pamantasan, pamantasang mahal.

Wag mong sabihing wala. Kasi nararamdaman namin yon. May nagbabago, pero lagi nalang kaming nagbubulag-bulagan. Huwag lang din sana mapuno ang salop.

Hinuhubog kaming kabataan. Maging Pilipinong mero’ng dangal. Meron kami niyan.

GLENDEL NAZARIO

panahon. At di ito umaayon sa tama. Walang tamang panahon.

Maging mabuti man ito o masama.

Tutuparin pangarap mo’t nasa, Pamantasan kami’y nanunumpa.

Lumisan? Hindi. Gusto ko nang maging tao. Maging bahagi ng lipunan. Konti na lang.

MAYHEM

ANG PAMANTASAN/ JUNE-AUGUST 2016

BY JONJIELYNN RAMOS

Two hours to go and it will be my birthday. I’m unconsciously crooning the lyrics of a song from the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot album by a band Wilco while I’m fascinating my eyes through the tangled constellations of the night sky. They look like abstracts made by natural bodies. Well, I remember what Big Dipper, Crux Australis and Auriga are but okay, they’re all patterns of the stars and all of them are amazing. I decided to stop the hipster music and stare at the sky. It looked like a canvass diminishing the stars, only darker. The sky tonight actually feels like a representation of my demons inside. My soul seems to be a lost apparition in the stygian reaches of life. I’m an unidentified speck in this eclectic galaxy. I don’t even like this version of myself. An hour and a couple of minutes left, I’m going to receive birthday greetings. I’m looking forward to what new flavor of cupcake my Mom will bake; I’m guessing it will be red velvet. My younger sister will surely share new series to watch as a present and my friends will ask me to treat them out for churros and wrapped salads. Don’t get me wrong, I love them so much. A tight hug from my dog will be fine and okay.

It looks like I’m pleased with my life. Life started the day we came out of our mothers’ womb. That day was the first time we shed tears that dropped down our cheeks; pretty amazing for a one-day old being. We were all loved the day the world welcomed a new breathing creature, I was loved that day; innocent and whole. A song of Ricky Skaggs says life hits hard. It’s funny how we all started unbroken and as we got older we can’t even pick up the shattered pieces of our soul. I had my first heartbreak when I started to ask where the man of the family is. Where’s my father? I asked a question that made turmoil, I thought. Thirty minutes left, my happy birthday alarm song will break the silence of my room. I’m fine with that question not being answered back until now. Tolerably okay. I always see how my friends are proudly posting happy photos during God knows when, Father’s Day. Everything’s good. I looked fine and perfectly incomplete at the same time. I told my dog a secret. I’m afraid of the idea of love. It’s like traipsing in the thin lid of a wine bottle. Anytime you will fall and submerge, you’ll be drunk. Some

people can manage the alcoholic spirit and some just can’t control things when they’re wasted. It’s a gamble. I can’t bet on anyone while my soul is broken. The thing is, in art, I’m an unfinished piece. I’m not even a masterpiece. Ten minutes left. I remember my mother once told me something about a flower when I was young. She picked a lovely sunflower from our Victorian flower pot and made me hold it. She asked me to pull one petal. I didn’t want to ruin the flower but I was curious. So I did. “Look at this sunflower, even if one petal is gone, people will still know what this is. It’s still a sunflower. It’s still as yellow as the morning sun. Still, it smells like resin. It looks incomplete but it doesn’t make it less beautiful.” Two minutes and I’m turning eighteen. I wish I was another soul. Maybe life would have been happier. Well, my life is a tough ride. Happy Birthday music rings. This life. It’s a metamorphosis. It won’t settle. I am still what you behold. I look whole but inside it’s mayhem. Soon, I won’t be chaos.

TWO YEARS

BY SOFIA MANLAPAZ

I used to dream about castles and princes and living happily ever after while wearing a beautiful tulle gown. So I was basically dreaming of having a book with the title “Another Cinderella story”. It will be about a girl starting from the rough, bullied, criticized, belittled with the healthiest dose of demeaning words you can throw into the mix. Then one day, I will suddenly have my very own deus-ex-machina and my whole life will suddenly take shape and every little puzzle piece will be in their right place while I’m sitting in the corner doing nothing but wait for my pumpkin carriage to take me to the ball. Well, sorry to break it to you dear, that is not what you call life. That is not how stuff work around this universe. Everyone seemed to love the classic Cinderella story. The ever satisfying feat of a damsel in distress. Our childhood favorite fairytale that we’ll never get exhausted of hearing every bed time story. A princess in blue who simply waited for her fairy god mother and then suddenly had the world at her fingertips. If our lives were a Disney princess story it will probably be a Mulan and never a Cinderella. Yes, you read that right, Mulan: The Warrior Princess. Now that is a great title for an autobiography right? It will be about how life always starts out good. How everyone is always set off for greatness but there are a few skips and turns along the way. Our plot will build on how everyone just expects you to be a rose, how you were dressed up in red petals just so everyone (including yourself) would think you were a rose but inside you were really a tulip; a beautiful peach tulip, but no one cares because everyone is a rose so you have to be a rose too. Then you started shedding those red petals off, you were starting to blossom as a tulip. A lot of roses were sideeyeing you but you were starting to not care because you knew you were beautiful and

people just have to accept that. It’s about all those great sacrifices. Sacrificing your fame and fortune, your reputation, your phone, your slot in a contest, the last piece of candy in the store, your hair, or whatever sacrifice you can make and I’m sure that everyone in this world had made a sacrifice, big or small it definitely counts. It’s about family and I’m not just talking about blood relatives. Your family can be anyone. It can be a group of people around your age that have been through hell and back with you, it can be that next door neighbor you’ve known since you were in diapers, it can be that high school teacher you know you can ring up any time you’re troubled. Life is about family. About being with them through good or great and bad or worse. Doing everything for them without them voicing it out. You will also need a bit of pretention. Who hasn’t faked a smile every now and then, right? It’s about masking a few tears as dust in your eyes and laughing out loud while dying inside. Yeah, that’s life or maybe just teenage life, who knows? And finally, it’s a dash of romance. As we’ve all seen in the movie Mulan, there was love, but it wasn’t the focus, it was something on the side. It’s the chocolate syrup on your vanilla sundae; it’s fine without it but the syrup took it to a whole new world. That’s what life is. Nothing’s wrong with wanting to be a princess just start dreaming of a princess that would guide you in your life decisions You shouldn’t be waiting for your fairy godmother to turn you into a princess and carry you to the ball. Be your own magic spell, turn to the mirror and say “bippity boppity boo I won’t just be vanilla like Cinderella, I’ll be a warrior princess too bippity boppity boo”

BY RANIEL LORENZO

Two years after, you have completely moved on. You’ve taken all the possible remedies to try and you bounced back. You followed the grown-up’s way of moving on; Adulthood for Dummies feat: Booze, Bed, and Badassery. You’ve partied the animal inside of you from Friday nights to Saturday mornings. You would remember waking up the next day feeling exhausted, eating brunch with slight regret. To sum things up, you are living a ‘Project X’ kind of weekends. It was a blast but you were never really untroubled. You’ve been through a lot the past two years, you’ve tried reconciling with your old friends, twice. You failed to reconcile with your old friends, twice. There were several breakdown points while you were trying to catch up with everything that has been happening. You were saved by your Kuyas and Ates – you got through because they made you feel loved, way beyond what you think you deserve, and managed to remain like that even after they graduated. All these happened altogether while mending your broken heart. You also went through the ride you called ‘The Little Extremes of Life’. You journeyed to your epicenter, a place you never knew existed until you were that lost and broken beyond repair. One chilly morning after your final exams, you took a bath and decided to bike away: alone. Remember how impulsive you were? It was literally grabbing all the things you needed. You got your wallet, phone, and bag - all within the span fifteen minutes. First you decided to go to Tagaytay because of your fondness of the place. The road trips with your rowdy friends from high school , the topsy turvy world you were in while you were tipsy, and the feeling of being in a high place while being on ground was exactly what you needed. And do you remember how hard it rained that day? You managed to add drama to the inclement surroundings you were in. You went inside a local pub to dry yourself and you were asked to play a song on stage. You played ‘Top of the World’ which was ironic given your current life situation. But you managed to end the song smiling and fooling everyone inside the room. And now, two years later, you’ve finally moved on. You’re still trying to make your way in life by finishing college to make it big someday. You’re now laughing again, going out with friends. And most recently, you’ve confessed your feelings to your crush, something you have been keeping for the last two years. One rainy Saturday night, you were scampering your way to the Central Terminal, tired from your nine o’clock class. Racing up the stairs, all that’s running in your mind was going home to Biñan. As you

continued your way to the platform, you felt a sudden change in the environment and stopped to observe. There, on the other side of the tracks, was you from two years ago, also standing still. You made eye contact with each other, he vanished into the thin air when the swift train arrived and blocked you from him. You kept going. As you walked your way towards your ride, everything came back - the memories, the love, the fights, the feelings, the arguments and everything else. When the train finally closed its doors and left the station, you exhaled a breath, a breath you didn’t know you were holding until that moment. After that big sigh, you realized

that your right cheek was wet from the tear that fell from your right eye. Two years later, the weight and the pain you thought that disappeared was still there. The wound that you thought had healed is bleeding like it was two minutes old. The things you thought you can laugh about is now strangling you breathless. The person that you think had already moved on was made aware that he didn’t really recover to become better, he merely hid and denied all the pain. Two years later, you realized you didn’t want to move on. You wanted a time machine that will take you two years back. and give yourself a hug when you needed it the most.

NO ESCAPE

It was one cozy afternoon when I decided to stay at a nearby coffee shop. I brought my laptop with me so I could write something for my blog. Thirty minutes has passed yet I wasn’t able to type a single word. Nothing was coming into my mind. I was actually uninspired and was not able to meet the very purpose why I came to that coffee shop. I was about to leave when suddenly I noticed the door swung open. It was a couple. A tall, good-looking guy came into the shop with his simple yet pretty girlfriend. I’m sure they are couple. By the way they look at each other and hold each other’s hand, they surely are. I observed them until they left the shop after having their frappes done. I thought I already had a subject for my new write-up but I was wrong. After another fifteen minutes of writing, I was not going anywhere. All I have written was, “It was nice to fall in love because you have someone with you from the moment you wake up to the moment you close your eyes and dream things not far from reality.” I waited again, to let my thoughts flow through my being but there was nothing. I was sure of leaving so I started packing my things up and headed outside. While walking at the side-walk, I was completely disoriented of the things happening around me. I was just simply walking to nowhere. I was only thinking, understanding the world of love from the

BY PATHRICK FERNANDEZ

perspective of someone who haven’t been in a relationship. I was at the middle of my thoughts when I bumped to this guy. He’s tall, he’s good-looking. He has eyes that could melt someone away. We had a brief eye-contact which was interrupted by the honks at the road next to us. He passed by me after saying sorry. I stood there for a moment. I think I like him, so I turned my head and surprisingly he was actually looking at me. I just turned my head back towards where I am headed and went back to walking. At that moment I wanted him to approach me, but I wasn’t sure if I want to talk to him. I wasn’t sure if it was him whom I like, or if I just like the idea of the possibility of being with him, cared and loved. Or what I really wanted was to be with a girl who I know too well and whom I want to make happy. Because to be honest sometimes, I ask myself, “Have I done the right thing when I opened myself to everyone?” I am currently in the position where going back is the hardest option. Going back to the person I used to be, when everything was fine being in a lie and filled with uncertainty. Most of the time, I ask myself, “Was it right to tell them I am gay, when right now I am not even sure?” It is true, I was gay but right now, I can’t say that I am. Being completely gay is now the lie I want people to believe to put myself in a certain position where there are no

more questions. The only thing I know is that I am between being gay and being straight, and I hope there is nothing wrong about that. When I first admitted I am attracted to guys, it made me anxious because of my worry of how people would see someone like me. Especially if there are no traces of me being gay visible. I don’t cross-dress; I don’t talk to people in a very gay manner, not giving them the impression that I am soft inside; I am not really fascinated with feminine things; the only thing that can say I am gay is my uncontrollable attraction to good-looking guys. The moment I sat down with my family and told them I am not straight was much easier than what I expected. More than that, when I told my friends, whom I adore a lot, the fact that I like men surprised me because they did not show any disgust or judgment, instead expressed their utmost support for me. After that, everything seemed to be going normal, like I became free from someone who was repressing his inner self. Like I have metamorphosed to become the butterfly I was supposed to become. I enjoyed the time I thought I knew myself too well, the time that I shared my interests towards men to my friends. I enjoyed being myself. During that time, I thought I have escaped the brutality of all the confusions I have had the years before. However, it was short lived. It only took me a year and a half to spread my wings, completely. I did not foresee the fast-pace of things. I know for sure that time will come I have to face the question, “Will there ever be a chance for me to be straight again or at least be with a girl?” I did not expect that I will be indulging myself to this kind of confusion again. Things have changed, from being exclusively attracted to boys, I started liking girls too. Something is holding me back to pursue those feelings, like choosing would just be a mistake when you want both. It brought me back to zero and I have to start over, yet again. What I want to do at this very moment is to turn back time and live again in the world where people were clueless about my real preference, because their curiosity will be easier to handle than their confusion towards my sexuality. It is a bit more bearable having a label on yourself than nothing at all. Because being in between is hard to fathom for most of the people in the third party. Whom shall I want? Whom shall I live with? Whom shall I adore? Whom shall I find? When love sees no gender nor preference. When love is deeper than the great abyss of the world. How shall I live this uncommon life? How shall I look for love truer than what I think? Tell me how shall I escape the uncertainty of my feelings. Given that life is as vague as what the future and reality behold. Should I just turn back again and chase that guy or continue to walk in the uncertainty and just feel the love for a girl or a boy along the way and not live with it?

I THINK I STILL LOVE YOU BY SOFIA MANLAPAZ

In the morning that I woke The day your absence finally stroke Her voice was lingering in my brain In the memory of you two in the rain Not another tear, a year is enough Killing me slowly wasn’t that tough Inching away trying to dream Smiling when we were a team Through every single thing you’ve done I think my love for you is still not gone Loving you is not a choice Losing you was not my fault Leaving me for her is on you Oh, boy why can I not hate on you Very much I do want to Every tear is because of you You left me shattered, weak, and crushed Over you, I cannot do, under, sideways, nor above “Until we meet again my love”

I remeber the day when its raining cats and dogs and I just want to shut myself to sleep. But, there I was inside your arms wrapped around me, my eyes were closed, savoring my most favorite scent in the universe. My ear on your chest, hearing the most wonderful music that was ever scored. God, you’re perfect and I love you and right now, I still do.

PARALLEL LINES BY JERICA TELESFORO

You’re strong, I’m weak We’re a couple of parallel lines We could never meet Staring blankly at the ceiling Drawing invisible lines Lines that will never cross paths Parallel lines that will never meet But no matter how much I extend the lines No matter where I start or end Whatever pen or paper I use Disappointed, I may, it will still turn out the same The ending would be an imagination Isn’t that ironic? Because we never had an ending For the reason that I keep on going I will see you there One way or another We will definitely meet We will cross boundaries we have never seen If not, I won’t stop drawing this line Because I’ll be forever faithful in our unending parallel lines

WORTHWHILE VOYAGE BYJEWEL SUMAYANG

I have realized one thing in my life to live it purposefully. Since the day I kissed the air beneath the dawn, I knew I was a traveler. As the green leaves turn to brown, new learning awaits. Each dayspring intonates my songs of hope to learn from this trip. I once contemplated about life. As I gulp my cup of coffee, I came across the state of realization. I have realized that I should leave no room for regrets. I should unfetter myself from worries because nothing good would ever happen if I don’t distance myself from those. Live a good life these are the words that I keep telling myself from time to time. It’s about overflowing your life with happiness. Travel as long as you can. Visit beautiful places and capture breathtaking views, catch up with an old friend and try new restaurants and coffee shops. I am a wanderlust. I have been traveling for a couple of years. I have realized that traveling isn’t just about going to places. It is more than that. It is about exploring the things beyond the borders. Life is a long journey. It encompasses a lot of things. There are places to discover, people to meet, dreams to chase and goals to achieve. Despite tripping over and feeling knackered amidst our journey, we must learn the best way to live to stand still. I am beyond grateful for my life is a beautiful struggle. I have realized that it is not just about living and breathing. Take a leap of faith and see the difference. As time goes by, I learn the value of experiences and the value of my journey. That fact makes me a fulfilled person. I believe that learning something new makes life worth living.

ONE SHAMELESS GUSH NEVER BY JONJIELYNN RAMOS

He held on tight to the bottle of coffee he bought thirty minutes ago as he heard Claire say “What if?” while watching the movie his peer in review school recommended. What if? What if he didn’t think that she’s just a mere atom he can’t look at? He let his eyes feel the tears now proudly flowing down his cheeks. It’s been a long time since he felt this stinging sensation in his eyes. Honestly, he has been trying to hold back this little drops to let her feel that he’s too strong for her rejections. He’s the man in their made up fairytale, he shouldn’t be crying. He blatantly made her feel that she doesn’t have a chance to enter his shattered soul. He made her into an insecure mess that couldn’t be saved by anyone. Well, he just believed the idea that she couldn’t be saved. The thin line he can’t bet into is between waiting for their perfect time in the future or to drown in the ocean, he wants the both of them to swim; to command the wish of love. He chose to wait and he regretted it.

A PREOCCUPATION

SAVE ME

BY PATHRICK FERNANDEZ

There are days when I find myself drifting away to deep thoughts and for this special day my mind seems to be drifting off to the concept of relationships. How do you tolerate talking to someone for twenty-four hours non-stop even when there is nothing to talk about? How do you eat at the exact same place, at the exact same time, at the exact same table for every single day you will be in that relationship? How do you live in a rut? How do you take long walks with a person without a destination, without a plan, and with nowhere to go? How do you get lost in love? Me? I’m here, no relationship, no commitment, no nothing. I do things on my own, cause I don’t have anyone to do them with. I don’t have to get into this massive argument from a petty thing like wanting to hang out with my friends because I don’t have a significant other who will be mad at me. I can stroll around the mall; enter every shop I see. I can eat anything I want, anywhere I want. I can try new things every day and it will never be a routine. Unfortunately, that’s not everything. Yes, I do wonder how these people stay in relationships but I also wonder, why am I not IN one. Is there something wrong with me- scrap that of course there’s something wrong with me but something’s wrong with everyone so why am I standing

He found his coffee empty as he searched for reviews about the movie he’s still watching. One line caught him off, “True love never carries an expiration date.” He doesn’t believe it. He remembered her saying she’s done loving him. The sound of Charlie’s voice got him looking back at what his watching. “Because the truth is, Sophie, I am madly, truly, deeply, passionately in love with you.” The line explains what he’s feeling at this very moment. He loves her and it’s hurting like a dispirited person in despair. She thinks that he doesn’t love her the way she wants to be loved, he just let her see the unruly, chaotic and messy side of him. He’s sorry for showing the disarray lump of his personality. It’s just that, he’s not ready. Writer’s Note: She’s a very lucky girl. I wished I was her. I wished you can look at me the way you are being fascinated by her laugh. I wished you had loved me too. It’s a privilege to write your story, with her. I love you.

here, dumbfounded that I’m the only one flying solo. Am I not attractive? Am I not intelligent? Am I not loveable? Am I not good enough? Well, then again, how good is enough? But maybe the reason why I’m alone is because I lost grip of a premature feeling that may have developed into love. Around three years ago, I felt that premature feeling, I thought I was about to experience love for the first time. But I didn’t. Did I let go too quickly? Did I easily get tired? I wasn’t ready back then, but I sure am ready now. Now that I’m ready, where is that premature feeling that can one day turn into the great mystery of love? It’s nowhere to be found. Don’t get me wrong, people come and go but that’s my problem: they come, then they go… sometimes I push them away, sometimes they just leave. They probably get tired for always trying to fix me up. Now, I am this lonely soul, deeply occupied by the things I want to do and the things I need to do. Feeling the sincere deprivation of love, happiness, and pleasure. And It’s not fun. “Tell me, where did I go wrong, What did I do…” Just suddenly felt like belting out a Side A song. But with this scattered mess, what will I do? Where will I go? How will I fill this extremely empty soul? Will I ever fill this empty soul? Because I’m so tired of writing this single’s story, I want to start writing about the unending tale of love and I hope that story starts soon.

I was walking around our garden that day. I didn’t want to hear them doing “it” again. Like all Sunday lunches we always had, more often now like it’s a scheduled thing. We began having these mingling every Sunday since dad stopped going home. Basically he’s seeing this Pagliacci looking gal I saw him kissing once. I could see mom from our glass door where she smiled at me while having an argument with Henry, to which I smirked back. So I continued walking around our yard until I stumbled upon this little moving thing on the edge of the grass. It was hairy with a pitched brown and white color. I bended a bit down and looked closely at it. “Aren’t you the most non-attractive thing that I ever saw?” I murmured. “Yet you have guts being alone here. Being so small and gushy. A bird might just spot you and eat you alive. But you’re here chewing on that dry grass.” I was so alone I spoke to a caterpillar. Like a worried man to a psychiatrist I was so sad I turned to an insect for advice. I saw that when Aunt June was so upset about my cousin Tommy’s sudden death. She came to the psychiatrist like a last resort to a fatal illness. I went back home and saw mom and Henry still arguing and cut them in the middle of their wild talk to ask if we have a jar of some sort. Mom turn towards me and patted me at the head and asked me about it. “What are you going to do with a jar sweetie?” She started hugging me and called Rosita to help me with my jar. Rosita came running down and odd that she and dad looked at each other for a second or two. “Yes Senora?” she asked. Her knees were dark as usual and she was a bit sweaty, maybe from cleaning or from running

so fast down from the 3rd floor. She was wearing this worn out white shirt with a YES FLORIDA! on it that mom gave her last Christmas. She was also wearing black shorts just well above her dirtied knees matching the black curly hair she has. “Get Charlie a clean towel from our drawer so I could wipe his shoes. There’s also a jar of pens at my desk. Remove the pens and place them inside the left drawer of my table and bring the jar down here.” She told Rosita. She went upstairs and there was just complete and utter silence in the dining room. Until Henry spoke and asked me about something. “So how’s school Charl?” I hate that thing he calls me. “Don’t call me that Henry. It’s fine. School’s too easy.” I said in a mellow tone. Mom didn’t much care that I called him Henry. She’s used to me being rude at him or at anyone I’m not comfortable with. She noticed how drastic my change was since their first fight. But she never told me otherwise. Mom walked away for a bit and Rosita came down with the towel and the jar. I could hear mom talking to her about the towel. Rosita always make some mistakes even with simple instructions. “This is a face towel. Pamunas ng pawis ito, much like what you’re doing right now. We’ve been through this countless of times that the colored ones are for your perspiration and the dark ones sila yung basahan!” I could tell that she was making a fuss about this only because she is totally pissed off with Henry’s presence. “I’m sorry Senora, it’s just that they look the same to me I get a little confused sometimes. I’m sorry it won’t happen again.” Sounding like a helpless whelp, she marched upstairs again to get a rag. “It’s okay mom. You can wipe my shoes later. I’m going out again anyway.” I said.

BEEN THAT GIRL

BY SOFIA MANLAPAZ

Perfectly curled hair Sitting properly in a chair Never eat a bone for spare Carefully arranging all her bears Learning to knit strand by strand Tying her hair with a really tight band Never has played on Bermuda Land And politely giving everyone a hand Curing all the ill and sick Using every beauty trick Never being a prick And never having to kick This was the girl I was supposed to be The girl who could walk straight and properly The girl who could do no wrong Sorry that girl turned out wrong

“Okay Charlie just be careful.” She then went back to the table and started another rousing conversation with Henry which I do not want to hear. I went back to put the caterpillar in my jar. Someone or something that I could at least share my sentiments with. I looked grass after grass and found him at the edge of a flower’s leaf. I broke a stem of some plant and placed it inside the jar. I then took the flower also and fixed it with the plant I placed. I hurried back to my room running past Henry, mom and Rosita in the living room. I placed the jar near my dinosaur printed lampshade and then I lied down. There I began to tell him my thoughts. Every morning and every evening. I would appear for only 5 minutes at our Sunday lunch then leave. It went on like that for days and weeks that I lost track of what mom and Henry are talking about. I kept on telling the caterpillar my secrets and wants in life which is now is in its pupal stage. It was inevitable, the fact that one day dad might not show up again. It’s as inevitable as the day that my butterfly would leave the jar, and leave me. So I told it everything. That somehow, it might follow dad and tell him how much I miss him or how much I really like him. Despite all the bad things I threw at him, I still wanted a dad like Henry. I only changed myself so it wouldn’t hurt much by the time he leaves, that I already moved on from him. But it didn’t work. I was only 12 back then. Now I’m 21 and I’m still waiting for him to come back. My butterfly sure is dead but I want to ask him if it ever told him what I always felt. I want to go out and look for him. It’s just that my doctors won’t let me.

The world just went in such a hurry recently with the introduction of so many innovations that were made for man’s ease. These high end inventions brought comfort and relaxation to man, and also gave forth a change in the way we communicate. Faster and simpler in ways. Mom and dad was able to find their batch mates and long lost friends. You were able to talk to someone you don’t’ really know that well to make friends. You engage in a lot of socialization, the sand and true part that is - coupling came in so easy. Everyone was like so much in rush to find their true love regardless of their age and mindset. It’s happiness they say, complete and utter bliss to the mind and soul. That’s how they define the feeling of being in love with someone or being with someone you love. There are people who find love as an opportunity to take advantage of

feel their love for each other. Especially my grandfather who would only speak two lines and then he would shut up. They would sometimes sit beside each other and talk for a bit and feel like it was the best conversation they had.

This is courtship all the world over - the man all tongue; the woman all ears.

Stranger Things will definitely give you goosebumps if not raise a few strand of hair. The Netflix original that has references to the 80’s but feels brand new, has lots of unique characters, and isn’t afraid to go dark. It is awesome, dark, and mysterious. It was written and directed by Matt and Ross Duffer and executive-produced by Shawn Levy.

others while the rest are just lovesick little puppies. Finding the right one is no walk in the park. My grandmother always repeat her story about how he and grandpa met whenever I come over. It’s because it’s truly intriguing how a woman from Bicol was able to marry a Manila boy. The details are not actually important but the thing is, my grandma was not also expecting she would find love here in Manila because it was none of her concern. She came here for work and met my lolo. The remainder of their married life that I saw (grandpa passed away in 2003) was very short but the way I perceived it was that it was really quiet but I can

That’s one example of true love yet I’d like to wonder if the flicks and shows that come in and out of the media now are what best depicts the happiness of having a genuine relationship is. Not just something you went into to feel good about yourself. It’s in these incorrect perceptions that poison the mind of the youth nowadays which never actually ends in a good way. There is no glee nor a little bit of joy, only heartache and pain at such a young age. The struggle is real. Although in my brief moment of having to deal with the engagements of courtships and the constant search for a lifelong partner, I knew it already when it was the right one. The thing is actually,

if you risked. There’s just things that are worth risking for, and in order to find that out is to feel it within yourself. You have to be happy. I’m not saying right now but at one point in your life you have to learn to give yourself what your heart truly desires. And if that person is what makes your dreams come true then there’s no doubt how able he/she is to help you make them real. This however, is how I define it. “That’s how you know you love someone, I guess, when you can’t experience anything without wishing the other person were there to see it, too.”

SEARCH THE WORD EPHEMERAL BY JONJIELYNN RAMOS

I have been dreaming that someday I will go to Paris, the most romantic place in the world, with someone I love and the both of us will follow the tradition of couples going to Pont des Arts. Writing initials on the padlock, hooking it on the railing at the side of the bridge and throwing the key on the River of Sein as a depiction of eternal relish is something I believe that two people are committed to each other forever. To get married is like entering a oneway road, there’s no going back. It’s all about being sure of someone whom you want to wake up with even if he snores while sleeping, someone whom you want to get shamelessly crazy with, someone that you will accept even if he doesn’t know how to fry a hotdog, someone whom you will choose as your favorite person a million times and someone whom you want to be with for the rest of your life. When you find that person, you will never wish to untie the wedding knot. Something I realized in this life is that nothing is permanent. I grew up from a broken family. I still remember the time when I found out an old photo album inside my grandfather’s room. It was a wedding album of my parents. Their smiles were an art you couldn’t trade with any gold. They looked like the most in love people of their age. It was a happy sight.

BACK TO THE WILD WORLD

BEFORE A HISTORY

English indie rock band Bastille is set to release their second studio album ‘Wild World’ on September 9, 2016. The new album will feature 14 tracks as of the writing. ‘Wild World’ following their 2013 success from ‘Bad Blood’ which was nominated in the 2014 BRIT Awards for British Album of the Year. Fans from all over the world cannot wait any longer. Thousands of them are flooding Bastille’s twitter page with support for the new album.

Potterheads became gaga over the premiere of the trailer of the first installment in a trilogy prequel to the Harry Potter franchise . Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them revolves around the character of Newt Scamander portrayed by Oscar awardwinning actor Eddie Redmayne. The film is set to hit the big screen worldwide on November 18, 2016.

Something that was not expected to just end. My parents parted their ways but they just can’t get out on the hole they both entered; marriage. My mother and I have my father’s name and that is one thing a woman accepted when she chose to marry a man. She still brings his name in all her government records and registrations even if they we’re only husband and wife under the law. I don’t know what to feel about this but it’s like you are imprisoned to a place you wanted to escape all your life and that was totally frustrating. The legalization of divorce in the Philippines has been an argument for several years. Our country is the only one in the world aside of Vatican City that does not allow the dissolution of marriage. It is said that it is mainly because of religion. We have a mass number of Roman Catholics in the country so the decision of the church is what we choose to be in favor with. But, is it really what the married couples who wanted to exit the bond of matrimony wanted? There is legal separation and annulment that can be consider by unhappy married couples in the Philippines if they wanted to end their relationship but it’s not totally about breaking the tie between them. Legal separation is allowing the couple to live apart but can’t commit to remarriage and annulment is a long judicial process that should be associated with grounds that are in need to be proven. Marriage is a theater wherein most of the hopeless romantics wished to be a protagonist someday. I admit, I wanted to be a lady wearing an elegant bridal gown, holding a bouquet composed of my favorite flowers to smell, the classical music in the background, my favorite church and the man of my dreams waiting at the altar,

staring at me like the most wonderful person he had ever laid his eyes on. Weddings are sublime and wonderful and amazing and an extremely astounding sight. It’s something that curls around the word perfect. It’s saddening how two people chose to be together for the rest of their lives and then the magic will just fade and shoot, they want all the perfect things to end. Maybe because not all of us are lucky for our most desired happily ever after. Maybe it’s always about all the exciting once upon a time and then the story goes on to whatever the ending will be and you just have to accept the epilogue of this love story that you wished to be just a fairytale so that it will just be an imagination. Last June 2015, the love locks at Pont des Arts were disposed because of the fear that it will collapse as it will harm the Parisian heritage and the safety of the tourists. This broke the hearts of people around the world as the love locks symbolize eternal love. I know, I can’t make my dream come true about going to Paris and join the tradition of Pont des Arts but maybe that’s what life is all about. We need to accept every little and immense changes that will come, not because we don’t have a choice but because this is for the benefit of everyone. News broke about the divorce bill wanted to be passed in the congress again. I just wished that the government’s decision will follow an urbane process and will be favorable for the people. We may believe that forever does not exist but we can always go back to the day that once upon a time we all have a happily ever after. And that would be okay.

BEHIND THE WALL

BY JONJIELYNN RAMOS PATHRICK FERNANDEZ

On the clandestine ingredient of a great masterpiece, there is a soul wanting to be uttered. Every image is from a shot wished to capture all the best seconds. Every writing is from a hand indeed, caress to tell you something. Every work of art is a metaphor of what reality and imagination combined is. Passing by the “Freedom Wall” inside the Pamantasan, looking at different art pieces painted on the white wall that makes it striking to sight and show what’s on trend to the scholars made Ang Pamantasan pried the blessed hands of the wall. All of us must be curious on who are the artists behind these striking images. Well, they are just a bunch of scholars like the most us who have found a place where selfexpression, talent, and fun exist at the same time. A group of kids who shares what has been given to them, and invites more to be part of their growing family. Breathing Space VISIO PLM is an organization inside the campus which goal is to make art as an escape from the frenzy ride of hurdling good academic standing for a typical student. We all need a breath from the stacks of reports and paper works. Studying could be more fun with a little shade of colors being stroked. This is a visual art enthusiast organization that aims to contribute to the promotion of the creativity and artistry inside the university. Artists in VISIO PLM make students adept in conceptualization, production, and visual communication in order to uplift the concept of visual art. Many artists regard art as an escape from the harsh conditions of reality. It is an outlet to express various ideas and emotions, or sometimes an avenue only to expose pure and innate talent. But for VISIO, talent comes after passion. The organization invites people who have a heart for art and want to communicate their feelings through different artistic methods. The organization believes that

sometimes talent is not enough to get a grip on success. Well, that is something we need right now as students. Loving the thing you really want to do transform one person to the best version he could be. To simply make an art does not guarantee someone being an artist. Passion and love for every piece made have the great deal on

everything. Also, we are students inside a very nonconducive environment. Our only escape is to go to coffee shops with a very cozy ambiance. But if we’re going to observe the setting in every shops around PLM, there will always be an artsy piece hanging by the wall. So why not make art by yourself? An art

BY GLENDEL NAZARIO

that would really fit your mood and would motivate you to study more. VISIO PLM provides its members two things: a place where being pressured with school stuff is lessened and an opportunity to learn techniques and methods to make your own piece even with less talent. It’s Art for Art Sake … For Now An art is a representation of something. But, do people make art just because they wanted to be considered as an artist or they spend hours of stroking brushes to create an image with social relevance? There are two types of showing an expression through artistry. One is bringing art pieces to an image of uplifting what art is and the other is representing an argument or social theme through crafts. Interchangeably, dedicated to talents and passion and both things needed by the society. As a neophyte organization, VISIO PLM creates art pieces for the sake of art as they wanted to splash their passion and establish an image inside the university as the multitalented visual artists engaged to paintings, calligraphy, origami, and photography. Currently, VISIO PLM focuses on exposing and promoting visual arts to the University especially to the students. Students in PLM don’t really engage that much in the world of art despite being so close to the National Museum. We have so much emotions and ideas yet the only platform we use is writing. That’s why VISIO has decided to stimulate the artistic side of every PLM student with their artsy pieces. The organization primarily aims to raise appreciation of art but they are not closing their doors to the possibility of incorporating social themes in their artwork and dwell on a more striking and deeper contexts. We are not sure yet, but who knows the next National Artist could be one of them. Be The Artist You Can Be Engaging in talks with the artists of VISIO PLM, the love for art cracks in every words bespeak. Entering the organization not just strengthens someone’s faith on giving art a better image but to be part of a family

igniting a unified goal makes their own passion proud of them. As what have been said, passion for art is the best qualification they need. Talents can bring us up but our passion for something let us feel the love on what we are doing. Art is not just about showing how blessed your hands are, it is supposed to make you feel something. It needs to be the portrayal of something an artist wished to depict. Each of us may be an artist in some sort of way. We may just be shy or clueless of all the opportunities set for us, that’s why we stay at the corner of our classrooms while doodling and putting into image our wildest of imagination. VISIO PLM could be the right group where you really belong. You just have to walk to them near the Freedom Wall, and maybe by the end of the semester students will be amazed by your most artsy work on the big white wall. We only need to look for the perfect avenue to fully expose our talents, our passion. But it doesn’t have to be a luxurious exhibit or a legit art competition. VISIO PLM is the place for both beginners and experienced artists of our generation. Continuously evolving and adapting to the improvements of society. We want to speak but sometimes nobody listens. We want to show them something but most of the time they don’t care to watch. We want to write but there are people who are too lazy to read. Escape the cruel depiction. Every human tends to always consider what people might say, what people might think and what possible negative scenarios might happen for every actions done. We all desire to be appreciated but we are all afraid of rejections. For once, can we let our soul be shattered and feel the pristine it deserves? We are wondering how does it feel to be a canvass desired by artists to contain a great oeuvre? Crap that. How does it feel to be an art? Maybe to be an art is to be free. Maybe we should let people raise an eyebrow for the hell times they want but we are both art at some level, representations of an unspoken soul. The VISIO PLM is a place to breathe. A place to represent passion for art. A place to be yourself.

IT'S SUBSTANCE OVER FORM

BY JEWEL SUMAYANG SOFIA MANLAPAZ

Buildings should be planned with austerity in mind and its stability forever as the aim of true architecture, that buildings must be progressive, simple in design but dignified, true to a purpose without resorting to an applied set of aesthetics and should eternally recreate truth” -Pablo Antonio, National Artist for Architecture

THE PUNISHER. President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, former Davao City Mayor, was dubbed as ‘The Punisher’ by The Times Magazine right after the May 9 elections.

It’s been weeks since we’ve been under the administration of President Duterte and a lot seem to have a liking for him, especially on his crusade against drug and corruption. People sense that there is actually something that is happening within the country in the beginning of his reign. Yet none of this liking was ever present with the past presidents that we had because of all the controversies and said incompetence that it displayed. There’s a lot to expect this year because we have a far more devious leader than before although it’s too early to be proud and predict the good things that will come for the country. However, there is just something different with the way President Rody speaks, having such sincerity and dignity to what he is implying. In addition to this is his unrelenting anger towards things that are wrong and must be subjected to punishment. A lot said that he will be ineffective

as a leader because of his awkward and humorous array during the campaign period and debates. Even more people hated him when he joked about situations that are sensitive saying that his puns are “without taste.” He even reiterated in most of his talks that he will kill and is not afraid of getting killed as well. The media had their fair share of his strong words against the journalists, telling the media that they deserved to die because they were corrupt. He even threatened to boycott the media, stating that he doesn’t actually need one too many. Hundreds have already dropped dead and thousand have already surrendered in relation to the drug operations here in the country. Many of which, are afraid of dying and preferred to seek rehabilitation instead of a bullet to the head with a sign saying that he is a pusher. This issue is alarming in terms of the death toll rising every day either by being gunned down or an alleged “he tried

to snatch my gun” accusations of the police upon arrest. The president also stressed his willingness to put back death penalty, which most are totally in favor of. With the state today of the justice system in the Philippines, it’s good to look forward to what His Excellency can do about this and on how this kind of penalty will play out. Although some are still against it, the president believes that it is the clear deterrent to crime as of now. There have been several dislikes about how the president was and his actuations during the campaign period and postelection but he was true to his word that he did underwent a metamorphosis. He is far more serious now for he knows the workload he needs to finish with the public being hungry for his so-called change. As it turns out, people are glad and also thrilled with what is happening but there’s still more to be done.

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila prides its very own architecture students. Being named by United Architects of the Philippines as second best architecture school in the country asserts the natural talent of the students that at a very young age, some have already exemplified uniqueness and competence. College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) students have always given pride to our University. Architecture students, who are always known to be students with mighty and artistic hands, are also considered to be highly competitive after competing in numerous competitions outside PLM. As proof of their greatness, they have wonderfully shared their talents to the improvements of some historical landmarks here in Manila. The CAUP students’ works of art limn the talents each one of them has. They have a way with slick and modern lines that make them very structured but they seem to balance it out with traditional materials and styles. The works of these young artists, which are of unique concepts, delineate the wondrous structures found in other parts of the world. The designs come in different forms and structures. The drawings accentuate highly creative designs that embellish the structures being drawn. It is also seen that every structural foundation and every edifice drawn and shown by the CAUP students are basically constituted by lines. Lines are pivotal

part in every drawing since when these are assimilated with coherency, they form a structure that is why these must be purposively used. From their works, Pablo Antonio’s principle transcends. Like Antonio, a pioneer of modern Philippine architecture, the CAUP students show us every line that has a meaning and purpose through their architectural sketches. Renowned architect Antonio has always believed that function must come first before elegance and form and that is what the designs of CAUP students also show. Antonio transmuted the popular architecture in the Philippines, eschewing the neo-classical style for his own version of art. Antonio’s signature styles, which are also seen from the architecture students’ works of art, are clean lines, strong shapes and simplicity. Even in this modern world of technology and digital artworks, we still admire traditional pieces which have truly passed the test of time. Unfeignedly, the quintessence of the actual designs still remains even until now. The fundamental principles being applied by our Filipino architects before have still been passed on to our generation today. As student instruments in cultivating and refining the nature of arts, they have greatly contributed to the preservation and betterment of old art principles and styles. CAUP students truly contribute in fostering aesthetics through drawings, sketches, blueprints and paintings.

Calming waves down

From scratch to a winning smash BY JERICA TELESFORO

Killed his pessimism, blocked his qualm, smashed his fears, and scored out of his scarcity. He was once asked once of the undying question “to whom you owe your success?” and his answer was absolutely a story to be told. Edison “Rickson” Dazo, Junior Scholar of the Pamantasan currently taking up Bachelor in Physical Education, nearly gave up his racket and run away from the court after having no reasons to live. He tried to surpass the painful lost of his inspiration until he found his way back and started living again. But this time, with a purpose. The struggles inside the badminton court have never been easy for him after his foster mother died. He gets nothing from his stepfather aside from the accusations the latter kept on giving to him, blaming him for the reasons until now he never understands. Although his mother’s all the way up there, her promise of cheering for him and lifting him up every time he faces despair has been more than enough for Edison. Last April 26-29, he went all the way to Indonesia to represent the Philippines, with the brand of a PLMayer athlete, in the “Indonesian Badminton Open Tournament 2016” competed by eight Asian countries. Under men’s doubles category, Dazo together with his teammates from Davao City, landed 4th place.

When it all started

“Nagsimula ako sa larong kanto. Na-enjoy ko na siya tapos may nagsabi sa’kin ang bilis ko daw, so parang naisip ko gusto kong i-try.” Dazo reminisced his early years in his badminton career. He was in his fourth grade when he started playing badminton as a varsity of Marcela Agoncillo Elementary School. But before that, he, according to him, was just having fun playing the sport along their streets with his childhood friends. “Hindi ko naman talaga akalain na mapupunta ako sa field na ‘to, kasi first thing’s first, talagang for enjoyment lang, hindi ko akalain na may makakakita sa’kin tapos paaakyatin ako tapos kukuhain ko lang ‘yong raketa ko tapos ‘yon pala try-out na pala ‘yon, hindi ko alam na pumasa ako, tapos dun na nag-umpisa lahat.

Game Fouls

The death of his foster mother caused him to almost quit playing badminton. In his narratives, his mother was once against his badminton career. “Before siya mamatay, ayaw na ayaw niya akong mag badminton kasi nakasisira daw ng pag-aaral ko, nahahati daw ‘yong atensyon ko sa sports tapos sa pagaaral ko.” He started. “Then dahil sa gusto ko, tinago ko sa kanya then ‘nung lumaban na kami, hindi niya alam tapos may dala na lang akong medal” he defended his chosen path and later on he convinced his mother. “Tapos after ‘non, naghanda na lang siya” Dazo beamingly narrated. As you cannot please everyone, athletes also, aside from their supporters and fans do have their critics. Dazo said that before,

people tried to bring him down. “Ang daming nagsasabi sa akin ayan, ‘di naman magaling ‘yan, dina-downgrade nila ako kaya sabi ko, wala naman sigurong taong nagsimula sa pagiging magaling diba? So, paano mo sasabihing magaling agad? Ibig sabihin may pinagdaanan ka, nag training ka.” Dazo argued. He then continued and said, “Para mas makita nila na deserving ako sa sports na ‘to, nag youtube ako, nag-aral ako ng mga basics. Kalaro ko lang before ‘yong mga nag P-P.E. class ng Lyceum sa YMCA, then dito ako nagpapractice until nakita nila ‘yong progression.” After losing his mother, he tried to find people who will accept him and give him a home, a new life. He even vacated one year from school because money was scarce. But he never gives up. He used his resources and found a scholarship that will suffice his school expenses. He is now a volunteer coach of badminton players in his alma mater- Rajah Soliman Science and Technological High School and also for free coaching in Gregorio Perfecto High School. “Hindi kasi matatawaran ng pera ‘yong learning na maiiwan mo sa kanila, dapat ganoon ‘yong mindset ng isang future educator” He explained. He resigned from being a call center agent since he cannot manage well his time studying and training at the same time so to provide his daily necessities, he had himself employed as a private badminton coach of the employees of different companies such as Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), Department of Social Development and Welfare (DSDW), and NYK Logistics Company. His salaries from these jobs let him finish his remaining one year in the Pamantasan.

Harvests

Prior to the Indonesian Badminton Open Tournament, Dazo bagged various awards from the competitions he had participated. He had his first experience in the Association of Local Colleges and Universities (ALCU) games way back March 2015 under the training of his past badminton coach Jerwin Aguinaldo, part-time faculty member of the PE department. Again, under men’s doubles category, Dazo took home his first ever silver medal in his first year in PLM. The most recent is the Captain’s Cup, an outside once in a year party tournament which is a tribute to Captain Feary, a sea man and a badminton player, held at the Smart Shot, Pedro Gil last June 25. He played under the men’s and mix doubles and won 1st place in the former. He is currently preparing for his upcoming match in November that will be held in Hong Kong to be participated by different Asian countries. “Gusto ko mashare ‘yong experience

ko, kung hanggang saan ako nakarating not because of my talent, skills but because of my attitude, madali lang kasing ituro ang skills, pero ang attitude mahirap. Ayun talaga ‘yong tumatak sa’kin na sinabi ng coach ko, basta determinado ka, ‘yong initiative mong matuto, kukuhain ka ng tao, mas magugustuhan ka nila, as long as dedicated ka sa ginagawa mo” Dazo preached.

Who fuels him?

As Dazo described his early years as a player, he said that he never expected competing for the Philippines. As what he said, he really owes it to the Almighty, to whom his strength came from. Secondly, to his beloved mother, the one who pushed him to move beyond his limits and give all his best.

His winning formula

H-F-L. Dazo said he is in the place where he is because he upholds Humility, Love and Faith. He ranked humility as number one on the list. “Kasi hindi ka magugustuhan kung magaling ka nga, mayabang ka naman. Aayawan ka nila pero kung magaling ka tapos approachable and mabait ka pa, kung wala kang ina-underestimate na tao, mas magugustuhan ka nila.” He clarified. I have to win this game” He further said. Lastly, Love. He said that one must love his chosen sport. But aside from that, you should also love yourself, love people. “Hindi ka naman siguro makararating diyan kung hindi mo love ang sport mo diba?” Dazo emphasized. After he graduates, he is planning to acquire a coaching license. It’s his dream. To finish his studies and to impart knowledge as an educator does.”Kahit wala na ‘yong nanay ko, kahit mag-isa na lang ako, makakaraos ako, maaabot ko pa ‘yong pangarap ng nanay ko para sa’kin, makakapagtapos ako ng pag-aaral.” Dazo strongly declared.

TAKE IT ... with his burning passion made it true that championship is much sweeter the second time around. The team also participated in outside competitions like the PUMA Touch League where they were dubbed as the Plate Division Champion against the University of the Philippines Diliman. Jay was asked what keeps him going. He answered “‘yong pride namin as a PLMayer, ‘yong class namin kung paano maglaro, teammates ko, and ‘yong coach ko.” The secret ingredient the MVP keeps are discipline and respect. “disiplina sa sarili, coming on time, malaking bagay ‘yan. Disiplina during training and respect sa sarili mo.

He explained. Doubts for an MVP have been also a part of his conquest for greatness. “Doubt? Sa sarili ko. Sobrang pisikal kasi ‘nung game. ‘nung first game ko sa ALCU, 1st year college, during the game, nag shut down ako. He narrated. However, he explained that his coach still cares for his health despite what happened. “Hindi niya ako ino-overuse sa loob ng field.” He cleared. “Puso, ‘yan lang ‘yong sinisigaw namin and ng mga tao sa bench.” Jay said that word hypes their game.

Jay plans to train future players after he graduates from the university who molds him. “I should. I should to influence; I should to inspire kasi ‘yon kami. Ano ba kami? Teachers. So we need to influence people, we need to inspire people. Kasi ang teacher ganun ang trabaho. We need to touch lives. Hindi naman lahat na kukuha through lesson itself.” Jay also disclosed that he still feels the tense of their every game.

When asked about his few words to his coathletes he just cited the team victor’s, their major sponsor motivation quote: Dream your dream. Do your best. Never doubt and never rest until that dream comes. “Alam mo ‘yong larong kanto ka lang, simula doon sa singkuwenta na raketa biglang libo-libo na hanggang ngayon.” Dazo said as he dappled the difference between his foregoing and new life because he dared to choose the path that will make him fulfilled. From a total scratch into a significant life he is creating now, with no more perplexity,

/ L I T FO L I O

Dazo is still full of hopes that after calming number of waves that have came his way, he will still play with faith and perseverance. It wasn’t his craft before but through the formula he previously disclosed, the wrong mentality now changes, physique and skills come second and what is important is the heart to play. He’s still killing his anxieties and blocking disapproval of people, preparing for that perfect, astounding, and winning smash of his life.

PLM touch rugby claims championship crown in 8thALCU games

BY JERICA TELESFORO

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) men’s touch rugby team ended the reign of University of Makati (UMak) in a 3-0 comeback win and finished as the Overall champion under the touch rugby category during the 8th Association of Local Colleges and Universities (ALCU) games held in Olongapo last April. Collating five tries during the intense game versus the UMak Herons, winger player Cristian Jay Besa was hailed as the 2016 Most Valuable Player in Touch Rugby. He scored the first and last try in the final match that left UMak stunned while the second try was snatched by 2014 MVP Julius Casidlac. Together with a back-to-back championship in the women’s category, PLM men’s touch rugby hammered UMak, 3-0, in the final match to wrap up their 4-0 win-loss record in the series. This was their second taste of ALCU Championship after bagging the championship award in ALCU 2014. “Sa ALCU, pag sinabing PLM, touch rugby agad, “Besa said. “Puso, ‘yan lang ‘yong sinisigaw namin and ng mga tao sa bench, pag naririnig namin ‘yan lalo kaming namo-motivate,” he added. The 2016 ALCU games were participated by 21 local universities and colleges around the country. This Association was created in the later part of

2003 by the Commission on Accreditation, Inc., which is working closely with the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines, Inc. (AACCUP).

Vengeance served

The first half of the game between PLM and UMak ended in a 2-0 score. In a close fight, Besa made a vengeful try that cemented their win against the rival university.“Sobrang tight ng defense ng both teams, ‘di kami naka-score agad,” the star player narrated. PLM men’s touch rugby team eliminated Taguig City University (TCU), 06-01, and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa (PLMun), 08-01, during the first round of the series. With this premise, PLM had a twice-to-beat advantage during their final battle with UMak. The team was trained and guided by PE Department part-time faculty member and PLM alumnus Coach Dionel De Leon. Way back in 2012, it was his batch that brought home the first ever touch rugby championship and MVP award. Besa and Casidlac hand-in-hand led the team in the goal field while their cohort during the game was defense and support wing player Edward Rosales. “Mas nag focus kami sa offense namin. Mas nag focus kami sa kung paano namin imo-motivate ‘yong

TAKE IT FROM THE MVP BY JERICA TELESFORO

An MVP once told me, “We need to touch lives.” Vengeance at some time has driven us to do well. To ‘come back’ is to go beyond the old version and to transform into a stronger one. A ballroom turned into a hip-hop dancer and a tough player inside the hard court withdrew his opponents out of the scene like a villain in revenge

after being deprived of his desired superpower. Senior Physical Education student, Cristian Jay V. Besa shared his chronicle prior to the plaque of hard work and the medal of perseverance he had received being the Most Valuable Player of the recent 8th Association of Local Colleges and Universities (ALCU) games men’s Touch Rugby. Common questions such as what does it take to be an MVP, what attitude an MVP possesses, and what winning secrets an MVP keeps can be asked to him. Fresh from their recent championship, the MVP himself will provide the answers to the aforementioned queries. So, let’s take it from the MVP. Behind success is a roller coaster ride full of emotions. The MVP was casted by experience, love for sports and hard work. He started as a player of track and field in grade school enrolled at Diosdado Macapagal Elementary School, and won 1st place in the district meet. Entering high school in Ramon Magsaysay, Jay crossed another field and tried dancing, ballroom particularly. Here he became the two-time champion in Palarong

isa’t isa kapag nasa loob kami ng field,” Besa said. “Bago kami maglaro iniisip namin lahat ng nangyari last year. ‘Yon yung naging motivation namin and wala kaming gustong gawin kundi ang bumawi ng bumawi,” he maintained. Besa recalled that it should have been a three-peat win for the university if only they were allowed to play their championship match last year. This was due to the decision of the ALCU authoritative board on the protest filed by TCU against PLM for coming 15 minutes late in the game. However, Besa pointed out that they arrived just in time that they were advised. Despite ending up with a 10-0 mark against Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa (PLMun) and having no loss, the protest against PLM reduced the anticipated championship match to a bronze award. TCU was the one who faced UMak in the final battle wherein the latter rose victorious. Looking forward, Besa vowed for a third championship trophy in the 9th ALCU games which will be held at Batangas in March 2017. “’Yong pinanghahawakan namin sa coach namin is ‘yong fact na wala pang nakakatalo sa amin sa championship,” he assured.

Maynila and represented the city in the NCR level. He bagged a silver medal in his first competition and later earned the 4th spot in the following In his second year in college, while having his training as a touch rugby player, he was also fulltime in his hip-hop dance group inside the university which is the PLM Iskolars Dance Incorporated and his outside group which is the Autonomicass Crew. Like an acrobat, he simultaneously balanced his time to meet each group’s training hours. “Bayani ako noong mga panahong ‘yan” he humored. Iskolars Dance Incorporated was a finalist in the Sketchers Competition held atthe Mall of Asia Arena, an intercollegiate modern dance battle. Also a finalist in EGO, an all boys, hip-hop dance competition held at the Araneta Coliseum. While in the University Belt Dance Duo, Jay together with Mike Steven Emocling, College of Business and Management (CBM) student won 3rd place out of the 15 schools who joined the competition. His outside group, Autonomicass Crew had soared high too. Jay was in his second year in PLM, when he joined the Battle Grounds Philippines where the spotlight shone brightly at his face. Their team was one of those who were chosen to represent the country in Australia for the final battle. Unfortunately, the exact date of the competition was within the finals week of the university, having his study as his top

priority, Jay wasn’t able to Australia with his team. For the record, Autonomicass Crew landed 4th place out of the 11 countries who participated. Torn between where his spot really is, whether on dance floor or inside the court, Jay uttered “Ginive-up ko ‘yong dancing ko, ang pinili ko ay touch rugby” “Sa rugby hindi ko na-feel na umayaw…” On the stage, with or without the spotlight he dances the beat of his life. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow motion. He follows the perfect routine in order to express smoothly what he feels. But above all, he’s robust, fast and strong. Inside the field you’ll hear him roar. He took his team up, never going down, never quitting and never saying die. Having the MVP title, it is not fair to hide that Jay had some scars too. He neglected steps; he freed the ball and missed a point. Being an MVP is not being excellent at all for humans have never been impeccable. He said no to touch rugby at first. He said he is ill and he might not qualify since touch rugby is known for more strong bodily contacts. He might get hurt. Until such time that this flame ignited, it burned within his soul and drove him to go on. Apparently, he was chosen. In his first time competing for the university in the ALCU games, with all his beginner teammates, they just surprisingly landed on the top seed. The championship trophy was then back at home. It was a total package

for Jay. It’s his first play in touch rugby, first ALCU game and first championship. What a dream come true for the one who once rejected the sport. After going up, the Ferris wheel went down. In his second ALCU, back in March 2015, their team was denied for the championship title so they just played for the bronze level. They went under protest because of some issues. The board of the games deemed it final that although they had no loss, they will not play for the championship round. It was during their game against the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa (PLMun) when the board announced that they will not move forward to the championship round even if they win that game. Despite of that, they still played with their tears cascading down their cheeks like a child who lost his lollipop. Not something to brag, they finished the game 10-0 on the score board. This was the reason of the revenge, the comeback 2016. “…kailangan naming bumawi talaga, ilang araw kaming umiyak, ‘yong coach namin umiiyak…”There, he reigned as the ALCU 2016 touch rugby MVP. Things went as planned. They returned the title back to PLM and proved to all that they really came for that, to get what was for them. Jay
