ANG PAMANTASAN/ MARCH 2016

As scholars, we don’t only owe our community the service we’ve been prepared for, but we’re expected to contribute to the betterment of each aspect of the society ... EDITORIAL The goal of any given government is to alleviate the problems of the society. Effective governance requires leaders who have equal measures of discipline, dignity, patriotism, honesty, and other values that would direct the society as a whole in unquestionable glory. We are entering another landmark in the history of our dearest University. All of us will cast our votes once again to choose student leaders. Personas of the student body: those who will stand to protect our rights and interests. Before this, we must be aware of the problem that the elected Supreme Student Council will face in the next school year. At present, the climate inside the campus is distinctly different from the usual tier. Students come off as unable to deviate from the high school culture, where the motivation is solely on acquiring good grades, in place of a significant and purposeful learning environment. Though the thesis is moot, the notion that PLM students still has to brush up on immersing themselves into activities outside the classroom has its merit. The SSC is the studentgoverning body. On their shoulders lies the responsibility to protect the rights and interests of the students, improve their welfare to the fullest extent, and coordinate with other organizations to provide the best service for the student body. Those who will be elected in each position within the council are expected to be active in

meeting these responsibilities which can be done by initiating projects that are relevant, worthwhile, and reasonable such as outreach programs, student leader seminars, trainings and skill development events. Aside from this, as the protector of the rights and interests of the students, the upcoming SSC is expected to address the concern that matters most among the student which includes the renovation project of various school facilities. These two are just part of the many other problems that the SSC would have to deal with. But if ever they would be able to succeed in addressing such issues and concerns, then the PLM scholars may proceed in dealing with bigger issues outside the campus. As scholars, we don’t only owe our community the service we’ve been prepared for, but we’re expected to contribute to the betterment of each aspect of the society by being socially and politically active - we can start by voting. Suffrage gives us the power to shape the future of each and every Filipino, including our own. If we will only participate in every election, then it’s a sign that we’re participating actively in catapulting our nation to its greatness. The only question, however, is that are we ready? Are we prepared to make wise decisions and calculated choices? Are we educated enough to know who among our political aspirants carries the virtues of a true leader?

STUDENT INBOX

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FROM THE NEXT SSC OFFICERS?

As a first year student, I expect more activities and events that would involve the whole PLM community which at the same time improve their social and political awareness.

Kris, BS SocWork

Ang Pamantasan, the Official Student Publication of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, is looking for a new batch of campus journalist!

Inaasahan kong makabawi yung council ngayon dahil walang masyadong nangyaring events this year. Sana this time may magawa sila kahit na against ‘yung admin sa projects nila.

I expect each officer of the next Supreme Student Council for the Academic Year 2016-2017 to be a representative of the whole student body and not the political parties in which they came from, for in the first place, they aimed to be in the position not just to bring glory to the slate that they belong to but also to serve as competent examples for the whole student population. I am hoping that the next SSC can be our voice that can reach more decibels than the past. Denielle Megan Zarzadiaz, BS Psych

It will be much too ideal to say that all candidates from different parties must go hand-in-hand in fighting for the welfare of the students.

Campus elections shouldn’t cause a wide gap between students who pronounce that they aim for the common good. If anything, campus elections must

trigger the sleeping desire of every student who thirsts for change. It seems that student welfare is just an idea used by political candidates to make way for the personal agenda they, or their parties, have had since then—to dominate the elections.

With all of these, it could be really hard to identify people who speak of service from their hearts and genuinely aim for the betterment of the student body more than anything else. We have been deceived a thousand

times, that maybe, we were already used to deception. A lot of leaders have failed us over and over again, that maybe, we become hopeless for change. We have been led by a number of leaders we call stupid, that maybe, we have become stupid ourselves. It would probably be senseless to remind everybody to be wise in choosing the candidates they will vote for. “Vote wisely” is a line that has lost its meaning as it has always been used year after year by people who promise lies and speak of invisible change. So don’t be wise, PLMayers. Instead, don’t be stupid.
