SSC PRO

What are the changes/plans we should look forward to in your term?

PRO: Nabanggit ko naman sa pagru-room to room campaign namin yung mga projects and ways kung paano namin idi-disseminate so personally bilang SSC PRO ngayong taon, we [are] advocating the active information dissemination which includes the five ah social media , cellular phones, Ang Supremo, we’re still working on the Supremo which is a newsletter of the SSC and PLM TV which is previously na ginagamit na noon ng PLM so we want to revive it. During this summer, we practiced and we tried various informarion dissemination like for example, posting [online] which is relevant sa PLM yung mga bago like for example, yung very hot issue ngayon is yung pagpasok ng k12, we are trying to communicate with the administration and relaying it to the public using our social media account. This year as a SSC PRO, I want to establish the GoPRO, which is magkakaroon ng samahan ang mga PRO hindi lamang sa college pati sa mga organizations ng bawat college.

TREASURER: On my second term, together with my team, we’ll revitalize the concept of collective leadership. We will keep the fire of the PLM torch burning through a more meaningful and significant projects. It is an advantage for the team that Boogie and I have already seated for a post in SSC, collectively with 4 more equally competent student leaders. This year, we’ll focus on the strict implementation of the projects. With conformity to the plans, the PLMayers shall look forward for a year of celebration and revitalization. This is gonna be a remarkable celebration of the 51st founding anniversary of PLM.

AUDITOR: Para sakin this term, ang plano ko

SECRETARY: Before pa ako pumasok. Kasi

Ang napansin ko is nagbabago yung way ng pakikipag-usap natin sa Admin because it is also changing. I think what we have to change is the way we communicate, I mean we have to improve it and we have to be adapting to the changes that’s happening. To change it, what we need to do is to improve our communication with the Admin.

VICE PRESIDENT: Of course, yung plano namin as a council ngayon is nakadepende pa rin siya sa platforms namin nung tumatakbo kami and aside from that, mag-aapply dun yung changes na hindi naman kami straight at kahit straight naman kami willing kami magbago ng platforms and plans based sa resources available or dun sa mga magiging changes sa university generally. PRESIDENT: Unang-unang plano ko as president is to establish good governance as I repeat kasi dun sa history ng previous SSC walang tayong mga standards at walang tayong certain measures of check and balance for transparency and

accountability of the SSC before tayo magkaroon ng changes sa mga traditional activities that we do, we should have change internally so we are planning to add up commissions, personally I am planning kasi hindi pa namin na naoopen up kasi mga urgent matters yung dini-discuss namin so we are planning to set up commission on audit, additional commissions, and student commission on elections. Internal muna-internal changes. Maaari naming i-review yung constitution namin; we can have a constitutional review kung timely pa ba yung constitution and of course, is it relevant to the need of the students? mas nilo-look forward yung integration ng students sa society sa needs ng society and sa relevant matter within the society. ‘Yun ‘yung gusto naming maging focus that we will not be just scholars of the university but we are scholars of the Philippines that will contribute to the nation so lahat ng mga relevant issues na alam ng mga estudyante with an enlightened mind of the reality, social reality that they can have active participation doon sa mga relevant matters na kailangan ng participation because the youth is a significant aspect of our country, most specially as scholars. Editorial ERRATUM The previous banner story of Ang Pamantasan’s special issue entitled “PLM to accept transferees” stated: “The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) will now accept transferees from other universities, the first time in the five-decade long history of Manila’s public tertiary school…”

Reporting accurate and unbiased news to the people is the major service of journalism. Journalists are under oath to deliver truthful and objective news stories. They must not in any way shape or form invest their loyalty to any single benefactor, but instead profess it to the public. Journalists must protect their dignity and credibility, as well as their compliance to the ethics of professional journalism. But most especially, journalists must never abuse their power by maligning others, placing someone as a target of prejudice, and aggravate issues for the misfortune of many. In other words, journalists are assumed by the public to deliver accurate and impartial information: the “truth” in every sense of the word. Journalists spend days handling truths, examining it, splicing it in many parts to see the core, placing it under intense scrutiny, and then bringing it all back in its original shape, ready for public digestion. In no part of that process should the truth be chipped and sculpted into a different and more insidious presentation. But despite every journalist’s effort to deliver reliable information, mistakes and lapses in judgment should be rare, but still inevitable. After all, humans are not exempt from committing unintentional errors that at one point or another may be rectified. The power of these “scribes” may build or break somebody else’s reputation. People trust journalists to such a degree of confidence that when mistakes are incurred, the collateral damage is almost irreparable. It is a must to clarify and validate statements when journalists commit these mistakes. The actions taken by the one who committed an error against another to straighten the mistake and use the medium to present the truth and hope that the damages repair themselves in the long run is what matters. Journalists report the truth. Journalists make mistakes. Journalists analyze the mistakes and study further. Journalists report the expanded, more intricate appendage of the truth again, and admit the lapse in judgment. The society gives importance to apologies. That is why it is essential for someone to express regret and remorse for committing a mistake. It may not undo the damage that has been done, but apologies direct the relationship of the subject, the writer, and the public on new, clearer, and more transparent forms of communication, each trading equal measure of trust and objective dissonance. Being a journalist means facing huge responsibilities. Placing oneself in the position of accountability for any inconvenience one’s writing may cause to other people. In line with this, Ang Pamantasan expresses its sincerest apologies to Dr. Cecilia Sabio, Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) for the lapses in accuracy and misconstrued statements for the past issues that the publication has released. It is not and will never be Ang Pamantasan’s intention to put your good image and your office in jeopardy. These oversights were published after the VPAA has made its efforts to enlighten the publication of its duties and obligations, and has given Ang Pamantasan a chance to redeem itself. The publication has disclosed these corrections in the previous issue, such as in the January issue the articles regarding PLM Plans To Offer Senior High School, Awaits Approval and PLM Merges Colleges in Preparation for Asean Integration, along with this a new erratum is included in this issue. Ang Pamantasan lends itself in a process of thoroughness and objectivity. This incident helps reaffirm that the publication needs to go at greater lengths to commit to attention to detail, and accurate reporting. And for that, we are assuring you and all the readers of the publication that the Editorial Board will do its very best to never let such incident happen again.

Ang Pamantasan would like to clarify that there is already an existing document proving that the transfer of students in PLM is permissible since 2005 in The University Code of 2005,Chapter XXII, articles 232-235. Article 232 states that transfer of students from other educational institutions shall be subject to availability of places, provided that they finish at least two years (2) in this University, and provided further that their admission is favorably recommended by the concerned College Dean after passing the required qualifying examination. The University Code of 2005 also includes the grounds for disqualification of student transferees to PLM: (1) Those who have been expelled from other schools or universities, (2) Those who have been dismissed by reason of disciplinary action; and (3) Those who failed to comply with other admission requirements. Dr. Gilmore Solidum, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs on academic support unit, further explained the transferring of students to PLMis allowed by the university’s charter, during the first day of the public consultation for student manual revision at the Justo Albert auditorium last January. In addition to the quotation on the last issue, Solidum added ‘But yes, as a matter of policy, we are accepting transferees.’ Long before, PLM allows student transferees to experience the premier scholars’ university of the capital city whose academic excellence the Commission on Higher Education recognizes. The Editorial Board apologizes for this oversight and deeply regrets any incident this information may have caused.

What will be your top priority as an officer of the Supreme Student Council?

PRO: We want to work hand in hand this time na hindi nalang puro SSC yung nagfu-function, we want to involve other students because this year we are not only fighting for the rights of the students but also fighting for the rights of the youth like what Boogie said last year, gusto ko munang ishare na siyempre nahirapan tayo last year na to approve and convince the administration for certain events that we [can] really help not only the student but also will help the improvement of the whole university. Masyado tayong nakulong sa possibilities but this time I will try to communicate to them that we will try to meet the vision na this is what we want to run for this position and these are the changes that we want. TREASURER: As the elected Supreme Student Council Treasurer, my top priority is to ensure that I’m doing my function accordingly. I will prioritize the implementation of the Student Council Accounting System, to set a standardized template of financial reports for all student councils and student organizations. One more important thing is to ensure reasonable and proper use of funds. SECRETARY: As Secretary of SSC, I believe my top priority is to promote effective communication and also unity, siguro. Dalawang klase kasi ng unity, unity of the students with the student council and also the unity of admin with the student council. Ahm, kasi maganda talaga yung makikita niyo yung point nung both ends. Tapos maiintindihan ng admin yung point ng students tapos, kami as SSC dapat malaki yung interaction namin with the CSC kasi sila yung way para makapagcommunicate kami sa buong university. Siguro yung unity with the admin and the student council and student council with the CSC. VICE PRESIDENT: As an officer ng SSC ang top priority ko ay ‘yung least priority ng iba. Gusto kong pagtuunan ng pansin ung mga problemang hindi napapansin ng lahat ng students and yung iba na rin na officers or student leaders regardless kung meron position or wala.

PRESIDENT: Ang top priority namin is again ipagpatuloy yung mga nasimulan at kung meron mang hindi magandang nangyari is to eradicate that of course kung personally lang din, ang top priority ko muna is to start within ourselves. Siguro in my perspective is this council to be united first, alisin muna yung mga political barriers for us to be objective as always and for the betterment of the students. Pangalawa nga ipa-priority namin is good governance, accountability, transparency to the students and making programs that are reflective of the needs of the students and of the society and I think ‘yun ‘yung mga ipa-priority namin and ‘yung GPOA na naipangako namin sa mga students we will strictly evaluate that if it is in conformity with the needs of the students of PLM, their environment and their situations. What is your leadership principle?

And during the past year sa leadership ng UAPSA meron akong mga natutunan na principles na doon ko lang feeling ko natutunan and I’m happy and very proud to brag it right now: according to our last UAPSA PLM President Maricar Guycoa, “if you want to serve and to lead, you have to be willing to die a million times”. So this time I’m opening myself to die a million times and I’m willing to step up for the student. TREASURER: I lived with and always will, a leadership with dignity. I am the kind person who will never back out for anything. I will fight and find a way for what is right. But, we’re only humans, nobody’s perfect; we might done wrong and consequently our principles got bent. With this kind of challenge in life, I remain firm in facing anything as consequences of what I did. Life is a matter of choice, and not all choices are right. It is the time we learn from it, that’s what matters most. SECRETARY: My leadership principle is I think upholding compassion for the students kasi ako nasanay din ako na normal student so gusto ko na yung, personally gusto ko na nakikita nung leader ko kung saan ako nanggagaling, kung ano yung mga kailangan ko kung ano yung beside dun sa academic na kailangan ko as a person, as a student, as a citizen

OPINION

Mistakes are Proof of Trying We’ve all done mistakes, big and little ones. Mistakes are proof that we are trying and that we can all learn a valuable life lesson from some of those that we commit. I remember as a kid whenever I made a mistake, I would simply brush it off and pretend it never happened, but those mistakes are caused by my naïveté and innocence which are forgivable, especially when I was a kid, I can get away with almost everything. If my fellow scholars think that we can write everything we want and easily get off the hook by claiming we have the freedom of the press, they are wrong. Most people simply want freedom, but are afraid of the responsibilities that it entails with it. Now being a writer in the school newspaper has taught me that we have to be responsible on

of this country.

VICE PRESIDENT: My leadership principle is to always put the students first. Now, hindi naman siya nangyayari usually in the past pero yung negative connotation lang is yung ginagamit yung position for personal gains kasi public service is not about the personal stability of a person o yung personal stability ng officer. For example, it’s not about pagkuha ng credits, yung recognition, winning is about public service. PRESIDENT: Of course my leadership principle is the principles of my organization. There are seven binding principles that cannot stand without the others [sic]. Kung isasama pa natin, it is dedicated to the students in respect with due process, democratic processes of determining things and relevant to the needs of the society, and socially responsible to human interaction. What are the problems that PLM faces today? What are your corresponding solutions to these?

We want it to happen this time na open book ang administration. If you want to consult them and clarify things, they’re very open for that. This time we will try to solve certain issues not by hindi yung magiging contradiction sa vision and mission ng administration for this year [sic], we will try to meet halfway na to tackle certain things like, for example, ang approval of events, we want to focus on that because affected tayong lahat. TREASURER: I’ll just focus on a general prob-

everything we do, that we are accountable for the articles we publish, and that given the privilege to be the voice of the students has to have fairness to everyone involved. I simply cannot reiterate the importance of words; it can either make or break someone’s reputation. And even with trying to be responsible and fair, sometimes, we really cannot avoid mistakes. Mistakes are proof that you are trying, and trying means that you are able to put yourself out there and courageously accept it and humble yourself down. Alexander Pope says that “To err is human, to forgive divine.” It is easy to commit a mistake, but it is hard to forgive. Humans inevitably make mistakes, and forgiving is not easy, especially when you have been wronged unfairly. To forgive is divine, because we go beyond our understand-

lem concerning the welfare of the studentry. And that is a lack of communication between the admin and the student body. As the representatives of the studentry, the SSC will promote an intensive and active communication to the administration; to serve as a bridge of ideologies and concerns, evident on specific projects that shall be implemented this year. Other problems not mentioned are ensured to be advocated and regarded in the projects and plans of the council.

SECRETARY: Problem is, hindi siguro masyadong na-aadress yung communication because naniniwala ako na yung sa unity, masyadong kailangan natin ng communication kasi diba sabi nga nila negligence is the rust of the soul. We really have to communicate with each other para yung problema maliit pa lang siya nasosolusyunan na. Ang plano namin as a council and individually is to gian back the connection na nawala between the students and the administration. It’s like going back to basics, kasi noong pumasok ako sa PLM sobrang masigla, pro-student siya, nararamdaman ko na it’s the university that I want to study for my next four years pero ibang-iba na siya ngayon [sic]. So hindi lang ibalik, to give the students more than that. PRESIDENT: Actually, yung mga problems natin ngayon is yung mga proceeding. Meron tayong mga policies na nag-eexist na pinaniniwalaan namin na mas maaari pang pagbutihin, maaring baguhin for the benefit of the students. One of those is the one month rule, which still exists, and the elevator policy which we’re still debating [on] although nagkaroon na ng adjustments kasi nag-send out tayo ng official communication sa kanila, so tignan natin ngayon kung kaya pang baguhin. And pressing matters, I think, relevant yung elections kasi it’s an issue that all of the scholars should be aware. Magkaroon tayo ng participation kasi a change in the governance in PLM would have a change in our situation, ganoon siya kalaking change kasi it could affect scholastic standings, student rights, and tuition fees. Actually it could affect everything. Everything that’s in PLM maari siyang magbago kasi nga it could affect based on the governance. We’re unsure yet kung anong mangyayari, so I think yun ung isang pressing matter.

“Accepting one’s mistake is not the end of making things right, rather it is just the start.”

ing and act with greater wisdom and compassion for doing so. It’s so easy to see the flaws of things and or people through our own narrow perspective and it is a lot harder to keep in mind of the perspective of others. Without careful analysis of the situation wrong conclusions maybe reached and the wrong lesson maybe learned. Accepting one’s mistake is not the end of making things right, rather it is just the start. There has to be sincerity and remedies have to be made in order to mitigate the act. Let us stop making excuses for our mistakes, acknowledge that we made one and express openly what lesson we have learned from it. From all this we have to learn that we can’t change our mistakes, but we can choose how to respond to them, work to understand why it happened and use these as growth and start to find more room for improvement. Mistakes are unavoidable but it’s how you make it right that matters.

OPINION

On Responsible Journalism

JERICA VERON S. TELESFORO

What does it take to be a responsible journalist? The abovementioned question is cliché for us perhaps. I am also familiar with it for I heard it several times since my 4th grade but, this time is different. Responsible journalism might not be new, but because of the experience I’ve been through, I am now more than grateful for realizing the profound meaning and essence of it. Aspiring writers often praise journalists for the field they are into. They can see journalism as a wild forest wherein they can be themselves freely, I mean without any strongholds. They can write and or express their feelings and opinions. But in the inner core, in a deeper sense, journalism is not as easy as writing. It is not as easy as expressing your thoughts and opinions. This was the time RESPONSIBLE journalism was born. Accurate Information In order to write a substantial article the first thing I have to do is to gather information. Take note, it is not just an information, it must be factual. I should have back-up documents for every details and these details should come from reliable sources for me to be a reputable journalist. Fairness There will be two sides of the story. If I am aiming to be a responsible journalist, I should get the sides of both parties involved in the issue. Impartial writing makes every journalist reliable and trustworthy. Rigid research Aside from the information I’ve gathered, I must not yet be contented. I should

go out of the box and make myself well informed about my chosen issue. I will do rigid researches about the persons involved, about the circumstances that are happening and about any external factors of the story. It would help me a lot to result in an unbiased story. Accountability Errors are inevitable. We are all humans after all. And yes, journalists do commit mistakes. But, for the errors that have been committed, responsible journalists hold themselves accountable. It must be corrected. Remedies should be done. I should be accountable for the errors I have committed and my expressions of regret must be sincere. These are the things I have learned. It’s been a long and tough day but it’s all worth it. Humility played an important role in the picture. Whatever position I might hold in the future, it is still a must to stay humble most especially when I was the one who made the mistake in the first place. I learned one of the important things a successful person keeps, which is to value humility as precious the most precious gem. The gaffes I have made brought unexpected experience and learning which I now truly treasure. I have committed mistakes and you have given me a chance to correct them and improve myself. The experience is unforgettable, and it is truly instilled in my mind that the character of a responsible journalist is not far from what a responsible person’s character should be–someone who goes beyond the call of duty, does the right thing even when no one is watching, sees things through and owns up their mistakes. Because of that, I would like to thank the people who helped me see the essence of responsible journalism and the value of humility.
